Starbucks Fans Have Some, Um . . . FEELINGS About the Crystal Ball Frappuccino
Gather round, children, for a tale about the days of old. And by "old," I mean wayyyyy back in 2017 when Starbucks introduced a little thing called the Unicorn Frappuccino. The blue and pink drink quickly took over the cultural conversation, compelling people to visit the coffee chain in droves for a taste of its fantasy-creature-inspired flavor - which was, weirdly, quite sour - and of course, trendy Instagram photos. And now, Starbucks is introducing a new drink with similar potential to captivate the brand's loyal customers: the Crystal Ball Frappuccino, which is available at participating locations from March 22 through March 26.
But memories of the long lines and general Instagram-fueled chaos of the Unicorn Frappuccino are inspiring reactions across the board. From those who are scared to enter a Starbucks for the period when the Crystal Ball concoction will be available to those curious folks who'll be first in line, Starbucks fans have all sorts of feelings about the limited-time drink! Read some of the funniest reactions from fans and baristas, then read about what the Crystal Ball Frappuccino looks and tastes like.

Burning Question: Why Does Pineapple Irritate Your Mouth?
Recently I cut myself some fresh pineapple, then promptly proceeded to eat a lot of it before remembering that every time I eat a copious amount of pineapple, the roof of my mouth becomes itchy and sore. So why is this condition a common complaint among fresh pineapple aficionados?
Pineapples contain a plant protease enzyme called bromelain. Because it readily breaks down protein, bromelain is frequently used as a natural meat tenderizer. In addition, bromelain may also induce a prickly sensation in the mouth when consumed.
Although the enzyme is present in all parts of the pineapple plant, it's most concentrated in the stem, the hard piece in the middle of the fruit, which is much more fibrous and chewy but still edible. Many people believe that letting a pineapple sit overnight helps take away the irritation factor, but one surefire way to alleviate the burn is to cut out the core.
Disney Just Dropped 2 Pieces of Millennial Pink Merchandise You'll Be Dying to Own
Disney is doing something right when it comes to social media, and it's all in the ears . . . literally. It seems impossible that the company could dream up any more Instagrammable mouse ears after so freakin' many, but somehow it just keeps 'em coming! And with its latest ear release, Disney went ahead and made all of our lives easier by also releasing a matching spirit jersey right from the get-go . . . so now, you can get your fill of millennial pink goodness, Disney style.
While the sequined, millennial pink ears might look quite similar to the rose gold version that broke the internet in 2017, they're actually lighter and more of the baby pink shade that has become equated with '90s kids. The matching spirit jersey features the appropriate Disney park name displayed in glitter across the back, which means you can weigh in on the ever-contentious issue: which is better - Disneyland or Walt Disney World?
According to Disney Style, both the ears and the jersey will be available in both Anaheim and Orlando starting in April. So mark your calendars - it's time to show off your millennial pride at the parks!
The Embarrassing Side Effect of Peeps Oreos
Update: The 2018 version of Peeps Oreos features a chocolate cookie and purple creme filling. The seasonal Oreos were first introduced in 2017 with a bright-pink filling, and let's never forget how they made some people . . . feel.
Original story: Dear people of the internet,
We're genuinely sorry for what we're about to report. We don't WANT to cover this, but so many have discussed this issue that it must be addressed.
Peeps Oreos, pictured above, are seemingly innocent. Artificial, yes, but pretty tasty - we gave them a fair review! But some people are claiming there's an unpleasant (and rather embarrassing) side effect: Peeps Oreos are turning their poop pink.
I KNOW.
So gross, and how does that even happen? Well, for starters, let's discuss another claim people are making: that the Oreos turn your saliva pink, too. As people who have in fact eaten a couple of the cookies, we can vouch for this. Eating the bright-pink frosting does indeed coat your tongue in a vibrant pink hue. Now, to achieve pink poop, you'd have to eat nearly an entire package, right? It seems the people whose bowel experiences have turned to the dark (pink) side did actually eat a whole package.
My roommate ate a whole pack of oreo Peeps and left a pink stain in the toilet.
- ElleLeven (@Barbeydahl) February 23, 2017
Guys. I ate a whole package of Peep Oreos today...and my poop is pink.
- Zach Moree (@zach_moree) March 1, 2017
Consider yourself warned. Eat Peeps Oreos at your own risk, and if you can't stop at just two Oreos, may we suggest turning to regular Oreos instead?
Sincerely,
A fellow Oreo enthusiast looking out for your health
30+ Cuba Travel Tips You Need to Know Before You Go
I had barely put down my fork after finishing a Cuban meal prepared in a privately owned restaurant called a paladar when someone grabbed my hand and pulled me to my feet. Live music accompanied our meal, and turning down an impromptu salsa dance just isn't acceptable - so dance I did.
Light-footed from sips of Havana Club rum and ready to try out the moves I learned at a lesson earlier in the week, I couldn't help but smile at my situation. Traveling to Cuba as an American means a lot of things. It means navigating a rather complicated system of rules, restrictions, and politics. It means dealing with the reality of a president who is currently making it harder by the day to experience all this country - just 90 miles off the United States coast - has to offer. It means understanding and respecting the harder realities of what Cubans and Cuban-Americans have gone through and are still going through - something tourists should be aware of.
I was able to travel to Cuba with Backroads, an active travel company that made a biking trip through the country launching in January 2017 - full of logistical complications and red tape - look like a breeze and seem like a complete dream.
The trip began in Havana, a city with crumbling historical homes juxtaposed beside colorful structures and shiny, newly reconstructed buildings. We biked daily through towns along the northern coast, by farmland, over hills, and past parts of lush jungle and forest. Experiencing a trip like this, in the open air rather than closed up in a tour bus or car, was like nothing else I've ever done. After eight days, a thousand answers and even more questions, new friendships with Cubans, and yes, a few cigars and sips of Cuban coffee and rum, I learned a thing or two about a place that is in some ways a bit of a mystery to many Americans, due in large part to the embargo and the nature of US-Cuba relations for the past 50+ years.
These takeaways and tips will help you plan your Cuban trip and will hopefully help make your time on this Caribbean island as wonderful (and enlightening!) as my own experience. I'm already counting down the days until I can return to this beautiful place.

Why There's So Much to Adore About the Instant Pot
Everyone has been talking about the Instant Pot. It's currently a top-selling kitchen item on Amazon. Despite its widespread popularity, is the multifunctional cooking device worth it? For a while, I scorned the Instant Pot like a unitasker. I already owned a rice cooker, pressure cooker, and slow cooker, after all. So why would I spend the cash for another appliance? Despite my initial judgments, I still felt pulled to try the cooker out and determine if it's a gimmicky fad or not. Let's just say, the results really surprised me and greatly exceeded my expectations. If you're wondering if an Instant Pot is for you (or IP, as seasoned users call it), here's a list of awesome things to know about the Instant Pot.
- Cook all the things in record time. The Instant Pot is essentially a pressure cooker that also has sauté and slow-cooker functions. Pressure cookers reduce cook time significantly. We're talking steel-cut oats in 10 minutes and chicken breasts in eight minutes. Most, if not all, dishes can be prepared in 20 minutes or less.
- The sauté function is truly awesome. You can adjust the heat, but I found it caramelizes veggies and meat faster and more uniformly than even stovetop cooking. As a bonus, nothing caked onto the bottom of my IP.
- You can switch between functions. Sear meat in the sauté function, then pressure cook or slow-cook it! Pressure cook something, then keep it warm. Changing up the functions allows you to create complex dishes in one pot.
- It's easy to use. Though there are lots of buttons on an Instant Pot and seemingly random beeps, the user manual and recipe guide (that come with the cooker) break each one down quickly so you can dive right into cooking with your device. Just be sure to read them! You shouldn't go rogue with this device.
- It does it all. While there are obvious things like making broth, soups, shredded chicken, and chili, the cooker does some extraordinary things. Make a big batch of eggs (frittata style). Steam up cake and cheesecake. Use it as a rice cooker. Defrost and cook frozen-solid meat in minutes. Forgo soaking dried beans and cook them in about 20 minutes. Make mac and cheese and other pasta dishes in only one pot. The list goes on . . .
- Cleaning is a breeze. I laughed as I lifted the IP pot and rinsed it in record time. The lightweight pot seems to be nonstick (in my experience), so all it needs is a fast, sudsy scrub-down, no exertion required.
- There's endless learning. Instant Pot's website and Pinterest's results for Instant Pot are two awesome sources of recipe inspiration and tips. There's also Facebook's Instant Pot Community that's very active (over a million users), where you can post or read troubleshooting questions and recipes.
All right, I love my Instant Pot. It's the ideal cooking appliance for busy people who are on a budget and want to cook homemade meals but lack one crucial thing: time! While I'm sure there are downsides to the Instant Pot, I haven't discovered them yet.
Dubai's Luxury Hotel Is Downright Ridiculous - Wait Until You See the Amenities
The Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai is so luxurious and over the top, we didn't know a place like this could ever exist. It's the stuff your fantasies are made of. Set on an artificial island just 920 feet from Jumeirah Beach, the building stands as the third tallest hotel in the world.

But enjoying this hotel comes at a cost; rooms start at around $1,100 per night. Check out all the amazing experiences you could have if you book a room at this hot spot in Dubai.
How to Pack a Perfect Mason Jar Salad
Packing a to-go salad in a mason jar seems like a great idea - it's an easy way to transport a vibrant, veggie-heavy meal without worries of dressing leaking into your bag - but if improperly assembled, it may end up underdressed, soggy, or less than fresh. Don't let that happen to you! Instead, follow this step-by-step guide, excerpted from Julia Mirabella's Mason Jar Salads and More: 50 Layered Lunches to Grab and Go ($16).

Ditch Distractions and Get Productive With a Method Called "Deep Work"
I first heard about the idea of "deep work" while listening to a podcast on my way to work. NPR's Shankar Vedantam interviewed Cal Newport, a computer scientist and Georgetown professor, about his research and insights on the subject.
Newport shared how he manages to get a seemingly impossible amount of work done - including writing books, publishing academic papers, and teaching courses - all while leaving work by 5:30 p.m. and making time for his family and personal life.
I don't have a lot in common professionally with Newport, but his success is undeniable and inspired me to check out his book Deep Work: Rules For Focused Success in a Distracted World to learn about how I could be more productive and improve my focus.
What is deep work?
Deep work boils down to the relatively simple idea that working distraction-free allows you to both improve your professional capabilities and produce higher-quality, more valuable work.
Take a second to think about your work habits. How often do you stop to check social media? Or immediately look up whatever random idea pops into your head? Or answer an email the second you receive it? In the span of writing this intro alone, I've had to resist the urge to do everything from chiming in on a funny group text to looking up recipes for the banana muffins that I would like to make later.
Newport argues that the state of multitasking and constant distraction we live in is seriously affecting our work. It usually feels like there's never enough time to do everything we want to as a result of the daily grind of unfulfilling but necessary tasks. And having fragments of our focus in a million places at once can reduce our ability to contribute our best work in the current moment. Deep work tackles this by saying you can reevaluate your habits to use your time more productively, create more meaningful work, and get better at what you do so you can accomplish more than you ever thought possible.
How can I try deep work?
A lot of the things distracting us aren't inherently bad; they are often a necessary part of our jobs or day-to-day life . . . which unfortunately makes it even more difficult to overcome the habits affecting our ability to concentrate.
Even though it would take some serious effort, I couldn't shake the idea that I was holding myself back by being unwilling to challenge myself to work smarter.
Here are some of the top tips I learned from Deep Work that you can apply to help you crush your goals both at work and at home.
- Block off time to focus.
You probably spend less time than you realize getting down to work without interruption. If you put it in your calendar, it's easier to commit to a distraction-free block of time. Get to work before everyone else or find an hour when you can sit in a quiet place and knock out an assignment or make headway on a project. Set ground rules for that time, like no emails or Twitter breaks. It seemed counterintuitive to me to think I could simply decide when I would do good work. I tend to wait for a good idea (or deadline) to strike. However, the experts say this is a common mistake. We can facilitate inspiration by setting aside time to work hard. - Set boundaries to stay on track.
In many office cultures, we often try to look really busy so everyone else knows we're working. Newport calls this "busyness as a proxy for activity" - basically, doing lots of stuff in a visible manner but not actually getting a whole lot done, besides feeling more stressed. We all get sucked into situations like scrambling to be the first to answer the boss's email. But stopping what you're doing to answer every message that comes through makes it a lot more difficult and time-consuming to jump back into the task you were previously working on, even if you don't realize it. Rather than having my email always open in front of me, I started trying to wait 30 minutes in between inbox checks. It turns out not all that much can't wait a half-hour for your response. You don't have to be a hermit or risk getting in trouble, but you can take back some control over your workday to accomplish a bigger goal. - Know when to disconnect.
As we're starting to learn more about the benefits of taking time to disconnect, it's not uncommon to see people "detox," whether it's one day per week device-free or a whole month. Newport takes a different approach. Instead, he says you should schedule time when you are allowed to go online, like during lunch or once an hour. That way you give yourself a break from focusing, rather than trying to take a break from distraction. For this to work, it's crucial that you stick to your rule. This means no defaulting to your phone to kill time while you wait for your friend at the bar or for a meeting to start, unless it's during a scheduled break. Making this a habit gives your brain a workout in resisting mindless distraction, even when you really want to give in to boredom with something more entertaining. - Schedule your free time, too.
You know that one friend who seems to magically have time for a demanding job and a fabulous social life, plus traveling, volunteering, and on and on, all while looking great and getting eight hours of sleep a night? Well, she's not necessarily any more amazing than you, but she probably does schedule out her time carefully. Just like you plan your workday, plan what you'll do in your downtime. These things don't necessarily have to be productive. You can plan to do relaxing activities like watching a show, taking a bath, or calling a friend, all of which give your brain a chance to relax and recover. But you'll probably find that by paying more attention to what you're doing (and not falling into deep, dark Instagram black holes), you'll free up time to dig in to other interests too, like brushing up on a language app or trying to cook more.
We've all seen or shared the "You have the same amount of hours in a day as Beyoncé" quote on Pinterest or Instagram. But it's only relatable because it's true! I suspect the people we admire most aren't only super hardworking or talented. They also make the most of their time, even when it's difficult to do so. If left unchecked, distractions impair our ability to filter out the noise and focus on building the best version of ourselves. It's not easy to make the changes that Newport lays out in Deep Work. But if you want to take your career goals to the next level, it's certainly worth the effort to try.
The Harmful Effects of Instant Ramen Noodles
Yes, you know that instant ramen isn't good for you, but studies have confirmed just how harmful the prepackaged food can really be. A study in the Journal of Nutrition links instant noodle consumption with heart risk, particularly in women. The researchers conducted a study in South Korea, where consumption of instant noodles is the highest in the world, with more than 10,700 people ranging in age from 19 to 64. The results? "Women who consume instant noodles frequently were found to be more likely to have metabolic syndrome - the group of risk factors, including obesity and high blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar, that increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes."
The harmful effects were predominantly found in women and not men. Part of the study reads, "Women - though not men - who ate instant noodles at least twice a week showed a 68 percent higher risk of metabolic syndrome," which is a syndrome that can increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
The high sodium content in instant noodle products is obvious, but the main culprit is the noodles themselves. In another study by Dr. Braden Kuo, director of the gastrointestinal motility laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital at Harvard University, the doctor found unsettling results after testing digestion of the noodles. He used a tiny camera to study the breakdown of instant ramen noodles in the stomach and found out just how difficult it is for your body to digest the preservative-filled noodles. Warning: the photos are graphic. A preservative called TBHQ, which is found in many processed foods including Reese's and Chicken McNuggets, extends shelf life of fatty foods and makes them harder to digest. It's one of the many ingredients in Maruchan Chicken Ramen.
If you're hopelessly devoted to instant ramen (and it's a budget-friendly staple in your life), all hope is not lost. Dr. Frank B. Hu, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard, told The New York Times, "Once or twice a month is not a problem, but a few times a week really is."
Moral of the story: eating college-friendly instant ramen is OK, but moderation is key.
My Dog Improves My Mental Health and Happiness in the Best Possible Ways
I've shuffled through a lot of frames in my life, both euphoric and traumatic. There was the tragedy in childhood that still causes me to jolt at the sound of sirens and the abusive relationship in early adulthood that nearly smothered my sense of self. But there was also the indescribable afternoon spent sipping Rosé while traversing across Napa Valley with my family and the experience of some of my wildest, most ambitious career goals being realized. Through the highs, lows, and everything in between, I have come to know for certain that nothing quite compares to a wet nose bonking up against me at the end of the day.
Five years ago, just days after my husband and I exchanged vows of forever under an oak tree on his family's 200-year-old property, we made an Autumn drive through the country to find the other love of my life. We would name her Lucy.
She was one of three girls remaining in her litter of long-haired Dachshunds. She looked like a character Walt Disney would have drawn, cutting her gaze from side to side as though she was full of hope but void of expectation. My husband was drawn like a magnet to her, cooing, "Lacey, I like this one . . ." as he scooped her up from her blanket in a box and kissed her tiny snout softly. He then passed her over to me, and she curled her head into my neck. Her brown eyes locked into mine as if to say, "I'm home."
Half an hour later, my husband was jerking the car over to the side of the road because - this time - she had projectile vomited all of her puppy chow onto my neck. And it was sort of ominous. In the months that followed, she urinated into everything from the air vents in our home to my brand-new red suede booties, and once into my freshly blown-out hair while I stretched across the couch. Thankfully, life with her would become less frightful on the other side of puppyhood.
Our bond deepened every time she rolled onto her back, playfully wooing me for a belly rub. It expanded every time her fur stood at attention upon an "intruder" daring to cross our path. She'd bark and hop wildly, once even untying an electrician's shoelaces when he took a step too close to me. I discovered that, although she has the stature of an oversize squirrel, she has the heart of a lion. And I learned all of the ways she would faithfully show up to comfort me - through silly arguments with girlfriends and inexplicable bouts of self-deprecation to the unexpected visits from thoughts carrying old traumas and the grief of the opportunity on high that dangled like a carrot before me, only to flutter away with the inevitable "sorry, girl - maybe next time."
She has taught me more about forgiveness, love, loyalty, and the sweetness of just being in the "now" than any book, motivational speech, or mentor ever has.
When I'm sick, it's as though she is trying to conquer my woes with all of the might of her 15-pound body. Not long ago, I was plagued with food poisoning. I spent the night in a fetal position, groaning and shivering under the comforter. My husband rubbed my hand until he fell asleep. Lucy curled onto my pillow, her chin pressing against my forehead protectively. Anytime I dared to toss, turn, or pull away, she'd inch her way back to me, determined to keep her fur pressed against my clammy, aching skin.
When I'm anxious, she senses it. She will search the entire house to find me, then hover over me as though she is my guardian. One afternoon not long ago, I was sprawled across my yoga mat, staring blankly up at the ceiling, caught in a tornado of overwhelm that was brought on by an impossible to-do list. Just as the tears and F-bombs were about to flow, I saw her snout positioned mere inches from my face, her whiskers spread out and glistening in the golden afternoon sunlight like an armor over me. All I could do was let the laughter burst straight out of me.
In essence, my dog's presence rattles me awake and alerts me to all of the beauty in the world. Each time my husband and I take her for walks, she smiles, trots, and wags her entire body in such a way that, for me, I don't need much else in the way of a pep talk. She is carried by curiosity and wonder, whisked by the lightness of having breath. Every moment for her is an adventure. She is in awe of the birds, the squirrels, the smells, and the sun - just relishing the wind in her fur. The mere act of witnessing her being so alive, happy, and full of wonderment is enough to invite me to also be that alive, happy, and full of wonderment.
I'm sure some people think my adoration of her is excessive. Because, most of the time, she takes the limelight in my Instagram stories. I dote over her the way most people dote over their newborn babies. But I don't care what anyone thinks. Lucy is the most abundant and majestic source of entertainment, hilarity, and comfort I've ever known. She may be an animal, but she is one of the most profound presences of light and truth in my life. She has taught me more about forgiveness, love, loyalty, and the sweetness of just being in the "now" than any book, motivational speech, or mentor ever has.
Do Not Make the Mistake of Booking a One-Way International Flight - Here's Why
Have you ever dreamed of booking a one-way ticket abroad and never looking back? The thought of an indefinite adventure may seem thrilling, but in reality you're likely to run into trouble. Aside from the possibility of running out of funds or ending up stranded without a place to stay, you might not even get past the gate without a return flight. Certain countries won't grant entrance to travelers without proof of return or onward travel to control illegal immigration.
Many airlines serve as the first line of defense for this policy and will not even allow you on board without return-ticket confirmation. A traveler who makes this mistake is either forced to cancel their trip before it's even started or to purchase a return flight on the spot. The positive side is that you don't necessarily have to buy a ticket home if your plan is to hop from country to country. You should be fine as long as you can provide proof that you won't be overstaying your welcome. Each country also has its own travel requirements, so be sure to do your research beforehand.
This protocol may not be enforced every time you travel, but do yourself a favor and always have a backup plan. It's also recommended to have your hotel confirmations and transportation information on hand to avoid any trouble.
Here are countries that will deny you entry without proof that you won't be staying forever:
- Peru
- United Kingdom
- United States
- Philippines
- Indonesia
- Brazil
Although other countries don't necessarily state proof of onward travel in their immigration laws, many enforce this protocol anyway. A good rule of thumb is to just assume that you'll always need a return ticket.

Everything You Need to Know About How to Fly With Your Pet Safely
The shocking death of a dog on a United Airlines flight, coupled with other unfortunate pet mix-ups, is enough to make anyone terrified to fly with their pets. But in some cases, it might be your only option. I never expected to bring my cat on an airplane, but when I found myself moving across the country, she had to come along for the ride.
However, a quick Google search about flying with your cat or dog exposes horror stories of animals that were injured or even found dead after a flight.
According to Department of Transportation data, a total of 506,994 animals were transported by plane in 2017. Twenty-four deaths, 15 injuries, and one loss were reported. United Airlines had the most incidences of death and injury across airlines that year.
While even one loss is devastating, a look at these numbers shows that the vast majority of pets do arrive safely. Those figures break down to just .79 incidents per every 10,000 animals transported. But even if these events don't occur often, it's enough to leave concerned pet parents wondering if it's worth taking the risk . . . especially if airlines aren't taking necessary safety precautions.
I spoke to Erin Ballinger, a pet-travel expert and editor at BringFido.com, to get some insight on flying with pets.
"I do believe that it's a safe mode of transportation for your pet," Ballinger said. "Despite all the recent incidents, airlines do have standards that they have to meet in the care and transport of animals."
12 Tips For Flying With Pets
What dangers do pets face while flying?
Most of the issues seem to occur when pets travel in the cargo area of the plane, where they are susceptible to factors like extreme temperatures, low air pressure, and turbulence. Air travel is also unpredictable. Something like a long delay on a very hot day could potentially create an unsafe situation. Only service animals or smaller pets that fit under the seat can fly with you in the cabin, which is typically safer and allows you to keep a closer eye on them.
In light of recent events, PETA argues that all airlines should ban the transport of animals in the cargo, since airlines can't guarantee a safe and stress-free trip for animals. The organization urges owners who can't fly with their animals in the cabin to drive or find someone to care for their pets while they travel.
How can I ensure my pet's safety?
There's a lot to consider when deciding if it's safe to take your pet on a plane - it's not a simple yes-or-no answer. If you do decide to fly with your pets, there are key steps you can take to make it a safer experience.
- You should always schedule an appointment with your vet before you fly. Animals that aren't in good health may be at a greater risk and may be refused by the airline. Your vet can provide a health certificate indicating that they provided the OK to fly, which may be required for certain airlines and destinations.
- You may assume that medication is a safe way to keep your pet calm. However, this isn't necessarily the case. "You may want to take a Valium yourself during your flight," Ballinger said. "But it's not a good idea to give your pet a tranquilizer because you're nervous." Sedatives can affect breathing and ability to balance in both cats and dogs; therefore, you should only use them if it's medically necessary and prescribed by your vet.
- Take the time to fully understand your airline's regulations - policies and procedures differ on each carrier. Speak to an employee to get the details about where you drop off and pick up your pet and what to expect each step of the way. Find out who you can contact with questions and in case of an emergency.
- Book direct flights when possible to shorten your pet's travel time and to reduce the potential for long delays and mix-ups while waiting for a layover. Also, plan to fly in the morning or evening during the Summer or midday during the Winter to avoid extreme temperatures.
- Purchase a carrier or crate that is rated for safety and durability and has proper ventilation. It must be large enough for the animal inside to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. The airline can refuse transport if your pet doesn't fit properly.
How can I prepare to fly with my pet?
According to Ballinger, not being prepared is the biggest mistake people make when traveling with a pet. To help avoid these pitfalls, she shared some additional things you can do ahead of time to anticipate your pet's needs.
- Buy a carrier early and give your pet time to adjust to it in your home. Many animals associate their carrier with stressful experiences, like the vet, which means they may be even more anxious while traveling.
- Put a worn t-shirt or scarf in the carrier so your pet can be comforted by your scent.
- When sending your pet in the cargo, leave dishes in the carrier so an employee can provide fresh food and water in the event of a delay.
- Give dogs in particular lots of activity the day before their trip so that they're more likely to rest and fall asleep on the flight.
Is anything being done to make pet travel safer?
United is temporarily suspending new reservations for pets traveling in the cargo until it can consult with pet-safety experts. It also plans to use a brightly colored bag tag to identify pets brought on as carry-ons.
New tech innovations and airline service offerings may further reduce risks and give pet owners additional options in the future.
Information technology company Unisys recently launched DigiPet, a tracking system that allows customers to more closely monitor their pets while in the cargo. Using an app and sensors on the crate, it measures location, oxygen level, temperature, and light, and it sends an alert to the pet owner and airline if there are issues. Eventually, it plans to roll out features that allow you to see and talk to your pet through voice and video tools.
Some smaller airline companies, like PetAirways, offer pet-specific flights that allow animals to fly in the cabin rather than the cargo, and other services are becoming available for people to fly privately with their pets to avoid the stress of the airport.
Luckily, my cat is small and could stay with me during the flight. While she handled it well, it was nerve-racking seeing her stressed during takeoff and turbulence, and I can only imagine how nervous I would have felt if she wasn't with me but was instead in the cargo.
You can't control exactly what will happen on a flight or how your pet will react to it. But if you're prepared and do your homework, you can take steps to make it a safer and less stressful experience.
The Real Reason Camilla Parker Bowles Doesn't Use the Princess of Wales Title - Even Though She Can
When Camilla Parker Bowles wed Prince Charles in 2005, she gained two stepsons, Prince William and Prince Harry, a very powerful new mother-in-law in Queen Elizabeth II, and a few shiny new royal titles.
Upon her wedding day, Camilla was officially given an HRH and earned the title Duchess of Cornwall. While she is legally also the Princess of Wales, she has never formally used the distinction out of respect for its previous holder, Princess Diana. When Charles and Diana officially divorced in 1996, Diana was stripped of her HRH distinction and became known as Diana, Princess of Wales, and the title is so strongly associated with her that Camilla instead chose to take the feminine form of her husband's title as Duke of Cornwall (which also belonged to Diana during her marriage).
Charles and Camilla famously carried on an affair throughout his marriage to Princess Diana, which Camilla has since called "a deeply unpleasant time." She was front and center at Charles and Diana's wedding in 1981 and was even confronted by Diana about her relationship with Charles during a party years later.
When Charles accedes to the throne, Camilla will be known as HRH the Princess Consort, possibly ending decades-long drama over her royal distinction. Do you think Camilla is right for not using the Princess of Wales title?
Martin Henderson Adds Some Behind-the-Scenes Context to the Grey's Anatomy Drama
It's only been a handful of days since we first learned a game-changing piece of news about Grey's Anatomy: Sarah Drew and Jessica Capshaw are leaving. Suffice it to say, the reason it's been so hard to grasp the news is that it literally came out of nowhere. Even the statements from the actresses made it seem like the news came as a surprise to them, too. We couldn't help but puzzle over why Capshaw is leaving and why Drew is on the outs, as well.
As the days have gone on, we've gotten even more insight into the situation, but all of the information is subtle at best and requires quite a bit of filling in the blanks. Take, for instance, Capshaw's subtle Twitter shade, in which she seems to very lightly suggest that there are plenty of ways to continue Arizona's story without writing her off the show. And speaking of subtle shade, there's also this interesting recent interview with Grey's alum Martin Henderson.
While promoting his new film Strangers 2: Prey at Night, Henderson shared his own reaction to the news that Drew and Capshaw were set to leave the show. "I don't think anybody [saw it coming]," he said. He then called attention to the fact that April and Arizona are "such long-standing, well-loved" characters, saying, "This year particularly was a year that Shonda [Rhimes] was consciously shaking things up in terms of setting a new tone of the show, and really looking toward the future, and I think that was evident in bringing on [new showrunner] Krista Vernoff."
While these quotes don't ring any alarm bells, Henderson did shed some light on the whole "creative" aspect of this decision. Vernoff, after all, said the writers had to follow the creative path of the show and that path did not include April and Arizona. Ellen Pompeo said the same thing, in so many words, in her recent interview with Ellen DeGeneres.
"I don't know if you've noticed, but certainly we did with this season: there was a bit of a change in tone and a shift - bringing in a bunch of young interns and all that - and I think there was a sense of just wanting to revamp the show," Henderson said. "They remain committed to keeping the show as relevant as possible, and so obviously they're just making some really big changes to try to make sure the show lasts for as many years as possible."
In this context, the decision almost seems less creative and more like a business move. They just want the show to stay "fresh," so they're eliminating some long-standing characters. And it's his last quote that adds the most color to this particular aspect of the story. When Henderson left, he said, there wasn't really much fanfare surrounding his departure. "Grey's is a machine," he said. "That thing just rolls on." And roll on it does. We may not be able to do anything about these heartbreaking exits, but at least we can hope April and Arizona get the goodbyes they deserve.
How the Roseanne Reboot Honors the Late Glenn Quinn: "It's Not Something We Gloss Over"
The Roseanne revival on ABC is welcoming all of the original cast members back - they even found a funny way to incorporate Sarah Chalke, who replaced Lecy Goranson as Becky Conner for seasons six, seven, and nine. But one face from the original run that won't be in the reboot is actor Glenn Quinn, who played Becky's boyfriend-turned-husband Mark and who died in 2002 at the age of 32.
In season 10, the producers chose to have Becky's onscreen husband be deceased as well. I asked the writers if, out of respect for the actor, that was the only choice or if there was some discussion as to how to address Mark's absence.
"From the writing standpoint . . . when you have a show that's so naturalistic, we had to deal with that and that Becky was going to be single," said executive producer Bruce Helford. "We all had great affection for Glenn. We really wanted to say something. He comes up a couple times. It isn't just [the premiere episode]. He comes up a couple times in the course of the nine episodes."
Roseanne Barr added, "We all missed Glenn so much, because he was just a great part of the show, and it's not something we wanted to just gloss over."
"It allowed us to pay tribute to him in the show," said Sara Gilbert.
Having Quinn's character be deceased isn't the only tribute. Darlene and David, who was Mark's brother, have two children together, and the younger of the two is named Mark after his late uncle. Roseanne returns with its nine-episode run on March 27 on ABC, although the cast and creators all say they hope to get picked up for more seasons.
Mark's Death Will Be Addressed a "Couple of Times" in the Roseanne Reboot
Roseanne is returning to ABC on March 27 after being off the air for over two decades - and the writers had quite a task in reconciling the show's controversial ninth season with what the series looks like in the present day. The writers also had the unfortunate responsibility of figuring out what to do about Mark Healy, Becky's boyfriend-turned-husband from the original series, because actor Glenn Quinn sadly passed away in 2002 from an accidental drug overdose at the age of 32.
In the original Roseanne, Mark was actually in two different positions, depending on whether you were referring to "real life" or what Roseanne had supposedly been writing all of those years.
The nine seasons' worth of episodes are revealed in the two-part series finale to actually be Roseanne's writing. So Roseanne tells the audience via voiceover that Mark is actually married to Darlene, but she "writes" him as being with Becky because she always thought they were a better couple (and same goes for David and Darlene; David is actually with Becky, but Roseanne writes him with Darlene).
Confused? Yeah, so was the audience at home.
It is also revealed in the series finale that Becky and Mark are expecting, but since that "reveal" is part of Roseanne's creation, it would also appear to be untrue. However, the reboot is basically ignoring the entire final season of the original show. When the show returns, David and Darlene have always been together (though they are now separated) and Becky was always with Mark - that is, until he died.
The writers told me at the 2018 TCA Winter press tour that in light of what happened to Quinn, they couldn't see any other choice than having Mark be deceased in the revival.
"We all missed Glenn so much, because he was just a great part of the show, and it's not something we wanted to just gloss over," added star and creator Roseanne Barr.
"It allowed us to pay tribute to him in the show," said Sara Gilbert, who reprises the role of Darlene in the revival.
What exactly happened to Mark, however, has not been revealed yet. All we know is that Becky is single when the show picks up and she doesn't have any children (so their baby from the being-ignored ninth season is not part of the show). But based on the producers' comments, the show will give Mark's death its proper screen time at some point in the nine-episode first season.
Prepare to Fall Head Over Heels For the Love, Simon Soundtrack
Love, Simon hits theaters on March 16, but we're already amped on the new, gay coming-of-age story. Love, Simon has the ingredients to be an incredible film: a lovely cast featuring Jennifer Garner, Josh Duhamel, Nick Robinson, and 13 Reasons Why's Katherine Langford; it's based on an acclaimed young adult novel; it boasts a truly wholesome mystery; and it marks an important moment in LGBTQ+ representation.
But that's not all: it also has a wicked soundtrack! Curated by Jack Antonoff, it's busting with new, upbeat bops that are balanced with a few surprising classics. Check out the first all-new track, "Alfie's Song (Not So Typical Love Song)" by Bleachers, then the handful of songs that have previously been released. Don't worry - we've also included a full tracklist at the end. Oh, and don't forget to preorder the soundtrack before it drops on March 16 (which is also the film's release date)!
Breaking News: SO Many More Models Are About to Be Wearing Louis Vuitton
He is already a world-renowned DJ, creative director to Kanye West, and designer and founder of his own brand, Off-White, but Virgil Abloh is adding another job to his ever-growing résumé. Louis Vuitton just announced that the celeb-beloved designer will become the French luxury house's new artistic director of menswear. Virgil will be the brand's first black artistic director and will succeed designer Kim Jones, who left the brand earlier this year to become creative director of Dior Homme.
Virgil made a name for himself in the industry after making streetwear not only high fashion but also red carpet appropriate. The designer is also known for releasing several megahyped collaborations with brands such as Jimmy Choo, Ikea, Nike, and Levi's. So we can only assume he will continue to create killer collabs once he assumes his new role - especially following the success of Louis Vuitton's capsule collection with streetwear label Supreme.
As Kanye's longtime creative director, Virgil first found a fan base with the Kardashian-Jenner clan, and once he launched Off-White in 2013, his celeb following really took off. Bella Hadid, Camila Cabello, Hailey Baldwin, and Nicole Kidman have all rocked his designs on and off the red carpet. But now that he will be designing menswear, we can't wait to see which male celebs will join his legion of fans. While we will have to wait until June to see what he has in store for his first Louis Vuitton collection, read through to take a look back at how some of our favorite stars wore Virgil's best creations.

OK, Meghan, we get it. You have really GREAT taste in bags, but do you know what that does to us? Even though most of them are relatively affordable and absurdly functional (we love you for that, BTW), we can't help trying to collect them all - and that's dangerous.
Friends, we've already done heavy research on Meghan's navy Altuzarra purse, and don't get us started on her Strathberry picks. Both the crossbody shape and top-handle tote are luxurious enough to scoop up. But oh hello, you cute little Charlotte Elizabeth Bloomsbury bag ($247)! You can preorder this baby now from the British brand's site - fully stocked with creations made from locally sourced leather and stitched in Great Britain.
Meghan's pick, a neutral design with an elongated silhouette and gold hardware, worked wonders with her complete outfit on a visit to Belfast, Northern Ireland, with Prince Harry. But we can also imagine it meshing seamlessly into her royal wardrobe, and, well, ours too. Read on to zoom in on the accessory in question, then find a bag with your name on it.
I'm Obsessed With These Comfy $13 Flats From H&M -They Always Get Me Compliments
Almost every time I wear my favorite flats, a friend or coworker asks, "Those shoes are so cute - which designer makes them?" I can't help but chuckle because they are actually the bargain of the century. These H&M Ballet Flats ($13) are my go-tos on a daily basis. I have them in both this neutral shade and black.
The faux leather that these shoes are made with is a good, thick material that's easy to clean. I keep them fresh by wiping them with water and a paper towel on the regular. They are ridiculously comfortable and have never once given me blisters - I can wear them morning till night. I also love how versatile the design is; these flats look good with jeans, trousers, dresses, and skirts.
If you're in the market for some classic flats, I suggest getting this affordable pair. You'll love them so much, you'll just keep buying them.

No Wonder Mark Consuelos Called Kelly Ripa "Sexy" in This String Bikini - Look at Her!
In case you missed it, Kelly Ripa's got some insanely sculpted abs, and she definitely knows how to pick the perfect bikini to show off her bangin' body. When she and husband Mark Consuelos embarked on a beachy getaway with friends, the two lovebirds documented a few snippets of their vacation on Instagram, including one of Kelly's sexiest bikinigrams yet.
Mark shared an envy-inducing snap of his wife wading through crystal-clear beach waters and captioned it, "Sultry Sundays with the sexy one are my fave..." Meanwhile, Kelly posted a shirtless photo of Mark on her story and captioned it, "#daddy." Well, damn! It looks like these two still have the hots for each other after 21 years of marriage.
In Mark's 'gram, Kelly wore a teeny-tiny neutral-toned bikini that immediately captured our attention. The string two-piece featured a pattern that almost made it look textured, and she paired it with a large sun hat, brown-rimmed sunglasses, and a pendant necklace. Grace Kelly's Granddaughter Wore Her Blindingly Beautiful Engagement Ring to a Fancy Ball
You likely first associated Charlotte Casiraghi's name with the fashion world - she is Karl Lagerfeld's muse after all and has appeared in magazines like Vogue Paris. But Charlotte also harbors another interesting tidbit about her life: she's ninth in line to the throne of Monaco (her parents are Princess Caroline of Hanover and Stefano Casiraghi!), and this princess just got engaged.
Charlotte received a gorgeous engagement ring from Dimitri Rassam during a family ski vacation, and the duo made an appearance together postengagement at the 2018 Rose Ball. Dimitri looked dapper in his black suit, while Charlotte wore a lavish feathered black and white dress. Both their ensembles were from Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello. Charlotte wore no other jewelry, possibly to let her enormous ring shine, and looked like a true royal.
Being the granddaughter of Grace Kelly, you can expect this princess to throw a beautiful wedding in July, which is when she'll say her "I dos," dressed to the nines of course. Until that day comes, click through to see Charlotte's Saint Laurent number and a close-up of her diamond, which is set in a gold band. Then peruse similar styles to give your SO that little nudge.

We Can't Even Believe This Denim Trend Is Back
Trends always come back again, and in the denim department, one particularly vibrant movement is alive and thriving once more: colored denim. That's right, a spectrum of happy hues and pale pastels are at the forefront of Spring - a nostalgic craze we truly hadn't anticipated returning with such vigor. As these things go, modern renditions prove refreshingly chic, done in a range of fits from voluminous flares to roomy straight legs and ankle-length skinnies (a memorable version we know you dabbled in way back when).
For forward effect, style with of-the-moment pieces like cowboy boots, optic white shoes, or a reworked button-down. If you're feeling emboldened, go monochrome by rocking a single hue head to toe (Danish It girls love this look). Keep an eye out for fresh details, too - raw hems, ultrahigh waists, and '90s-style distressing make for total cool.
