I Got Cate Blanchett's Infamous "Penis Facial" - and It's Not What You Think
Image Source: Getty / Pascal Le Segretain
I'll do a lot of things to get a complexion that's as clear as Cate Blanchett's. I'm a fairly adventurous lady, so I'll subject my skin to needles, prodding, serums, or anything else the 49-year-old recommends. But I must admit even I took pause when I read this POPSUGAR headline: "Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock Got 'Penis Facials,' and We're as Confused as You Are." I wasn't really confused - a quick 4 a.m. search of PornHub proves that penis facials are totally a thing - I just didn't want to resort to such behavior for vanity's sake. (Though if you choose to indulge, more power to ya!) Luckily, Cate's ritual isn't what it sounds like.
The actress and a slew of other celebrities hit up the British-born facialist Georgia Louise, who owns a very chic New York City salon. She offers a Hollywood EGF Facial, and that acronym stands for epidermal growth factor. As Cate told Vogue Australia, "It smells a bit like sperm because of an enzyme, so Sandy [Sandra Bullock] refers to it as the penis facial."
First off, I volunteer to play third wheel on Cate's girl dates with Sandra. Second, Cate's juicy quote is a wee bit misleading. The ingredient isn't sperm. As the friendly folks at Georgia Louise were quick to clarify in a press release, "EGF, which is FDA-approved, is derived from the progenitor cells of the human fibroblast taken from Korean newborn baby foreskin - which helps to generate collagen and elastin."
After cleansing my skin and applying the exfoliating peel, it was penis o'clock.
How do you get said foreskin? It's taken from real, live Korean babies during circumcision (mazel!). Those stem cells are then harvested and multiplied through a machine called a centrifuge. Louise always likes to stress that the cells that end up in your skin aren't the OG infant ones but instead are clones made in a lab. A mixture of those stem cells and peptides goes into a microneedling wand that zaps the concoction into your skin, stimulates collagen production, and makes you look like Cate. I had to try for myself.

Louise's team was kind enough to squeeze me into a 9:30 a.m. appointment at the Upper East Side location. I was able to try this $650 treatment for the sake of journalism, and it began by meeting my facialist, a lovely Brit named Sarah Smith. She began by asking me if I had used retinol the night before - and I hadn't, because I am a responsible nugget. You're not supposed to use any products that contain this vitamin before the facial, as it can counteract with the TCA chemical peel that's used in this process. So fans of Sunday Riley's Luna, or any other trendy retinol cream, take note - you should put down product in the week leading up this treatment.
After cleansing my skin and applying the exfoliating peel, it was penis o'clock. I'd never microneedled before, but I'd read Kirbie Johnson's review of the procedure, which included a lot of blood and succeeded in scaring the sh*t out of me. The only thing I remember from AP Euro was what Queen Victoria supposedly told her nervous daughter on her wedding night: "Just lie on your back and think of England." So I did the same, thinking of my English rose Cate as the dick needles approached my face.
Queen Victoria told her nervous daughter on her wedding night, "Just lie on your back and think of England." So I did the same as the dick needles approached my face.
What followed was an experience I would never describe as "pleasant" but wasn't totally terrible, either. I felt some minor pricking from the device as Sarah dotted my entire face and neck with it. I felt some uncomfortable ticking around my décolletage, and it hurt around bonier parts of my face like my forehead, but nothing felt excruciating. Sarah told me that I had an impressive "tolerance" for microneedling, which made me very happy because it is a competition. One thing to note is that I'm prone to hormonal acne flare-ups on my left cheek, so Sarah stayed away from that area to prevent scarring.
After the poking, Sarah applied a gooey, soothing mask to my face, which felt like heaven over the chapped parts of my skin. Just when I thought the questionable part of the procedure (stabbing baby peen into my pores) was over, Sarah zipped a microcurrent through the mask. This weirdly relaxing process supposedly speeds up the healing process, but IMO, the true bonus is it makes you feel like a robot taking some "me time."
With that, I'd popped my penis facial virginity and was heading back to my office after playing celebrity for an hour. Sarah let me know that my face would be red for at least a day and instructed me to not wear any makeup for 24 hours, which sort of sucked because of the first part of this sentence. As you can see in the unfiltered, makeup-free (if you don't count my three-day-old eyeliner) photo below, there was a bit of peeling around my forehead, and my cystic acne came up to the surface.
Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Alaina Demopoulos
All I did that night was cleanse, and I woke up with substantially less redness. Just in time for a weekend trip to Vegas, my face had a soft flush, my pores were practically invisible, and I could fool the world into thinking my diet isn't just an endless rotation of string cheese and German beer.
If you can't burn one month's rent on an hour-long treatment, Bioeffect's EGF Serum ($155) contains the same skin-plumping ingredient - with a slight catch. It's a vegan product that's made from plants, not baby clones. Maybe that takes away a bit of the fun, but all that fun will come right back when you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror!

Wear These Fingerless Gloves During Your Gel Mani to Protect Against Harmful UV Lamps
I have few vices: I don't smoke, I keep my drinking to two margaritas tops at happy hour, and I stay away from (most) drugs. My one bad habit? Gel manicures, which beauty girls love because they're long-lasting, but some doctors advise against due to a plethora of health challenges. One of the scarier aspects of gels? Certain salons ask you to stick your fingers underneath a UV lamp to help seal and dry your new polish. (Others go for less harmful LED lights.)
Although the chance of developing a deadly cancer from curing lamps is low, it's still not an ideal scenario. One brand has found what it suggests to be a solution - fingerless gloves!
ManiGlovz ($25) was founded by Kim Motola, a self-professed "sunscreen fanatic" who felt uncomfortably hot during one session under a UV lamp. In response, she spent months researching the effects of lamps on skin and developed the UV 50+ material that makes up her gloves, which the company says protects against 98 percent of all UV rays.
Plus, each one comes in funky patterns such as pop art lips, mermaid's tail green, and a galactic space print. There's even a standard black for all you minimalists out there. Read on to see these accessories in action.
Don't Travel Overseas With the Wrong Hair Dryer - Shop These 7 Dual-Voltage Picks
If you're traveling abroad, there are so many important things to think about, from finding the perfect camera to making sure you have the right converter for power outlets. One thing we often overlook is our hair tools. In America, we use about 110 or 120 volts for our electricity, and in Europe, the volts used are twice as high, from 220 to 240. So if you try to use your US-made dryer overseas, it will most likely result in you blowing a fuse and often ruining your dryer.
To prevent this, many brands are now making travel-friendly dryers that come with dual-voltage options. These choices feature a button on them that you can simply switch back and fourth to change the amount of electricity they need. Take a look at our top picks.
6 Key Mistakes You Might Be Making With Concealer
It's not just enough to spend five minutes a day applying your makeup: you need to make sure you have the right products, tools, and techniques to make the most of your look. While concealer might seem simple, there's actually more to it than you think. When it comes to finding the perfect concealer for your skin and complexion, it's all about trial and error to see what works and what doesn't. You should also visit a makeup artist for advice if you're struggling to pick your favorite. Here are the worst mistakes you could be making when putting on concealer in the morning.

Exclusive: We Have a Lit-uation - Maybelline's Expanded Highlighter Range Is on FIRE!
Some news that just may be the high-light of your day: Maybelline is expanding its mega-popular Master Chrome Metallic luminizer range, and we've got all the details! The drugstore beauty brand launched the line last Fall, which currently includes trendy, icy options such as rose gold, iridescent lavender, and white opal. Now, Maybelline is taking a sharp turn in a warmer direction with the launch of its two luminizers, a bronze-gold and deep peach.
We first got an inkling that these highlighters were coming back in early April, when the brand teased swatches that had many comparing the shade to Fenty's famed Trophy Wife - but at a much more modest price tag of just $10.
Both the dark gold and punchy watermelon shades are similar to OG MasterChrome options - the formula is blendable, slides on like butter, and stays put once applied. No streaks here! Even I, a dyed-in-the-wool cream highlighter gal, admit that I want to cop the samples Maybelline sent over.
Read on to see the reflective swatches in action - then make it your mission to pick one of these up from your drugstore when they roll out in June.
Thandie Newton's Cannes Dress Paid a Powerful Tribute to the Black Male Star Wars Characters
All eyes were on Thandie Newton and her custom Vivienne Westwood gown while she walked the Cannes red carpet at the Solo: A Star Wars Story premiere on May 15. At first glance, the dress appears simply to be an elegant off-the-shoulder gold gown, but look closer and you'll notice action figure illustrations of the black male Star Wars characters, a significant statement for both the actress and the franchise.
Thandie's stylist, Erin Walsh, posted a sketch of the breathtaking dress on Instagram and revealed the inspiration behind it. "Thandie had the brilliant idea to make a dress covered in a print with photos of iconic black Star Wars characters!" Erin wrote in the caption. "She wanted to celebrate her role in the iconic history of the franchise!"
Thandie is the first black woman to have a leading role on screen in a Star Wars movie, which is definitely a part worth celebrating! Her gown is a nod to the black characters who came before hers - like Finn, Saw Gerrera, Mace Windu, Captain Panaka, and Lando Calrissian - and symbolizes a hopeful future for further diversity in the franchise with her character Val.
LaCroix Swimsuits Exist, So Take a Dip Dressed Like Your Favorite Sparkling Water
Nowadays it seems like almost everyone loves LaCroix . . . but do you really love LaCroix? Like, would you get a LaCroix-printed swimsuit? This is not a rhetorical question; I'm honestly asking because these one-piece suits from Public Space actually exist. Can I make a confession? I'm a sparkling-water novice (I know, I know), but I'm absolutely obsessed with these suits. The bright colors, high cut, and low back give these one-pieces an '80s vibe that even a Pamplemousse poser like myself can love. This Unspoken Rule About Heels Is the Reason Kristen Stewart Ditched Her Shoes at Cannes
Source: Getty / Loic Venance
Kristen Stewart made headlines at the Cannes Film Festival this week for taking her shoes off on the red carpet. And if you look back into the archives, you'll realize she did almost the same thing in 2016 when she swapped her black Christian Louboutins for blue Vans sneakers. Her decision is not just about comfort - it's about making a statement against the Cannes policy that requires women to wear high heels. Although the policy is more of an unspoken rule and isn't etched in stone like other parts of the Cannes dress code, it's become clear that women wearing heels are more welcome than those wearing flats.
In 2015, several women were reportedly denied access to the Carol premiere for wearing flats. Emily Blunt spoke out at the time, saying, "We shouldn't wear high heels. That's just my point of view - I love Converse sneakers. It's very disappointing." Kristen Stewart echoed that sentiment and said, "It has become really obvious that if [a man and I] were walking the red carpet together and someone stopped me and said, 'Excuse me, young lady, you're not wearing heels. You cannot come in.' Then [I'm going to say], 'Neither is my friend. Does he have to wear heels?'" Julia Roberts also got in on the action when she ditched her shoes to run up the stairs, although that could've been for pure comfort.

While high heels may be a welcome accessory for many women as they wear elaborate gowns - some of the best fashion can be found on the Cannes red carpet - others may want to wear flats for a number of reasons, including medical requirements.

The supermodel walked the Cannes Film Festival red carpet at the premiere for BlacKkKlansman in a sparkly silver gown by Elie Saab. (Kristen Stewart also attended the premiere in a similar minidress by Chanel and walked barefoot to make a statement about the film festival's controversial no-flats policy.)

I mean, we can hardly blame her for shoe-peating - they're possibly the most practical yet chic Summer shoes on God's green earth. Iskra walked the red carpet at the Sink or Swim premiere, showing off every angle of her gorgeous figure in a custom-made Justin Alexander design. The ivory gown featured countless beads and pearls intricately stitched from top to bottom.
"Thank you @justinalexander for custom making this dress. It's a shame how some designers still only have sample size gowns for red carpets so really means a lot for you to fit this for me #itsnotonesizefitsall #curvesatcannes," Iskra wrote on Instagram.

This $11 Sticky Bra From Amazon Actually Kept My Double Ds in Place
For my 25th birthday, I encountered a problem I've had many times since puberty: the special outfit I wanted to wear was nearly impossible to do so without a bra showing, but my large chest prevented me from going braless.
Many friends I went to college with frequently wore sticky bras, backless items that contain adhesive to stick to your breasts. I didn't think very highly of these glue-covered bras (I have memories of my friends panicking when humidity made them fall off) and thought there was no way they would stay on my double Ds.
When I finally decided on my perfect birthday outfit this year - a black velvet bustier bodysuit with gray track pants all from Bershka - I was desperate for a way to wear the bodysuit without the straps, sides, and back of my bra showing. I headed to Amazon to try to find a cheap solution to the problem and looked through some options.
I found a pull-string sticky bra that promised to create cleavage while holding up my breasts and decided to give it a go. The Suroomy Silicone Invisible Bra Self Adhesive Strapless Reusable Push-Up Bra ($11) cost me less than $15 and was available in a D-cup, so worst-case scenario, I wouldn't have wasted much money.
Before my guests arrived for my party, I opened the packaging of the bra and peeled off the paper from the sticky side. I held up each breast one at a time with my hand, pressed down each cup, and then pulled the tie in the middle. Although the cups didn't really cover my entire breast, I was thrilled with the results. The adhesive stayed on throughout a night of dancing and celebrating, and my well-documented outfit looked perfect for Instagram.
I'm completely shocked that the product worked - and I'm never going back. Thanks to this bra, I never have to have the classic big-breast worry of "but I won't be able to wear a bra with that!" again.
Amazon's Prime Wardrobe Is About to Save Your Closet and Your Wallet
You know what the hardest part of shopping online is for me? I never fully know how something is going to fit. Hitting "purchase" requires both a trust in the brand or retailer I'm buying from and an assurance that everything I buy is actually returnable for a full refund. For whatever reason, I'm likely to return at least one thing from any online order. But not anymore. I'm going to let you in on a little secret: Amazon has quietly rolled out a brand-new feature for Prime members that takes so much of the hassle out of online shopping. Meet Prime Wardrobe.
The program is centered on the genius concept of "try before you buy." Basically, you can pick between three and eight items to add to your box, and once you receive your shipment, you have seven days to try on your clothes and decide if you like them. The shipment comes with a prepaid return label, so just send back the clothes you didn't like. And here's the kicker: after the seven days, Amazon will only charge you for the items you keep! Now there's no more waiting for the refund to hit your credit card. Once you've returned the clothes you didn't like, you can curate your next box. It's that simple.
We're so excited to start shopping this new feature. It has plenty of chic designers to choose from and carries options for women, men, children, and babies. So now you can shop for your entire family, or just yourself. If you're a Prime member, you can request access to this feature here. Ahead, we've curated some of our favorite pieces that you can buy via Prime Wardrobe, but whatever your style is, it's got options for you. Happy shopping!

What's It Like to Kiss Ryan Reynolds? Deadpool 2's Morena Baccarin Has a Hilarious Answer
Show of hands: who here would like to make out with Ryan Reynolds? Like, if Blake Lively gave you and her husband a hall pass, and there were no repercussions, just a good ole smooch - would you do it? We'll go ahead and assume everyone's hands just shot in the air. But would you still make out with him if he's in costume as the disfigured and bald Deadpool? Yes? Well, we have a little preview of what you can expect, courtesy of Reynolds's Deadpool 2 costar Morena Baccarin.
In a recent conversation with the actress, who portrays Wade Wilson's rebellious girlfriend, Vanessa, in the Celion Dion-packed sequel, she told POPSUGAR that making out with Reynolds under all of the makeup and prosthetics was like kissing a "massive latex condom." Sounds . . . interesting?
"He smells like rubber the whole movie," Baccarin explained during our interview. "He's like sweating in latex through the entire film. It's like kissing a combination of a pizza pie and a condom, if that makes any sense."
If you haven't seen the first film, Deadpool, Wade (Reynolds) is diagnosed with terminal cancer shortly after proposing to Vanessa. Desperate to cure his disease, he undergoes an extremely dangerous and experimental procedure that leaves him cancer-free but with mutant powers and serious burn scars all over his body. Although he's worried Vanessa won't accept his new appearance, it soon becomes clear that nothing can prevent her intense attraction to him - not even a face that "looks like an avocado had sex with an older, more disgusting avocado."
The sequel picks up where the couple left off: crazy-passionate about each other, regardless of Wade's appearance. While acting alongside a makeup-clad Reynolds was sometimes challenging for Baccarin - "It was tough to see through all of that with the person you're acting with" - she did acknowledge that the couple's disregard for Wade's appearance is what makes their love so pure.
"It speaks to the love that these characters have for each other," Baccarin explained. "It isn't about looks. Yeah, they're both attractive, they're both into each other, but it goes beyond external qualities."
While Wade and Vanessa may seem like two love-struck teenagers, their relationship breaks away from the typical romance mold you see in superhero movies. With a juicy, and sometimes hilarious, sex life and little regard for what people think of them, Wade and Vanessa are anything but your typical Superman and Lois Lane dynamic. It's hard not to envy what they have.
"They're honest with themselves and each other," Baccarin said. Honesty and passionate sex? Kind of makes up for the latex condom-like lips.
Alessandra Ambrosio's Summer Sandals Are the Type You Can Wear With, Well, Just About Everything
If we had to guess, Alessandra Ambrosio's suitcase-packing list for the Cannes Film Festival probably looked a little something like this:
- Supersexy dresses for turning heads on the red carpet, as per usual

Rita Moreno: I'll Never Forget Trump's Words About Puerto Rico "As Long As I Live"
Actress and activist Rita Moreno is a living legend who, at the age of 86, is still tirelessly speaking her mind and advocating for women, immigrants, and her fellow Puerto Ricans. She herself has experienced racism firsthand, after moving from Puerto Rico to New York City in the mid-1930s at age 5.
"You Feel Very Inferior"
"What happens is that when you're a child and you are told in so many words that you don't have value and that you don't have worth, as a child you're a very tender creature. You accept that," Moreno told POPSUGAR. "You don't know why people don't like you, but they don't."
Moreno said the discrimination took a real toll. "As you grow up thinking that you're an unworthy person, you have a lot of problems," she said. "You become defensive, you feel very inferior to everyone. Ultimately that sent me into psychotherapy many years later, which is the best thing I could have done, because it really helped me quite a bit."
On May 2, Moreno, the first Latina EGOT winner - meaning she's won Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award - added another accolade to her name. Moreno was one of dozens of people who received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, given to those who embody diversity and tolerance in American life. Previous winners include Elie Wiesel, Malala Yousafzai, and former Vice President Joe Biden.
"It never occurred to me that I would even been considered for something like this," Moreno told PopSugar ahead of the ceremony on Saturday.
An award celebrating America's immigrant past and present comes at a difficult time. It's impossible not to be moved when stepping from the ferry into the Ellis Island Immigration Museum and former baggage room. Under a spotlight in the middle of the room, there's a battered leather trunk, once bound for Newark and marked with Old World names. Newly-arrived immigrants on the island, pulled together from every corner of the earth, stare with wide eyes from photos on the wall and dare you to feel the terror and excitement of this unknown land they found themselves in.
Today, reading their faces takes on a particular resonance. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) recently removed the phrase "nation of immigrants" from its mission statement. Hundreds of children have been taken from their parents' arms at the U.S. border since last October. There is a stark, painful disconnect here that is hard to ignore when 40 percent of Americans can trace their lineage back to this place.
The ceremony took place in Ellis Island's Great Hall, under American flags hung high along the walls and stars projected onto the tiled ceiling. A group of men burst into a spontaneous rendition of "God Bless America," and, later, a man robustly clapped at the mention of "Ireland" by one of the speakers. In this Great Hall, the first stop and passage for 12 million immigrants when they reached American shores, Moreno stepped on stage. Her words echoed "The New Colossus," the plaque on the base of the Statue of Liberty, which has represented the promise of a fresh start for millions.
"Yearning masses will always huddle on the border of hope," she said.
"My Jaw Literally Dropped"
Moreno is an outspoken activist, particularly when it comes to her homeland. Puerto Rico continues to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, and as many as 23,000 homes are still without power eight months later. Moreno visited Puerto Rico late last year. She described President Donald Trump's behavior and lack of action for the island "disgraceful" and "sin vergüenza," or "shameless." Trump, she said, "has single-handedly made this country into a little republic."
"What really made me even more angry and upset is that the governor of Puerto Rico [Ricardo Rossello] didn't say anything," said Moreno. "I will never, as long as I live, forget President Trump's words: 'Katrina, now that was a disaster.' My jaw literally dropped and I fully expected the governor to say something, and he didn't. I know he was standing between a rock and a hard place because he needed help, but he needed to say something."
"People here need to know that we, here, are not doing much of anything. We had promised a certain amount of funds, which have not been forthcoming," said Moreno. "I think we're going to have to beg and wheedle in order to get any kind of funds to Puerto Rico, and I don't think even then they will have enough."
"That's My Truth"
As she continues to be a voice for Puerto Rico, Moreno is also looking to the future, specifically the highly-anticipated Steven Spielberg remake of West Side Story. Moreno won an Oscar in 1962 for her portrayal of Anita in the film, but said she doesn't know enough young actors to suggest who should reprise the role. She's confident, however, that Spielberg will "cast it very carefully."
Beyond her advocacy for Puerto Rico and immigrants, Moreno's also made headlines this year for rewearing the dress she wore to the 1962 Oscars - and won a statue in - to this year's ceremony. And last week, she shared intimate details about her relationships with Marlon Brando and Elvis Presley with talk show host Wendy Williams. (Brando, she said, was better in bed.)
"I got a very nasty reply on Twitter from a guy who said, 'How dare she talk about Elvis that way?'" said Moreno. "It's true, though? That's my truth."
Last October, Moreno joined the ever-expanding chorus of women in the entertainment industry who have spoken out about her experience of sexual harassment, and their treatment at the hands of Hollywood's most powerful men.
Moreno currently appears in One Day At A Time on Netflix, which was recently renewed for a third season. In the updated version of the 1975 series, she plays Lydia Riera, a mouthy, confident grandmother to a Cuban-American family, including her Army veteran daughter who grapples with PTSD. Moreno was conscious about not making her character a stereotype, noting that the entertainment industry still has "a ways to go" when casting roles for Latina actresses.
"Lydia is shameless. Lydia's a braggart, Lydia is vain, Lydia has a big mouth. That's what's so much fun about her," Moreno said. "She's also a very sexual woman. I love that about her. That was done at my request. I'm 86, but everything hasn't turned to dust down there."
When Jennifer Lopez Was Told to "Lose a Few Pounds," She Responded in the Most Badass J Lo Way!
Jennifer Lopez will not change for anyone! When first making a name for herself in the entertainment industry, she let her fans know that "Jenny From the Block" was staying true to her roots. She promised that fame wouldn't change her attitude and huge heart, but now we're learning that J Lo refused to change another important part of her: her curves. In a recent interview with InStyle regarding her new makeup line with Inglot, the 48-year-old superstar discussed body image and how she helped curvier women feel more acknowledged in the industry.
J Lo admitted that she "got a lot of flak" for her body type when she was first starting out from (mindless) people in the industry. "They'd say, 'You should lose a few pounds,' or 'You should do this or do that.'" she recalled. "It finally got to the point that I was like, 'This is who I am. I'm shaped like this.' Everybody I grew up with looked like that, and they were all beautiful to me. I didn't see anything wrong with it. I still don't!"
Not only is she one of the most respected and talented women of our generation, but she's praised for her body and timeless beauty. For J Lo, self-love and body positivity were two things that were ingrained in her at a very young age, and she never though twice about it. "My generation was very much focused on size 0 models. It was just so unattainable for most normal people, including me," she said. "My mom and my grandmother were the ones who drilled into me, 'This is how we are, and this is what's beautiful.'"
She added: "My dad loved my mom's body - all the men in our family loved the women's bodies. Being curvy or not being 6 feet tall was never a bad thing; it was actually something that was celebrated." . . . as it should be! J Lo was just being herself, but in reality, she was helping more people than she could've imagined.
"So many people have come up to me over the years - famous people, people I meet on the street, fans, everybody - and they say that very thing: 'Thank you so much. I have the same type of body. I used to think I was fat, but now I feel beautiful,'" J Lo shared, adding, "I wasn't really trying to send a message. I was just being myself." And we are SO glad she never succumbed to the absurd comments of people telling her to "lose a few pounds," because she is an icon and always will be.

Carnitas, Al Pastor, Barbacoa: Here's the 411 on Mexican Meats
The beer-drinking backdrop of a hot afternoon or evening would pair perfectly with a festive Mexican feast of tacos and grilled meats. But with a menagerie of Spanish monikers from carnitas to carne asada, taco meat terminology can get a bit confusing. Here's the breakdown of Mexican meats:
- Carne asada: Grilled, marinated pieces of beef (typically sirloin or rib) served inside burritos and tacos.
- Carnitas: Shoulder of pork that's been seasoned, braised until tender with lard and herbs (oregano, marjoram, bay leaves, garlic), pulled apart, and then oven-roasted until slightly crisp, then eaten alone or used as a filling for tacos, tamales, tortas, and burritos.
- Al pastor: Crisp-thin shavings of vertical spit-roasted pork, marinated with guajillo chiles and achiote, then served on tortillas. Pastor means "shepherd," the name given to Lebanese merchants who immigrated to Mexico City in the early 1900s, bringing the concept of shawarma with them.
- Cochinita pibil: Whole suckling pig or pork shoulder that's marinated in citrus with achiote, then wrapped in banana leaves and roasted. Historically, it's buried in a pit with a fire at the bottom.
- Barbacoa: Traditionally, beef cheek and head that's covered in leaves from the maguey plant, then slow cooked over a wood fire in a pit in the ground. In America today, it also refers to spicy, shredded, slow-braised beef that's been made tender, then pulled apart.
Got all that? What Mexican meat goes in between your tortillas?

32 Signs You're an Introvert
People are great - in small doses. I value my loved ones just like everyone else, but there are (a lot of) times when I need to retreat and recharge my energy. I'm a true introvert at heart. Introverts value their alone time, their comfort zones, and their way of doing things. They are great listeners, deep thinkers, and good judges of character. If this sounds familiar to you, you might be an introvert, too. Here are some qualities that all introverts can relate to.
- Crowds stress you out. Parades, concerts, big parties - these are not an introvert's idea of a good time.
- Your alone time is precious to you. For introverts, alone time is like the air you breathe. It's not negotiable. Introverts are often alone but rarely ever lonely.
- You're a great listener. Introverts listen first and speak second. This trait is especially valuable within the relationships that introverts build with friends, family, and significant others, because they are people who others feel they can come to for great advice and thoughtful dialogue.
- You form deep, meaningful relationships with people. You may not have a ton of friends, but you are very close to the ones you have. Extroverts are known for having multiple friend groups and a long list of engagements and events, and they generally love being around people. Introverts care less about the scope of their friend group but rather are more interested in the depth of the friendships they take the time and effort to form.
- You prefer hanging out with a small group of people you know. Introverts don't have that much interest in meeting new people. While this is often an extrovert's idea of a good time, introverts prefer to be surrounded by a small group of people they already know and trust.
- You're easily distracted. You're good at multitasking, but because there is so much going on inside your head, it's easy to get distracted and overstimulated by your environment. This is why introverts work well alone!
- You'd rather stay at home than go out. You are a notorious homebody. What's outside in the world that you can't create for yourself in your own home? Introverts look forward to days spent in their comfort zone, doing whatever they want for however long they want to - without distractions and without worrying about what anyone else is doing.
- You're able to look at the big picture. You have perspective and often think beyond the day-to-day, looking ahead to the future, to abstract situations and concepts, and to how decisions you make now will later affect you and others.
- You often overanalyze things. Introverts think. A lot. They agonize over every little detail of conversation from weeks before, they worry about things that haven't happened yet, they ponder concepts and theories just for the fun of it. There are always wheels turning in an introvert's mind - a trait that is both a blessing and curse.
- You recharge your energy when you're alone. The biggest difference between introverts and extroverts is how they recharge their energy. Extroverts seek interactions with other people to feel renewed, whereas introverts need to get away from others and renew their energy by recharging from within themselves.
- You hate being the center of attention. If you've ever had a surprise party thrown in your honor and still cringe at the memory of it, you're probably an introvert. You don't like for the focus to be on you at any time, and you do whatever you can to point the spotlight anywhere but on yourself.
- You often feel awkward during and after social interactions. Meeting new people is NOT your favorite thing. Social interactions - especially with people you don't know - are something that you generally dread. It's not that you don't like people, it's that you overanalyze the situation, and the energy it takes to be "on" during social interactions can drain you down to your last drop.
- Silence between you and a loved one doesn't make you uncomfortable. Many extroverts like to insert conversation into every moment, because silence seems like a waste to them. On the opposite end of the spectrum, introverts savor silence. They are happy to sit with loved ones and not speak, believing in only exerting the energy required for conversation if it's truly worth it.
- You're a really good judge of other people's character. Because introverts listen, avoid the spotlight, and seek meaningful relationships, they are naturally good judges of character. You have the ability to see beyond the exterior and are able to call a person's true nature pretty much from your first impression of them.
- Being around people drains your energy. While you are totally capable of being around people and socializing (and enjoy it!), you have a limit. After a certain period of time, you feel like your mental battery is drained. In order to recharge, you need to retreat to your comfort zone for some much-needed alone time.
- Your personal space is VERY important to you. Introverts love their personal space. In fact, they need it. Your personal space is a comfort zone of your own making, and you don't want anyone else encroaching on that sacred space unless you give them permission to.
- You usually think before you speak. Introverts are thinkers before they are talkers. You typically analyze everything in your head and sort out your thoughts and feelings before verbalizing them.
- You're extremely loyal to your loved ones. Because it takes a lot for you to let someone in, once you do, you are extremely loyal to your loved ones. Introverts are protective over the people they care about and are willing to walk through fire for them.
- You're in touch with your emotions. You are in touch with your feelings and know how to maintain a balance in your life. You're in tune with your energy level, with your emotional and mental states, and with what you want/need. You know (and understand) yourself very well.
- You savor your comfort zones. Introverts are open to new experiences, but they also cherish what they know. The familiarity is comforting and stabilizing to them.
- People mistake you for being shy. Introverts are often perceived as being shy because they are sometimes quiet and not as outwardly social as extroverts. However, many introverts aren't shy at all - they are just waiting to put time and energy into the right thing, rather than everything.
- You strive for success. You are driven, balanced, and independent - qualities that set you up for the success that you value.
- You are very decisive. You know what you like, what you don't like, what you want, and what you don't. While willing to try new things, introverts are also sure of what they know and are rarely indecisive about anything - big or small.
- You're independent. You play well with others, in your career, in school, and in group situations. Because introverts are great judges of character and good listeners, they are definitely able to work cooperatively. However, because they are easily distracted and overstimulated, they are more productive and successful when they work independently.
- You're good at thinking outside the box. A strong characteristic of introverts is their ability to think outside the box. This is especially an asset in an introvert's professional life but is also applicable outside the workplace. You are never held back by perceived limitations; you just think of another creative way around an obstacle.
- You absolutely hate small talk. Chit-chat feels like a colossal waste of time to introverts. Instead, you crave meaningful connections with people, with the potential for forming long-lasting relationships rather than more surface-level interactions.
- You feel relieved when people cancel plans. Introverts enjoy interactions with others, but they also anticipate the inevitable burnout that comes from spending too much time being "on." Because of this, you can't help but feel relieved when people cancel plans with you - it means you're off the hook.
- You can be intense. Introverts can sometimes take things (and themselves) pretty seriously. You love in-depth conversations, thinking critically, and theorizing about concepts in the abstract. You love reading, watching thought-provoking movies and TV shows, and overall seeking meaning in everything.
- You're in a close relationship or friendship with an extrovert. Extroverts are essential parts of an introvert's life, because they are very good at pulling introverts out of their shells, of persuading them to engage in activities they may not have otherwise, and of overall encouraging them to have fun and be outgoing. You are able to feed off an extrovert's energy, while still being able to retreat into yourself when you need to.
- You have a creative outlet of some kind. Many introverts are writers, artists, or creative in some way. Because their minds are always working and an inner dialogue is always running, a creative outlet can be extremely productive (and often necessary).
- You're a planner. Introverts don't usually like surprises, so they like to have a plan at all times in order to make sure that things go as smoothly as possible.
- You're very good at making yourself happy. You don't depend on other people to bring you joy; you're able to find joy within yourself and in the little things around you. This is one of the most valuable traits introverts possess, because they are capable of finding happiness no matter where they are and no matter who they're with.
