The 1 Thing Happy People Do Every Day
Growing up with a mother as a counselor definitely had its perks: she was incredibly patient, a supportive listener, and always gave the best advice. Even though my mom is retired, she continues to help others by sharing her years of wisdom on what it takes to be truly happy. She's told me time and time again that while material goods might make me happy in the moment, that feeling is fleeting. I've learned people who are the happiest don't have the most money or aren't the most attractive, but they all share one thing in common:
Happy people practice gratitude every day.
While this may seem simple enough, our minds tend to focus on what we're missing out on instead of being grateful for everything we already have. Our generation has it even harder because we are living in a social world where we are constantly connected. It's easy to feel like you don't have enough when everyone on your social feed appears to be doing cooler things than you.
Good news: there are ways to practice gratitude each day to live your best life. Here's how.
1. Meditate
Starting your day with five minutes of silence has been proven to change your brain chemistry, making you more resilient against life's hardships. However, there are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to meditation. I used to think you had to think about absolutely nothing (which is pretty much impossible) during your practice. But really, meditation is all about being present and not focusing on what you're going to have for dinner or that you forgot to pick up something at the grocery store. The purpose of meditation is to take time for yourself to set an intention for your day and be grateful in that moment.
2. Create a gratitude journal
A gratitude journal is different than a regular journal because it makes you focus on only the good stuff rather than venting about your worries or writing down everything that went wrong in the day. Each day, you should write down at least three things that you're grateful for. By doing this, you can actually rewire your brain to be happier. It's kind of like the "camera effect." When you have a camera, you're constantly looking for interesting things to capture. Instead of hating the graffiti, you might shift your way of thinking and try to make it aesthetically pleasing in your frame. That's how the gratitude journal works for your disposition. Instead of focusing on pessimistic thoughts, you're going about your day looking for positive things to add to your gratitude journal.
3. Surround yourself with positive people
Reflect on your mood and outlook, after you spend time with certain friends. Do you feel inspired and connected or do you feel drained and dissatisfied? If it's the latter, you might want to reevaluate your friendship. We only get one life to live, so why waste any time surrounding yourself with negative influences? It's not easy to cut certain people from your life, but it's even worse to feel unhappy because of the people you're surrounded by. By positioning yourself around inspirational and positive people, you're setting yourself up for a more sunny outlook and successful future.
4. Talk back to your negativity
You know that inner dialogue that says you're not smart enough, pretty enough, or cool enough? While those nagging thoughts are completely normal, the trick is to talk back to them with positive affirmations so they don't get in the way of your happiness. It may seem silly at first, but it works, trust me. If I catch my mind going down a dark rabbit hole, I counter it with logic and positivity. It's OK to have bad thoughts, but what's more important is how you react to them and to make sure they don't take over your life.
5. Focus more on your community and others than yourself
When you're down in the dumps, it's easy to get lost in "me, me, me," which can lead to self-pity and depression. However, when you take yourself out of the equation, you'll start to feel happier because you're helping other people. Try volunteering, writing cards to loved ones, or cooking dinner for a friend in need.
If you practice gratitude each day, you'll slowly start to see a positive change in your disposition and overall outlook on life. It will take discipline and self-control, but really, aren't things you work hardest for worth it in the end?

What to Do With Used or Leftover Charcoal
Your Summer grilling soiree was a hit, and all that's left to do is pack away leftovers and dump out your grill full of charcoal ash and spent hickory chips. But before you upend that Weber, take care to dispose of the mess safely (ash can still be hot!) and properly.
To dispose of charcoal and wood ash: Let the ash cool for 48 hours. You can speed up this process by pouring water over the hot charcoal and stirring it very carefully. When the ash has cooled completely, wrap it in aluminum foil and place it in an noncombustible outdoor trash bin.
If you used additive-free lump charcoal: Fertilize your plants! Charcoal ash contains potash, an important nutrient for some plants. It's also a great way to increase the pH of the soil.
When you have a bag of used charcoal (and not briquettes with additives) sitting around your garage, there are a number of ways to use it up, even if grilling isn't on this Summer's agenda.
- Keep a few pieces in a perforated plastic bag in the refrigerator to kill odors.
- Feed your compost pile to increase the carbon content.
- Place a lump at the bottom of a flower vase to make cut flowers last longer.
- Suppress garden weeds and maintain soil moisture by using charcoal as a mulch.
- Mix crushed charcoal with orchid potting medium to increase the alkalinity.
- And, of course, keep them around for Winter snowman faces!
I Got to an Airbnb, and It Was a Nightmare - Here's What Happened Next
The Airbnb had cobwebs and dead bugs in the corners. Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Annie Gabillet
Ah, the smell of wet dog. That dank scent greeted me upon entering an Airbnb I had booked in Sydney's Bondi Beach. My husband and I were set to stay there for 12 days with two friends. We arrived late at night and were ready to make the most of the place. So we lit a candle, opened some windows, and hoped the place would air itself out.
There was mold all over the walls, cobwebs and dead bugs in the corners, and scary looking stains on the carpet. When it came time to take a shower, brown water came out of the faucet, and it never got warm.
Climbing into bed that night, things still seemed off. The comforter was extremely threadbare and not nearly enough to keep us warm on the chilly Fall night. The pillows felt decades old. But we told ourselves we weren't high-maintenance and would survive. Unfortunately, when we woke up, the extensive problems with the place became evident in the light of day. There was mold all over the walls (perhaps it wasn't wet dog we were smelling after all), cobwebs and dead bugs in the corners, and scary looking stains on the carpet. When it came time to take a shower, brown water came out of the faucet, and it never got warm. This wasn't going to work for almost two weeks.

I decided to contact Airbnb, which encourages you to report problems on the site instead of making it easy to talk to a customer service representative. So I filled out the form reporting that there was a problem with the shower. I didn't realize that this would immediately notify my host, who then reached out to me from her vacation in the US. I explained to her the issues and asked if she would consider refunding us for the nights we hadn't stayed, since we realistically couldn't deal with no hot water and other issues for the next 11 days. She attempted to charge us for seven nights, but since we had to find somewhere new to stay ASAP, that would eat into our budget. So I told her I would contact Airbnb to figure out my options and she should do the same.

With internet sleuthing, I was able to find a phone number for Airbnb customer service. (The toll-free number was: 1-855-424-7262.) After waiting for some time, I got an agent named Shania, who was extremely helpful. I explained to her the situation, and she told me that a lack of hot water would be enough to get us our money back and out of the apartment. But first we'd have to prove it. Shania asked me to send her video of myself turning the water on and holding a bowl of ice cubes underneath the shower. If they didn't melt immediately, that would demonstrate that the water didn't get hot. It also gave me a chance to show the brown, dirty water. I also sent photos of the stained carpet, mold, and cobwebs. With a few more back and forths, Shania said she would arrange for a refund for the nights not stayed and help us find a new spot if needed. On my own, I was able to locate a new Airbnb in our price range that was beautifully decorated and, most importantly, clean. The next morning we relocated there, and Airbnb refunded me the money for the nightmare spot.
According to Airbnb, these are the issues that will make you eligible for a guest refund:
- The host fails to provide reasonable access to the booked listing.
- The listing booked is misrepresented (ex: number of bedrooms, location, lacks promised amenities).
- The listing isn't generally clean, is unsafe, or there's an animal in the listing that wasn't disclosed prior to booking.
Airbnb asks that you first attempt to remedy the issue with the host and then contact Airbnb within 24-hours of check-in with documentation, which is what I was able to do.
From now on, I only book Airbnbs that already have reviews.
Ultimately, I think the host simply wasn't ready for the responsibility of welcoming strangers into her home. As a host myself, I know it takes a lot to get your home ready. It means more than tidying up and often requires a professional to deep clean at least once. If a place has serious problems, like an unreliable hot water situation or mold, you should address them before listing your home on the platform. But I also learned some lessons as a guest. The spot we booked did not have any reviews, and the photos weren't the best quality. I was drawn to the very central location and relative value, but I should have been more discerning and recognized that it was an amateur listing. From now on, I only book Airbnbs that already have reviews. And I always search "clean" within the reviews to see what past guests have to say. Since doing that, I haven't had any bad surprises.

This Is What Happens When You Don't Drink Enough Water
Besides the fact that you'd literally die without it, there are many, MANY imperative reasons to drink water frequently, every single day. It starts out pretty mild - you might feel thirsty and have a dry mouth. But the long-term effects of not drinking enough water not only have an effect on your weight (in a bad way), but they're also extremely dangerous and life-threatening. Here's what happens to your body.
Milder Symptoms
Even mild dehydration has strong effects. Here's how you'll feel with a lack of H2O (hint: it's really not fun).
- Fatigue, tiredness, sleepiness
- Headache
- Constipation
- Dizziness
- Mood change, irritability, increased anxiety
- Sunken eyes
- Shriveled skin
- Muscle cramps
- Joint aches
Severe Symptoms
If things get worse, so do your symptoms. These are the "go to the hospital" signs.
- Low blood pressure, with a rapid heartbeat
- Fever
- Delirium, unconsciousness
- Severe diarrhea and/or vomiting
- Inability to keep fluids down
Latent Effects
Consistently not drinking enough water for an extended period of time has its effect as well. Although you may brush off the milder side effects, your body is still suffering - and several of these have a significant bearing on weight gain.
- Low water, slow metabolism. Your body's ability to remove waste and detoxify is inhibited. In addition, your metabolism is slower without water. One study found that drinking 16 ounces of water daily increases your metabolic rate by 30 percent. Guys. That's literally ONE standard-size water bottle. JUST DRINK IT.
- Increased hunger. When you're somewhat dehydrated, your body confuses it for hunger, causing you to eat when you don't need to. Read: weight gain.
- Slowed circulation, irregular temperature. Your CV system suffers, and your equilibrium is totally out of whack.
- Digestion problems. That constipation we talked about becomes a regular thing. Not fun. Also not great for weight loss.
- General fatigue. Same goes for your energy levels. You'll constantly feel tired, unable (or unwilling) to exercise, and unable to concentrate.
- Increased blood sugar. Your body needs water to break down sugar. If you're diabetic, this is especially dangerous.
Severe Long-Term Effects
Now for the worst of it. Yes, it's terrible that dehydration can make you gain weight (or keep you from losing it), but there are some bigger issues at hand. If you're truly neglecting your water intake, this should likely help you get on track. Here's what happens to your body when you don't get enough water.
- Heat injury
- Brain swelling
- Seizures
- Hypovolemic shock
- Kidney failure
- Coma and death
Now go get yourself a water bottle and FILL. IT. UP.

I Took Apple Cider Vinegar Every Day For 1 Week, and These Were the Results
I'm not a superadventurous person by any means. Skydiving will never be on my bucket list and I never use hot sauce on my food - ever! But in the name of my physical and mental health, I'm into trying just about anything. I tried CrossFit for a year (and I'm still at it!), and I also committed to drinking a gallon of water a day for three weeks (spoiler alert: there were LOTS of trips to the bathroom).
One simple thing I've never tried is taking apple cider vinegar (ACV). I've heard about the possible weight-loss benefits and the fact that it's rich in vitamins E, A, and P and minerals such as magnesium, iron, and calcium. It can also improve digestion and boost immunity. But I am not a vinegar person. The smell alone kept me from it - until now.
A yoga friend mentioned that she takes ACV with fresh lemon juice in her water. She assured me that "it just tastes salty, not super vinegary." I decided to give it a try and commit to drinking a glass once a day for a week. It seemed easy enough to incorporate into my day without a huge commitment.
I filled up a 20-ounce mason jar with water - I usually prefer cold water, but warm water was great on a chilly day. I poured in one tablespoon of ACV (I went for raw, unpasteurized, and organic) and squeezed in the juice from one-quarter of a lemon.
The taste? I could still smell the vinegar slightly, so it definitely tasted a tad sharp and tangy, but not as pungent as I was expecting. It was like a slightly salty lemonade. The fresh lemon juice was key - I ran out of lemons one day, and drinking ACV in plain water was pretty tough to swallow.
What Happened?
I do intermittent fasting in the morning, so I drank my ACV lemon-water in the afternoon or after dinner. I found that the flavor grew on me. I thought drinking it every day would be a chore, but I started to look forward to it.
I found that I really enjoyed the ritual of sipping on my special ACV "cocktail." You see, the only beverages I drink are water, herbal tea, and the occasional black coffee, so this felt a little like a treat - but it was actually a treat for my body.
This ACV lemon water satiated my appetite more than plain old water, which helped curb my desire to nosh after dinner. It also satisfied my need for something sweet, so I wasn't craving a bit of chocolate either. I was shocked at how one tablespoon of ACV could have this much of an effect! This must be why people say ACV can help with weight loss - it fills you up so you eat fewer daily calories.
Will I Keep Going?
Yes! I may not drink it every single day, but I'm hooked. Aside from feeling satiated after lunch or dinner, I also enjoyed sipping on something besides water and found that it offered me a sense of ease and calmness. As an added bonus, my digestion was great all week. No bloating or constipation - just a happy tummy.
If you've contemplated trying ACV, give it a try! It could curb your appetite, make you feel calmer, and ease your digestion, too. If you're worried about the vinegary flavor, try this blueberry banana ACV weight-loss smoothie - you can't taste it at all, but you'll still reap all the health benefits - or make this ACV salad dressing for your greens.
I really thought I'd feel absolutely nothing after a week, but I'm glad I was wrong. My bottle is almost empty, so it looks like I know what I'll be adding to my grocery list!

Can You Stop Being High? What to Know in Case You Overdo It on Weed
One of the most common mistakes marijuana newbies make is smoking or consuming more than they can handle. When you're unsure of your limits, the golden rule is always to start low and slow. But with that being said, even the most seasoned stoners can get higher than they intend from time to time. Once you do reach the point of no return, there are steps you can take to make your high less anxiety-inducing and more enjoyable, including taking a shower and making yourself as comfortable as possible. But unfortunately, there isn't much else you can do other than letting time or sleep sober you up.
The next best thing to do is to try counteracting the effects of THC with CBD, which we've found to be effective with certain products. Each person reacts differently to THC (the psychoactive cannabinoid) and CBD (which is nearly nonpsychoactive in recommended doses), so you may want to experiment with different methods of consumption to see what works best for you. For example, although CBD oil and vape pens didn't reverse my high, a 50 mg CBD candy was extremely helpful in bringing me down.
If you don't have any CBD readily available, don't panic! (No, seriously - it'll make your high so much worse.) Be sure to hydrate plenty, get some fresh air, control your breathing, find some personal space, and relax. This too shall pass!
10 Exercises That Burn 200 Calories in Under 3 Minutes
If you find it hard to lose weight with your busy schedule, the news keeps getting better. First, just 20 minutes of exercise was proven to help increase your metabolism. A related study has found that working out intensely for just 2.5 minutes can spur calorie burn throughout the day - an extra 200 calories' worth.
In the 2012 study, five healthy men performed sprint interval training on a stationary bicycle (five 30-second intense intervals with four minutes of easy cycling in between). Although the men were sedentary the rest of the day, they ended up burning 200 more calories during the days they did the short bout of exercise than the days they didn't exercise at all.
Even though this was a small study, the encouraging results are reason enough to add intense intervals into your workout routine. It's also good news for those of you who can never seem to fit a full workout into your day. Here are 10 intense exercises you can do anywhere for 2.5 minutes so you too can reap the afterburn benefits. Perform these at maximum intensity; you can break them into 30-second or one-minute intervals to make it more manageable. Stick with one, or choose five to do for 30 seconds each!
Just Finished a Run? Try One of These Recovery Snacks
It may seem counterintuitive, but eating after a strenuous workout is a must - especially foods containing a mix of protein and carbohydrates. These nutrients are essential in helping the body replenish lost energy while also helping worked muscles repair and recover. And while sweating through an intense HIIT workout may make you feel like you earned a burger and fries, if weight loss is one of your goals, it's important to fuel the body without taking in more calories than you just burned. If you're not sure what the perfect post-workout snack looks like, here are some solid options for your next sweat session.
Are Steel-Cut Oats That Much Healthier Than Rolled Oats?
Rolled oats sound healthier for you than quick oats because they're less processed, right? So if steel-cut oats are even less processed than rolled oats, they're the healthiest of them all, right? If you're not even sure what the different types of oats are, the explanation below should clear things up.
To shed some light about which oats are better for you, check out the chart comparison below.
Steel-cut oats | Old-fashioned (rolled) oats | Quick oats | |
---|---|---|---|
Description | Also called Irish or Scotch oats, these are cut, not rolled. They look like chopped-up rice, take the longest to cook, and have a slightly chewy consistency. | Sometimes called rolled oats, these look like flat little ovals. When processing these oats, the kernels are steamed first, and then rolled to flatten them. They take longer to cook than quick oats but are quicker than steel-cut oats. | Also called instant oats, these oats are precooked, dried, and then rolled. They cook in a few minutes when added to hot water and have a mushy texture. |
Typical Serving Size | 1/4 cup dry | 1/2 cup dry | 1/2 cup dry |
Calories | 170 | 190 | 150 |
Total Fat | 3 g | 3.5 g | 3 g |
Saturated Fat | 0.5 g | 0.5 g | 0.5 g |
Cholesterol | 0 mg | 0 mg | 0 mg |
Sodium | 0 mg | 0 mg | 0 mg |
Carbs | 29 g | 32 g | 27 g |
Fiber | 5 g | 5 g | 4 g |
Sugars | 0 g | 1 g | 1 g |
Protein | 7 g | 7 g | 5 g |
Calcium | 2% | 2% | 0% |
Iron | 10% | 15% | 10% |
Surprised? It looks like they're pretty similar, but one thing that sets them apart is how they compare on the glycemic index. The less-processed steel-cut oats have a much lower glycemic load than higher-processed quick oats. Low-GI foods slow down the rate that glucose (sugar) gets introduced into your body, and in contrast, high-GI foods cause a spike in your blood sugar as well as insulin, causing you to crave more sugary foods when your glucose levels drop. The best option then are the steel-cut oats, with rolled oats a great second choice. They'll keep you feeling fuller longer, which will keep your energy levels up and help you lose weight.
If you're obsessed with this grain, here are some fun tips and recipes to help you enjoy it even more.
- If you love steel-cut oatmeal, try freezing single-size servings.
- For cake-like oatmeal, try this microwaveable banana peanut butter recipe.
- Make these chocolate peanut butter overnight oats to save time in the morning.
- For a grab-and-go snack, make these chocolate almond oatmeal protein bars or these three-ingredient protein balls.
- Spice up your basic bowl of oatmeal with these under-400-calories flavor combinations.
- For a creamy, drinkable form of oatmeal, try this high-protein banana overnight oats smoothie.

The scrub's lather omits a fragrance that's set to suit your sign. It can be reused for up to 15 times, or about half of your birth month. Read on to see what you should be smelling like, according to the Zodiac.
SZA Showed Up to the Met Gala in a Freakin' Halo
We're starting to suspect SZA might be a real-life angel, especially after seeing her stunning Met Gala beauty look. The Ctrl singer wore her hair in her signature ringlets with a celestial headpiece placed elegantly on her head.
What really made us stop and stare, though, was the singer's incredible makeup that confirmed our theory that SZA only cries tears of gold. Two gold tears were drawn on her cheek, right below her iridescent-purple-painted eyes.
SZA kept the rest of her look simple with a flawless complexion and a glossy nude lip to complete the saintly look.
Kim Kardashian's Met Gala Look Will Make You Say "Meow!"
The moment we saw Kim Kardashian on the Met Gala red carpet, our jaws dropped to the floor. Not only did the star look like she'd been dipped in liquid gold, but her makeup also reached new levels of hot, thanks to her friend and makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic.
As always, Kim's skin looked like she'd just come out of the womb and was perfectly smooth and glowing. The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star wore her signature nude lip (specifically KKW Creme Lipstick in Classic K) and let her bold cat eye become the focus of her look.
According to Mario's Instagram, he created her incredible eye look using shades from the KKW x Mario Eyeshadow Palette ($45) as well as the KKW x Argenis Creme Color Stick in Dramatico ($18).
Kim's dramatically long, glossy hair was placed high on her head, allowing her to really show off her makeup.
Her Royal Rap Highness Cardi B Has Blessed Us All With Her Met Gala Beauty Look
Her royal highness Cardi B came through drippin' on the Met Gala red carpet. Seriously - the star made her first appearance at fashion's buzziest event looking like rap royalty.
Not only were her bedazzled, baroque gown and headpiece absolutely stunning, but her hair and makeup were equally enviable. Cardi rocked booty-length waves courtesy of wig-master Tokyo Stylez. Her makeup artist, Erika LaPearl, used Marc Jacobs Beauty to create a stunning burgundy lip and cut-crease on her eyes.
"Cardi gave me full creative control in cultivating her makeup look. I worked closely with hair and wardrobe to ensure that all of our creative efforts complemented one another," Erica told POPSUGAR exclusively. "Her eyes are so beautiful and I wanted them to be the focus, so I exaggerated the extension of her eye area with Kiss Triple Push-Up lashes in Teddy and diffused eye shadow and intense black liner," she told us.
Of course, Cardi's nails were blinged out in coordinating gemstones by her longtime artist Jenny Bui.
We only have one word to describe how we feel about Cardi's Met Gala look: owwww!

Exclusive: Gigi Hadid's Met Gala Makeup Was Inspired by Soda Pop
Gigi Hadid rolled up to the 2018 Met Gala looking like a million bucks, and notice her near-blinding eye shadow? That came courtesy of a new Maybelline palette that will set you back a mere $14. Oh, and it's the cutest dang thing you'll ever see, because it's soda-themed.
Much like Maybelline's last palette, Lemonade Craze, the Soda Pop offering takes inspiration from your favorite drinks. Gigi's the first person to wear it on the red carpet, and I spoke to her makeup artist, Patrick Ta, to get a sneak peek into this newness.
If it's versatility you crave, Patrick says you can drink it up with this multiuse palette. "If you want to go bold and vibrant, you can use the purple and orange shades, or you can create an everyday look with the brown and gold shadows," he said.
Since Gigi's face chart took inspiration from her stained-glass-themed Versace dress, Patrick opted to go bold or go home. "I applied the shade Grape Pop in the crease, then used the same brush and blended in the shade Blue Raspberry to add even more depth," he said.
Patrick added, "I mixed the shades Cherry on Top and Blue Raspberry on the lid to create a base and blend out the crease. Next, I took a clean brush and pressed Cherry Cola onto the lid for a pop of color. Finally, using a pencil brush, I applied Blue Raspberry on the lower lash line and blended out any harsh edges."
The makeup artist says that if you're tired of a boring black eye shadow look, you can mix it up with the palette's darker colors like Blue Raspberry "to make a statement." This packs just as much punch as your standard black but is just a wee bit different to keep things interesting.
I know, I know - you need this in your life now. You'll just have to wait until September for the Maybelline New York Soda Pop Palette to be released in your local drugstore. Don't despair - you can sign up for a presale notification on the brand's website so you don't miss out come Fall. Until then, you can wet your appetite with the following swatches!
These 20 Treatments For Thinning Hair Actually Work - According to Pros
If you've noticed your hair thinning, you're not alone. "As a salon owner and hairstylist, thinning hair and hair loss are the top concerns of my clients. They all ask me how can they achieve thicker, fuller hair while finding a way to get hair to regrow," says Gabriel Samra, a celebrity hairstylist.
That said, being in good company isn't exactly comforting when you're literally watching your hair wash down the drain. While some hair loss might indicate a deeper medical issue and therefore need to be treated by a doctor, it could be due to stress or poor hair health (see here for a list of common causes), in which case hair experts say you can take matters into your own hands.
From supplements to fillers (it's like Botox for your hair), read on for some of the innovative and sometimes unusual (gelatin, anyone?) products they recommend to clients seeking thicker hair. Some of these picks have proven so successful that the experts have incorporated them into their own regimens.
Don't Let That Headpiece Distract You - It's All About Sarah Jessica Parker's Silvery Blue Shadow
Just when you thought Sarah Jessica Parker's style sense couldn't get any more sublime, she appears on the Met Gala red carpet in a breathtaking Dolce & Gabanna gown and insanely detailed nativity scene headdress. Leave it to SJP to take this year's Met Gala theme, "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination," to unearthly new heights. Although the brocade gold ensemble and crown took center stage, her green goddess eye shadow, created by makeup artist Leslie Lopez, exclusively using Charlotte Tilbury Beauty, was equally as eye-catching.
Lopez created the eye look using five different Charlotte Tilbury eye products. The most vibrant of the layers is the Eyes to Mesmerise Cream Shadow in Cleopatra ($32), a teal cream that was used to rim the top and bottom lash line. A new shade of Eyes to Mesmerise called Star Gold ($32) was also applied to SJP's lids, along with a champagne-gold shade from the brand's new Bigger Brighter Eyes Transform-Eyes Palette ($53). She finished off the accent with Tilbury's new Legendary Lashes Volume 2 Mascara in Black Vinyl ($32) to make the star's eyes pop.
Lily Collins's Met Gala Makeup Was Inspired by the Dark Arts
Lily Collins sauntered into the 2018 Met Gala wearing a black gossamer Givenchy gown, hair that had been transformed into an intricately braided sculptural updo complete with futuristic crown, and makeup that was inspired by the dark arts. The whole look was very gothic chic.
"When I heard the theme for the evening, I automatically leaned into the idea of the occult and the dark arts. Yes, there's a lot of romanticism in religious art, but there's also a heavy sprinkling of the gothic. It just felt like a fun angle to explore," said Fiona Stiles, the celebrity makeup artist responsible for the look, in a press release.
Stiles created the look with Lancôme products, starting with the brand's Advanced Génifique Youth Activating Serum ($142) to prep the skin, along with Teint Idole Ultra 24H Longwear Foundation ($47) and Effacernes Concealer ($31) for the base. She topped it with Lancôme Absolue Powder in Ecru Light ($58).
"I wanted it to look like moonlight on marble skin, a reference to the masters' paintings and old marble sculptures," she told POPSUGAR via email.
For the hollowed-but-glamorous smoky eye, Stiles used Lancôme's Color Design Eyeshadow in Smokey Brown ($22) and layered Volcano on top to create sheen and dimension. For the lips, she added a sheer wash of Le Metallique Lip Gloss in Purple Onyx ($22), which complemented her undertones and played into the occult theme.
Lily also wore gunmetal Swarovski crystals on the center of her upper lid and underneath her lash line, and a blood-red teardrop was placed underneath one eye.
Stiles told us, "The crystals were meant to be celestial tears, and the blood-red tear drop was a nod to stigmatas and the tears of the virgins. You know, lighthearted stuff . . ."
Makeup inspired by masterpiece sculptures, the occult, and stigmata? This might be the coolest Met Gala look of the night, and we love that Lily was game to add this moody layer of dimension to the "Heavenly Bodies" theme.
Selena Gomez Rocked a Bank Vault's Worth of Gold to the Met Gala - on Her Face
Selena Gomez didn't channel a church, the pope, or even a famous hymn for her 2018 Met Gala beauty look. Instead, she channeled a cherub for the "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination" theme - perhaps the most heavenly body there is! The star's glam squad used a veritable bank vault's worth of gold for her molten eye shadow, and Gomez's bronzed tan stood out against the white of her angel robes gown. But most cherubic of all was her hairstyle, which she wore in short, cropped ringlets.

Amal Clooney's Beaming Met Gala Makeup Look Is Not of This Earth
The celestial inner circle, also known as fashion and Hollywood's elite, have descended upon the Met Gala with their interpretation of this year's theme, "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination." One of the standout attendees is Met Gala cochair Amal Clooney, whose makeup look is as stunning as her foiled Richard Quinn bustier. Here are all the details on the look, which was created by makeup goddess herself Charlotte Tilbury.
In an Instagram post, Tilbury called the look "dazzlingly divine" - and that it is. It's a pretty, classic look with defined brows, beaming shimmer around the eyes, and a vibrant red orange lip that picks up on the roses on Amal's metallic train. Tilbury shared the full breakdown with her followers.
On the eyes, Tilbury used the coppery Eyes to Mesmerise cream shadow in Marie Antoinette ($32); she primed and popped the inner corners using the Bigger Brighter Eyes Exagger-Eyes palette ($53). Lids were lined using The Classic Eye Powder Pencil in Audrey($22), and lashes were loaded up with Legendary Lashes Volume 2 ($32).
The statement lip was done using a combo of the Lip Cheat liner in Kiss 'n' Tell ($22) and a custom mix of two Hollywood Lip liquid lipsticks in Walk of Fame and Screen Siren ($34 each). Tilbury topped the fiery pout with her soon-to-be-released Collagen Lip Bath to make Amal's lips dewy and plumped.
To create her glowing skin, a blend of the Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder Foundation ($46) in shades 6 and 7 were used, along with Hollywood Flawless Filter ($44) complexion booster and Hollywood Beauty Light Wand highlighter ($38) along the cheeks. She finished off the face with Filmstar Bronze & Glow duo ($68).
Heavenly, indeed! See more photos of Amal's beauty look ahead!
Priyanka Chopra's Met Gala Beauty Look Will Dazzle Your Face Off
I'm still not over Priyanka Chopra's jeweled Met Gala headpiece, which took literal days to put together. The intricate, whatever-the-fancy-word-for-bedazzled-is little number on her head was definitely showstopping, but I urge you not to overlook the rest of her hair and makeup. So get out your sunglasses, because Priyanka's makeup might just blind you.
The actress and Dove spokeswoman wore a multicolored lid look that had enough bling to rival her studded hood. Let's also be sure to note her impeccably maintained full eyebrows and out-to-there lashes.
Along with that, Priyanka matched her crimson lipstick to her "cardinal red" velvet dress, which really tied the whole look together. We're positively entranced by her middle-parted waves and overall baroque vibe - Priyanka truly aced this year's religious theme!
Chadwick Boseman's Best Met Gala Accessory Had NOTHING to Do With His Outfit
Black Panther fans, is this your (sparkly) king? Let's hear a resounding "hell yeah," because onscreen Marvel superhero Chadwick Boseman dared to rock an accessory at the 2018 Met Gala that had nothing to do with his clothes: glitter all throughout his hair and beard. When you zoom in on photos of the handsome star walking the Met Gala red carpet, you can see flecks of shimmering gold in his hairstyle and facial hair, which become even more apparent when you see video footage of the sparkles. Forget diamonds - shine bright like King T'Challa!
When it comes to his daring beauty look, Boseman is in good company with other male members of the Black Panther cast, some of whom are known for wearing Fenty Beauty to enhance their luminous glow on the red carpet. Keep scrolling to see Boseman's glitter hair up close, then follow along with the whole Black Panther cast's stylish night. Emilia Clarke's Makeup Didn't Match - and That's What Made It So Damn Good
"Don't wear red and pink together" is probably one of your grandmother's style mantras, right up there with no white after Labor Day and sequins can only be worn on New Year's Eve. Luckily, those rules were made to be broken - and Emilia Clarke just used the Met Gala red carpet as an opportunity to remind us how great the two colors can look together.
Daenerys - er, Emilia - swept an ample amount of dramatic pink blush on her cheeks, then offset the whimsical look with a dark crimson lipstick. This all came courtesy of celebrity makeup artist Jillian Dempsey, who used Laura Mercier Second Skin Cheek Color in Heather Pink ($26) and a mixture of the brand's Velour Extreme Matte Lipstick in Hot and Fatale ($28 each) to create the match made in makeup heaven.
In a press releases sent to POPSUGAR, Jillian revealed that she specifically mixed lipstick shades not only to get the perfect color but also to ensure the hue stayed put on her lips all night long. A rule-breaking, transfer-proof pout? Happy Met Gala, indeed.
Blake Lively's Met Gala Manicure Is a Sneaky Tribute to Stained Glass
Spotted: Blake Lively on the steps of the Met Gala red carpet looking like a shooting star.
The actress made her 2018 Met Gala red carpet appearance in a gown fit for Hollywood royalty, but it was her beauty look that really snatched our edges. Blake's hair was tied up in a messy bun adorned with a hairpiece that looked like elegant fireworks. She kept her makeup neutral, rocking a subtle smoky eye and a rosy lipstick shade.
But you may have missed one tiny detail that tied her look together: her hidden nail art. Celebrity nail artist Elle Gerstein used Kiss products to bling out Blake's nails in the front and in the back. Her fingertips were decked out in ruby polish and Swarovski-accented nail art.
Elle got her inspiration from stained-glass windows. "A church's stained-glass window would have 360 views, so I worked with Kiss on a custom set of enhanced nails to make sure every angle was covered, including underneath the nails!" she told POPSUGAR exclusively. "These have a navy color underneath and a teardrop crystal."

Ariana Grande's Huge Hair Bow at the Met Gala Is a Gift to Us All
Our jaws dropped as we saw Ariana Grande float across the red carpet at the Met Gala. The singer managed to stay true to her iconic high ponytail while committing to the Catholic theme by accessorizing with an enormous bow. The sheer bow sat on the "Side to Side" singer's head like a renaissance headpiece.
Ariana didn't just bring the beauty game with her hair accessory, though. The pop star's makeup was completely flawless with nude and peachy hues that enhanced her olive complexion. In true Ariana fashion, she finished off her bronzed look with a bold cat eye and dramatic lashes to complete her ethereal look.
Lynda Carter Wore a Legit Crown to the Met Gala, Hearkening Back to Her Famous Crowned Heroine
Lynda Carter - perhaps most well-known for kicking butt as Wonder Woman in the '70s television series - hit the Met Gala red carpet wearing a legit golden crown, and we are not worthy. It appears as if the timelessly beautiful actress has swapped out her Wonder Woman crown, at least for the evening, for one that better fits the glitzy, extravagant event.
The front of the gilded crown was perched high atop her head over an elegant updo and features Hebrew writing across the entire length. On the back of her head, she wore a large star clip with an ethereal blue-green gemstone in the center. The shape is reminiscent of the Star of David, something Twitter users have pointed out.
Carter completely delivered on the evening's "Heavenly Bodies" theme and, if you ask us, has swiftly earned the title of "Queen of the Ball." Keep reading to see more of her wonderful Met Gala look.
All Hail Queen Fenty: Zoom In on Rihanna's Epic Met Gala Beauty Look
Rihanna's reign just won't let up! Everyone's favorite bad gal (and official cohost of the 2018 Met Gala) showed up to the red carpet and, in true Rihanna fashion, shut sh*t down. The singer was clad in a bedazzled pope-inspired outfit and had the dramatic makeup to match.
Her eyebrows were slightly muted to draw attention to her insanely smoky eye shadow and perfectly highlighted cheekbones. She topped it all off with a rose gold metallic lip gloss and rocked slicked-down sideburns underneath her blinged-out pope hat. Now excuse us while we bow down to the undisputed Met Gala queen.
See more of her look ahead.
Kerry Washington Looks Like an Actual Angel on the Met Gala Red Carpet
The 2018 Met Gala's theme is "Heavenly Bodies," and Kerry Washington showed up to the event looking like a damn angel. The actress walked the red carpet with her hair picked out, and she adorned it with a bedazzled golden hair clip. Kerry's longtime hairstylist, Takisha Sturdivant-Drew, used the Tangle Teezer Thick & Curly Detangling Brush ($18) to tease Kerry's curls and make them larger than life.
For makeup, Kerry opted for a muted bronzed look with highlighted cheekbones, a neutral lip gloss, and dramatic lashes. See her Met Gala beauty from all angles ahead.
