The Real Meaning Behind Cinco de Mayo, and Why Mexicans Don't Really Celebrate the Date
Another year, another Cinco de Mayo, another controversial statement, another stereotypical campaign, and another upset Mexican. I wish we could avoid this altogether and celebrate the day for what it really is; maybe learn a little bit about its history.
First things first, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day. In fact, as a Mexican-American with more than half of my family still living in Mexico, when the date comes around I don't think I receive a message even mentioning it from any of them. Every once in a while, though, a cousin finds humor in sending us screen shots of tweets or memes that mirror the ignorance in the celebration: "¿Ya se fijaron que hoy se celebra la independencia de México en los Estados Unidos? Jaja." Translation: "Did you see that the US is celebrating "Mexican Independence Day" today? LOL" Sounds about right.
So, when is Mexican Independence Day then? Sept. 16. And what do we celebrate on May 5? The Mexican army's 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla. While this victory didn't free Mexico from the French (this would happen months later), it did represent a great win for the country. Outnumbered and with poor supplies to fight the war, this triumph gave Mexicans hope, and the date evolved into a celebration of pride and culture. Yes, the country does acknowledge Cinco de Mayo, but it's mostly only celebrated in the state of Puebla and nowhere near as big or similar to how the festivities take place in the states. The $2 margaritas, two-for-one tacos, and wear-your-sombrero-to-work traditions will most likely only happen here on Cinco de Mayo, not south of the border.
Cinco de Mayo symbolizes unity and hope for the country, so how did the day evolved into what it has in the US? At some point, Mexican-Americans (or chicanos) adopted the day and began celebrating it. The idea was for them to promote their culture, history, vibrant colors, and musical diversity at a time where they felt oppressed. Now, instead, the meaning of Cinco de Mayo is a big confusion for most and a sales and marketing target for brands.
With Mexican roots, I take any opportunity to feel pride in my culture and ancestors.I do celebrate the day and victory. I will proudly congratulate my country with a tweet or Facebook post and maybe wear the rebozo, huipil, or embroidered shirt I purchased on my last trip to Jocotepec, Jalisco (that's where my family is from). However, I will also feel saddened by the fact that most won't acknowledge the date's symbolism appropriately. Instead, I will most likely have to hear incorrect statements made over and over again and plenty of "Yeah, I'm down for Drinko de Mayo and tequila shots! Viva Mexico!" from people mocking the commemoration and everything I stand for.
Cinco de Mayo isn't the only day that has evolved into an alcohol-driven fiesta, there are others. Will my frustration change anything? Probably not, but I do hope eventually, if we spread knowledge, we'll embody "culturas" for what they are; not only mine, but all. I am no one to pass up a two-for-one taco special, but it would be nice to come across a Cinco de Mayo where I don't have to hear of foolish behavior being broadcasted on national television for others to repeat or mindless comments allowing stereotypes to live and continue. Imagine, what would a Cinco de Mayo then look like? Sounds like a better holiday to me.

The 13 Reasons Why trailer for season two is here, and we can't stop talking about it. Attention: This Makeup Brush Cleaning Hack Will Change Your Life
Every now and then there comes a beauty hack that stops you in your tracks and makes you think, "Wow that's incredible!" and "Who in the world thought to even use it that way?" That's what I thought when I heard about using an art supply store staple to clean makeup brushes.
I was introduced to this non-beauty beauty tool, the Masters Brush Cleaner and Preserver ($7), by celebrity makeup artist Fiona Stiles, who features the product on her online store, Reed Clarke. Her store is a curated collection of her most beloved beauty finds, which she's picked during her travels around the world. According to her site, she says this is the only brush cleaner she's used since discovering it. "It gets every shade and hue out of every brush I own," she writes.
The Masters Brush Cleaner, which was created in 1979, is actually formulated to dissolve wet or dry paints - like acrylic, oil, metallic, and watercolor - from paintbrushes, and return them to their original shape and luster. According to one Amazon reviewer, "I trust all of my brushes to this brush cleaner, as does every other painter that I know. Art supplies are expensive, and preserving them properly protects and extends that investment. This cleaner has pulled some of my formerly 'ruined' brushes back from the edge." So, if you apply that same principle to makeup brushes, it makes complete sense it should translate from the art easel to your bathroom vanity.
The cleaner inside the jar is actually a solid compound, which has a faint lemon scent. It reminds me of raw coconut oil - when you push your fingers down inside it, the product melts and mushes a little bit. That firmness is what makes the cleaner so easy to use.
Here are the steps to cleaning your makeup brushes using the Masters Brush Cleaner:
- Wet the brush hairs so they are just damp enough to be able to loosen the grit off of them.
- Swirl the brush directly into the compound and work into a lather.
- Using the palm of your hand or a silicone makeup cleaning mat/mit, massage the brush hairs to work the makeup out fully.
- Rinse the brush under cold water, reshape the hairs, and lay it flat to dry on a towel.
- Dump out any excess liquid that's pooled inside the jar. And don't worry about accidentally dumping out the compound itself because it will remain in solid form, looking as clean as when you first opened the jar!
- Repeat all steps above as many times as needed for heavily soiled brushes (though I've found even my most-used foundation brush looked sparkling after only two cycles).
In total, this process takes me maybe two minutes max per brush. Typically, I look at cleaning my brushes as a dreaded chore, which means I usually put it off for way longer than I should (because who wants to spend time cleaning?). With this new method, however, I can clean any of my brushes as soon as I need to, and I've even had success cleaning my Beautyblender and other makeup sponges this way. Knowing how gentle the formula is, I'm confident using it on even my fanciest (read: expensive) brush, an Artis Oval 7. Oh, and the other good news: there's no scent left behind when the brush is fully dry. It will feel soft and restored.
The Master's Cleaner is available in four sizes: .25 oz, 1 oz, 2.5 oz, and 24 oz. I purchased the 1 oz size and thought it had just the right mouth opening for a majority of my brushes (for the fluffier ones, I simply pinched the hairs together and then dipped them inside the jar). It's tiny and lightweight enough that you can even consider throwing it in your travel makeup bag. Now if only I could figure out a way to make my entire brush collection portable, too!

What to Do When Your Baby Has a Fever
While you might get nervous the first time your baby or child has a fever, typically it's just your child's immune system responding to a mild infection or perhaps reacting to a recent shot. Babies, like adults, need fever as a way to fight and defend against infection, so don't panic when you feel that warm head!
Here's what you should do when your baby has a fever, and of course, always consult a physician before administering any medical care.
First, try giving your baby a lukewarm bath. Whatever you do, do not put your baby in a freezing cold bath, as this may cause your baby to shiver and then elevate his or her fever even higher. Second, dress the little one in lightweight clothes. Do not bundle up your baby! It may be tempting to, especially if your baby has the chills, but bundling up a baby with a fever may keep the fever from retreating or worse: make it go higher. Be mindful of your baby's environment. Is your baby's room stuffy or warmer than other parts of the house? Either move your baby to a cooler spot or turn on a fan.
Hydration
Whether it's breast milk, formula, or water (if your baby is old enough to drink water), keeping your baby hydrated is key. If you notice these signs, your little one may be dehydrated:
- None or very few wet diapers
- No tears! Your poor baby cannot produce tears.
- Dry mouth
Food
If your baby is on solid foods, you may notice that he or she is not very hungry. Don't force your little one to eat, but if he or she will, try popsicles, bread, crackers, and other bland foods.
Medication
Medications used for fevers include: acetaminophen, commonly known as Tylenol, and ibuprofen, commonly known as Advil. On occasion, your pediatrician may advise you to alternate between the two medicines. Here are some guidelines to administering medication:
- If your baby is under 3 months of age, call your pediatrician first before giving your little one any medicine.
- Do not give Aspirin to your child. It could cause Reye's syndrome, which affects the liver.
- If your baby is under 6 months of age, do not give your baby ibuprofen or medicines containing ibuprofen, such as Advil or Motrin.
- Know your baby's weight in order to give your child the right dosage of medication.
- Commonly, the dosing is as follows: acetaminophen every four to six hours; ibuprofen every six to eight hours.
- If your doctor recommends treating your baby with alternating doses of the two medicines, be sure to note doses and times and follow your doctor's advice.
- Keep in mind that ibuprofen may cause stomach irritation.
When to Call the Pediatrician
- If your baby is newborn to 2 months old and has a fever, call the doctor right away.
- If your baby is younger than 3 months and has a fever higher than 100.4°F (taken rectally).
- If your child is from 3 to 12 months old and has a fever of 102.2°F or higher.
- If your little one has other symptoms, such as a sore throat or vomiting.
- If your child has recently had a shot and has a fever.
- If your child's temperature skyrockets over 105°F.
- If your child has fevers that continue to come and go for more than a few days at a time.
Signs It's Time to Call 911 or Go to the ER
- If you have a child who cannot be awakened easily or seems disoriented.
- If your child is crying and you are unable to calm them down.
- If the baby's soft spot is sunken - the baby may be dehydrated.
- If your baby turns blue (lips, nails, or tongue).
- If your child is unable to walk or shows stiffness in his or her neck.
- If your child has a seizure (rolls eyes, twitches, vomits, etc.).

The Adorable Thing Kate and William Always Do When They Talk to George and Charlotte
Kate Middleton and Prince William have always had a soft spot for kids. Even before they became a family of five, it wasn't rare to see them interact with some of their youngest fans during official visits and royal tours, and they've since been able to put those skills to good use.
While the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge do get helped by a nanny, it doesn't stop them from being hands on parents to Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. The stranger's insult came out of nowhere. There I was, standing on the sidewalk with my 4-year-old and our family dog, minding our own business, when a (rather portly) gentleman walked by, looked down at Bagel, and said, "Looks like someone had a long Winter."
Um, excuse me? I couldn't help but glance at the man's own ample midsection as he bent over to pet our sweet girl, who, admittedly, has put on a few pounds over the past several months. OK, she has neck rolls and you can't really see her ribs anymore, but so what? Our dog has a more ample waistline, kind of like everyone else during the Winter months!
As I glared at the pooch-shaming stranger, I wanted to say, "I'm not going to apologize for my dog being overweight." Because it's freezing as (insert the bad word of your choice here) where we live, and I'll be damned if I'm going to parade up and down the street in a snowsuit just so Bagel can sniff every twig sticking out of the snow to find a place to pee. And it's not as if she's been dying to go outside and freeze her wet nose off, either. She'll look outside at the blizzard-like conditions and look back at me as if to say, "Really?"
I look back at her and assure her that once the sun comes out again, we'll take long and leisurely walks every day like we used to. She will trim down and be ready for Summer in no time! As long as we also cut down on the table scraps, right, Bagel?
Look, our dog is loved and cared for. Maybe a little too much these days. It's hard to say no to those puppy-dog eyes begging for a noodle or a few pita chips. With the wintry weather, it's also far more desirable to stay inside and cuddle instead of head out for our usual mile-long walk.
Bottom line: we always make sure she's happy and comfortable, and if that means putting on a few extra pounds sometimes, then so be it. Just like humans, dogs come in all shapes and sizes, and I would appreciate strangers not insulting my dog right to my face. There are so many stages new moms look forward to when they welcome their precious little baby into the world, but teething isn't one of them. When my children started teething, it was grueling for all of us. They were in pain, and I was in pain watching them hurt, knowing I couldn't do much to help. My firstborn was especially difficult for me because I had never experienced it before, and he was typically such a happy, content baby. But when those teeth started popping through around 6 months old, he couldn't sleep and seemed to cry all day long.
Turns out, he began teething right on target at 6 months. Although this is the average age, babies can begin teething as early as 3 months and as late as 1 year old. No matter when they start, your little one should have 20 primary teeth by the time they're 3.
The two bottom front teeth typically come first, followed by the upper front teeth. While this is the typical order, it doesn't always occur this way. If your baby gets different teeth in first, don't be alarmed. There are also many symptoms that come along with teething that shouldn't be a major cause for concern, including fussiness, sleeplessness, sore and pink gums, incessant drooling, and clinginess (just to name a few). The good news is that once those new teeth break through the gums, babies usually bounce back to their happy demeanors.
When your baby gets those first few teeth, it can feel like a delightful milestone has been met, whether that first tooth pops through as early as 3 months or they have to chew their first birthday cake with their gums. So although the process can be grueling, those toothy smiles are well worth it in the end.

A Woman Just Signed the Most Restrictive Antiabortion Bill in America Into Law
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds was surrounded by local schoolchildren and hounded by protesters on May 4 as she signed the state's "fetal heartbeat" act into law. The legislation - which has caused a major uproar among proponents of women's and reproductive rights - is the strictest abortion ban in the country.

The "fetal hearbeat" law would require physicians to perform an abdominal ultrasound on any patient seeking an abortion. If a fetal heartbeat can be detected, the procedure is illegal. Fetal heartbeats can often be heard at around six weeks of gestation - before many women even realize they are pregnant. In other words, the law would grant women less than two weeks after a first missed period to confirm their pregnancy with a doctor and make important, life-changing decisions about their bodies and futures.
The Iowa law echoes a rash of similar state-level antiabortion laws that have been passed and challenged in courts in recent years. These laws widely seek to erode women's ability to access abortion by establishing barriers to the procedure, whether by instituting mandatory waiting periods, challenging the medical licenses of abortion clinics, or even requiring doctors to provide patients seeking abortions with their professional résumés - in a specific font.
"I believe that all innocent life is precious and sacred," the Des Moines Register reports Reynolds as saying shortly before signing the bill into law. "And as governor, I have pledged to do everything in my power to protect it. And that's what I'm doing today."
The reaction to the signing from women's rights advocates was strong and swift. Planned Parenthood and the ACLU have both vowed to file suit against the law, which is set to go into effect on July 1.
"This is a sad day for women and families in Iowa," NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue said, in part, in a statement shared with POPSUGAR. "This law is not just about the women and families of Iowa; it's about all Americans having the right to decide if, when, and how to have a family. This should be deeply concerning to anyone who believes women should be allowed to make decisions about their bodies and control their destinies, and we now look to the courts to defend our essential human rights."
