Visiting a Disney Park on a Hot Day? This Reusable Cooling Towel Will Be a Lifesaver
Here's a Disney tip for you: don't make the mistake of forgetting to check the weather before planning your visit to Disneyland (like I did). The fact that it was already 80 degrees out at 7 a.m. should've been the first sign to stay home, but we headed over to good ol' Anaheim despite the early heat. As soon as we entered the park, my sweaty boyfriend and I ran into the first gift shop on Main Street in search of any sort of cloth that would soak up the sweat on our faces. Once a cast member realized why we were so excited about a dish towel, she recommended a life-saving product that neither of us even knew existed: a cooling towel by Disney Parks ($17).
She explained that all you need to do is add water, wring it, and then snap it to activate a cooling effect that lasts for hours. It was reusable, machine washable, and exactly what we needed - except it was already sold out everywhere. We decided to just tough it out with our mini misting fan, staring at park-goers who were able to snag their own cooling towel with jealousy. The temperature eventually climbed to just below 100, but the one perk was that both Disneyland and California Adventure were empty.
On our way out of the parks, we stopped by Downtown Disney where we found the very last cooling towels outside of World of Disney. It was too late for us by that point, but we wished someone had told us about this product beforehand (you're welcome). Luckily, Walmart sells the exact same Disney Parks Mickey Mouse Cooling Towel for a steeper price point at $25. If I were you, I'd buy this far ahead of your own park visit.
10 Ways We Communicated as Kids Before We Had Cell Phones
When my daughter wants to know what her friends are wearing to a party, she can find out within mere seconds. All she has to do is send out a group text on her cell phone, and she's almost immediately reading her friends' responses. It's a fast-paced, technology-driven world our children's generation is living in.
I'm in my mid-30s, and back in my day, we didn't have cell phones. If I wanted to know what my friends were going to wear to a school dance, for example, I had to call each of them on their family's landlines. It was very time consuming, especially because I didn't have all of their phone numbers memorized, so I had to look up each one in my address book. While it's amazing to see how far we've come with communication and technology, there was such awesome simplicity in the precell phone time. Keep reading to take a trip down memory lane with some of the fun, weird, and pretty cool ways we communicated with our friends before cell phones.
This Easy-to-Clean Play Mat Was the Smartest Nursery Move I Made
I'm an anxious person. Not in the "Oh, I hope I don't miss my flight so I better get to the airport early" type of way, but in an actual medically diagnosed way. As a first-time mom-to-be, I knew it would be important to create a nursery that was not only pleasing to my child but also calming for me (and easy to clean). I'd be spending many middle-of-the-night hours in the baby's room, after all. I wanted to like the way the room made me feel. And not worry about the various messes happening inside of it.
Some of that would have to do with my own headspace, sure, but a lot would have to do with the decor. I was against gender-normative colors from the start, so we settled on the theme of monochromatic zoo (it sounds absurd every time I say it). I underestimated the power that a gray-toned compilation of elephants and octopuses would have over me. It put me in a zen state every time I went into the nursery, and our play mat, surprisingly, was the heart of this mental bliss.
Rather than getting a brightly colored option that I knew would aggravate me or a neutral-toned rug that would almost surely get ruined with spit-up and other unidentifiable newborn slop, we went with the Little Nomad Roam Free Play Mat ($99, originally $119). It not only warms up the room, but it's also nontoxic and a breeze to clean with soap and water. I've spilled hot coffee on it more than I want to admit, and I've left it sitting on the mat for hours before returning to clean it. The mat has never stained, which I'm so thankful for. One fewer thing to worry about!
Granted, the Little Nomad is significantly pricier than most mats (I could probably get a nine-piece set for under $20), but it's the trifecta of baby gear: it's soft, easy to wipe down, and chic. When people come over to visit and want to look at the nursery, they ignore the towering diaper pail and dirty clothes and just stare at the mat.
I know bright primary colors help with a baby's brain development and stimulation, but we have plenty of red, yellow, and blue toys to go around. The rug doesn't have to follow suit!
15 Things We Did as Kids During the Summer That Our Kids Will Never Experience
I loved being a '90s kid. I grew up with butterfly clips in my hair and jelly shoes on my feet. And I love to reminisce about the long, hot Summers from my childhood. I feel a little bad for my kids, because there are so many moments from my childhood Summers that they'll never get to experience. Everything is so busy these days, from strict Summer camp and activity schedules to group texts and screen time. I wish I could give them the kind of Summer I had - one with movie stores, walkie-talkies, and landlines. Keep reading for 15 nostalgic things that our little ones just don't get to experience anymore.
Babies Dress as Disney Princesses For Birthday Cake Smash - and the Photos Will Make Your Mouth Drop
If your love of Disney princesses is only rivaled by your adoration of babies, you probably recall that viral photo of six newborns swaddled up as Disney's most classic princesses. Well, it's been a year since that magical image made the rounds on the internet, and in celebration of their first birthdays, the same photographer has gathered up the girls for a reunion . . . and a fairy-tale cake smash!
Karen Marie, who owns Belly Beautiful Portraits, once again turned the kiddos into Ariel, Snow White, Aurora, Cinderella, Belle, and Jasmine. Each one was photographed in an elaborate backdrop reflective of the character's story with custom, handmade costumes created by Sew Trendy Accessories. And after the immaculate portraits were complete, she let the kiddos dig into a multitiered birthday cake, complete with a tiara topper.
The result is every bit as beautiful as the last photo shoot, and it's the happiest of happy endings to the first year of these babies' lives. May they all live happily ever after!
Read on to see close-up shots of the little Disney princesses alongside the original shots of them as newborns.
The 1 Bizarre Parenting Fear John Stamos Had Because of Full House
You'd think starring on a family-friendly show like Full House for eight years would prepare Uncle Jesse for parenthood, but even John Stamos admits that portraying father figures for most of his career has its drawbacks.
In fact, being a sitcom dad gave him a very surprising real-life parenting fear when he and his wife Caitlin McHugh welcomed their first child, Billy, in April.
"You think you know how it's going to be because I've been on TV with babies forever," Stamos told Entertainment Tonight. "But, and I'm not even making a joke out of this, I have a fear of handing the baby back. Like someone's going to yell, 'Cut!' and they are going to take my kid away from me."
Thankfully, Billy is all his: "That's the great thing, when nobody comes in and, you know, takes him."
We're Cheering For This Overnight Manager at Starbucks Who Helped 1 Mom Give Birth Outside
Rashelle Rehms, the overnight manager at a 24-hour Starbucks in Tacoma, WA, and a mom of two, certainly had an action-packed shift on July 7. The ruckus started when a homeless man started banging on the store's glass door around 1 a.m., screaming that a woman sprawled out on a nearby patch of grass was in labor.
Without giving it a second thought, Rashelle grabbed some towels from the store and rushed to the stranger's side. She told Inside Edition that the soon-to-be mom was in a full-fledged panic and asked if Rashelle would help her take her pants off.
Rashelle sprung into action just in time to welcome the new bundle of joy into the world. The baby girl "just came out into my arms," she said, adding that, "All I really had to do was catch her."
Although there were definitely some frightening moments - like when the umbilical cord snapped during the delivery - Rashelle tried her best to keep the new mother calm until the paramedics came.
"Those are slippery when they come out," said Rashelle. "I was just thinking, 'Oh my gosh, don't drop her. That's all you have to do. Don't drop her.'"
When all was said and done, mom and daughter were taken to the hospital to recover - and Rashelle was down an apron. "I did have to sacrifice my apron," she explained. "I looked down at it and said, 'I can't wear that back to work.'"
The only thing left to do? Break the news to her boss when she walked in the door at 4 a.m., of course.
Rashelle confessed that she broke a rule to her manager, saying, "I broke a rule and it's a big one. But I delivered a baby . . . I'm sure you're going to hear all about it. But I wanted you to hear it from me first."
While her boss was obviously stunned by the news, Rashelle didn't get into any trouble for helping out a stranger in need.
And apparently the folks over at Starbucks' corporate headquarters was pretty impressed, too. Starbucks released a statement saying, "We're proud of our partner for her quick thinking and response until additional help could arrive, and appreciate their quick response as well."
These Barefaced Celebrity Selfies Have Everyone Talking - in the Best Way

So, if you need a little pick-me-up, keep reading to see the most empowering no makeup selfies in recent memory. It doesn't hurt that each one is pretty damn gorgeous to boot.
The Sneaky Way Your Birth Control Could be Harming Your Skin
While birth control pills are sometimes prescribed by doctors to help regulate acne, in some cases, it can make the problem worse. To understand why that might be, it's important to know how the pill works in your body. Most birth control pills contain a mix of hormones and work by preventing a woman's body from releasing an egg, eliminating the possibility of fertilization.
Pills that are high in androgen (aka testosterone, the male sex hormone) can increase acne breakouts and body hair growth in some women. The good news is that many birth control pills can actually improve your skin. According to Dr. Lamees Hamdan, MD, birth control pills that contain both progesterone and estrogen have the opposite effect. "These pills actually decrease the amount of androgen in your body, which can prevent excess sebum," she said. "The less sebum that is produced, the less of a chance it has to combine with bacteria and dead cells from the skin and cause a pimple."
If you think your birth control has made your acne worse, consider asking for a switch to a low-androgen variety.

This Is the Best Way to Get Rid of Toe Hair, According to a Dermatologist
Nothing should stop you from busting out your favorite pair of sandals on a sweltering day. But if you'd rather not parade your toe hair all over town, you may feel uncomfortable at the thought of a buying those cork mules you've been obsessing over. Of course, you have no obligation to remove your foot fuzz - full disclosure, the author of this post gives zero f*cks about her own. But just in case you do, we enlisted the help of two experts to reveal the best way to get hair the hell off of your toes - and surprisingly, this preferred method does not involve a razor.
"Most of the skin on your body has hair follicles."
"Hair on the dorsal toes is perfectly normal, although commonly unwanted," said Dr. Nava Greenfield of NYC's Schweiger Dermatology Group. "Most of the skin on your body has hair follicles." Your fur can be beneficial - it regulates sweat production and body temperature, while adding an extra layer of skin protection. Your own personal hormones play a large role in how much hair you have, along with the size and thickness of strands. According to Dr. Greenfield, "The most effective way to permanently remove unwanted hair is laser hair removal."
If you're ready to zap those suckers off, you should know a few things before you book a laser appointment. According to Ari Marom, founder of NY Laser Outlet, the procedure "works on most hair colors except blonde, red, and gray hair." This is because the energy from a laser is less able to be absorbed on lighter colored pigments. That said, laser can be used on all skin types, as long as you discuss any existing conditions with your doctor first.
To keep your toes completely hair-less via laser, you'll need to book six treatments every four to eight weeks to start. After that, you'll probably need to go in for maintenance or touch-ups once or twice a year, depending on your hair's texture. Make sure to shave one day before your treatment.
If you're trying laser because you want to show off your feet in sandals during a sunny Summer getaway, be sure to plan ahead. Marom said that for any laser treatment, it's important to avoid the sun for two weeks before and after your treatment, as the procedure makes your skin more susceptible to burning and scarring.
Kim Kardashian West is Clearing the Air About North's Straight Hair Once and For All
For every one rumor circulating the internet about a celebrity, there is something like 4,982 more about Kim Kardashian West - and that is exactly how she likes it. The business mogul, beauty entrepreneur, and mother of three has built a $350-million empire on keeping people talking, be it through her countless YouTube tutorials, Snapchat videos, the Kimoji app, and a little-known E! reality TV show.
Still, there are a few things Kardashian West would like to clear up. "I'm really well aware of things, especially if they involve my children," she told POPSUGAR, referencing the recent controversy on her daughter North's straight hair. "I saw some ridiculous things that people said, like that I put extensions in her hair or permanently straightened it. That's not true at all. It was like a 5-minute process, where I put her hair in a ponytail and used a flatiron. I would never want to damage her hair, so it's not like I'm going to do it weekly. But it was for her birthday, and she asked for straight hair, so if that's what she wants to do one to two times a year, then I'm fine with that."
I've been wearing my hair wavy and curly recently, and she'll be like, 'Mom, you look like Moana!' She loves that because Moana kind of looks like her and has similar hair to her.
For the star - and really, the entire Kardashian-Jenner family - beauty is all about having fun, but that doesn't mean she's not deliberate in the choices she's making. "Kids are very observant, so [North] knows that everyone has different hair textures and types," she said. "Her best friends are mixed like her, and she sees all different hair types like with her cousins on Kanye's side and her cousins on my side. She's not at the age yet where she's asking, but I've been wearing my hair wavy and curly recently, and she'll comment and be like, 'Mom, you look like Moana!' She loves that because Moana kind of looks like her and has similar hair to her."
For more intel on what Kardashian West really thinks about kids playing with makeup, motherhood, and those hilarious perfume mailers she sends, keep reading - and try to keep up.
On Passing on Her Love of Beauty
There are a hell of a lot of zeroes to track when it comes to sales from Kardashian West's beauty endeavors, so it makes sense, then, that a love for cosmetics is in the genes. "My daughter isn't wearing makeup as part of her routine or to feel good about herself - she's at home putting makeup on her dolls and doing it to dress up like a princess," she said. "I see nothing wrong with that. There are makeup camps where they teach kids how to create makeup and little kits you can buy, because it's just fun. My daughter, for example, got a how to make bath bombs [set] for her birthday - it's like the how to make slime. It's just a fun activity we can do together."
How She Finds "Me" Time as a Mom
As she continues to grow her family, Kardashian West makes it a point to set aside time for self-care. "You have to schedule that time for yourself," she said. "My workouts every morning have become that for me. It's when I can get focused for the day and regroup. I'll wake up at 5:45 a.m., work out from 6 to 7, get the kids up at 7:15 am., and we're out the door by 8:30 - it's a whole routine. Things are always changing, but that's been working for me lately."
Relishing the Reactions to Her Fragrances
Sometimes I watch them for the first time on Snapchat or Instagram Stories, just like everyone else.
While she says she can't always keep up with the casual 59 million followers-worth of responses she gets on Twitter, Kardashian West does live for the reactions she gets from friends and family whenever she sends over a new perfume. "I never run anything by my sisters with my fragrances, so nobody sees the bottles, my press pack, or anything else until they receive it at their house," she laughs, adding that she sometimes makes one special accommodation. "Kylie [Jenner] is a big KKW Fragrance fan - it's all she wears as her perfume - so I had to make a note [for the package featuring her three new KIMOJI Fragrances] that's like, Okay we have to send Kylie one of every scent. It makes me so happy to see people's reactions. Sometimes I watch them for the first time on Snapchat or Instagram Stories, just like everyone else. So I'll send them, and then I wait for the response, which is so fun."
KIMOJI Peach, Cherry, and Vibes Fragrances ($45 each) will be available July 17 on the KKW Beauty website.
The Surprising Facial That Instantly Cured My Headaches
Not much was going through my mind (other than my to-do list for the rest of the day), when I went for a facial with celebrity facialist Antonia Burrell a few weeks ago. I expected to come out relaxed, but I could have never prepared for what else happened: it cured the terrible tension headaches that have plagued me for years.
I get headaches every single night right before I go to sleep, and I've tried everything to get rid of them. My most recent solution was the trusty Slip Sleep Mask, but when that stopped working, I ended up having real issues when it came to getting some beauty rest. That is, until I tried a cupping facial. I've not had a single headache since.
I've used the cups on my forehead every other night before bed, and I haven't had a single headache since.
If you're unfamiliar, cupping is a technique that uses small, flexible silicone cups. But unlike the suction technique used on athletes, the facial treatment incorporates face oil and massage. The cups are pressed onto the lubricated skin, then glided across it in specific motions to stimulate circulation and encourage blood flow. I knew a bit about the popular facial and had even used the technique at home a few times, but I focused on my cheeks and jawline to enhance a natural contour rather than focus on any tension areas. When I visited Burrell for the facial, she worked on the top half of my face, and I instantly felt an intense sensation on the tension points in my forehead. This was when I realized how bad it was. Even though it hurt, she worked out the tension throughout the treatment, and suddenly something clicked: will this help my headaches?
"Cupping activates drainage of the lymph nodes and helps unblock sinuses, relieving swelling and discomfort, as well as relaxing muscular tension and tightness from the face, neck, and décolletage," Burrell told me at the time. It made so much sense. I can't believe I'd never thought of it before.
It's not just headaches that facial cupping can help with, either, but also teeth grinding. "Facial cupping can help relax these rigid muscles and improve circulation, so by concentrating the cupping technique on your jaw, you can help ease any stress, pain, and tightness in this area," she said.
Plus, if you want to maintain the results at home, Burrell created the facial in a box. She recommends using the cups on your forehead, cheekbones, and base of neck to relax your muscles, which can help relieve headaches. Doing this two to three times a week, she says, will give maximum results.
Ever since this facial, I've used the cups on my forehead every other night before bed, and I haven't had a single headache before sleeping since. Of course, everyone's headaches are different, and you should always consult your doctor for your pain relief options, so this isn't to say cupping facials is a universal cure-all. But if you're suffering from tension headaches, it certainly doesn't (have to) hurt.

The Cooling After-Sun Lotion You Need When You're Feeling the Burn
Wearing sunscreen year-round is a cardinal beauty rule, and I apply it diligently every morning. (I don't even like to sit in the sun too long because I know how harmful UV rays can be.) But even I - the girl you'll always find under the umbrella - can miss a spot or two, and that's exactly what happened two weeks ago.
After just an hour in the sun, my left shoulder was charred to a bright red crisp. I promptly freaked out and ran to my friend's medicine cabinet to grab this Sun Bum Cool Down Hydrating After Sun Lotion ($11). It smelled like a really delicious coconut, which was nice, and frankly, I was desperate. But its aftereffects surprised even me: not only did the hypoallergenic, cruelty-free, and vegan formula moisturize my skin, but it also took the burn all the way down. In fact, I woke up the next morning without a patch or peel in sight. It's so good, I might even make it my everyday body moisturizer.
Bottom line: sunburns can sneak up on you, and nobody should be without this calming lotion.
Cover FX's Foundations Were Already Inclusive - but Its New Concealers Are Next Level
Cover FX has been a longtime leader in the base makeup department, with high-quality foundations and even more impressive shade ranges. In February Power Play Foundation, a 40-shade line of full-coverage options. Now, the brand is expanding its beloved Power Play family with 30 new concealer shades.
The new Power Play Concealer features the same long-wearing, full-coverage formula as the foundation, so if you're a fan of the latter, this will be your jam. We found that while the consistency is rich and creamy, it's also super lightweight, and unlike other full-coverage products, your under eye area will never look cake-y.
Like all Cover FX products, the concealer shades are grouped by undertone (including G+ for olive complexions) so you can find the shade closest to your natural skin tone. It also comes with a cool ball-like sponge applicator that makes getting those hard-to-reach areas, like the sides of your nose, easy AF. According to the brand's makeup artist amd global partnerNick Scalzo, though, you can really apply it anywhere. "I love using this to create a natural highlight on the skin," he said."Just go one to two shades darker and apply it along the high points of your face and blend."Since the concealer dries down to a skin-like finish, you can use it on your face to cover any redness or blemishes.
You can snag the new concealer when it launches in late July at coverfx.com, but take a peek at the full range ahead in the meantime.
The US Navy's New Policy on Natural Hair Is a Long Overdue “Step Forward”
Contrary to its past policy, the US Navy has announced that black women in service can now wear their natural hair, AP News reported. More specifically, it was revealed during a public all-hands broadcast on Facebook that servicewomen are now able to wear locs, various twists, and ponytails, as well as wider buns, to work.
This comes after years of requests from women prompting the Navy to adjust its strict guidelines, which restricted the available options women of color could wear, to be more inclusive. Capt. Thurraya Kent, a senior member of the working group that recommended the changes, has been challenging these rules throughout her 26-year career. She recalled being told to remove certain hairstyles, such as braids, describing it to the AP News as a "very embarrassing moment."
Legalman First Class Tamatha Schulmerich said that putting the new rules in place "is a step forward," and that the military is updating guidelines that "maybe no longer serve their purpose in today's society, today's military." Lt. Cmdr. Jess Cameron also commented on the topic saying, "Allowing new hairdos may seem like a small thing, [but] it sends a larger message."
The All-Time Favorite Fragrances Our Editors Can’t Live Without
You may not have known it when the eager scent peddlers were spritzing you in clouds of perfume with names like Sweet Sunshine and A Woman's Desire, but there can be an upside to surviving the telltale department store fragrance counter experience: when you discover one you love - it could be with you forever.
That said, much like finding the perfect fitted jeans or the right dermatologist, finding a signature scent can take years of trial and error. So, to streamline the process - and because the human nose can only handle so many sandalwood varietals - we asked POPSUGAR beauty editors to share the classic fragrances they'll continue to buy time and time again. Call it the light at the end of that perfume tunnel.

Not only were they wearing similar high-waisted pants in the same day, Emma also channeled Meghan's style circa 2016, when she wore her own all-white Ralph Lauren outfit to the event. Selena Gomez's T-Shirt Sends a Powerful Message at Just the Right Point in Time
Celebrities love to keep us guessing when it comes to their personal lives, but sometimes they drop subtle hints to let the world know what they're thinking. Case in point? Selena Gomez. While Selena's Storets shirt looks simple at first, you'll notice that there's actually a secret message written on it.
Selena showed off her new extensions wearing a pair of gray sweatpants and a black tee that had the message, "Only the Strong Survive" written on it. The singer's shirt is reminiscent of other slogan apparel she's worn before, which she's been spotted in on multiple occasions.
While we don't know if she chose this particular message at a weighty point in time - her ex, Justin Bieber, just got engaged to Hailey Baldwin, JIC you didn't know - we applaud her putting on a display of girl power, nevertheless. Keep reading to get a closer look, and shop similar versions of her empowering tee ahead.
Holy Moly! You'll Instantly Fall in Love With This Designer's MASSIVE Engagement Ring
You may not know who Danielle Snyder is but you'll remember her after taking one look at her stunning engagement ring. We've been following Danielle for a while now because of her NY-based jewelry brand, Dannijo, so it's an understatement to say that she has great style. The designer gave us major FOMO as she 'grammed pictures of her picture-perfect Greece vacation with boyfriend Brandon Shorenstein. During their romantic trip, Brandon actually got down on one knee, making this trip truly one Danielle will never forget.

This Weighted Blanket Is "Like Advil PM For Your Whole Body"
Anxiety and insomnia are common problems these days, and while you could treat these issues by taking one of the many of drugs on the market, you can also try wrapping yourself in a weighted blanket. The deep pressure these blankets produce is akin to being embraced in a hug, which is said to stimulate the production of serotonin and endorphins, two naturally calming chemicals in the body. As a result, you'll fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. Sounds incredible, right? There are a handful of weighted blankets on the market already (including the Swadl, Mosaic, SensaCalm, and BlanQuil), but a brand called Gravity has one of the most innovative and luxurious weighted blanket models out there.
"Taking design cues from renderings of gravity planes, we used the same grid-like pattern to evenly distribute the crafted poly pellets to specifically target pressure points throughout your body," the company said. To achieve the perfect seven to 12 percent bodyweight to blanket weight ratio, it's offering three different pound options made from nontoxic, food grade filling - 15-pound, 20-pound, and 25-pound - all retailing for $249. The Best Way to Grill Asparagus
Before I learned this method, my grilled asparagus always ended up stringy, charred, and shriveled. I had all but given up hope that it could ever taste good, unless wrapped in bacon. However, while at a dinner party, I learned a new way of cooking it that is foolproof.
- Buy thick, hearty stalks of asparagus. These are less likely to fall through grill grates. Prep the asparagus by snapping off the woody ends and then peeling the stalk skin.
- Lightly coat the asparagus in a neutral-tasting, high-heat oil, using your hands to evenly coat each stalk.
- In a medium-high grill, place the asparagus stalks perpendicular to the grill grates. Close the top and allow the asparagus to cook/steam for approximately 30 seconds. Open the grill top, use tongs to flip toss the asparagus around, close the top, and cook for another 30 seconds.
- Remove from the grill and salt and pepper to taste.
That's it! You can try leaving the asparagus on longer, if you prefer grill marks, but you will find this quick method cooks the asparagus through while maintaining a slight crunch.
The Right Way to Grill Hot Dogs and Sausages
Grilling hot dogs and sausages might seem like a culinary task so simple that instructions aren't necessary. In many ways it is (easy, that is), but to do it right requires a pinch of know-how. The key thing to know is that both of these Summer cookout staples are temperature-sensitive and prone to splitting and drying out. Instead of throwing them straight on a smoking-hot grill, follow one of these two methods:
- Simmer then grill: Parcook the sausages prior to grilling by simmering them in water (or beer!) until heated through, about five minutes. Once hot, grill each side for a couple minutes over medium-high heat, until golden brown.
- Grill very carefully: Build a two-level fire in your grill (meaning medium-high heat on one side, no flame on the other). Cook the sausages on the cool side, flipping occasionally, until warm. Once warmed through, grill each side for a couple minutes over medium-high heat, until golden brown.
How I Turned My Ikea Couch Into an $11,000 Designer Sofa
I don't believe you grow out of Ikea past the age of 25. I love the Swedish brand's minimalist aesthetic. And since I like to mix things up, the price point works for a design commitment-phobe like me. Despite my Ikea love, after three years, my Karlstad sofa started to look a bit sad. Since the low-profile sofa fit perfectly in my open living room, I decided to give it a designer-couch makeover instead of replacing it.
This Raleigh Sectional from Design Within Reach (pictured above) served as my inspiration. The walnut frame matched the midcentury vibe I strive for, and the light fabric color would add to the airy look in my bright living space. That sofa retails for as much as $11,000. I knew I could DIY the look for less. Read on for how I did it.
Tyler Florence's Hack Will Forever Change the Way You Make Mashed Potatoes
Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Nicole Perry
Food Network chef Tyler Florence shared his mashed potatoes recipe with us, and I immediately had to try it. Traditionally, potatoes are cooked in water before being mashed together with butter and cream (or milk). However, Tyler suggests cooking the potatoes in the cream itself, so no potato-y flavor is lost. He explains, "Potatoes have a really delicate, beautiful minerality to their flavor profile, and when you cook potatoes in water and you pour that water down the drain, you've extracted all the flavor of the potato. So what I do with mashed potatoes - because you finish them with cream and butter anyway, right? - is I'll take that same cream and butter and add that to the potatoes and cook the potatoes in cream and butter." Would that actually work? Would it actually taste good? I had to find out.

As Tyler instructed, I added "cold, peeled, chopped potatoes, cream, butter, and olive oil" to a pan. He also told us, "I like garlic. I like sage and rosemary flavor combinations, and a little bit of thyme." To my pot of 3 pounds of potatoes, I added enough half and half to just barely cover the potatoes. Frankly, I was scared about using straight cream, which is why I deviated slightly from his instruction. I then added about 3 tablespoons of salted butter and 3 tablespoons of olive oil. I added a few cloves of peeled garlic and half a bunch each of sage, rosemary, and thyme. I also included a significant amount of salt (at least a teaspoon) so the potatoes could absorb some of the flavor while cooking. I covered the pot and allowed it to simmer on medium until the potatoes became fork tender, about 20 minutes. The aroma in my kitchen was unbelievable.

Here's what Tyler told us to do next: "When the potatoes are tender, I put a bowl on the counter and a colander inside that bowl. I pour the potatoes through the colander, and the cream will collect on the bottom. Then I'll put the potatoes back into the pot and take the potato-infused garlic cream and fold that back into the potatoes, and it's the most incredible flavor profile. It's the best mashed potato you'll ever taste in your entire life." And so, I did just that. I drained the potatoes, collecting the rich liquid while discarding the herb stems. I then mashed the potatoes, adding back in the liquid until I created velvety smooth mashed potatoes with little specks of garlic and herbs. I salted and peppered to taste and served up with my lemon-garlic-parsley roast turkey and gravy. These mashed potatoes are pure heaven. I can now agree with Tyler's affirmation; they really are the best mashed potatoes I've ever tasted in my entire life. And even though I was scared it would be a huge flop, I'm never going back to any other method again.

5 Steps to Pizza-Grilling Success
Of the less-than-conventional foods to throw on the grill, my favorite is probably pizza. I love a luscious, melted pie in any form, but there's something about the crunch and char of the crust from the grill that makes barbecued pizza irresistible. Thinking of throwing a pizza on your grates for the first time? Here are a few tips for grilled pizza pizzazz.
1. Make sure your grill is hot!
When it comes to pizza crust, the higher the temperature of your grill, the more blistery, chewy, and crispy your pizza will be. If you don't have a thermometer on your grill, then check the heat using the "Mississippi" test: hold your hand three inches over the grill grates, and start counting, "One Mississippi, two Mississippi, three Mississippi," and so on. If you can only count to two or three before the force of the heat makes you pull back your hands, then you know you've got your grill at 600ºF or higher.
2. Know the basics.
Brush your dough with oil. Then, once you've hand-stretched it or rolled it out, gently drape the dough over the hot grates. Cook until the dough puffs and grill marks begin to appear underneath, about one to two minutes. Using tongs, flip the dough over, then cook until the other side is slightly charred, another couple minutes. Then add your cheese and cooked toppings, close the cover, and allow everything to meld and the cheese to become oozy (this will take several minutes).
3. Take advantage of the grill-oven hybrid method.
If you're adding toppings that require cooking time, or if you've got limited grill space and time, then try starting the dough on the grill, add your toppings, and then finish the whole thing in a preheated oven. This works especially well with toppings such as raw sausage in a hot sausage, pepper, and onion pizza.
4. Make sure your pizza's thin - but don't worry if it isn't the prettiest.
A superthick crust will mean the possibility of an undercooked, doughy pizza. Roll or stretch your pizza dough out to no thicker than 1/8 of an inch. That said, don't worry if your pizza's not a perfectly rectangular or round shape. The more uneven and rustic, the better.
5. Close the lid when your pizza's on the grill - always.
It's the only way to trap in the smoky flavors of the grill, and it's also the surest way to make sure your cheese melts.

5 Methods For Grilling Fish That Will Earn You the Title "Grill Master of Summer"
From hot dogs to halloumi and wild leeks to watermelon, just about every provision can be made more delicious on the grill. My recent obsession is fish; a short trip to the grill takes its delicate flavor profile for a wild ride, imparting a char and an intoxicatingly smoky aroma that can't be replicated. Another reason to love fish on the 'cue: the versatile protein also works well in an extensive range of preparations. Here are five of my favorite methods:
- Grill it whole. If you're new to grilling seafood, it doesn't get much easier than grilling a whole fish. Anoint it with oil, sprinkle it with salt, and toss it on the grill. Once cooked, all it needs is a sprinkling (if that) of herbs and a squeeze of lemon.
- Grill a bunch of smaller, sustainable fish. Yes, that'd be heads, tails, and all. Serve it simply with flaky Maldon sea salt and lemon juice. Here's a step-by-step for how to do it the Spanish way.
- Shape patties for burgers. Pulse a firm-fleshed, meaty fish (such as salmon or tuna) in a food processor, then season it with salt and pepper. Pack the ground fish into a mold, then grill it until it's cooked through and serve it between burger buns.
- Grill the fish in a packet. This method will yield similar effects to the healthy French en papillote preparation, except you'll want to wrap the fish in foil rather than parchment packets to prevent burning.
- Use a cedar plank. Cooking on a cedar plank will impart even more dimension to the flavor of grilled fish. Purchase inexpensive, aromatic cedar planks, presoak them to avoid smoking, then cook the fish over a closed grill for extra earthiness.
