This Beach in South Africa Is COVERED With Penguins, and You Can Take Photos With Them!

Queer Eye's Antoni Doesn't Need to Impress You With His Culinary Skills, He's Just Here to Help
There's a reason the food Antoni Porowski makes on Queer Eye isn't especially intricate. Through the beloved Netflix original series, now in its second season, the 34-year-old, Montreal-born chef simply wants to make viewers less afraid of cooking. So, he'll teach people how to make guacamole or an omelet because he isn't trying to dazzle viewers with his advanced culinary techniques. He's just here to help.
In a phone interview with POPSUGAR to promote his mixology partnership with Vita Coco Sparkling, Antoni shared his thoughts on delivery culture and broccoli lattes, and he dished out some details about his fairly under-wraps restaurant . . . without getting himself in trouble.
Antoni likes to keep things simple. As a self-described "purist" with "more traditional sensibilities," he's not here for the most recent viral what's it called. The latest food trend that elicited an "eye-roll" from him? The broccoli latte. "I can't imagine it to be pretty delicious. I feel like hot broccoli should be roasted, charred, or it should be like a cheddary broccoli soup," Antoni said. "Anything too gimmicky tends to throw me off."
While that's clearly a hard pass on the broccoli latte, Antoni has quite the affinity for popcorn, his favorite snack for a Netflix binge-watching session. "Whenever I eat, I like to eat a lot of it. Moderation is not really in my vocabulary as hard as I try," he said. To satiate his cravings, Antoni will jazz up up some popcorn by adding peanut oil and a lot of black pepper, then microplaning some Parmigiano-Reggiano that "clings" to the popcorn due to the oil. "It's healthier than chips," he said. "It's not deep-fried, and it still kind of feels very junk food-y, which I really like."
To wash it down, Antoni recommends making simple-ingredient cocktails with Vita Coco's new fizzy range, like a take on the classic Moscow Mule made with the lemon ginger can or a refreshing Paloma made with the grapefruit can. "It's really good as long as you drink it really cold. Coconut water has to be very cold in my opinion," Antoni said. Otherwise, "I won't tell you what it tastes like, but it does have a weird taste when it's warm."
Though he technically wasn't supposed to talk about it yet - "I got a little gentle slap on the hand," he said - Antoni recently revealed that he is planning to open his own fast-casual restaurant in New York City. What he could say is that the food will be healthy. "It's food that you can have before or after the gym and still feel good about your life and feel like you're making good decisions - at least on the food front."
He also wants some of the dishes to simply add to what customers are already cooking up. "There's going to be a delivery option for certain protein-based things that are a little more time-consuming to make in terms of stews and roasts and things like that," he said. "So, you can always order something like that but then make your own salad, and at least it shows your guests that you actually made the effort to do something. The term has already been coined, but semi-homemade is the idea."

So, yes, while his restaurant will have delivery, Antoni doesn't want customers to give up on cooking. "Everything is done for us," he said of this generation's growing dependence on food delivery. The chef shared his interesting theory about why young people, especially those living in urban areas, might feel intimidated by cooking. With the recent influx of elevated food shows and documentaries, Antoni said, "Everyone kind of thinks that they know everything, which has helped us be more knowledgeable but also more opinionated. I feel like people are intimidated by cooking because they see food as this elitist thing - which it can be, but it doesn't have to be." He added, "Get to know your produce or fruits or vegetables and learn how to work with it from there."

If People Knew How Separation From Parents Affected Children's Brains, "They Would Never Do This"
The amount of worry moms like me have had about sleep-training and the effects such "cry-it-out" methods could have on our children is immense. We've consulted pediatricians, read 200-page books, preemptively defended our plans on Facebook, and pored over conflicting studies to determine if the momentary trauma endured by our babies when we don't comfort them as they drift to sleep will do any long-term harm.
Meanwhile, children have been forcibly separated from their parents at our nation's southern borders, an ordeal that has truly catastrophic effects with so much scientific evidence against it that how anyone could allow it to happen to a single child is mystifying.
Although an executive order announced on June 20 put a stop to the inhumane act, it's already happened to approximately 2,342 immigrant children under President Donald Trump's zero-tolerance policy for illegal border crossings. For those kids, there's no plans yet to return them to their parents – the damage is still being done.
According to Charles Nelson, a pediatrics professor at Harvard Medical School who was interviewed recently by the Washington Post, "If people paid attention at all to the science, they would never do this."

To better understand just what the science says, it's worth looking at perhaps the most famous study of early childhood neglect, in which researchers, including Nelson, tracked children in massive Romanian orphanages. The longitudinal study, which began in 2000, determined that these kids actually had less white matter in their brains than comparable children in nearby families. This depleted white matter was evident in brain regions that targeted attention, general cognition, and emotional processing. Other discoveries? These children's brain activity was also much lower, they scored lower on IQ tests later in life, and over time their "fight-or-flight" response system, in which a stressful situation might result in increased heart rate, seemed to be broken – dangerous scenarios didn't seem to affect these kids at all or safe scenarios would elicit uncharacteristic levels of fear and anxiety.
Similarly, in Australia, a study showed that Aboriginal children who were removed from their families were nearly twice as likely to be arrested or charged with a crime as an adult. They were also more likely to have alcohol addiction or gambling problems.
Another study – on how childhood adversity can affect those individuals later in life – showed that a trauma like forced separation could permanently hinder an individual's mental well-being. Such children are at an elevated risk for as many as 30 different mental health disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, and ADHD.
Countless studies over the past several decades – even aside from those focusing on neglect – have proven that babies emotionally attach to their parents starting at birth, and that this bond produces mood-boosting hormones like oxytocin, reduces stress hormones like cortisol, and greatly affects the child's brain itself.
Children who experienced parental deprivation, however, showed hyperactivity in the amygdala – the part of the brain associated with attachment and fear. One study shows that parents, specifically, help children's amygdalas stabilize. Even at the neurobiological level, children rely deeply on their parents to regulate their brain.
Without that regulation, Dylan Gee, a Yale psychology professor who researches the impact of early-life trauma on the developing brain, noted that the neural circuits in children's brains are disrupted, often irreparably.
"Forcibly separating children from their parents at the border strips children of their strongest buffer against stress when they need it most," Gee said.
This swiftly damages their ability to manage emotions, trust people, focus on age-appropriate activities, and long-term? It puts them at risk for academic and occupational failure, makes them more susceptible to physical health problems such as heart disease or diabetes.
As Alicia Lieberman, who runs the Early Trauma Treatment Network at San Francisco's University of California, recently said: "Children are biologically programmed to grow best in the care of a parent figure. When that bond is broken through long and unexpected separations with no set timeline for reunion, children respond at the deepest physiological and emotional levels."
Although these studies are certainly generalized and don't directly relate to this precise population of children, the medical community – from the American Academy of Pediatrics to the American College of Physicians – is in full agreement that the results apply. The scientific conclusion is crystal clear. And if all the political discourse was taken off the table, there'd be zero room for debate: no person should ever condone any treatment that categorically leads to such horrific, irreversible results in a defenseless child. Yet it still happened. And we'll be paying the price of it over 2,342 lifetimes.

I Had No Idea This Light Therapy Lamp Would Help My Postpartum Anxiety
When my therapist suggested I try a light lamp to handle my raging postpartum anxiety, I paused. It sounded a little bogus. A lamp? I'm around lamps all day long, from standing to overhead and everything in between. How was that going to calm my mind so that I could breathe?
It was eight days after I'd delivered my first baby. Exactly five days since we'd come home from the hospital. My daughter was healthy and hungry, and I was an absolute mess. My anxiety had soared to new, unfamiliar levels. Prior to delivering, I'd been working closely with my therapist on maintaining a good headspace, and to my surprise, I got through my entire pregnancy with manageable levels of anxiety and panic. It was there, ebbing and flowing right along aside me, but it was reasonable.
Nothing could have prepared me for the round-the-clock fear that I experienced once entering my home following delivery, though. There was a mixed bag of things at play. A series of new and very serious responsibilities, from trying - and failing - to breastfeed, to having to make constant decisions about the health and wellness of my baby, all cascading into one another.
It was the middle of Winter, and these paralyzing sensations, for whatever reason, were peaking around 4:30 p.m. every day just when the sun was setting-when the house was quiet, and I felt most trapped inside of it.
My therapist noticed the way light exposure was impacting my mood - I was having trouble eating anything at night because the anxiety was so debilitating it was giving me intense gastrointestinal issues - and among the many things we worked on together, she suggested I try a Verilux HappyLight ($99). She explained that light therapy at the right time of day could possibly improve my mood and energy, and reset my circadian rhythm to improve sleep. It could, at the very least, help.
Desperate, I ordered it immediately. Every day at 3:30 p.m. - about an hour before I'd typically trigger - I sat in front of the lamp. We started off slowly with just 20-minute sessions. I placed it on my bedside table (though you can put it anywhere) and sat next to it so that the light hit my eyes from the side. As much as I wanted to do other things while using it, it works best when you look forward. It wasn't exactly relaxing, but it was therapeutic. Like an extension of my healing.
The first day I completed a session I was noticeably energized immediately. More awake. I turned off the lamp and went on a walk, which was great to get outside and get some fresh air. I even walked to the market and ate dinner. Something about eating outside helped. And when I returned home from the walk I felt a little different, too. Rather than the suffocating feeling I was experiencing at home, I was a little less anxious. I looked forward to the next day, when I could use the light again. Whether it was the lamp or my belief in the lamp, I didn't care. That's the way anxiety works sometimes.
While the HappyLight doesn't make any medical claims, and I wouldn't have tried it without the guidance from my therapist, it was a useful tool in addressing and treating my postpartum anxiety. It gave me a regular thing to look forward to every day, and it reset how I felt about the evening. It didn't completely cure my postpartum anxiety, but it was a critical piece. It's Time We All Stop Giving PTA Moms a Bad Rap
Dear PTA Moms,
First, I want to tell you I'm sorry. After just one PTA meeting, I became a dropout. As I sat in a room full of you well-polished women, I thought, "This scene just isn't for me." There was just too. much. smiling. As I sat there listening to your endless energy and ideas, I envisioned you all going home after the meeting to prep organic meals for your families that your children actually ate. I pictured you calm and pleasant - never yelling, or God forbid, swearing - happy, and totally in control. All of these visions are the opposite of me and my life, so about 10 minutes into that first meeting, I knew I was out.
You are so much more than those age-old stereotypes. You are mothers who go out of their way to make our kids' school memories more enjoyable.
But I also got something very wrong. Before I even set foot in that meeting, I let the PTA mom stereotypes get to me. You know those memes floating around the internet about crazy PTA moms that are bitchy and horrible? No? Good, don't look at them. But they snuck into my brain and stayed there. I talked myself into believing that I'd never fit in with this A-type crowd. I swear too much, look disheveled half the time, and forget to make sure my kids brush their teeth most days. What could I have in common with you?
As the year progressed, I sent my kindergarten-age son to some of the PTA events: after-school lock-ins, book club, and even a mother-son picnic. I volunteered from time to time, but I never actually appreciated the work that the PTA did. I overlooked all of the meticulous details you planned so carefully for our children - for my child. But finally, on one of the last days of school, my son had his field day. I drove up to volunteer, and upon getting out of my car, I stood shocked. The elementary school lawn looked like a carnival. There were bounce houses and about 20 games set up for the young children. The kids' squeals and giggles floated through the air. And the best part of the field day? It just so happened to also be my son's sixth birthday.
Yes, PTA moms, the ones I judged far too quickly, you made my son's birthday one that he'll remember for the rest of his life. He bounced between games, inhaled a couple of popsicles, and laughed the entire morning. During the field day, I chatted with many of you and realized that you're all more like me than I thought (and you didn't even outwardly judge me when I swore). I could be myself around you hard-working mothers, and we even talked about things other than our children and the PTA. I threw my gratitude toward you and told you how special you made my son's day, but giving thanks to you is something I should have done months ago.
PTA moms, you are so much more than those age-old stereotypes. You are mothers who go out of their way to make our kids' school memories more enjoyable. You put in extra hours for our kids' happiness. You work tirelessly to make ideas and visions come to life. And no, you don't have it all together all the time, which is something I deeply appreciate. Thank you for being you, and most importantly, for all of the hard work you put into making our children's school year fun.

These Doctors Explain If the Keto Diet Can Help Lower High Blood Pressure
It's no surprise why the keto diet has grown in popularity over the last few years; it's helped people lose weight, can fight inflammation, and may even be good for those with diabetes. But with the diet's focus on eating high-fat, moderate-protein, and low-carb meals, some people are concerned with how it will affect their blood pressure. After all, foods such as bacon, pastrami, and other deli meats that are allowed on the diet aren't recommended for people with high blood pressure.
Turns out the keto diet can actually be beneficial for those with high blood pressure. However, it's not because of the diet itself; weight loss, which results from the keto diet, will improve blood pressure.
"Being overweight or obese is one of the major triggers for an increase in blood pressure," cardiologist and weight-management specialist Luiza Petre, MD, told POPSUGAR. One study from 2011 found that up to 80 percent of hypertension cases in Poland are related to being overweight or obese. Dr. Petre added that overweight and obese people who lose weight have a 50 percent chance of reversing their blood pressure without medication.
And a keto diet can be an effective way to lose weight; a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that people who followed a low-carb ketogenic diet lost more weight compared to those who followed a low-fat diet.
"The bottom line is the ketogenic diet will improve blood pressure, but not as a direct effect. It's through its indirect weight-loss benefits," she said. "If the keto diet is done without a weight-loss goal, it might not impact blood pressure at all. Losing weight remains the number one intervention, followed by lowering salt and exercising to improve blood pressure." Dr. Petre added that the keto diet will lower blood pressure thanks to the weight loss, not because of the ketones in the blood as a result of being in ketosis.
However, the keto diet may not be the best one for weight loss for those with high blood pressure. Nieca Goldberg, MD, medical director of the Joan H. Tisch Center For Women's Health at NYU Langone Medical Center, recommends the DASH diet instead. The DASH diet stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, which is a Mediterranean-style diet that's rich in vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and lean meat and low in salt. She also said to avoid processed foods for blood pressure, since they can be high in salt, and instead to eat antioxidant-rich produce.
If you are thinking about trying the keto diet, be sure to consult with a doctor or dietitian before making any drastic dietary changes.

Common medical conditions that cause deeper pain include cystitis, endometriosis, fibroids, interstitial cystitis and ovarian cysts. It has also bee found that pelvic inflammatory disease and irritable bowel syndrome can cause these symptoms
Additionally, uterine prolapse is also found in some women who complain about pain during sexual intercourse.
Mental health is known to play a crucial role in the sexual well-being of women, with depression, relationship issues, anxiety, and high-stress levels greatly contributing to poor performance in the bedroom.
Physical health can, however, also be to blame in many cases, but is often overlooked by doctors as a possible factor in certain conditions women tend to complain about, including sexual pain disorder.
Looking at both the physiological and psychological well-being of women experiencing pain during sex is vital for uncovering the underlying factors that are causing these symptoms, instead of simply advising the women to "relax" and work on her relationship.

This Is How Much Protein You Need Daily to Reach Ketosis, According to an Expert
If you're currently on the keto diet or getting ready to start, you'll want to make sure you're following it correctly. Making mistakes like eating the wrong fats and too much protein can jeopardize your results. According to Catherine Metzgar, PhD, RD, a nutrition scientist and clinician at Virta Health, the ideal macronutrient profile on the keto diet should be close to 70 to 80 percent fat, 15 to 20 percent protein, and five to 10 percent carbohydrates. Eating more macros than recommended can prevent you from reaching nutritional ketosis, the state when your metabolism begins to run on fat instead of carbohydrates.
Dr. Metzgar told POPSUGAR that in her experience, one of the reasons people fail to reach ketosis is because their protein intake is too high. This is because protein has a moderate insulin-stimulating effect that can interfere with ketone production when too much is consumed. According to doctors at Virta Health, studies have found that "most healthy humans maintain lean body mass and function during a ketogenic diet providing between 1.5 and 1.75 grams of protein per kilogram of 'reference body weight'." To find out how much protein you need to consume daily, utilize the following chart created by Virta Health. Note that 1.2 g/kg is the low end of recommended daily protein intake, 1.5 g/kg is midrange, and 2.0 g/kg is the upper end. The doctors at Virta Health advise never going below 1.2 g/kg of protein daily.
Habitually snacking on foods full of protein can cause you to go over your daily protein limit on the keto diet. To prevent this from happening, the Virta Health team recommends eating five servings of nonstarchy vegetables a day, like asparagus, broccoli, or peppers. I'm a Fitness Editor, and This Is the One Thing I Travel With to Get in a Good Workout
When I'm on vacation, I look forward to sleeping in, catching up on my reading, and hitting up cocktail hour (usually by a beach or a pool). But I also like to keep up a workout schedule so I can feel healthy and energized during my trip. Plus, it helps keep some semblance of structure to my days so I'm not completely off my normal routine.
Usually, that means hitting up the hotel or resort gym or going for a run. But sometimes, there isn't a gym or a safe running path available. To make sure I get in a good strength training workout, I pack a couple of resistance bands. Unlike dumbbells, they don't weigh down my luggage, and they are super flexible and easy to pack. And you don't need much room to use them; if you can find a place to stand up and extend your arms out, you can use a resistance band.
I like to do bicep curls, overhead presses, triceps presses, and squats, but you can also work your abs, too. I prefer the thicker bands with the handles, but you can also get in a good workout with the flatter, thinner ones without handles and smaller booty bands. I Want to Pay For Half of My Engagement Ring - Why Is That a Big Deal?
A few months ago, after being in a relationship for years and talking about getting married, my boyfriend suggested we stop by my favorite jewelry store to take a look at engagement rings. It goes without saying that I was excited; not only was this was a big step in our relationship, I already knew what kind of ring I wanted (it's only natural when you work in fashion). But when I finally saw what that marquise-shaped diamond looked like on my finger, I realized it wasn't what I'd pictured at all. Instead, we ended up falling in love an emerald cut surrounded by smaller stones and set in classic gold. It was regal, different, and eye-catching - and it was also $17,000.
I always knew engagement rings weren't cheap, but that particular price seemed outrageous to me. Even if my boyfriend had that kind of money (and I'm pretty confident he does not), I wouldn't let him spend it on a tiny piece of jewelry - something that's so trivial in the grand scheme of things, aka spending our lives together. And that's when it hit me: why was he the only one spending money here? Wouldn't it be better if we just split the cost? Maybe then we could afford something really nice (although maybe not $17,000-nice).

For the entirely of our relationship, this is how it's always been. If he buys lunch, I'll pay for dinner. If he's spending $250 on me for Christmas, I'll spend $250 on him. If he's taking care of half of the rent, I've got the other half. Sure, sometimes it depends on pay schedules or unforeseen expenses, such as flat tires or bachelorette getaways, but for the most part, we aim to keep things even. And in 2018 - a year where women continue to fight for equality - I'm not sure why buying an engagement ring should be any different.
Unfortunately, my boyfriend isn't totally sold on this idea. He wants to buy the ring on his own, and right now, a good argument is that he's making more money than I am. But as we continue to talk about getting engaged, I'll continue to offer. Maybe it's not half - maybe, instead, I'll put a specific amount aside for him to use, this way he can still "surprise" me (yes, I've thought about this at length).
