The Worst Cheeses You Can Eat If You're Trying to Lose Weight, According to Dietitians

Let's just get one thing clear: there's no such thing as "good" or "bad" foods. Sure, there are some foods that are more nutritious for your body than others, but assigning moral value to foods is a recipe (pun intended!) for disordered eating and a poor relationship with food.

That being said, there are some foods that can help you reach your goals faster. For example, there are some cheeses that can help you reach weight-loss goals because they are low-calorie, satiating, full of vitamins, or packed with protein. On the flip side, there are some cheeses that will add some extra calories and grams of saturated fat to your daily diet, which could stall your progress or even cause you to pack on the pounds.

Keep in mind, this is mostly for people who are doing good old-fashioned calorie or macro counting, not keto, which encourages the consumption of full-fat dairy. That being said, here are the cheeses dietitians recommend avoiding if you're trying to lose weight.

I Gave Up Alcohol For 1 Week, and This Is What Happened

Ever since I was a teenager, I've worked hard and played hard. And the whole "playing hard" part typically involved alcohol. As a collegiate soccer player, our whole team celebrated with booze after a good win - or loss, for that matter. Today, after becoming a real-life adult and a mother of two, I still like to drink a couple of times a week. Wine, rum, a microbrew - you name it, I like to drink it. No, I don't stay out at bars into the wee hours of the night like I did when I was a 20-something, but from time to time, I enjoy a buzz. My husband and I will enjoy some drinks by the bonfire or with a Netflix show, or I'll overindulge when I get a night away with the girls. But the older I get, the more the alcohol negatively affects me, and the hangovers are the worst.

Yes, I really shouldn't be drinking anymore because I'm finding that it's just not worth it. I'm much more tired because the alcohol keeps me tossing and turning all night. And I almost always take my crankiness out on the kids, something I always regret. My gut protrudes much more than I'd like it to, too. And then I, of course, only want to eat greasy food. Plus, my energy level is far too low to exercise, making me feel even more sluggish. The hangovers are getting worse with my increasing age. Sometimes it only takes a couple of drinks to make my head pound the next morning. So after all of these negative side effects, I wondered . . . why do I even drink? I couldn't come up with one solid reason, so I stopped drinking for more than a week to see what happened. Here's what I found out.

I Have Energy Like a 20-Something Again

The biggest difference I found after giving up all alcohol for one week is my boost in energy. I pop out of bed in the morning and get my workout in as soon as possible (after a quick cup of joe, of course). My day starts with a jolt, and I'm charged for the rest of the day. I don't feel lethargic, needing that midday coffee or nap, either. I push through all day, crossing things off of my to-do list. And most importantly, I have energy for my small kids, something I didn't always have before. Now I don't have that guilt looming over my head if I'm too tired to play soccer with my son. Instead, I bounce up and kick the ball around with him in the backyard.

I Can Finally Wear That Slinky Dress Again

Not that this should matter, but an added perk to giving up alcohol is that I have dropped a couple of pounds. A no-brainer, yes, but I always wondered if the number on the scale would drop if I stopped drinking altogether. Nearing the end of my alcohol-free week, I grabbed a slinky dress for a date night that I hadn't felt comfortable wearing, and to my surprise, I rocked it with confidence. My bloating stomach settled down, and I no longer craved that greasy food like I used to. Instead, I grabbed an apple or handful of almonds rather than a double cheeseburger and fries. I've been happy to see those pounds drop because those extra pounds just weighed me down.

I Wake Up With a Smile Painted Across My Face

Honestly, the biggest perk I've found since giving up alcohol has been my happiness. Cheesy, but true. On the mornings after I drank too many glasses of wine or bottles of beer, I'd wake up feeling regretful. I'd take my crankiness and tiredness out on my family, but in reality, I just felt bad about myself. But now, I get out of bed and smile at my children. I hug them tight and we start our days off right, something I should have been doing all along.

Final Thoughts

Will I give up alcohol forever? No. Drinking during the week just because won't happen anymore, but if I'm celebrating a loved one or at the lake, then I may crack open a nice cold beer. But I have made up my mind to prohibit all hard liquor and only have a couple of light beers or a glass of wine on occasion. Feeling like crap the next day and ruining everyone's day just isn't worth it to me. I've learned that I can "play hard" by working out and living spontaneously. Playing hard doesn't have to look like unwinding with alcohol. I look forward to living life hard and waking up with a smile on my face because that's what my family and I deserve.

Vegans and Vegetarians, Listen Up: Here's How to Do a Plant-Based Keto Diet

Going keto is more than just a diet trend; it's a lifestyle transformation that has helped people lose weight, gain more energy, lower blood sugar levels, and fight inflammation. The keto diet is a high-fat, moderate-protein, super low-carb diet that puts your body into a state of ketosis wherein your body burns fat instead of carbs for energy. Although each person's specific macronutrient breakdown varies, it's generally about 80 percent fat, 15 percent protein, and five percent carbs.

But while countless people have found success on the keto diet, it can be quite limiting for people who are vegetarian or vegan. Since the diet is so low-carb - less than 50 grams a day - many vegan staples, such as quinoa, brown rice, and sprouted grain bread, are out. Although it's difficult, it is possible for people who eschew animal products to successfully do the keto diet. Our friends at Virta Health, a weight-loss clinic that helps treat type 2 diabetes patients with a ketogenic diet, outlined some key pointers for vegans and vegetarians who are interested in trying the keto diet.

As always, be sure to consult with your doctor or registered dietitian before embarking on any major dietary changes. The keto diet, especially a plant-based keto diet, should be done under medical supervision.

This Doctor Explains Why Vegetarians Should Do the Keto Diet

If you follow any keto lovers on Instagram, then you're probably bombarded with mouthwatering photos of bunless burgers and chicken wings and bacon-wrapped everything. And while meat does play a role in the keto diet, it doesn't have to be the diet's foundation. In fact, it's totally possible to do the keto diet without eating meat.

The keto diet, which is high fat, moderate protein, and super low carb, has helped countless people lose weight and totally transform their lives. Although it's a little more difficult, it's totally possible for vegetarians and vegans to go keto. Especially for vegetarian who still consume eggs and dairy (lacto-ovo vegetarians) - full-fat dairy is a staple of the keto diet.

But not only is the keto diet doable for vegetarians, it's actually advised for those who are diabetic or have metabolic syndrome, which is a cluster of conditions that include high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess abdominal fat, and increased cholesterol levels.

"A well-formulated ketogenic diet has been demonstrated to be very effective in reversing type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome," Steve Phinney, MD, PhD, chief medical officer at Virta Health, told POPSUGAR. "These conditions are increasingly common, even in vegetarians."

Dr. Phinney and his colleagues treat type 2 diabetes patients with the keto diet at the Virta Clinic. Patients who followed a keto diet under medical supervision at the Virta Clinic saw a reduction in blood sugar levels, heart disease risk factors, fatty liver, and less dependency on medications. They also had lower markers for inflammation.

Since vegetarians can also get heart disease, fatty liver, diabetes, and have inflammation, the keto diet could be helpful to lose weight and get their chronic conditions, including type 2 diabetes, under control. And even though many people assume the keto diet is all meat and cheese, it's actually incredibly veggie-heavy, which works out well for vegetarians.

"We typically instruct our patients to have four to five servings of non-starchy vegetables per day as part of a well-formulated ketogenic diet," Dr. Phinney explained. "While this seems like a lot to some of our omnivore patients, its just a normal day for a vegetarian."

Of course, be sure to speak to your doctor and other healthcare providers before making any major dietary changes, including going on the keto diet.

Want a Celebrity's Body? Here's Why Tracy Anderson Will Tell You That "It Can't Happen"

If you had five minutes to speak with a celebrity trainer, the first question many of us are probably dying to ask is how to get X's body. I mean, why wouldn't we want to know the fitness secrets of their star-studded clientele? Though you may be able to score some tips and tricks depending on who you talk to, one person who'll defer you to her publicist instead is Tracy Anderson, longtime friend and business partner of Gwyneth Paltrow and the badass woman behind her self-titled Method. POPSUGAR had the opportunity to meet with Tracy before she led a dance-cardio class for G. Sport Sessions, a fitness experience by Westin Hotels and Goop, and she made a comment that made us love her even more.

Speaking as her publicist: "You can ask [Tracy] how to get Jennifer Lopez's butt in three moves, you can ask her how to get Gwyneth Paltrow's legs in three moves, but she's going to keep telling you it can't happen," Tracy said.

To be clear, Tracy doesn't avoid these kinds of questions because she selfishly wants to keep all her trade secrets to herself. Not only is it physically impossible to alter your body to model after someone's (at least without cosmetic procedures), she explained that she does so in hopes of shifting the conversation and promoting self-love. "If you focus on wanting to be someone else, you're going to completely miss the opportunity to be yourself," she said. "I'm going to give you the tools for that, but it has to be inwardly focused; it can't be flipping through Instagram and magazines and going, 'Look at that beautiful person, I want what they have.'"

Tracy echoed this sentiment when we asked what mantra she lives by: "I value my life, I love myself, and I want to show up for myself honestly," she shared. So if you want to take a page from her book, hold yourself accountable, be authentic, and don't forget to show yourself plenty of love.

After Trying All the Pills and Creams, This 1 Thing Finally Cleared My Acne in 2 Weeks

I'll never forget when I was babysitting one day after college and the tiny 1-year-old pointed to a monstrosity of a zit on my chin. I tried to ignore her and distract her with a toy, but she kept pointing. The mother looked at me sympathetically and just said, "Yep, she has a boo-boo."

At that point, it had been well over 10 years since I had experienced bad breakouts. I didn't have terrible acne that covered my face, but my issue was that I always had a few enormous, Rudolf-the-red-nosed-reindeer types of pimples that were deep, painful, and red. There was never a moment when I was zit-free; when one was going away, another few were popping up.

I was so self-conscious because it continued into my 30s, and no over-the-counter remedies or oral contraceptives helped one bit. I saw a dermatologist, determined to clear my skin before my wedding day in August 2008, but the harsh topical medications only made my skin red and irritated, and my skin didn't clear up at all. Into my mid to late 30s, my two pregnancies did help a little (thank you, hormones!), but after each baby was born, the acne would return. I was now 40 years old and still breaking out.

How I Cured My Acne

It wasn't until January 2017, when I gave up sugar for a month for my New Year's resolution, that I experienced soft, clear skin for the first time. I actually gave up sugar not for my skin (I didn't know it would help), but as a personal experiment to heal the belly bloat I had been experiencing for six months that my doctor couldn't figure out.

I not only felt better after the second week, feeling zero bloat and digestive issues, but the acne I've had on my chin since I was 12 years old disappeared. I kept looking in the mirror, waiting for a pimple to pop up, but my skin stayed clear for the rest of the month.

Was This Really the Answer?

After the month was up, I celebrated by splurging on homemade chocolate chip cookies. I mean, living without cake, brownies, ice cream, and chocolate for 30 days was tough. After a week of eating a little white sugar every day, my stomach waged war, and sure enough, so did my face.

I was so happy . . . and also pissed. I couldn't believe I found the one thing to heal my skin and prevent embarrassing breakouts and that it was so simple, but the cure really sucked! No sugar? No ordering dessert after dinner? No more baking? No more chocolate?!

How I Live With the Cure

Because I'm human - and my last name is Sugar - living 100 percent without treats really wasn't an option. I found ways to get my sweet fix without it affecting my face (or my stomach). I discovered how to bake with bananas and dates, making desserts that are just as sweet as using white sugar, and I can still get my chocolate fix by using cocoa powder in recipes. Ice cream is easy - I just make nice cream using frozen fruit.

Honestly, sugary treats just don't feel worth it anymore when they affect me so negatively. Even though I'm tempted when I see people enjoying cake at parties or eating pastries at coffee shops, I get over it real quick because I'm grateful that I've found the one food I can avoid that makes me look and feel healthy. That's not to say I never eat sugar ever. I do enjoy a couple bites every so often (and love every second), but I know how bad I'll feel if I eat a ton, and that prevents me from going overboard.

I wish I knew about this in junior high, because it would have saved me decades of feeling badly about my skin. If you suffer from acne and medications and other treatments haven't worked, sugar may be your issue, too. Wouldn't it be amazing if curing your acne was this simple? You'll never know unless you try. What have you got to lose?

US-Based Airlines Ranked From Worst to Best

It's taken me a lot of years to get to the point where I feel loyal to specific airlines. In the past, I always went with whatever was the cheapest and best fit my schedule. While I still do that to an extent, I also try to stick with the same one or two airlines when I fly domestic, because I've flown with them enough to feel like they've really earned my business. I've also spent enough time on airlines and had not-so-great experiences to not waste my time with them anymore.

I've taken stock of all my flying experiences to put together a definitive ranking of all the US-based airlines. My absolute favorite has been the same for as long as I've been traveling, but the ones in the middle have all changed around over the years. Keep reading to see where my favorites fall - and yours, for that matter.

Looking to reinvent your life by running away to Tuscany and buying a dilapidated villa on the spot? Well, even if you're searching for something a touch more low-key, you can live out that fantasy by staying in the real-life villa at the center of 2003's Under the Tuscan Sun. Then, of course, there are those countryside views that are enough to make you consider uprooting your life and moving to Italy. With enough room to host 20 guests, however, Villa Laura is not entirely wallet-friendly, as the nightly rate ranges from $2,385 to $4,090, depending on the season.

If Under the Tuscan Sun is still your go-to pick-me-up flick, or you have a Pinterest board dedicated to your dream Italian getaway, then maybe it's time to round up some friends and head to Villa Laura. At least it'll already be nice and renovated when you get there, right?

What It's Like Living With Macrodactyly, a Condition That Most People Have Never Heard Of

I can remember being 4, in a booster seat in the back of my dad's car. I don't remember where we were going, but I distinctly remember holding up my middle finger so the people driving behind us could see it. My dad saw what I was doing, and if my memory is correct, he made eye contact with me in the rearview mirror and said, "Jess-Jess, what are you doing? Put your finger down - that's not nice." To which I replied with something along the lines of, "I'm just showing the people behind us my big finger, Daddy!"

As a child, I was eager to show off my fingers. I thought they were cool. I was different than everyone else, and I was proud of it. My family always told me that my fingers made me special, and I believed them, but as I got older, my mentality changed.

Almost 20 years after my dad scolded me in his car, we had a very similar conversation to the one that we had when I was 4. He called me out for something that I didn't even know I was doing. This time, he asked, "Why are you doing that Jess?" I had no idea what he was talking about. "Why are you hiding your fingers? Are you doing it on purpose?" I couldn't give him a straight answer, because I didn't have one.

I was born with a condition called macrodactyly, meaning that I was born with larger-than-average digits. The middle and index fingers and bones are longer and wider on my right hand than my normal fingers. My middle finger is bulbous at the end, and when I was younger, it curved at the top and crossed over my ring finger. To me, they've always just been there.

My uncle was actually the first person to notice them. I think my parents were just so caught up in the joys of having their first child that they didn't really notice, and Lord only knows how the doctors missed them. When my parents asked the doctors about my fingers, they were given two options: they could let me keep them or have them amputated. (Spoiler alert: I got to keep them.)

My parents took me to several different hand doctors before they found one whose first thought wasn't to amputate my fingers. Dr. Mehul Mehta, an orthopedic hand surgeon, suggested a surgery to stop my fingers from growing in length, straighten out my middle finger, and relieve my carpal tunnel, which was caused by my condition.

I underwent three surgeries by the time I was 8, the first being at the age of 4. All of my operations consisted of getting rid of the growth plates and putting pins in my fingers to straighten them and stop growth. The operations didn't make my fingers look "normal," by any means, but they helped to stop them from becoming grossly oversized. Just to clarify, my fingers may technically be a "disability," but I can still do normal, everyday tasks.

Adults almost always preface their questions with, "Can I just ask . . . ?" And then they go into, "What happened to your finger?"

I've gotten a lot of stares in my 21 years, and sometimes I feel like an animal at the zoo or one of P.T. Barnum's circus acts. Kids are usually fascinated and are reprimanded by their parents when they ask questions. Adults almost always preface their questions with, "Can I just ask . . . ?" And then they go into, "What happened to your finger?" I work at the front desk of a residence hall, so I get many comments from college students who are either really respectful or blatantly rude. And then, of course, there are the people who don't notice or ignore it altogether.

Apart from being questioned 24/7, I've also had my fair share of rude encounters, like the four college-aged girls who approached me while I was at work. They very obviously stared at my hand as I reached for the computer mouse and immediately began to whisper and laugh while I was sitting not even two feet away.

There was also the guy on Halloween who asked, "Is that your Halloween costume?" Yes, sir. I most definitely dressed up as Girl With Big Fingers. I'm so happy you noticed.

By now, I'm used to rude comments and stares, but they still make me feel like sh*t. Just like anybody else would, I get uncomfortable and angry, and my face gets red, but I somehow always manage to keep my composure. Usually, I'll crack a joke or two to ease tensions and, if I'm being honest, to make myself feel better. I'm almost always humorous when it comes to discussing my fingers. It's a way of coping with being different. I think that making people laugh has always been my way of owning my situation. If people are laughing with me, they can't be laughing at me.

What people don't realize is that I use humor to put up a front. It gives me the power to control the direction of a conversation. If I'm making fun of myself, nobody has the chance to make fun of me - I beat them to the punchline.

Despite my comedic act, living with a "disability" really isn't that funny. The reality is it's incredibly easy to portray yourself as a confident person, and I do that through humor, but it's extremely difficult to actually have that confidence. I struggle every day with my insecurities. They can be paralyzing and depreciating to the point where all I can focus on is one awful thing someone said to me, and I end up picking myself apart over it.

Sometimes it gets so bad that I start to wonder what it would be like to be "normal." Would my life be any different? Would I have been a different person altogether? I could undergo surgery for a fourth time to thin out my fingers, but if my doctor ruins a nerve, I could lose all feeling in my right arm. Would it be worth it? Would having "normal" fingers make me more beautiful? Would I be a better person?

I'm not at all ashamed of who I am, but I feel like by wanting to be "normal," I'm betraying myself. It's a struggle between wanting to accept yourself and wanting to be like everyone else, and there's no exact way to navigate it. As far as normalcy goes, this is my version of it, and I need to learn to fully embrace it.

Office Makeup Just Got Way Easier Thanks to These New Summer Launches

In a perfect world, I'd have an hour every morning to dedicate to my makeup routine. But who am I kidding? After hitting snooze one (or five) times, I usually end up with only enough time to slap on a few products before running out the door, which is why I finish the rest of my look at my desk. I document the process each week for my POPSUGAR Beauty Instagram series called Desktop Beauty, and this week I got to play with some new Beauty by POPSUGAR launches.

The brand just released its new Trio Time Eye and a face palette, which feature three colored pans in nifty packaging. There are also three new colors coming to the Be the Boss Lip Gloss range, and one of them just might be my new favorite. Ahead, get a glimpse of how easy it was to get meeting-ready at my desk, then be sure to tune in each week for more of my desktop makeup sessions.

I Have Worn the Same $3 Liquid Eyeliner For 10 Years, and It Gets Me So Many Compliments

I'm a girl who likes to wear a sharp, inky-black cat eye on the regular. There's something about it that makes me feel both powerful and glamorous, so I have made it my go-to look since my teenage years. Time after time, friends, coworkers, and strangers have asked me the same question: "What eyeliner do you use?" There's nothing that brings me more joy than smugly telling them it's a $3 pick from the drugstore. Yes, I have been religiously swiping Wet n Wild MegaLiner Liquid Eyeliner on my lids for 10 years now, and I don't plan on stopping any time soon.

Before you become skeptical, know that I have tried my fair share of liquid liners. I am always curious to see if any high-end or drugstore brands can match the quality of my Wet n Wild pick, but they never do. MegaLiner Liquid Eyeliner comes in a small tube with a screw-top handle. The applicator, a flexible spongy brush, is easy to maneuver as I glide it across my skin. The harder you press, the thicker the line becomes, so you have a lot of control over the intensity of your look. The formula itself is smooth and matte. Its raven-black shade makes my blue eyes pop. All it takes is one coat to get a pleasing obsidian-dark effect.

For me, pen-tip applicators and pots with angle brushes don't give me the razor-sharp line I'm looking for. Only MegaLiner provides me with that smooth edge - I won't accept anything less. What can I say, a good cat eye has become a passion. It's time to set down your pricey choice and give my favorite a try. I can confidently promise you that it won't disappoint.

Let's be real, a $3 purchase is not a big risk to take. Even better - it's currently on sale for $2. I keep one in every purse I own. Read on to see close-ups of the liner itself and how it looks once it's applied.

You Can Stay in the Real-Life Villa From Under the Tuscan Sun - No Renovations Required

Looking to reinvent your life by running away to Tuscany and buying a dilapidated villa on the spot? Well, even if you're searching for something a touch more low-key, you can live out that fantasy by staying in the real-life villa at the center of 2003's Under the Tuscan Sun. The house has since undergone a discernible renovation - presumably not done by Diane Lane - and it is currently available for rent through Luxury Retreats.

Located in Cortona, Italy, the stunning Villa Laura, named Villa Bramasole in the movie, features 10 bedrooms, lush gardens, a wine cellar, and a pool.

Thalia's Nighttime Routine Always Involves This 1 Step

Thalia has been in the spotlight for over 20 years and still looks like she's aging in reverse. Are she and Jennifer Lopez keeping the location of the fountain of youth to themselves? We'll never know, but what we do know is the one secret that Thalia's mom taught her and she follows religiously.

"My mother was always obsessed with it when I was younger and has passed it on to me - you have to clean your face! No matter how tired you are, every single day before going to bed, you have to have a routine. The skin on your face depends on you and how you take care of it. It's the first thing people see, so you have to have a commitment to it," she told POPSUGAR at the launch of her Macy's Summer '18 Collection.

Not only did she reveal her holy-grail beauty secret, but Thalia also told us the five products she can't live without: blush, concealer, bronzer, mascara, and eyelashes. She also loves to wear "huge or very discreet eyelashes," and her favorite brand is Eylure, which is sold at the drugstore.

Throwing on a bit of makeup is great for confidence, but for Thalia it's all about how she feels on the inside. "You have to work on that every single day. No matter who you are, you have those little doubts. Some days you wake up on the wrong side of the bed, so you have to always pursue your positive side. Try to see everything in a very invigorating way. Positivity is really powerful and that's my motto," she said.
