The Internet Is Obsessed With This New Meme About How Smart People Are
If you've been looking for a sign of your own intellectual superiority, a new meme just arrived for you. The expanding brain meme is a series of images showing differently stimulated brainwaves relative to specific beliefs or habits. It's also exactly what the internet needed to stroke its own collective ego. Quickly rising in popularity on Tumblr, Twitter, and Reddit, the expanding brain images are a mix of facetiousness and absurdity.
Some of the memes involve implying that people who use variations of "whom" are more enlightened than those who use "who," or that people who call their garages "car holes" are much smarter. We've rounded up some of the best memes (for educational purposes, of course), so take a minute to become enlightened by looking them over. Soon enough, your brain will be glowing and you'll be in stitches from the pure silliness.
The 15 Best Independent Bookstores in the US
When it's time to hit the road for a vacation, there are two things that bookworms know to be true. First of all, you can never pack too many books in your suitcase and carry-on (although those overweight luggage fees are definitely not on our side). The other is that, no matter where we go, it would be straight-up sacrilege to not visit any and all renowned independent bookstores in the vicinity.
With no disrespect to chain bookstores, there's nothing quite as magical as an independent bookstore. Each has its own unique atmosphere, decor, selection, and claim to fame, but they all have one thing in common - when a bookworm steps inside, we immediately know that we could spend an entire day there.
Despite the rise of e-readers, there's no shortage of incredible independent bookstores in America. In fact, some of us (*raises hand*) have even planned trips just so we can visit certain indies. Luckily, many of them are located in popular tourist destinations like New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago. So before you head out on your next trip, check out this list of the 15 best independent bookstores in the country.
We Don't Know If We're More Floored by This Hawaiian Wedding Venue or the Bride's Gown
This is what destination wedding dreams are made of. Australian couple Alana and Nick officially became husband and wife at Maui's Haiku Mill, a stunning, lush venue that turned out to be a memorable holiday location for them and their guests. "We figured we met overseas, were engaged overseas, let's get married overseas, too!" Alana told their photographer.
The couple met on a tour while sailing through the Croatian Islands and decided to wed in Maui, where they got engaged. Nick proposed at sunrise and arranged a Champagne breakfast and engagement photo shoot to follow. He really planned a romantic day out with a picnic lunch by the water and an evening spa trip.
On their big day, the bride completely stole the show. Even though the wedding venue itself will floor you, you won't be able to keep your eyes off of Alana's gorgeous gown. See the photos now!

Trump's Biggest Problem Isn't the Media - It's Homophones
President Donald Trump often takes to Twitter to broadcast the inner workings of his mind to the women, men, and children of Planet Earth. And sometimes what he types isn't quite what he intends . . . so despite being the leader of the free world, he deletes the tweet and tries again.
But the longer Trump is in the White House and the more pressure that is placed on the former real estate developer and reality TV host, the more these flubs seem to be happening. So much so that it's starting to feel an awful lot like the real thorn in Trump's side isn't the media or the much-decried leaks in his revolving-door White House - it's the grammar school-level concept of the homophone. Defined by Merriam-Webster as "one of two or more words pronounced alike but different in meaning or derivation or spelling (such as the words to, too, and two)," homophones also happen to be the one thing that will never, ever be caught by a standard spellcheck program. As multiple spellings are correct, it wholly falls on the author of a sentence to ensure that the correct spelling is employed . . . and for Trump, that seems to be a bit too much of an ask.
While a mistake of this kind can absolutely be chalked up to human nature when it happens a couple of times, it's an alarming indication of an individual's mental state when it happens on a near-weekly basis. And it's not just homophones, either, or words like "covfefe" or "tapp." It runs over to a "this is how it sounds, so that must be how it's spelled" mindset, one that's solely based on acting on impulse, which is frankly inexplicable for someone who has ready access to the nuclear codes. The most Pavlovian part of the whole thing, though, is the fact that we're talking about someone who came from a public-facing life and has been under scrutiny for years. And yet, in all that time, he has never learned to revise his own thoughts before word-vomiting into the internet.
It's also very telling of a deeper, darker insecurity that drives the president to act in such impetuous ways. And while the Goldwater Rule bars us from having someone with professional psychoanalytical abilities weigh in, these erratic outbursts that aren't kept in check by a self-editing id are enough to make the average individual wonder if an impulsive ego can override the boundaries of the rules our Founding Fathers put forth.
As it stands, though, there isn't much recourse for sending a typo-ridden tweet. The president's behavior warrants close attention, but for now the only thing we can do is point at the tweets and laugh at the most powerful man in the world being baffled by homophones. And while Trump may have removed a lot of the evidence of his aversion to self-editing, the internet is rich with screenshots and analysis that will ensure that gone will never be forgotten. Behold some of our president's greatest (spelling) hits.

The Internet Made the Best Picture Envelope Into a Meme Because It Has Zero Chill
While the Oscars are known for giving awards to unlikely winners, no one saw the biggest snafu to happen in its history coming: Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty announcing the wrong winner, La La Land, for best picture. As cast and crew members were giving their acceptance speeches, La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz realized the mistake and held up the correct envelope showing that Moonlight actually won. The internet couldn't believe the error and knew the only way to take it in stride: to meme the moment. Ahead, check out the funniest memes of Horowitz holding up the best picture envelope, and then catch up on what Barry Jenkins and Mahershala Ali had to say about the win.
This Student Wrote 127 Pages in Response to an Infuriating Catholic School Assignment
I go to a Catholic high school, and they wanted me to write a paper on why gay marriage is "wrong and dangerous", so instead I wrote this 127 page paper. from lgbt
One Catholic high school student in Missouri is going viral for sharing the details of their shocking religion class assignment - along with the epic way they responded to it.
Reddit user averagesmurf recently shared the above photo, showing the cover of their latest morality class assignment. The student's teacher allegedly assigned the high school students to write a paper about why gay marriage is "wrong and dangerous," but this teen had a little something different up their sleeve. Instead, they cranked out a whopping 127 pages about why gay marriage is actually "fabulous," backed up with Bible references and historical quotes.
The post garnered more than 900 comments from people who offered up both positive and negative reactions. Some praised the student's work, with one user saying, "Good job :) hope you got an A." Yet others were suspicious that the photo was a fluke, with another user writing, "This smells like bullsh*t to me, 127 pages is stupidly long and I doubt any school would assign an essay about the dangers of gay marriage."
So, the student shared a few now-deleted snapshots of supposed pages from the assignment to prove its validity. The typed pages incorporate multiple Bible quotes and citations to support the student's argument that gay marriage should not be frowned upon by the Church. On top of that, the student offered up an in-depth explanation of what the assignment entailed.
Though we may not know for sure whether this student's assignment was real, we sure hope it is, because it looks like some people in this world still need to broaden their viewpoint on this hot topic.
How Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Lives on Through the Fight For Civil Rights
On April 4, 1968, America lost civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Fifty years after his death, at a time when Dr. King would have been 89, his message is still being held close to heart - and is still being fought for.
At the time of Dr. King's death in Memphis, TN, unrest broke out in response to the assassination. Dr. King was in Memphis in anticipation of a march he was to lead, one that his attorneys were fighting for in federal court, one that was unequivocally supposed to be orderly and peaceful. He was killed at the Lorraine Hotel in the company of musician Ben Branch and Rev. Jesse Jackson, preparing to depart for dinner.
In the time that has elapsed since that fateful April day, there are things that have and have not changed in America. "Dr. King bequeathed African-Americans the will to resist and the right to vote," Rev. Jesse Jackson recently wrote in The New York Times, reflecting on Dr. King's death and highlighting current activism against hate. "Five decades ago, a segregationist governor, George Wallace, peddled hate and division in reaction to the civil rights movement. Today, it is the president himself who is inciting anguish, bigotry and fear."
Similarly, former president Barack Obama sat down with civil rights activist Rep. John Lewis to reflect on Dr. King's life and legacy. The conversation was a part of a roundtable at the My Brother's Keeper Alliance with students in Washington, DC, in the hopes of inspiring future leaders. "Being on the right side of history isn't always possible," Obama said. "And it isn't always easy . . . You don't know whether your labors will deliver." Lewis continued his thought, noting that, "when you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, you have a moral obligation to do something, to say something."
"Dr. King inspired us to do just that," Lewis said.
A tension in Dr. King's narrative, because he is remembered both as a freedom fighter as well as an outlaw, and it's a fact that resonates sharply in a deeply divided contemporary America, with parallel activism taking place today. While rumors that Dr. King's death was orchestrated by the FBI or Ku Klux Klan continue to roil (unproven), the root of these stories underscore the sanitation of the activist's legacy: Dr. King was seen as unAmerican and a "danger" to the nation set against the unpopularity of civil rights movement at the time. This sentiment has been noted as extremely similar to comments made by critics of Black Lives Matter, today.
Today, on the anniversary of his death, Dr. King is being celebrated far and wide by sometimes antithetical public figures. Memorials and inspirational quotes are swirling on and offline, coming from a mix of public figures from Fr. James Martin to Qasim Rashid, former vice president Joe Biden to Vice President Mike Pence, Rep. Kamala Harris to Gov. Mike Huckabee, RuPaul to Piers Morgan.
Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the 50th anniversary of his assassination. Earlier this year I spoke about Dr. King's legacy of justice and peace, and his impact on uniting Americans. #MLK50 Proclamation: https://t.co/XXtPO0VX5A pic.twitter.com/SH0esMSyMT
- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 4, 2018
President Donald Trump added his voice to the mix by sharing a video on Twitter regarding Dr. King's work uniting Americans. "On this cherished day, we honor the memory of Rev. King," Trump said. "We rededicate ourselves to a glorious future where every American from every walk of life can live free from fear, liberated from hatred, and uplifted by boundless love for their fellow citizens."
It's a far cry from the last time Trump honored Dr. King. During the annual MLK Day Proclamation on Jan. 12 - he refused to answer questions regarding comments made the day before in which he referred to some African and Caribbean nations as "sh*thole countries." It also should be noted that Trump once violated the Fair Housing Act by refusing to provide housing to black tenants in the 1970s.
Regardless of the current administration, Dr. King's legacy continues to be heard and held dear in America - and his words will never be forgotten, the words that will continue to inspire generations of Americans for decades (if not centuries) to come.
Flamethrowers, Cassette Players, and Fake Teeth: Trump's Utterly Bizarre Choices For Chinese Import Tariff Hike
President Donald Trump made it to the highest office in the land by promising a slew of haughty (and in some cases, damn near impossible) policy changes, but while the vast majority have yet to materialize, the looming midterm elections appear to have kicked the administration into overdrive on getting at least something to show for the year-and-change since he became POTUS. As a result, on April 3 we saw two incredibly inadvisable moves from the White House: first, Trump announced a plan to send the National Guard to the Mexican border as a stopgap for his yet-to-be-realized wall, and second, he announced a tariff would be imposed on a staggering $50 billion worth of Chinese imports, presumably to save face with regards to the trade practices the president has frequently deemed "unfair."
Here's the thing about those Chinese imports, though: there are a lot of utterly bizarre products in the 45-page document that will soon face a 25-percent hike in taxes. And while the vast majority of the list does indeed make sense, we couldn't help but point out some of the most inexplicable line entries that have left us scratching our heads.
Behold:
- Medicaments containing vitamin B12 synthesized from aromatic or mod. Aromatic compounds, in dosage form or packed for retail
- Artificial parts of the body (other than artificial joints) and parts and accessories thereof, nesoi
- Nuclear reactors
- Bakery ovens, including biscuit ovens
- Dishwashing machines of the household type
- Fire extinguishers, whether or not charged
- Snowplows and snowblowers
- Brewery machinery, nesi
- Cash registers
- Cassette players (non-recording), nesoi
- Black and white or other monochrome video projectors
- Balloons, dirigibles and non-powered aircraft, gliders and hang gliders
- Lasers, other than laser diodes
- Catheters, cannulae and the like nesi, used in medical, surgical, dental or veterinary sciences, and parts and accessories thereof
- Dental cements and other dental fillings; bone reconstruction cements
- Rocket launchers; flame-throwers; grenade launchers; torpedo tubes and similar projectors
- Hearing aids, excluding parts and accessories thereof
At this stage it's unclear how increasing the cost of nuclear reactors, flame-throwers, and hang gliders is going to aid the White House with any type of messaging – but what is clear is that China is willing to go tit-for-tat when it comes to laying down the law. The country was quick toissue a counter-proposal which includes several items that hit a little closer to home for US citizens than, say, cassette players: soybeans, cars, and chemicals.
While this may bring us one step closer to a full-on trade war with China, all is not lost – these are not official declarations just yet. There are still 60 days in which comments can be made before the public hearing takes place, so if you are feeling really outraged by the idea that biscuit ovens will soon skyrocket in price, the Office of the US Trade Representative encourages individuals to head on over to the public docket and speak their minds.
Naturally, as of the time of publication – at 12:00 p.m. ET, on April 4 – you'll get a page error.
Here's What Those Russian Facebook Ads We've Heard So Much About Actually Look Like
Thanks to ongoing public hearings in Washington DC centered on Russia's social media meddling during the 2016 election, we finally have our first real look at what it is that Vladimir Putin's fabled troll farms were actually doing. The bad news? Much of what was provided as evidence by the House Intelligence Committee on Nov. 1 is not that far off from what we've come to expect from overzealous Americans on all sides of the political spectrum.
To be clear, only a sampling of the more than 3,000 ads that were purchased in the lead-up to the election have been shared with the public so far. But what is immediately evident to any regular Facebook user is that outside of some very, very misused colloquialisms and a few bizarre cultural interpretations, the extent to which the Russian infiltrators were able to successfully manipulate social tensions is staggering. Tackling everything from Black Lives Matter to gun policy to Islam, the level of sophistication and mimicry present is incredibly hard to wrap your head around, especially when put against a background of fringe voices that are louder now than ever.
Ahead, we've pulled together many of the images released by Congress as evidence for easy viewing. But as California Senator Dianne Feinstein said during the hearings, "What we're talking about is a cataclysmic change. What we're talking about is the beginning of cyberwarfare. What we're talking about is a major foreign power with sophistication and ability to involve themselves in a presidential election and sow conflict and discontent all over this country. We are not going to go away, gentlemen. And this is a very big deal."
From where we stand, with nearly 126 million Americans having seen these downright inflammatory posts and not having thought anything of it - well, we really couldn't agree more. And perhaps being able to put some tangible imagery behind the amorphous idea of Russian meddling will make us all think twice before we scroll past an image such as the ones ahead on any of our social feeds ever again.
A Senator Suggested the Death Penalty For Women Who Get Abortions, and There Are Just No Words
Posted by Nonini for Idaho Lt. Governor on Sunday, October 15, 2017
A congressman is facing some well-earned backlash after a recent statement about abortion shocked even his most pro-life supporters. Idaho Senator Bob Nonini is currently running in the state's lieutenant governor race, and during a panel hosted by CrossPolitic on April 2, Nonini suggested the death penalty should be considered as punishment for women who have an abortion.
"There should be no abortion, and anyone who has an abortion should pay," the senator said according to the Associated Press. When moderators pressed him on the matter and asked if he considered the death penalty a possible punishment, Nonini reportedly nodded in agreement.
After news of his controversial statement broke, Nonini and his campaign seemed to be scrambling. Now, Nonini is claiming he never nodded in agreement to the suggestion of the death penalty – but is maintaining his staunchly pro-life stance. "Since abortion is murder, I believe we should consider penalties for individuals involved in these procedures," Nonini said in a statement following the panel.
Ultimately, the senator suggested there was a flaw in the fact that women have never been prosecuted for having abortions. "Prosecutions have always been focused on the abortionist," he said. Adding, "There is no way a woman would go to jail let alone face the death penalty. The statute alone, the threat of prosecution, would dramatically reduce abortion. That is my goal."
This 1 Old Trump Tweet Contradicts Everything He's Now Saying About the NFL
Donald Trump is a man of many words tweets, and more often than not, the thoughts he shares with his Twitter audience tend to directly contradict the tweets he's sent in the past. From tweets about the Oscars, to criticism of Barack Obama's handling of Hurricane Sandy, and just about everything in between, President Trump's past has come back to bite him. The latest incident? The National Football League.
Back in 2013, when then-President Obama urged the Washington Redskins to change the team name to something that didn't offend Native Americans, Trump had some thoughts. He tweeted that "our country has far bigger problems" and that the president should "FOCUS on them, not nonsense."
President should not be telling the Washington Redskins to change their name-our country has far bigger problems! FOCUS on them, not nonsense
- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 8, 2013
Now, just four years later, we find ourselves saying the exact same thing to Trump - and if we're being honest, the "far bigger problems" in hand seem a lot worse now than in 2013. The week of, Trump condemned Colin Kaepernick and the NFL players who have taken a knee during the national anthem to protest racism and police brutality across the country. He spent three full days tweeting about athletes "disrespecting our country or our flag," while our country faces the threat of a nuclear war with North Korea - what we'd qualify as a "far bigger problem."
If NFL fans refuse to go to games until players stop disrespecting our Flag & Country, you will see change take place fast. Fire or suspend!
- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 24, 2017
...NFL attendance and ratings are WAY DOWN. Boring games yes, but many stay away because they love our country. League should back U.S.
- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 24, 2017
Great solidarity for our National Anthem and for our Country. Standing with locked arms is good, kneeling is not acceptable. Bad ratings!
- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 24, 2017
The issue of kneeling has nothing to do with race. It is about respect for our Country, Flag and National Anthem. NFL must respect this!
- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 25, 2017
Looks like we have yet another set of tweets to add to the Presidential Flip Flops line of contradictory Trump tweets.
People Are Creating the Most Incredible Dances . . . to the Nostalgic Wii Theme Song
If you played video games growing up, then there are probably a few theme songs that can send you right back to the good ol' days in just a few bars. Who could ever forget the iconic score to Legend of Zelda, or even the elevator music that plays while you build your home on Sims? But there is one tune in particular that is capable of inspiring the most earnest nostalgia in the hearts of millennials: the Wii theme song that plays in the background of the Mii Channel. And while it's not exactly a "lit" track that inspires you to get up and dance, people are doing their damnedest.
In order to prove their ability to dance to even the most basic song, people on Instagram have turned the simple theme into a dance challenge: #TheWiiChallenge. Started by So You Think You Can Dance season 13 winner Kida the Great, the challenge is simple: turn the nostalgic video game theme song into a dance worthy of sharing with the world. Somehow, people are nailing it, too! Check out some of these surprisingly great examples of dancers channeling their inner Mii, then blow the dust off your Wii and let the music flow through you.
The 1 Character Related to Sirius Black That We Didn't See Coming at All
Harry Potter fans are known to constantly uncover new theories and details in the series. All it takes is one session of rereading a book and suddenly a new link between characters is clear. It's probably how one Reddit user discovered the possibility that Sirius Black's great-great-uncle might be Elphias Doge.
Posted by Reddit user Obversa, the theory involves a lot of history and knowledge of the Harry Potter universe. It boils down to three main points:
- Professor Dumbledore and Phineas Nigellus Black's second son, Phineas Black Jr., were good friends during their time at Hogwarts.
- The relationship between Phineas Nigellus Black Sr. and Dumbledore is both friendly and hostile, because Black Sr. didn't approve of his friendship with his son Black Jr.
- Dumbledore's relationship with Sirius Black was similar to what he had with Black Jr. And Sirius's unfriendly relationship with the portrait of Black Sr. is because Black Sr. sees Sirius repeating the same "mistakes" as Black Jr.
How does Black Jr. somehow become Elphias Doge? Well, based on when Dumbledore went to Hogwarts and the timing of when Black Jr. was born, they would've gone to the school at the same time. It was their friendship and Dumbledore's influence over Doge on Muggle-born rights that drove Black Sr. to disown him as his son. And though Doge is a pureblood, there's no record of his family in Harry Potter Limited Edition - A Guide to the Graphic Arts Department: Posters, Prints, and Publications from the Harry Potter Films, meaning perhaps he is a pureblood - but of another family, the Black family.
Still curious to fully understand how Doge and Sirius Black are related? Read the full theory below.
[Harry Potter] Elphias Doge is none other than Phineas Black [Jr.], the disowned great-great-uncle of Sirius Black. Thus, he is / was the last remaining Black. from FanTheories
The Viral Story of an Abandoned Dog Found in a Garbage Bag Will Make Your Heart Cry
Malissa Sergent Lewis was driving through her hometown of Harlan, KY, when she noticed a black garbage bag moving along the side of the road. Curious, Lewis went to inspect the bag only to find an abandoned puppy inside of it. Though the puppy had a collar, it didn't have a tag.
In an interview with The Dodo, Lewis explained the unexpected and horrifying discovery. "I could hardly wrap my mind around that," she said. "Something was alive in that bag, and I just knew I had to get whatever it was out." As one might imagine, the dog was relieved to be found. "As soon as I opened it up, and he saw light, he just started wagging his tail. He knew he was OK," she said.
Lewis has yet to figure out the circumstances surrounding the dog's abandonment, but investigators are reportedly looking into it. Lewis did share the miraculous story on Facebook in a series of videos that have gone viral with close to 20,000 shares. Accompanying the videos is a caption that states, "If this is your puppy, let me know. If you are the scoundrel who put it in a garbage bag and tossed it on the side of the road . . . you're a sicko."
Lewis is currently trying to find a permanent home for the dog, but she will continue to foster it until that happens. Perhaps one of those 900,000 viewers might be interested?
Solve the Brain-Teaser That Is Driving People on Facebook Insane
Hmm... Can you solve this?
I honestly have NO clue! I hope you guys can tell me ☆ SHARE and see if your friends Can! ☆
FOLLOW ME! ☺☺☺
Posted by Lisa Woelke on Friday, January 29, 2016
Facebook user Lisa Woelke shared a brain-teaser that has been driving the Internet nuts. The post - which has been shared by more than 170,000 users - depicts a math equation with fruit items in lieu of numbers. For example, it can be deduced from the first line that one apple is equivalent to the number 10. Harmless enough, right? Wrong.
The most common answer for the remaining final line was 16 - and you shouldn't be discouraged if that's the answer you arrived at . . . it just isn't the correct one. The final answer is actually 14. You might be asking yourself, "What the what?" as you ponder the degeneration of your math skills, but it's OK. We can work through this together.
So yes, one apple equals 10, one banana bunch equals four, and the coconuts equal two. However, the final line alters the coconuts and bananas so that they are each missing one, respectively. In the case of the last line, there is only one coconut - equaling one - and three bananas in the bunch, which equal three. So one apple (10) plus one coconut (one) and three bananas (three) equal 14. Voilà!
Forget Trump, Let's Just Look at Pictures of 3 Former Presidents Watching Golf Together Forever
Former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton came together for the Presidents Cup at Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey, and spoiler alert, THERE ARE PHOTOS.
In what can only be described as a welcome respite from the normal news cycle of increasingly frantic crazy, on Sept. 28, our three most recent presidents got together to watch some golf. To be clear, they weren't playing golf - like a certain other president we know - but Clinton, Obama, and Bush were all present for the opening round of the four-day event, which features the best male golfers from the US facing off against the most lauded international figures in the sport.
Regardless of how you feel about each of our last three presidents, it's hard not to look back fondly at the times that once were - so ahead, bask in the glory of the most nostalgic set of photos you'll see all day. And be sure to read through to the end for a bonus shot of one Barack Obama and a very well-known fan.
The Shooting at YouTube HQ Was the 58th Mass Shooting of 2018
On April 3, an active shooter opened fire at YouTube's San Bruno headquarters, injuring three individuals and leaving one victim in critical condition.
The events began to unfold at 1 p.m., and according to YouTube employees who were present during the attack, it was initially mistaken for a fire drill - the building's alarm sounded, signaling employees to evacuate. By 2 p.m., President Donald Trump had been notified and briefed on the attack, after which he tweeted out the requisite "thoughts and prayers" response to the tragedy. The shooter, San Diego resident Nasim Najafi Aghdam, took her own life at the scene.

Aghdam was an aspiring YouTuber, but had become a vocal critic of the platform after it demonitized her videos. She expressed beliefs that YouTube was filtering her content and discriminating against her, comparing their "censorship" tactics to that of Hitler. Aghdam was a noted vegan and animal rights activist known for making videos on these subjects, as well as in the fitness space.
These issues were raised to police by Aghdam's family; her brother shared with local news outlets that their family had warned police of potential misbehavior or harm after Aghdam stopped answering her phone and reportedly had driven from San Diego to Mountain View, near the YouTube headquarters. Police reportedly found Aghdam at 2 a.m. on April 3, reporting to her family that the situation was "under control." Hours later, she opened fire at YouTube. Her family is unclear as to how she acquired a gun and noted that she would have celebrated her 38th birthday the following day, taking her own life on the eve of her birth.

The tragedy has been received in myriad ways. Sandar Pichai, the CEO of YouTube parent company Google, sent a late afternoon tweet that the situation was being monitored and that the victims and their families would get the support they needed. Executives ranging from Tim Cook of Apple to Jeff Bezos of Amazon have similarly expressed their condolences.
Many in and out of tech have already pivoted the conversation to the ongoing debate regarding gun control. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey most notably scolded Trump for his "thoughts and prayers" by amplifying the March Of Our Lives cause. Nancy Pelosi, who represents the San Francisco area, expressed the need for real action on guns while YouTube stars like Jake Paul reiterated this, expressing that "we need change...now!"
Meanwhile, Donald Trump Jr. has reportedly been liking tweets that co-opt Aghdam as an unhinged, far left activist.
While further details regarding the victims and attacker are developing, the shooting at YouTube is the 58th mass shooting of 2018. The April 3 tragedy is still being processed and analyzed by police, but will surely add to the momentum of action and activism which arose in the wake of the Parkland shooting less than two months earlier.
1 Connection Between Dumbledore's Army and the Marauders You Probably Missed
Throughout the Harry Potter series, the connections between Harry and his parents are made abundantly clear; Harry and his dad, James, look so similar that they're often mistaken for one another, and Harry picks up his dad's knack for Quidditch naturally. It's frequently mentioned that Harry has his mother Lily's eyes, and his fierce, untiring defense of what's right is also something he inherits from her.
But there are other similarities between the Potters' generation and their son's friend group, many of which are subtle . . . yet when articulated, the connections between the Marauders and Dumbledore's Army are striking. In a now-viral post, Tumblr user cameralinz connects several key characters in the series to older generation counterparts.
In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Sirius tells Harry: "Anyway, I suppose you're the young ones now." The theory reflects this sentiment, suggesting that each of the major characters in Harry's friend group is an opportunity to redeem the losses or failings of the previous generation.
"Anyway, I suppose you're the young ones now."
According to the theory, Neville Longbottom represents what Peter Pettigrew could have been if he'd made better choices. In this same vein, Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, and Luna also act as foils to other members of the Marauders-era Hogwarts class.
But in a more fleshed-out reply to the theory, another Tumblr user challenges the initial character pairings . . . and we're inclined to agree.

Per this alternate reading, Harry and his friend correspond to different Marauders. In a shocking twist that would surely disturb each of them, Neville actually plays foil to his least favorite teacher, Severus Snape. Why? They each struggle to live up to their families' respective legacy before finding their place among a core group of friends and allies in young adulthood. Snape falls in with the wrong crowd, while Neville chooses a better crew of friends.
Similarly, Ron plays foil to a character that he hates: Peter Pettigrew. Overshadowed, jealous, and insecure in his social standing, Ron displays what Peter could have been if he had overcome his insecurities and remained loyal to his friends.
Ron displays what Peter could have been if he had overcome his insecurities and remained loyal to his friends.
Hermione, who found Sirius Black irresponsible albeit charming, acts as his generational foil: they each fiercely love their chosen families, and struggle with politics related to their blood status.
Luna and Remus Lupin are connected through their outsider status, and their knowledge of fringe magical communities. While each are often socially isolated and ridiculed because of who they are, Luna is different than Lupin due to her confidence and self-acceptance. (On another note: they both have names related to the moon!)
The theory goes on to connect Ginny with confident, sometimes-showoffish James Potter, and Harry to his muggle-raised, talented mother, Lily. The characters are undeniable in their similarities, and might even make you feel silly for not having noticed before.
So, do you agree with this assessment of the Marauders and their Dumbledore's Army counterparts? Let us know in the comments whether you buy into this version of J.K. Rowling's magical series!
Here's Kate Middleton, Casual as Ever, Doing Some Grocery Shopping Before Her Third Baby Arrives
Before Kate Middleton was a member of Britain's most famous family, she was just a totally normal girl who played sports, lived in a London apartment with her younger sister, Pippa, and shopped at Waitrose supermarket like everybody else. Well, some things never change!
On Monday, Kate was spotted picking up some groceries at a Waitrose supermarket in Swaffham, UK. The duchess took a spin around the store with her cart and was accompanied by her metropolitan police protection officer, who stood aside and kept an eye on her as she loaded her reusable bags into her car. Kate is likely stocking up for her family, which is set to expand very soon - Kate is currently pregnant with her third child - not that it's slowed her down at all - and is rumored to be giving birth in the next couple of weeks.
Despite Kate being, you know, literal royalty, this actually isn't the first time we've gotten a glimpse of her doing a round of regular-person chores: back in 2013, just a few weeks after giving birth to Prince George, Kate was seen shopping at her local market on the island of Anglesey, where she and Prince William spent time as a new family of three. The day before her shopping trip, Kate was all dressed up for Easter church service with William at St. George's Chapel, where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will tie the knot next month.
My Longtime Pretend Boyfriend Chris Pine Is Dating a Woman That Is Not Me, but I'm Totally Fine

Chris Pine is reportedly off the market, and, no, I'm not having a hard time at all! The Wrinkle in Time actor and keeper of my heart is said to be dating British actress Annabelle Wallis, who is beautiful, blonde, and most devastatingly, not me. According to Us Weekly, a romance recently blossomed between the two stars (behind my back, I'd like to add).
"She was seeing someone else when they met," Us reports. "They kept it casual for the beginning. Chris was very attentive and wooed her to get her attention away from the other guy. Annabelle is totally Chris's type," the source said, even going so far to add that they have "vacationed in Hawaii together." That's such a coincidence; I love Hawaii. The two were also spotted arriving at Heathrow airport in London on March 29, which happens to BE MY BIRTHDAY. (Just kidding, it's not).

Annabelle, 33, is best known for her roles in Peaky Blinders, The Mummy, and X-Men: First Class. She's previously been linked to James Rousseau and Chris Martin, whom she dated in 2015 after his split from Jennifer Lawrence. Meanwhile, Chris has romanced a long list of women who aren't me, including Zoë Kravitz and Olivia Munn.
They say that if you love something you should set it free, and if it comes back to you, it's meant to be yours. I'll be waiting, Christopher!
Meghan Markle's Dad Doing Some Light Research on England Is the Sweetest Thing We've Seen All Day
Thomas Markle is not your average father of the bride. While most dads simply try on their tuxedos and write a speech or two, Meghan Markle's father has a bit more work to do before handing her off to the royal family - and it's melting our pretty little plebeian hearts. Last week, the retired Emmy-winning lighting director was seen at a Starbucks in Rosarito, Mexico, reading a book titled Images of Britain: A Pictorial Journey Through History. So what if it's a picture book? Thomas is looking to impress his future in-laws with cultural knowledge and that alone is so damn pure. Read on to see the photos and check out everything we know about Meghan and Prince Harry's wedding before Thomas walks her down the aisle on May 19.
John Krasinski Shares the Cringeworthy Moment He Realized He "Married Up"
John Krasinski continues to dole out compliments for his lovely wife Emily Blunt - even if it's at his own expense. While promoting the pair's new horror film A Quiet Place, the 38-year-old actor appeared on The Tonight Show and shared a cringeworthy anecdote about a recent interaction that made him realize he really "married up."
As the audience cheered at the mere mention of Emily's name, John joked, "That reaction means I married up, and don't I know it." As host Jimmy Fallon kindly protested, John added, "Please, they don't have to tell me - the customs agent in London did." As it turns out, John was recently going through customs when the agent asked him about his profession and who he was visiting. The interaction that followed might honestly make you want to crawl into a hole on John's behalf.
While John is out here joking that he married someone out of his league, Emily is claiming that he's the more well-liked parent in their family of four. Ah, these two!
John Krasinski Addressed the Internet's Most Pressing Questions, and Things Got Pretty Personal

The questions ranged from facts about his childhood to his friendships with the cast of The Office. Some people were even curious about whether he was married to his former costar Jenna Fischer IRL. Obviously, they haven't heard how obsessed John is with his actual real-life wife, Emily Blunt. The Moulin Rouge! Musical Has Cast Its Satine and Christian - Prepare to Fall in Love
Come what may, we're probably going to be obsessed with the upcoming musical adaptation of Musical Rouge! - but it doesn't hurt that it officially has a stellar cast. The news originally broke in 2016 that Baz Luhrmann's beloved 2001 film starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor was getting the stage treatment. Now, it's been revealed that Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo have been cast as Christian and Satine, respectively.
You might recognize Tveit as Gossip Girl's Tripp van der Bilt, but he's also an established theater actor who's appeared in Wicked, Rent, and Catch Me If You Can. He also portrayed Enjolras in the 2012 film adaptation of Les Misérables. Olivo has previously appeared in In the Heights, Hair, and the Chicago production of Hamilton. In 2009, she even won a Tony Award for her portrayal Anita in West Side Story. In other words? They're the perfect choice to portray the passionate, ill-fated Parisian lovers.
If you're wondering when Moulin Rouge! The Musical is going to hit Broadway, you have a bit of a wait. The production will first debut at Boston's Emerson Colonial Theatre on June 27 and will run until Aug. 5. Then, it is expected to come to Broadway, although no additional dates or details have been announced yet. In the meantime, why not brush up on the movie's excellent soundtrack?
Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green Pack on the PDA as They Return to the Place They Got Married
Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green recently took a trip down memory lane as they returned to the place where they got married in June 2010. The couple looked like two honeymooners as they visited Kailua Kona in Hawaii on March 28. While Megan showed off her toned figure in a striped bikini, her husband put his numerous tattoos on display as he went shirtless and sported gray swim trunks. The two looked especially lovey-dovey as they walked hand in hand on the beach and sneaked in a few kisses in the water. Seriously, it's like a Nicholas Sparks movie come to life.
The pair has certainly had a complicated relationship over the years. The two first met on the set of Hope & Faith in 2004 - when Brian was 30 and Megan was 18 - and began privately dating shortly after. After getting engaged, breaking up, and getting back together again, the two secretly tied the knot in 2010 during an intimate ceremony in Hawaii, with only Brian's son Kassius, from his previous marriage to Vanessa Marcil, in attendance.
They welcomed their oldest son Noah in September 2012 and their second son Bodhi in February 2014. Though Megan filed for divorce a year later, those plans were later put on hold when she became pregnant with their third child in 2016. Since welcoming their son Journey, Megan and Brian have resumed their romance, and by the looks of it are happier than ever. See more pictures of their Hawaiian vacation below.
After 10 Years of Marriage, Jay Z and Beyoncé Are Still Crazy in Love

Like any other couple, Beyoncé and JAY-Z have weathered storms and come out on the other side, seemingly stronger than ever. They're ringing in their tenth wedding anniversary and even embarking on another joint tour later this year. To celebrate their milestone, we're looking back on their cutest pictures over the years.
This Female-Directed Music Video About Sexual Harassment Is Sparking a Powerful Conversation
Leon Bridges is a man with a vision. The gospel and soul singer continues to impress audiences and the music industry with his confessional lyrics and modern beats that simultaneously have the power to transport listeners back in time. But it's Bridges's most recent music video for the single "Bad Bad News" that's really striking a chord with women specifically.
The video stars body-positivity activist and plus-size model Paloma Elsesser, whose character walks out of a subway terminal late at night, dressed in a red trench coat, only to find herself catcalled by a stranger. Elsesser, who is compelled to find her catcaller, searches the streets of New York, incorporating dance moves into her journey as she looks for the person who wronged her.
Elsesser's quest is caught through alluring shots of her dancing under the dusty street lights of the city as she makes her way past neon signs displayed on store windows. When Elsesser finally addresses the man who catcalled her, she leans her head on his chest and twirls around, making sure he sees her face clearly, silently making the point that she is human and that her body is her own.
This powerful execution wouldn't be what it is without Bridges's haunting chords, but also without the video's director, Natalie Rae, who elegantly brings Leon's vision to life. During a recent conversation with Rae, she told us that the video was inspired by the #MeToo movement and should be seen as a victory song - an anthem for women who are taking back their power.
"The chorus of the song is 'I was told I was born to lose, but I made a good, good thing outta bad news,'" Rae explained. "No one has made a better thing out of bad news more than women have around #MeToo last year."

This interpretation especially resonated with Elsesser, who, according to Rae, saw her own personal run-ins with catcalling and sexual harassment reflected in "Bad Bad News." Elsesser told Rae that having grown up with curves, there was this flood of attention that she didn't know how to handle at a young age, causing her confusion and self-doubt. She's since taken these experiences and insecurities and turned them into pride and body positivity, something that's helped propel her plus-size modeling career and social media presence.
"She's certainly taken her bad news and turned it into a good thing," Rae said.
For Bridges, "Bad Bad News" is his love letter to women everywhere. According to Rae, the song and video symbolize the support and solidarity between men and women during this political shift. "This was an inspiration for Leon to try [to] propel the moment in a video that says, 'I'm listening, and I'll follow your footsteps,'" she added.
While there is no verbal apology from Elsesser's catcaller, you can see the expression on his face slowly turn to understanding, and finally shame, as Elsesser forces him to see her for who she is: not a victim, but a human being.
Elizabeth Olsen on Rumors She'll Play Michelle in Fuller House: "What Is Wrong With People?"
Fuller House is still going strong at Netflix with three seasons under its belt so far, but there's still a little something missing from the family sitcom: Michelle Tanner. While key characters such as D.J. (Candace Cameron Bure), Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin), Kimmy (Andrea Barber), and even Uncle Jesse (John Stamos) returned, the streaming giant wasn't able to woo Mary-Kate or Ashley Olsen back to reprise their roles as the youngest member of the Tanner family. Considering they now run a highly successful fashion empire, it wasn't surprising.
In 2016, Stamos revealed that the show had approached the Olsens' younger sister, Wind River actress Elizabeth Olsen, to play Michelle instead. "We actually went to . . . I don't think this has been talked about. I didn't do it, I think [executive producer] Jeff Franklin did. I said, 'Call the sister. Ask her,'" he dished to Andy Cohen on his Sirius XM show, Radio Andy. "We talked to her agent and her agent was like, 'Come on, she's not going to do that.' But we did call her agent."
According to Elizabeth Olsen, that's not at all what happened. The Avengers: Infinity War star called into the pop-culture podcast Everything Iconic with Danny Pellegrino, where she not only discussed the upcoming installment in the Marvel superhero franchise, but also touched on the rumors that she'd ever play Michelle.
"That [rumor] was weird. It was like, 'Leave me out of this!'" she said with a laugh. "This has nothing to do with me. What is wrong with people? Then I had to answer questions about it immediately after because I was doing press, and I had to be like, 'I don't know what anyone's talking about! Stop talking to me about this.'"
Welp, there you have it! Olsen, who also admitted she's yet to watch a single episode of Fuller House, definitely won't be portraying Michelle Tanner anytime soon. The show actually directly addressed her absence in season two during the Thanksgiving episode. After D.J. says a prayer before dinner, she mentions how she hopes her little sister will be able to join them next year. Jesse then breaks the fourth wall by looking into the camera and saying, "Come, it'll be fun! Have mercy!"
If Netflix doesn't opt to recast the role, it's clearly going to need a lot more than mercy to get any Olsen family member to return. Listen to Olsen's full (and pretty entertaining) interview with Pellegrino below, but fast-forward to the 23:30 mark to get to their Fuller House conversation.
The Duffer Brothers Say the Lawsuit Against Stranger Things Is "Completely Meritless"
Update: On April 4, Matt and Ross Duffer responded to the lawsuit, calling it "completely meritless." Alex Kohner, who is representing the brothers, says plaintiff Charlie Kessler "had no connection to the creation or development of Stranger Things. The Duffer brothers have neither seen Mr. Kessler's short film nor discussed any project with him. This is just an attempt to profit from other people's creativity and hard work."
Original Story: It seems like Stranger Things just can't catch a break these days. Just weeks after a former crew member accused creators Matt and Ross Duffer of verbal abuse, it seems the show is facing a major lawsuit. According to a report from Entertainment Weekly, a filmmaker named Charlie Kessler claims he came up with the original idea and concept for the show, and the Duffers stole the entire project out from under him. While the water in this area is murky - just refer to the whole Shape of Water controversy if you're skeptical - there may be some evidence to back up the claims.
In the lawsuit, Kessler refers to a short film he made called Montauk. The project premiered in 2012 and even earned accolades at the Hamptons International Film Festival. Kessler says he pitched a series to the Duffers in 2014; it would be called The Montauk Project. He even claims to have "presented materials" of his own that added color to the potential project.
Here's where things get dicey. Stranger Things was originally called Montauk when the Duffer brothers were pitching it around. The inspiration comes from a very real conspiracy theory called "the Montauk Project," which clearly connects to Kessler's alleged original idea. Eventually, the Duffers' Netflix show became Stranger Things, but a quick glance through the history of Montauk will prove that they kept a lot of the concepts from that original story.
The one thing that's working in the Duffers' favor is the fact that they took their show in a very different direction. Kessler's short film is set in the '70s, and it's very focused on the conspiracies surrounding Montauk. The Duffers moved Stranger Things to Indiana, added their own tweaks to the story, and set it in the '80s and stuffed it with pop culture references and homages. As the show moves into its third season, it's clear that it's quite a ways away from the events that happened in Montauk, but there's no denying the connection between the two projects. Whether the case will move forward remains to be seen.
