This Beauty Influencer's Hack For Making Lip Gloss Last Longer Is Totally Brilliant
You know the mini mourning period you go through after finishing a good book or Netflix show? You probably face a similar sadness upon reaching the bottom of your lip gloss tube. What's even more aggravating about the experience is that there's often more product lurking at the bottom - it's just impossible to reach. Luckily, beauty influencer Tiara Willis (aka MakeupforWOC) shared a hack for getting the most out of your beauty tubes - and all you need is a pair of tweezers.
In a thread titled "How to Save Money on Makeup," Willis shared many thrifty tidbits, but one specific hack is going viral, probably because it's so damn genius. To elongate the life of her liquid concealers and glosses, Willis pulls out the stopper using her trusty extraction device. This provides more room to scoop up your product, which means you get to use more of it. Three cheers for conservation!

- Makeup For WOC (@MakeupForWOC) March 29, 2018
Willis mentioned that L.A. Girl's bestselling Pro Concealer ($4) and Nars's beloved Radiant Creamy Concealer ($30) are some of her usual suspects for tube hacking. As you can see in the photo above, she also performs this trick on Almay Color + Care Liquid Lip Balm ($6).
Whatever product you decide to operate on, may all roads end in longer-lasting makeup and fuller wallets!

The Dry Shampoo Method I Use to Wash My Hair Way Less Often
Washing my thick hair takes forever and is one of my least favorite chores. I've tried every dry shampoo, clarifying shampoo, and technique under the sun to try to extend my time between washes, and I've finally got my routine down. It works so well that several of my coworkers have been shocked when I revealed I hadn't washed my locks in four or five days.
The most important discovery is that I've finally found a dry shampoo that really absorbs all of the dirt and oil from my head. After reading several recommendations of the DryBar Detox Dry Shampoo ($23) on the Sephora Beauty Insider Community, I quickly switched over to this spray and will never go back.
Keep reading to find out how I successfully put off washing my hair to once or twice a week - without it looking like a greasy mess.

Is Mascara Bad For Your Eyelashes? We Demand the Truth
This is definitely one of those stories that you're probably unsure if you want to read. Mascara is, after all, a makeup staple that many of us feel incomplete without. Chances are someone reading this has double backed home for a few swipes after leaving without it. So the possibility that it's bad for your lashes may be one that you're okay with not knowing - but hear us out. Yes, the internet is filled with scary rumors about the potential dangers of mascara, but two experts weighed in on the question, and it's actually not as bad as you night think.
Find the Right Formula
The stuff inside most mascaras are pretty basic: waxes, pigment and iron oxides - nothing that's going to be too damaging to these fragile hairs. While ingredients are important (more on that later), it's the type of formula and how gentle you are when applying and removing it that can impact your lash hairs.
"Waterproof mascara tends to damage lashes and the eye area more since it's harder to remove and involves lot of rubbing," said Piret Aava aka The Eyebrow Doctor, and guru of pretty much all things eye area. She adds that there are formulas that offer the run-resistant effects of waterproof versions, but that are a lot easier to remove and ultimately less harsh on your lashes. "I prefer mascaras that develop a tube-like coating around each lash like Kevin Aucoin The Curling Mascara ($28). It's still water and smudge proof but comes off with warm water and without having to rub your eyes," noted Aava.
Keep an Eye on Ingredients
The negative effects of mascara can be somewhat two-fold. On one hand, there's the potential harm that it can cause to the skin around your eyes, and then there's how the actual formula impacts the actual lash hairs. Beauty expert and CEO of the Long Island Nail Skin and Hair Institute, Dana Persico, said that as with many makeup products, there are some ingredients found in mascara that can cause different types of allergies, inflammation, and even eczema.
"Retinal acetate is an ingredient that has been banned in Canada and prohibited in the use of any cosmetic products, and studies have linked it to changes in the make up and composition of cells [when absorbed into your body]," said Persico. Other additives like parabens, sulfates, and phthalate can also irritate the already sensitive skin around your lashes - so read labels carefully and of course stop using if you experience any side effects.
Don't Get Dry
Once you've settled on an option that you know won't bother your eye area, be diligent about not letting your lash hairs dry out. This can happen one of two ways: as mentioned earlier, waterproof formulas are a bit harsher, since the basic chemistry behind them is to resist moisture. So prolonged used of these types can actually suck moisture from your lashes.
The other culprit, no matter what the formula, is not removing your mascara before bed. Letting it sit on your eyes overnight can cause the actual mascara to become stiff. As it cracks and sheds your lashes will go right along with it. Think of it like the hairs on your head, when each strand become brittle it's prone to breakage. So no matter what state of sleepy you're in at bedtime, take a moment to clean your eyes.
Take Care of the Hairs
There are plenty of mascaras with conditioning ingredients already built in, like Josie Maran's Argan Black Oil Mascara ($22). But if you need something a little extra, try swiping castor oil or Vitamin E on each night using a clean spoolie brush. If you're a waterproof devotee, switch formulas for a bit to give your lashes a break. And for removal, swap in a cleanser that's oil based like L'Oréal Paris Micellar Cleansing Water Complete Cleanser ($8). It'll remove even the tough stuff with less friction and condition at the same time.
The Teflon Talk
There's been recent talk of Teflon being used in makeup, including mascara, to help make it more waterproof. And yes, we're talking about the same Teflon that's used on non-stick pots and pans - but Persico said that it's nothing new and isn't significant enough to cause any harm.
"Teflon has been in cosmetics and even nail polish for as many years as I have been doing research and development and product launches in the beauty industry. Don't stress! The trace amount of Teflon found in cosmetics will not cause overexposure and or any significant penetration of the layers of skin," Persico concluded.

I Found the Best Beauty Product I've Used in My 25 Years of Life - and You Can't Even Tell I'm Wearing It
I'm going to shoot straight with you: I'm pretty much a sucker for any seemingly off-the-wall beauty product. So when I saw that Milk Makeup released a green Matcha Toner ($26), I knew I had to have it. And by have it, I mean beg POPSUGAR's Beauty editorial assistant, Alaina Demopoulos, to call one in for me. And as soon as that little green stick of vegan bliss landed on my desk, my life was forever changed for the better.
What drew me to this product at first? Well, that's easy. It's a green stick that's supposed to go on your f*cking face. And like any loyal Shrek enthusiast, I decided to give it a whirl. Oh, and full disclosure: before I actually tried it out, I thought it was actually going to roll on green in some capacity because I am a certified asshat. And while the revelation that the toner does not in fact leave a green residue felt like a punch to the gut at first, I got over it as soon as I saw my skin start to clear up within a few days.
And let me tell you how big of a deal that is. On a good day, my combination skin is acne prone if I switch up my routine in the slightest. Forget to take off my makeup after one night of going out? Chin zit. Try the new moisturizer everybody's raving about? Double chin zit. I fall into that category where washing my face totally dries out my skin, but applying rich moisturizer afterward makes me break out. Insert sarcastic "yay."
"I'd be lying if I said it wasn't gentle. Even my fiancé says my face is as soft as a baby's bottom, and trust me, that's a first."
To make matters worse? The weather has been absolute sh*t in New Jersey, and that means big trouble for my face. On April 4 alone, there was supposed to be a low of 32 and a high of 60. That's a 28-degree difference in one day. That is both absurd and cruel. Throw in a few snowstorms mixed with a sun that can't make up its mind and you have a recipe for disaster - unless, that is, you have the power of the Matcha Toner.
Given the name of this product, it's also important to note that I am not one of those people who's obsessed with everything kombucha-related. I have not poured kombucha down my gullet, nor do I plan on doing so in the future. I see people on the streets of NYC shelling out $8 for a bottle and drinking it by the gallon. I understand it's good for you; it's just simply not my cup of tea. I'll stick with my hot water with lemon and go about my business.
But when it comes to applying kombucha to your face, I'll admit my tune completely changes. Milk's toner is made from a combination of witch hazel, matcha green tea leaves, and kombucha, and I'd be lying if I said it wasn't gentle. Even my fiancé says my face is as soft as a baby's bottom, and trust me, that's a first. Another plus? There's no sulfate it in, which is apparently a good thing, because according to Jonathan from Queer Eye, whom I would trust with my life, it's too harsh for your hair, let alone your face.
So, as far as the application goes? It's pretty easy. After showering and washing my face, I roll it all over my visage and then crawl into bed with my cats. I also apply it before I put my makeup on, including primer, and it leaves my skin feeling silky-smooth all day. The Matcha Toner has also allowed me to cut back on moisturizing my face as frequently because my skin is far less dry after standing under a scalding-hot shower for 20 minutes, and that's a major win.
Long story short: should you buy this product? Yes. It will totally transform your skin for the better and, well, it's green. Your makeup counter probably needs a pop of color anyway, right?
Drugstore Beauty Queen Cardi B Loves This $5 Lip Balm
One of the many, many reasons we love Cardi B is that the woman who enjoys making money moves also understands the ubiquitous delight of a good drugstore beauty product. Take, for instance, her favorite foundation, which costs a cool $10. Or her go-to concealer, a little L.A. Girl number that costs less than some lattes.
Turns out, we can add lip balm to the list of Cardi's affordable skincare staples. The "Bartier Cardi" singer uses Eos Crystal Lip Balm ($5) - or, at least, she does in the music video to her latest single. Want proof? Watch the video above. Right around 1:22, you can see Cardi applying the see-through swiper in the backseat of a Lyft. I literally did the exact same thing this morning!
Eos gave its iconic balm a dramatic upgrade just last year when it switched out its opaque, spherical shape for a sleeker, rounder crystal one. This salve is vegan, hypoallergenic, and free of wax, so it hydrates the heck out of your mouth with a natural blend of shea butter and coconut, avocado, castor, and sunflower oils. No wonder Cardi's into it.
This isn't the first time Eos has made an appearance in a music video. Back in 2013, Miley Cyrus twerked her way through the "We Can't Stop" music video, pausing to apply the brand's balm. Guess there's something about Eos that makes a hit song!
6 Foolproof Tips For Getting a Tattoo You Won't Regret Later
I waited until I was 26 to get my first tattoo, and I am so, so glad that I did. I'm not exactly a Kat Von D type. I'm not covered in tats from head to toe, but I have three custom tattoos that I absolutely love. While some people commit to tattoos easily, for most of us, the process is more difficult. We worry about whether our idea is something we'll still be connected to in 30 years, whether the artist will be able to pull off a design we'll love, and how the tattoo will wear over time.
That said, if you've always wanted to get a tattoo but want to make sure it's just right, I know how you feel. Here's my advice for getting a high-quality tattoo you'll love that will stand out from the crowd and complement your personal style.
1. Find the Right Artist
Finding a good tattoo artist is a lot harder than you'd think. In most major cities, leading tattoo artists often don't take new clients, or they have lengthy waiting lists. This is to be expected. One artist I absolutely loved and followed on Instagram for many years didn't even take client requests - she just put designs she wanted to do on her Instagram page, and people applied for them!
So to find the right artist, do your research. Don't rule out artists in smaller cities nearby. Scour the internet for tattoo studios in your region and look at every. single. page. Check out the artist's reviews and Instagram page and the studio's Facebook page. You want someone who is legit.
2. Decide What You Want
Ultimately, your tattoo is yours, so no one else's opinion really matters. But think long and hard about what you really want to put on your body. Some questions to ask yourself include: Does this match my personal aesthetic (not just today's style)? Is the subject of this tattoo something that means a lot to me? I recommend that people view tattoos as symbols of important times and places in their life. So, let's say you get a tattoo in honor of your home city . . . even if you don't live there in 30 years, your tattoo will be a reminder of an exciting time/place in your life.
3. Set Aside an Appropriate Budget
The cost of tattoos vary widely, but most respected artists run from about $150 per hour to $400. This can be lower or higher, depending on the artist's desirability and your metropolitan area. Tattoos also vary widely in the amount of time they take. Talk with your artist ahead of time about how much he or she thinks your design will cost.
4. Prepare Your References
Another part of your discussion with your artist will include laying out your ideas for your design. References (photos you show your artist, which showcase your style) are important, but remember: your artist is ultimately the one designing the tattoo. They have to create original work, so don't expect them to copy another artist's design.
5. Voice Your Concerns
Some tattoo artists can be a little bit bothered by lots of questions. Some don't even want to let you in on the design process until the day of your tattoo. They may be great artists, but I personally decline to work with these kinds of people. There are plenty of artists out there who are more than happy to collaborate with you on your design. It's harder to find those people, but seek them out - you want to be able to express your desires and concerns and not feel like you're bothering your artist by doing so.
6. Expect It to Turn Out a Little Differently Than You Imagined
Especially if this is your first tattoo, be prepared that there's a good chance it won't look 100 percent the way you imagined it. Ink on the skin tends to do that. But the good news is, if you're really committed to the idea of having art on your skin, you're probably going to love it anyway. Once something is etched into your body, it becomes a part of you.
20 Fab and Feminine Bob Haircuts With Bangs
Committing to a bob with bangs is a beauty decision that you shouldn't take lightly. It is, after all, a look - one that you kind of have to be ready to rock for a few months, depending on how fast or slow your hair grows out. The good thing, as you'll see from these celebrity looks, is that there are tons ways to style it. So if you're considering the Anna Wintour special or looking for a way to freshen up your own version of this cut, here's some inspo to get your styling juices flowing.
Why the Newest (and Grossest) Beauty Trend Is Total Bullsh*t
Let's just go ahead and insert all the poop emojis right now, because we're totally going there. Yep, we're talking about colonics and - specifically - how they may or may not affect your overall skin health. And if you're thinking, "How in the world does that part of my body have anything to do with the rest of me?" then we're all on the same page heading into this.
Over recent years, we've seen an uptick in the number of people voluntarily getting a colonic as a way to "detox" the body. We'll go more into those claims shortly (and also discuss if they hold up), but first let's discuss what a colonic is.
These 10 Makeup Items Will Help Your Perfect Natural-Looking Makeup
As much as we beauty junkies love a strong lip, bold cat eye, and carefully chiseled contour, there's something refreshing about ditching our usual full-coverage foundation for a lighter, no-makeup makeup look. Not only is going a little less bold less of a time commitment, but it's also a refreshing way to get out of a makeup rut.
The keys to perfecting this low-maintenance look are choosing sheer formulas, fresh colors, and making sure your skin looks dewy. When done correctly, you'll look perfectly put together and naturally gorgeous. Thanks to the Sephora Beauty Insider Community, I've found products that help me to perfect my lighter makeup routine, along with some of my own tried-and-true favorites.
Read on to discover the 10 items to add to your makeup bag to get natural-looking, flawless makeup easily.
Here's the Difference Between Retinol-Induced Skin Purging and a Breakout
Anyone who's ever been prescribed a topical treatment for a skincare concern has probably heard their derm utter the following cliche: "This will make things worse before it gets better." One common culprit is retinol, an ingredient that's beloved by many for its ability to treat everything from fine lines and wrinkles to acne, along with improving skin's elasticity, stimulating collagen production, and smoothing out uneven texture.
I'm currently testing a new serum, Algenist Elevate Advanced Retinol Serum ($98), which I love more than most of the people in my life. But before completely eliminating my stubborn acne and pesky hyperpigmentation, this stuff reeked havoc on my complexion.
Turns out, "getting worse before it gets better" has an actual name: purging. And the title is apt - after seeing a uniform pack of pimples pop up on the left side of my face, I was so out for blood that I could have starred in The Purge 37, or whatever sequel number that horror film franchise is on by now. I reached out to Dr. Joshua Zeichner, Director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research for NYC's Mount Sinai Hospital, for everything I needed to know about this process.
First, a little science lesson for you: "Purging is the skin clearing blockages from the pores in a rapid manner," Dr. Zeichner told me. "This usually occurs in the setting of using topical retinoids, which enhance cell turnover and help open blockages within the pores."
"The breakouts should look similar to each other, as they tend to develop at the same time"
It can take anywhere from days to weeks, a time frame that depends on how much oil or gunk is clogging your follicles to begin with. Zeichner says if you have a fairly clear complexion and are using retinol to treat wrinkles rather than acne, "purging may be so minor that you do not notice it at all." Translation: a retinol won't create a pimple that wasn't already budding underneath your skin.
So what makes purging different than just a normal breakout, or perhaps a bad reaction to your retinol of choice? A purge is just a rapid breakout that can occur all over the face. (But not always - mine was confined to the left side, as that has always been a problem area for me).
The key to self-diagnosing purging is making sure that your pimples are all uniform. "The breakouts should look similar to each other, as they tend to develop at the same time," Dr. Zeichner said. "In the case of regular acne, breakouts occur at different times and individual pimples are usually in different stages." My purge took form as multiple whiteheads that literally sprouted overnight - such a pleasant surprise to wake up to!
So why keep slathering a retinol on your face? "Once you clear the pipes, if you continue to use the retinol, you can keep them clean and prevent them from getting clogged again." To quote Robert Frost (and also my dad during a particularly gruesome fourth-grade soccer game), "The only way out is through." Luckily, if you continue using your product, it should not happen more than once. However, sometimes extreme aggravating factors like stress or hormonal change like switching birth control cause a rapid increase in oil buildup.
And if you're going through a purge, just remember this: there's nothing wrong with proudly rocking your acne.

Jenna Dewan's Wedding Rings Are Gorgeous Enough to Wear For a Lifetime
After Jenna Dewan and Channing Tatum announced their split, the world basically fell apart, if for a few hours. While people were devastated about the news, the duo seemed to have split amicably, and Jenna was also spotted on the same day wearing her diamond wedding band in Studio City, CA. While Jenna was only wearing one ring (and we don't know that she'll keep it), the star definitely had one of the most memorable sparklers.
Her square-cut stone with slightly rounded edges sat on a fancy band, and Jenna played around with her stack from time to time, often slipping her engagement ring in between two thinner rings. In 2010, however, she did hit the red carpet modeling her gorgeous set in a different way, with both bands together at the bottom and her engagement ring on top. Ahead, you can zoom in on Jenna's gorgeous baubles and admire all the ways she's worn them.

With a Coat Like This, Ashley Olsen Didn’t Stand a Chance of Going Unnoticed in NYC
Like Victoria Beckham, the Olsen sisters often wear clothes from their own label, The Row. Ashley bundled up in an oversize wrap coat from the fashion line while taking a stroll with friends in NYC. Given the unpredictable weather on the East coast, it made sense for the designer to choose a coat that was not too thick or thin, providing just enough warmth and coverage on a crisp day.
Though we couldn't see the rest of Ashley's outfit, save for a pair of pants, her outerwear told us everything we needed to know. Ashley's a fashion girl through and through, and even looks like one wrapped up in a cocoon coat. For a final touch, the star chose a pair of sunglasses and a blue printed scarf. If you're looking for a wrap design like Ashley's, shop similar selections ahead. Then brush up on some Olsen-sister approved styling tips for wearing it.
Rose Gold Vans Exist, and We're Wondering Why We Don't Already Have Them
OK, so don't freak out, but rose gold high-top Vans exist, and you need to get your hands on them now. The 2-Tone Metallic Sk8-Hi Reissue ($70) are, like the name suggests, a reissued shoe in the legendary Vans high top silouhette. The "Mahogany Rose" footwear features pink suede details throughout, but it's the rose gold hue that has our undivided attention. The sneakers are currently out of stock on the Vans website (proving its popularity), but Zappos still offers a few sizes, as does PacSun. With everything from rose gold hair to rose gold sneakers trending, it's no wonder these shoes are flying off the shelves.
The Color of Kaia Gerber's Bikini Will Put You in a Blissful Trance
Kaia Gerber packed plenty of swimsuits for her family vacation in Miami. After rocking a Same Swim black bikini, the young model decided to go with a bolder swimsuit color: red. She hit the pool in a bandeau style top with matching red bottoms. You might recognize the two-piece because Kaia's worn it before. (That's right, she's not afraid to rewear bikinis - as one should!)
Right after Fashion month ended, Kaia had taken some some much-needed R&R and posted a photo of herself rocking the itty-bitty Mikoh bikini top. Similar to the first time she wore it, Kaia accessorized with two necklaces, including one that said her name. This time around, however, she skipped wearing the bucket hat. Although Kaia's red bikini top is sold out, you can shop similar colors and prints ahead.
Ryan Reynolds Can't Stop Staring at Blake Lively When She's Wearing This Sexy Dress
In case you were worried, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are still going strong. The adorable couple made an appearance on the red carpet to support their friends John Krasinski and Emily Blunt at the NYC premiere of A Quiet Place. Blake clearly stole the show in a gorgeous tweed and leather dress from Chanel.
From the looks of it, Ryan approved of Blake's ensemble, since his eyes were glued on his gorgeous wife the entire time. Blake's curve-hugging dress featured a leather bodice and a deep, plunging neckline. She styled her sexy dress with a stack of chunky bracelets, dangling earrings, and silver, strappy heels. Read on to take a closer look at Blake's outfit and buy similar versions of her dress ahead.

This Is the Next Big Earring Trend (and We Mean BIG)
We're all for a statement earring on the daily, whether it's dressing up denim or as a flashy finish to evening attire. Sleek, sculptural shapes and modern, natural forms have been the look du jour as of late, but per the Fall/Winter 2018 collections, a high-wattage update is upon us: rhinestone and crystal earrings. Imbued with '80s glamour (a common theme for the season), these bold earrings are more than a sparkly accent, they're utterly extreme, appearing in the form of gleaming crystal clusters, décolletage-skimming rhinestone fringe, glittering art deco shapes, and beyond. Wham, glam!
But why wait for Fall to start rocking the trend? We assembled 10 showstopping styles to start wearing now with everything from jeans and a t-shirt to tuxedo-style suits and dresses designed for after hours. Ahead, peruse versions from the runway, then shop our edit, with options starting at just $10. In this case, the more dramatic, the better.
A New Day, a New Slogan Sweatshirt From Selena Gomez - So What's It Say This Time?
Even when she is leaving a workout, Selena Gomez somehow manages to look poised and pulled together. The singer/actress was spotted leaving a Pilates studio in a sleek yet sporty monochromatic look. For the fitness class, Selena wore a white cropped tee by Cotton Citizen ($90), black Puma shorts ($20), and sneakers ($65). She completed the laid-back ensemble by draping a black hoodie over her shoulders that had "Friend of Sinners" emblazoned down the sleeves.
The $50 sweatshirt comes from Vous Church, which is run by celebrity pastor Rich Wilkerson, Jr., who famously officiated Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's wedding. Just in case her message wasn't clear from the slogan hoodie, Selena also made her spirituality known by carrying a Bible as she exited the class. 3 Unbelievably Easy Ways to Start Eating the Mediterranean Diet
The Mediterranean diet is without question one of the healthiest ways to eat; it's one of the best diets for weight loss, and it might help you live longer! But before you overhaul your entire diet, we have some quick tips to get you started. Maggie Moon, MS, RDN at Pom Wonderful, shared three of the simplest ways you can eat more Mediterranean - almost zero effort required.
Swap Rice and Quinoa For Farro
Have you tried farro yet? Moon refers to it as "10-minute farro." According to the dietitian, "It's a quick and easy gateway to this Italian whole grain. Like the name suggests, it cooks up in 10 minutes and can be tossed with chopped dates, pistachios, pomegranate arils, red onions, cooked chicken, and mint or parsley for a complete one-dish meal." YUM.
Stock Up on Grab-n-Go Mediterranean Snacks
Keep healthy Mediterranean foods on hand that are easy to grab, and you'll have one less thing to think about as you clean up your diet. Consider fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, and other whole, plant-based foods. "Stock your fridge and pantry with Mediterranean staples like pistachios and 100 percent pomegranate juice," says Moon. "They happen to make a simple, healthy, and great-tasting snack pairing that also boasts plant protein, healthy fats, and polyphenol antioxidants."
Cook With Olive Oil
While coconut oil remains a tad controversial, heart-healthy EVOO has been a healthy Mediterranean staple for centuries. "Make olive oil your main cooking oil," suggests Moon. "A favorite breakfast in Spain is pan con tomate, which you can approximate at home with good-quality whole-grain bread, ripe tomatoes, and olive oil seasoned with salt and pepper or your favorite herbs." Sounds like an ideal toast breakfast, honestly.
A 7-Day Wake-Up Program to Help Train You For Morning Workouts
Morning workouts aren't for everyone, but they can be life-changing once you make them part of your routine. If waking up in the mornings is already your biggest challenge, you may want to try easing into things to help you form a new habit. I've made the mistake of launching straight into early workouts, when in reality I shouldn't have expected to change overnight. Just like how developing any new skill requires discipline and practice, so does becoming a morning-workout person. By the end of this seven-day program, waking up early should be a little less painful for you. But remember: baby steps.
Monday
Set your alarm to just 15 minutes before your usual wake-up time. Not too bad, right? Instead of grabbing a cup of coffee, opt for a glass of water first thing to replenish your body and give you an instant boost. Next, try some stretches before starting to get ready for your day.
Tuesday
Set your alarm for 20 minutes earlier and try an energizing yoga sequence. You want the flow to be simple enough to ease into but effective enough to get your blood pumping.
Wednesday
Wake up 30 minutes earlier for a quick walk or jog around your neighborhood. To really get you pumped, listen to this hip-hop playlist that's timed perfectly to your half-hour head start.
Thursday
Rise 45 minutes earlier for a HIIT workout at home. Sweating along to a fun playlist will help prevent you from crawling back into bed.
Friday
You're ready to wake up a full hour earlier! Treat yourself to your favorite workout class if you can or opt for a neighborhood run followed by a celebratory coffee from your favorite cafe.
Saturday
I know it's Saturday, but you're almost there! Skip sleeping in this weekend to keep the momentum going, and set your alarm for an hour earlier again. Commit to a workout class you love - bonus points if you bring a workout buddy to hold each other accountable.
Sunday
It's your last day of wake-up practice and you've got this. Rise an hour and a half earlier for a sunrise hike or any other outdoor activity, and get ready to officially become a morning-workout person starting tomorrow.
If You Want to Lose Weight, This Is the Workout You Should Be Doing
A lot of women are turning to the weights to get into shape. It's a smart move. But for every woman picking up some dumbbells, there's an equal number who avoid them. Some think that weightlifting will make them bulky - which isn't true - and others don't think that pushing around some weight in the gym will help them lose a few pounds. But the truth? Strength training will definitely help you lose weight and is an integral part of how you can shape your body into the lean, fit machine you've always wanted! How does it work? What do you really have to do? What can you expect? Wow, you've got a lot of questions! Good thing we have all the answers!
More Muscle Is a Great Thing
Have you ever heard the phrase "the more muscle you have, the more fat you'll burn"? No? Well, trust us when we say it's definitely true. Let's look at the science: the body expends energy (calories) just to maintain muscle, and the more you have, the more energy your body needs to maintain it. What does that mean for you? Just having muscle burns calories, and having more muscle means burning even more calories. You may not think you'll be using a significant amount of energy and that you won't have a significant caloric loss just by building muscle, but it's enough to make a noticeable difference, as stated in many studies.
And if you think that you'll only be burning calories when you're actually using those new muscles, you're dead wrong. According to certified personal trainer Heather Neff, "You'll be burning fat while you sleep just for the fact that you have muscle to maintain." To put it simply, building muscles can help raise your resting metabolism.
Don't Trust the Scale
First off, you have to know one simple fact: strength training might actually make you gain weight. Let me explain before you freak out. Weight is a vague term typically used to describe how much a person actually weighs and frequently has little to do with your health or fitness levels.
According to Neff, "If you were to take five pounds of muscle and five pounds of fat, place them both in a bucket and compare the two side by side, the fat will take up a significant amount of room while the muscle takes up very little, yet they still weight the exact same. That's because fat cells are large, light, and fluffy, while muscle fibers are small and very dense."
So don't freak out when you step on the scale after a few weeks. Instead, revel in the glory of how well you fit in those new jeans!
How to Use Strength Training to Lose Weight
If you're trying to lose weight, then a good mix of cardio and strength training is the best plan. That's right, you can't just stop doing cardio - but at least you won't have to keep doing endless sessions on the treadmill. And if you double up, you should keep that cardio for after the weights. Why? "Strength training before cardio because cardio can deplete your body of energy and set you up for injury," Neff said. "Especially if you are going to be lifting heavier weights." If you can't see yourself doing strength training and cardio in the same workout, do your cardio on off days or in other venues (go for a walk, play a sport, or even take up LARP'ing - look it up! It's hilarious, geeky fun).
How often should you be strength training? Neff offers this advice: "Do your strength training three to four days per week and make sure you're not doing it back to back, especially if you're doing a full-body routine - always give yourself a day in between training for the muscles to recover and grow."
The Way You Sleep Says a Lot More About Your Personality Than You May Realize
When you're closing your eyes and hitting your pillow, you're probably not giving much thought about the position in which you actually fall asleep or stay asleep throughout the night. Of course, you're not awake to know whether you start on your side and end up on your belly or vice versa, and unless you sleep with a partner who likes reporting back on your nightly moves, you're probably clueless.
Think about it for a second, though. When you climb into bed to fall asleep in the first place or wake up in the middle of the night for whatever reason, are you always in the same position? Here's why you might want to pay more attention: your sleeping position can actually say a bit about who you are and what your personality is like.
"How we sleep reveals important facets about our personality, but it's not a cut and dry science, with considerable overlap of sleeping positions among various personalities," said Dr. Robert Glatter, MD, an assistant professor of emergency medicine at Northwell Health and attending emergency physician at Lenox Hill Hospital.
When you think about it, it makes sense. "Body language while asleep often reveals many things about our deep inner personalities, including our self-image and our fears, as well as our core beliefs and outward desire," Glatter said.
Based on Glatter's experience with patients, he tends to find these personality traits and sleeping patterns to match up across the board. "I find that more oftentimes than not, their sleeping positions are a good match to their personalities and general demeanor," he said.
"Most people don't change their sleeping positions throughout their lives. The position we choose to fall asleep in promotes stability and inner comfort and helps us to feel solid and secure as we end our day," he added. Keep reading for his insight on what your sleeping position says about you.
Fetal
"The fetal sleeping position is generally the most common sleeping position," he said. "Fetal sleepers sleep on their side, curled up with their knees tucked in," he explained.
People who sleep in this position might be more introverted or closed up in nature to protect themselves, Glatter said. "People who sleep in the fetal position are often quite sensitive and generally withdrawn or shy. They are often quite anxious and may get bogged down in details," he explained, and he said he often notices the connection when speaking to his patients. What's more, these fetal sleepers often worry excessively over minor details, he said, so they'll need some other ways to de-stress beyond shut-eye, like yoga, exercise, or meditation.
Log
"The log sleeper rests on the side with a straight body and limbs kept at the sides," Dr. Glatter said. Good news: these sleepers are generally more at ease, unlike those fetal-position sleepers.
"These sleepers are often relaxed and laid-back, but also can be quite gullible at times," he said, "based on research by Chris Idzikowski, director of the UK's Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service, whose work helps to support the belief that sleeping position appears to draw strong correlations about our personality traits during our waking hours."
If you're a log sleeper, you might want to keep in mind that it's good to be easy-going and less stressed in general, but don't be so quick to go with the flow at all times.
Yearner
"Yearner sleepers are basically side sleepers who stretch both arms out in front of themselves as if they are yearning or grasping for something," Dr. Glatter explained. You can think of this as a need or desire for something, and so reaching out to take hold is a natural tendency. Though, while yearners might weigh pros and cons for their desires and may act slower than others, they are confident in their choices once all is sorted out. "They often take a while to make a decision, but are steadfast once they have made up the their mind," he said.
Soldier
"Soldier sleepers typically lay on their backs with both arms close to their sides," he said. "In general, they are the strong yet silent type. They are more often than not reserved and don't like to make waves," he said.
However, they can also put the pressure on. "They can be quite exacting and demanding of themselves as well as others," he added.
Freefaller
"Freefallers lie on their tummies with their hands encircling their pillows, and they typically turn their head to one side," he said. However, it's not the healthiest position to sleep in, regardless of personality traits. "This mode of sleeping is typically quite uncomfortable due to the neck being rotated and extended," he explained.
"Freefallers yearn to be in control, but in truth feel that their life is often spinning out of control at times. And so they often awake with anxiety," he added, which has also been reported in his experience with patients. To help ease these troubles, try some calming music before bed or perhaps a lavender-scented eye mask to relax those nerves.
Starfish
"People who are starfish sleepers typically lie on their back with both arms encircling their pillow, as if they are in a sit-up position. In general, they are gregarious and very giving, and they are selfless, based on Idzikowski's research," Dr. Glatter said.
Just be warned that with that generous nature might come a few bouts of snores. (Any partners, watch out.) "In general, the starfish and soldier positions are more prone to snoring and poor sleep quality," he said, due to the discomfort and possible muscle tension come morning.
The Debilitating Anxiety Symptom No One Ever Talks About
Until only recently, I kept a big aspect of my anxiety hidden from the world because I was deathly afraid of the consequences I would suffer if I talked about it. I was already fearful of the judgment I may experience from opening up about my anxiety, but this was huge. What if people thought I was actually crazy? The anxiety of this backlash made me feel physically ill, and I felt like there was no one I could turn to who would understand.
I'm talking about intrusive thoughts, which the Anxiety and Stress Disorders Institute of Maryland say "become obsessive, provoke fear and shame, and often lead to doubts about sanity, control, motives, character and safety." It's common in those struggling with general anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorders, and obsessive compulsive disorder.
A majority of my life has been spent dealing with anxiety, so as far as I can remember, this symptom has always affected me. I never understood why frightening images and scenarios would pop into my head, leaving me anxious and scared. I didn't know I was experiencing intrusive thoughts or why they were disrupting my reality.
People who suffer from anxiety often experience these episodes where they see an alarming event playing out in their head. These intrusive thoughts are frightening scenarios we create, causing us to think of harmful things we might do to ourselves or people we love.
The thing is, though, we would never act on these thoughts, and we know that, but we feel the fear as if they are really happening, and they make us incredibly uncomfortable. These thoughts are an automatic reaction and completely out of our control. Our brains become a movie reel of thoughts and actions we play out in our mind, and we can't look away.
When I was a kid, these intrusive thoughts came in the form of monsters, like the ones you saw in movies. Despite knowing monsters didn't exist, they came alive in my mind and gave me physical symptoms of fear. Sometimes it would get to be too much, and I would hide under my covers and cry at night. I knew in my mind nothing could hurt me because there was physically nothing there, but I couldn't understand why these images haunted me.
I just wanted to get to my destination, but these thoughts would keep running through my mind, and I couldn't stop them.
As I gained more life experiences, my intrusive thoughts developed into other fears. Now that I was older, these thoughts turned into new scenarios, ones that felt more real. For example, when I started driving, I'd see myself veering off the road, hitting a side rail, flying off a ledge, or running head-on into a semi. I didn't really want to do any of these things. I just wanted to get to my destination, but these thoughts would keep running through my mind, and I couldn't stop them.
I've learned that these intrusive thoughts are our brain's coping mechanism for fear. They distract us from the anxiety we are feeling in real life with a fictitious event we can focus on instead. This is your brain's way of trying to help you with the anxiety you're experiencing in real life. It's as if your brain is telling you, "Look, I know you're afraid, but it could be worse, so whatever is going on isn't that bad."
Believe it or not, my childhood monsters have followed me into adulthood, and I still see them when I get anxious. Because I've been experiencing them for so long, I've mostly become numb to their effects. However, I do pay attention when these intrusive thoughts surface, as it's an indication that my anxiety is off the charts and I need to stop and assess myself.
I've opened up about it to only a few of my closest friends; one has anxiety and confirmed that she herself experiences the same thing. She thought she was crazy like me and didn't dare tell a soul for fear of judgment and ridicule. It was relieving to both her and me that we were not alone.
I want those who don't experience intrusive thoughts to know this is not something to be alarmed about. We are in no way looking to hurt ourselves or anyone else, we are just trying to cope with our anxiety. If someone close to you experiences these intrusive thoughts, just love and support them. That understanding will help ease the anxiety we feel from even having these thoughts. Know, though, that this is not a problem you can solve; this is a process that we will go through regardless.
If you struggle with intrusive thoughts, share them. The more we share these experiences, the better we can understand ourselves and others and the more we can help each other. Know you are not alone and you are not crazy.

12 Workout Leggings That Warrant a "Dangerous Curves Ahead" Warning
Every girl knows that shopping for leggings can either be an exhilarating or painful experience. When a pair is good, they're really good, but when something's off, you just want to give up and commit to sweats forever.
