Elizabeth Olsen on Rumors She'll Play Michelle in Fuller House: "What Is Wrong With People?"
Fuller House is still going strong at Netflix with three seasons under its belt so far, but there's still a little something missing from the family sitcom: Michelle Tanner. While key characters such as D.J. (Candace Cameron Bure), Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin), Kimmy (Andrea Barber), and even Uncle Jesse (John Stamos) returned, the streaming giant wasn't able to woo Mary-Kate or Ashley Olsen back to reprise their roles as the youngest member of the Tanner family. Considering they now run a highly successful fashion empire, it wasn't surprising.
In 2016, Stamos revealed that the show had approached the Olsens' younger sister, Wind River actress Elizabeth Olsen, to play Michelle instead. "We actually went to . . . I don't think this has been talked about. I didn't do it, I think [executive producer] Jeff Franklin did. I said, 'Call the sister. Ask her,'" he dished to Andy Cohen on his Sirius XM show, Radio Andy. "We talked to her agent and her agent was like, 'Come on, she's not going to do that.' But we did call her agent."
According to Elizabeth Olsen, that's not at all what happened. The Avengers: Infinity War star called into the pop-culture podcast Everything Iconic with Danny Pellegrino, where she not only discussed the upcoming installment in the Marvel superhero franchise, but also touched on the rumors that she'd ever play Michelle.
"That [rumor] was weird. It was like, 'Leave me out of this!'" she said with a laugh. "This has nothing to do with me. What is wrong with people? Then I had to answer questions about it immediately after because I was doing press, and I had to be like, 'I don't know what anyone's talking about! Stop talking to me about this.'"
Welp, there you have it! Olsen, who also admitted she's yet to watch a single episode of Fuller House, definitely won't be portraying Michelle Tanner anytime soon. The show actually directly addressed her absence in season two during the Thanksgiving episode. After D.J. says a prayer before dinner, she mentions how she hopes her little sister will be able to join them next year. Jesse then breaks the fourth wall by looking into the camera and saying, "Come, it'll be fun! Have mercy!"
If Netflix doesn't opt to recast the role, it's clearly going to need a lot more than mercy to get any Olsen family member to return. Listen to Olsen's full (and pretty entertaining) interview with Pellegrino below, but fast-forward to the 23:30 mark to get to their Fuller House conversation.
The Duffer Brothers Say the Lawsuit Against Stranger Things Is "Completely Meritless"
Update: On April 4, Matt and Ross Duffer responded to the lawsuit, calling it "completely meritless." Alex Kohner, who is representing the brothers, says plaintiff Charlie Kessler "had no connection to the creation or development of Stranger Things. The Duffer brothers have neither seen Mr. Kessler's short film nor discussed any project with him. This is just an attempt to profit from other people's creativity and hard work."
Original Story: It seems like Stranger Things just can't catch a break these days. Just weeks after a former crew member accused creators Matt and Ross Duffer of verbal abuse, it seems the show is facing a major lawsuit. According to a report from Entertainment Weekly, a filmmaker named Charlie Kessler claims he came up with the original idea and concept for the show, and the Duffers stole the entire project out from under him. While the water in this area is murky - just refer to the whole Shape of Water controversy if you're skeptical - there may be some evidence to back up the claims.
In the lawsuit, Kessler refers to a short film he made called Montauk. The project premiered in 2012 and even earned accolades at the Hamptons International Film Festival. Kessler says he pitched a series to the Duffers in 2014; it would be called The Montauk Project. He even claims to have "presented materials" of his own that added color to the potential project.
Here's where things get dicey. Stranger Things was originally called Montauk when the Duffer brothers were pitching it around. The inspiration comes from a very real conspiracy theory called "the Montauk Project," which clearly connects to Kessler's alleged original idea. Eventually, the Duffers' Netflix show became Stranger Things, but a quick glance through the history of Montauk will prove that they kept a lot of the concepts from that original story.
The one thing that's working in the Duffers' favor is the fact that they took their show in a very different direction. Kessler's short film is set in the '70s, and it's very focused on the conspiracies surrounding Montauk. The Duffers moved Stranger Things to Indiana, added their own tweaks to the story, and set it in the '80s and stuffed it with pop culture references and homages. As the show moves into its third season, it's clear that it's quite a ways away from the events that happened in Montauk, but there's no denying the connection between the two projects. Whether the case will move forward remains to be seen.
The Time Jump on Season 6 of The Americans Is a Lot Shorter Than You Think
When we left The Americans at the end of season five, Elizabeth and Philip Jennings - played by real-life couple Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys - are struggling to find balance in their double lives as Russian spies and American suburbanites, their children Paige and Henry are still living at home, Oleg Igorevich is in serious trouble with his employer (er, the KGB), FBI agent Stan Beeman is no closer to finding out who his neighbors really are, and Mikhail Gorbachev is coming into power in the Soviet Union. But as the first episode of season six opened, we quickly realized we had jumped ahead in time - from 1984 to 1987. What was it exactly that tipped us off to this three-year fast forward? We investigate.
- In the opening montage, Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over" plays steadily in the background as we see just how much Elizabeth and Philip's lives have veered in different directions in light of Philip's early "retirement." While the song actually debuted in late 1986, it remained on the Billboard Hot 100 well into 1987.
- The majority of the first episode's storyline centers on an upcoming summit between the US and the Soviet Union, which is most likely a reference to a very real summit that took place in December 1987. It was there that the INF Treaty was signed into place by US President Ronald Reagan and Gorbachev.
- In one fleeting scene, we spotted two movie posters: The Pick-Up Artist and Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise. Both were released in late 1987.
- The kids have flown the coop! Paige is now a student at George Washington University, and Henry is a star hockey player at his boarding school, St. Edward's.
- Some other (smaller) things that note the passage of time: Igorevich is now married with a 1-year-old son, Beeman's FBI partner has a newborn baby, and the Jennings' travel agency has expanded into a newer, flashier office.
The Incredibly Sweet Reason Blockers Is One of Leslie Mann's Most Personal Films
Leslie Mann has so many genuinely hilarious scenes in Blockers that it's difficult to narrow down a favorite. Could it be when she persuades John Cena to butt-chug a beer? Or when she channels Vin Diesel in a car chase reminiscent of Fast and Furious? Maybe it's when she army crawls out of a hotel room in a dress roughly the size of a circus tent? While her physical comedy had both me and the rest of the people in an early screening of the film howling with laughter, she truly shines in the movie's quieter, more emotional moments.
Leslie stars as Lisa in the raunchy feminist comedy directed by Kay Cannon. Lisa is a single mom who's having trouble with the idea that her teenage daughter Julie (Big Little Lies's Kathryn Newton) might choose to go to college all the way in LA instead of somewhere near the Chicago suburbs. It's that anxiety that fuels Lisa's decision to try to keep her daughter from losing her virginity on prom night, along with the help of two other overprotective parents (played by Cena and Ike Barinholtz).
Lisa and Julie's relationship easily could have had a stereotypical nagging-mom/rebellious-teenager dynamic, but instead their bond comes across as having a surprising amount of depth and tenderness, which is in a large part thanks to Leslie's convincing performance. As it turns out, she didn't have to work too hard to imagine she was a mother about to send her high school senior off into the world.
"I was in the middle of sending my daughter away to college when we started shooting the movie, so I really related to that part of the story," she told me recently over the phone. "It was really great having that outlet, to be able to talk about it every day, because that's what's happening in the movie. It was really great for me. Otherwise, I think I would've gone to bed for a month and a half with the drapes closed!"
One of the remarkable things about Leslie's career - of which there are many remarkable things - is the way she's been able to keep many of her roles so personal. Some of her funniest characters have been in movies like The 40-Year-Old Virgin, This Is 40, and Knocked Up, all products of the equally funny mind of her real-life husband, writer and director Judd Apatow. It's no surprise that they've emerged as Hollywood's most hilarious power couple over the years, and later the most hilarious power family; the pair share two daughters, Maude and Iris.
Image Source: Getty / Tibrina Hobson
While Iris is just 15, 20-year-old Maude is busy carving out her own path as an actress. She's appeared in everything from This Is 40 to Girls and the buzzy upcoming Assassination Nation while also balancing her studies at Northwestern University. Her jump from life in California with her parents to the Chicago-based college is coincidentally the reverse of Lisa and Julie's situation in Blockers.
"It was so devastating to have my daughter go away to college," Leslie said of seeing her daughter leave to start school. "I think it's very hard for parents to have little babies and be there for them for their entire lives and be in charge and responsible for them and take care of them - and suddenly they want their independence. They want to make their own choices and live their own lives. It's really scary for parents to let go and let them do that."
Seeing Lisa sort through her emotions about Julie leaving for college in the film is a no-doubt relatable story arc for any parent, and the How to Be Single actress definitely counts herself as one of them. "It's scary! What if they make the wrong decision?" she joked. "I think that feeling of frustration is in our movie, loud and clear."
Blockers opens in theaters on April 6.
Lady Gaga's Stunning Cover of Elton John's "Your Song" Might Be Better Than the Original
Elton John's "Your Song" is unquestionably one of the most frequently covered songs, but now that Lady Gaga's version just entered the mix, no one else's stacks up. As part of Elton John's upcoming tribute album, Revamp, Gaga released her contribution on March 29: a stunning "Your Song" cover that's now available on YouTube and Spotify. The legendary Elton John has been tapping his own picks for Revamp, and other confirmed songs so far include Demi Lovato's "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" and Chris Stapleton's "I Want Love." The album is set for an April 6 release.
HERE WE ARE!!! Here's my cover of one of the greatest songs of all time. Elton John and Bernie Taupin's "Your Song." What an honor it was to record. THATS ME ON THE PIANO! THIS ONES FOR YOU!!💕✨ https://t.co/SYyfQgJGtH pic.twitter.com/5NeVDwDLUN
- Lady Gaga (@ladygaga) March 29, 2018
Gaga shared her excitement for her track, letting fans know she considers "Your Song" one of the "greatest songs of all time," and that yes, those are her piano-playing skills. Listen to her powerful cover above and prepare to fall in love with this beautiful song all over again. I'm not one of those who can easily hide my love for this cover, so if you're like me, you'll have it on repeat.
Uh-Oh! Dwayne Johnson Says He "Harbors No Ill Will" Against Vin Diesel - but Then Takes It Back
Dwayne Johnson had one hell of a 2017, and if you thought he had any plans of slowing down this year, think again. The 45-year-old actor is Rolling Stone magazine's April issue cover star, and in the accompanying interview, Dwayne opened up about everything from his family to his feud with Vin Diesel to his potential run for the presidency. The magazine hits stands on April 6, but if you don't want to wait until then, read Dwayne's full interview here.
- On his decades-long battle with depression: "I've had a few bouts of depression, [which] happens to a lot of us. Around 2008, 2009, I was going through a lot of personal sh*t that was really f*cking me up. I was just struggling, man; struggling to figure out what kind of dad am I gonna be, realizing I'd done a piss-poor job of cultivating relationships, and a lot of my friends had fallen by the wayside. I was just scared. Personally, everything was in a very bad and challenging place, and then professionally, I couldn't bet on myself; I wasn't used to that. I'd always felt like I could put in the work and fix the scenario with my own two hands. No one's going to see me play a borderline psychopath suffering from depression. I have friends I admire, Oscar winners, who approach our craft with the idea of 'Sometimes it comes out a little darker and nobody will see it, but it's for me.' Great, but I have other things I can do for me. I'm gonna take care of you, the audience. You pay your hard-earned money - I don't need to bring my dark sh*t to you. Maybe a little, but if it's in there, we're gonna overcome it."
- On whether he's actually running for president: "Look, people are very excited, and it's so flattering that they're excited. I think it's also a function of being very unsatisfied with our current president, but this is a skill set that requires years and years of experience on a local level, on a state level, and then on a national level. I have the utmost respect for our country and that position, and I'm not delusioned in any way to think, 'Oh, absolutely, if [Donald] Trump can do it, I can do it, and I'll see you in 20-whatever, get ready.' Not at all. In a lot of people's minds, what Trump has proved is that anybody can run for president, and in a lot of people's minds, what he's also proved is that not everybody should run for president. What I'm sensing now is that we have to pivot back to people who have a deep-rooted knowledge of American history and politics and experience in policy and how laws get made. I think that pivot has to happen."
- On what he and girlfriend Lauren Hashian plan on naming their new baby: "We're thinking about Tia. It's simple, it's Polynesian-ish, and I feel like she might come out looking like a Tia," Lauren said. "I mean, she could come out any which way, because we're complete opposites."
"It was funny - we were having dinner with Emily Blunt, who I'm getting ready to work with [on Disney's Jungle Cruise], and I said, 'What do you think of Tia?'" Dwayne added. "She went, 'No one's gonna f*ck with a Tia Johnson.'"
- On his feud with Fast and Furious costar Vin Diesel: "We were not in any scenes together [in The Fate of the Furious]. Vin and I had a few discussions including an important face-to-face in my trailer. What I came to realize is that we have a fundamental difference in philosophies on how we approach movie-making and collaborating. It took me some time, but I'm grateful for that clarity. Whether we work together again or not. Right now, I'm concentrating on making the [Hobbs and Shaw] spinoff as good as it can be, but I wish him all the best and I harbor no ill will there just because of the clarity we have. Actually, you can erase that last part about no ill will. We'll just keep it with the clarity."
There Are Only a Few Precious Episodes of The Americans Left Before It Ends For Good
The Americans has finally returned for its sixth season, but the premiere is bittersweet, as it also marks the show's final season. FX previously announced that season six would consist of 10 episodes instead of the usual 13, but that doesn't mean it won't be epic. "There are a lot of pieces hanging out there, a lot of stories, a lot of threads of who these people are and how their lives are going to end up, and their emotional development," showrunner Joe Weisberg revealed during the ATX TV Festival back in June. "The final season is only 10 episodes. It'll be action packed and emotion packed."
Showrunner Joel Fields also said that they'd had to write more because the show is coming to an end. "Usually we break the entire arc of next season at the end of the prior season and we usually outline the first seven episodes. In this case, it was sort of impossible to write episodes four, five, six, and seven and we had to outline all of season six in advance."
Now the only remaining question is how The Americans will wrap things up. After loyally following Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys through five dramatic seasons, we have a feeling it'll be a tense, but satisfying conclusion.
Amandla Stenberg Starts a Fiery Revolution in The Darkest Minds Trailer
The Darkest Minds is one of many YA books being turned into movies this year, and now we finally have our first good look at it. The film, which is based on the novel by Alexandra Bracken, follows 16-year-old Ruby (Hunger Games alum Amandla Stenberg) through a dystopian future where kids and teenagers are locked up in camps by the government after they start developing mysterious new abilities. The extremely powerful Ruby manages to escape her camp with a group of fellow kids, and they soon start building a resistance to take back their freedom. The Darkest Minds comes from the producers of Stranger Things and also stars Mandy Moore and Gwendoline Christie. Watch the trailer above before it hits theaters on Aug. 3!
Mindy Kaling, Precious Human, Can't Help but Shed a Tear Over B.J. Novak's Sweet Tribute
It's plain and simple: we don't deserve Mindy Kaling. The incredibly sweet actress and mother sat down with Today's Hoda Kotb on Wednesday and ended up making us highly emotional in the process. Aside from gushing about her daughter, she also took a moment to discuss her incredible career. While talking about all of her achievements over the past few years - including wrapping The Mindy Project; starring in A Wrinkle in Time alongside Oprah and Reese Witherspoon; and creating, writing, and producing the NBC series Champions - the 38-year-old couldn't help but get a little choked up, especially when Hoda brought up her friend B.J. Novak's recent tribute to her.
Shortly after the release of A Wrinkle in Time, her former Office costar tweeted a poster of her outside the small apartment she used to live in. "That actually makes me want to tear up," Mindy told Hoda about his post. "That's really moving . . . When I was coming up, there was no one who looked like me on TV or film, and that was such a nice thing that he remembered that." It didn't take long for the tears to start flowing after that. "No, it's true," she continued. "If you dream big, you can get whatever you want." Great, now we're crying too! If you need us, we'll just be plotting how we can become BFFs with Mindy Kaling when she attends POPSUGAR Play/Ground this Summer.
Why James Cameron's Idea For Jurassic Park Would Have Been SO MUCH Bloodier
By now, Jurassic Park is a bona fide classic. The 1993 film launched one of the most iconic franchises in the modern film era, and it featured cutting-edge practical effects and some pretty phenomenal action sequences. 25 years later, there are a lot of fun facts about the film, but one of the most interesting tidbits has been bubbling up recently, and it's going to blow your mind.
We all know how Steven Spielberg really knocked this one out of the park, but before production really got into full swing, a handful of other directors were vying for the rights to the book. One of them was James Cameron, best known for the endlessly magical Titanic and Avatar. Cameron didn't just throw his hat in the ring; in 2012, he revealed that he actually had an idea of how he wanted to execute the film. Basically, it would have been way gorier.
"I'd have gone further, nastier. Much nastier."
"I tried to buy the book rights, and he beat me to it by a few hours," Cameron revealed at the time. "But when I saw the film, I realized that I was not the right person to make the film, he was. Because he made a dinosaur movie for kids, and mine would have been Aliens with dinosaurs, and that wouldn't have been fair. Dinosaurs are for eight-year-olds. We can all enjoy it, too, but kids get dinosaurs, and they should not have been excluded for that. His sensibility was right for that film, I'd have gone further, nastier. Much nastier."
Considering the Alien franchise includes some of the grisliest deaths in movie history (we're looking at you, alien-bursting-out-of-a-guy's-chest scene), we're going to go ahead and say Cameron's Jurassic Park would have been slapped with a hard R rating. Cameron seems to think Spielberg took it in the right direction, but we can't help but wish we could see this darker, "nastier" take on the source material. Oh, well.
The Internet Is Obsessed With This New Meme About How Smart People Are
If you've been looking for a sign of your own intellectual superiority, a new meme just arrived for you. The expanding brain meme is a series of images showing differently stimulated brainwaves relative to specific beliefs or habits. It's also exactly what the internet needed to stroke its own collective ego. Quickly rising in popularity on Tumblr, Twitter, and Reddit, the expanding brain images are a mix of facetiousness and absurdity.
Some of the memes involve implying that people who use variations of "whom" are more enlightened than those who use "who," or that people who call their garages "car holes" are much smarter. We've rounded up some of the best memes (for educational purposes, of course), so take a minute to become enlightened by looking them over. Soon enough, your brain will be glowing and you'll be in stitches from the pure silliness.
The 15 Best Independent Bookstores in the US
When it's time to hit the road for a vacation, there are two things that bookworms know to be true. First of all, you can never pack too many books in your suitcase and carry-on (although those overweight luggage fees are definitely not on our side). The other is that, no matter where we go, it would be straight-up sacrilege to not visit any and all renowned independent bookstores in the vicinity.
With no disrespect to chain bookstores, there's nothing quite as magical as an independent bookstore. Each has its own unique atmosphere, decor, selection, and claim to fame, but they all have one thing in common - when a bookworm steps inside, we immediately know that we could spend an entire day there.
Despite the rise of e-readers, there's no shortage of incredible independent bookstores in America. In fact, some of us (*raises hand*) have even planned trips just so we can visit certain indies. Luckily, many of them are located in popular tourist destinations like New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago. So before you head out on your next trip, check out this list of the 15 best independent bookstores in the country.
We Don't Know If We're More Floored by This Hawaiian Wedding Venue or the Bride's Gown
This is what destination wedding dreams are made of. Australian couple Alana and Nick officially became husband and wife at Maui's Haiku Mill, a stunning, lush venue that turned out to be a memorable holiday location for them and their guests. "We figured we met overseas, were engaged overseas, let's get married overseas, too!" Alana told their photographer.
The couple met on a tour while sailing through the Croatian Islands and decided to wed in Maui, where they got engaged. Nick proposed at sunrise and arranged a Champagne breakfast and engagement photo shoot to follow. He really planned a romantic day out with a picnic lunch by the water and an evening spa trip.
On their big day, the bride completely stole the show. Even though the wedding venue itself will floor you, you won't be able to keep your eyes off of Alana's gorgeous gown. See the photos now!

Trump's Latest Speech Left the Entire Internet Confused as F*ck
On April 2, Melania Trump hosted 2018's annual Easter Egg Roll on the South Lawn of the White House. Just before the festivities got underway, her husband took the floor to address the crowd - and that's when things went from zero to incoherent real quick. After welcoming the guests, most of whom were young children, and repeating how "perfect" and "beautiful" the weather was despite the rainy forecast, the POTUS went on to awkwardly struggle to describe the White House itself, all while standing right in front of it.
"I want to thank the White House Historical Association and all of the people that work so hard with Melania, with everybody, to keep this incredible house or building or whatever you want to call it - because there really is no name for it; it is special," he said. "We keep it in tip-top shape. We call it sometimes tippy-top shape. And it's a great, great place." Um . . . what?! If you don't believe that he actually uttered this stream of consciousness, just watch the speech unfold in all its cringeworthiness ahead.

- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 2, 2018
The bunny next to Trump truly had the most appropriate facial expression during the train wreck of an address. Needless to say, as soon as the Trump's Easter Egg Roll speech was broadcast, Twitter users of the world had a lot to say about it. I mean, can you blame them?
Trump's Biggest Problem Isn't the Media - It's Homophones
President Donald Trump often takes to Twitter to broadcast the inner workings of his mind to the women, men, and children of Planet Earth. And sometimes what he types isn't quite what he intends . . . so despite being the leader of the free world, he deletes the tweet and tries again.
But the longer Trump is in the White House and the more pressure that is placed on the former real estate developer and reality TV host, the more these flubs seem to be happening. So much so that it's starting to feel an awful lot like the real thorn in Trump's side isn't the media or the much-decried leaks in his revolving-door White House - it's the grammar school-level concept of the homophone. Defined by Merriam-Webster as "one of two or more words pronounced alike but different in meaning or derivation or spelling (such as the words to, too, and two)," homophones also happen to be the one thing that will never, ever be caught by a standard spellcheck program. As multiple spellings are correct, it wholly falls on the author of a sentence to ensure that the correct spelling is employed . . . and for Trump, that seems to be a bit too much of an ask.
While a mistake of this kind can absolutely be chalked up to human nature when it happens a couple of times, it's an alarming indication of an individual's mental state when it happens on a near-weekly basis. And it's not just homophones, either, or words like "covfefe" or "tapp." It runs over to a "this is how it sounds, so that must be how it's spelled" mindset, one that's solely based on acting on impulse, which is frankly inexplicable for someone who has ready access to the nuclear codes. The most Pavlovian part of the whole thing, though, is the fact that we're talking about someone who came from a public-facing life and has been under scrutiny for years. And yet, in all that time, he has never learned to revise his own thoughts before word-vomiting into the internet.
It's also very telling of a deeper, darker insecurity that drives the president to act in such impetuous ways. And while the Goldwater Rule bars us from having someone with professional psychoanalytical abilities weigh in, these erratic outbursts that aren't kept in check by a self-editing id are enough to make the average individual wonder if an impulsive ego can override the boundaries of the rules our Founding Fathers put forth.
As it stands, though, there isn't much recourse for sending a typo-ridden tweet. The president's behavior warrants close attention, but for now the only thing we can do is point at the tweets and laugh at the most powerful man in the world being baffled by homophones. And while Trump may have removed a lot of the evidence of his aversion to self-editing, the internet is rich with screenshots and analysis that will ensure that gone will never be forgotten. Behold some of our president's greatest (spelling) hits.

The Internet Made the Best Picture Envelope Into a Meme Because It Has Zero Chill
While the Oscars are known for giving awards to unlikely winners, no one saw the biggest snafu to happen in its history coming: Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty announcing the wrong winner, La La Land, for best picture. As cast and crew members were giving their acceptance speeches, La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz realized the mistake and held up the correct envelope showing that Moonlight actually won. The internet couldn't believe the error and knew the only way to take it in stride: to meme the moment. Ahead, check out the funniest memes of Horowitz holding up the best picture envelope, and then catch up on what Barry Jenkins and Mahershala Ali had to say about the win.
This Student Wrote 127 Pages in Response to an Infuriating Catholic School Assignment
I go to a Catholic high school, and they wanted me to write a paper on why gay marriage is "wrong and dangerous", so instead I wrote this 127 page paper. from lgbt
One Catholic high school student in Missouri is going viral for sharing the details of their shocking religion class assignment - along with the epic way they responded to it.
Reddit user averagesmurf recently shared the above photo, showing the cover of their latest morality class assignment. The student's teacher allegedly assigned the high school students to write a paper about why gay marriage is "wrong and dangerous," but this teen had a little something different up their sleeve. Instead, they cranked out a whopping 127 pages about why gay marriage is actually "fabulous," backed up with Bible references and historical quotes.
The post garnered more than 900 comments from people who offered up both positive and negative reactions. Some praised the student's work, with one user saying, "Good job :) hope you got an A." Yet others were suspicious that the photo was a fluke, with another user writing, "This smells like bullsh*t to me, 127 pages is stupidly long and I doubt any school would assign an essay about the dangers of gay marriage."
So, the student shared a few now-deleted snapshots of supposed pages from the assignment to prove its validity. The typed pages incorporate multiple Bible quotes and citations to support the student's argument that gay marriage should not be frowned upon by the Church. On top of that, the student offered up an in-depth explanation of what the assignment entailed.
Though we may not know for sure whether this student's assignment was real, we sure hope it is, because it looks like some people in this world still need to broaden their viewpoint on this hot topic.
How Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Lives on Through the Fight For Civil Rights
On April 4, 1968, America lost civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Fifty years after his death, at a time when Dr. King would have been 89, his message is still being held close to heart - and is still being fought for.
At the time of Dr. King's death in Memphis, TN, unrest broke out in response to the assassination. Dr. King was in Memphis in anticipation of a march he was to lead, one that his attorneys were fighting for in federal court, one that was unequivocally supposed to be orderly and peaceful. He was killed at the Lorraine Hotel in the company of musician Ben Branch and Rev. Jesse Jackson, preparing to depart for dinner.
In the time that has elapsed since that fateful April day, there are things that have and have not changed in America. "Dr. King bequeathed African-Americans the will to resist and the right to vote," Rev. Jesse Jackson recently wrote in The New York Times, reflecting on Dr. King's death and highlighting current activism against hate. "Five decades ago, a segregationist governor, George Wallace, peddled hate and division in reaction to the civil rights movement. Today, it is the president himself who is inciting anguish, bigotry and fear."
Similarly, former president Barack Obama sat down with civil rights activist Rep. John Lewis to reflect on Dr. King's life and legacy. The conversation was a part of a roundtable at the My Brother's Keeper Alliance with students in Washington, DC, in the hopes of inspiring future leaders. "Being on the right side of history isn't always possible," Obama said. "And it isn't always easy . . . You don't know whether your labors will deliver." Lewis continued his thought, noting that, "when you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, you have a moral obligation to do something, to say something."
"Dr. King inspired us to do just that," Lewis said.
A tension in Dr. King's narrative, because he is remembered both as a freedom fighter as well as an outlaw, and it's a fact that resonates sharply in a deeply divided contemporary America, with parallel activism taking place today. While rumors that Dr. King's death was orchestrated by the FBI or Ku Klux Klan continue to roil (unproven), the root of these stories underscore the sanitation of the activist's legacy: Dr. King was seen as unAmerican and a "danger" to the nation set against the unpopularity of civil rights movement at the time. This sentiment has been noted as extremely similar to comments made by critics of Black Lives Matter, today.
Today, on the anniversary of his death, Dr. King is being celebrated far and wide by sometimes antithetical public figures. Memorials and inspirational quotes are swirling on and offline, coming from a mix of public figures from Fr. James Martin to Qasim Rashid, former vice president Joe Biden to Vice President Mike Pence, Rep. Kamala Harris to Gov. Mike Huckabee, RuPaul to Piers Morgan.
Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the 50th anniversary of his assassination. Earlier this year I spoke about Dr. King's legacy of justice and peace, and his impact on uniting Americans. #MLK50 Proclamation: https://t.co/XXtPO0VX5A pic.twitter.com/SH0esMSyMT
- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 4, 2018
President Donald Trump added his voice to the mix by sharing a video on Twitter regarding Dr. King's work uniting Americans. "On this cherished day, we honor the memory of Rev. King," Trump said. "We rededicate ourselves to a glorious future where every American from every walk of life can live free from fear, liberated from hatred, and uplifted by boundless love for their fellow citizens."
It's a far cry from the last time Trump honored Dr. King. During the annual MLK Day Proclamation on Jan. 12 - he refused to answer questions regarding comments made the day before in which he referred to some African and Caribbean nations as "sh*thole countries." It also should be noted that Trump once violated the Fair Housing Act by refusing to provide housing to black tenants in the 1970s.
Regardless of the current administration, Dr. King's legacy continues to be heard and held dear in America - and his words will never be forgotten, the words that will continue to inspire generations of Americans for decades (if not centuries) to come.
Flamethrowers, Cassette Players, and Fake Teeth: Trump's Utterly Bizarre Choices For Chinese Import Tariff Hike
President Donald Trump made it to the highest office in the land by promising a slew of haughty (and in some cases, damn near impossible) policy changes, but while the vast majority have yet to materialize, the looming midterm elections appear to have kicked the administration into overdrive on getting at least something to show for the year-and-change since he became POTUS. As a result, on April 3 we saw two incredibly inadvisable moves from the White House: first, Trump announced a plan to send the National Guard to the Mexican border as a stopgap for his yet-to-be-realized wall, and second, he announced a tariff would be imposed on a staggering $50 billion worth of Chinese imports, presumably to save face with regards to the trade practices the president has frequently deemed "unfair."
Here's the thing about those Chinese imports, though: there are a lot of utterly bizarre products in the 45-page document that will soon face a 25-percent hike in taxes. And while the vast majority of the list does indeed make sense, we couldn't help but point out some of the most inexplicable line entries that have left us scratching our heads.
Behold:
- Medicaments containing vitamin B12 synthesized from aromatic or mod. Aromatic compounds, in dosage form or packed for retail
- Artificial parts of the body (other than artificial joints) and parts and accessories thereof, nesoi
- Nuclear reactors
- Bakery ovens, including biscuit ovens
- Dishwashing machines of the household type
- Fire extinguishers, whether or not charged
- Snowplows and snowblowers
- Brewery machinery, nesi
- Cash registers
- Cassette players (non-recording), nesoi
- Black and white or other monochrome video projectors
- Balloons, dirigibles and non-powered aircraft, gliders and hang gliders
- Lasers, other than laser diodes
- Catheters, cannulae and the like nesi, used in medical, surgical, dental or veterinary sciences, and parts and accessories thereof
- Dental cements and other dental fillings; bone reconstruction cements
- Rocket launchers; flame-throwers; grenade launchers; torpedo tubes and similar projectors
- Hearing aids, excluding parts and accessories thereof
At this stage it's unclear how increasing the cost of nuclear reactors, flame-throwers, and hang gliders is going to aid the White House with any type of messaging – but what is clear is that China is willing to go tit-for-tat when it comes to laying down the law. The country was quick toissue a counter-proposal which includes several items that hit a little closer to home for US citizens than, say, cassette players: soybeans, cars, and chemicals.
While this may bring us one step closer to a full-on trade war with China, all is not lost – these are not official declarations just yet. There are still 60 days in which comments can be made before the public hearing takes place, so if you are feeling really outraged by the idea that biscuit ovens will soon skyrocket in price, the Office of the US Trade Representative encourages individuals to head on over to the public docket and speak their minds.
Naturally, as of the time of publication – at 12:00 p.m. ET, on April 4 – you'll get a page error.
Here's What Those Russian Facebook Ads We've Heard So Much About Actually Look Like
Thanks to ongoing public hearings in Washington DC centered on Russia's social media meddling during the 2016 election, we finally have our first real look at what it is that Vladimir Putin's fabled troll farms were actually doing. The bad news? Much of what was provided as evidence by the House Intelligence Committee on Nov. 1 is not that far off from what we've come to expect from overzealous Americans on all sides of the political spectrum.
To be clear, only a sampling of the more than 3,000 ads that were purchased in the lead-up to the election have been shared with the public so far. But what is immediately evident to any regular Facebook user is that outside of some very, very misused colloquialisms and a few bizarre cultural interpretations, the extent to which the Russian infiltrators were able to successfully manipulate social tensions is staggering. Tackling everything from Black Lives Matter to gun policy to Islam, the level of sophistication and mimicry present is incredibly hard to wrap your head around, especially when put against a background of fringe voices that are louder now than ever.
Ahead, we've pulled together many of the images released by Congress as evidence for easy viewing. But as California Senator Dianne Feinstein said during the hearings, "What we're talking about is a cataclysmic change. What we're talking about is the beginning of cyberwarfare. What we're talking about is a major foreign power with sophistication and ability to involve themselves in a presidential election and sow conflict and discontent all over this country. We are not going to go away, gentlemen. And this is a very big deal."
From where we stand, with nearly 126 million Americans having seen these downright inflammatory posts and not having thought anything of it - well, we really couldn't agree more. And perhaps being able to put some tangible imagery behind the amorphous idea of Russian meddling will make us all think twice before we scroll past an image such as the ones ahead on any of our social feeds ever again.
Salt Bae Who? "Walmart Yodel Boy" Is Shaping Up to Be 2018's Best Meme Yet

It's truly only a matter of time before 10-year-old Mason Ramsey makes a well-deserved appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The young boy is taking the internet by storm after video footage surfaced of him showing off his yodeling chops in the middle of a Walmart in Harrisburg, IL. In the now-viral clip, Mason belts out the lyrics to Hank Williams's "Lovesick Blues" while engaging in some offbeat foot-tapping (and standing in front of a lovely selection of air mattresses). Having donned a red bow tie, a sizable belt buckle, and clunky boots, Mason puts his impressive yodel on display for his fellow Walmart shoppers, and to be honest, the kid's got talent that anyone - even nonyodelers - can appreciate.
When the internet caught wind of Mason's legendary singing skills, the Illinois boy went through what we like to call "the meme treatment": almost instantaneously, dozens of Twitter users found themselves cracking wise about his yodeling on social media. Below is just a sampling of the LOL-worthy meme, but watch out, Salt Bae - "Walmart Yodel Boy" is here to snatch your spotlight faster than you can sensually sprinkle salt on a hunk of meat.

A Senator Suggested the Death Penalty For Women Who Get Abortions, and There Are Just No Words
Posted by Nonini for Idaho Lt. Governor on Sunday, October 15, 2017
A congressman is facing some well-earned backlash after a recent statement about abortion shocked even his most pro-life supporters. Idaho Senator Bob Nonini is currently running in the state's lieutenant governor race, and during a panel hosted by CrossPolitic on April 2, Nonini suggested the death penalty should be considered as punishment for women who have an abortion.
"There should be no abortion, and anyone who has an abortion should pay," the senator said according to the Associated Press. When moderators pressed him on the matter and asked if he considered the death penalty a possible punishment, Nonini reportedly nodded in agreement.
After news of his controversial statement broke, Nonini and his campaign seemed to be scrambling. Now, Nonini is claiming he never nodded in agreement to the suggestion of the death penalty – but is maintaining his staunchly pro-life stance. "Since abortion is murder, I believe we should consider penalties for individuals involved in these procedures," Nonini said in a statement following the panel.
Ultimately, the senator suggested there was a flaw in the fact that women have never been prosecuted for having abortions. "Prosecutions have always been focused on the abortionist," he said. Adding, "There is no way a woman would go to jail let alone face the death penalty. The statute alone, the threat of prosecution, would dramatically reduce abortion. That is my goal."
This 1 Old Trump Tweet Contradicts Everything He's Now Saying About the NFL
Donald Trump is a man of many words tweets, and more often than not, the thoughts he shares with his Twitter audience tend to directly contradict the tweets he's sent in the past. From tweets about the Oscars, to criticism of Barack Obama's handling of Hurricane Sandy, and just about everything in between, President Trump's past has come back to bite him. The latest incident? The National Football League.
Back in 2013, when then-President Obama urged the Washington Redskins to change the team name to something that didn't offend Native Americans, Trump had some thoughts. He tweeted that "our country has far bigger problems" and that the president should "FOCUS on them, not nonsense."
President should not be telling the Washington Redskins to change their name-our country has far bigger problems! FOCUS on them, not nonsense
- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 8, 2013
Now, just four years later, we find ourselves saying the exact same thing to Trump - and if we're being honest, the "far bigger problems" in hand seem a lot worse now than in 2013. The week of, Trump condemned Colin Kaepernick and the NFL players who have taken a knee during the national anthem to protest racism and police brutality across the country. He spent three full days tweeting about athletes "disrespecting our country or our flag," while our country faces the threat of a nuclear war with North Korea - what we'd qualify as a "far bigger problem."
If NFL fans refuse to go to games until players stop disrespecting our Flag & Country, you will see change take place fast. Fire or suspend!
- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 24, 2017
...NFL attendance and ratings are WAY DOWN. Boring games yes, but many stay away because they love our country. League should back U.S.
- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 24, 2017
Great solidarity for our National Anthem and for our Country. Standing with locked arms is good, kneeling is not acceptable. Bad ratings!
- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 24, 2017
The issue of kneeling has nothing to do with race. It is about respect for our Country, Flag and National Anthem. NFL must respect this!
- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 25, 2017
Looks like we have yet another set of tweets to add to the Presidential Flip Flops line of contradictory Trump tweets.
People Are Creating the Most Incredible Dances . . . to the Nostalgic Wii Theme Song
If you played video games growing up, then there are probably a few theme songs that can send you right back to the good ol' days in just a few bars. Who could ever forget the iconic score to Legend of Zelda, or even the elevator music that plays while you build your home on Sims? But there is one tune in particular that is capable of inspiring the most earnest nostalgia in the hearts of millennials: the Wii theme song that plays in the background of the Mii Channel. And while it's not exactly a "lit" track that inspires you to get up and dance, people are doing their damnedest.
In order to prove their ability to dance to even the most basic song, people on Instagram have turned the simple theme into a dance challenge: #TheWiiChallenge. Started by So You Think You Can Dance season 13 winner Kida the Great, the challenge is simple: turn the nostalgic video game theme song into a dance worthy of sharing with the world. Somehow, people are nailing it, too! Check out some of these surprisingly great examples of dancers channeling their inner Mii, then blow the dust off your Wii and let the music flow through you.
The 1 Character Related to Sirius Black That We Didn't See Coming at All
Harry Potter fans are known to constantly uncover new theories and details in the series. All it takes is one session of rereading a book and suddenly a new link between characters is clear. It's probably how one Reddit user discovered the possibility that Sirius Black's great-great-uncle might be Elphias Doge.
Posted by Reddit user Obversa, the theory involves a lot of history and knowledge of the Harry Potter universe. It boils down to three main points:
- Professor Dumbledore and Phineas Nigellus Black's second son, Phineas Black Jr., were good friends during their time at Hogwarts.
- The relationship between Phineas Nigellus Black Sr. and Dumbledore is both friendly and hostile, because Black Sr. didn't approve of his friendship with his son Black Jr.
- Dumbledore's relationship with Sirius Black was similar to what he had with Black Jr. And Sirius's unfriendly relationship with the portrait of Black Sr. is because Black Sr. sees Sirius repeating the same "mistakes" as Black Jr.
How does Black Jr. somehow become Elphias Doge? Well, based on when Dumbledore went to Hogwarts and the timing of when Black Jr. was born, they would've gone to the school at the same time. It was their friendship and Dumbledore's influence over Doge on Muggle-born rights that drove Black Sr. to disown him as his son. And though Doge is a pureblood, there's no record of his family in Harry Potter Limited Edition - A Guide to the Graphic Arts Department: Posters, Prints, and Publications from the Harry Potter Films, meaning perhaps he is a pureblood - but of another family, the Black family.
Still curious to fully understand how Doge and Sirius Black are related? Read the full theory below.
[Harry Potter] Elphias Doge is none other than Phineas Black [Jr.], the disowned great-great-uncle of Sirius Black. Thus, he is / was the last remaining Black. from FanTheories
The Viral Story of an Abandoned Dog Found in a Garbage Bag Will Make Your Heart Cry
Malissa Sergent Lewis was driving through her hometown of Harlan, KY, when she noticed a black garbage bag moving along the side of the road. Curious, Lewis went to inspect the bag only to find an abandoned puppy inside of it. Though the puppy had a collar, it didn't have a tag.
In an interview with The Dodo, Lewis explained the unexpected and horrifying discovery. "I could hardly wrap my mind around that," she said. "Something was alive in that bag, and I just knew I had to get whatever it was out." As one might imagine, the dog was relieved to be found. "As soon as I opened it up, and he saw light, he just started wagging his tail. He knew he was OK," she said.
Lewis has yet to figure out the circumstances surrounding the dog's abandonment, but investigators are reportedly looking into it. Lewis did share the miraculous story on Facebook in a series of videos that have gone viral with close to 20,000 shares. Accompanying the videos is a caption that states, "If this is your puppy, let me know. If you are the scoundrel who put it in a garbage bag and tossed it on the side of the road . . . you're a sicko."
Lewis is currently trying to find a permanent home for the dog, but she will continue to foster it until that happens. Perhaps one of those 900,000 viewers might be interested?
Solve the Brain-Teaser That Is Driving People on Facebook Insane
Hmm... Can you solve this?
I honestly have NO clue! I hope you guys can tell me ☆ SHARE and see if your friends Can! ☆

Posted by Lisa Woelke on Friday, January 29, 2016
Facebook user Lisa Woelke shared a brain-teaser that has been driving the Internet nuts. The post - which has been shared by more than 170,000 users - depicts a math equation with fruit items in lieu of numbers. For example, it can be deduced from the first line that one apple is equivalent to the number 10. Harmless enough, right? Wrong.
The most common answer for the remaining final line was 16 - and you shouldn't be discouraged if that's the answer you arrived at . . . it just isn't the correct one. The final answer is actually 14. You might be asking yourself, "What the what?" as you ponder the degeneration of your math skills, but it's OK. We can work through this together.
So yes, one apple equals 10, one banana bunch equals four, and the coconuts equal two. However, the final line alters the coconuts and bananas so that they are each missing one, respectively. In the case of the last line, there is only one coconut - equaling one - and three bananas in the bunch, which equal three. So one apple (10) plus one coconut (one) and three bananas (three) equal 14. Voilà!
