This Cheap Wine From Walmart Is Ranked as One of the Best in the World
If you're one of those people who orders the cheapest glass of wine on the menu because you can't tell the difference (no shame), this news is going to make your day. A $7 bottle of wine sold at Walmart has been ranked as one of the best in the world by Decanter Magazine, which covers wine and spirits. The award-winning red wine is La Moneda Reserva's Malbec, a Chilean wine whose description notes that it has a "deep purple color with violet tints, rounded and velvety tannins, complex plum, fig, and strawberry flavors and excellent length."
The wine earned the title of Platinum Best in Show at the 2015 Decanter World Wine Awards, where more than 200 experts tasted thousands of wines (blindly!), proving that a wine's price tag is not always associated with its quality. The best part is the wine is now available for the first time at Walmart locations in the US, after previously only being sold by Walmart's UK-based grocery brand, Asda. Note that wine is an in-store-only purchase at Walmart, so you can't buy it online. Check the online store locator to see if it's in stock near you. If you volunteer to bring the wine to dinner, you'll be able to impress your family and friends with this award-winning bottle - they'll never have to know the cost.
This Beach in South Africa Is COVERED With Penguins, and You Can Take Photos With Them!
Newsflash: you don't have to freeze your face off in Antarctica to hang out with penguins. You can get up close and personal with the aquatic birds in a much warmer, Summer-approved locale: South Africa. About 30 miles south of Cape Town is Boulders Beach, a rocky cove that's home to thousands of adorable African penguins. Also known as "jackass penguins" for their donkey-like whinnying, this particular species is endangered, but that doesn't stop them from living their best lives in the sunny South African climate. The black-and-white cuties spend their days waddling around, swimming in the ocean, and posing for photos with tourists (sounds pretty relaxing to us!).
If you're interested in visiting Boulders Beach soon, we've got a few facts and pointers to pass along first:
- Boulders is located in Simon's Town, South Africa, and is part of Table Mountain National Park.
- The beach is public, but there's a small entrance fee that helps maintain the grounds.
- If you prefer to view the penguins from afar, there's an elevated boardwalk to admire them from.
- You can swim in the water, but it'll likely be pretty frigid.
- Visitors are advised to avoid touching or feeding the penguins. They have razor-sharp beaks, and they're not afraid to use 'em if they feel threatened.
- During popular Summer months, parking can be scarce, so it's suggested to arrive as early as possible on the day of your visit.
- The adjacent beach, Foxy Beach, is also inhabited by penguins and is typically less crowded than Boulders.
Ready to book your tickets to South Africa so you can visit this heavenly spot? Browse through the photos below as a virtual tour of sorts, and you'll certainly feel inclined to start planning your trip to hang out with the African penguins ASAP.
I Finally Found a Cat House That's Stylish Enough to Display - For Only $65 on Amazon!
When it comes to pets, some owners love shelling out cash left and right on fluffy beds and adorable trinkets. I'm not one of those people. My cat's favorite toy is a crumpled up paper towel. I had one exception though, I always wanted to buy him one of those cat house towers. For the longest time I wasn't able to commit to actually buying one because I was afraid of having a carpeted eye sore in my living room. A few months ago, I took the plunge and got this Vesper Small V-Box ($65) from Amazon, and I haven't regret it for a second.
I was immediately drawn to its modern design. It didn't look like your run of the mill, cheesy cat bed. The walnut-colored wood adds a chic touch, and the fluffy white bedding looks and feels like something I want to nap on. The stylish house doesn't lack in the cat department either. It features a scratching post (which thankfully my cat now uses more than my sofa), a fun hanging toy, and a comfy bed box at the bottom.
It has exceeded my expectations in both looks and functionality, and was worth every penny. If you have more than one cat, it also comes in larger options. Keep scrolling to shop.
I Decorated a 760-Square-Foot Apartment - Here's What Was Worth Buying
When I signed the lease for my first apartment, I immediately dreaded finding furniture small enough to fit inside. At just 760 square feet, this little one-bedroom box did not have "so much room for activities." No, when my boyfriend and I took measurements of the space, we were not feeling like Brennan and Dale in Step Brothers, that's for sure. I actually felt myself gulp when I looked at my closet.
Even still, we loved the sleek, modern appliances and the marble counter top. We were beyond stoked to choose our bedding, the curtains - the things we'd have to have! We went on a hunt to find some really gorgeous pieces that came at the right size, and especially, price. (Though I will say, I do think it's OK to splurge on at least one or two items you really love.)
Decor is also super important to me, and I believe that a home should reflect personality, so I kept our quirks and our hobbies in mind while shopping. I even discovered a handful of fashion brands with home lines that I never knew about. Read on to see what was worth buying, and how we organized and displayed everything once we were settled. Keep that credit card handy, too, because I'm about to show you some really cute stuff.

35 Things You'll Regret Doing in Life
"Life is too short" is so cliché, but also so true. Not to sound morbid, but our days are limited and we never know when our time will be up. We tend to think we're invincible, especially when we're young, and don't often live to the fullest because we don't think of the bigger picture. We let ourselves get caught up in such trivial things that seem silly when we look back, or we don't take care of ourselves until our bodies give us a clear and scary sign to. Mindfulness is one way to practice living in the present, and all it really takes is to step back every once in a while to reflect on your choices. You only live once, after all, so why not make this a life without any regrets? See 35 things you'll regret doing down the line and consider changing a few things for yourself.

Someone Tried to Mom-Shame Kourtney Kardashian on Vacation, and Then This Happened
If there are two things the Kardashian women know best, it's bikini photos and family love - so when someone tried to mom-shame Kourtney Kardashian for posting a stunning bathing suit photo on vacation, let's just say it didn't end well. The mom of three has been living her absolute best life yachting around Italy with her gorgeous boyfriend, family, and friends for the past few weeks, which naturally means a lot of Instagram posts. But her photos weren't the only thing heating up our feeds because when one Instagram user felt the need to question her parenting skills in the comments section, Kourtney responded with an incredibly valid burn.
"Where are your kids," the user asked below a photo of the 39-year-old mom in a bikini with a focaccia bread basket (yum). The account @commentsbycelebs captured Kourtney's mic-drop response, and it's worthy of applause. "My son was taking the photo, and the other two were sitting a table across from me. Thank you so much for your concern," she wrote.
Yes, it is possible to look gorgeous in a bathing suit and still be a good mother - just take it from Kourtney. Her three children - Mason, Penelope, and Reign - have been living it up on vacation with their mom (and even if hadn't been present, she is still allowed to enjoy a trip without her children). Sheesh! Read on to see photos of Kourtney and her kids soaking up the Summer sun.
6-Year-Old Twins Spotted a 3-Year-Old Drowning and Jumped Into Action to Save Her Life
Twin brothers Peyton and Bryant Switzer, who are just 6 years old, are being hailed as heroes after saving a 3-year-old girl from drowning in a hotel pool in Orlando, FL. The boys were playing at the pool with their mom's fiancé when they noticed a young girl wander away from her family, take her flotation device off, and jump into the deep end of the pool, sinking straight to the bottom. Having just learned about drowning in their swimming lessons, they both recognized that the toddler was drowning and immediately sprung to action.
"[Peyton] jumped in and put his arm around her. Then he gave her to me, and I got her out," Bryant told BG Independent News of the teamwork between him and his brother.

The boys' swim teacher at the at Bowling Green, OH, city pool says that Peyton and Bryant are very strong swimmers, and their mom, Amy Walters, says they're "little fish" who would live in the water if given permission.
"[The little girl] had seen the big boys playing and splashing around," Amy said. "They didn't even think twice. They went into action. We're very proud of them." Their father, Ryan Walters, who says the boys swim regularly at his house, added, "You never expect them to save somebody else, you just want to teach them to swim."

Although the near-drowning occurred while the family was on vacation in Florida, the state of Ohio, proud of their young citizens, honored Peyton and Bryant with certificates for heroism and bravery. "Thus, with great pride and satisfaction, we honor you for your heroism and salute you as one of Ohio's finest citizens," read Ohio Rep. Theresa Gavarone, R-Bowling Green. "You are certainly to be commended for your courage. At a time when many people are content to take a passive role in life, you took an active role in helping a fellow citizen, and you have earned the gratitude of the young girl and her family."
The state representative added: "Swimming is the one skill you can teach your kids that can save lives. It's great to see that they've taken their skills that they've learned here and put them in action."

The most vulnerable population in terms of drowning are toddlers, but drowning doesn't look how you think it does, which is why we all need to remain vigilant around bodies of water with small children. "A typical drowning victim that doesn't necessarily need to be submerged in the water, is someone who is motionless, just above the water, but is probably experiencing laryngospasm (when water is taken in through the nose and/or mouth, causing the vocal cords to spasm and close)," Dr. Evan Weiner, the director of emergency medicine at St. Christopher's Hospital For Children in Philadelphia, told POPSUGAR. "This is in contrast to the Hollywood drowning victim thrashing in the water."
The Unwritten Sex Rule My Husband and I Have: Once a Week Is Good
Sex once a week - this is the unwritten and unsaid rule my husband and I have stood by pretty much since the "I've gotta have you right now" phase fizzled. And let's be honest, that fire often dwindles after those first few years of newlywed bliss and comes dangerously close to being put out altogether when you have kids. But as long as you make an effort, a flame will always be there - sometimes small, sometimes big. For my husband and I, that effort happens once a week. And after talking with many of my friends about this unwritten sex rule, it turns out we're not alone.
After the baby phase, I realized that being intimate with my husband was something that I should make a priority again, not only for him, but for myself.
My friends and I have no shame when talking about our sex lives with our partners (something our husbands are well aware of). We talk about it all: what kind of contraception we use (or don't use), different positions, when we got caught by the kids, and more. But despite our varying sex opinions, we unanimously agree that we try to do it once a week. We've all come to find that if we let the kids run the house and can't fit in getting laid once a week, it's easy to fall into a rut (which has happened to all of us at some point).
My kids are a little older now at 4 and 6, so they're not draining my energy as much as they used to. When they were babies, my husband and I had to schedule sex - romantic, right? But at least we got the job done. Today, our sex life can be much more spontaneous. If I say, "Let's turn a cartoon on for the kids," my husband knows exactly what that means. He runs to grab the remote and chases me into our bedroom. Parents of the year, I know, but we have no shame in our sex game. It's important to me to keep the spice going in our marriage, because when the kids were little, I felt like I never wanted to do it. And trust me, we let weeks go by without any kind of foreplay.
I could tell it affected my husband, too. But women? I've found that many of us are like marathon runners and can go much longer than our partners without sex - especially when the kids are young. After changing five blowouts, folding 20 tiny onesies, unloading the dishwasher, and breastfeeding 100 times in a day, who feels like being romanced in the bedroom? I sure as hell didn't. But after the baby phase, I realized that being intimate with my husband was something that I should make a priority again, not only for him, but for myself. It took effort to get back to a place where I really enjoyed sex again.
So, my husband and I follow our unwritten rule to get it on once a week. We keep track in our heads and never even have to talk about it. With one wink, it's on. I hope that my husband and I follow our "sex once a week" rule for as long as we can, because it's something that helps us keep the spark going in our marriage - one that we hope will never go out.
The 1 Bizarre Parenting Fear John Stamos Had Because of Full House
You'd think starring on a family-friendly show like Full House for eight years would prepare Uncle Jesse for parenthood, but even John Stamos admits that portraying father figures for most of his career has its drawbacks.
In fact, being a sitcom dad gave him a very surprising real-life parenting fear when he and his wife Caitlin McHugh welcomed their first child, Billy, in April.
"You think you know how it's going to be because I've been on TV with babies forever," Stamos told Entertainment Tonight. "But, and I'm not even making a joke out of this, I have a fear of handing the baby back. Like someone's going to yell, 'Cut!' and they are going to take my kid away from me."
Thankfully, Billy is all his: "That's the great thing, when nobody comes in and, you know, takes him."

I Got Acupuncture on My Face in the Name of Health and Wellness - Here's What Happened
Yes, you read that right: an acupuncture facial. I first found out about this treatment from Elaine Welteroth's (former editor in chief at Teen Vogue) Instagram story. She had documented the entire process and swore that it was something everyone must try at least once. Since I work out a lot, I'm always looking for new ways to give my skin some major TLC and get rid of all the dirt and other mysteries hiding in my pores.
How It Works
Stefanie DiLibero, L.Ac, cosmetic acupuncturist, and owner of Gotham Wellness, explained to me that cosmetic acupuncture combines Eastern medicine with Western technology to address issues like poor sleep and compromised digestion. Oftentimes, these problems can show up on the face as dark circles, puffiness, and acne.
The Process
First, Stefanie began with a Chinese medical intake to find out what areas to address during my treatment. I was asked what my concerns were (adult acne and hyperpigmentation) and what I was currently doing to treat my concerns. Next, we discussed my current skincare routine, where she gave me suggestions on what items to incorporate into my routine to combat my concerns. After that, the treatment began with Stefanie placing needles in my feet and legs. Then she treated the muscles and acupuncture meridians of my face with a microelectronic current.
"This helps to increase Qi and blood to the face, which gives the skin a brightness . . . and strengthens the muscles, which creates a natural facelift," Stefanie said. She also said that using a microelectronic current prepares the face for acupuncture by energizing the tissue of the face, making the effect of the needles stronger.
From here, Stefanie began to place acupuncture needles into different points on my face, scalp, ears, and neck to address internal imbalances (i.e., headaches and allergies) and others to relax muscles. Once the needles were in, she placed an LED light over my face to help reduce bacteria and inflammation and improve cellular health. This is all I remember, because I was so relaxed that I feel asleep on the table, waking up an hour later, once my session was over. The entire treatment took approximately two hours, and it was the most relaxed I have felt in a long time.
The Results
I would be lying if I said years of hyperpigmentation disappeared after two hours. The following day, I did notice that the puffiness that typically accompanies my 4:45 a.m. wake-up calls was practically gone. To date, I've only done one session with Stefanie, and my complexion is a lot better. Being that you can only do so many treatments externally, acupuncture is a great way to combat any internal issues. I also try my hardest to avoid dairy products, as they tend to contribute to my breakouts. Unfortunately, sweat from exercising also makes me break out, which is why I try to always wash my face immediately after a workout. In order to achieve long-lasting results, Stefanie recommended I come in every four to six weeks.
Shaun T Says This Is How He Balances Being a Parent to Twins and Staying in Shape
Shaun T took the fitness world by storm when he came up with one of Beachbody's most successful programs, Insanity. Now, as a new father to twin boys, Shaun T knows just how important it is to be efficient in the gym, which led him to create his newest program, Transform:20 (coming out in 2019) - the perfect workout for parents or anyone short on time.
When it comes to staying in shape as a parent, Shaun told POPSUGAR the best advice he received before the birth of Silas and Sander. "You have to bring the kids into your lifestyle," he shared. Instead of making excuses for why he didn't have time to work out, he explained, "It was more about, 'Oh, I'm going to actually be a dad, so I have to show them that health and fitness is a priority.'" According to Shaun, bringing his children into his lifestyle has allowed him and his husband Scott to avoid getting "dad bod."
If you can't wait for Shaun T's Transform:20 to drop, try these 20-minute workouts:

This Is the Simple Weightlifting Technique That Totally Changed My Body
We used to think of weightlifting as the kind of exercise only beefy dudes liked to do, but we now know that strength training is an essential part of a smart fitness program that will help you get lean and strong. I'm a gym rat who loves to lift weights multiple times a week, whether it's a classic weightlifting session (squats, deadlifts, etc.) or a kettlebell flow program. Strength training of all kinds helped me shed excess fat, build lean muscle, and feel better than ever, and I now pass along this kind of training to my clients.
There's one weightlifting tip that I wish I had known earlier in my fitness career: how to use the drop set. A drop set in weightlifting is when you perform a set of any exercise with a heavy-enough weight that you can't make it through all the reps without failing. Then you reduce the weight and finish out the set.
For example, when I was working on my triceps extensions on the cable machine, I would start with 20 pounds and work toward 12 reps per set. But I could only make it to about eight or nine reps without failing, so rather than just leaving it at that, I would drop the weight to 15 pounds and finish out the set.
This worked great for me when I felt like I was stuck in between two different weights and I didn't want to do the lower weight for the whole set because it didn't feel hard enough. Utilizing the drop set in this way helped me get stronger faster, which allowed me to build lean muscle and shed faster quicker.
The drop set is a common technique used in bodybuilding and there are all sorts of ways to use it, but I stuck with this simple variation because it worked wonders for me. I saw amazing lean muscle definition in just a couple weeks. Plus, I never reached a plateau; I could see consistent changes in my physique month after month.
If you're looking for a way to up your strength-training routine, give drop sets a try. You can use this technique with just about any classic weightlifting movement, like squats, deadlifts, rows, push presses, etc.
Cannabis 101: Everything You Need to Know About Weed
As marijuana use continues to become legalized around the country (and most recently, Canada), it's no wonder a rising number of adults are open to learning more about it. Gone are the days when one used to just ask their dealer for "whatever you've got." Modern cannabis has grown to encompass hundreds of unique strains that come in a variety of consumption methods and doses that fit the needs of every type of consumer. But all this comes with some required knowledge, like the difference between a sativa and indica, for example. If cannabis has recently piqued your interest, read on to get fully educated ahead.
Where is recreational marijuana currently legal?
- Alaska
- California
- Colorado
- Maine
- Massachusetts
- Nevada
- Oregon
- Washington
What's the difference between a sativa and an indica strain?
Think of sativas as your daytime weed; great for being active and social. Indicas on other hand are ideal to ingest before bed, as they generally make you sleepy, or for a relaxing night in. Hybrids offer the best of both worlds, although there are sativa-dominant hybrids and indica-dominant hybrids, as well.
What forms does cannabis come in?
- Flower/bud - for smoking or vaping
- Hash oil cartridges - for vaping
- Edibles (cookies, chocolates, chips, infused beverages, etc.) - for consuming
- Hash or wax (cannabis concentrates) - for dabbing (heating on a hot surface)
Weed can also be infused in a variety of products including bath salts, lotions, and salves.
What's the best consumption method for beginners?
I always recommend newbies to smoke or vape for their first time because the effects are instant and therefore easier to gauge. Edibles can take 30 minutes to two hours to kick in, which often results in impatient overdoses. Edibles are also more difficult to measure unless they come in the form of low- and precisely dosed chocolates or gummies. I'd also stay away from bongs for your first go.
How much should I smoke/eat?
Always, always start low and go slow. See how your body reacts after one hit and wait about half an hour before taking your next puff. Most strains range between 18 and 22 percent THC, but you may want to look for varieties ranging on the lower end with noticeable amounts of CBD. As for edibles, start around 2 to 5mg THC.
What's the difference between THC and CBD?
There are a hundred-plus cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, but the most well-known are CBD and THC. THC is responsible for making you feel "high," while CBD is nonpsychoactive (at least in recommended doses) and counteracts some of THC's adverse effects such as paranoia. Together, they produce that euphoric and relaxing high we enjoy.
What is CBD oil?
It's a cannabidiol (CBD) extract that's most popularly taken orally in the form a tincture. It doesn't have a mind-altering effect (unless you take more than the recommended dose) and is known to help with anxiety, sleep, pain, and epileptic seizures. It's all-natural and safe and legal as long as its packaging specifies that it's "hemp-derived." You also don't have to worry about CBD showing up on a drug test, either. Although CBD oil is most popular, it can also be enjoyed in the form of vapes, topicals, and edibles.
What will I feel when I'm high?
It really depends on the strain and the individual, but you can expect to feel all or some of the following: uplifted, euphoric, giggly, hungry, sleepy, relaxed, calm, and/or creative. You may also notice pain relief. Additionally, I always recommend that people smoke or ingest weed in a safe space with people they're comfortable with, as some adverse effects can include paranoia and anxiety.
What should I do if I get too high?
Don't worry - this happens to even the most seasoned stoners. Taking CBD has shown to be effective in reversing the adverse affects of THC, but if you don't have any CBD readily available, the most important thing to do is to get as comfortable as possible. Take deep, slow breaths and reduce any stimuli (turn down/off music, TV volume, etc.), or look for a quiet space if you're not at home. Being in crowded settings can induce more anxiety, so try to remove yourself from hectic situations. Unfortunately, the only thing you can really do is ride it out or sleep it off.
What are the benefits of cannabis?
The number of cannabis's medicinal benefits is endless, but here are the biggest, to name a few:
- Antiepileptic
- Antianxiety
- Antinausea
- Pain relief
- Anti-inflammatory
- Sleep aid
- Antispasticity (generally for multiple sclerosis)
- Antipain (nociceptive, neuropathic, and central)
Is marijuana addictive?
Smoking weed once or a even a few times will not result in an addiction. When we consulted a neuroscientist, Josh Kaplan, PhD, about the risks of regular usage, he shared that cannabis dependency is possible but not common. Around 10 percent of users become dependent from frequent consumption, but only rare cases of "true cannabis addiction" have been reported so far. But it's also worth noting that the risk is increasing as modern products contain more THC. One group that shouldn't use cannabis is adolescents, as cannabis use can impact their cognitive development.
Are there any health risks that come with marijuana consumption?
The long-term consequences of cannabis on cardiovascular risk are still unclear. According to Dr. Kaplan, "High amounts of THC may have negative long-term consequences on the heart by promoting plaque development" - however, "CBD seems to be protective against this." Additionally, these tests were conducted with synthetic versions of THC, which are often stronger than the THC found in cannabis. Marijuana smoke does contain carcinogens and cocarcinogens, but it has far less risk for lung complications compared with cigarettes, and the risk can be improved once you stop. Additionally vaping has shown to be less harmful than smoking as vaporizers heat instead of burn, though there are limited studies.
If Any of These Signs Relate to You, You Need to Change Your Birth Control Method
One of the many burdens that come with being a woman is birth control. As great as it is for preventing unwanted pregnancies, it's up to us to pick up our monthly prescriptions, to wear a patch, to get a shot, or to get a vaginal ring or IUD inserted inside of us. Not to mention the pains that come with each birth control method. But what many of us aren't aware of is that side effects, like bad cramps and moodiness, aren't in fact part of the deal. What you're experiencing may be a sign that your birth control isn't the right match for your body.
"If you feel depressed, out of whack, tired, moody, or just not right, then your birth control isn't working," Dr. Prudence Hall, gynecologist and founder of the Hall Center, told POPSUGAR.
See if any of the following signs from One Medical provider Jessica Lue-Lai, MD, relate to you:
- You're bleeding or cramping heavily: Yes, excessive bleeding and cramping isn't something you have to live with! According to Dr. Lue-Lai, "you might need to have your birth control changed for lighter periods or more regular bleeding with less cramping" if you consistently experience these symptoms.
- Your mood is all over the place: Mood swings or feelings of anxiety or depression are worth speaking to your provider about.
- Your sex drive has changed: Birth control can sometimes cause your sex drive to plummet. Consider switching medications if this is a persistent issue for you.
- Your appetite has changed: "This is a very common side-effect; birth control is known to sometimes increase or decrease your appetite," Dr. Lue-Lai said.
- You're nauseous, dizzy, or even vomiting: These are considered extreme side effects and should definitely be addressed with your doctor.
- You're dealing with breast tenderness: Breast tenderness isn't completely uncommon with certain birth control, but severe pain can be a cause for concern.
- You're seeing acne where it wasn't before: Women who already prone to breakouts may experience severe acne with hormonal IUDs or contraception pills. If you're having excessive acne that's worsening, it might be time to change birth control.
- Your birth control may not be effective: To find out how effective your birth control is, Dr. Lue-Lai recommends checking out Bedsider.org, which is a great resource that allows you to weigh your options.
When starting a new birth control method, you should give yourself a two to three-month adjustment period before considering a switch. "Certain mild symptoms like acne, mood swings, or irregular spotting are not uncommon at the start," Dr. Lue-Lai said. "However, with birth control that contains only progesterone – Nexplanon, a Depo shot, or IUDs like Mirena, Skyla, or Liletta, for example – users may have irregular bleeding for several months before the symptoms improve."
Forgetting to take your birth control regularly can also affect your body's response. But if you're consistent and you're still experiencing ongoing symptoms or changes, you should definitely consult your provider.

I Quit Cardio For 30 Days, and the Results Were Unexpected - and So Good
I have a confession to make: I'm a cardio addict. As weird as it sounds, giving up alcohol for 30 days is easier for me than eliminating cardiovascular exercise for one month. Hear me out . . .
For as long as I can remember, my exercise regimen has always involved cardio. Always. From dancing as a toddler, to soccer in elementary and middle school, to running varsity cross country and playing varsity tennis in high school, to utilizing every elliptical and treadmill in my college gym, I've always been an active individual. For my mental sanity (read: clearing my head), if I was working out, there was one requirement: my heart rate would be elevated and beating at a rapid pace.
Fast forward to my postcollege life: these days, I participate in Tough Mudders, I run 5Ks, and I fangirl over my favorite cardio-based group fitness classes in New York City. I attend sweat sessions (almost) every day, like it's my job. (Well, as a fitness writer, it kind of is.)
After completing 30 straight days of treadmill-based workouts at Barry's Bootcamp earlier this year and maintaining the same weight from start to finish (and eating and drinking whatever I wanted - because, hello, hunger), my brain was tired, my body was a little fatigued, and my muscles (ahem, calves) were supertight. Because I'm equally starving and exhausted hours after running, cycling, swimming, and dancing, I wondered what life would be like if I gave up cardio. And so, for 30 days, I did.
Here's what I lost, learned, gained and changed - physically and mentally - in just one month.
The Workouts
Instead of jogging or spinning every morning, I opted for an exercise based on strength training, using weights or bodyweight exercises. SLT, aka Strengthen Lengthen Tone, is a 50-minute total-body workout using a Megaformer machine (a reformer-like contraption). In summary: SLT is Pilates but a million times more intense. With locations in six states and one conveniently less than a block from my apartment, I participated in class ever other day. Muscles that I didn't know existed were sore, mostly in my core. If I could have, I would have taken class every day for a month, but truthfully, my body needed to rest between workouts. Even though I was completing slow movements in counts of four, I was still breaking a sweat. After 15 classes, my limbs and abs felt stronger. On days I worked out, I felt great. On days I attempted to relax, I was slightly more restless.
The Recovery
Exercising frequently leaves my muscles a mess, and despite my love for fitness, yoga is not my strong suit. In order to make it through the month without doing downward dog 100 times a day, I visited a new space in NYC called STRETCH*D three to four times each week. For a half hour, my body was gently moved to loosen muscles, fix problem areas, and prevent injury using dynamic stretching methods. Checking in a few times each week made a huge difference. For one, I was far less sore than usual. And secondly, I left relaxed and mellow (and ready for nap time), which made for a considerable contrast to my usual fast-paced, anxiety-driven attitude on weekdays.
The Diet
I worked with Tovita Nutrition, a one-on-one virtual nutrition service, to figure out what foods were best for my body with my no-cardio agenda. Although, I have a profound love for ice cream and a strong liking for granola and protein bars, I (mostly) gave up both for 30 days. Through weekly FaceTime sessions and daily food logging, I became more aware of what I was eating, how much, and at what times during the day. To be perfectly honest, I didn't cut out any major food groups (ie: carbs). In fact, I ate more carbs (in nonprotein bar form, of course). And I felt better, actually. I wasn't trying to lose weight; I just wanted to feel energetic - and I did. Cutting out the added sugar made my mood more consistent throughout the days and weeks.
The Results
At the beginning of the month, I measured myself with a special InBody scale to track my change in weight, body fat, muscle, and more. In the end, I gained three pounds - but it was all muscle. My body fat percentage dropped from 19.5 percent to 18.8 percent. Translation: dropping cardio from my regimen helped me cut fat, without working out every day. In the end, I missed cardio a ton, so there's no doubt I'll pick it back up. However, next time I'm looking to lose body fat, I'll take a short break from my favorite cardio workouts, rather than a full month.
3 Resistance Band Arm Moves From the Trainer That Gets Victoria's Secret Angels Fit
P.Volve, the low-impact workout class created by trainer Stephen Pasterino (or "P" as his clients call him) that helped train the Victoria Secret's Angels for the 2017 fashion show, aims to get you a strong core and long, lean body through low-impact movements. "Smaller movements open up motion in your hips to firm the butt and slim the thigh," says P. "High-intensity is all about getting those results super fast by having you push your joints and muscles in a short amount of time - it doesn't really amount to anything."
The workout class, which I tried for the first time earlier this year, is working on a new way to tone your arms using those same small movements that got the Angels their firm and toned legs and a cool new tool P is calling, well, the P.Band ($30) - a resistance band and glove hybrid aimed at contouring the upper arm area.
The band has two fingerless gloves at both ends so it's secured around your fingers and wrists and you're free to concentrate on the program's curated moves - now integrated into the studio's signature classes - which sculpt the arm rather than add muscle to it. "If you want to gain muscle, that's where weights come in," P says. "If you're simply looking to carve the arm and tone it, you only need resistance."
As someone who has close to no upper body strength, the band is extremely appealing when compared to intimidating free weights. In barre or circuit classes, I feel myself burning out pretty quickly when using weights to work out my arms, and usually give up way before completing an entire rep. That wasn't the case with P.Band.
The band is easy to use and the moves that P guides you through are pretty simple, but not at all easy. Most of them involve keeping one or both arms completely straight and pulling your hands apart until you feel tension. Repeat the steps eight times on each side and you're pretty much good to go (and pretty exhausted). Ten minutes into the arm section and I was already working up a sweat.
No wonder the band has already gotten the stamp of approval from his clients like Blanca Padilla and Romee Strjid. "Arms are generally easy to tone if you stick to it in your regular workout," P told me. "You can start seeing a slimmer and more contoured arm in a matter of days."
If you can't make a class at P.Volve's New York City studio, no worries: P shared three of his favorite moves with us.
Nordstrom Sells Its Own Affordable Workout Leggings, and I Practically "Live In" Them
As a fitness editor, I'm always on the hunt for my next favorite pair of workout leggings. And currently, it's Zella's Live-In leggings from Nordstrom. If you're unfamiliar with the brand, Zella is one of Nordstrom's native brands including Caslon, BP., Halogen, and Treasure & Bond, and one of the best-selling brands in the Active department. During my days as a Nordstrom employee, I remember hearing customers raving about these signature leggings, but it wasn't until recently that I purchased a pair of my own. As soon as I put them on, I immediately regretted waiting so long to buy them.
To start, the original Live-In legging is incredibly comfortable and flattering. According to its product description, it "supports muscles, smooths curves, and optimizes range of motion," and I couldn't agree more. Its moisture-wicking fabric keeps me cool even during my most intense workouts, and is comfortable enough to lounge in, run errands in, and yes, live in (I'm even wearing them right now). I also love the hidden pocket in the waistband that's actually large enough to stash a credit card and keys.
My two personal favorites are the Live-In Midi (the perfect length for my 5'2" height) and the Live-In Lite (amazingly soft and stretchy).
On top of it being quality material and dryer-friendly, its affordable price is the true selling point. All Zella leggings range from $49 to $59 - quite the deal when you compare the price and quality with other athleisure brands. Most of its products also come in a wide range of sizes from XXS (00) to XXL (20).
Seriously, what's not to love? Take a look at Zella's many Live-In styles ahead!
I Stopped Taking Probiotics For 2 Weeks, and This is What Happened
To combat belly bloat, I have a few things in my arsenal, including drinking tons of water (close to a gallon a day), limiting my sugar and refined carb intake, getting my fill of fiber every day, and daily intermittent fasting. I also take probiotics every day, as recommended by my doctor who I saw when I was having extreme tummy issues about two years ago.
I pop one probiotic every day and have gotten into the habit of taking it with my lunch. I'm a fan of Ultimate Flora, either the 50 or 30 billion. I love that I can travel with them because they don't need to be refrigerated.
Why I Stopped For 2 Weeks
Combining all these things has helped me finally feel like I have control over preventing my belly bloat. It's an amazing feeling. Until one day, when I didn't feel so amazing. That's when I realized I hadn't taken a probiotic in two weeks. Why? It wasn't a glamorous reason - I ran out. I was getting ready for a trip and when I went to pack my probiotics, I realized I was down to my last pill, and I had forgotten to pick up a bottle.
What Happened?
When I got back from traveling for a few days, I actually felt fine, so I put off getting more. Maybe it was a waste of money, and I could save the $28 a month (that's $336 a year!) for something else (more fitness gear, please!). Maybe the other debloating techniques I was doing daily were enough.
After about seven days, my stomach started to feel off. I had been eating less healthy than usual with the warmer weather - lots of vegan ice cream, dinners out, s'mores by the campfire - so I just thought I felt crappy because of that. After a few days of cleaning up my diet, I actually didn't feel any better; I felt worse.
It had now been almost two weeks without taking probiotics, and every day I felt a little more bloated and gassy. By the end of two weeks, I was uncomfortably bloated and had a hard time sleeping because of gas pains. I was shocked. The only thing I had really changed was not taking probiotics, so could that be the reason? I hopped in my car and picked up a bottle to find out.
Now What?
After just five days of taking my beloved probiotics, I started to feel more like myself again. My belly was less puffy, it felt less gurgly, and my digestive system was - ahem - becoming more regular. I couldn't believe one tiny little pill had this much impact on how my belly felt.
For me, taking probiotics regularly definitely makes a huge difference. I aim to take them daily, but found that I'm OK if I skip three or four days - if I go any longer, my belly begins to suffer. Because I know now probiotics definitely do what they say they do, I always keep a new bottle on hand to avoid another unplanned probiotic break.
Burn Fat and Tone Your Body (Mostly Your Butt) With This CrossFit Workout
When I walked into my CrossFit box and saw this workout posted, I thought to myself, "This doesn't look so bad. Just running and some dumbbell moves." Famous last words. I should have remembered that the workouts that look the easiest on paper are usually the ones that destroy me. And I was right. I was floored by how only four exercises could work me so hard, leave me huffing and puffing, and my muscles burning. My ass was completely kicked in just 20 minutes!
My coach Jade Jenny, owner of Champlain Valley CrossFit gave us a little advice before tackling this workout. He said to either focus on using medium-weight dumbbells so you can really push your pace and do your reps unbroken, or use heavier dumbbells if you want to increase your strength. I used 15-pound dumbbells, and fell to the ground by the end that felt plenty hard enough for me.
The Workout
Directions: After warming up with five minutes of dynamic moves, complete the workout ahead, then take a one-minute rest. Repeat this five times.
21 dumbbell push press
100-meter run
15 dumbbell squats
100-meter run
9 dumbbell thrusters
100-meter run
For reference, it took me about 30 seconds to run the 100 meters, running at a moderate pace. You could certainly sprint to make this workout even harder.
Keep reading to learn details on how to do each of the dumbbell moves.

5 Sex Positions For When You're Tired - but Still Want to Get It On
I Planned My Wedding in Just 2 Months, and It Was the Best Decision
My 24th birthday will be one that I remember forever. It was the day my then-boyfriend popped the question. His proposal was perfect: he had taken me out to dinner at an elegant restaurant before bringing me back to the waterfront hotel and bar where we had met three years earlier. He ushered me into their largest suite where the candles had already been lit and a birthday cake sat waiting on the table surrounded by a pile of presents. Well, you guessed it. Inside one of those presents was my ring. I was in awe as he proceeded to get down on one knee and asked me to marry him.
Like any bride-to-be, I wanted to start planning immediately. We decided on a Fall wedding - early November when New England is at its most glorious - which gave us a solid 15 months to plan and save.
Exactly one month later, my dad was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer, and his prognosis was grim. Once the dust settled, we decided on a new date. The only thing was that it gave us just two months to pull everything together.
With only two months to plan, we didn't have the luxury of stressing over details or feeling cheated out of the things we had to sacrifice in order to make our wedding happen. Having to make sacrifices on your wedding day for the sake of time and budget sounds awful at first. After all, you only get to do this once, right? (At least that's what most starry-eyed brides hope for, anyway.) But in the end, we were forced to sit down and think about what really mattered. For us, it was having the people we loved there to share in our day. Then everything else just fell into place.
We were forced to sit down and think about what really mattered. For us, it was having the people we loved there to share in our day.
Both our church and venue, which normally hosts up to three weddings at a time, were completely open on the day we chose. Since it was only two months away, and the odds of anyone else coming along to book the venue were slim, they gave us their grand ballroom, something typically reserved for events with a minimum of 300 people (a far cry from our 100). And with Christmas less than three weeks away, the entire venue was already beautifully decorated. Once ordered, my gown came in earlier than expected and needed minimal alterations, and the photographer, DJ, and limo service were happy to have some business in their quiet season. In fact, everything went so smoothly that I still wonder why people actually feel the need to spend a year (or more) of their lives planning a party.
So what, exactly, did we sacrifice? Not much. Since it was so close to Christmas, we chose not to burden our friends with the responsibilities and costs associated with being in a bridal party. Instead, we had a maid of honor and a best man. And rather than invite every single person we've ever met, we kept it intimate with just our closest friends and family members. I didn't get the $1,500 bouquet I had originally envisioned, but that's OK because the simple roses that I carried dried nicely and now serve as a decoration on our mantle. Other than that, I can't think of a single thing that we missed having.
Ten years and three children later, there's a lot about my wedding day that I don't even remember. But I'll tell you what I do remember. I remember the look on my dad's face when he walked me down the aisle, and how we were both crying and laughing as we danced to the song he had chosen. I remember my new husband breaking it down on the dance floor to Michael Jackson (I had no idea he actually knew how to dance) and not being able to contain my laughter. I remember one hell of an after party at the hotel bar, complete with a live band, that continued on well into the night in the hallway of rooms that our family and friends occupied. So you see, the invitations, favors, flowers, and centerpieces are easily forgotten. In a couple of years, you won't remember the details of the party you worked so hard to plan. But you will remember the moments - especially if they're the last - you had with the people you love.
This Wedding's Cityscape Backdrop Was Almost as Gorgeous as the Bride's Twinkly Dress
When POPSUGAR editor Brinton Parker began planning her big day, we all knew it would be a celebration to remember. Her love of movie fandoms, sweet treats, and trendsetting beauty came together flawlessly when she tied the knot with her longtime partner, Christopher Botkin. The breathtaking ceremony took place on Treasure Island, San Francisco, with the cityscape as the background. Friends and family gathered to watch the pair say their vows - which included sweet Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings references, of course.
"I cried so. freakin'. much. on the wedding day, but I'd say that the most emotional moment for me was when Christopher began reading the vows that he wrote," Brinton said. "He's typically not an outspoken romantic, but every word of his vows was so heartfelt and personal that it made me choke up."
The reception followed at The Winery SF, where guests were treated to a visit from the Johnny Doughnuts truck and were surrounded by lush floral decor.
"My florist, Flower Girl Em, absolutely blew us out of the water," Brinton said. "We opted for scattered bud vases instead of centerpieces as a cost-saving move, but Emily went above and beyond everything I could have ever expected. She incorporated fruits like fresh oranges into the head table arrangement, every single piece - from boutonnieres to bouquets - was flawless. Her creativity astounds me and she's one of my favorite people to follow on Instagram!"
"Then, I'd say that our doughnut truck was a verrry close second favorite detail; who doesn't love carbs on wheels arriving halfway through a party? I've never gotten so many compliments about a dessert . . . several of the vegan guests said that their vegan options were the best doughnuts they've ever eaten."
The happy evening came to a close when guests hit the dance floor and took some snaps in the gold sparkly photo booth. You could feel the love everyone had for the newlyweds as they enjoyed one of those most important days of their lives.
"From the get-go, Christopher always told me that he didn't care how our wedding looked, as long as we got to celebrate with our loved ones and we walked away as husband and wife. If I had to guess his favorite moment, I would say it was tearing up the dance floor and partying with all of our friends and family - he danced so hard, he split his pants!"
And that's what we call a successful wedding.
