If Any of These Signs Relate to You, You Need to Change Your Birth Control Method

One of the many burdens that come with being a woman is birth control. As great as it is for preventing unwanted pregnancies, it's up to us to pick up our monthly prescriptions, to wear a patch, to get a shot, or to get a vaginal ring or IUD inserted inside of us. Not to mention the pains that come with each birth control method. But what many of us aren't aware of is that side effects, like bad cramps and moodiness, aren't in fact part of the deal. What you're experiencing may be a sign that your birth control isn't the right match for your body.

"If you feel depressed, out of whack, tired, moody, or just not right, then your birth control isn't working," Dr. Prudence Hall, gynecologist and founder of the Hall Center, told POPSUGAR.

See if any of the following signs from One Medical provider Jessica Lue-Lai, MD, relate to you:

  1. You're bleeding or cramping heavily: Yes, excessive bleeding and cramping isn't something you have to live with! According to Dr. Lue-Lai, "you might need to have your birth control changed for lighter periods or more regular bleeding with less cramping" if you consistently experience these symptoms.
  2. Your mood is all over the place: Mood swings or feelings of anxiety or depression are worth speaking to your provider about.
  3. Your sex drive has changed: Birth control can sometimes cause your sex drive to plummet. Consider switching medications if this is a persistent issue for you.
  4. Your appetite has changed: "This is a very common side-effect; birth control is known to sometimes increase or decrease your appetite," Dr. Lue-Lai said.
  5. You're nauseous, dizzy, or even vomiting: These are considered extreme side effects and should definitely be addressed with your doctor.
  6. You're dealing with breast tenderness: Breast tenderness isn't completely uncommon with certain birth control, but severe pain can be a cause for concern.
  7. You're seeing acne where it wasn't before: Women who already prone to breakouts may experience severe acne with hormonal IUDs or contraception pills. If you're having excessive acne that's worsening, it might be time to change birth control.
  8. Your birth control may not be effective: To find out how effective your birth control is, Dr. Lue-Lai recommends checking out Bedsider.org, which is a great resource that allows you to weigh your options.

When starting a new birth control method, you should give yourself a two to three-month adjustment period before considering a switch. "Certain mild symptoms like acne, mood swings, or irregular spotting are not uncommon at the start," Dr. Lue-Lai said. "However, with birth control that contains only progesterone – Nexplanon, a Depo shot, or IUDs like Mirena, Skyla, or Liletta, for example – users may have irregular bleeding for several months before the symptoms improve."

Forgetting to take your birth control regularly can also affect your body's response. But if you're consistent and you're still experiencing ongoing symptoms or changes, you should definitely consult your provider.

I Quit Cardio For 30 Days, and the Results Were Unexpected - and So Good

I have a confession to make: I'm a cardio addict. As weird as it sounds, giving up alcohol for 30 days is easier for me than eliminating cardiovascular exercise for one month. Hear me out . . .

For as long as I can remember, my exercise regimen has always involved cardio. Always. From dancing as a toddler, to soccer in elementary and middle school, to running varsity cross country and playing varsity tennis in high school, to utilizing every elliptical and treadmill in my college gym, I've always been an active individual. For my mental sanity (read: clearing my head), if I was working out, there was one requirement: my heart rate would be elevated and beating at a rapid pace.

Fast forward to my postcollege life: these days, I participate in Tough Mudders, I run 5Ks, and I fangirl over my favorite cardio-based group fitness classes in New York City. I attend sweat sessions (almost) every day, like it's my job. (Well, as a fitness writer, it kind of is.)

After completing 30 straight days of treadmill-based workouts at Barry's Bootcamp earlier this year and maintaining the same weight from start to finish (and eating and drinking whatever I wanted - because, hello, hunger), my brain was tired, my body was a little fatigued, and my muscles (ahem, calves) were supertight. Because I'm equally starving and exhausted hours after running, cycling, swimming, and dancing, I wondered what life would be like if I gave up cardio. And so, for 30 days, I did.

Here's what I lost, learned, gained and changed - physically and mentally - in just one month.

The Workouts

Instead of jogging or spinning every morning, I opted for an exercise based on strength training, using weights or bodyweight exercises. SLT, aka Strengthen Lengthen Tone, is a 50-minute total-body workout using a Megaformer machine (a reformer-like contraption). In summary: SLT is Pilates but a million times more intense. With locations in six states and one conveniently less than a block from my apartment, I participated in class ever other day. Muscles that I didn't know existed were sore, mostly in my core. If I could have, I would have taken class every day for a month, but truthfully, my body needed to rest between workouts. Even though I was completing slow movements in counts of four, I was still breaking a sweat. After 15 classes, my limbs and abs felt stronger. On days I worked out, I felt great. On days I attempted to relax, I was slightly more restless.

The Recovery

Exercising frequently leaves my muscles a mess, and despite my love for fitness, yoga is not my strong suit. In order to make it through the month without doing downward dog 100 times a day, I visited a new space in NYC called STRETCH*D three to four times each week. For a half hour, my body was gently moved to loosen muscles, fix problem areas, and prevent injury using dynamic stretching methods. Checking in a few times each week made a huge difference. For one, I was far less sore than usual. And secondly, I left relaxed and mellow (and ready for nap time), which made for a considerable contrast to my usual fast-paced, anxiety-driven attitude on weekdays.

The Diet

I worked with Tovita Nutrition, a one-on-one virtual nutrition service, to figure out what foods were best for my body with my no-cardio agenda. Although, I have a profound love for ice cream and a strong liking for granola and protein bars, I (mostly) gave up both for 30 days. Through weekly FaceTime sessions and daily food logging, I became more aware of what I was eating, how much, and at what times during the day. To be perfectly honest, I didn't cut out any major food groups (ie: carbs). In fact, I ate more carbs (in nonprotein bar form, of course). And I felt better, actually. I wasn't trying to lose weight; I just wanted to feel energetic - and I did. Cutting out the added sugar made my mood more consistent throughout the days and weeks.

The Results

At the beginning of the month, I measured myself with a special InBody scale to track my change in weight, body fat, muscle, and more. In the end, I gained three pounds - but it was all muscle. My body fat percentage dropped from 19.5 percent to 18.8 percent. Translation: dropping cardio from my regimen helped me cut fat, without working out every day. In the end, I missed cardio a ton, so there's no doubt I'll pick it back up. However, next time I'm looking to lose body fat, I'll take a short break from my favorite cardio workouts, rather than a full month.

3 Resistance Band Arm Moves From the Trainer That Gets Victoria's Secret Angels Fit

P.Volve, the low-impact workout class created by trainer Stephen Pasterino (or "P" as his clients call him) that helped train the Victoria Secret's Angels for the 2017 fashion show, aims to get you a strong core and long, lean body through low-impact movements. "Smaller movements open up motion in your hips to firm the butt and slim the thigh," says P. "High-intensity is all about getting those results super fast by having you push your joints and muscles in a short amount of time - it doesn't really amount to anything."

The workout class, which I tried for the first time earlier this year, is working on a new way to tone your arms using those same small movements that got the Angels their firm and toned legs and a cool new tool P is calling, well, the P.Band ($30) - a resistance band and glove hybrid aimed at contouring the upper arm area.

The band has two fingerless gloves at both ends so it's secured around your fingers and wrists and you're free to concentrate on the program's curated moves - now integrated into the studio's signature classes - which sculpt the arm rather than add muscle to it. "If you want to gain muscle, that's where weights come in," P says. "If you're simply looking to carve the arm and tone it, you only need resistance."

As someone who has close to no upper body strength, the band is extremely appealing when compared to intimidating free weights. In barre or circuit classes, I feel myself burning out pretty quickly when using weights to work out my arms, and usually give up way before completing an entire rep. That wasn't the case with P.Band.

The band is easy to use and the moves that P guides you through are pretty simple, but not at all easy. Most of them involve keeping one or both arms completely straight and pulling your hands apart until you feel tension. Repeat the steps eight times on each side and you're pretty much good to go (and pretty exhausted). Ten minutes into the arm section and I was already working up a sweat.

No wonder the band has already gotten the stamp of approval from his clients like Blanca Padilla and Romee Strjid. "Arms are generally easy to tone if you stick to it in your regular workout," P told me. "You can start seeing a slimmer and more contoured arm in a matter of days."

If you can't make a class at P.Volve's New York City studio, no worries: P shared three of his favorite moves with us.

Nordstrom Sells Its Own Affordable Workout Leggings, and I Practically "Live In" Them

As a fitness editor, I'm always on the hunt for my next favorite pair of workout leggings. And currently, it's Zella's Live-In leggings from Nordstrom. If you're unfamiliar with the brand, Zella is one of Nordstrom's native brands including Caslon, BP., Halogen, and Treasure & Bond, and one of the best-selling brands in the Active department. During my days as a Nordstrom employee, I remember hearing customers raving about these signature leggings, but it wasn't until recently that I purchased a pair of my own. As soon as I put them on, I immediately regretted waiting so long to buy them.

To start, the original Live-In legging is incredibly comfortable and flattering. According to its product description, it "supports muscles, smooths curves, and optimizes range of motion," and I couldn't agree more. Its moisture-wicking fabric keeps me cool even during my most intense workouts, and is comfortable enough to lounge in, run errands in, and yes, live in (I'm even wearing them right now). I also love the hidden pocket in the waistband that's actually large enough to stash a credit card and keys.

My two personal favorites are the Live-In Midi (the perfect length for my 5'2" height) and the Live-In Lite (amazingly soft and stretchy).

On top of it being quality material and dryer-friendly, its affordable price is the true selling point. All Zella leggings range from $49 to $59 - quite the deal when you compare the price and quality with other athleisure brands. Most of its products also come in a wide range of sizes from XXS (00) to XXL (20).

Seriously, what's not to love? Take a look at Zella's many Live-In styles ahead!

I Stopped Taking Probiotics For 2 Weeks, and This is What Happened

To combat belly bloat, I have a few things in my arsenal, including drinking tons of water (close to a gallon a day), limiting my sugar and refined carb intake, getting my fill of fiber every day, and daily intermittent fasting. I also take probiotics every day, as recommended by my doctor who I saw when I was having extreme tummy issues about two years ago.

I pop one probiotic every day and have gotten into the habit of taking it with my lunch. I'm a fan of Ultimate Flora, either the 50 or 30 billion. I love that I can travel with them because they don't need to be refrigerated.

Why I Stopped For 2 Weeks

Combining all these things has helped me finally feel like I have control over preventing my belly bloat. It's an amazing feeling. Until one day, when I didn't feel so amazing. That's when I realized I hadn't taken a probiotic in two weeks. Why? It wasn't a glamorous reason - I ran out. I was getting ready for a trip and when I went to pack my probiotics, I realized I was down to my last pill, and I had forgotten to pick up a bottle.

What Happened?

When I got back from traveling for a few days, I actually felt fine, so I put off getting more. Maybe it was a waste of money, and I could save the $28 a month (that's $336 a year!) for something else (more fitness gear, please!). Maybe the other debloating techniques I was doing daily were enough.

After about seven days, my stomach started to feel off. I had been eating less healthy than usual with the warmer weather - lots of vegan ice cream, dinners out, s'mores by the campfire - so I just thought I felt crappy because of that. After a few days of cleaning up my diet, I actually didn't feel any better; I felt worse.

It had now been almost two weeks without taking probiotics, and every day I felt a little more bloated and gassy. By the end of two weeks, I was uncomfortably bloated and had a hard time sleeping because of gas pains. I was shocked. The only thing I had really changed was not taking probiotics, so could that be the reason? I hopped in my car and picked up a bottle to find out.

Now What?

After just five days of taking my beloved probiotics, I started to feel more like myself again. My belly was less puffy, it felt less gurgly, and my digestive system was - ahem - becoming more regular. I couldn't believe one tiny little pill had this much impact on how my belly felt.

For me, taking probiotics regularly definitely makes a huge difference. I aim to take them daily, but found that I'm OK if I skip three or four days - if I go any longer, my belly begins to suffer. Because I know now probiotics definitely do what they say they do, I always keep a new bottle on hand to avoid another unplanned probiotic break.

Burn Fat and Tone Your Body (Mostly Your Butt) With This CrossFit Workout

When I walked into my CrossFit box and saw this workout posted, I thought to myself, "This doesn't look so bad. Just running and some dumbbell moves." Famous last words. I should have remembered that the workouts that look the easiest on paper are usually the ones that destroy me. And I was right. I was floored by how only four exercises could work me so hard, leave me huffing and puffing, and my muscles burning. My ass was completely kicked in just 20 minutes!

My coach Jade Jenny, owner of Champlain Valley CrossFit gave us a little advice before tackling this workout. He said to either focus on using medium-weight dumbbells so you can really push your pace and do your reps unbroken, or use heavier dumbbells if you want to increase your strength. I used 15-pound dumbbells, and fell to the ground by the end that felt plenty hard enough for me.

The Workout

Directions: After warming up with five minutes of dynamic moves, complete the workout ahead, then take a one-minute rest. Repeat this five times.

21 dumbbell push press
100-meter run
15 dumbbell squats
100-meter run
9 dumbbell thrusters
100-meter run

For reference, it took me about 30 seconds to run the 100 meters, running at a moderate pace. You could certainly sprint to make this workout even harder.

Keep reading to learn details on how to do each of the dumbbell moves.

I Planned My Wedding in Just 2 Months, and It Was the Best Decision

My 24th birthday will be one that I remember forever. It was the day my then-boyfriend popped the question. His proposal was perfect: he had taken me out to dinner at an elegant restaurant before bringing me back to the waterfront hotel and bar where we had met three years earlier. He ushered me into their largest suite where the candles had already been lit and a birthday cake sat waiting on the table surrounded by a pile of presents. Well, you guessed it. Inside one of those presents was my ring. I was in awe as he proceeded to get down on one knee and asked me to marry him.

Like any bride-to-be, I wanted to start planning immediately. We decided on a Fall wedding - early November when New England is at its most glorious - which gave us a solid 15 months to plan and save.

Exactly one month later, my dad was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer, and his prognosis was grim. Once the dust settled, we decided on a new date. The only thing was that it gave us just two months to pull everything together.

With only two months to plan, we didn't have the luxury of stressing over details or feeling cheated out of the things we had to sacrifice in order to make our wedding happen. Having to make sacrifices on your wedding day for the sake of time and budget sounds awful at first. After all, you only get to do this once, right? (At least that's what most starry-eyed brides hope for, anyway.) But in the end, we were forced to sit down and think about what really mattered. For us, it was having the people we loved there to share in our day. Then everything else just fell into place.

We were forced to sit down and think about what really mattered. For us, it was having the people we loved there to share in our day.

Both our church and venue, which normally hosts up to three weddings at a time, were completely open on the day we chose. Since it was only two months away, and the odds of anyone else coming along to book the venue were slim, they gave us their grand ballroom, something typically reserved for events with a minimum of 300 people (a far cry from our 100). And with Christmas less than three weeks away, the entire venue was already beautifully decorated. Once ordered, my gown came in earlier than expected and needed minimal alterations, and the photographer, DJ, and limo service were happy to have some business in their quiet season. In fact, everything went so smoothly that I still wonder why people actually feel the need to spend a year (or more) of their lives planning a party.

So what, exactly, did we sacrifice? Not much. Since it was so close to Christmas, we chose not to burden our friends with the responsibilities and costs associated with being in a bridal party. Instead, we had a maid of honor and a best man. And rather than invite every single person we've ever met, we kept it intimate with just our closest friends and family members. I didn't get the $1,500 bouquet I had originally envisioned, but that's OK because the simple roses that I carried dried nicely and now serve as a decoration on our mantle. Other than that, I can't think of a single thing that we missed having.

Ten years and three children later, there's a lot about my wedding day that I don't even remember. But I'll tell you what I do remember. I remember the look on my dad's face when he walked me down the aisle, and how we were both crying and laughing as we danced to the song he had chosen. I remember my new husband breaking it down on the dance floor to Michael Jackson (I had no idea he actually knew how to dance) and not being able to contain my laughter. I remember one hell of an after party at the hotel bar, complete with a live band, that continued on well into the night in the hallway of rooms that our family and friends occupied. So you see, the invitations, favors, flowers, and centerpieces are easily forgotten. In a couple of years, you won't remember the details of the party you worked so hard to plan. But you will remember the moments - especially if they're the last - you had with the people you love.

This Wedding's Cityscape Backdrop Was Almost as Gorgeous as the Bride's Twinkly Dress

When POPSUGAR editor Brinton Parker began planning her big day, we all knew it would be a celebration to remember. Her love of movie fandoms, sweet treats, and trendsetting beauty came together flawlessly when she tied the knot with her longtime partner, Christopher Botkin. The breathtaking ceremony took place on Treasure Island, San Francisco, with the cityscape as the background. Friends and family gathered to watch the pair say their vows - which included sweet Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings references, of course.

"I cried so. freakin'. much. on the wedding day, but I'd say that the most emotional moment for me was when Christopher began reading the vows that he wrote," Brinton said. "He's typically not an outspoken romantic, but every word of his vows was so heartfelt and personal that it made me choke up."

The reception followed at The Winery SF, where guests were treated to a visit from the Johnny Doughnuts truck and were surrounded by lush floral decor.

"My florist, Flower Girl Em, absolutely blew us out of the water," Brinton said. "We opted for scattered bud vases instead of centerpieces as a cost-saving move, but Emily went above and beyond everything I could have ever expected. She incorporated fruits like fresh oranges into the head table arrangement, every single piece - from boutonnieres to bouquets - was flawless. Her creativity astounds me and she's one of my favorite people to follow on Instagram!"

"Then, I'd say that our doughnut truck was a verrry close second favorite detail; who doesn't love carbs on wheels arriving halfway through a party? I've never gotten so many compliments about a dessert . . . several of the vegan guests said that their vegan options were the best doughnuts they've ever eaten."

The happy evening came to a close when guests hit the dance floor and took some snaps in the gold sparkly photo booth. You could feel the love everyone had for the newlyweds as they enjoyed one of those most important days of their lives.

"From the get-go, Christopher always told me that he didn't care how our wedding looked, as long as we got to celebrate with our loved ones and we walked away as husband and wife. If I had to guess his favorite moment, I would say it was tearing up the dance floor and partying with all of our friends and family - he danced so hard, he split his pants!"

And that's what we call a successful wedding.

I Wish Someone Had Told Me These 6 Tips Before I Did My First Boudoir Photo Shoot

I used to think boudoir photo shoots were cheesy and a bit tacky. Even though I had seen some gorgeous boudoir pictures in the past, some of which were of friends of mine, I still felt strange about getting photos done myself. After my best friend gave me a nudge (a very stern one), I decided to dive in headfirst and give the boudoir thing a try. After all, I'm not going to be young forever, and I figured my old grandma self in the future would appreciate my curves.

I signed up to work with Tonhya Wysong, a professional photographer who created a women's empowerment project called La Femme Forte. I'm thrilled I did, because it was one of the best decisions of my life. I loved every second of the shoot and couldn't believe how stunning the pictures looked when they were released! I would go back and do it all again. However, there are a few things I would've told myself just to be better prepared for the whole thing. If you're thinking about getting a boudoir shoot done – which you totally should - follow these six tips.

The Sexiest Books of All Time Will Have You Blushing With Every Turn of the Page

Sexiness in books is preconceived to be limited to romance novels, but it's more than that. It's a universal concept that takes on many connotations about having power and agency and challenging old norms about sex. Whether it's Lolita and Anna Karenina for class or picking up Zane's book for pleasure (pun intended), these stories center on a woman's narrative or celebrate sexuality in a liberating way that's not exclusive to romance. Books that were considered too scandalous and taboo for society are now being praised for their revolutionary schools of thought, particularly now because we are at a juncture in society where we're having open discourses about sex and pushing marginalized voices to the forefront. The impressive books on this list have been doing that way before it registered in our collective consciousness.

5 Common Worries You May Have About Moving in With Your SO, and How to Tackle Them

When my boyfriend and I decided to move in together, it definitely felt sudden. We each lived with our parents in towns not far away, and we felt pretty comfortable in our routine, which we had carried on with for almost four years. (Mostly, this meant just being with each other all the time on the weekend.) But alas, he turned 27 and I 26, and that "shouldn't we be adulting?" feeling kicked in.

We had promised each other we'd spend time researching locations and scouting out buildings, but we fell in love with a one-bedroom unit that plenty more couples were interested in. When we were given the opportunity to sign the lease, we went for it - we didn't want to lose this place.

Almost instantly, my anxiety (which I've suffered from my entire life) kicked in. I had a couple of panic attacks during my long-ass commute to work - which was about to take half the time when I moved, so shouldn't I be happy?! - where I had total out-of-body experiences. I thought I was losing feeling on the right side of my body, broke out into a sweat, and then I'd just have phases where I felt like I was looking down on myself sending an email or a text. Minutes later, I'd have to go back and check if it actually really happened. That's anxiety, folks. It can actually make you feel physical symptoms that you might mistake for, I don't know, say, the flu.

Leading up to the big day, I knew I had to start packing, but I put it off. I didn't get any sleep the night after we filled up the U-Haul, even though all the boxes and bags fit perfectly, like pieces of a puzzle. Seriously, it was as if our furniture was telling us to GTFO of our parents' houses.

Anyway, what was I so damn nervous about? My boyfriend is my best friend on the planet. He knows everything about me; there's literally nothing I haven't done in front of him, no worry I haven't vocalized - in other words, he's totally aware that I'm a lot to handle.

Even still, I know I am not the only one who's been nervous about a major life change. Whether you're moving into your own studio apartment, you're crossing state borders, or you're doing just what I did and shacking up with your SO, I'm going to explain to you what my worries were and how each one of them faded away in - I kid you not - five days. Hopefully it gives you a little peace of mind.

The Tasteful Girl's Guide to Taking Nudes

So: you've decided to answer a suitor's request to "send nudes" with your real, live, naked body (not photos that feature lust-worthy piles of zucchini noodles, which is my favorite shutdown). If you're new to the sexting game, you may feel nervous. As a very thirsty lady, I've sent my fair share of tastefully naked pictures. I'm here to demystify the process. Read on to learn the seven steps that work every time I feel like baring it all.

For the Love of God, Clean Your Mirror

This one goes out to the man who thought the image of his schlong against a dirty bathroom mirror would leave me quivering with pleasure. While I get that the point of a nude is not to show off your apartment, it is important to take stock of the tableau that surrounds your naked greatness. So: bust out the Windex, get those smudges and who-knows-what-stains off your mirror, make your bed, and keep any framed photos from Grandma's 100th birthday far, far away from the shot.

Keep any framed photos from Grandma's 100th birthday far, far away from the shot.

Clean Your Camera Lens, Too

You're not done wiping yet! This nugget of wisdom comes courtesy of Ashley Graham, whom I once had five minutes to interview. About three of those minutes were spent with Graham rubbing down my iPhone camera lens after I asked her to teach me how to take a sexy selfie. "Girl, clean your phone screen," she told me (wise words I will remember long after forgetting who the f*ck spoke at my high school graduation). So, from the pro herself: girl, clean your phone screen.

Add a Prop

Unless I'm biting my fingernails, I don't know what to do with my hands. If you're also a nervous nelly, consider some prop work. No, I'm not talking about a foam finger. Opt to re-create a dainty, candid action you very well might do if you were lounging at home not posing for a nude. Twirl a strand of your hair, gently use your pointer finger to trace your collarbone, or lightly finger the strap of your bra. This will give you an action to focus on while you snap, which will make you feel less awkward about the whole boudoir photo shoot thing.

Leave 'Em Wanting More

While there's nothing wrong with flaunting your fine self, make sure your boo thang respects that the nude buck stops with them. If you want a little more anonymity, you can always resort to not including your face in your picture. When I'm feeling shy but still care about #content (because, priorities), I prefer to cut most of my head out of an image, only leaving my lips and chin in the frame. I've found it's a great balance between looking sexy and staying cautious.

Barbie Foot It Up

Models and Instagram ladies galore have flocked aboard the Barbie footing train, and it's how they get their legs to look so damn long (other than by being born with mile-long legs, of course). All you have to do is stand on the ball of your foot, as if you were balancing on your tip-toes, but a little more relaxed. Bonus points go to the dedicated souls who opt to paint their toenails a neutral hue - this is an extra slimming step that helps you look even taller.

Power Pose That B*tch

Take it from a former horse girl: stand up straight, keep your shoulders back, and pop your chest out. Not only does this easy trick give the lucky recipient of your nude a great view of your boobs, but it's a smart psychological play. When you do your best Wonder Woman (shoulders open, legs apart, optional hand on hip), you may decrease production of the stress hormone cortisol. It's the posture equivalent of "faking it until you make it" - but there's nothing faux about the confidence boost you'll feel.

Act Natural

Don't overthink things. The sexiest look is your most authentic self, so you shouldn't try too hard. If you're normally an open-mouthed smiler, do that. If you usually pout for pictures, then duck face to your heart's content. To play up your features, try lighting your image with actual sunshine coming in from a (secluded) window. Make sure the source of it is illuminating your picture from the front so you don't end up with a grainy, back-lit effect.

Say cheese, queen.

Curious About Instagram's New Questions Sticker? We've Got Answers

Your Instagram Stories are about to get a whole lot more interactive! Between the emoji slider and sharing your favorite music with your followers, it's hard to imagine a time when our Stories were just simple photos or videos. Now, Instagram has unveiled a new Questions sticker for our followers to ask us questions and engage with us on an entirely new level. Whether you're asking your favorite influencer which products she used to get that gorgeous highlight or you absolutely must find out your friend's mac and cheese recipe, the interactive possibilities are endless.

Here's how it works: after taking a photo or video for your Instagram Stories, tap the smiley face icon on the top right corner where you find your stickers. Click the new "Questions" sticker in the third row, type a prompt where it says "Ask me a question," and place it anywhere on your story. When viewers watch your Story, they can reply to the sticker with any of their burning questions - and the best part is, they can ask as many questions they want. You can find the questions and replies to your prompt where you typically see who viewed your story. To answer a question, simply tap it in the "Responses" list and reply in a new story. (The original question will appear "for context;" however, the user who asked the question will be private.)

Read on to see exactly how to use the new Questions feature, and get to 'gramming.

The Simple Thing I Started Doing That Made My Marriage Infinitely Better

I'll admit I'm a pretty difficult person to be in a relationship (let alone live) with. I can be messy, disorganized, and cluttered. When my husband and I first started dating, I would frequently forget plans, misremember doctor appointments, and not keep track of meetings. But a few years ago, I decided it was finally time to get my personal and professional life in order and diligently keep track of my schedule and appointments.

Although I bought a few cute paper planners, none of them really stuck; it's hard to keep up with a physical planner, especially as plans and appointments shift around. Sure, I could use the calendar app on my iPhone, but that didn't always transfer the appointments I had on my Gmail calendar.

Enter the Google Calendar app. I started using shared Google Calendar events when we were engaged to keep track of all of our appointments: food tastings, vendor meetings, engagement photo sessions, and when invoices were due. It worked so well for us, I continue to use it throughout our marriage.

Not only does this help keep my life in order, but it totally transformed my marriage. With the Google Calendar app, I can make appointments and share them with my husband. Now, there's no more confusion over what time our dinner reservations are, when our flight leaves, and which days our bills come out of our joint account. The best part is it syncs with my personal Gmail, so any event I put on my Gmail calendar on my desktop transfers to my phone app. It also picks up other relevant emails and plugs them into the calendar, such as flight reservations and plans made via email.

On our Google Calendar, I keep track of everything that affects our lives, including bills, when we are having visitors, flights, doctor appointments, after-work events, weddings, dinner plans, and happy hours. Instead of keeping these appointments to myself, I always invite my husband so he can also know our plans and be up-to-date on evenings when I'll be home late from work.

In the nearly two years we've been using shared Google Calendar events, we no longer get into arguments over what our weekend plans are or what time we need to be somewhere. Sure, I still leave my suitcase in the living room for a few days after a vacation and forget to dust, but at least we have our schedule in order.

Hurry! 10 Family Trips You Should Take When Your Kids Are Still Young

It's easy to get stuck in a vacation rut when your kids are young. Once you find a spot that has kid-friendly accommodations and activities, a host of childcare help, and a won't-break-the-bank price tag, it's tempting to return again and again. But the best time to broaden your family vacation horizons is when your kids are young enough to be wonder-filled, but not so young that the idea of taking them anywhere beyond grandma's house is totally overwhelming. There are so many remarkable American vacation spots to discover (though, if you're really brave, Europe can be kid-friendly, too).

The following 10 trips are all sure to be a hit with both children and parents, featuring sweet attractions, child-specific programs that mean mom and dad can relax on vacation, and some spectacular sites that even the youngest eyes will appreciate. From National Parks to kid meccas (that's Disney, duh), here are 10 trips you should plan before your kids get too old.

Visiting a Disney Park on a Hot Day? This Reusable Cooling Towel Will Be a Lifesaver

Here's a Disney tip for you: don't make the mistake of forgetting to check the weather before planning your visit to Disneyland (like I did). The fact that it was already 80 degrees out at 7 a.m. should've been the first sign to stay home, but we headed over to good ol' Anaheim despite the early heat. As soon as we entered the park, my sweaty boyfriend and I ran into the first gift shop on Main Street in search of any sort of cloth that would soak up the sweat on our faces. Once a cast member realized why we were so excited about a dish towel, she recommended a life-saving product that neither of us even knew existed: a cooling towel by Disney Parks ($17).

She explained that all you need to do is add water, wring it, and then snap it to activate a cooling effect that lasts for hours. It was reusable, machine washable, and exactly what we needed - except it was already sold out everywhere. We decided to just tough it out with our mini misting fan, staring at park-goers who were able to snag their own cooling towel with jealousy. The temperature eventually climbed to just below 100, but the one perk was that both Disneyland and California Adventure were empty.

On our way out of the parks, we stopped by Downtown Disney where we found the very last cooling towels outside of World of Disney. It was too late for us by that point, but we wished someone had told us about this product beforehand (you're welcome). Luckily, Walmart sells the exact same Disney Parks Mickey Mouse Cooling Towel for a steeper price point at $25. If I were you, I'd buy this far ahead of your own park visit.

Everything You Need to Know About Removing Lip Filler

These Absolute Best Sunscreens to Protect Your Tattoos From Fading

Protecting your skin from UV rays is an important step in any skincare routine all year long, but in the Summer months, when sitting in the sun for hours is the norm, it's vital to apply (and reapply) your sunscreen - especially on tattooed skin. Without proper protection, the sun can dull a tattoo's colors and cause it to fade much quicker over time, effectively ruining the tat you likely spent a pretty penny on.

To ensure that your tattoo is protected from the sun, all you need is a safe lotion or spray sunscreen that, spoiler alert, you can use on the rest of your body. That's right, tattoos - whether super tiny or covering your entire body - don't need anything special when it comes to sun care, so whatever you use on your body is perfect for coating your ink with.

That said, based on effectiveness, price, and user reviews, we've rounded up some of the best sunscreens on the market for all skin tones and types to help protect all of your skin from the sun's harmful (but oh-so-sweet) rays. And if you're more into physical blockers, like zinc oxide, we've got you covered there, too.

This Is the Perfect Foundation For People Who Hate Foundation

I'd like to think that I've been blessed with a variety of talents in life - like being able to make people laugh or my athleticism - but doing my makeup is not one of them. Actually, the ability to do anything hair or makeup-related completely skipped a generation in my family. A majority of the time, I subscribe to the minimalistic lifestyle, but other times, I wish I had a few basic beauty skills.

Thankfully, my side gig as a fitness model gives me access to industry pros, and I listen for tips and tricks every time I'm in the makeup chair before a shoot. That's where I learned about the RMS "Un" Cover-Up concealer/foundation. This formula made application so smooth and hydrating that I thought the makeup artist was applying a serum or lotion to my skin. It didn't feel like I was wearing layers of makeup, and it matched my complexion perfectly. Plus, the two-in-one product is completely nontoxic and formulated without any controversial ingredients, so I can feel good about what I put on my skin . . . when I do choose to put anything on, that is.

The formula is pretty much foolproof for my beauty-challenged self - so even if you're clumsy with application and have no idea what "baking" or "contouring" means, you can still use it. All you have to do is dab a brush into the pot (or, if you're like me, you can use your fingers) and blend it in circular motions onto your skin. Who knew looking like a glowing goddess could be so simple?

The Surprising Way Your Eye Shadow Primer Can Make That Zit Disappear

I have over-the-top oily skin. When I look in the mirror around lunch, the oil on my face has usually cut through my makeup and caused a reflective shine on my face. For years, I'd seriously stress out whenever I broke out in a hard, cystic pimple, knowing that any amount of concealer would likely wear off by noon.

One day, while browsing YouTube, I learned a tip that would change my makeup game forever. I found YouTube blogger Nikkia Joy's channel, where she frequently talks about how different foundations fare on oily complexions. She also had an incredible tip for making sure concealer stays on a pimple all day: use eye shadow primer underneath your concealer.

I tried the tip with my favorite Laura Mercier Eye Basics ($28) the next time my period came around and I got a honking zit on my chin, and was amazed that it really worked. I've always thought the primer did an incredible job making my eye shadow last all day, so I guess I shouldn't have been surprised it worked so well on my concealer as well. I've been using this tip ever since, and it has become my go-to every time I break out.

What a Dermatologist Wishes You Knew About Protecting Your Scalp From the Sun

When you head outside for a day in the sun, you probably slather sunscreen on all the usual spots: your arms, legs, back, and face. But there's a part of your body you may be completely forgetting that's just as susceptible to sunburn and skin cancer: your scalp.

"People often forget that - of all the parts of our body that need protection from the sun - none of them face the sky more directly than our scalps," dermatologist Ross C. Radusky, MD, told POPSUGAR. Even if your head is covered with hair (and especially if it isn't), that doesn't mean it's safe from harmful UV rays. In fact, skin cancer can still show up on your scalp and hairline, and you can still get burned where your hair parts.

Luckily, Dr. Radusky has outlined five easy ways to protect your scalp from heat, rays, sun damage, and potential skin cancer. Be sure you're not ignoring this vulnerable body part and that you're also loading up on the proper SPF all over your body.

Someone Get Us a Cold Compress- Ashley Graham's Bikinigrams Are Too Effing Hot

When it comes to rocking the hell out of a bikini, it really doesn't get much sexier than Ashley Graham. The model and body activist is no stranger to flaunting her curves on the runway or in magazine spreads, and she damn sure doesn't hold back when wearing skimpy lil' swimsuits.

Ashley has no problem showing off her physique in one-pieces, strapless bandeaus, triangle tops, and more. Heck, she loves a good swim look so much that she created her own collection with Swimsuits For All, inspiring women of all shapes and sizes to embrace their bikini bodies. If that alone isn't sexy AF, then we don't know what is.

We've rounded up Graham's hottest looks ahead so you can see for yourself. Good luck trying not to catch heat stroke scrolling through these bikinigrams.

The Pros and Cons of Using Retinol - Plus, When You Should Start

Retinol is touted as a holy grail ingredient for smoothing out fine lines, helping with skin texture and tone, and getting a youthful glow over time. This MVP ingredient promises to fight the signs of aging by encouraging cell turnover. But how does it actually work? And how should you incorporate it into your skincare routine to see results?

Retinol
is a type of vitamin A - also found in foods like carrots, milk, and eggs - that naturally occurs in our skin. When applied and absorbed into the skin, enzymes convert retinol to retinoic acid, which stimulates the production of healthy new skin cells (kind of like Baby Foot, without the snake-like shedding).

Over-the-counter retinols typically range from 0.1 to 1.0 percent concentrations - the higher the concentration, the more potent it is. It's recommended to apply retinol products at night and to start slow - once or twice a week - and work your way up, depending on how your skin tolerates it. Also, since retinol can dry out your skin and boost its sensitivity, moisturize and slather on SPF during the day to further protect your skin.

Along with retinol, there are a few other "R" words out there - namely, Retin-A and retinoids. Basically, retinol and Retin-A are both different types of retinoids. Retinol is in over-the-counter products that can treat wrinkles and improve skin texture. Retin-A (the brand name for Tretinoin) is a more potent form of vitamin A that treats acne.

Now that you have a better idea of what retinol can do for your skin, watch the latest episode of POPSUGAR beauty explainer series The Makeup for more retinol tips and product recommendations from our resident beauty expert, Kirbie Johnson.

I Tried This 1 BB Cream and I Don't Have to Wear Foundation Anymore

While I do love makeup, I've always always struggled finding a great foundation that fully covers my stubborn dark spots, which has made me despise trying products. While I have been treating my scars using serums every night, I still have to deal with them during the day, which has meant caking my face up with foundation. I quickly became frustrated with a) how much time was getting wasted every morning applying it and b) the aforementioned cakey feeling I get even when I don't apply that much product on. Enter Guerlain's BB Cream.

I discovered this miracle product, which released back in 2016, while I visited the brand's spa in Dubai, and let me just say it felt like the universe was finally saying, "Hey! You deserve this, girl." I actually bought the product on a whim (I was currently on a facial high since my skin looked so great after getting one), but I'm so glad I did. Now, mornings are easier and getting ready takes half the time it usually does. All I have to do is just apply a pump on the back of my hand and brush it onto my face like I would with foundation.

The product is super lightweight, which is great if you don't want to deal with that sticky feeling all day. Plus, it saves me from applying both sunscreen and highlighter because it literally makes my skin look like it's clear and glowing. If you're looking to ditch your foundation like I did, you can buy a tube of this goodness ahead.

This Cool Indie Lip Balm Doubles as a Blush - and It's Just $9

Like they say, a girl never forgets her first lip/cheek tint. (Or is that just me?) I've never gotten married or had a baby, but I can't imagine that even a huge event like that could make me feel as great as the first time I swept the Burberry Lip & Cheek Bloom along my cheeks. Such duos are like the makeup version of a combination Dunkin' Donuts/Baskin-Robbins - everything you could ever ask for in one place. In a few easy motions, I can add color to my overtired, zombie-looking complexion. Everything in life should be so simple.

I consider the Burberry option, with its prim-and-proper plaid tin packaging, a ride-or-die product. Unfortunately for me, it's also $30. Innisfree, the K-beauty brand behind one of my favorite mousse masks ever, just launched a $9 iteration called My Lip Balm. Since I've been feeling particularly thrifty ever since I signed the lease for an apartment I can barely afford, I decided to test this option - and see how it stands up to 90-degree weather.

On a scorching day when I wanted nothing on my face but SPF and huge-ass sunglasses, I built up the courage to swipe the Dried Rose Tea balm on my lips. Though the formula is heavy, it glides right on. If I do say so myself, my lips look juicy - even I'd make out with me. As a blush, the color gives off a natural but still visible flush - think Glossier's Cloud Paint. You can apply it with your bare hands, which eliminates the need of a purse full of makeup brushes that are overdue for a wash, and it sticks to your face longer than the average powder does.

Best of all, the rosy tint - dare I say glow - you get from this tiny tube looks like Summer in a bottle. Since it's so inexpensive, you can even get two . . . which will last you long into Fall.

How Mercury Retrograde Affects Your Beauty Horoscope - and How to Deal

An Aries, Leo, and Capricorn walk into a bar.

The Aries shamelessly hits on the bartender, effectively taking all the attention away from the Leo (who, obviously, is trying to order the $38 glass of cabernet sauvignon). But, while the Capricorn has calculated that the situation could implode in 2.5 minutes, the night seems to go off without a hitch.

Had the scenario played out while Mercury were in retrograde, however, and things might look entirely different - which is exactly how you should think of your beauty routine from July 26 through August 19, regardless of your sign. Like the AstroTwins Tali and Ophira Edut told POPSUGAR: "Mercury in retrograde is all about messing up people's schedules, so be sure to leave yourself enough time for appointments and come prepared."

Luckily, you needn't stumble over your astrological to-dos. The AstroTwins teamed up with popular nail brand Essie to deliver your updated beauty horoscope for the Summer - and offered a few fun tips on looking good while getting through the trying times. Better to be prepared than drunk, no?

5 Products That Will Save You From Uncomfortable Thigh Chafing This Summer

I have never in my life had a thigh gap; my legs have rubbed together for as long as I can remember, so much so that I regularly experience uncomfortable skin chafing between my legs. Although it's never a problem in the Winter, the moment skirt and sundress season rolls around, my thighs are glued to one another, creating the most painful and unpleasant skin rash. Add in the sweat that comes from walking around the city or beach on a warm Summer day, and it's a recipe for disaster.

Fortunately, if you experience much of the same, you don't have to suffer in silence. I've found some tried-and-true products from Amazon that have solved my thigh chafing problem. Click ahead to see my picks, and get ready to embrace skirt and swimsuit season - pain-free.

The 1 Foundation That Functions Just As Well at the Gym As It Does at the Office

I'm a sucker for a good foundation. I've tried just about every kind out there (and have an army of bottles in nearly every corner of my house to prove it). My ideal formula is a multitasker: it needs to cover up enough so I can look polished at work, but also be lightweight enough that I can wear it to the gym afterward without worrying about clogging my pores. And finally, I want my foundation to be cruelty-free because I'm vegan, and packed with high-quality, natural ingredients.

It's a tall order, but I finally found a foundation that does all that: Atmosphere Soft Focus Foundation from Vapour Organic Beauty. I loved it the instant I tried it - for more reasons than one. Ahead, I've rounded up exactly why this is one tube I'll never go without again.

Why I'm Not Forcing My Bridesmaids to Get Their Makeup Done For My Wedding

As a soon-to-be bride, I'm very aware of the fact that getting married involves a hell of a lot of planning for the day to go off without a hitch. But you know who else has a lot on their plate when the wedding rolls around? The bridesmaids. They are already expected to attend the engagement dinner, my bridal shower, bachelorette party, ceremony, and reception - so the very least I could do is let them decide whether or not they want to get their makeup done that day.

While I'm the first to admit that I'm pretty low-maintenance as far as bridal expectations go, I think it's completely normal to let grown-ass women choose whether or not they want to wear makeup - to a wedding or anywhere else. Here's why.

How One Beauty Brand Is Using Lipstick to Fight Trump's Border Policy

Update: According to Lipslut, this campaign has earned over $100,000 to fight the Zero Tolerance policy. There is still time to contribute; until July 19, all proceeds for the brand's F*ck Trump Lipstick go towards organizations such as Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES), Kids in Need of Defense, Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center, Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights, and Al Otro Lado. All of these charities advocate for the youngest and most vulnerable immigrants stranded at the border.

Original post: Since the beginning of May, more than 2,300 children have been separated from their parents at the US-Mexico border, per President Donald's Trump's "Zero Tolerance" immigration policy. Heartbreaking stories of babies torn away from their mothers while they breastfed and border agents detaining children in cages have drawn massive outrage from many Americans.

On June 20, President Trump said that he would sign an executive order ending the separation, but it's easy to feel helpless in the face of this policy - especially until the papers have been signed. Luckily, there are many ways you can help the affected children. If you love lipstick, you should know that there is one company that's currently donating all of its proceeds to various organizations with efforts to keep families together.

Last year, a student named Katie Sones founded Lipslut, a beauty brand dedicated to fighting the patriarchy one lipstick at a time. The brand's sole shade upon launch came immediately after Trump took office, which was a chestnut pink named F*ck Trump ($20), and the company later added a F*ck Hollywood power red in the wake of #MeToo. From now until July 19, all of the proceeds from F*ck Trump will go toward organizations such as Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES), Kids in Need of Defense, Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center, Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights, and Al Otro Lado. All of these charities advocate for the youngest and most vulnerable immigrants stranded at the border.

As Sones told POPSUGAR, the brand was born on January 20, 2017, the first day of the current administration. "I was literally watching Trump's inauguration and decided I had to take action," Sones said. "I created Lipslut after recognizing my passion for cosmetics could be used as a vehicle to inspire social activism. It's meant to be a middle finger to the current socio-political landscape." Along with budding brands like Lipstick Lobby, which donates its profits to of-the-moment causes such as gun violence prevention, and Fluide, a nonbinary label that donates to LGBTQ+ organizations, F*ck Trump is yet another example that one of 2018's best beauty trends isn't a color or style, but rather a means of social and political movements - in one fell swoop, you can change the world and look great doing it.
