How to Identify Your Body Type, and Why Doing So Is About Way More Than Looks
Identifying your body type can actually be helpful in unlocking your weight-loss potential. According to Carolyn Mein at YourTango, understanding how you're built can be instrumental in achieving your fitness and weight-loss goals.
Give your body what it needs.
If you've unsuccessfully tried to shed pounds and keep looking for the best way to lose weight, you've probably tried all sorts of diets and exercise routines in the past that haven't worked. But by discovering whether you're an ectomorph, mesomorph, or endomorph body type, you can learn the best way to lose weight for yourbody so you can start seeing results faster.
The truth is, a healthy diet and exercise are just parts of your optimal health and wellness plan, not the whole thing. Your body type, whether it's ectomorph, mesomorph, or endomorph, plays a critical role.
So if you're ignoring what your specific body type needs, you're likely to have a harder time losing weight and reaching your weight-loss goals.
"Each body type gains weight and stores fat differently, which is why knowing yours can help you improve your health or even lose weight," says Dr. Carolyn Mein, a body type expert.
According to somatotype theory, the three main body types are ectomorphs, mesomorphs, or endomorphs. These "types" suggest how fat gets stored on your body and if you tend toward being lean versus being bigger or having more muscle tissue.
"Your body type is something you're born with," says Dr. Mein, "and it's determined by your dominant gland, organ, or system."
Your body type also controls your ability to gain or lose weight, in addition to affecting which diet and exercise regimens will work best.
For example, some people have no problem eating a protein-packed meal of steak and eggs every morning for breakfast, whereas others can't stomach anything more than a cup of coffee and a piece of toast.
Your food likes, dislikes, and cravings all stem from the same place: your body type.
Here's how to figure out if you're an ectomorph, mesomorph, or endomorph body type:
1. Ectomorphs
Ectomorphs are usually long and lean. These people can be incredibly lithe by nature, and often have difficulty building muscle.
If you're an ectomorph, you might even struggle with gaining weight, versus other types, since your body is great at processing carbohydrates and burning fat off quickly.
2. Mesomorphs
If you're a mesomorph, then you likely don't have an issue storing body fat, and most of your muscle is well-defined and super easy to pack on, despite the fact that you might take your naturally athletic build for granted and never step foot in a gym.
If your build puts muscle on easily and melts fat off, you're likely one of these lucky types.
3. Endomorphs
Endomorphs have quite a different problem than their ectomorphic counterparts. Endomorphs excel at storing fat in their lower body - specifically around the belly - and have trouble losing it once it's been put on.
From an evolutionary standpoint, this body type is amazing: This was the type of body that was perfect for storing fat during long periods of scarcity, which guaranteed your ability to survive droughts, harsh winters, or poor food seasons.
In the modern age, however, this type can also gain weight the quickest, which is not beneficial to man's increasingly sedentary lifestyle.
Dr. Mein has created a system of twenty-five body types - including their over or underweight counterparts - but there are significant differences between the three primary groups. Of these body types, it should be easy to figure out which one correlates to you.
Most people are actually a combination of the types, rather than just one on its own, but this can still help you figure out the method that your body needs to be at its best, whether that comes from eating better, exercising differently, or knowing which types of food you're really craving.
Because once you better understand your body's unique set of needs, you can learn to work with your body to reach your weight loss goals and improve your health.
Dr. Carolyn L. Mein is a chiropractic physician with an active practice in Rancho Santa Fe, CA, who developed the 25-body type system as a way to help her patients attain and maintain their ideal weight and energy levels by eating the foods that best support their bodies. She is also the author of Different Bodies, Different Diets. To learn more about the 25-body type system and determine your body type, visit her website.

What is a kettlebell?
We've all had this question at some point! A kettlebell is cast-iron, ball-shaped weight with a single handle. Its unique shape allows you to combine strength and flexibility training and cardio.
How heavy should I start out?
We recommend you begin with a eight-kg (18-pound) kettlebell or 12 kg if you're working just your lower body.
What are the benefits of using a kettlebell?
"Incorporating kettlebell flows into your fitness routine can help you maximize your overall fitness by allowing you to work on various fitness components all at once," said Eric Leija, senior kettlebell specialist at Onnit, also known as primal.swoledier on Instagram. "Kettlebell flowing enhances your endurance, strength, and mobility and allows you to explore different movements to keep your routine fun and challenging."
What is a kettlebell flow?
"A kettlebell flow essentially is a combination of individual kettlebell movements pieced together into a seamless 'flow' or routine," Eric said. "An example of this would be sequencing a kettlebell clean, swing, and snatch, then repeating the movements in this order for a given amount of time or repetitions."
Without further ado, here are nine kettlebell exercises to get comfortable doing.

I Haven't Eaten Dairy For 4 Years, and I've Experienced These 12 Massive Health Benefits
As a young animal lover, I stopped eating meat when I was 13 years old, and dairy was an absolute staple. I didn't think anything was wrong with it because it wasn't like the cows were being killed, right? Wrong. So wrong. It wasn't until four years ago, when I watched the documentary Vegucated, that I found out how inhumane the dairy industry is. I had no idea! Cows are artificially impregnated at an alarming rate, and after they gave birth, their babies are brutally taken away from them immediately and hooked up to a machine to give their milk to us. I was sobbing watching a farmer drag a newborn calf away from its mama while she screamed and tried to chase after it as they held her back.
I live in Vermont, where the joke is that there are more cows than people. I spoke to tons of small family farms to find out the truth. They all nodded. I was shocked that one very well-known organic farm explained, "The reason we separate the calf right away is so they don't bond. Already you can hear the moms and calves mooing to each other, and it'd be much worse if they stayed together." It made me sick. As a mother of two, my heart ached, and I felt compelled to give dairy up overnight.
Aside from feeling good about not supporting the cruel dairy industry, I had no idea how dramatically my life would improve over the past four years. Here are the amazing health benefits I experienced after going dairy-free.
The 1 Full-Body Strength-Training Move Most People Neglect, According to This Trainer

Ready to meet an all-around smart exercise that offers a laundry list of amazing benefits? Great, let's talk about the viking press, a versatile move that Westin's Global Run Concierge Chris Heuisler says is one people shouldn't neglect. The viking press is essentially a kneeling, twisted-overhead press. Here are several reasons you should incorporate it into your workouts, according to Chris:
- It works your butt and core (especially your external obliques).
- It naturally tones your shoulders.
- It moves you transversely.
- It elevates your heart rate.
Sounds awesome, right? Most of your power comes from the transverse (horizontal) plane, making rotational movements especially important in your workouts. For example, a straight jab doesn't generate as much power as a hook would because it doesn't generate as much momentum. But according to Chris, "We don't move like that anymore. If you've ever seen kids move, what they're not doing is what we're doing every day, which is going in a straight path. That's actually to our disadvantage."
The viking press helps combat that as it calls for a complete rotation and lengthens your entire body. "I'm teaching my body how to stabilize in transverse," he told POPSUGAR. "My right glute has to connect to my core to make this work, otherwise if that's off, my stability is off. You have to have stability before you have mobility."
How to Do It
- Begin in a kneeling lunge, keeping your left leg bent in a 90-degree angle and your right leg bent perpendicular to the ground.
- Hold a dumbbell slightly in front of your chest.
- Squeeze your glute, open your hip, and rotate your body to the left side, reaching up for the ceiling.
- Come back down in a slow, controlled movement to the front.

This move can also be completed with a kettlebell by turning it upside down.
Listen Up Avocado Lovers! Here's What a Serving of Avocado Actually Looks Like
Mmm, avocado. Where do we begin? It's a great addition to toast and smoothies, and in our opinion, it goes well with just about anything. As much as we love avocado, though, there is such a thing as eating too much of it in a day. Sigh.
According to RDRx Nutrition founder Haley Hughes, MS, RD, CDE, "The serving size for an avocado has been recognized now as one-third [of a medium avocado]." One-third of a medium avocado contains about 80 calories, and according to Haley, most people don't need to eat an entire avocado in a single day. Although avocados are high in monounsaturated fats, the "good fats," you can still have too much fat in a day, which "may lead to weight gain since fats are higher in calories," Haley said.
On average, dietary fat intake for adults should make up no more than 20 to 35 percent of their total daily calories. To calculate how much fat you should be eating in a day, multiply the total number of calories you need in a day by 0.20 and 0.35. For example, if you need 1,850 calories a day, 370-647.5 of those calories should come from fat.
If you do the math, eating one medium-sized avocado comes out to around 240 calories. If you only consume fat from an avocado, you're well below the recommended daily limit for a 1,850-calorie diet. But before you dismiss everything we've explained and eat three avocados in one sitting, you need to take into account the rest of your dietary fat from foods, like butter, milk, cheese, and fish. Fat from avocados is healthier than saturated fats found in fried foods, baked goods, and pizza (all of that is fine in moderation), but if you're trying to lose weight or maintain your current weight, it's important to know how much fat you're consuming in general.
As a reminder, these are just general guidelines and will vary from person to person. For instance, someone on the keto diet will need to consume more fats than someone who isn't on keto. Because of this, we always advise speaking with your doctor and/or a registered dietitian to devise a nutritional plan specific to your needs.
Considering a Wellness Retreat? 6 Reasons You Should Book It ASAP
When I was blessed with the opportunity to go on a wellness vacation with my best friend, I hopped at the chance. We boarded the plane from Michigan and flew to Hilton Head Health in the charming state of South Carolina. As the taxi driver drove us in, part of me wished we were going on a regular beach vacation where we sipped fancy cocktails and ate greasy food, instead of a health getaway where fitness instructors would tell us to hold our planks longer.
Before the wellness trip, I was reasonably healthy. I'd do my best to eat well and work out during the week, but the weekends were another story. I'd splurge on drinks, fatty foods, and plenty of desserts. I come from a family that absolutely loves to eat, and I had no idea what portion control meant.
While I was curious and excited about the wellness trip, I was downright nervous, too. Now that I'm back to regular life, I can firmly say that it was a life-changing experience. If you're planning to take a trip soon, here are a few reasons you may want to consider a health vacation!
- The team environment is incredibly motivating. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere at our resort was warm and welcoming. Guests walked around sweaty and smiling - proud of themselves for kicking ass and eating well. The staff embraced us as though it was the fifth time we had visited, almost like we were family. During the classes, we all high-fived each other regardless of where we were in our healthy journey.
- There are so many fitness classes, you'll have no excuse. My friend and I tried everything: weight training, yoga, pool aerobics, Tabata, treading, Pilates, and even just learning how to properly stretch. These fitness classes revitalized my body and rejuvenated my soul.
- The food? It's good. Upon our first meal, I sat stunned in the resort's elegant dining room. Not only was my Asian rice bowl delicious, but it was filling, too. All of the meals were freshly prepared, tasty, and satisfying. I grew a new understanding about how much food I should actually be eating for my body type. We weren't denied anything, either. It wasn't a "no-carb" kitchen where all the food was raw. We could eat healthy snacks throughout the day and even enjoy the occasional dessert. I finally learned how to enjoy the right amount of food that my body needed to use for fuel . . . a crazy idea called portion control.
- Cooking classes are also on the menu. The health resort offered cooking classes so we could learn how to prepare the healthy meals in the comfort of our own homes. I've even tried some of the recipes in my own kitchen, and they taste just as good as the head chef said they would.
- This is the type of vacation that leaves you energized. That old saying "I need a vacation from my vacation"? Yeah, we didn't feel that way. Throughout our time on our wellness vacation, we rented bicycles and breathed in the beautiful island. Instead of letting the sun burn us all day while we sipped on sugary cocktails, we enjoyed the beach for a couple short hours while snacking on almonds. It wasn't the picture of vacations in the past, but it sure was much healthier and even more enjoyable.
- The learning doesn't stop when you leave. Since we've been home, my best friend and I text each other pictures of our meals - keeping each other in check. We talk about our weekly workout plans and encourage each other just like the staff did at Hilton Head Health.
Our life-changing wellness vacation jump-started my health and fitness routine and made me realize that life is too short to not take care of my body. I've learned that vacations don't have to be filled with drinks, the sun, too much food, and soaking up every single experience you can - coming home with a new, healthy mindset means so much more. So if you are starting to plan an exciting vacation, consider indulging in one that your mind and body will thank you for.
Think Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez's Vacation Pics Are Hot? Wait Until You See Their Yacht Workout
Jennifer Lopez has always been in amazing shape, as evidenced by her white-hot bikini pics and her enviable, rock-hard abs. Turns out, the 49-year-old doesn't sleep on her fitness routine, even on vacation.
J Lo cranked out some pull-ups on a yacht off the Amalfi Coast per boyfriend Alex Rodriguez's Instagram Story on Aug. 9. The video showed the Grammy-nominated singer using a band to assist her pull-ups while Cardi B's "I Like It" played in the background. She rocked a pair of Niyama Sol leggings, which ARod also tagged in the video.
Not to be outdone, A-Rod added a photo of his chiseled shoulders and back while he did his own set of pull-ups shirtless. He hashtagged this photo #summersoldiers, and there's no denying they're putting in work, even on their vacation! They've been enjoying a romantic vacation all throughout Italy including stops in Capri and an impromptu performance of "Let's Get Loud."
As if J Lo and ARod weren't couple goals enough already, their vacation workouts make us want to hit the gym ASAP!

I Ate Vegan For a Week, and Here's Why Eating Plant-Based Is Not For Me
I love a good challenge! When it comes to improving my health, I love to try new things and see how my body responds. When I saw everybody raving about going vegan, I knew it was time to try eating a plant-based diet - at least for a week. Many people who go vegan or eat more plant-based diets say that they feel better than ever and lose some weight. Some also report their energy levels skyrocket. Why wouldn't I want to try it?
Just seven days - how difficult could that be? No dairy, no meat, no honey, no eggs. Even though I eat meat every single day, I felt confident I would be successful, and I was excited to try eating in a new way. Who knows? Maybe I'd go through some out-of-body experience that would transform my life. Or maybe I'd give up halfway through. Since I was so focused on food for seven days, I thought it best to show you how I fueled myself daily. Here what went down each day.

I Consumed Fresh Ginger Every Day For 1 Week, and These Were the Results
I've always loved the flavor of ginger. Spicy and pungent, it is delicious in tea form and almost completely cuts the bitterness of vegetables in fresh juices and smoothies (adding ginger is basically the only way I can stomach beets in my juices). And while I've always known it's frequently used to aid digestion, I will humbly admit I had no idea the spice boasts such a sprawling list of medicinal benefits. The experts say ginger root is a stellar anti-inflammatory, improves heart health, eases nausea and motion sickness, helps expel free radicals from the body, and is even linked with lowering cholesterol.
If this spicy root has this much power, I just had to test it out. I decided to consume fresh ginger every day for seven days. While there are many ways to consume it, I opted to head straight to my juicer each morning for a ginger and lemon shot and continued my ritual with a cup of homemade ginger tea at night. Whipping up the tea is easy; you simply pour a cup of boiling water over a hunk of raw ginger and let it sit for a few minutes.
I almost immediately noticed its digestive powers.
I'll be totally candid here: when it comes to bathroom habits, I've never been regular. Switching to a healthier diet certainly helped (healthier meaning I will never give up cheese), but even my favorite cruciferous vegetables can be triggers for cases of all-day bloating. The effect of fresh ginger was quick - by the third day, I was going to the bathroom at the same time every morning like clockwork. I also noticed a significant reduction in after-dinner bloating when finishing my meal (broccoli and all!) with a cup of ginger tea.
It eased my muscle pain post-workout.
I'm a huge advocate of the benefits of weight training for women, and I tend to push myself pretty hard in the gym. By midweek, I noticed that my onset soreness, while still present, felt noticeably milder than usual. I'm a firm believer in utilizing all-natural remedies in lieu of medication whenever possible. I use peppermint oil for headaches and drink raw honey when I have a sore throat. But for my workouts, I typically take two anti-inflammatory pills each morning to help ease the pain, and I can totally get behind the idea of drinking ginger instead.
I craved my evening tea.
Even for someone who loves the flavor, my morning shot was a tad too pungent for my taste. My juicer recommended adding other spices like turmeric, and in the future, I would, but I wanted to give this an accurate evaluation. But my homemade tea? Now that was a little treat I looked forward to each evening. In fact, as an added benefit, it even helped cut any late-night snack cravings.
Will I keep going?
While I'm not sure I will continue taking it in pure shot form, I definitely plan on ending my days with the tea. I couldn't believe how simple (and, frankly, how cheap) it was to make each evening, considering the holistic benefits I felt almost immediately. As I mentioned, drinking it right before bed reduced my urge to reach for a midnight snack, and if the small but mighty root continues to help my digestion and reduce post-workout pain, count me in. It might be summertime, but I can't wait to enjoy the scratch-made ginger tea in the colder months (with a little honey. . . maybe even bourbon, too).
On a Low-Carb Diet? Here's a Full Week of Meal Ideas
When it comes to cutting down your carbs, it can be a struggle to feel full after your meals, especially if you're craving that crunch of bread or a bite of pasta. But you don't have to go hungry just because your carbs are restricted. Protein and fats are just as important in your diet because they provide lasting energy to keep you feeling full and satiated after a meal, and it's easy to load up if you plan in advance. So if you're on the keto diet or just trying to eat fewer carbs, here's an easy-to-follow weekly meal plan for when you need to shake things up.
Why Pairing Some Cheese With Your Wine Actually Protects Your Teeth
The thought of happy hour might make you smile, but wine can cause some serious damage to your pearly whites. Along with coffee and soda, wine is one of the main beverages that cause stains and enamel erosion. While you might immediately think of red wine when you think of damaging alcohols, that Merlot isn't leading to the worst long-term damage - though it may be the source of a mouthful of embarrassing red teeth.
"Red wine is likely to leave dark stains or films on the teeth, staining them quickly," explains Tatiana Herzog, DDS, DICOI, medical adviser for Zwivel and creator of the Dr Herzog Smile Charcoal Toothpaste. "White wine, on the other hand, has a higher acid content. The acid in the wine slowly dissolves the enamel (the white outer layer of the tooth), causing the dentin (the second yellow layer of the tooth) to shine through. This is a more permanent stain caused by the slow erosion of the enamel."
In addition to simple white wine, here are also other types of wines you should be mindful of the next time you're checking out the beverage list at dinner. "Sparkling varieties of wine typically have the highest acid content causing just as much if not more staining," Dr. Herzog explained further. "The same goes for Rosé, which has a high content of acid."
Does this mean you have to give up that evening glass of white wine you've looked forward to all day? Nope! This is especially true if you're willing to enjoy a certain snack along with your Chardonnay.
"Eating cheese while drinking wine can help to neutralize the acidity in wines, protecting the enamel from further erosion," says Dr. Herzog. "Brushing your teeth with a high fluoride toothpaste 30 minutes before drinking can help to combat stains, but do not brush immediately after sipping on wine as this can cause the enamel that has softened from the acid to be brushed away quicker."
Wine and cheese? Don't mind if we do!
Why Doing a Boudoir Photo Shoot in Lingerie Was the Ultimate Form of Self-Care For Me
I've spent most of my life battling body-image issues and insecurities about my figure. I'm 5'1 and have a naturally stocky build with broad shoulders. One ex-boyfriend and his entire family used to call me Stumps because of my "big thighs." He also once told me I look like a running back because I'm so short and stout. I'm sure you can imagine how I wasn't too pleased to receive that kind of feedback from a guy who was supposed to be my greatest support.
Having been teased at school for many years as well, I entered my adult years with some emotional baggage. But the last few years have helped me regain my confidence, and I owe a lot of that to my dedication to fitness and clean eating.
Self-care practices also played a huge role in my growth of self-confidence and body acceptance. From meditating daily to journaling to attending wellness retreats, I've found all sorts of ways to take care of my mind as well as my body. One unexpected thing I did this year that contributed to better self-care was participate in a boudoir photo shoot.
It sounds strange, but posing in lingerie was an incredible way to heal my past wounds and feel stronger and more beautiful than ever. I worked with Tonhya Wysong, a professional photographer who created the project La Femme Forte, an initiative that's dedicated to helping women feel more confident in their bodies. This is how La Femme Forte acted as the ultimate self-care for me.
The Fitness Mantra You Can Borrow From the Notorious RBG
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg may be 85, but she still makes fitness a priority. Even though she has one of the most demanding jobs there is, Justice Ginsburg works out twice a week with her personal trainer Bryant Johnson, ACE, MFT, author of The RBG Workout and member of The Vitamin Shoppe Wellness Council.
Her workouts focus on strength and flexibility, but just because she's 85 doesn't mean they are easy - Stephen Colbert even had a tough time keeping up. And while it would be easy for Justice Ginsburg to skip her workouts, Bryant told POPSUGAR that she has a mantra that keeps her motivated.
"My mantra for the justice is to 'just show up,'" he said. "When it comes to working out, showing up is part of the battle. The justice always shows up for training and gives it her very best. One time she told me she left a White House dinner early to make it to our training session."
She's had this same work ethic for the 19 years they've been training together. She went from barely being able to do a push-up on her knees when they first started to doing 20 full push-ups in a row. She also does planks, pistol squats, leg lifts, and bench squats with a medicine ball.
"No matter what your situation is, small gains can lead to big victories," Bryant said. "The justice has faced every challenge, from fighting cancer two times to working one of the most challenging jobs there is, and she always makes time to work out and give it her all."
Justice Ginsburg is all the fitspo we need to hit the gym and crush it!
Meghan Markle Has Been Sporting This Signature Look Since Her Wedding - and We're in Love
All eyes have been on Meghan Markle this year as she becomes accustomed to her new royal life, and she's been exceeding our expectations every step of the way. Each time the Duchess of Sussex steps out with Prince Harry, she gives us a major case of outfit envy by sporting the loveliest dress and most versatile heels. Though Meghan's ensembles have ranged from floral dresses to black pantsuits, we're already seeing the newlywed develop a signature style, and it all boils down to bateau necklines.
Bateau is the fancy French word for "boat," and it's used to describe wide, high necklines that cut straight across the top along the collarbone without plunging. The silhouette is flattering, modest, and downright regal, aka the perfect fit for a duchess. Meghan has worn boat-neck dresses for multiple occasions this year, including Prince Louis's christening, her visit to Ireland, and, most notably, her wedding day, when she wowed us by slipping into an understated yet gorgeous Givenchy gown that showed the subtlest bit of shoulder.
Considering the power of the so-called "Meghan Markle effect," we would hardly be surprised if there's an uptick in the popularity of boat-neck dresses as Meghan continues to wear them. Ahead, take a chronological look at all the times the former Suits star has put her bateau obsession on display this year - so far.
Here's Everything You'll Need to Copy Rihanna in All Her Holy Glory at the Met Gala
The moment Rihanna arrived at the Met Gala this year, it was like she parted the red sea carpet and showed everyone why she's truly a fashion icon. Rihanna, who was one of the cohosts, blessed the world with a Margiela pope-inspired outfit that had us in pure awe. The theme was "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination," and boy, did she stick to it!
What better way to pay homage to Rihanna in all her holy glory than re-creating her look for Halloween? The basic essentials you'll need are a mitre aka a bishop's hat, a silver beaded dress or a top and miniskirt, a long jacket, pearl ankle bracelets, and silver glitter heels. Shop everything you'll need to dress up like Rihanna and prepare to have others bow down!
We Found a Spaghetti-Strap Dress Perfect For Large Busts - No Bra Required!
Reformation makes some of the cutest Summer dresses we can think of, but honestly, if you've got a larger chest, the fit can be tough. Many styles require some kind of underlayer like a bralette or cami so you don't feel overexposed, and others just aren't meant to be worn with a bra, which can prove difficult for many women. But after much trial and error, I am happy to report that I found the Reformation dress larger-breasted women can wear, and it's not what you'd think.
The Ava Dress ($178) is made of 100 percent linen, and it's a minidress with thin spaghetti straps, which doesn't sound ideal. There are two keys that make this dress a winner, though. The first is the smocked back, which gives traditionally unforgiving linen some stretch and movement. Plus, it holds you in enough so you can actually wear this dress without a bra, though strapless is also an option if you'll feel more comfortable. The second is the straight-across neckline. Sometimes sweetheart or v-necks can feel a bit too revealing, but the straight line still shows off your assets without feeling scandalous.
Seriously, we love this dress. It comes in five cute colors and patterns, but the navy and white polka dot strikes the right balance between retro and current. Now there's no need to feel like you're missing out on all those fun Summer dresses. Go forth and enjoy the weather!

8 Secrets From Cruise Ship Employees
A lot goes on behind closed cabin doors on cruise ships. Are your accommodations actually clean? Do crew members even care if you're having a good time? And just how much sex is happening on board the boat? Several cruise ship employees have taken to Reddit over time to spill the beans on what life is really like when sailing the open seas, and they have some great tips for cruise-goers to keep in mind the next time they travel. Read on for details you never knew.
1. There are some major benefits (and downsides) to working on a cruise ship.
One cruise ship employee said that there were a lot of positive aspects to working on the ship. "Best parts: cheap drinks, great parties, decent pay, easy way to save, wake up in a new city/country almost everyday, great way to network, become a more confident person, etc." Employees get to travel the world! Still, not everything is great. There are understandably some downsides to living and working on a cruise ship. "Worst: guests are always right . . . ALWAYS, you have a nametag on in public areas even when you are 'off duty,' always tired from lack of sleep, food taste dull after awhile . . . " Because employees are on contract for shorter periods of time, they often work longer hours (up to 16 hours per day).
2. If you get off the ship, follow the crew!
"If you ever go on a cruise, and you get off the ship and you want to know where to eat, follow the crew. The crew knows where the cheap and good food is, where the best dive bars are, and for the most part the safest places in the area. Don't waste money at Señor Frog's like everyone else."
3. Crew members get VERY friendly with one another.
Multiple crew members seem to agree on one thing: sex between employees is definitely happening on cruise ships. One former employee said he "hooked up with like seven different people myself and I am a shy, average looking dude." Another, when asked if a cruise ship is like a "sea-orgy" where everyone bangs each other, responded seriously with "Yes, it's actually just one big bang-fest." However, relations between employees and guests are strictly forbidden and grounds for immediate termination of the cruise ship employee.
4. Pay for crew members comes with extra add-ons - and it's not all that difficult to get hired.
"We get paid daily wages and some days we work more than others. Only thing I pay for is drinks. Everything else is on them." Depending on what cruise line a person is working with, members can also potentially get discounts on cruises for personal vacations. "You don't really have any bills on board (aside from tourist traps and drinking)," said a former cruise ship employee. "It was relatively easy to get in, but I'm very good at interviews. If you know what you're doing in the field of your choice, you'll have no problem . . . "
5. Crew members really want you to have the vacation of a lifetime.
"We work extremely hard to make sure you have a vacation of a lifetime . . . Those cruise surveys are actually taken VERY serious with our company. I'm happy to say that I've been mentioned ALMOST every cruise I've worked. I also work extremely hard to make sure the kids are having the time of their lives."
6. Cleanliness is VERY important!
If you're worried about sanitation on cruises, fear no more - or at least fear a little less. "Crew had to wash hands entering and leaving the crew mess. Chicken, seafood, bread, and vegetables all have separate freezers and storage sections (and elevators) which are cleaned daily. It's no joke! They have people clean the little grooves in the metal going into the elevators just to give you an example." According to another crew member, the kitchens on cruise ships are, in a word, "spotless."
7. If a crew member gets sick, they are quarantined.
"If they even think you have the flu, you're in quarantine for up to a week. In your cabin. Food is brought to you in a sealed container and you. Can. Not. Leave. Period. The ship is a natural hot zone. Over 4,000 people crammed together for sometimes a week at a time, bound to happen. If the ship gets over 5 percent ill, that's when things start to get nasty. Mandatory face shield etc. Also, whenever anyone gets on the ship, they get a hand full of Purell. Mandatory. And nobody can bring food on or off. They take cleanliness very seriously."
8. The one thing crew members want cruise-goers to know . . .
"The one thing that cruisers should know is that during a port day, the crew are just like passengers. They go out and have fun! On sea days however, they work their asses off to make you have the best time of your life. They really do want to make your vacation amazing, and work hard to do so."
7 Things Millennials Still Ask Their Parents to Do (but Shouldn't)
From setting up a 401(k) to negotiating car insurance, transitioning into adulthood can be exciting and a bit overwhelming. You may feel like you're continually turning to parents or a trusted advisor for advice. And that's OK - you are likely making big decisions and taking on greater financial responsibility.
But if you're ready to start adulting on your own, check out these seven ways to take on more responsibility.
1. Know What You're Paying For
When you lived at home, your parents probably handled most of the decision-making: they picked the cable plan, figured out utilities, and planned for groceries each week. If you're ready to tackle those choices on your own, the first step is knowing what you're paying for and how much you're paying for it.
We have more recurring payments and subscriptions than ever before - including Netflix accounts, Amazon Prime memberships, extra iCloud storage, and phone and internet bills - so take stock of your current expenditures. Do you know how much internet speed you're paying for? A full 42 percent of people don't. Avoid that trap; take an inventory of everything you pay for; and make sure each subscription is worth the money.
2. Budget and Track Your Spending
Most of us have received financial assistance from parents while in school or just starting out on our own, and that's perfectly OK. Whether you're paying your own way or getting some help from family, you have the power to create a budget and track your spending. Taking responsibility for your budget now will help you manage your money later.
You can use budget apps like Mint to track your spending, or check with your bank or credit union to see if they offer free financial counseling.
3. Schedule Your Own Appointments
From haircuts to teeth cleanings to oil changes, our lives revolve around our schedules. Growing up, we often relied on our parents to arrange these appointments for us. But you'll feel more in control of your life (and your schedule) when you start making your own appointments. And while you may not love making phone calls, most businesses - whether it's the salon or doctor's office - have friendly staff waiting to help you out.
4. Build Your Credit
Your parents may have cosigned with you on big items in the past (and they may need to cosign on things in the near future), but with a little initiative, you can start building your credit up enough to eventually take on loans without a cosigner at all.
Improving your credit score can also help you get lower interest rates and approval for mortgage and car loans. Use the following suggestions as you start working on your credit score:
- Stay current on all your loan and bill payments to demonstrate financial responsibility.
- Take advantage of credit card rewards, such as cash back, points, bonus miles, and low initial interest rates.
- Build a solid credit history by keeping credit accounts open - a good credit history of five years or longer will increase your credit score.
5. Save For Large Purchases
Have you ever had someone tell you, "It will mean more to you if you pay for it yourself"? It's actually true. Saving for a big purchase will help you manage your money and make more conservative spending choices.
While you're saving, extravagant plans or trips may have to wait, and that's OK. Here are some tips to make the saving process easier:
- Create a separate savings account for your big purchase.
- Set up automatic transfers to your savings account from each paycheck.
- Purchase something that you can realistically afford, and when you go to make your purchase, stick to your budget.
6. Set Up Your Insurance
Although another birthday is always fun, turning 26 can be a bit of a bummer once you realize you are no longer covered under your parent's health insurance plan. Luckily, many companies offer health and dental insurance plans for employees. There are various plan options on the market, so take some time to determine the best option for you.
For automobile insurance, you'll also have quite a few choices. It's easy to overpay for car insurance, so make sure you're getting a good price. Get several quotes, and check out several different types of coverage. If you don't know where to start, consider going through an insurance broker. Also keep in mind that your driving record impacts your insurance rate.
7. Plan For Your Future
If your parents or grandparents set up some sort of trust fund for you, you may already have a good start on financing your future. But you shouldn't bank on that fund exclusively. Start making your own "rainy day" fund for any unexpected expenses, and if you're in school, have a plan to finish your degree and start figuring out what you'll do after graduating.
You should also learn how to set up a 401(k) or an IRA for retirement - any little bit you can set aside now will have a good chance to grow and mature in the coming years.
Whether you are just starting out on your own or receiving some assistance from your parents, you can use these tips to gain greater freedom as you take on more responsibility.

This Mother's Honest Postpartum Photo Proves "Being a Mom Is the Ultimate Sacrifice"
Autumn Benjamin, a mom to a sweet baby girl named Layla, isn't afraid to talk about the not-so-glamorous parts of childbirth. In a now-viral Facebook post, she explained that navigating the first few days of motherhood can be especially overwhelming, especially from a physical standpoint. But despite the pain, Autumn is proud of how much her body has accomplished - and she thinks other women should be, too.
"I've debated on this post for a while but I've decided that I'd show the hard parts of the aftermath of giving birth, and the ultimate sacrifice that mothers make from day one," she wrote. "Kevin snapped this of me. This was two days after I gave birth to Layla. Eating my 'nice meal' provided by the hospital. An overcooked steak and sides. I was in new territory. Learning to breastfeed this little human being that I just brought into the world. Wearing these big mesh panties, still sporting a pregnant belly . . . no one told me your belly doesn't go down immediately. No one told me I'd be bleeding out."

Although the physical part of having a baby is certainly taxing, the new mom also explained that birth can take a toll on your mental state:
No one told me that I would spend hours crying and full of emotion. I remember just laying there in the hospital bed crying. I was crying because my baby girl was finally here.. FINALLY! But wait . . .that means she isn't protected inside of me anymore. And that's a scary feeling. At what point, I think Kevin was at a loss. I realized that when I was being held by him in the hospital's shower and I was just crying uncontrollably. It's all a blur but I do remember saying 'she's not safe inside of me anymore' and that was a really hard thing to work through.
Another subject Autumn wasn't afraid to broach? Tearing during labor:
"I was also in so much pain," she said. "No one tells you that typically with a 'quick delivery' comes a bad rip. I ripped all the way up and down, and also side to side. The weeks following I couldn't walk. I couldn't use the bathroom. I wore these big Depends diapers. I never thought I would be normal again. Kevin had to help me do EVERYTHING from pee, to walk up stairs."
"Don't ever discredit a mother. You don't know the half."
As all moms know, the sacrifice definitely doesn't stop there - there are still plenty of feedings and sleepless nights on top of waiting for your body to heal.
"Being a mom is the ultimate sacrifice," she said. "You give up your body for nine months to grow this little baby. You go through labor and delivery. You go through the emotions that come with childbirth. You let go of all shame as you walk around your house in diapers and ask your SO to spray warm water on your rip while you pee to avoid that burn. You spend tireless hours latching your baby and feeding your baby to establish and keep up your milk supply because you want to breastfeed so. Damn. Bad. You remain patient through leaps, growth spurts, and cluster feeding."

And while there's no denying your life completely changes once you enter motherhood, Autumn doesn't mind putting parts of her life on hold for Layla.
"But most importantly, moms give up who they were before they were a mother," she said. "Most moms give up a lot of their hobbies, dreams, and plans. Moms put their lives on hold so their babies can live out theirs. We deal with so many emotions that we internalize - just so we can be mothers to our babies. Don't ever discredit a mother. You don't know the half. I used to be Autumn. Fun loving, crazy, outgoing Autumn. But now I'm Layla's mama. And I'm okay with that."
