Attention: This Makeup Brush Cleaning Hack Will Change Your Life

Every now and then there comes a beauty hack that stops you in your tracks and makes you think, "Wow that's incredible!" and "Who in the world thought to even use it that way?" That's what I thought when I heard about using an art supply store staple to clean makeup brushes.

I was introduced to this non-beauty beauty tool, the Masters Brush Cleaner and Preserver ($7), by celebrity makeup artist Fiona Stiles, who features the product on her online store, Reed Clarke. Her store is a curated collection of her most beloved beauty finds, which she's picked during her travels around the world. According to her site, she says this is the only brush cleaner she's used since discovering it. "It gets every shade and hue out of every brush I own," she writes.

The Masters Brush Cleaner, which was created in 1979, is actually formulated to dissolve wet or dry paints - like acrylic, oil, metallic, and watercolor - from paintbrushes, and return them to their original shape and luster. According to one Amazon reviewer, "I trust all of my brushes to this brush cleaner, as does every other painter that I know. Art supplies are expensive, and preserving them properly protects and extends that investment. This cleaner has pulled some of my formerly 'ruined' brushes back from the edge." So, if you apply that same principle to makeup brushes, it makes complete sense it should translate from the art easel to your bathroom vanity.

The cleaner inside the jar is actually a solid compound, which has a faint lemon scent. It reminds me of raw coconut oil - when you push your fingers down inside it, the product melts and mushes a little bit. That firmness is what makes the cleaner so easy to use.

Here are the steps to cleaning your makeup brushes using the Masters Brush Cleaner:

  1. Wet the brush hairs so they are just damp enough to be able to loosen the grit off of them.
  2. Swirl the brush directly into the compound and work into a lather.
  3. Using the palm of your hand or a silicone makeup cleaning mat/mit, massage the brush hairs to work the makeup out fully.
  4. Rinse the brush under cold water, reshape the hairs, and lay it flat to dry on a towel.
  5. Dump out any excess liquid that's pooled inside the jar. And don't worry about accidentally dumping out the compound itself because it will remain in solid form, looking as clean as when you first opened the jar!
  6. Repeat all steps above as many times as needed for heavily soiled brushes (though I've found even my most-used foundation brush looked sparkling after only two cycles).

In total, this process takes me maybe two minutes max per brush. Typically, I look at cleaning my brushes as a dreaded chore, which means I usually put it off for way longer than I should (because who wants to spend time cleaning?). With this new method, however, I can clean any of my brushes as soon as I need to, and I've even had success cleaning my Beautyblender and other makeup sponges this way. Knowing how gentle the formula is, I'm confident using it on even my fanciest (read: expensive) brush, an Artis Oval 7. Oh, and the other good news: there's no scent left behind when the brush is fully dry. It will feel soft and restored.

The Master's Cleaner is available in four sizes: .25 oz, 1 oz, 2.5 oz, and 24 oz. I purchased the 1 oz size and thought it had just the right mouth opening for a majority of my brushes (for the fluffier ones, I simply pinched the hairs together and then dipped them inside the jar). It's tiny and lightweight enough that you can even consider throwing it in your travel makeup bag. Now if only I could figure out a way to make my entire brush collection portable, too!

My Career Didn't Take Off Until After I Had Kids

Can We All Agree That Participation Trophies Should Not Be Given to Kids?

A month before our local scouting program's boxcar race, my son excitedly outlined design ideas to make his boxcar a winner. Within hours, however, his excitement fizzled. The boxcar sat on the kitchen counter untouched until three days before the race. My husband talked my son around, and they worked in the garage for an hour before reappearing with a freshly painted red boxcar. When they showed me the finished product, I asked two questions: 1.) Do you think you should do more to it? and 2.) Do you think you tried your best? My son answered no and yes, respectively.

The day of the race, I wished my son good luck and told him that it's OK to be upset if he were to lose. I'm no engineer, but I was confident that simply putting red paint on a wooden car would not increase the speed. My son typically excels in school, his chess program, and soccer, so I wanted to prepare him for his impending letdown. I stressed to him that it's important to understand how he could improve so that he could have a better shot next time. When he returned from the race, he told me that his car was the slowest and that it didn't even have enough oomph to cross the finish line.

My son didn't do anything to deserve such recognition. He wasn't passionate about it, put in minimal effort, and wasn't fazed by his lack of success.

Fast-forward to the end-of-the-year awards ceremony. My son received pins and badges for activities he completed, then the den leader pulled out a trophy that honestly shocked me. As he described the person who matched the qualifications to receive the trophy, my son's face beamed with pride. Then he said it, "The Slowest Car Award goes to . . . " My son giggled and raced to the front of the room to collect his trophy. I looked around, and parents and other scouts were clapping for him as if he had done something notable to receive an award.

As we walked to the car, I asked him why he was so excited. He told me that he felt he deserved an award because other people got them. Before I knew it, I went on a 20-minute rant explaining how his trophy diminished the win of the child who had the fastest car. My son ignored the requests from his dad and me to get started, and he wasn't interested in attending the car preparation workshop. He simply showed up, was surprised that he didn't win, and then actually ended up with an award. I've never been a fan of participation trophies, but this one in particular is an example of overstating effort. My son didn't do anything to deserve such recognition. He wasn't passionate about it, put in minimal effort, and wasn't fazed by his lack of success. What kind of message is that sending to the child who spent hours making their boxcar the best it can possibly be?

As the school year ended, my son brought home more and more trophies that were awarded for actual talent and skill. I noticed the slowest car trophy became less visible on his nightstand to make room for his real accomplishments. When I asked why, he stated that his other awards made him proud because he knew he worked hard to earn them.

The whole experience taught me that kids don't need to be babied when it comes to participation. They shouldn't be celebrated just for showing up and doing the bare minimum. They should be recognized if and when they work hard, go above and beyond their duties, and excel at something they put their minds to. My son works very hard at many things, and those are the trophies I'm proud to see him earn.

What Your Sign Says About Your Parenting Style

Who we are as parents is a mixture of experiences. Our predetermined personality was forged throughout our lives, and our astrological signs help guide us when figuring out what kind of parent we are and who we hope to be. Some parents are no-nonsense, while others seem to thrive in experiences where children can be free. Some are extremely organized, while others just go with the flow. And since every sign has such strong personality traits, it's only natural that they also apply to parenting styles. Keep reading to see what parenting traits each sign has.

Managing Mom Guilt Is a Daily Struggle That I Can't Win

What It's Like Being a Parent When Your Partner Works Crazy Hours

Sometimes I beat myself up for not being the best mom. I wonder how my other mom friends do it - have the time to cook Instagram-worthy meals while being responsible for the kids, feed said meals to said kids, and do bath and bedtime and live to tell the tale. Then I remember . . . most of my mom friends have partners who are home from work for all of the above. My husband, however, works outside the traditional 9-to-5 window.

When I'm getting snippy with our toddler or silently cursing about the baby's unrelenting fussing, I do feel a little sorry for myself. But then I remember I'm not the only one whose partner works crazy hours, and that there are moms who have it much harder than I do (all hail the single parent). But I'm talking about being a unit, one-half of a married couple, one-half of a parenting duo, yet finding myself alone . . . a lot.

Shift work is the culprit here, and many families know how hard it can be to make the schedule of shift work occupations manageable. Nurses, doctors, law enforcement, first responders, transportation workers, security officers, hospitality workers, and so many others all have odd working hours in common. Shifts can be overnight, 17 hours long, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., what have you. If anyone in this type of work is married with children, their partner is usually a one-person team during those hours.

I'm talking about being one-half of a married couple, one-half of a parenting duo, yet finding myself alone . . . a lot.

When my husband and I were dating and living together, the schedule was tough to get used to. I worked a regular job, and I was home for dinner every night. He worked 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. one week, then 4 p.m. to midnight the next week, and that's not counting overtime shifts (which is how a lot of shift workers make most of their money). Doesn't sound too crazy, right? Well, we wouldn't see each other every other week because I would be asleep by the time he got home and he wasn't awake when I left in the morning. And while my weekend was Saturday and Sunday, his could be Tuesday and Wednesday one week and Sunday and Monday the next.

Every other week, I ate dinner by myself every night (but, on the bright side, also had full control of the television remote). There were nights our friends would go out, and I'd either go by myself or not at all because he'd be at work. Everyone got used to me coming to functions and holidays celebrations alone, and I started seamlessly living the life of a single, taken person.

While I generally didn't mind it, I did wonder what it would all mean when we had kids. Would he miss soccer games and ballet recitals? Would he be able to help with homework or attend a science fair? Would I feel alone in parenting? The answer to all of those questions is yes and no. He often misses seeing our daughter for more than a day or two because he'll get home from work once she's at school, then be asleep or back at work when she gets home. But on his days off, he takes her out for daddy-daughter dates, he spends time with the baby, and we all sit down for dinner together. He tries his best to be around for important things by switching his shifts for birthday parties and holidays the kids will remember. He does the best he can, and so do I.

But I, like my friends who are also married to shift workers, can't help but long for the routine of Daddy coming home for dinner, us putting the kids down together, and enjoying a full weekend of family time. I'm always so thankful that he works so hard for our family, and I've accepted our version of traditional family time. Would I like him around when I'm wrangling two slippery kids in the tub? Yes. Would he probably be better at calmly reading bedtime stories? I think so. But it makes the time we do manage to spend together that much more meaningful. And isn't that what marriage and families should be about? A bunch of meaningful moments that, when combined, make up your family story? Because no matter how different the chapters are each week, I really love our story.

10 Reasons Being a Divorced Mom Is Actually Kind of Awesome

I recently overheard some of my married mom friends discussing how they can't remember the last time they slept past 6:30 a.m, as if their kids waking them up at the crack of dawn was a universal mom problem. As I listened, I suddenly I found myself unexpectedly smirking. I sleep late every other weekend and every Tuesday morning. Divorce sure does have its perks, I thought.

As is often the case with life, I have been pleasantly surprised to discover that divorce is not nearly as awful as I had first anticipated. Once I got through the initial sadness and mastered the art of acceptance, I adjusted nicely to life as a divorcee. I soon caught myself smiling and laughing more often. On the weekends, when the kids were at their dad's house, I discovered creative methods of self-care that helped me embrace my time without the kids rather than sit in misery missing them. All of the pieces started to fit together, and just a few short years after the divorce was finalized, I fell in love with my life again. Here is what I love about life after divorce.

  1. The B Word (Balance) - A shared custody agreement comes with built-in balance for both parents. I'm forced to take time to myself, away from my children. I've learned to cherish my "off" days and take good care of myself with things like mani-pedis, visits to the gym, and a table for one at the nearest fine-dining establishment.
  2. Dating at 40? Hell, Yeah! - Dating is fun and exciting. I have new confidence in myself and zero expectations, which makes for a pretty good combo when swiping right. My life is full and complete, and I love myself, so I have nothing to lose in the world of dating. It's exciting to think that The One may still be out there, and that, at 40 years old, the best is yet to come.
  3. I Like My Ex a Lot More Now That He Isn't My Husband - I consider myself lucky, because I can honestly say that I get along well with my ex-husband. He's the only other person in the universe who loves our three kids as much as I do, and our interactions are restricted to children-related topics and activities only. We coparent and put the kids before everything else, so I'd say we get along about 92 percent of the time, which is pretty good considering our track record.
  4. Sleep Is Amazing - I may never get married again because I love (like, love with a capital L Love) sleeping alone. I can't ever imagine wanting to sleep in the same bed with another grown adult every single night for the rest of my life. I love my bed, my covers, and my pillows at the temperature of my choice. No snoring. No sleep talking. No one else waking up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, or, God forbid, hitting snooze five times on his alarm clock in the morning. No. Thank. You.
  5. I Love My Last Name Again - I reverted to my maiden name when I got divorced and it was a decision that plagued me for months. I didn't want to throw salt on the divorce wound and tell the kids, "I'm not a Walsh anymore." It was, however, something I needed to do to remain true to myself and thus it feels right, I have no regrets, and the kids are just fine. Sure, their friends still call me Mrs. Walsh, but hey, IDGAF. I will always be a Hayes.
  6. Like Destiny's Child, I'm an Independent Woman - I have fixed toilets, hung pictures, packed up moving trucks, painted walls, shoveled the snow, and paid my own bills. I load the dishwasher however I want, leave dishes in the sink overnight, and watch whatever Netflix series I want by myself. Independence feels good.
  7. I Found Myself - Being a wife and a mom at a young age, I lost myself. I fell into the mom role, not really knowing who I was or what I wanted out of life. Only after I got divorced did I truly find myself. I discovered hobbies that were all mine, I learned my strengths and weaknesses, and I created new goals for myself all because I had the freedom and independence to explore all things me.
  8. I Can Do It - There were days when I felt as though I could not get it all done. Sometimes the emotional toll of being a divorced mom was too much to bear. But the more I got through those days, the more I learned I could do it, and I would do it. No matter what. I look back on a handful of hard times and I'm proud of myself for getting through it all with strength, courage, and integrity. I use that to power through the next challenge.
  9. The Kids Are Closer to Each Other - I catch glimpses of my children comforting one another, laughing over private jokes, and even reading bedtime stories to each other. I know they're closer to one another because of the divorce, and for that I'm grateful. They have learned to be there for each other through thick and thin, laughter, and tears, and they're creating bonds that will last a lifetime.
  10. Silver Linings - Life after divorce has taught me to look for the silver lining in everything. If I can get through the end of a marriage and find blessings in the ultimate failure, well, damn, I can find silver linings in just about anything.

My Son Is Nothing Like Me, and It Kills Me Sometimes

I realized pretty early on that my oldest child was nothing like me. There was the time we were at his friend's second birthday party and he nervously gripped my leg while the other kids ran straight to interact with the clown. In retrospect, I get it (clowns are creepy), but rather than empathize with my son about it, I tried to convince him to be social. When he didn't budge, a wave of anger washed over me because I was annoyed that he didn't want to join in.

There was also the time when he got to the final round of a modeling callback for a kids' clothing brand, and the audition ended with me yelling at him for "not even trying." We both ended up crying on that busy street in Manhattan, mainly because I couldn't believe I made my poor son go through that audition. I hated that he was crying because I made him feel bad, and, oh, because I yelled at him in a waiting room full of strangers. That was a low point for me. I looked at his tear-streaked red face through my equally tear-streaked red face (plus mascara) and vowed I would never do that to him again. But a part of me also thought, "How is this my child? Aren't these things supposed to be fun?"

It's taken me almost four years to really appreciate my son for who he is. Is it bad that it's taken me this long to figure that out?

You see, growing up, I was that person who was the first to try everything and had no fear about other people's judgments. I was the first person in my freshman class to raise their hand for the pep rally pie-eating contest. I tried out for every musical even though I had a horrible singing voice. Long story short, I can talk to a wall whether the wall likes it or not. My best friend still jokes to this day, "I've been trying to break down your Iron Curtain of self-esteem since the late '90s." I just assumed my kid would be the same way, but where did I get this narrative that, because I bore my son, he should be like me? And by that I mean ONLY the good stuff? I knew I had to change my own narrative unless I wanted to be the star role in his future therapy sessions.

So, I started looking at him differently. Rather than get frustrated when he wouldn't go down the "big kid" slide, I noticed how he stood at the bottom and cheered ecstatically for his friends who whipped down it. When I used to get frustrated that he would hang back from a birthday party dance circle, I now noticed how much he enjoyed observing and paying close attention to what the entertainer was saying.

I now have two kids, and my son is the big brother that little brothers dream of. He has so much kindness and empathy toward other kids and adults. I've learned he's full of so much self-assurance that he doesn't need to be the center of attention or the kid that's first to start the dance party. He doesn't want to be. That's not who he is, and he's more than happy to let his buddies take the lead. He has a quiet confidence that speaks loudly, and I genuinely find myself learning how to act in certain situations from him.

It's taken me almost four years to really appreciate my son for who he is. I realized my main job is to cultivate, guide, support, and love him just as he is and for who he wants to be. Is it bad that it's taken me this long to figure that out? Probably.

My younger son is basically my mini me. He's feral, loud, random, funny, and so annoying that it just circles back to being charming (See? Me.), but I am no more fulfilled with having someone who is much more "my child." Yes, it's easier to relate at times, but I also love learning from someone so different. Both of my sons teach me so much, and I have so much left to learn.

Dear Family, Before You Buy Me a Mother's Day Gift, Please Do This Instead

When I used to think of Mother's Day, all the way back when I didn't have kids, I used to think of a day when mothers felt blessed and grateful to be with their families, were constantly showered in chocolate and brunch food, and hung their kids' art on the fridge with pride. Before I was a mother, Mother's Day seemed serene and beautiful, but now that I am? Well, it's not always that great, is it? For many mothers (myself included), we're left disappointed. We open a card that our husband bought at the gas station on the way home from church that same day, and instead of being the one who is served brunch, we usually have to plan it for our mother-in-law.

I'm going to tell my husband exactly what I want this Mother's Day, and do you know what that is? An entire weekend to myself.

So this year, before my husband buys me something from the store that I don't want and will likely never use (thanks for trying though, babe), I'm going to do what we tell our kids to do - I'm going to "use my words." Yep, I'm going to tell him exactly what I want this Mother's Day, and do you know what that is? An entire weekend to myself. Sure, I'll miss out on the surprise element of a gift, but at least this way I won't be disappointed. I can celebrate myself by giving myself a break, because I can't think of anything I want (or deserve) more.

Since I don't want to take actual Mother's Day away from my kids, I'll take back my weekend either before or after the actual holiday. We can spend Mother's Day together as a family, but when I take my weekend, my husband is on his own. I'll leave the loud and chaotic walls of our house and head to a coffee shop. I'll slowly sip on coffee that's actually hot, eat a pastry nobody is asking me to share, and write without interruption. I'll get lost in my own thoughts that have nothing to do with school pick-up and cartoons. I'll go for a run on my favorite trail, soaking in the green trees and taking big, deep breaths as I go. And later, I'll see my friends.

We'll saunter into a restaurant we've been wanting to try but haven't yet because babysitters are expensive and free time is hard to come by. We'll sip on our drinks and actually take our time with our conversations (no more "hold on" or "one sec" because our children or partners need us). We'll enjoy our meals and womanhood on our Mother's Day weekend, because we're more than just moms. That night, I'll come home later than normal and fall into bed. And the next morning, I'll sleep in, even if it's only until 8 a.m. I'll wake up well-rested, feeling a little bit more like myself again, and grateful that I have a husband who would happily give me a week off if I needed it. And I'll squeeze my kids tight, letting them know how thankful I am that they're mine.

It may seem a bit extravagant and selfish, but I don't care. Motherhood is the best and hardest job you can have, and one day to celebrate that just isn't going to cut it, especially if you do things you don't even want to do. Ladies, take back what's yours: Mother's Day weekend. Do your own thing and celebrate yourself as a mother and a woman, however it is you'd like, because it's time that Mother's Day became about you and not everyone else around you.

My Son and Daughter Share a Room, and I Don't Have Any Plans of Separating Them

In some homes, kids share a room by choice (usually their parents'). In others, it's a necessity due to lack of space. In our house, my two small children, ages 5 and 3, share a room because they want to. At first, it was just an experiment. They asked if they could sleep in the same room, so for fun, we let them, but it blossomed into the two of them permanently sharing space. But because our 5-year-old is a boy, and our daughter is younger, I know it won't be like this forever.

If my kids were both the same sex and they never complained about not having their own space, I'd keep them there until they went to college.

My husband and I are done in the baby-making department, so whenever my kids are ready, they can each have their own room again. But for now, the fact that they want to be together makes my heart burst. Studies have shown that, for many children, sharing a room with their sibling or siblings is more about inclusion than anything else. Before they reach the age when they want their own space, kids just really love being together, which is definitely true for my little ones. At night, we usually have to remind them to stop chatting because it's time to go to sleep, and they definitely get into mischief if they get bold and close the door. It makes me smile thinking about their imaginations bouncing off each other as they talk under the covers and the cute little memories they make together when we're not there. It's a pretty cute gig, but when will I have to, or should, move one of them out?

Honestly, if my kids were both the same sex and they never complained about not having their own space, I'd keep them there until they went to college, but I have a feeling things will get a little dicey in a few years as they head toward puberty. To curtail this potential awkwardness, I plan on separating their rooms before the onset of puberty - around the time my son is 11. I assume they'll both be ready for a little privacy by then anyway. But if one of them expresses a desire to have their own room before that time comes, I'm open to that too. I don't plan on forcing them to stay together if they don't want to, because what makes their current setup so special is their equal happiness in being there.

Before separate rooms (and puberty, ah!) needs to be a concern of mine, I'll sit back and watch my kids grow . . . together. So far, their shared room has created so many more good memories than bad. Sure, they fight sometimes like all siblings do, but they're also incredibly close. They share better, are able to solve conflicts easier, and don't tattle on each other to Mom and Dad as quickly anymore. Their tastes and interests are different, but their room reflects each in a perfect balance. Nobody is upset about a certain toy being on a shelf or a certain color on their bed sheets. So unless they ask to be separated, they'll share a room for the foreseeable future. Because it's been an experiment that I don't want to know the outcome of yet.

Barefoot Wine Officially Has Spritzers in a Can, and OMG, Gimme the Red Sangria!

As soon as the sun starts peeking out from behind the clouds, the wheels in our heads immediately start turning to figure out how we're going to make the most of the Summer months ahead. And one of the best parts about warm weather? Everything tends to be way more low-key, especially when it comes to soirées. Enter Barefoot Wine & Bubbly's newest line of spritzers that conveniently come in a dainty can and will become your new go-to Summer drink.

What can wine-lovers expect? The light, refreshing drinks offer a heavenly mix of sweet and fizzy. And say what you want about canned wine, but there are tons of perks to going the aluminum route, especially in the Summer. After all, you're not normally allowed to bring glass anywhere close to a pool - so these eight-ounce containers are the perfect solution.

Now, let's get down to business and discuss the flavors, because there are more than enough to pick from. First, there's a Red Sangria that has notes of nearly every citrus fruit, along with a little pineapple. There's also a Rosé - hello, old friend! - that has peachy undertones, and a Moscato if you really want to go full-on sweet.

Guys and gals who are more into white wine will love the combination of Chenin Blanc and Riesling that come together in the cans of Crisp White, and finally, there's a Summer Red that combines several of your favorites - like Moscato, Zinfandel, and Pinot Noir - into a supersmooth sip. You can snag a four-pack of each flavor at stores nationwide for $8 starting on May 1.

This Is How You Should Drink Wine, According to a Sommelier

Long before my friends were done drinking light and cheap beer, I was drinking wine. I'd like to blame my parents for this, as the cultural traditions of my family and my parents' love of delicious food and beverages pushed me to develop a more sophisticated palate than someone in their early 20s probably should have.

Cue my 30s, where my inner foodie came out to play among my group of friends, and I found myself wanting to know more about wine. I wanted to know what paired well with the cheese I liked. I wanted to know what would enhance the flavor of my meat or what would carry my fish. I was lost in aisles in the wine store picking out wine based on labels and little else and enjoying days at the vineyards getting a bit buzzed but having really no sense of what would work later. I just knew that I liked a specific wine in a specific moment, but did I really like it? Was it worth the investment?

To settle my desire for more information, I took an introduction to wine appreciation class at my local community college, taught by a professional sommelier. I ended up loving it so much that I signed up for the next series as well as a few one-off regional classes in the summertime. But not only did I love it, I learned a lot, too. Want to know what it's like to learn how to drink wine from someone who is certified to basically do just that for a living? Here are some of the coolest things I learned.

The 5 S's Tasting Method Is the Way to Go

Yes, there is a complete method to tasting wine. It's not just pop the cork and go; there are five steps to ensure you are getting the most out of your wine-tasting experience. It goes like this:

  • See: First, the wine is to be seen for color, which is checked by holding up the glass against a backdrop at a 45-degree angle. Cool tip: a Pinot Noir is the only wine that can show a blue rim variation!
  • Swirl: You swirl wine "to look pretentious," my instructor joked. No, really it is to let out the aromas.
  • Smell: Time to take a whiff of that wine. Our professor gave us an aroma wheel, and if you're serious about wine tasting, I suggest you look at one yourself. This helped me realize where my senses (both smell and taste) were lacking and where they were strong. Let's just say I can pick out the smell of tobacco and leather, but ask me the difference between a peach and an apricot and I cannot help you. This allowed me to rectify the situation (I seriously picked up one piece of fruit from every container in the supermarket one day and sat down with all of them, sniffing and tasting) and made my wine experience much better.
  • Sip: After smelling comes the tasting. It's fun to see which aromas you smelled are actually in the wine. However, sometimes the wine may surprise you and taste almost nothing like it smelled.
  • Spit or Swallow: Then, of course, you swallow. There is no reason to spit out perfectly good wine, unless it's gone bad - but, TBH, if you're paying attention, you'll know before you get to this part if the wine is spoiled.

You Should Swirl Your Bubbles, Too

Contrary to popular belief, yes, you should follow the 5 S's method for your sparkling wine, and this includes giving it a good swirl. You don't have to be aggressive with it, but gentle enough to release the aromas of the Cava, Prosecco, or Champagne you are drinking.

You Should Swirl Your First Sip of Wine Like Mouthwash

On the first sip of the night, you should give your wine a good swishing action around your mouth. This, according to my teacher, gets the palate ready to absorb all of the flavors in the wine. On your second sip, you'll be a bit more gentle and discerning about what you taste.

Yes, You Can Taste the Difference Depending on Where the Wine Is From

Old World wines (from France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Germany) and New World wines (from the US, Australia, South Africa, Chile, Argentina, and New Zealand) have certain differences that anyone can taste. Old World wines are often described as tasting lighter and less fruity and having less alcohol but higher acidity. New World wines are often described as tasting riper and more fruity and having higher alcohol and less acidity.

One of my favorite ways to distinguish an Old World wine vs. a New World wine (and a little tidbit I pull out to sound smart around my friends) is the amount of pepper flavor you can taste in New World wines. You can taste white pepper, black pepper, and jalapeño as the wine finishes, giving you a little kick at the end.

The Wine You Like May Have a Bunch of Different Names

In the Old World, you drink by the region, while in the New World, you drink by the grape. For example, I love to drink a good Pinot Noir, what it's called in the New World. But if I wanted to get the same kind of wine in an Old World bottle, I'd have to look for a Burgundy (made in, well, Burgundy, France). There are also slight name variations. For example, a Syrah, which is also made in France, has taken on new life as a Shiraz, which is planted in Australia. Do some research on your favorite wine and what it's known as around the world so you won't ever have to sit there looking confused as you read the wine list.

An App Can Seriously Help

I have been using Vivino since my professor recommended it. It lets you take a picture of the bottle of wine you are having and save it, giving you price points, places to buy, and information about the wine itself. It came in handy while I was in Italy and was spending days tasting way too many wines to remember. Now, I use it when I'm at dinner with friends or family but also to take photos of wine I didn't like, just so I know not to go that route again.

21 Tips For Hosting the Perfect Yard Sale

Warmer weather means yard sale season! Although the thought of getting up early on a Saturday morning may not be our favorite, the thought of purging while earning some cash is just the motivation we need. Here are some fun tips for having a successful - and profitable - garage or yard sale.

  1. Pick a date well in advance. This will allow you time to prepare and comb through your belongings. It's amazing how much easier it is to part with things once you know that you will get some cash from selling a used item.
  2. Find a location. A high traffic area is best, so if you have a family member or business owner who has a spot on a main road, don't be afraid to ask. Also, decide on an indoor or outdoor sale. For an indoor sale, clearly mark what areas are "off limits" to visitors.
  3. Sell with friends. The more the merrier, plus it will attract more buyers. Having a family or neighborhood event helps sale-goers realize that they can maximize their time by hitting many sellers in a one area.
  4. Clearly mark your items. Price each item. For a more flexible option, create sections for your sale - say a $1 table - so that prices are clear. If you don't have time to mark things, you can always tell people a price - although some people are too shy to ask, and as a seller it can be difficult to keep prices straight in your head.
  5. Be reasonable with pricing. If your prices are too high, buyers will shy away. Don't sell yourself too short, yet also be prepared to part with your items. Do not expect to get retail or consignment shop prices. A good judge is pricing items at around 10 percent of what it would cost new. You will be haggled with, so be prepared to remain firm on some items while accepting offers on others. For a buyer purchasing multiple items, a group discount is a nice added touch.
  6. When listing your yard sale, utilize the free options and skip the classified ads! Post the event on Craigslist a few days before, and include your address, photos, and a description on the listing. Add your sale to Facebook "yard sale" pages. If you don't belong to one, just search "yard sale" on Facebook, and many will come up! Request to join a group, and then post about your event.
  7. Create noticeable, readable signs. Use large pieces of cardboard or poster board to announce your sale. You will get a lot of drive-by traffic, and these shoppers need to be able to clearly see where you are located. Directional signs are helpful (say leading drivers from key intersections). If you live off the beaten path, adding a distance - for example, "yard sale 1.3 miles" - will be helpful so that drivers don't have to question where they are headed.
  8. Hang your signs up ahead of time. Signs out on a Thursday afternoon will catch the attention of those who are thinking of heading out to sales over the weekend.
  9. Save your plastic bags and boxes. These will come in handy when people purchase multiple items at your sale.
  10. Have a plan for kids and pets. Arrange childcare or assign duties to children, and keep family pets at bay.
  11. Have plenty of selling surfaces. Use foldable tables and garment racks when you can. Tarps, blankets, and upside down totes and boxes can offer extra places to put your wares.
  12. Be prepared for early birds. Some customers arrive before dawn with their flashlights! It's up to you how accommodating you are, but be prepared that you may have those who are wanting to peruse before you open.
  13. Merchandise your items. Make your yard sale a pleasant place to shop, and place objects in an attractive arrangement. Group like items, such as placing children's clothing, books, and toys together.
  14. Have plenty of change. Go to the bank and get quarters, and $1, $%, and $10 bills. If a buyer has been to the ATM, they will be armed with $20 bills . . . even when purchasing an item for just $1.
  15. Wear your money. You can don an '80s fanny pack if you'd like, but a small, cross body bag with a secure closure helps keep track of your money at all times.
  16. Protect yourself from the sun! Hopefully you will have a lovely, sunny day, so be prepared to slather on sunscreen and wear a hat.
  17. Designate someone as your money organizer. It's not good to be pulling out a huge stack of organized bills or - worse yet - an unorganized wad of cash. Having someone who can step off to the side and organize the money is very helpful. It offers the opportunity to arrange bills in order and separate some of the money so that you don't have to pull it all out in order to give change.
  18. Be aware of shoplifters. This is the most disappointing thing to experience at a yard sale, so keep small, valuable, or high ticket items within close proximity to avoid loss.
  19. Donate your items. At the end of the sale, decide what items you want to pack away and what you would like to donate. Heading to a local charity (or calling their pickup service ahead of time) helps the community.
  20. Have someone else cook! Order pizza or eat out. You deserve it after a day of hard work and putting money into your pocket.
  21. Pick up your signage. Take down your signs after the day is done.

The Scary Truth About Clawfoot Tubs

For several years now, clawfoot tubs have been the darlings of glossy magazine makeovers and Pinterest dream bathroom boards alike. But beneath their old-fashioned charm lies a harsh reality: they're not very practical. And worse, they can be downright damaging to your home. Don't take our word for it - Drew and Jonathan Scott, the stars of HGTV's Property Brothers and spokespeople for Esurance, recently gave us an earful about the scary pitfalls of clawfoot tubs.

"It doesn't butt up against the wall, so you get a lot of spillage and it can cause damage to your wall or can seep in and actually drip down from your bathroom to your lower level ceiling," says Jonathan, who reminds homeowners to 'think function as well as style' when selecting the right tub for their home. This is especially important if you have kids who will inevitably splash water outside the tub. Adults can struggle with clawfoot tubs, too, especially when there's no separate shower. Drew advises, "If you're going to do it as both a shower and a tub, it has to be in a wet room. You have to have everything tiled and waterproof you can't have it in a regular room."

We're glad we know just how complicated this classic style actually is before taking the plunge (so to speak)!

Staring at Screens All Day Is Damaging Your Eyes - Here's How to Protect Them

In the words of Madonna, "I'm a digital girl in a digital world." Digital devices have allowed us to connect with people all over the world, but there are a few downsides to consider, like digital eye strain. If you've ever suffered from discomfort after using a digital device for longer than two hours, chances are you're experiencing digital eye strain. The Vision Council found that more than 83 percent of Americans report using digital devices for more than two hours a day, with more than half of the same group using two devices simultaneously and experiencing digital eye strain. If completely disconnecting is not an option, here are some tips to consider to protect your eyes from strain.

Remember to Blink

"When you look at a screen you're so involved that you forget to blink. The blink rate goes from 15 times a minute to five or seven times per minute," said ophthalmologist Dr. Matthew Gardiner. Blinking helps keep the front of your eye surface moist.

Follow the 20-20-20 Rule

The 20-20-20 rule is easy to implement daily. Take a 20-second break from your screen every 20 minutes and look at something 20 feet away.

Adjust Your Workspace

The Vision Council recommends positioning yourself at arm's distance away from your computer monitor. Another tip is to lower your monitor. You want the center of the monitor to be about four to eight inches below eye level and around 20 to 28 inches from the eyes. Position your monitor to avoid glare from overhead light and windows.

Increase the Text Size

Another quick fix is to increase the text size on your devices, as this will help define the content on the screen.

Reduce Glare

Using softer lighting on your devices and matte filters will reduce the glare on tablets, phones, and computers.

Check Your Prescription

Discomfort could be caused by not having the right prescription for your glasses! Be sure to get a comprehensive eye exam every one to two years.

6 Tips For Driving Across America on an Extratight Budget

Is it just me or is there something so incredibly satisfying about a good, classic road trip? Think about it: tearing up the highways with the windows down, the music blasting, and not a care in the world. Or, at least, it feels that way. And we all know driving across the United States is the king of all road trips. What we don't all know is that this adventure can be achieved on even the tightest of budgets.

I'm here to tell you how.

See, five years ago, my boyfriend (now husband) and I embarked on this great American adventure. We had big dreams of making this trip together, but being college students at the time, we had very little money. Yet we couldn't shake the urge to go, see, and explore. Unsure whether we'd ever get the opportunity again, we decided to stretch our savings as far as possible and just go for it. For 31 glorious days, we drove more than 8,500 miles, traveled through 19 states, and saw more beauty than our eyes ever could have imagined, all without zeroing our bank accounts. Our trip was by no means glamorous, but it sure was worth every penny.

Driving across the United States deepened my appreciation for this country I am so fortunate to call home. From the majestic wonders, such as Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, to the serene flatlands of the Midwest and the breathtaking coasts both on the east and west, there is so much to do, see, and explore. The best part? It's all right here in our backyard - no passports required.

If you're craving an epic adventure this Summer but happen to have a not-so-epic budget, let your worries subside. Here are six tips on how to stretch your dollars and discover the glistening gems of America . . .
