So What Exactly Is the Difference Between THC and CBD? We Have Answers

If you're familiar with marijuana, you may already know what we're about to tell you. But no matter if you're for or against medical or recreational marijuana, learning about its components is undoubtedly fascinating. Because it's so complex, there are many different uses for marijuana. Heck, you can even match the right strain of weed to your zodiac sign. Or use weed to spice up your sex life. Or try medical cannabis to boost your workout.

All that brings us to THC. It's an acronym for its full chemical name: tetrahydrocannabinol. It's a cannabinoid compound that comes from the resin of the cannabis plant, and most notably, THC is the part of marijuana that's psychoactive. CBD oil, in contrast, is a different component of cannabis and is like liquid Xanax from Mother Nature, if you ask us. (Studies show CBD and THC each act on the brain in different ways.)

Simply put: THC alters your mood, and you get high. Along with that, you may also feel relaxed, happy, and/or snacky. If you're having problems with nausea, THC will also help deliver relief. Take too much, though, and you may swing the other way and experience not-so-pleasant side effects like hallucinations, anxiety, or even panic. In stark contrast, CBD has no psychoactive properties. Users of CBD often say that when taking the compound, you don't feel anything. Instead you feel the absence of things, most notably being anxiety.

Interestingly, levels of THC in marijuana today are nearly three times what they were in the 1990s. Be aware, though, that how you take marijuana affects levels of THC in your bloodstream. If you eat edibles, THC's effect is delayed by 30 minutes to an hour thanks to your body's need to digest the food, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Less THC also makes it into your bloodstream with an edible, blunting its effects compared to smoking. That said, it's all too easy to think you haven't taken enough, overcompensate, and experience ill side effects, NIDA warns.

All that is to say, whatever decisions you make (and depending on the laws in your state), the most important thing is knowing what's going into your body. With that info, you can make the best decision for you.

Sip These Teas to Soothe Your Stomach, Lose Weight, and Get Clear Skin

Tea is a soothing Winter drink, and it can have pretty miraculous healing properties. Did you know the teabag you choose can give you a unique result? Whether your goal is calming down, perking up, or recovering, there's a tea for that.

We asked tea expert Kristina Richens - a director at The Republic of Tea, certified tea specialist from Front Range Herbal Institute, and speaker from the SF International Tea Festival - to share what she's learned from her travels to China, India, Japan, and South Africa. She spoke about which teas you should brew up for each time of the day, as well as which ones help with certain physical goals (even if your goal is just to fall asleep!).

  • Supercharge Your Morning: Black or Green Tea. The caffeine content with L-theanine (present in these teas) will give you a calm state of alertness.
  • Get Through an Afternoon Slump: Green Tea With Ginkgo Biloba. Kristina told us that green tea can enhance performance, while ginkgo biloba can keep your memory sharp.
  • Recover After a Workout: Black Tea. A cup of black tea has 88 milligrams of potassium, which contributes to muscular recovery.
  • Reduce Stress and Anxiety: Green Tea, Lavender, or Chamomile. Time to unwind. "Chamomile and lavender are known as nerve-soothers and calming herbs," she said. Lavender and lavender oil are great ingredients to look for when relieving anxiety, and green tea and matcha also promote relaxation.
  • Snooze Soundly: Chamomile or Valerian. Soothing and mellowing chamomile and valerian root will help you slip into a peaceful slumber. Valerian root, referred to as nature's Valium, is a common ingredient in sleep supplements thanks to its relaxing properties. "Valerian is also great for drinking before bed as it won't interfere with REM sleep," Kristina said.
  • Slim Down: Dandelion or Peppermint. Dandelion has been said to help eliminate excess water weight, as well as aid in digestion - a key component in weight loss. "Dandelion's use traces back to the 10th century when Arabian physicians revered the root for its cleansing properties and as a natural aid for digestion," she said. Peppermint tea can help curb your appetite and support digestion as well. In herbal blends, Kristina says to look for ingredients like "gymnema leaves, which are known as the 'destroyer of sugar' in Ayurvedic medicine," and "cordyceps, a Chinese medicinal herb, [which] may boost energy and endurance, and can help rev up your internal engine and increase metabolism."
  • Clear Skin: Rooibos or Green Tea. Antioxidant-packed rooibos and green tea can both help alleviate acne, pimples, sunburns, and uneven skin.
  • Soothe an Upset Stomach: Dandelion or Ginger. The dandelion root is a natural aid for digestion and has cleansing properties, while ginger root is known to settle a stomach in all its forms.

Fettuccine and Tagliatelle Are Not the Same Thing . . . Right?

Pasta-lovers, it's time to test your knowledge. Fettuccine and tagliatelle are two forms of long, thick-cut pasta you've probably seen on restaurant menus and eaten plenty of times, but do you know the real difference? If your answer is "no," you're on to something . . . because there's actually no difference at all. As I learned during my trip to Casa Buitoni in Tuscany (among other things, like how to make pasta from scratch), this popular cut of pasta is named two different things based on region. It's called fettuccine in Rome and Southern Italy, and it's referred to as tagliatelle in the Northern regions of Italy. But it's the exact same thing! As a self-proclaimed pasta addict who eats Italian food 99 percent of the time, I have to say this information even surprised me. Now I'll never confuse the two on a menu again.

Prince Harry Taught His Personal Chef a Funny Cooking Lesson at Just 10 Years Old

Prince Harry's title might as well have "bacon master" added to it. While the soon-to-be-husband of Meghan Markle has many accomplishments under his belt, he taught quite the practical cooking lesson to his own personal chef when he was only 10 years old. In a phone interview with the chef, Darren McGrady, who cooked for the British royal family for 15 years, I learned about a funny memory Darren has about Harry and breakfast. If you're a fan of microwaving bacon instead of waiting patiently for oven-roasted bacon, you'll totally relate.

"I remember Harry coming back from America - they'd been to one of the theme parks - and he came into the kitchen with the princess [Diana], and it was breakfast time. He said, 'If you take the bacon and put it on a paper towel in the microwave, it makes it really crispy and even better.' And I go, 'What do you know? You're like 10 years old! You have no idea how to cook,'" Darren said.

"When he was gone, I tried it, and it worked," the chef continued. "Prince Harry taught me to make that - crispy bacon." Can you imagine little Harry schooling a well-seasoned chef in the kitchen? Now I know that roast chicken isn't the only thing he's a pro at cooking.

The Queen Is a "Chocoholic," Plus More Food Facts You Didn't Know About the British Royals

Being the personal chef to the British royal family is undoubtedly one of the most interesting jobs in the world. Darren McGrady knows exactly what that's like, because he cooked for Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Diana, and Princes William and Harry for 15 years. It's safe to say he knows the eating habits of each of them, and it's always fun finding out what you might have in common with the royals (such as, you know, the fact that William and Harry love pizza too). I chatted with the acclaimed chef, who created a fun royal-wedding breakfast menu with Kellogg's, and he shared a few throwback tidbits.

The 1 Difference Between Harry and William

"When I cooked for them, they were royal princes, but they had children's palates, so as much as [the] nanny in the nursery wanted them to eat all their green vegetables, they were happy with a bowl of cereal. They would have any sort of fried chicken, potato skins, and all those sort of things. They loved the comfort foods. I think one of the differences is William doesn't like the spices too much; he wasn't really into the spicier foods, whereas Harry is a big fan of curry. Also pizza - both boys love pizza."

Princess Diana Didn't Eat Red Meat

"The princess didn't eat red meat at all, but William and Harry would have [beef tenderloin] quite a bit. They liked baby back ribs, so I'd have to cook those a lot."

The Queen LOVES Chocolate

"For lunch, the queen would eat anything off the estate - salmon, venison, grouse. Also, she's a chocoholic! She would have as much chocolate as possible."

Roast Chicken Is a Staple

Darren shared his roast chicken recipe that he made for the family all the time. Since Prince Harry grew up on it, it's no surprise that his proposal to Meghan Markle included roast chicken. Darren said, "I'd do roasted chicken, but I'd take the breast off and the skin off and serve that to the princess [Diana] so it would just be all protein. And then the boys got the legs and all the crispy skin. Meghan is super health-conscious, too, and I can imagine [Harry] taking the breast off and taking the skin off just like I did for his mother."

11 Modifications You Didn't Know You Could Make at Starbucks

Whether you're more of an iced-coffee or grande-nonfat-mocha-no-whip type of Starbucks customer, there are easy ways to customize your drink to match your preference. While you might not find these modifications on the menu, that doesn't mean you can't make them at the register. Here's what to keep in mind the next time you find yourself in line at Starbucks and want a drink that's specifically tailored to your needs.

  1. Ask for light ice.
Not enough liquid and too much ice in your drink? Ask for light ice next time and you'll get more of the drink itself.
  2. Order your latte extra hot.
Ever feel like your hot coffee is cold by the time you get to the office? You can order your latte "extra hot" at the register, and the barista will steam the milk longer to increase the temperature.
  3. Specify unsweetened.
Certain Starbucks drinks are sneakily sweetened, including the iced coffee, iced teas, and the Green Tea Latte. For example, Starbucks's matcha powder contains sugar, and the Green Tea Latte typically has more sugar added to it. The iced coffee already comes with two pumps of Classic, aka simple syrup, so if you order it with two pumps, you're actually getting four. The default for a tall iced tea drink is three pumps of classic. If you'd rather have unsweetened drinks, be sure to specify that when you order.
  4. Customize your milk preference.
ICYMI, Starbucks has almond milk and coconut milk! There's also soy milk as another dairy-free option. Starbucks uses 2 percent milk in all drinks unless you specify otherwise, so speak up if you want whole milk, nonfat, or plant-based milk.
  5. Order a tall coffee in a grande cup.
Certain baristas might discourage this, but it's a common thing to order. To avoid wasting coffee by pouring out enough for milk, just order a smaller size coffee in a cup the next size up. This will give you more space than asking for "room."
  6. Order the "short" size.
Did you know a size smaller than the tall exists at Starbucks? While not listed on most menus, there is a size called the short, which is eight ounces and costs $2 for a drip coffee.
  7. Ask for no water for a stronger tea flavor.
Starbucks adds water to the cup of any iced tea drink to dilute it, so ask for no water if you want a stronger flavor.
  8. Ask for an extra shot.
Tall lattes come with one shot of espresso, grande espresso drinks come with two, and venti drinks come with two (hot) or three (iced). If it's just one of those days and you need an extra boost of caffeine, you can add another shot to any drink for 60 cents.
  9. Specify the number of syrup pumps.
When you order any drink that comes with a syrup flavor, a tall will have three, a grande will have four, and a venti will have five or six, depending on hot or iced, respectively. You can either add more for no extra cost or ask for fewer pumps if you want it less sweet.
  10. Ask for a different kind of sweetener.
You can ask for syrups, sugar, raw sugar, honey, Sweet and Low, Equal, or Splenda in any drink. You can also inquire about the sugar-free syrup options, like raspberry and vanilla, as well as the seasonal syrup options like peppermint.
  11. Order hot tea over ice.
If you're in the mood for a green tea or herbal tea but would rather have it cold than hot, you can ask for it served on ice. The barista will steep the tea and pour it in a plastic cup filled with ice, which takes about five minutes.

How to Make a Perfect Roast Chicken, According to the Royal Family's Former Personal Chef

Roast chicken with vegetables is one of those foolproof meals that everyone turns to occasionally - including the royal family. I got the chance to speak to Darren McGrady, who was the personal chef to the British royal family for 15 years, and he let me in on his secrets to cooking a simple chicken that he used to serve to brothers William and Harry and their mom, Princess Diana (without the skin for the princess). Darren also reminded me that Prince Harry did indeed propose to Meghan Markle with roast chicken - it's good enough to impress Her Royal Highness, so take notes! "People overthink chicken," the chef said before sharing his five steps to nailing it every time.

  1. "Heat the oven to 425°F."
  2. "Take the chicken out of the refrigerator, and then dry it with paper towels; pat it dry."
  3. "Then sprinkle it with salt - no fat, absolutely no fat at all."
  4. "Then put it onto a cooling rack onto a baking sheet so that the air can circulate underneath it."
  5. "And then put it in the oven for an hour, and don't turn it at all. After an hour, anything from a two-and-a-half- to four-pound chicken will come out absolutely moist and perfect on the inside and crispy on the outside."

Easy enough, right? Patting the outside dry ensures the skin has a chance to react to the heat and develop a golden-brown, crispy exterior. And because chicken skin has its own flavorful fat, it doesn't even need butter or olive oil. Although the chef's days of cooking in the royal family's kitchen are over, he's using his culinary skills for Saturday's royal wedding by making a menu of themed treats with Kellogg's, including Lemon Luster Wedding Cake, a Special Krown Breakfast Bowl, Stately Scones, and Majestic Pops with caramel and bananas. You can score a reservation on OpenTable for the celebratory viewing party in NYC as you gear up for Harry and Meghan's big day.

8 Easy Ways to Instantly Boost Your Self-Confidence

Self-doubt weighing you down? Don't worry; we've all been there before and can understand how frustrating those thoughts can be. But the good news is you don't have to continue walking under rain clouds of negativity. Despite contrary belief, self-confidence is a skill set rather than a character trait. And it's one you can easily teach yourself!

So forget the notion that confidence is something people are born with. If you're seeking to boost your self-esteem, below are eight quick actions you can take to become more confident ASAP.

1. Sit up straight.
Once again, Mom was right. According to research, sitting with good posture will not only lead to more confident, positive thoughts, but it will also increase your overall mood. So the next time you find yourself slumping or slouching, remember your mom's advice: roll back those shoulders, open up your chest, and sit up tall.

2. Get caffeinated.
Lover of lattes or all things coffee? Well you're in luck, as caffeine has been proven to increase energy, alertness, and yes, even confidence. So go ahead; guzzle down that extra cup of joe.

3. Break a sweat.
We all know exercising is good for your physical well-being, but did you know working out on a regular basis can work wonders on your mental health, too? Studies have shown breaking even the slightest of sweats can lead to more confidence, not to mention less stress.

4. Spritz on your favorite fragrance.
Need another excuse to splurge on your favorite fragrance? Fragrance expert and founder of Note Fragrances Danielle Fleming states that aromas play a huge part in how you feel and can instantly elicit a range of emotions, including feeling more relaxed, happy, and confident.

5. Visualize greatness.
If you're in a time crunch but need a quick confidence-booster, consider simply closing your eyes and calling upon your imagination. Prep your mind for mental success by picturing yourself conquering a personal goal. Remember the power of visualization: seeing is believing. The more you visualize achievement, the more you'll come to expect success, and this mindset can only lead to greater feelings of self-assurance.

6. Jam out.
Not only can listening to upbeat music instantly uplift your mood, but turning up the tunes can also make you feel more powerful. And who doesn't love a good jam session?

7. Wear a smile.
Don't hide those pearly whites from the world any longer. Instead, showcase them for all to see by wearing a smile. In doing so, you will appear both confident and composed, and trust me, people will take notice. But don't just think smiling only has external effects. Research shows smiling can shed internal signs of stress, making you feel happier and more relaxed.

8. Be your own cheerleader.
And finally, don't forget to cheer yourself on. Talk to yourself. Think positive thoughts. Utilize the power of self-affirmations and focus on the good. What makes you you? Look yourself in the mirror and tell that person you see how awesome YOU are. Post sticky notes around your home to remind yourself, too, because the more often you practice self-kindness, the faster you will believe it!

If You Do This 1 Disney World Vacation Hack, You're Guaranteed to Have the Best Time

Planning a trip to Disney World can feel like an overwhelming task. Sure, it's fun and truly makes everyone's dreams come true (it's the happiest place on Earth, after all), but getting there and feeling like you're getting the most out of your trip can be anxiety-inducing. There are a million tips out there for how to plan a Disney vacation the right way, but trying to incorporate all those tips might just increase your stress levels more than assuage them.

So, from a mom who's been there, here's the one and only hack you really need to make your trip to Disney World as unforgettable as you hope it'll be: focus on booking three things - lodging, dining, and FastPass+ - as early as the park will allow; then let the rest go. As my mom reminded me before my daughter's first trip to Disney, "If you go on three rides, it will still be the best day of her life." I agree, but getting on the rides she wanted, plus having a place to eat and sleep is kind of important, too.

Here's the bare minimum of what you need to stress about to make your trip as magical as possible. Focus on these three things, and you're golden.

Lodging

Start researching your Disney resort options as soon as you know you're planning a trip. There are so many places to stay within Walt Disney World at a wide range of price points that move depending on demand, so do your research to find the right spot for your family. If you're booking your lodging online, you can't do so until Disney releases the next year's rates, which is usually in August of the previous year (for example, if you're going in February 2019, you won't be able to book until August 2018).

However, you can call Disney before that and make a room-only reservation. They will charge you for a single night based on this year's rate, and then automatically adjust your reservation once the 2019 pricing is released. At that point, you can also convert your room-only reservation into a Disney Vacation Package reservation, adding dates, dining packages, and discounted park tickets. You'll also be able to customize your complimentary Magic Bands through your reservation.

Dining

You can reserve dining at all the Disney table-service restaurants up to 180 days in advance, which is a big win when it comes to planning your travels. The most popular restaurants - the Magic Kingdom's Cinderella's Royal Table and Be Our Guest (the only restaurant that serves alcohol in the park), and all character dining experiences in Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom - will book up quickly during high-traffic times, so book as soon as possible. Some restaurants will require that you pay for your meal when you reserve, but if you have to cancel later, they'll give you a refund.

FastPass+

Your FastPass+ is your get-out-of-line free card for each park, so use them wisely. Each member of your group can book up to three Fastpass+ credits for each day, so you'll want to get the most out of them. Do some research into what rides and attractions are can't-misses for your group, prioritizing Fastpass+ for those with the longest lines. Then, try to book them as early as you can (30 days in advance, or 60 days for those staying at a resort hotel). The most popular rides and character meetings book up quickly, so mark your calendar.

Be sure to read the FastPass+ fine print, as some of the parks (such as Epcot) have tiered systems that restrict the use of more than one Fastpass+ in a top tier (you will have to choose between Frozen Ever After and Soarin'), whereas others (like Animal Kingdom) may make you choose between certain high-demand rides (such as Avatar Flight of Passage and Na'vi River Journey).

Also, be aware of the times you're booking for your FastPass+ credits, as well. Once you use all three FastPass+ in one day, you'll be able to book more while you're in the park, which means that if all your reservations are scheduled before early afternoon, you'll have plenty of time to score a couple more. However, mornings (usually before 11 a.m.) are the slowest time at the parks, so arrive early enough (take advantage of Extra Magic Hours if you're staying on the property), and you might be able to get on your favorite rides without waiting in line anyway. Strategy is key.

I Still "Baby Wear" My Toddler, and It's the Best Parenting Hack I've Found

"Isn't she heavy?" I'm asked for the 100th time as I grocery shop with my 32-pound toddler on my back. When you "wear" your toddler, there are questions, judgments, and yes, even looks of envy. There have been plenty of instances where I've had my daughter on my back as we smoothly make our way down the store aisles (sometimes while singing) and a parent with a screaming toddler gives me the look of, "Sh*t, I need one of those." Yes, you do. There are so many reasons I still "wear" my daughter, despite her being long out of the small baby phase. The main one? It's made my life as a new mom so much easier. I've come to think of it as the greatest parenting hack that everyone needs to know. Here's why.

  1. Your shopping dreams will come true. OK, you may not be gifted millions to buy whatever you want (that's what my shopping dreams are made of), but something that's almost as valuable will happen. You'll be able to get through the store without chasing your toddler around and avoid some epic tantrums. Carrying your toddler gives them a great view of what's going on, and as soon as that little hand reaches for a glass jar on the shelf, you can step back and avoid a mess.
  2. You can both explore and have adventures. Have plans for a beautiful hike but unsure if the little one can keep up and not get tired? Bring along your carrier. I always let my daughter explore in nature for as long as she wants. But she'll likely get tired after a while, which is when I'll pick her up and strap her to my back. They may put up a little fight since the fun and exploring independently has ended, but they'll quickly ease into the comfort of your body and the view from above. And if you're very lucky, they'll nap.
  3. Bonding. Wearing your baby is a great way to create or maintain a strong bond. It can also calm them. For me, wearing my toddler has continued our bond after our breastfeeding journey ended at 28 months. She still gets the closeness of being on my chest, and I love the snuggles.
  4. Safety in busy situations. I don't know about you, but I still remember that time I got lost in a grocery store and was given a red balloon as they called for my mom on the intercom. Baby-wearing is a great way to keep kids close and safe if you'll be in a high traffic area.
  5. Traveling. The only reason I've ever brought a stroller while traveling is because my husband suggested it. Our first trip with our girl was when she was 11 weeks old. The stroller ended up being useless weight since she slept on my chest. The next time we brought a small umbrella stroller, I accidentally left it on a train platform. It was just an extra piece to carry around. Having your baby get used to being in a carrier is essential if you love to travel. I've rocked my girl to sleep in the carrier on a number of international flights, train rides, and outings. She's spent hours, literally, on my back as we toured the cobblestone streets of Germany, and when she really disliked the back seat on the bicycle we rode in Amsterdam, I rode with her on my back. She laughed the rest of the way.
  6. Hands-free. If you can't have an extra hand, you should at least be able to use the ones you have. Enough said.
  7. Naps on the go. Ever had to cancel plans because it was going to interrupt naptime? Sleep on the go is possible with a cozy front carry or back carry! Whether you work long hours, don't feel like canceling plans, or have a long day of errands you need to get done, carriers will be your new BFF. Start them young.

Small Bust? Shop 20 Figure-Flattering Suits to Enhance What You've Got

Swimsuit shopping is a unique battle for anyone, especially if you're self-conscious about being smaller up top. Arm yourself with tricks and you'll be able to stroll seaside with confidence.

  • Flaunt what you have, and fake what you don't. If you're looking to create more cleavage, opt for an underwire bra top (or padding). A structured top will shape what you have, while padded cups can actively fake more if that's the look you're after.
  • Distract, distract, distract. Ruffles, bold prints, and splashes of color are all far busier than a simple, solid suit and can claim an onlooker's attention.
  • Embrace what you can wear. Tiny tops and unique shapes are cute but often spell disaster for women with larger chests. Trendy styles are easy to conquer when support isn't mandatory, so go ahead and play around with fun cuts.

Now that you're up to speed, just read on to shop the cutest suits for small-busted beach babes.
