15 Reasons I'm Ecstatic That Summer Break Is Almost Over
When Summer break began for my kids, I was all about giving them a fun, memorable few months. We went swimming practically every day, played endless games, and took trips to amusement parks and the beach on a weekly basis. It was great . . . for a while.
Now that we've entered the home stretch of the season, I've found myself slightly dreading the long, hot days with them. My fun mom status has officially turned into exhausted mom status, and I've over it. While swimming and sunshine were once appealing, now I'm all about finding peace and quiet. Fortunately for me, there's a light at the end of the tunnel, because school will be starting again soon, and to say I'm excited is a bit of an understatement! Keep reading for 15 reasons I can't wait to wave goodbye to Summer break.
How Coaching My Son's Soccer Team Made Me a Better Person (and Mom)
Last Fall, my son's U6 soccer team was in need of parent volunteers to coach. Right after I read the email from the director asking for any takers, I knew in my gut I needed to do it. I played soccer all throughout college and had a pretty free weekend schedule at the time, so I felt almost obligated to say yes. Being a sports mom was about to be taken to a different level, and honestly, I was kind of dreading it. I had coached in the past, but taking on kids (and their very passionate parents) was a whole new ball game.
When I told my son the news, he beamed. So, despite the fact that I wasn't looking forward to coaching, I put a big and enthusiastic smile on my face for him. As I walked onto the field for our very first practice, I introduced myself to my group of mostly nervous 5-year-olds. During our warmup, we stretched together, and I showed them how to dribble the soccer ball and play Shark. It loosened them up a little, but I could tell they were still a little apprehensive about the game of soccer, and even their coach.
There were times I almost threw in the towel, but I knew I couldn't do that. Those kids never gave up, which inspired me to never give up on them.
When the whistle blew to signal the start of our first game, things weren't much better. A couple of kids looked petrified to even set foot on the field, while others stood like scarecrows in the grass as the other team kept kicking the ball into the back of our net. "This sucks," I thought. At halftime, one of the youngest kids came up to me and said, "Coach, I'm standing by you because I'm very nervous. I don't want to get hurt." Oh, this boy had my heart. "Don't worry," I said. "If you get knocked down, it'll be OK. Just pop back up and you'll see that it didn't hurt."
During the second half, that adorable little boy got into the pack of wild 5-year-olds. He did fall, and then he got right back up. I applauded him like crazy, adrenaline suddenly shooting through me. "I can make a difference in this kid's life," I thought. From that moment on, I began to do my best for them, which started with me changing my negative attitude about coaching. I realized that it didn't suck at all. I was lucky to spend this extra time with my son and to give these kids my undivided attention a few times a week. Yes, we lost that first game (that team ended up being the best in the league), but I knew that I needed to be there every weekend for my little soccer players.
On the day of our last game, we had to play the good team again. I was a little scared knowing what happened last time, but my players didn't even remember how awesome the other team was. And despite the fact that we were down 2-0 within the first five minutes of that game, our team ended up pulling through. We won! We beat the best team! I couldn't believe it. My kids had the heart to keep going, to not be intimidated by something that scared them, and to always try their best. They were my little heroes.
Coaching 5-year-olds isn't easy. There were times I almost lost my patience and threw in the towel, but I knew I couldn't do that. Those kids never gave up, which inspired me to never give up on them. They reminded me that if you fall - just like that nervous little boy during our first game - you can always get back up and keep going. They also taught me that I (and you) can make a difference in their lives, no matter how big or small my role. Gestures don't have to be grand, and volunteering doesn't have to be every single day - as long as you show up for them, they'll show up for you.
I hope my players will always remember me as their first coach, because I will always remember the lessons they taught me. So moms, if you're contemplating coaching your child's sports team, do it. You'll get much more out of it than you might expect. And the memories you'll share with your child and those kids? Well, those will last a lifetime.
How I Survived the Hell That Is Exclusive Pumping and How You Can Too
I knew the facts: most new mothers struggle to feed their newborns in the beginning. But there's more at play than just your milk not coming in. Manually squeezing out colostrum is kind of like working with a lip pimple that makes you squirm with each pinch, except when you're yanking at the nipple in a hospital setting, looking up at your partner for some sort of head nod to indicate that your technique looks right - as if they'd know! - the whole thing is just that much more stressful.
Getting my lanky 22 1/2-inch-long daughter to latch on days one, two, three, and beyond was more than just a struggle, though. She'd arch her back and flail her head left and right, occasionally latching. Then she'd suck with the intensity of a Dyson vacuum, at which point I'd gasp, hold my breath, and shut my eyes. Just get to 10 seconds. One . . . two . . . three . . . Then I'd yank her off and wipe my tears.
Football hold. Cradle hold. Crossover hold. Nipple shield. Boppy. Breast friend. The tools and techniques changed hourly, but our dance always ended the same. I'd count to 10, yank her off, and we'd both cry, but for different reasons. Then I'd find my breast pump and shove my battered nipples into the plastic tubes of misery and jump with each tug, occasionally pumping each boob separately in order to nurse one back to health.
I saw two lactation specialists and a dermatologist - skin infections on the nipple or areola are occasionally the culprit - and everyone came up baffled as to why it was so wildly painful when my little gal nursed. There was no tongue tie and no infection. Just a lot of experts shrugging their shoulders saying variations of, "It should not be this painful," or, "It really should have gotten easier for you by now," and, "I'm really surprised these small cuts haven't healed."
Me and you both.
With my daughter's body weight on a continued dip, I followed a lactation specialist's advice and started pumping. Exclusively. Unlike "regular" moms who typically nurse at the boob and only pump to either store milk, relieve pressure, or make a bottle so someone else can handle a feeding, I was only going to pump. And given the relationship I'd already developed with my pump - I found it equally as painful as nursing, except with the pump, I was in control of the pain - I knew I needed to change some things.
My holy lactation specialist told me that for my own sanity, I should only pump eight times a day for 20 minutes max. I had been pumping 10 to 12 times a day for 30 minutes at a time to build my supply, which goes against the advice you read online, but my letdown wasn't happening until about 20 minutes in. So I had to pump for 30 minutes in order to collect anything worth pouring into a bottle.
The first few months of exclusive pumping felt like nothing short of house arrest. Day and night bled into each other. I spent my time oscillating between feeding my daughter with a bottle and being strapped into my hospital-grade Spectra S2 breast pump, connected to the wall by a six-foot-long power cord with no give. Pumping the prescribed eight times a day for my needed 30 minutes meant 240 minutes - that's four hours - and that didn't include bottle making, bottle cleanup, or the days when I had to pump one boob at a time (so an hour) because of a clogged duct.
While my journey of becoming my daughter's number one milk supplier was less than traditional (I cannot tell you how many mothers would dip their chins at me when I told them I was exclusively pumping and say, "Oh my God, I could never do that"), I'm almost six months in and have a better understanding of what really works for me.
If you're playing around with the idea of EPing, here are a few things that might help you along the way.

12 Reasons the Willow Pump Is More Than Worth the Price Tag
Pumping is one of the worst parts of parenting, but there's a new pump that is making the annoying task infinitely better. The Willow pump was introduced late last year and is already getting rave reviews from moms, including Nicole Phelps and - spoiler alert! - myself.
I had to know what all the fuss was about and whether Willow was really all that different from the "hands-free" pump I'd been using since 2013. The company kindly sent me their product to review, and after two sessions, I put away my old pump for good and started exclusively using Willow. It more than lives up to the hype, and here's why.

I'm Dreading Sending My Kids Back to School For 1 Very Specific Reason
My kids don't start school again until after Labor Day, and I already have the back-to-school blues. As a mother who works from home, I get much less accomplished during the Summer months. Deadlines are barely met. My kids fight hourly, which means I spend an ample amount of my time serving as a referee. And they eat an obscene amount of junk food. Did my kids start driving me crazy on the second day of Summer? Yes, but still, I don't want the summertime madness to end. The freedom that this time of year gives me is something I'm really not ready to give up yet.
School and all its activities is coming soon. Between homework, soccer, dance, and graduate school for me, our unstructured free time together is limited.
I adore the fact that the kids are home and on no particular schedule in the Summer. Our mornings are relaxed and stress-free. We move at our own pace. My son plays Legos on his bedroom floor while my daughter colors at the kitchen table. Usually ("usually" being the key word there), the kids let me sip (OK, inhale) my coffee on the couch while catching up on work. I don't have to shove breakfast down their throats and throw clothes on their bodies while in a huge hurry, either. There's no clock to beat or school bus to catch. The fact that my kids and I don't have to rush out the door, oftentimes without our teeth brushed, is glorious.
And the rest of our days can be spent however we want, too. At ages 6 and 4, I know that my children have plenty of years ahead of them for camps and organized activities, so for now, it's all about lounging around our home. They play in the yard, swim in the neighbor's pool, and catch fireflies. They spend their Summer days getting dirty outside and their Summer nights keeping cool in the air-conditioning. They love it, and so do I.
Because we have a low-key schedule during the week, we've been able to go exploring on the weekends. If we were overscheduled, I know that I'd feel too stressed to plan little getaways and day trips, but nope, we're making the most out of every single weekend we have (think lakes and campfires and s'mores). It's a joy to watch my kids at this age because I know that this freedom won't last forever - quite possibly not even another Summer. School and all its activities is coming soon. Between homework, soccer, dance, and graduate school for me, our unstructured free time together is limited.
So, despite the fact that my kids drive me crazy sometimes, I'm soaking it all in - the bickering, the staying up too late, the eating too much junk food - because I know that the older they get, the busier their schedules will become and the less time they'll want to spend with good ol' mom. For these last few weeks of Summer, I'll be relishing our freedom. After all, it could be the last one like it.

The line includes costumes like Winifred, Sarah, and Mary Sanderson, plus Billy Butcherson, and an array of decor, like mugs, stemless glasses, and wall art. US-Based Airlines Ranked From Worst to Best
It's taken me a lot of years to get to the point where I feel loyal to specific airlines. In the past, I always went with whatever was the cheapest and best fit my schedule. While I still do that to an extent, I also try to stick with the same one or two airlines when I fly domestic, because I've flown with them enough to feel like they've really earned my business. I've also spent enough time on airlines and had not-so-great experiences to not waste my time with them anymore.
I've taken stock of all my flying experiences to put together a definitive ranking of all the US-based airlines. My absolute favorite has been the same for as long as I've been traveling, but the ones in the middle have all changed around over the years. Keep reading to see where my favorites fall - and yours, for that matter.

You Can Stay in the Real-Life Villa From Under the Tuscan Sun - No Renovations Required
Looking to reinvent your life by running away to Tuscany and buying a dilapidated villa on the spot? Well, even if you're searching for something a touch more low-key, you can live out that fantasy by staying in the real-life villa at the center of 2003's Under the Tuscan Sun. The house has since undergone a discernible renovation - presumably not done by Diane Lane - and it is currently available for rent through Luxury Retreats.
Located in Cortona, Italy, the stunning Villa Laura, named Villa Bramasole in the movie, features 10 bedrooms, lush gardens, a wine cellar, and a pool. Then, of course, there are those countryside views that are enough to make you consider uprooting your life and moving to Italy. With enough room to host 20 guests, however, Villa Laura is not entirely wallet-friendly, as the nightly rate ranges from $2,385 to $4,090, depending on the season.
If Under the Tuscan Sun is still your go-to pick-me-up flick, or you have a Pinterest board dedicated to your dream Italian getaway, then maybe it's time to round up some friends and head to Villa Laura. At least it'll already be nice and renovated when you get there, right?

5 Harry Potter Secrets You Definitely Didn't Know . . . Until Now
Though she may seem like a muggle, J.K. Rowling is definitely magical. A former waitress without any formal training in creative writing, the author of the Harry Potter series created a world where anything (except maybe Snape investing in decent shampoo) is possible.
There is a book that will excite fans worldwide: an in-depth bibliography about the author's literary journey. JK Rowling: A Bibliography 1997-2013 by Philip Errington is so detailed that Rowling described it as "slavishly thorough and somewhat mind-boggling." Basically, you should be happier than Hagrid in an exotic pet store at this news.
The bibliography, which follows Rowling throughout the process of penning each entire Harry Potter book, is a veritable Diagon Alley of previously unknown facts about the series. If you don't have time to read it to find out all of the secrets, don't worry - you can check out this list for a few that even Hermione wouldn't know.

The Unexpected Health Risk of Having Unprotected Anal Sex
Anal sex can be pleasurable for everyone involved, but there are health risks to consider - as with any form of unprotected sex. One of the biggest concerns that comes with backdoor play is, unexpectedly, HPV. The human papillomavirus is most well-known for causing cervical cancer and can be prevented through pap smear screenings and the HPV vaccine. However, an HPV infection can make someone more prone to developing anal cancer.
"Unfortunately, HPV can also be transmitted to the anus through anal intercourse and cause cancer there," San Diego-based gynecologist Christine Sterling told POPSUGAR. Dr. Sterling added that the risk is even higher because routine screenings are not given for anal cancers.
According to the American Cancer Society, "Women with a history of cervical cancer (or pre-cancer) have an increased risk of anal cancer." It's not the anal warts themselves that cause cancer; there are over 150 subtypes of HPV, and one that is most likely to cause anal cancer is HPV-16.
Although HPV can be passed on during sexual activity (including oral sex), the virus can also be spread by skin-to-skin contact with an infected area. It's also possible for an HPV infection to spread from the genitals to the anus. To lower your chances of becoming infected with HPV, the CDC recommends getting vaccinated, getting routine screenings for cervical cancer, using latex condoms, and being in a "mutually monogamous relationship" (but we acknowledge that responsible sex goes beyond your relationship status).
If you're engaging in anal sex, be sure to use plenty of lube (as the anus doesn't self-lubricate), clean any involved parts before engaging in other sexual activity (such as oral or vaginal sex), and use contraception and/or protection.
This Michael Jackson Synchronized Swimming Routine Is SO Good, It Almost Got a Perfect Score
At the 2012 Summer Olympics, Russian athletes Natalia Ishchenko and Svetlana Romashina paid tribute to the King of Pop in their synchronized swimming routine, and it was so iconic, we're bringing it back for good measure. The duet performed to Michael Jackson's hit "They Don't Care About Us" for their technical routine at the games in London, and they left judges in awe over their electric moves. Natalia and Svetlana were perfectly in sync, scoring a 98.200 on their choreographed performance and eventually taking home the gold medal.
The second the women dive into the water and the music starts, their energy levels are on a permanent high. Between their fierce kicks and rapid underwater twirls, it's safe to assume they drew some inspiration from Michael's own dance moves before coming up with this routine. We're fully aware that it's been a few years since this competition was making headlines, but we're taking it as motivation to kick our in-pool workouts up a notch this Summer. Check out the video above, and prepare to be amazed.

4 Signs Your Chronic Stress Is Actually a Symptom of Adrenal Fatigue
There's a good chance you've never heard the words "adrenal fatigue" until just now, but it's probably not the first time you've dealt with serious stress. Carolyn Mein and Merethe Najjar at YourTango explain how chronic stress may actually be due to our body's overactive flight-or-fight response.
Tired of feeling burned out?
Adrenal fatigue symptoms can look a lot like the signs of chronic stress. So how can you tell the difference, and what is adrenal fatigue exactly?
Adrenal fatigue is a stress-related condition where your adrenal glands - the ones that control your "fight or flight" response - never shut off, and as a result, your body feels drained from the chronic stress it's experiencing.
According to Dr. Carolyn Mein, adrenal fatigue is very common. Our brains, which developed over millennia of fighting battles and working hard to survive in the wilderness, are completely lost when it comes to dealing with the stressors of our modern-day lives, so our "fight or flight" response is triggered constantly.
What's amazing is that this primal instinct still works as well today as it did thousands of years ago. But the problem is your animalistic brain doesn't understand the difference between getting chased down by tigers and having to finish that big project for your business meeting with the boss on Friday.
So whether you've just choked on the microphone in a room full of people or have someone threatening you, your brain gives your adrenal glands the exact same order: Save me! The resulting panic that can flood your system over a minor issue in your personal life feels exactly the same to your brain as the impending doom of an attack.
This back-and-forth of stress hormones can send your adrenal glands into high gear, constantly readying you for the next big life or death situation - and resulting in chronic stress.
But over time, this response can essentially burn itself out and leave you in the "on" position, since your brain doesn't know the difference between when it should be in high-adrenaline fear mode or the fact that you got embarrassed in a crowd of people.
And since adrenal glands are some of the strongest in the body, says Dr. Mein, they begin draining energy from other parts of your body when they're overworked. This is what leaves you feeling constantly stressed and exhausted.
Here are four signs that your chronic stress and exhaustion might actually be symptoms of adrenal fatigue:
1. You can't fall asleep, even though you're exhausted.
Even though you're tired literally all. the. time, you find it difficult to fall asleep (and stay asleep!). Whether it's racing thoughts or your body feels wired with adrenaline, you simply can't unwind enough to go to bed and get the rest your body desperately needs.
2. Your immune system is down.
Does it seem like you're always battling a cold or your lymph nodes are swollen? All of this emotional and mental fatigue, plus a lack of sleep, can wreak havoc on your immune system, making it easier for you to get sick.
3. You crave salty foods.
Your adrenal glands produce a steroid called aldosterone, and aldosterone's job is to help regulate your body's sodium levels. So if you crave salty foods often, it could be a sign your sodium is low as a result of adrenal fatigue.
4. You shut down when you're overwhelmed.
If your stress and exhaustion levels are through the roof constantly, at some point, your mind and body may have had enough. As a result, you might simply shut down when you have to deal with any stress at all and become detached or non-reactive.
Stress is a constant in life, but if your chronic stress is causing symptoms of adrenal fatigue, it's time to take action.
How your body reacts to and deals with adrenal fatigue depends on your personal body "type," says Dr. Mein, and so what works for one person's body type may not specifically work for the others (there are 25 body types total).

Allison Made This 1 Tweak to Her Diet and It Completely Transformed Her Butt
Allison Murphy always had a hard time gaining weight and maintaining it, regardless of what she ate. "As I got older, I began to despise how long and lanky I was," Allison told POPSUGAR. She realized that working out (something she already loved to do) would give her body more of a shape by adding muscle mass - and that's exactly what she did. Continue reading to learn exactly how Allison transformed her butt.
How Her Diet Changed
Instead of counting calories and obsessing over her diet, Allison said she focused on eating clean and listening to her body's hunger cues. "My meals often consist of all vegetables (there's not one I don't like), rice or quinoa, beans, lentils, and chicken or fish," Allison said. In order to maintain her weight and physique, Allison had to increase the amount of food she was eating, specifically her protein intake, drinking plant-based protein shakes with peanut butter.
The Workout She Did For a Bigger Butt
Allison said that she was very active growing up, participating in activities like dance, horseback riding, and running. "I never really knew much about working out as far as weight training was concerned," Allison explained. Once she started working with her personal trainer, Ryan Read, her knowledge about weightlifting expanded. "When I started, I could only lift or squat the bar by itself, but you've got to start somewhere!" Although her strength was minimal, she began to lift weights three to fives times a week, eventually impressing herself with the progress she had made.
The Workout She Stopped Doing
Allison cut back on the amount of cardio she was doing because it caused her to lose too much weight and muscle mass. Instead, she began to do 15 to 20 minutes of cardio on the StairMaster or walks around her neighborhood a few times a week. She credits Ryan with showing her "the dos and don'ts, as well as certain routines to alter my body in the ways I wanted." As far as her results, Allison said, "The results are addicting; lifting heavier and feeling stronger is one of the most rewarding feelings around."
This Dietitian Explains Why You Should NEVER Eat Nonfat Cheese
If you're trying to lose weight, then you're probably hyperaware of the calories of your favorite foods. Cheese, while delicious and savory and good melted on top of just about anything, is a high-fat, high-calorie food that you may want to eat in moderation. Instead of giving up cheese altogether, many people opt for the "lighter" option in the form of nonfat cheese, especially the shredded varieties.
But while nonfat cheese is a lower-calorie option, it's totally not worth it according to Joy Bauer, MS, RDN, CDN, author of Joy's Simple Food Remedies.
"[Nonfat cheeses] taste a bit plastic and don't melt well, so they leave you feeling unsatisfied," Joy told POPSUGAR. "These aren't worth it, in my opinion." If you're unsatisfied, you're more likely to reach for more of your favorite comfort foods to fill that void which could derail your weight-loss progress.
Instead, she recommends two percent reduced-fat shredded cheeses of all flavors: part-skim mozzarella, Mexican blend, or cheddar.
"They melt beautifully, just like regular, and have the same indulgent flavor for a bit less saturated fat and fewer calories," Joy said. "And thanks to the 'shred factor,' you can sprinkle a few handfuls over an omelet, salad, burger, and more! Most varieties typically contain just 80 calories per quarter cup serving while offering up seven grams of protein."
The good news is you can totally indulge in cheese and still lose weight. If shredded cheese isn't your thing, check out our list of the other best cheeses to eat and still lose weight, including brie, feta, goat cheese, and more.
Making This 1 Change to Her Workouts Helped Jamie Lose Body Fat and Build Muscle

Unhappy with how she looked, Jamie decided to teach fewer classes and began to implement strength training into her routine. Jamie's goal wasn't to lose a ton of weight - she simply wanted to look and feel stronger. Continue reading for Jamie's full story as told to POPSUGAR.

The Worst Cheeses You Can Eat If You're Trying to Lose Weight, According to Dietitians
Let's just get one thing clear: there's no such thing as "good" or "bad" foods. Sure, there are some foods that are more nutritious for your body than others, but assigning moral value to foods is a recipe (pun intended!) for disordered eating and a poor relationship with food.
That being said, there are some foods that can help you reach your goals faster. For example, there are some cheeses that can help you reach weight-loss goals because they are low-calorie, satiating, full of vitamins, or packed with protein. On the flip side, there are some cheeses that will add some extra calories and grams of saturated fat to your daily diet, which could stall your progress or even cause you to pack on the pounds.
Keep in mind, this is mostly for people who are doing good old-fashioned calorie or macro counting, not keto, which encourages the consumption of full-fat dairy. That being said, here are the cheeses dietitians recommend avoiding if you're trying to lose weight.

I Gave Up Alcohol For 1 Week, and This Is What Happened
Ever since I was a teenager, I've worked hard and played hard. And the whole "playing hard" part typically involved alcohol. As a collegiate soccer player, our whole team celebrated with booze after a good win - or loss, for that matter. Today, after becoming a real-life adult and a mother of two, I still like to drink a couple of times a week. Wine, rum, a microbrew - you name it, I like to drink it. No, I don't stay out at bars into the wee hours of the night like I did when I was a 20-something, but from time to time, I enjoy a buzz. My husband and I will enjoy some drinks by the bonfire or with a Netflix show, or I'll overindulge when I get a night away with the girls. But the older I get, the more the alcohol negatively affects me, and the hangovers are the worst.
Yes, I really shouldn't be drinking anymore because I'm finding that it's just not worth it. I'm much more tired because the alcohol keeps me tossing and turning all night. And I almost always take my crankiness out on the kids, something I always regret. My gut protrudes much more than I'd like it to, too. And then I, of course, only want to eat greasy food. Plus, my energy level is far too low to exercise, making me feel even more sluggish. The hangovers are getting worse with my increasing age. Sometimes it only takes a couple of drinks to make my head pound the next morning. So after all of these negative side effects, I wondered . . . why do I even drink? I couldn't come up with one solid reason, so I stopped drinking for more than a week to see what happened. Here's what I found out.
I Have Energy Like a 20-Something Again
The biggest difference I found after giving up all alcohol for one week is my boost in energy. I pop out of bed in the morning and get my workout in as soon as possible (after a quick cup of joe, of course). My day starts with a jolt, and I'm charged for the rest of the day. I don't feel lethargic, needing that midday coffee or nap, either. I push through all day, crossing things off of my to-do list. And most importantly, I have energy for my small kids, something I didn't always have before. Now I don't have that guilt looming over my head if I'm too tired to play soccer with my son. Instead, I bounce up and kick the ball around with him in the backyard.
I Can Finally Wear That Slinky Dress Again
Not that this should matter, but an added perk to giving up alcohol is that I have dropped a couple of pounds. A no-brainer, yes, but I always wondered if the number on the scale would drop if I stopped drinking altogether. Nearing the end of my alcohol-free week, I grabbed a slinky dress for a date night that I hadn't felt comfortable wearing, and to my surprise, I rocked it with confidence. My bloating stomach settled down, and I no longer craved that greasy food like I used to. Instead, I grabbed an apple or handful of almonds rather than a double cheeseburger and fries. I've been happy to see those pounds drop because those extra pounds just weighed me down.
I Wake Up With a Smile Painted Across My Face
Honestly, the biggest perk I've found since giving up alcohol has been my happiness. Cheesy, but true. On the mornings after I drank too many glasses of wine or bottles of beer, I'd wake up feeling regretful. I'd take my crankiness and tiredness out on my family, but in reality, I just felt bad about myself. But now, I get out of bed and smile at my children. I hug them tight and we start our days off right, something I should have been doing all along.
Final Thoughts
Will I give up alcohol forever? No. Drinking during the week just because won't happen anymore, but if I'm celebrating a loved one or at the lake, then I may crack open a nice cold beer. But I have made up my mind to prohibit all hard liquor and only have a couple of light beers or a glass of wine on occasion. Feeling like crap the next day and ruining everyone's day just isn't worth it to me. I've learned that I can "play hard" by working out and living spontaneously. Playing hard doesn't have to look like unwinding with alcohol. I look forward to living life hard and waking up with a smile on my face because that's what my family and I deserve.

Vegans and Vegetarians, Listen Up: Here's How to Do a Plant-Based Keto Diet
Going keto is more than just a diet trend; it's a lifestyle transformation that has helped people lose weight, gain more energy, lower blood sugar levels, and fight inflammation. The keto diet is a high-fat, moderate-protein, super low-carb diet that puts your body into a state of ketosis wherein your body burns fat instead of carbs for energy. Although each person's specific macronutrient breakdown varies, it's generally about 80 percent fat, 15 percent protein, and five percent carbs.
But while countless people have found success on the keto diet, it can be quite limiting for people who are vegetarian or vegan. Since the diet is so low-carb - less than 50 grams a day - many vegan staples, such as quinoa, brown rice, and sprouted grain bread, are out. Although it's difficult, it is possible for people who eschew animal products to successfully do the keto diet. Our friends at Virta Health, a weight-loss clinic that helps treat type 2 diabetes patients with a ketogenic diet, outlined some key pointers for vegans and vegetarians who are interested in trying the keto diet.
As always, be sure to consult with your doctor or registered dietitian before embarking on any major dietary changes. The keto diet, especially a plant-based keto diet, should be done under medical supervision.
This Doctor Explains Why Vegetarians Should Do the Keto Diet
If you follow any keto lovers on Instagram, then you're probably bombarded with mouthwatering photos of bunless burgers and chicken wings and bacon-wrapped everything. And while meat does play a role in the keto diet, it doesn't have to be the diet's foundation. In fact, it's totally possible to do the keto diet without eating meat.
The keto diet, which is high fat, moderate protein, and super low carb, has helped countless people lose weight and totally transform their lives. Although it's a little more difficult, it's totally possible for vegetarians and vegans to go keto. Especially for vegetarian who still consume eggs and dairy (lacto-ovo vegetarians) - full-fat dairy is a staple of the keto diet.
But not only is the keto diet doable for vegetarians, it's actually advised for those who are diabetic or have metabolic syndrome, which is a cluster of conditions that include high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess abdominal fat, and increased cholesterol levels.
"A well-formulated ketogenic diet has been demonstrated to be very effective in reversing type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome," Steve Phinney, MD, PhD, chief medical officer at Virta Health, told POPSUGAR. "These conditions are increasingly common, even in vegetarians."
Dr. Phinney and his colleagues treat type 2 diabetes patients with the keto diet at the Virta Clinic. Patients who followed a keto diet under medical supervision at the Virta Clinic saw a reduction in blood sugar levels, heart disease risk factors, fatty liver, and less dependency on medications. They also had lower markers for inflammation.
Since vegetarians can also get heart disease, fatty liver, diabetes, and have inflammation, the keto diet could be helpful to lose weight and get their chronic conditions, including type 2 diabetes, under control. And even though many people assume the keto diet is all meat and cheese, it's actually incredibly veggie-heavy, which works out well for vegetarians.
"We typically instruct our patients to have four to five servings of non-starchy vegetables per day as part of a well-formulated ketogenic diet," Dr. Phinney explained. "While this seems like a lot to some of our omnivore patients, its just a normal day for a vegetarian."
Of course, be sure to speak to your doctor and other healthcare providers before making any major dietary changes, including going on the keto diet.
Want a Celebrity's Body? Here's Why Tracy Anderson Will Tell You That "It Can't Happen"
If you had five minutes to speak with a celebrity trainer, the first question many of us are probably dying to ask is how to get X's body. I mean, why wouldn't we want to know the fitness secrets of their star-studded clientele? Though you may be able to score some tips and tricks depending on who you talk to, one person who'll defer you to her publicist instead is Tracy Anderson, longtime friend and business partner of Gwyneth Paltrow and the badass woman behind her self-titled Method. POPSUGAR had the opportunity to meet with Tracy before she led a dance-cardio class for G. Sport Sessions, a fitness experience by Westin Hotels and Goop, and she made a comment that made us love her even more.
Speaking as her publicist: "You can ask [Tracy] how to get Jennifer Lopez's butt in three moves, you can ask her how to get Gwyneth Paltrow's legs in three moves, but she's going to keep telling you it can't happen," Tracy said.
To be clear, Tracy doesn't avoid these kinds of questions because she selfishly wants to keep all her trade secrets to herself. Not only is it physically impossible to alter your body to model after someone's (at least without cosmetic procedures), she explained that she does so in hopes of shifting the conversation and promoting self-love. "If you focus on wanting to be someone else, you're going to completely miss the opportunity to be yourself," she said. "I'm going to give you the tools for that, but it has to be inwardly focused; it can't be flipping through Instagram and magazines and going, 'Look at that beautiful person, I want what they have.'"
Tracy echoed this sentiment when we asked what mantra she lives by: "I value my life, I love myself, and I want to show up for myself honestly," she shared. So if you want to take a page from her book, hold yourself accountable, be authentic, and don't forget to show yourself plenty of love.
