I Thought I'd Never Be Able to Run Again - and Then I Tried These Sneakers

When my podiatrist told me I had plantar fasciitis, I was absolutely heartbroken. Running is not just my morning jolt or something I do to stay healthy, it keeps me mentally sane. On days I don't run, I swear my character is affected. You wouldn't want to meet me on a day I didn't run, because I would probably have resting b*tch face.

The next few months were extremely hard for me, and maybe I approached them in the wrong way. Instead of immediately trying physical therapy or making an appointment with a doctor who treated more aggressively, I sulked around in a walking boot (which was just meant to soften the pain) and took up swimming, which I wasn't superfond of.

I didn't end up with plantar fasciitis because I was running too much but because I have a terribly weak right hip, causing my entire leg to drop with each step. I learned this later when I did finally start working with PT specialists who were extremely dedicated to helping me solve my problem and promised me I'd get on the road again.

If you're hurt, one way to stay optimistic is to remind yourself that the body heals itself. It might take awhile, but your pain will not be forever. Nevertheless, you must also be proactive: never end a workout without stretching properly, apply ice and heat to your injuries instead of ignoring them, and, most importantly, research the products you're wearing!

After running in Brooks for years (which is a great shoe, don't get me wrong), I assessed my own problem and realized that in order for my legs to feel light and for me to keep my body balanced on both sides, I had to find a sneaker that was almost completely weightless with a chunky sole, but one that wasn't heavy. Enter HOKA One One.

My first pair was the 2017 Clayton in this exact colorway, which has been discontinued, but replaced with the Clayton 2. I've now moved on to the brand new Clifton 5, which truly makes me feel like I'm running on marshmallows. These sneakers aren't the complete solution, as I mentioned before, but I recommend them wholeheartedly if you've ever felt sluggish or as though you're "dragging" through your route.

Let me show you my favorite styles - both because of structure and, yes, the ridiculously awesome and fun shades - and when you try them, I promise you'll be flying. I'll meet you in the clouds, because you better believe I got my stride back.

5 Changes I Made in My Life to Lose Face Fat and Get Healthy

When I was overweight and unhealthy, there were a lot of things I wanted to change. First and foremost, I wanted to have more energy and feel more like myself so I could go about my life like I used to. But I also wanted to fit into my clothes again, as well as reduce the extra weight that had been added to my face and neck area.

Getting rid of face fat may sound great for someone who wants to lose weight, but the sad truth is, you can't spot-reduce fat anywhere on your body, including (and especially) your face. However, it is possible! You just have to lose weight everywhere so that your hard work eventually reaches your face. These are the five things I did to lose face fat, and feel more confident and healthier than ever.

Yes, Stress Can Kill - Here's How It Affects Your Body If It Goes Unmanaged For Too Long

Many of us have learned to simply accept stress as a normal part of the daily grind. It's almost even become a way we gauge one's work ethic; if you're not stressed, you're probably not doing enough. But as much as it's been ingrained in American culture that stress equates to success, the consequences can truly be life-threatening the longer it goes ignored. To find out how exactly stress can kill, we spoke with Athena Robinson, PhD, clinical psychologist, and chief clinical officer of therapy chatbot and app Woebot.

First, let's define the term. "Stress can be loosely defined as pressure or tension that one can feel emotionally and physically as a result of a situation or their interpretation about a situation," Dr. Robinson told POPSUGAR. And like all emotions, stress can tell us information, whether a deadline is coming down to the wire or you're late to your dinner reservation. In these cases, stress can actually be beneficial as it gives us an adrenaline rush and motivates us to get things done. But here's when it becomes a real issue.

"The trouble comes when someone feels high levels of stress on a chronic basis, especially regarding situations over which they have little or no control," Dr. Robinson said. On a psychological level, being overstressed can lead to conditions like depression, anxiety, and sleep problems. It can also impact your physical health by exacerbating chronic pain and increasing headaches, she explained. When you continue to have high levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, Dr. Robinson said it can result in more severe consequences: decreased immune function and bone density, impaired learning and memory, and increased blood pressure. "The rumors are true . . . chronic stress can indeed lead to medical complications such as increased risk of coronary heart disease events and related mortality."

The good news is that the consequences of chronic stress can be reversed if caught in time. Depression, anxiety, and sleep problems can be improved with stress reduction techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness programs, and exercise. However, a physical side effect as severe as a stroke, for example, isn't reversible.

"Nonetheless, now is always a good time to learn how to manage stress if you are in need," she said. "Implementing helpful strategies sooner rather than later may help mitigate the number and severity of consequences you experience later in life."

If you experience the following stress signals, seek ways to effectively manage your stress immediately:

  • Increased heart rate
  • Sweating
  • Pressure in chest
  • Shallow breathing
  • Increased body temperature
  • Low energy
  • Clammy hands
  • Feeling down or depressed
  • Repetitive thoughts about one topic
  • Feeling hopeless
  • Increased irritability or short temperedness
  • Increased substance use

This Is What You Need to Know If You've Never Lifted Weights Before

Does weightlifting feel like a foreign style of training to you? If so, that's completely understandable. Learning a new skill - cooking, a language, or fitness - requires a lot of practice. As a trainer, I've helped many people go from being sedentary to lifting weights multiple times a week. I've laid out a general plan that will help you learn how to move correctly without weight, in order to prevent injuries when you do advance to incorporating weights. Get ready to cross off "learn how to lifts weights" from your list of fitness goals with these three simple weightlifting tips.

Start With Bodyweight Exercises

It can be tempting to jump into lifting heavy weights, attempting moves like dumbbell power cleans from the get-go. I don't advise this because you'll be putting yourself at risk for injury. Instead, I suggest learning how to efficiently move your own bodyweight first. Training with just your bodyweight can highlight any muscular imbalances you may have and help you correct them. You'll also learn proper movement patterns and you'll build a foundation of strength. Get started with these exercises:

Once you are comfortable with bodyweight exercises like push-ups, planks, and lunges, advance to learning basic strength training movements with weight.

Learn the Basic Movements

Once you've gotten bodyweight exercises down, it's time to start incorporating using light weights with exercises. If you aren't comfortable going straight to using a barbell and dumbbells, you can utilize various machines in the gym. A progression of this would look like: learning how to do an air squat, then learning how to do smith machine squats, and finally, dumbbell/barbell squats. The basics movements I recommend you learn first are:

Once these moves become second nature, you can continue to progress to more advanced moves like deadlifts and hip thrusts.

Put Your New Skills to Work

Practice makes perfect, especially when it comes to lifting weights. You're going to need to practice these moves often, preferably with the supervision of an experienced trainer. From there you can begin to focus on compound exercises (multiple muscle groups being worked at once) like the squat and press to get the most out of your workout.

If you're new to strength training, I recommend doing three strength training sessions a week. This will give your body ample time to recover and adapt to this new style of training. When it comes to programming, I constantly change the focus and style of each session to create muscle confusion and prevent a plateau. One session may specifically target the lower body, other days may focus on chest and back, and some days will be conditioning (non-stop activity for the entire session). If you aren't sure how to create your own program, this four-week beginner plan is a great resource.

In a Keto Rut? Here Are the 5 Best Places to Get Those Essential Fats

The Keto Diet is one filled with healthy fats - fats that our body uses as nourishment. So, don't let the word "fat" mislead you. If you're thinking about taking on the keto diet, you won't be able to drive through McDonald's to pick up a McFlurry or cheeseburger. Instead, you'll devour healthy fats like eggs, fish, and avocados. These fats help you get leaner while also giving your body the nutrition it craves. Here's a list of some top keto fats with some recipes to try with the key ingredient, too.

Simone De La Rue Shows How to Sculpt a Sexy Back in Just 3 Moves

This Is What Happened When I Ate Pizza and Pasta Every Day For a Week

Keto, intermittent fasting, Whole30 . . . people are in constant search for the next weight-loss solution. We're willing to go to such great lengths to achieve our desired physique, whether it means eliminating this or reducing that - but at what point are we sacrificing personal happiness? While I'm all for promoting a healthy diet, I do not believe in deprivation of any kind, especially if it calls for cutting out carbs. And I don't know about you, but I consider pizza and pasta to be synonymous with happiness, which is why I pitched an editor experiment that encourages a better relationship with food. I offered to eat pizza or pasta every single day for one week (I know, I'm so selfless) - here's how it went down.

Each day of my "diet" required eating pasta or pizza either for lunch or dinner. And guess what? By the very end of the week, I looked and felt exactly the same as I did before I started. Cue the gasps. But here are three things I did notice:

  1. It made me want to work out more. Admittedly, eating pizza and pasta every day did make me feel a little guilty. But as a result, it motivated me to the hit the gym more times that week than usual.
  2. My workouts were better. On top of having more motivation, I also felt like I had more energy, which really helped me maximize my workouts. I even beat my personal best on the treadmill.
  3. My cravings decreased. I didn't find myself looking for snacks throughout the day because I got my fix at lunch or dinner.

Now, I didn't pitch this idea in search of any sort of body transformation. What had inspired it, aside from the obvious, was because I know how easy it is to get caught up in calorie counting, macro tracking, or whatever else method is out there. As a fitness editor, I see which topics resonate most with our readers, which are often weight loss and diets. We're always looking for the next best thing that can guarantee results, and I get it. But what many don't realize is that eating a salad-only diet doesn't automatically make you healthy; nor does allowing yourself to indulge make you any less. Like with anything, moderation is key. As long as you exercise regularly and eat clean the rest of the time, you'll be fine.

We need to stop demonizing certain foods and instead, learn to adopt a lifestyle that balances what we love and what we need. Like I've said before, treat yourself because you want it, not because you "deserve" it. Punishing yourself for falling weak to another cheat meal is not a healthy practice. Rather than cutting out foods you're not supposed to eat, enjoy them and then pile on the veggies if you really want to make up for it. Am I going to continue eating carbs unapologetically? Absolutely. Life's too short, so have your pizza and pasta and eat it, too.

I Took a Cold Shower Every Day For a Week, and This Is Why It Was a Game Changer

When one of my friends, who is a fellow trainer, told me he has been taking cold showers every day for two years, I thought he had completely lost his mind. But he told me that cold showers have helped him recover faster from workouts and have more energy in the mornings. I'm always up to try just about anything, so I figured I'd give this a shot and see how it went.

I committed to taking one cold shower every day for one week. That didn't mean I had to jump straight into cold water. If I needed to wash my hair first with warm water, I would do that, but then I would gradually make the water cooler until it was pretty cold. Then I would inch my way underneath the running water, lather myself up with soap, and rinse it all off. There were a few yelps here and there, but I made it through the whole week. This is how all that borderline torture affected my body.

I Had Way More Energy Throughout the Day

When cold water hits your body, your heart rate immediately elevates. This automatically causes a rush of blood to course through you - and it's like a strong shot of caffeine. I couldn't help but feel more energetic and vibrant as I was leaving the gym every morning. It felt better than any cup of coffee or green tea every could, and the best part was, there were no side effects or afternoon crash to deal with later on.

My Skin Looked Radiant

I had heard before that cool water is good for your skin because it tightens your pores and prevents excess dirt from entering. It also prevents your skin from overproducing oil, which is a big issue for me. I noticed my skin was a little less greasy every day, and it just looked like I had healthier skin overall. Maybe it was the placebo effect - and if it was, so be it! I loved how my makeup was looking every day.

I Was in a Better Mood

There's something euphoric about surviving through a cold shower. I felt invincible at the start of every morning, as if I had already accomplished something pretty awesome before the day even really got started. That's definitely something I could live with every single day.

I Didn't Feel Like I Recovered From My Workouts Any Faster

I didn't notice any difference when it came to recovery, to be honest. This may have been because I didn't spend that much time in cold water every day. Ice baths are apparently a better way to find faster recovery. I'm not completely opposed to trying an ice bath, but I don't have a bathtub at home, so I can't really test this out.

Even though it wasn't a magical cure to my muscle soreness, I still enjoyed all the cold showers, and I will probably keep them up once or twice a week or whenever I need a jolt of energy.

Learn How to Finally Do a Push-Up Correctly With This Clever Trainer Tip

Out of all the bodyweight exercises one can do, I've realized that push-ups tend to be one of the hardest movements to learn. As a trainer, I work with a lot of clients who have specific goals, and learning how to do a proper push-up is always on the top of their lists. For most, perfecting a push-up is a matter of building strength and learning how to move the weight of their body correctly. Instead of having my clients attempt push-ups until failure with incorrect form (and foster an "I can't" mentality), I start by breaking down each aspect of the push-up.

First, we focus on push and pull exercises like rows, chest presses, bicep curls, and chest flys. Next, I'll have them practice holding a plank for 10-30 seconds, since push-ups require core strength and stability. Once they have a strong foundation, they advance to practicing push-ups with yoga blocks. This is effective because they're able to master the movement pattern without compromising their form.

Here's how to do it:

  • Start in a plank position with your arms and legs straight, shoulders above your wrists, and two yoga blocks stacked vertically underneath your chest.
  • Take a breath in, and as you exhale, bend your elbows out to the sides and lower your chest toward the ground. Stop as soon as your chest touches the yoga blocks. Inhale to straighten the arms. This counts as one rep.
  • If this is too difficult, do this exercise with your knees on the floor.
  • Complete two sets of 10 reps.
  • As you continue to get stronger, remove a yoga block to increase the depth of the push-up. Eventually you'll be able to work your way up to doing a push-up without a yoga block.

Naturally, Princess Charlotte Steals the Spotlight in Her Brother's Official Christening Portraits

Prince Louis's christening portraits are here, and his big sister Charlotte managed to steal the spotlight - would you expect anything else? On Sunday, the royal family shared a handful of official photos from their third child's christening, which took place at the Chapel Royal at St. James's Palace in London on July 9. In the sweet snaps, Kate Middleton cradles her baby boy in her arms in the garden of Clarence House and poses lovingly with the rest of her family in a series of group shots. Huddled around the sleeping 3-month-old are his parents; siblings George and Charlotte (who is adorable while checking on her baby brother in one photo); and grandparents Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and Michael and Carole Middleton. Kate's brother James and pregnant sister Pippa and her husband James Matthews make an appearance, as do newlyweds Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Aw! Meghan Markle Tears Up Watching Close Friend Serena Williams at Wimbledon

Meghan Markle and Serena Williams have a rain-or-shine kind of friendship. The Duchess of Sussex stepped out with sister-in-law Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, to cheer on Serena at Wimbledon, and she couldn't help but shed some proud tears for her friend along the way.

Serena went head-to-head with fellow tennis pro Angelique Kerber during the women's finals on July 14, and while she finished as runner-up, it's clear it took a powerhouse to make it that far. During an interview, Serena was praised as a "super human, super mom," and while the 36-year-old athlete modestly demured at the compliments, a video shows Meghan tearing up in the stands around 40 seconds in. While the royals are famously polite and reserved in their support at public events, it's clear Serena has a special place in Meghan's heart - she was a guest at the royal wedding, after all.

Meghan Markle's Dad Believes She's "Terrified" by the Pressure of Her New Royal Role

Meghan Markle's father, Thomas Markle, is worried about the influence of royal life on his daughter, and he wants to get back in touch. While the 73-year-old former lighting director chose not to attend his daughter's wedding after a health scare and photo controversy, he recently told The Sun he believes Meghan's "terrified" by her new royal role.

"I see it in her eyes, I see it in her face, and I see it in her smile," he said. "I've seen her smile for years. I know her smile. I don't like the one I'm seeing now."

Thomas elaborated, saying he notices Meghan wearing a "pained smile" now, which he thinks could be because "she's under too much pressure."

He also feels "shunned" by the royal family and his daughter, after he was caught staging photos with the paparazzi. Thomas said Prince Harry and Meghan forgave him for the stunt before the wedding, but he's tried to reach out to his daughter since with no response. He doesn't have an address or phone number for Meghan directly but said he has sent texts to a Kensington Palace staff member in hopes of reaching Meghan.

"If I had one message for her it would be that I'm sorry for anything that went wrong," Thomas shared. "I'd like to put our differences behind us and get together."

Kate Middleton Can't Stop Giggling With Prince William During Their Wimbledon Day Date

It's a royal day date! Prince William and Kate Middleton took their annual trip to Wimbledon on July 15 to watch the Men's Singles final, and there were plenty of giggles all around.

For Kate, this is Wimbledon part two, since she attended the Women's Singles final with new sister-in-law Meghan Markle the day before. She basically radiated sunshine in her bright yellow dress, while laughing out loud with her husband. The couple left their three children George, Charlotte, and Louis at home, to spend a little time alone together. Ahead, see even more snaps of their romantic outing. From the looks of their contagious smiles, the date was well worth it.

Meghan Markle Explains the Reason Her Friendship With Serena Williams Works

Serena Williams has been dominating Wimbledon, and on Saturday, the 36-year-old tennis champ will have a special friend cheering her on in the stands: Meghan Markle. On Thursday, Kensington Palace released a statement saying that both Meghan and Kate Middleton would be attending the women's singles final, and we could not be more excited.

Meghan and Serena first met at the Super Bowl in 2010 and have been friends ever since. In fact, Meghan frequently attends Serena's matches at the US Open and Wimbledon and Serena was front and center at Meghan and Prince Harry's nuptials earlier this year. While Meghan and Serena both "have a penchant for hot sauces and adore fashion," the duchess previously wrote on her now-deleted blog that what connects them is their "belief in exceeding expectations" and their "endless ambition." Baba Yaga From Ant-Man and the Wasp Is Real, and OMG, She's a Nightmare

We've already cleared up who exactly Ghost is in the new Ant-Man and the Wasp movie, but if you've already seen it, you're now probably wondering this: what the heck is a Baba Yaga? If you remember, when Scott Lang (otherwise known as Ant-Man) reunites with his crew to discuss Ghost, computer hacker Kurt compares her strange powers to that of a legendary figure called Baba Yaga. If you've never heard of Baba Yaga, you no doubt wondered if the reference was total invention - some witch-like figure, as Kurt describes. However, it turns out that Baba Yaga is very real - at least, according to Russian folklore.

Also known as Baba Yaga Boney Legs, this figure appears in stories as an iron-toothed witch with a skeletal frame (despite her massive appetite). However, she does not have the stereotypical appearance of witches from American legends - instead of a pointy hat and broomstick, Baba Yaga is known to push herself around in large mortar, using a pestle as an oar. But, if that doesn't sound particularly frightening, it turns out she can also fly (which seems like a much more efficient way to get around than her mortar boat, but that's just our take).

Image Source: Getty / Fine Art Images / Heritage Images

Baba Yaga is said to live in a secluded hut in a forest, though the hut has the ability to move around by sprouting a pair of chicken legs. When visitors dare to enter her hut, she will ask them whether they came of their own free will, or whether they were sent to her. The catch: only one answer is right. The fence made of human bones and skulls surrounding her hut suggests that wrong answers are not taken lightly.

Kurt draws a comparison between the Ghost and Baba Yaga due to their shared ability to disappear on site. Baba Yaga tends to bring theatrics when she appears on scene - often accompanied in stories by creaking trees, whirling leaves, and the howls of a host of spirits - but when she departs, Baba Yaga is able to sweep away all traces of herself with a broom made of silver birch (which is definitely way cooler than being able to ride it).

But also like Ghost, Baba Yaga is more complicated than she first appears. Although Baba Yaga mostly appears in stories as a terrifying old witch, she can also play the role of an aid, as she has no power over the pure of heart. Baba Yaga rules over the natural elements, and just like nature, she is as capable of being wild and untamed as she is of being nurturing and giving.

Let's All Bask in the Beauty of Troye Sivan Together, as a Group

This year has already been quite an exciting experience for Troye Sivan. The queer indie pop star has been hot on the music scene with bops like "Bloom" and bangers like "My My My." And on top of that, he made his Saturday Night Live debut and even set up a dreamy collab with Ariana Grande! But music and career aside, there's something else about Troye that we really must address: his absolutely jaw-dropping gorgeous face. Sometimes he looks like an angel, and sometimes he looks a precious porcelain doll. But the bottom line is that he always looks like a cutie. So, we slapped together a gallery that slaps almost as hard as his music.

Whether she's strutting her stuff on the red carpet alongside husband Russell Wilson or sharing a steamy bikini snap on Instagram, Ciara's definitely got it, and she's flaunting it! However, we especially love her music videos - they are just so sexy! See some of Ciara's hottest video moments ahead.

A Breakdown of the Who, Where, and Possibly Why in Ariana Grande's "God Is a Woman" Video

Ariana Grande has come through with another music video, and this time she's shaking the table with some seriously trippy visuals - and we're into it. Not only does the "God Is a Woman" video feature a surprise vocal cameo from Madonna, but there are also screaming lemmings, Greek and Roman mythological creatures, and more. "God Is a Woman" is not just a female empowerment bop; it's Grande's anthem embracing her femininity and her sexuality and combining those themes with spirituality in a visually rich and symbolic-as-all-hell music video.

There's so much to unpack in the music video, it might seem a bit much. Luckily, I am more than ready to tackle the challenge of decoding the references and have included some of the standouts here. Enjoy!

The Queer Eye Season 2 Episode That Left the Fab Five Crying Into Their Happy Meals

After two emotional seasons, Queer Eye has become known for making both its viewers and hosts involuntarily sob. While different moments resonate with each member of the so-called Fab Five, Antoni Porowski recently shared the season two episode that definitively guttered them all. (Yes, it's the episode about Tammye.)

In the season two premiere, "God Bless Gay," the Netflix show's Bobby Berk, Karamo Brown, Tan France, Jonathan Van Ness, and Porowski help Tammye renovate her local community center in preparation for an annual homecoming event. Along the way, they counsel and make over the mother and cancer survivor in the heartwarming way they often do, and in return, Tammye radiates positivity and imparts her life-changing wisdom. It was such a special episode in fact, that it was actually filmed as the season finale.

"Tammye's episode was actually filmed as the last one. Originally, it was going to be the last episode to air of the season," Porowski told POPSUGAR in a recent interview. "It was such a fricking emotional rollercoaster - as you can see from my snot-crying throughout the episode." After realizing the impact of the episode, it was decided that it would instead open the season. "It was the one episode where we weren't sitting down and watching her accomplish her mission. It was more of a 'she's teaching us' episode."

Related: Here's EXACTLY How Much You're Going to Sob While Watching Queer Eye Season 2

Though the cast was "relieved and excited" to wrap the season and get back to their respective families, the emotional experience of filming Tammye's episode made them want to share one last meal together . . . at McDonald's. "We stopped by McDonald's and we all fully binged," Porowski said. "I had three cheeseburgers, a Big Mac, a six-piece chicken tender, a McFlurry, the Oreo one, and - oh, yeah - and I had a chicken Snack Wrap, the one that has mayo and iceberg lettuce."

After their McDonald's feast, Porowski said the Fab Five drove around listening to Rihanna and Britney Spears. "It was amazing," he said. "Yes, we were brought together through artificial circumstances, chemistry-testing, and Netflix, but we're all friends for life and we all consider ourselves brothers."

These Hilarious Questions About Sex Are So Pure, We Almost Feel Bad For Laughing

I vaguely remember sex-ed from elementary school. I can recall anatomical worksheets and giggling when my teacher explained it all to us. I remember a boy in my class falling backwards in his chair and fainting while we watched The Miracle of Life. Our teacher had the daunting task of walking a group of curious, shy, embarrassed children through this topic, so she opened up an anonymous question box, through which students could ask questions and receive honest answers - a bold move.

Well, it appears my sweet teacher was not the only one with this brilliant idea. A now-viral tweet proves that teachers are still using this tactic, and kids are still so (hilariously) pure with their responses. I truly couldn't stop laughing at one child's question about a "penise" and a "Virginia." Also, there's apparently a child out there who "knows" intercourse takes 24 hours? I gasped. Check out the full list of questions ahead and see if you have a favorite - people on the internet have already picked their own.

I Love You, Family, but Please Don't Ask to Stay

I don't think there is any way for me to say this without sounding like a jerk, but I dread it when relatives ask if they can stay at my home. It's not that I don't love them or enjoy spending time with them. I do - but I have my limits.

I was raised by a strict Italian mother who prides herself on her well-kept home. When company was coming over, she'd put my brother and me to work cleaning every nook and cranny in the house and making sure everything was spotless for our guests. Although I admit I am not as great of a housekeeper as my mother is, I did inherit the need to clean like a crazy woman when my relatives are coming and the intense anxiety that comes with not having everything in order. It turns me into the Energizer Bunny, but instead of being cute and fluffy, I'm stressed and angry. My husband can always tell when family is coming over - and he knows to steer clear of me.

I also stress over the fact that I will be cooking for my relatives. Between helping my two school-aged children with homework and chauffeuring them to their extracurricular activities, our dinners often consist of macaroni and cheese or a pizza we picked up on the way home - definitely not something I would be proud to serve my visiting relatives. I know they will politely smile and say, "It's fine," but deep in my heart, I know that this greasy deep dish pizza is not Pinterest-worthy. Even if I do have the time to cook a wholesome meal for my relatives, I worry that they won't like it and will be too polite to say so.

As I mentioned earlier, I have two young children. One of them has ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and thrives on routine. When we have company over, my kids are understandably excited and want to stay up at night with them. Unfortunately, if my child's bedtime routine is off by just a little bit, it will throw her entirely out of whack. She will have a difficult time falling asleep, get a bad night's rest (as will my husband and I), and then will have a horrible day at school due to her exhaustion and inevitable irritability. Some of my relatives understand this and will try not to get the kids worked up at night, which I appreciate. Unfortunately, their mere presence is what is exciting my kids and throwing their routines off.

As an adult, I enjoy routines as well. After I do the dishes in the evening, for example, I make my kids' lunches, pay bills, and do some laundry. When relatives are over, I feel responsible for entertaining them. While I am forcing myself to make chitchat with them, which is something I am not very good at, I end up neglecting my other responsibilities. I suppose I could multitask, but folding my lingerie while talking to Uncle Andrew about his upcoming hip surgery just doesn't sound right to me. Having family over disrupts my routines and my life!

To my relatives, I love you. I appreciate you. I enjoy spending time with you. But please, don't put me in an awkward position by asking to stay at my house. It sends my stress level through the roof, gives me anxiety attacks, and throws the lives of everyone in my family off. Please respect that so that I don't have to respectfully decline.

Mom Giving Birth Has No Idea Her Dog Was By Her Side the Entire Time

When photographer Kristin Waner was documenting the home birth of a mom named Brooke, she quickly noticed that the family dog, Ranger, was in nearly every shot.

"From the moment I walked in the door, Ranger was so excited," Kristin, who owns Kristin Ann Photography, said. "You could tell he knew something was happening. He quickly came in to greet me, then headed right back to the bedroom to be with Brooke as she labored. He was very curious as to what was going on."

"You could tell he knew something was happening. He quickly came in to greet me, then headed right back to the bedroom to be with Brooke as she labored."

Although birth in itself is beautiful, Kristin couldn't resist snapping a few extra photos of the "bond between mom and baby and man's best friend." Every moment she saw the corgi interacting with Brooke, she tried to take as many photos as possible. "I knew this was special," she said.

Once they moved to the birthing tub, "Ranger would come and give her another reassuring kiss, then back to the couch he went" until a baby girl, Berkeley, was born.

Although Kristin noticed the presence of the "little doggie doula," she realized that Brooke didn't. "When I sent the preview to Brooke, she had no idea he never left her side," she said. "It was so nice that I could capture that for her and she now can look back and see things she otherwise might not have noticed."

What also made these photos of Ranger so moving was that Kristin had also photographed Brooke's two previous births and recalled that with the very first delivery, she had a sweet dog named Ryder, who also never left her side. "Ryder did not get to see the birth of Berkeley, but his brother Ranger was there to step in. I am so glad she was given not one, but two sweet corgis to help guide her through her journey."

Read on for all the moving photos from both dog-friendly births.

6 Things You Need to Know About Raising a Middle-Schooler

If one thing can be said about Bo Burnham's debut feature film, Eighth Grade, it's that the movie isn't your run-of-the-mill coming-of-age story. While there are dozens of flicks out there that center on the first kiss between two tweens and romanticize the entire concept of growing up, Eighth Grade is not one of them.

Instead, the film focuses on Kayla Day (Elsie Fisher), a 13-year-old with big dreams for the future, who, like most kids her age, is struggling with her confidence. Viewers are taken on a wild ride watching Kayla go through rites of passage like having a more-than-serious crush on the popular boy at school and dealing with moments of crippling insecurity at a pool party, all set to a pretty banging soundtrack.

Although the movie is certainly gritty - and will definitely make you cringe from secondhand embarrassment more than once - it perfectly nails what middle-school-aged kids have to deal with on a regular basis. So if you ever find yourself wondering what exactly your kiddo goes through on a daily basis, this movie can pretty much answer all your questions.

Scroll through all the important lessons that Eighth Grade tackles, and don't forget to check it out when it hits theaters on July 13.

7 Chemical-Free Hacks For Keeping Bees Away

The Reason Why 1 Mom Breastfeeds Her 7-Year-Old Son Will Make Critics Swallow Their Words

Lisa Bridger, a single mom of five from Australia, knows just how beneficial breastfeeding can be. Coupled with her job at Occupy Breastfeeding, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping mothers "take back" the concept of feeding their children, it's no surprise Lisa is a big proponent of extended breastfeeding. And while Lisa has been nursing on-and-off for decades - her oldest daughter is 22 years old - Lisa admits that she's been breastfeeding her 7-year-old-son Chase, who has autism, longer than usual.

She told POPSUGAR that she often tandem feeds Chase alongside his 4-year-old brother for several reasons, including the fact it helps soothe him when it seems like absolutely nothing else will.

"It helps him reconnect after a meltdown; he won't take medication," she said. "My milk contains melatonin, which helps him get to sleep."

The Right Way to Cover Up a Hickey - So You Can Get Back to Business

If you thought having a hickey in high school was embarrassing, try having one as a 24-year-old young professional. Combine that with a penchant for men with vampire-like kissing styles and pale, easily bruised skin and you get me - the most hickey-prone individual you could meet.

After a particularly steamy evening, I woke up the next morning to find a crater-sized red mark on my neck. Back in the day, I might have freaked out, but I've become a pro at the cover-up. The key is in just a few essential products: a color-correcting concealer, a toothbrush, an ice pack, and powder. Keep reading ahead for my tried-and-true tips to looking like a put-together human as quickly as possible . . . so you can go back to all that Summer loving.

Yellow Blush Is Here - and It Looks Surprisingly Good

You may not think a lemon or mustard hue could look anything but sickly on the skin, but get this: yellow blush is here, and it's surprisingly wearable. Not only is the high-fashion look versatile, but it also looks flattering on a range of skin tones. You can wear it with a coordinating yellow-orange eye shadow or lip, or keep the rest of your makeup minimal. While there aren't many blushes available in the particular shade, a yellow shadow does just fine. (It's possible that the trend started when Rihanna debuted her yellow-gold highlighter Fenty Trophy Wife ($34) in 2017, so you could also use that.)

5 Steps to Take If Your Skin Is Reacting Badly to a Beauty Product

Getting a skin reaction can be scary, particularly if you don't know what to do to calm the irritation. Whether it was caused by using too many products, using products with ingredients that clash, or just plain using the wrong product for your skin type, it's hard to know what to do next. We asked aesthetic doctor Dr. David Jack and medical director Dr. Ross Perry for a step-by-step guide on how to deal when your skin starts acting up.

Step 1

It might sound simple, but stop using the product. Even if you think your skin might be "purging," your complexion shouldn't hurt. Dr. Perry recommends thinking about what you've recently added to your routine that may have triggered the reaction.

Step 2

Wash your face well with fragrance-free soap and water to remove every trace of product.

Step 3

If the skin is red and irritated, Dr. Jack recommends applying a calming lotion like calamine. If the skin is blistered, use an antiseptic lotion. Dr. Perry adds that you can also apply some over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream to help with inflammation and itching, and if you notice any puffiness, take an antihistamine tablet (like Benadryl).

Step 4

Dr. Perry recommends you "keep the area well moisturized with greasy hypoallergenic creams, such as Sudocrem."

Step 5

Know when it's something more serious. Dr. Jack says that if the problem is an acid burn, "these need to be properly neutralized." Talk to your dermatologist if this is the case or if the irritation is spreading to other areas of your face or getting worse.

Ariana Grande’s Hair Is Blonder and Longer Than Ever on Elle's New Cover

Ariana Grande is back with another gorgeous magazine cover and once again, the ponytail is nowhere to be seen.

After letting her hair down for her Vogue UK cover last month, Grande has upped the ante even more for the August edition of Elle. Her hair has never been longer or blonder - and it's so good. One glance at Twitter is enough to confirm that Arianators are serious fans of the new cover. One tweeted, "HOLY F*CKING F*CKS. ARIANA LOOKS SO F*CKING AMAZING ON THE COVER OF ELLE MAGAZINE IM CRYING!! 😍😍😍"

Her superlong blond hair was styled by Josh Liu, and you'd never guess that this was their first time working together, "swishing and tossing strands by the handful, just out of frame, for hours" on set. Although her most recent shoots have shown her in a new light, this probably isn't the end of her iconic pony. Grande hasn't forgotten about her signature style with all this new-found glamour. When asked what her favorite ponytail was, she responded: "the high, sleek, dark one. But she takes many forms. Many forms. There are lots of different girls in this sisterhood."

As for the makeup, it was kept minimal. Makeup artist, Patrick Ta did a neutral-toned lip, fresh skin, and barely-there eye shadow.

You can see the full feature in the August issue of Elle, available online now, or on newsstands July 24.

Ever since Crew Gaines made his debut on Joanna Gaines's Instagram account, we've noticed two things: that he is just as adorable as we'd imagined and that olive green is definitely his color. In the past few weeks, we've seen Crew swathed in an olive green receiving blanket sleeping peacefully in his hospital bed and on Chip Gaines's leg. When we saw little Crew's matching olive green pacifier in Joanna Gaines's Instagram Stories, we felt compelled to investigate this vision of earthy monochromatic perfection.

We Need to Talk About Disneyland's Magical Doughnut Selection, Y'all

If your doughnut doesn't inspire exclamations of envy from random passersby, is it really worth it? (Probably, because doughnuts are the freakin' best, but that doesn't serve to illustrate our point.) Thankfully, the fried, doughy rings of goodness at Disneyland are the best of the best. It wasn't until quite recently that Disney started offering doughnuts for hungry guests, but the addition to the resort's snack selection was an instant hit. As it turns out, nobody does doughnuts quite like the happiest place on earth!

You can find Disney doughnuts at several locations throughout the California resort: the Coffee Cart near Fantasy Faire on Disneyland's Main Street, Schmoozies in Disney's California Adventure, and the Disneyland Hotel Coffee Shop. Most items in Disney's impressive doughnut selection run about $6 per pop, but based on photos from contented park guests, they definitely seem worth the cost!

6 Closet Organization Tips I Learned Straight From an Ikea Pro

Marie Kondo once said, "Storage should reduce the effort needed to put things away, not the effort needed to get them out." From personal experience, I can attest she's right. For years I lived with my bedroom in a state of perpetual clutter for the sole reason that there was no easy place for me to put my stuff away. Piles of pants grew into mountains, purses overflowed out of one tiny closet until the door wouldn't close, and shirts took up long-term residency atop one of three dilapidated dressers because the broken drawers required exhaustive wrestling to open. Soon the room was more laundry pile than personal space. I was overwhelmed, and my response was to keep the door shut.

Despite the poor condition my clothing and accessories were living in, I valued them and had spent time building a fashion collection I cared about. I wanted a storage solution to match; something that not only accommodated all my items, but celebrated them. I wanted a celeb-worthy dream closet - but getting Champagne on my beer budget wasn't going to be easy. Just when I had given up and resigned to living in a name-brand garbage dump, Ikea reached out to me.

The retailer's incredibly talented home tour makeover squad knew just how to give me the luxurious high-fashion wardrobe storage solution I craved at a reasonable price. Designer Stephanie Recupero led the project. After seeing the space and learning of my needs, she declared that a customized Pax wardrobe was just the solution I was looking for. Check out the slideshow ahead to learn Stephanie's six pro design decisions that made my closet so fantastic, and then read how my new wardrobe impacted so much more than my clothes.
