This Affordable Set of Facial Oils Is My Secret to Glowing, Healthy Skin

Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Nicole Yi

Reviving my dry Winter skin is no easy feat, so how have I managed to score a Summer-like glow off season? Hint: it's not highlighter - it's Honey Belle's Gold Collection ($35). The organic, natural skincare line's set features three of its star products: Luxe (cleansing oil), Flora (rosewater toner), and Elixir (facial oil). Although each one is fantastic as a standalone product, they work best in combination with each other to achieve healthy, luminous skin.

After just a week of using the collection, I immediately noticed a smoother, softer, and moisturized face that I'm more confident in showing off sans makeup (like in the photo above). Now two months after putting them into practice, I'm close to retiring my former favorite products in place of these. According to some of the raving reviews online, others have noticed less visible facial scarring, fewer breakouts, and better control of their oily skin in addition to the aforementioned benefits. Here's a breakdown of each bottle!

Step 1: Luxe

This cleansing oil is gentle enough for all skin types but tough on waterproof makeup. Rather than using a harsh makeup remover wipe, apply a few drops of Luxe (starting at $14) into your palm and work through your face in circular motions using your fingertips. You'll see how easily dirt, impurities, and makeup come off. Once you're done, no need to use soap! Simply rinse off with warm water before moving onto the next step.

Ingredients: organic apricot kernel seed oil, rosemary essential oil, bergamot essential oil, and vitamin E.
Benefits: reduces fine lines, age spots, and scars and improves skin tone.

Step 2: Flora

This rosewater toner contains high levels of vitamin C, which aids in erasing fine lines and boosts collagen levels. Flora (starting at $12) soothes acne while providing moisture and ridding bacteria. Apply liberally to your face, and use your fingertips to evenly distribute the product to your skin. It'll seal in the Luxe you used right before and immediately produce a gorgeous glow. But wait, it gets even better.

Ingredients: organic rosewater, witch hazel extract, and rosewood essential oil.
Benefits: cleanses, tightens, and tones the skin; diminishes wrinkles and pores; rejuvenates the skin; reduces acne and scarring; and keeps skin looking healthy.

Step 3: Elixir

The final step of the collection is packed with omega-3s and -6s, which results in improved skin elasticity and, therefore, younger- and healthier-looking skin. Top it all off by rubbing a dime-size amount of Elixir (starting at $15) between your palms and pat onto your face and neck. Enjoy your beaming complexion!

Ingredients: organic cold pressed hemp seed oil, grapefruit essential oil, basil essential oil, rosemary essential oil, and vitamin E.
Benefits: makes skin firmer and more hydrated, enhances dull skin, and improves skin tone.

In addition to smelling amazing and working great for all skin types (including oily skin!), the Gold Collection is also affordable. Each mini bottle (0.5 oz.) is sold separately for $12 to $14 or $35 for all three. Despite its small size, Honey Belle's set has lasted me for the past couple months, and I'm only barely halfway through the bottles.

The site recommends using twice per day, once in the morning and evening, but I've only been using mine at night while I try to get through my other products without putting them to waste. On the weekends, however, I love limiting my skincare routine to this awesome trio and leaving the house with only Glossier's Boy Brow and some mascara on. I've honestly never received so many compliments on my skin before! If you're looking for a low-maintenance skincare regimen, the Gold Collection was made for you.

9 Cannabis Skincare Products Guaranteed to Make Your Skin Dope

If you haven't heard about CBD in skin care, get ready to. Topicals using cannabis are being used for everything from muscle pain to acne, and there are results to back their efficacy. Clinical research by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology and the National Center for Biotechnology Information show evidence that cannabinoids have antiaging and antioxidant properties. These studies also confirm that cannabinoids are responsible for lipid production and, therefore, for regulating conditions such as dry skin or acne.

So if you're looking to incorporate CBD into your skin routine, where should you start?

First of all: not all products calling themselves "CBD skin care" are the same. Some products only use hemp oil, which is legal in all 50 states. Others use pure CBD oil, which has even more medicinal properties, but no psychoactive effects (read: it won't get you high). Others contain THC and/or are transdermal, which means they cross the skin barrier to enter your system and will make you feel high. I've tried to clarify which is which for each product, but all the items I've included here are on the more medicinal end, and you'll need to live in a state where it's legal to purchase them.

These are my picks for some natural vegan cannabis skincare products to get you started.

I've Tried So Many Purple Shampoos, I Lost Count - This One Is Hands Down My Favorite

I'm a natural blonde who sometimes dyes her hair even blonder - this is why I love purple shampoo. I've been using these toning cleansers for years, and I've finally found my favorite. The Sachajuan Silver Shampoo ($31) is worth every penny. Like most people who color their tresses lighter, I get left with a brassy, orange shade I want to combat. Even when I haven't dyed my hair in a long time and it's on the darker side, I notice that using this shampoo lightens some of my locks.

After being introduced to the Swedish brand and loving its thickening shampoo, I decided to give its toning one a try. In case you're not familiar with the line, it's driven to create simple and clean beauty products that give your hair exactly what you need without extraharmful ingredients. It is free of parabens and phthalates, so you can feel good about treating yourself with this formula.

Because I have hair on the thinner side, I'm also looking to add extra bounce into my strands. This double-duty shampoo does just that. Not only are my locks softer and more voluminous, but they look so much lighter as well. The purple color (sometimes it can be blue or gray) helps drown out warm shades and leaves you with a cool, icy finish. It also adds pigments to help neutralize the color. This pick goes the extra mile and also works as a UV filter aid. And it helps to prevent dye from fading in the sun.

Treat your locks to this special shampoo, and try the Sachajuan Silver Conditioner ($33) too!

6 Foolproof Tips For Getting a Tattoo You Won't Regret Later

I waited until I was 26 to get my first tattoo, and I am so, so glad that I did. I'm not exactly a Kat Von D type. I'm not covered in tats from head to toe, but I have three custom tattoos that I absolutely love. While some people commit to tattoos easily, for most of us, the process is more difficult. We worry about whether our idea is something we'll still be connected to in 30 years, whether the artist will be able to pull off a design we'll love, and how the tattoo will wear over time.

That said, if you've always wanted to get a tattoo but want to make sure it's just right, I know how you feel. Here's my advice for getting a high-quality tattoo you'll love that will stand out from the crowd and complement your personal style.

1. Find the Right Artist

Finding a good tattoo artist is a lot harder than you'd think. In most major cities, leading tattoo artists often don't take new clients, or they have lengthy waiting lists. This is to be expected. One artist I absolutely loved and followed on Instagram for many years didn't even take client requests - she just put designs she wanted to do on her Instagram page, and people applied for them!

So to find the right artist, do your research. Don't rule out artists in smaller cities nearby. Scour the internet for tattoo studios in your region and look at every. single. page. Check out the artist's reviews and Instagram page and the studio's Facebook page. You want someone who is legit.

2. Decide What You Want

Ultimately, your tattoo is yours, so no one else's opinion really matters. But think long and hard about what you really want to put on your body. Some questions to ask yourself include: Does this match my personal aesthetic (not just today's style)? Is the subject of this tattoo something that means a lot to me? I recommend that people view tattoos as symbols of important times and places in their life. So, let's say you get a tattoo in honor of your home city . . . even if you don't live there in 30 years, your tattoo will be a reminder of an exciting time/place in your life.

3. Set Aside an Appropriate Budget

The cost of tattoos vary widely, but most respected artists run from about $150 per hour to $400. This can be lower or higher, depending on the artist's desirability and your metropolitan area. Tattoos also vary widely in the amount of time they take. Talk with your artist ahead of time about how much he or she thinks your design will cost.

4. Prepare Your References

Another part of your discussion with your artist will include laying out your ideas for your design. References (photos you show your artist, which showcase your style) are important, but remember: your artist is ultimately the one designing the tattoo. They have to create original work, so don't expect them to copy another artist's design.

5. Voice Your Concerns

Some tattoo artists can be a little bit bothered by lots of questions. Some don't even want to let you in on the design process until the day of your tattoo. They may be great artists, but I personally decline to work with these kinds of people. There are plenty of artists out there who are more than happy to collaborate with you on your design. It's harder to find those people, but seek them out - you want to be able to express your desires and concerns and not feel like you're bothering your artist by doing so.

6. Expect It to Turn Out a Little Differently Than You Imagined

Especially if this is your first tattoo, be prepared that there's a good chance it won't look 100 percent the way you imagined it. Ink on the skin tends to do that. But the good news is, if you're really committed to the idea of having art on your skin, you're probably going to love it anyway. Once something is etched into your body, it becomes a part of you.

A Starter Kit For Quitting Steroid Cream

The following post originally appeared on Medium.

It's been one year since I stopped using steroid cream and started TSW (topical steroid withdrawal). It's also been about a year since I posted this - What a month of superitchy horrible skin taught me.

I just wanted to share some tips I wish I had when I first started.

Me in the first weeks of TSW aka hell
Slowly healing four months in
After one year steroid-free (right now!)

1. You literally are what you eat

When you discover how your gut and skin are connected, it can really empower you to take the road to recovery. The quick explanation is that if you're not digesting food properly, your body can't get rid of waste through your poo. The waste has to come out somewhere though, so it chooses the nearest exit - your skin. Also for me, I discovered I was actually allergic to dairy and eggs. What I used to think were random flare-ups were actually reactions to what I was eating! I was just covering it up with the steroid cream and not listening to the warning signs that my body was giving me.

I suggest keeping a food journal and becoming a kind of detective of yourself.

At first, I would just roughly write what I ate and drank and then how my skin felt that day
And then I started to make a list of possible trigger foods and whether I ate them or not that day. This turned out to be easier than writing EVERYTHING I ate.

This really helped me narrow down what exactly was the best diet for me and what triggered me specifically.

I was already trying to cut down on meat and fish, and when I finally quit steroid cream (this journal was from before) I went fully plant-based. I cut out meat, fish, dairy, and eggs. I also cut out soda, caffeine, processed sugar, fried foods, and wheat (until I found out I could take it in moderate amounts).

The food diary worked, but it wasn't always obvious if something had milk in it or not. Dairy is very tricky and tries to work its way into everything. Read the label carefully, and be wary of casein, whey, and lactose. They all mean something contains dairy. Of course, it's safer to avoid labels altogether and eat whole foods - but this isn't always possible.

I also recommend Cronometer. Its an amazing (and free) website that helps you make sure you're getting enough nutrients if you do decide to transition to plant-based. I would still recommend it either way. You don't even have to use it everyday; it can be great just for learning more about nutrition.

An example of food i was eating :)

Last thing surrounding food: I would recommend going to get a blood test and seeing if you're deficient in anything. For me, it was vitamin D, so I started taking a supplement. You'll also want to start taking B12 if you transition to plant-based.

Oh also, here's a quick video to help you poo better. Yup, it'll change your life.

2. Take care of your heart

Remember that your emotional health is just as important as your physical health - it's all one. Know that you'll only come out of this stronger.

Losing my eyebrows, and gaining them back slowly :D Never been more grateful for having eyebrows

I remember how frustrated I was. I'd spoken to three different doctors, and all of them said that I could keep using steroid cream. They refused to listen to me. When this happened, I had to remind myself that the doctors were just doing what they thought was right and were part of a larger system of Western medicine in general. I guess I just felt very disillusioned. But then I would remember how empowering it felt to be able to take matters into my own hands. Actually for me, this whole thing was kind of a blessing because it launched me into taking proper care of my body.

Don't beat yourself up for not getting immediate results. It will get worse before it gets better - your body is learning how to live without steroids. I know it sounds confusing but this video by Rob Stuart does an awesome job of explaining why your skin flares up before it heals. Remember - the steroid cream or cortisol cream was doing what your adrenal gland should have been doing - releasing cortisol. Cortisol is the anti-inflammatory hormone. So because you've been using cortisol cream, your adrenal gland has gotten lazy! It's forgotten how to do its job. It's going to take some time for it to get back into the workplace ;)

Also, sleeping can be the worst! It can really drive you crazy! This meditation by Headspace helps you work through an itch. In general, meditation helped me a lot, and I'd really recommend trying it if you haven't.

I'm really grateful for the friends and family who stuck by me even when I was an ugly, flaky mess. I felt really ugly sometimes, and they were the ones who made me feel beautiful. It sounds so cheesy, but it's true. It might be hard for them to understand at first what is going on, but as long as you believe in what you are doing, it will help you to communicate with others. When you're going through the hardest, itchiest, most painful times, remember the people you are thankful for, and I promise it'll make you feel better.

On the topic of gratitude, the Facebook support groups for TSW got me through some rough times. If you haven't joined yet, go look it up now! The people there have a firsthand understanding of what you're going through.

3. Circulate your body

You need to circulate your lymphatic system properly in order to heal your skin. It is like the sewage system of your body. Let's just say if the sewer doesn't flow, all the waste inside of you stays stagnant and comes out in your skin. Here's a great video explaining it simply.

Dry brushing literally saved my life. First of all, you can scratch yourself with it and satisfy that itch, but you won't break your skin because the brush is gentler than your nails. Second, it circulates your lymph and gets rid of dead skin! I do it every time before I shower or bathe. It is honestly amazing.

Like Rob Stuart said, your skin won't get better unless you exercise. This is probably the best way to circulate your lymphatic system. I do yoga because I like going at my own pace. If you buy a yoga mat, you can just do it whenever you want! There are lots of online tutorials - my favorite is Yoga with Adriene, because she's a great teacher who really goes into the theory and fundamentals behind yoga.

Another way to circulate is to do lymphatic massage on yourself. I did this a lot when I couldn't sleep, and I still do it every single day. It just feels amazing.

Improving your circulation will also help keep you warm - I know for the first couple months, I was freezing all the time, and I had to wear giant socks on top of my ice cold feet. It's since gotten better, but I still get cold very easily. It takes time!

4. Reinventing shower time

I can't tell you how many times I have come out of the shower crying - just in so much pain. But if you can get through burning skin and cold ass showers, you will come out so much stronger. Plus, you will never take for granted another shower in your entire life.

If you're taking showers, cold water is amazing for your skin. I know sometimes you just want to put that boiling water on, and it feels so good, but it really dries out your sensitive skin. Try some cold showers; after the first couple times, it's really not that bad. It's a lot less painful in the long run.

Another tip is to dab yourself with your towel or air-dry if you can. Rubbing yourself with a towel is just really harsh on your skin, but if it's something you've been doing your whole life, it's easy to forget.

In the beginning of this whole journey, I tried apple cider vinegar baths. They make the water kind of slippery and naturally moisturize you. It got kind of expensive after a while though, and as I got stronger, my skin didn't need it so much anymore.

Now, moisturizers. Oh god. Where do I even start. So in the beginning I was just slathering on shitloads of vaseline and wrapping myself in cling film. For oozing, you need zinc cream. Or you can also use diaper cream. I know, sexy right? But it does the trick. I've also tried coconut oil, olive oil, vitamin E oil (which is awesome by the way), and tea tree oil is great for preventing infections. I usually put a couple drops in my bath. I made my own cream using shea butter as a base and adding a mix of different oils. There are lots of recipes online if you Google it. And I also used this cream, which saved my life for a couple months. I also saw that a lot of people used CBD oil, and it really helped them, although I didn't try this myself.

So currently after much experimentation, I've pretty much stopped using soap. No I am not stinky ;) Soap actually strips the skin of many natural essential oils. It's especially drying for people who have sensitive skin. If you gotta use it (and sometimes you do) I would recommend Dr. Bronner's. I also stopped using shampoo - but that's a whole other story because I've also got curly hair, and I'm not even going to get into that right now. Just do your own research, and if your scalp is feeling dry, consider what your products are doing to you.

I also ended up doing moisturizer withdrawal because I found that the cream would actually irritate me sometimes. Again it's not easy in the beginning, but it trains your skin to moisturize itself. I'm usually very dry right when I come out of the bath, so I need some time to meditate or just chill until I feel like I'm back to "normal," whatever that is. Every time that I've tried using any moisturizer again, it really irritates me and makes my skin all red. I just feel a lot better when I'm not using it, but I think it's different for everyone. Your decision will also depend on what stage of TSW you're in. I could not have survived without cream in the beginning, so withdrawal is more for when your body gets stronger. It is awesome now though, because my skin is softer than it ever was before, even when I was using the cream.

5. Document your journey!

I'm guessing you're here in the first place because you did your own research, so congratulations! This is just a little reminder to keep researching, learning, and documenting. This is what gives us power. Here are a couple ideas (some that I did, and some I wish I did more of):

  • Take pictures of yourself
  • Take pictures of your products
  • Take pictures of your food
  • Write notes on what you're learning
  • Write down how you're feeling so you don't forget
  • Make a timeline of your TSW journey

The more you document, the more material you have to help. It's easier to do a little bit every day, rather than trying to remember what happened months ago. Everything that you go through now can help someone in the future.

The Genius Who Cuts Kate Middleton's Hair Deserves a Royal Title

"I'm not really a fan of Kate Middleton's hair," said no one ever. In fact, most of us strive to emulate the seemingly effortless bounce and shine of her locks. As a fellow expectant woman whose mane has dulled the more my bump grows, I am especially envious that the pregnant princess still sports perpetually glossy and perfectly coiffed and cut hair.

So who is responsible for Middleton's magical mane, other than good DNA? Her stylist/hair wizard is Amanda Cook Tucker. The hairdresser travels with the soon-to-be mom of three to keep her hair looking polished and photo-ready. According to recent reports, Cook Tucker's arsenal of princess-worthy hair styling aids includes no fewer than 13 brushes, six combs, two hairdryers, and a multitude of products.

Of course, if you don't have a great haircut, all the products in the world aren't going to matter. The stylist behind the princess's recent and widely admired lob cut is Joey Wheeler from London's posh and pricey Richard Ward salon. Over the Summer, he chopped off seven inches of Middleton's chestnut-hued tresses. She promptly donated the hair to a UK charity, Little Princess Trust, which makes wigs for children with cancer. So yes, Kate really is as great as she seems.

Richard Ward himself, who is described as being at the "forefront of British hairdressing" on his website, has also styled the royal's hair for quite sometime. A cut with the master stylist costs upwards of $450 but is so clearly worth every last penny. It's worth noting that Ward also created Prince William's recent buzz-worthy buzz cut, as well!

What Does Laser Hair Removal Really Cost? (It's Worth Every Penny)

Bare skin season is creeping up on us fast, which means that all of our skin clearing, toning, and smoothing starts now. Of all the services needed for a head-to-toe smooth, expect to dish out a pretty penny on laser hair removal. If it's any comfort, know this: not having to shave every day makes it totally worth it. While waxing and other hair removal methods may cost significantly less, you'll see a greater return on your investment if you opt for the longer lasting laser fix.

Andréa and Liza Young, sisters and co-owners of BEAM Laser Spa in New York, shared all the deets on how much you'll need, plus how to save.

1. Expect to Pay Per Part

There's a wide range in pricing between laser hair removal providers. Generally, larger body parts cost more than smaller body parts. This is because larger areas, for example full legs or a man's back, use up more time and more of the consumables needed for treatments. At BEAM, the least expensive area, the upper lip, is $100 per session, while larger areas such as full legs are $600 per session. They also offer packages which give a bit of a price break. Many other established and reputable laser hair removal businesses have similar pricing.

2. Know What You're Paying For

Pricing typically correlates with the overall quality of the service. This encompasses the type of equipment, whether it's purchased new from the manufacturer or from an "underground" (read: black market) source, the amount of training and experience of the providers, and the professionalism of the business. Consumers obviously may not know these factors upfront, but the price will often reflect it - so be cautious if the service seems like a steal.

3. Ways to Save

Most laser businesses offer a price incentive for purchased packages, so look for options that offer at least one session free or a seasonal promotion. At BEAM, packages of six are priced at the cost of five single sessions. After your sixth session, maintenance prices are significantly lower, but it all depends on how often you prefer touch-ups, and you must complete a full series before qualifying for maintenance pricing.

4. If It's Priced Really Low, Proceed With Caution

Sales and promotions per se are not bad, however Andréa and Liza strongly advise against purchasing from providers who offer laser hair removal prices that are on par with waxing services. Lower prices may signal that some corners are being cut. The actual machines may be outdated, the specialists not as thoroughly trained, or worst of all, the sterilization and hygiene practices may not be efficient - scary, and not worth the risks.

Be savvy when choosing a laser hair removal provider, and do not use price as the only deciding factor. Choosing based on price may leave you in an un-established, fly-by-night operation that doesn't have the experience, attention to sterilization, or proper equipment necessary to provide a safe and effective treatment.

5. Put Your Money Where Your Hair Is

Laser hair removal has a much higher return on investment than a lifetime of waxing. Treatments may cost more upfront, but usually pay for themselves in two to three years worth of waxing, making for a smarter investment with longer term results. The average cost of a lifetime of shaving is roughly $10,000, and the average cost of a lifetime of waxing is roughly $23,000, so the numbers speak for themselves.

6. All in Now, No Worries Later

Results are variable when dealing with a biological process, namely body hair growth. Clients may expect 75-80 percent reduction over 6-12 sessions, with some areas needing periodic yearly maintenance. Compare that to the daily hassle of shaving or weekly waxing sessions, and it's pretty much a no-brainer.

Why the Newest (and Grossest) Beauty Trend Is Total Bullsh*t

Let's just go ahead and insert all the poop emojis right now, because we're totally going there. Yep, we're talking about colonics and - specifically - how they may or may not affect your overall skin health. And if you're thinking, "How in the world does that part of my body have anything to do with the rest of me?" then we're all on the same page heading into this.

Over recent years, we've seen an uptick in the number of people voluntarily getting a colonic as a way to "detox" the body. We'll go more into those claims shortly (and also discuss if they hold up), but first let's discuss what a colonic is.

These High-Rated Hydrating Shampoos Are Like a Tall Glass of Water For Dry Hair

Cold weather can wreak havoc on skin, not to mention hair, but if your hair is normally dry, you know the situation is a little tougher. Dealing with dry hair is a year-round issue for you.

Here's the scoop on the most moisturizing hair cleansers that have stood out among beauty enthusiasts over the years, from Pureology's Hydrate Shampoo to Redken's All Soft, along with some newbies that might just be changing the hair game.

After 10 Years as a Makeup Artist, I'm Insanely Impressed With This Eye Shadow

I'm somewhat of a groupie when it comes to beauty brands. While I've spent a decade as a makeup artist, I have my tried-and-true brands that I will almost always go back to, especially if the formulas have stayed the same or experienced minimal change. You will almost always find me carrying a item from Glossier (because of course), a lipstick from Chanel, and my skincare routine hasn't changed in over a year. I'll try anything once, but I'm a brand loyalist.

That being said, I will also hate on my beloved brands so hard if I'm disappointed. I turn into Regina George, and if I'm less than impressed with a product, you can be sure I'm giving it away to an unsuspecting and totally enthused coworker.

When it comes to Glossier's new eye shadow, Lidstar, I was skeptical . . . no wait, absolutely positive that this new item in their cult collection would be a dud. After all, their focus is on skin, and color products can sometimes take a backseat in brands that specialize in one silo of personal care. Nonetheless, being the beauty tramp that I am, I order the twofer deal and added Moon and Cub to my cart. Complete Order. We got your order (thank you!), and we're getting it ready to ship out.

I spent the next few days circulating through Glossier Instagram photos and stories, reading about how Beyoncé wore Fawn to the Grammys and obsessing over how I really couldn't see the shades well enough on each actress who debuted them at the Oscars. In my mind, I was already handing these over to my sister. Good luck, hope you like 'em!

I'm an idiot.

After delicately opening the classic Glossier box, and pulling the newly suctioned lid and doe foot applicator out of the first color Moon, I was already feeling guilty. Sure I'd seen and used many cream eye shadows, but this was not quite even that. This was like the love child of Chanel Illusion D'Ombre and Stila Shimmer & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow. The texture was oh so soft, and the colors were beautiful.

But what had me holding my breath in excitement? What had me talking crap to myself, about myself? The control. THE CONTROL, PEOPLE! Not only did this formula and packaging allow for easy application, it flirted with me. Just one dab, and I had sheer and subtle shimmer, just a glimpse into the romance. A few more dabs, and I had a very recognizable shade, and the lid coverage was perfect, like the ever reliable friend zone. As I kept layering, the product transformed into a high pigmented shadow with blending capabilities that left me wanting more.

It was like three products in one, and I could build on top of multiple shades to get a more personalized color. Also, this little sucker isn't breaking if you drop it on the floor, a fate that my Becca Opal Pressed Powder Highlighter suffered just last week. It's like the product development team at Glossier knew I needed a more reliable way to shade my lids, without the fear of fall out or creasing. Oh and you know what else? It lasts for six hours.

So what did I learn? Well I learned that as a Pisces, I'm way too emotional and judgmental about the small stuff. I also learned to remember Glossier has impeccable style and sense, and I'm a Lidstar lifer.

You Can Thank This Woman For Your Favorite Hairbrush

There are three things I always, always keep in my day bag: a lip balm, a pack of gum, and this Mason Pearson Pocket Bristle Brush - a beauty tool I've become addicted to. A luxe hairbrush seems like an indulgent splurge, but it's really a necessity. After a barre or Spin class, I rely on it to smooth my strands into a sleek bun for running post-workout errands. It instantly fixes flyaways on a windy day or my sweaty cowlick on a humid one, and it feels like an amazing scalp massage when I use it.

It was actually a woman, Lyda Newman, whom we can thank for making this trusty tool readily available. We're not sure who invented the original brush or comb, but we know Newman put the first patent on it in 1898.

Not much is known about Newman's personal life other than that she was an African-American woman living in Manhattan during the time she put the brush on the market. According to women-inventors.com, Newman pioneered the use of synthetic bristles (instead of animal hair).

She also created a more sanitary, functional brush. Her version had built-in ventilation for impurities and dirt to fall through and be cleaned via an opening in the back. Her patent read: "The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved hair brush which is simple and durable in construction, very effective when in use, and arranged to permit of conveniently cleaning the brush whenever desired."

There you have it - just another reason not to brush off the power of women.

6 Hairstyles We Predict Will Take Over Coachella This Year

Award Season. Taxes. Coachella. Each year, we know these three things to be certain. For the latter, we know our Pinterest and Instagram feeds will be rampant with a mix of eccentric, bohemian, and rock-inspired beauty looks. With just weeks to go, Coachella will return for back-to-back weekends, and Sephora returns as the official beauty sponsor for the music and arts festival, which is fitting, because nailing down your makeup and hair situation for those long days is an art in itself, amirite?

With input from Sephora, we've honed in on the six hair trends you'll be seeing all over the festival. Sephora will set up shop on the festival grounds, offering professionals from Bumble and Bumble, IGK, Hush, and Amika to create these specific looks - along with necessities like air-conditioning and WiFi - so you can pop in for a touchup ahead of Cardi B's set or spend your time party hopping instead of primping. These looks are also relatively easy to DIY at home. Makeup touchups will be provided onsite as well by Sephora Collection, including holographic tattoos.

Overall, the hair theme this year is largely space inspired. Why? Galaxy everything is having a moment, and who doesn't want to blast into a different universe, if only for a weekend? For styling, think Zenon, Girl of the 21st Century - and please Google if you're not familiar - with buns, metallic and iridescent highlights, and hair tattoos. If space isn't your jam, there's plenty of rock and boho inspiration, too.

Check out the gallery to get inspired, along with product suggestions for achieving each look on your own.

Here's Exactly How Shakira Eats to Stay Healthy, According to Her Trainer

Shakira's on a diet . . . but it's not for weight loss! "It's not about losing weight," said Anna Kaiser, Shakira's personal trainer. "It's about prepping for a huge show and making sure that [her] body is prepared to do that in a safe and healthy way."

She told POPSUGAR that getting in great shape is simply a byproduct of eating well to feel good. "Usually when that happens, you also lean out, but I don't want it to be about 'let's get you as thin as possible for this!' Both have to occur; she has to be in the best shape of her life, but in a way that supports what she's doing on stage - her strongest self."

The celebrity trainer and founder of AKT shared the top three tactics she's using with Shakira for her world tour. These are diet tips we can all learn from!

Protein

Kaiser said part of the focus for fueling Shakira through a strenuous tour was "upping protein intake." One of her go-to options: "I love protein pancakes," said Kaiser. "They're high fiber, high protein . . . you mix three things together, and it takes you five minutes. Then you can put them in a Ziploc and keep them in the freezer or fridge." Her special recipe? "One and a half tablespoons of Greek yogurt plus oat bran, one egg, and a packet of stevia, if you want it to be sweeter."

Small Meals

Because Shakira has a crazy schedule and likes to record and rehearse late at night into the wee hours of the morning, Kaiser said, "It's important to make sure you're continuing to eat small meals throughout the day . . . it bumps your metabolism and it's easier to digest."

Combine the Right Foods

When you're on an international tour, dancing for hours on end, you need more energy than a few cups of coffee can deliver. Kaiser helps Shakira master this through her nutrition. The idea? "When your body is not in a digesting state, you have more energy." Kaiser told POPSUGAR that because the digestive process can be taxing, she has Shakira avoid combining different macronutrients in order to keep energy levels high.

"I have her on a very digestible diet with food-combining," she said. "You don't want to combine a protein and a complex carbohydrate. Instead, you'd want just protein and vegetables or complex carbohydrates and vegetables. Combining protein with complex carbohydrates [in one meal] may make you feel tired."

"Some [foods] take longer to digest than others; this ends up pausing the digestion," Kaiser said, using protein as an example. She also tells Shakira to "eat fruit by itself and eat dairy by itself, because the digestive enzymes are different."

The idea behind all three tactics - getting enough protein, eating small meals frequently, and combining - is a focus on energy and strength to keep Shakira feeling healthy and powerful through her tour. "If you're eating smaller meals and combining food the right way, [your digestion] burns the food much more effectively and feeds your body so that you're actively using those calories, and you're not getting so tired that you have to rest or take time out of your day. You're able to continue throughout your day with lots of energy."

All of Selena Gomez's Emotions Are Written Right There on Her Sweatshirt

Selena Gomez doesn't hide her emotions. If you really want to know what she's thinking, all you have to do is look at her clothes. George Clooney's Letter to Parkland Students Truly Deserves to Be Read by Everyone

George and Amal Clooney will be walking in the March For Our Lives rally on Saturday in Washington DC, and prior to the event, the actor penned a heartfelt letter to the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in The Guardian.

In his note on Friday, George thanked the Parkland, FL, students for making "the country a safer place" and praised them for the amazing work that they're doing. "The fact that no adults will speak on the stage in DC is a powerful message to the world that if we can't do something about gun violence, then you will," George wrote. "It's a once in a lifetime opportunity to point to this moment and say it belongs to you. You certainly should do what you want, but that would be my hope for you."

Back in February, George and Amal donated a whopping $500,000 to the cause, and shortly after, Amal attended the Watermark Conference For Women in San Jose, CA, where she delivered a touching speech about the bravery of Parkland students. "I am just blown away by these students. I think they are doing an amazing job turning a tragedy into advocacy," Amal told the crowd. "They are the best vehicle and best hope for change. I really hope that they will succeed and make a meaningful difference."

This Hilarious Black Panther Joke Will Make You Ask, "IS THIS YOUR MEME?!"

The following contains light spoilers for Black Panther.

The moment I watched the epic challenge for the throne between T'Challa and Erik Killmonger in Black Panther, I knew it was an iconic scene that would go down in superhero movie history. I also, admittedly, had a feeling that it would become a meme. And as usual, Twitter has come through . . . and then some. The social network has managed to create a hilarious movement out of the savage moment when Killmonger poses a tough question to Wakanda: "Is this your king?"

While the question is, in context, posed after Killmonger delivers a serious ass-whooping to T'Challa, Twitter has turned it into an ever-relevant meme used to ridicule something. Be it your bank account balance or your (lack of a) beach body, the Killmonger challenge meme is a perfect fit. This isn't the first meme adjacent to Black Panther, of course; fan-favorite character Shuri even references one of the most popular memes on Vine in the movie itself! But I have to admit, this one is my absolute favorite.

Check out some of the most hilarious examples of the Killmonger meme below, and prepare for it to take over your entire life, if it hasn't already. Dare we ask, "Is this your Twitter feed?!"

MoviePass Just Lowered Its Prices EVEN More - Now You Can See Endless Films For $7 a Month

Somewhere between the beginning of time and 2018, going to the movies got expensive as hell. MoviePass is aiming to disrupt the movie theater industry with its reduced-price subscription service, and now the company is running a promotion that lowers the price to just $6.95 per month. This latest offer is for a "limited time" and is a few dollars cheaper than MoviePass's regular price of $9.95 per month. It's hands down one of the best deals for getting your buzz-worthy-movie fix, and MoviePass is hoping this will get more people on board with the idea.

Aside from the $6.95 monthly charge, there's also a one-time processing fee of $6.55, and I'm no mathematician, but according to my calculations . . . yep, that's still a lot less than what you'd typically spend on just a couple of movies. A MoviePass subscription, which comes in the form of a card mailed to you, means you can see one movie per day (at participating theaters, of which there are many), and you get to skip the ticket fee altogether.

MoviePass cofounder Mitch Lowe, who's also a former Netflix and Redbox executive, said MoviePass hopes to reach 5 million subscribers by the end of 2018. "Over 50 percent of our subscribers are millennials, the people who are abandoning theater the most," he said at a media presentation. While this startup just might end up being too good to be true, we'll take any chance to see cheaper movies while it lasts.

This College Knows That Students REALLY Want Hogwarts Letters, So It Did . . . This

Sure, getting into college is cool . . . but let's be real. What millennials and Gen Z-ers really want out of life is acceptance into the only academic institution that truly matters: the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Apparently, the folks at Boston College both recognize and support this, because they admitted the incoming freshman class of 2022 with a video worthy of Harry Potter and his Hogwarts peers.

Considering the fact that Boston College's library has been casually referred to as "the Harry Potter library" for years, it makes for perfect wizarding world fodder in the admissions video when bedecked with faux floating candles. The rest of the video is just as magical - think moving newspaper photos, eagles delivering mail, studying by lamplight, and the iconic movie score that will give you chills.

Watch the video above, and it'll fill you with a weird mix of envy, nostalgia, and wistfulness . . . back in my day, we only got a plain ol' letter! With an admissions video that sets the bar like this, we've got exceptionally high hopes for the class of 2022.

Hold Up, Did Meghan Markle Just Drop a Major Baby Hint? We'll Let You Decide

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry surprised everyone with a trip to Northern Ireland on Friday, and it looks like she might already have babies on the brain. While touring a science park, the picture-perfect pair met with a couple, Sinead and Adam Murphy, that makes innovative and hypoallergenic baby products. "I'm sure at some point we'll need the whole thing," Meghan said as she pointed to one of the items.

Sinead later spoke to reporters about Meghan and Harry's special visit, saying, "They seemed very engaged with the products. Harry was particularly interested in the bath. I wonder if he has witnessed bath time with his nephew or niece."

Could Meghan's sweet interaction with a little girl outside have something to do with her comment? Or, is Meghan just excited about becoming an aunt to Kate Middleton and Prince William's third royal baby? Harry has said that he wants to "start a family in the near future." Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

This Small (but Sweet) Thing Randall Does With His Kids Will Only Make You Love Him More

In addition to being an incredible partner, brother, son, and overall human being, Randall Pearson's role as a father is by far one of the greatest reasons to love the This Is Us character. But it's not the fact that he does his daughters' hair in the morning, he helps with their school projects, or that he's an endless source of cheesy dad jokes - it's something much more subtle. In fact, this tiny gesture is actually one of his biggest acts of love of all.

One thing I noticed while binge-watching the family drama is how often Randall kneels when he talks to his children. He doesn't try to assert authority over Tess, Annie, or Déjà by towering over them; he positions himself either lower than them on the ground or at equal height on the bed. Above all, he listens with intent every single time, never invalidating their thoughts or concerns. You never get the impression of an "I'm the parent, you're the child" sort of dynamic. It's closer to "I love you, let me hear you."

I think this small gesture has also been critical to Randall's blooming relationship with Déjà. It's evident since day one by the way she flinches at his entrance that she fears the presence of male figures. By kneeling, Randall makes himself vulnerable to Déjà and shows her that she's safe and heard.

Just file this under the many reasons Randall is the best damn part about This Is Us.

Kate Reveals George and Charlotte's Favorite Family Activity - and It's Totally Relatable

Prince George and Princess Charlotte may be royals, but let's not forget that they're kids first and foremost. We already know that George loves police cars and wants to be a part of the force one day and that Charlotte is fluent in Spanish and loves to dance, but what about their favorite family activity?

On Thursday, during Kate Middleton's latest public outing before she and Prince William become a family of five, the duchess revealed that George and Charlotte love making pizza dough. "They love it because they can get their hands messy," Kate explained.

While Kate loves making pizza with her kids, William previously shared that his favorite dish to make for his family is a roast. "I do like cooking, but I'm not very good," he said back in November. "I like a roast. So a bit of roast chicken or a steak. I like it medium rare. I like it quite alive." Pizza and a roast? Where do we sign up?

Tyler Perry Reveals the Hilarious Reason He Refused to Let Blue Ivy Win Their Bidding War

Terry Perry recently went head-to-head in a bidding war with the one and only Blue Ivy Carter at this year's Wearable Art Gala in LA, and if you thought he was going to let the 6-year-old outbid him, think again. In an interview with the Today show on Thursday, the director - who ended up taking home a Sidney Poitier acrylic painting for a cool $20,000 - explained how the whole thing went down.

"Somebody else was bidding against me. I didn't know who it was," Tyler said. "I look over and it's her. She's taking the paddle out of Jay's hand and Beyoncé's hand and she's bidding. I'm like, this kid's not outbidding me today. You gonna learn today, little girl, I'm getting this painting."

Even though Blue lost out on the Sidney painting, she did win another art piece by Samuel Levi Jones for $10,000. Beyoncé also got in on the fun and made a winning bid at $17,000 on a pair of Lorraine Schwartz panther earrings that she previously wore to an event.

Cloak & Dagger Is Marvel's Superhero Romeo and Juliet - and You'll Be Obsessed

Do you ever see a trailer and just know in your bones that a show is going to be special? It's how I felt about A Handmaid's Tale and Westworld and This Is Us before they premiered . . . and it's also how I've felt about Freeform's upcoming Marvel series, Cloak & Dagger, since I saw the very first sneak peek.

As a comics reader and a teen drama TV enthusiast - it's my guilty pleasure, OK? - the show's "Romeo and Juliet, but in a superhero universe" vibe is one that gives me the special gut feeling that it's going to be big. And once you watch the trailer, you'll feel it too.

Here's everything you need to know about the show that will undoubtedly become your new obsession starting this Summer.

Who's starring?

Fresh face Aubrey Joseph will star as Tyrone (Cloak), and Disney Channel alum Olivia Holt will play Tandy (Dagger). You can read more about their respective characters here.

They'll be joined on screen by Andrea Roth (Rescue Me), Gloria Reuben (Mr. Robot), Miles Mussenden (Queen Sugar), Carl Lundstedt (Grey's Anatomy), James Saito (Life of Pi), and J.D. Evermore (The Walking Dead).

What's it about?

"Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson come from starkly different backgrounds, each growing up with a secret they never dared share with another soul," Freeform describes of Cloak & Dagger, which is based on cult-favorite Marvel comic characters of the same name. The series will follow Tandy and Tyrone as they realize secret superpowers stemming from a tragic storm that rocked their worlds as children . . . and they'll discover how they balance each other as heroes and as regular teenagers.

While Tandy's power to emit light daggers and Tyrone's ability to shroud others in darkness provide some complications for their everyday lives, their undeniable feelings for each other will unearth a whole different set of obstacles for their new role as heroes and for their budding romance.

When does it start?

The show is slated for a two-hour premiere on Freeform on June 7, 2018.

What are people saying about it?

First reviews from screeners at SXSW and WonderCon are calling Cloak & Dagger a must watch - if nothing else, for the chemistry between Holt and Joseph. And knowing Freeform's knack for addictive teen dramas, we've got high hopes based on these first looks at the series.

Meghan Markle, the Sweetest Human, Runs Through the Rain in Heels to Greet a Young Girl

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made a surprise appearance in Northern Ireland on Friday. The weather was unfortunately a bit rainy, but that didn't stop the royal-to-be from making the most out of her time in Belfast (and looking totally fashionable through it all).

As Meghan walked in front of a crowd on the streets, the former Suits actress spotted a young girl in a bright red coat behind the barricades and simply couldn't resist saying hello. Meghan quickly dashed through the rain, umbrella in hand, effortlessly maintaining her balance in a pair of velvet heels (you go, girl!) to greet the lucky youngster. The two held hands and talked for a few moments before Meghan went on to greet others in the crowd. Ugh, the things we would do to have been a fly on the wall (er, her umbrella?) to hear that conversation!

Of course, this isn't the first time Meghan has interacted with kids during royal outings. During a recent visit to Birmingham, she shared an inspiring conversation with a 10-year-old and also met with a young girl at the Commonwealth Day service in London a week later. Meghan sure is shaping up to be quite the kid magnet, just like Harry!

Celine Dion Cancels Her Shows in Las Vegas to Undergo a "Surgical Procedure"

Celine Dion is putting her Las Vegas residency on hold while she "undergoes a minimally invasive surgical procedure." The 49-year-old singer and mother of three announced on Facebook on Wednesday that all of her scheduled shows from March 27 through April 18 at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace have been canceled.

"Céline has been dealing with a condition in her middle ear known as Patulous Eustachian tube, which causes hearing irregularities, and makes it extremely difficult to sing," the post states. "She has been experiencing this condition for the past 12-18 months but it has been successfully treated with various ear drop medications. During the past couple of weeks these medications have no longer been working to treat the condition, so she will undergo a minimally invasive surgical procedure to correct the problem."

Celine also apologized to her fans and expressed her sadness. "My luck hasn't been very good lately," she said. "I've been so looking forward to doing my shows again and this happens. I just can't believe it! I apologize to everyone who planned to travel to Las Vegas to see my show. I know how disappointing this is, and I'm so sorry."

Back in January, Celine canceled a series of her shows after receiving strict orders from her doctor. She is set to return to the stage on May 22. We wish Celine a speedy recovery!

Will There Be a Tomb Raider Sequel? Here's What We Know

Warning: Mild spoilers for Tomb Raider below!

We were already excited when the news of the Tomb Raider reboot was first announced, and now we have strong reasons to believe there will be even more Lara Croft coming to the big screen. Following the action-packed events that take place in the reboot, we end with a postcredit scene of Croft (Alicia Vikander) purchasing two silver pistols. This is a clear indication that she's ready to set off on a new mission, one that will hopefully end with her taking down the corrupt Trinity organization led by Ana Miller (Kristin Scott Thomas), a longtime family friend.

If Tomb Raider is a commercial success, it'll be hard to see why there wouldn't be a sequel. Judging by the recent string of box office hits, including films like Wonder Woman and Girls Trip, it's clear there's an appetite for badass female leads on screen, and this action-adventure film delivers all that and more. On top of that, Vikander herself has expressed interest in doing another Tomb Raider movie.

The Swedish actress recently participated in a Q&A for GameStop, where she revealed she would "love to" return for a sequel. "Yes, I adored taking on the role of Lara," she said. "We'll see. If there's an audience out there for it, then I would." Although nothing has been confirmed officially, critics are praising Vikander's performance (even if the film itself is getting more middling reviews) and looking forward to the sequel. It's looking more and more likely that we will see another installment in Lara's story down the line.

Jimmy Fallon and Will Smith Remixed Your Favorite TV Theme Songs - Including Fresh Prince!

Jimmy Fallon and Will Smith are back at it with yet another epic joint performance on The Tonight Show, and this one just might rival that time they took us through the evolution of hip-hop dancing back in 2014. The dynamic duo teamed up to sing a glorious mashup of TV show theme songs, and y'all, it was LIT. From Golden Girls and Three's Company to Full House and The Jeffersons, their remix was like a trip down memory lane. And of course, they saved the best for last, belting out the theme song for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air while dancing through the crowd. Needless to say, the entire audience was on their feet and groovin' along to the throwback hit. Watch Fallon and Smith break it down in their "History of TV Theme Songs" skit above.
