Melanie Griffith Reflects on Her High-Profile Marriages: "I Love Them All So Much"

Melanie Griffith isn't interested in getting married again, but she also doesn't wish her three ex-husbands any ill will. The 61-year-old actress recently opened up about marriage - and divorce - in a candid interview for the September 2018 issue of InStyle. "All of my husbands, my three husbands - I love them all so much, and we're all very close," she said.

Melanie famously married Don Johnson for six months when she was 18, and the couple later remarried a decade later following her split from Steven Bauer. Despite the ups and downs of their relationship, Melanie said it was meant to be for one special reason: her daughter Dakota Johnson. "It was sort of a natural karmic thing for us to get back together and to have Dakota," Melanie said. "She was meant to come into the world, if you think about it."

Melanie also remembers her marriage to Antonio Banderas with fondness. She said marrying the actor and sharing a daughter with him, Stella del Carmen Banderas, was "more exciting than playing a part in a story." Melanie added, "You have to live your life and not just play somebody else all the time. And how can you play somebody else if you don't live your own life?"

Antonio shared a similar sentiment in an interview with People earlier this year. "Even if we are divorced, she is my family and I will love her until the day I die," he said. "We have been in contact all these years and we managed to do a separation that is very elegant."

As for the future, Melanie thinks her married days are behind her. "I really don't think it's relevant for anyone anymore," she said. "But especially if you're 60 and you have four kids and you're living the life you've always wanted. Then why get married?"

I'm a Trainer, and This Is the Exercise I Do to Strengthen My Back and Legs

Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Rima Brindamour

If I had to choose my favorite body part to train during workouts, it would be my legs. This probably stems from my background in soccer and track and field, but I can't help but love that burning feeling I get after doing walking lunges, sprints, and power cleans.

A few weeks ago, I took a HIIT class and decided to skip the kettlebell swings due to a nagging lower-back injury and do kettlebell deadlifts instead. During my second set of deadlifts, the instructor came over to me and told me to try a narrow stance deadlift. As soon as I completed my first rep, I felt my entire posterior chain light up, especially my hamstrings and butt.

I was extremely sore two days after my workout and couldn't figure out why, and then it hit me: it was the narrow stance deadlifts. It was a hurt-so-good feeling, which is why I'm sharing this move with all of you. Get ready to strengthen your back, glutes, core, and hamstrings with this deadlift variation.

Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Tamara Pridgett

Here's how to do it:

  • Select a medium to heavy kettlebell; 15 kilograms (about 33 pounds) should be a good start, but feel free to go lighter or heavier. There should be about half a foot of space in between your feet.
  • With your core engaged and your back flat, grip the handle of the kettlebell with both hands, holding it in front of you with your arms fully extended.
  • Engage your core as you shift your hips backward, like you were going to sit in a chair, lowering the kettlebell down to the ground. Be sure not to round your back.
  • Still engaging your core, drive through your heels and squeeze your glutes as you lift up.
  • This counts as one rep. Complete three sets of eight reps.

The Details of JFK's "Affair" With Marilyn Monroe Are Way More Chill Than We've Been Told

Marilyn Monroe was one of the most glamorous and sought-after stars of her time. John F. Kennedy was, well, the president of the United States. After Marilyn performed a steamy rendition of "Happy Birthday" at the commander-in-chief's 45th birthday party in May 1962, rumors of an affair were propelled - and those rumors have persisted throughout history, even though details of an ongoing relationship between the two are actually pretty scarce.

The first time Marilyn and JFK were confirmed to have been at the same place at the same time was at the April in Paris Ball on April 11, 1957, at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in NYC; Marilyn was there with her then-husband, playwright Arthur Miller, while John attended with his wife, Jackie, and his sister, Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Both of them were photographed extensively throughout the night, but no meeting between them took place at that event. It's more likely that John and Marilyn first met at a dinner party hosted by actor Peter Lawford in 1961. Peter was married to John's sister Patricia, whom Marilyn became friends with while filming Let's Make Love. They also had a mutual friend in Frank Sinatra, who was a member of the Rat Pack with Peter and who briefly dated Marilyn after her divorce from Arthur Miller.

Multiple Marilyn historians, including respected biographer Donald Spoto, who wrote the 1993 book Marilyn Monroe: The Biography, allege that the most plausible time that Marilyn and JFK could have had a sexual encounter was during a party at Bing Crosby's home in Palm Springs, CA, on March 24, 1962. Marilyn's masseur and close friend Ralph Roberts told Spoto that he received a call from the actress asking him for massage techniques for muscles of the back, and that he "heard a distinctive Boston accent in the background" before Marilyn handed the phone to President Kennedy. Ralph Roberts added, "Marilyn told me that this night in March was the only time of her 'affair' with JFK. A great many people thought, after that weekend, that there was more to it. But Marilyn gave me the impression that it was not a major event for either of them: it happened once, that weekend, and that was that."

"Marilyn loved the secrecy and the drama of it, but Kennedy was not the kind of man she wanted to spend her life with, and she made that very clear."

Donald Spoto also wrote, "No serious biographer can maintain the existence of an affair between Marilyn and the Kennedys. All we can say for sure is that the actress and the President have met four times, between October 1961 and August 1962, and it was during one of those meetings, that they called to a friendly relation of Marilyn from a bedroom. Shortly after, Marilyn confided this sexual relation to her close relatives, insisting about the fact that their affair ended there." The late actress Susan Strasberg, whose father Lee was Marilyn's acting coach and who considered Marilyn to be "a surrogate sister," wrote in an unfinished memoir that Marilyn did spend that night with the president, but denied any sort of ongoing affair. "It was OK to sleep with a charismatic president," Strasberg said, adding that "Marilyn loved the secrecy and the drama of it, but Kennedy was not the kind of man she wanted to spend her life with, and she made that very clear." It was reportedly that night at Crosby's home that John asked Marilyn to perform at his upcoming birthday party at Madison Square Garden.

Image Source: Getty / Cecil Stoughton / The LIFE Images Collection

On May 19, 1962, Marilyn, clad in a curve-hugging sequined dress, sang a breathy rendition of the song for JFK (on his request, mind you). While rumors of an affair ran rampant after the event - and pictures have been doctored over time to show them together - the only photographic evidence of them that exists is a shot of Marilyn, John, and Bobby Kennedy having a conversation during a party at the home of movie executive Arthur Krim after she performed.

Less than three months after the famous performance, Marilyn would be dead from an accidental overdose of barbiturates, leaving behind a lifetime of unconfirmed rumors of a relationship between her and the president (not to mention his possible involvement in her death). Despite the fact that JFK's philandering ways were well known, it's most likely that his connection with Marilyn was just a dalliance and nothing more than a one-night stand. Was it salacious? Yes. But was it the torrid, persisting affair that we've been told it was? All signs point to "nah."

Just 4 Years Ago, Meghan Markle Blogged About Wanting to Be a Princess - See What She Wrote!

If you asked adolescent me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I'd probably say an astronaut, a WNBA player, or more reasonably, Doris Burke. Young girls set their sights on dreams that may be far out of reach, but for Meghan Markle, the "childhood fantasy" of wanting to become a princess actually came true. People recovered one of the now-Duchess of Sussex's old blog posts from 2014, where she wrote about her princess fantasies and even admired Kate Middleton.

"Little girls dream of being princesses. I, for one, was all about She-Ra, Princess of Power," Meghan wrote on her former blog, The Tig. "And grown women seem to retain this childhood fantasy. Just look at the pomp and circumstance surrounding the royal wedding and endless conversation about Princess Kate."

(For those who don't know, the fictional Princess She-Ra - or Princess Adora - was He-Man's twin sister and a leader of a great rebellion. . . a female cartoon icon, to say the least.)

Meghan referenced her princess dreams as the opener to an interview with Princess Alia Al-Senussi. She added that she "had a bit of a 'pinch-myself-I'm-emailing-with-a-princess' moment," but little did she know, just four years later she herself would be married to the Prince Harry. Meghan conducted a Q&A with the Libyan activist, where she praised Princess Alia Al-Senussi's education and philanthropic work.

Now that Meghan is a proud member of the royal family, following her unforgettable wedding to Prince Harry in May, it's possible her 2014 interview inspired the person she is today. As one of the world's most influential people, Meghan has dedicated her efforts to many charity organizations, with the official royal family website detailing "her lifelong commitment to causes such as social justice and women's empowerment."

I may have worked toward different career goals than my elementary school self desired, but if Meghan's 2014 interview can tell you anything, it's to never give up on your dreams (even if it is to become a princess, because there's still Prince Harry's single hot cousin Louis)!

Master Caleb Stewart, a 4-year-old boy with a passion for reading made a compelling speech about its benefits at his local middle school. In a now-viral video, Caleb grabbed the microphone and told his audience that he personally reads every day and "absolutely loves the adventure of reading," and we pretty much melted from the get-go.

The adorable little bibliophile rattled off all the good things kids can get from cracking open one of their favorite titles - and he makes some pretty inspiring points. "Reading every day has made me smarter," he said. "Reading also strengthened my vocabulary and language skills." He also pointed out that reading can improve children's long-term memory and enhance their ideas.

Master did his due diligence by reminding parents and teachers that reading aloud to kids or encouraging them to read by themselves are some of the best things they can do to help them develop. And we're not just talking about books. Caleb explained that reading newspapers, magazines, or even billboards can be just as beneficial.

The big takeaway here? Reading can open a ton of doors for kids - so keep the material coming!

Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen Form an Unexpected Friendship in the Green Book Trailer

Are you ready to get emotional? Because the trailer for Green Book, which is based on a true story about two men in the 1960s, is probably going to have you all the way up in your feelings.

The film stars Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali as Dr. Don Shirley, a world-class Black pianist, who hires Tony Lip (Academy Award nominee Viggo Mortensen), a Bronx-born bouncer, to drive him on a concert tour that extends from Manhattan to the Deep South. Using the "Green Book," which serves as a guide to the establishments that were safe at the time for African-Americans, the pair form an unexpected bond during their lengthy road trip.

The drama, directed by Peter Farrelly , looks like it combines the perfect amounts of humor and humanity with the harsh realities of living as a black man during that time period (which sadly has more than a little relevance to the state of America today). Watch the trailer above before it hits theaters on Nov. 21.

Still Sad About The Middle Coming to an End? Well, a Sue Heck Spinoff Is on the Way

Although ABC's The Middle recently ended after an admirable nine-season run - the now-canceled Roseanne reboot took away its Tuesday night time slot - it seems Sue Heck is finally getting her due. Similarly to how Black-ish spawned a spinoff about eldest daughter Zoey Johnson (Yara Shahidi) in Grown-ish, The Middle has given way to a spinoff that will follow Sue, played by Eden Sher.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will focus on "the 20-something adventures of eternal optimist Sue Heck as she leaves the small town of Orson to navigate the ups and downs of a career and young adulthood in Chicago." The last season of The Middle, which ended on May 22, was the perfect showcase for the character, who we got to see deal with romantic relationships while finishing her final year of college.

Just like the original show, the as-yet-untitled comedy is being steered by The Middle creators DeAnn Heline and Eileen Heisler under their Black and Blondie Productions banner. There's still no word yet on whether or not the rest of Sue's family will appear - mom and dad Frankie (Patricia Heaton) and Mike (Neil Flynn), and siblings Axl (Charlie McDermott) and Brick (Atticus Shaffer) - but since it's in the same hands as the flagship, we can hope some cameos are in our future (someone has to help her move into her first post-college apartment, right?).

Now that Roseanne is fortunately no more, the network has an opening in their Tuesday time slot at 8 p.m., which is when Sue's spinoff will likely air. Mark your calendars!

Princess Eugenie Could Actually Give Up Her Royal Title After Marrying Jack Brooksbank

Princess Eugenie is giving us our second royal wedding of the year when she gets married on Oct. 12. The 28-year-old will wed Jack Brooksbank, a wine merchant who has been dating the princess since 2010. Details have already begun trickling in from palace officials, and if you think Eugenie's wedding is going to be on the same level as her cousin Harry's, you might be in for a shock. Yes, she'll be tying the knot at St. George's Chapel in Windsor (the same church where Meghan and Harry said their "I dos") and she'll get to wear a tiara for the first time - but instead of getting a shiny new title, as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle did, Eugenie could potentially give hers up.

The Idea That Breastfeeding Leads to More Bonding Is Bullsh*t, and Here's Why

Breast is best. How many times have us moms heard this "universal truth" about breastfeeding? Among the countless benefits of breastfeeding that are shoved down our throats by medical professionals, the internet, mom friends, and other well-meaning mothers is the idea that breastfeeding will lead to bonding more readily with our babies. But after formula feeding three babies and breastfeeding one, I'm here to say that the bonding idea is bullshit.

The decision [not to breastfeed] was likely made with tears and heartache. But here we are, feeding our babies the best way we know how, bonding with them all the while.

When my first child was born, I tried breastfeeding her. At the time, it seemed easier to successfully land on the moon. Navigating the world of breastfeeding felt beyond foreign and confusing. My daughter wouldn't latch on. My milk wasn't coming in. My nipples were bleeding. My right boob barely escaped a harrowing experience with a breast pump on a too-high setting. I was relieved when my husband reminded me there was nothing wrong with formula feeding. From the moment I first offered my baby a bottle, I enjoyed feeding times instead of dreading them and feeling afraid of my baby.

Feeding times with my firstborn and then second and third children were always filled with love. I can still remember holding their warm, little bodies close to mine. Smelling their delicious newborn smell. Listening to their sweet noises. Whispering in their ears that I loved them so and would always do everything I could to protect them.

What many people don't seem to understand is that no matter how you feed your baby, you're close to them and spending time with them. Maybe some parents prop their babies up on a pillow and ignore them during every feeding, but that's not how bottle feeding looks for many of us. And what I would want everyone out there to know is that formula feeding mamas love their babies just as much as moms who breastfeed. For whatever reason, we just couldn't or didn't want to breastfeed. The decision was likely hard to make, fraught with tears and heartache. But here we are, feeding our babies the best way we know how, bonding with them all the while.

I already knew how bonded I felt with the three kids I formula fed. Then recently, my fourth child came along, and I was ready to give breastfeeding another try. For a variety of reasons - like that plenty of time had passed since my bad experience and I didn't feel any pressure to make breastfeeding work since I knew formula feeding was a good option as well - both me and my son took easily to breastfeeding. And just like when I formula fed my other kids, I hold my newborn and feed him every few hours. I smell his skin and head. I stroke his soft cheeks. I tell him how much I love him. I feel so close to him and so happy to be his mom.

Now that I've experienced formula feeding and breastfeeding, I'm sure that no matter how you feed your baby, bonding with them is possible. So although breastfeeding offers many benefits, the ability to feel close to your little one is simply not an exclusive virtue of this favored and much fawned-over method. Here's hoping the mommies considering formula feeding get the message!

This Is Us Just Found the Perfect Actor to Play Jack's Younger Brother, Nicky

The Pearson family just got a little bigger! During a For Your Emmy Consideration panel for This Is Us on Monday, it was announced that Michael Angarano will be playing Jack's younger brother, Nicky, in season three. As fans will recall from last season, Jack and Nicky served in Vietnam together, but Nicky eventually died at war. The show's creator Dan Fogelman recently teased that the upcoming season will explore Jack's time in Vietnam, which means we are in for quite a few brotherly moments between the Pearson boys.

Shortly after the news was announced, Angarano shared his excitement on Twitter writing, "I am beyond grateful and very excited to be a part of this show - my grandmother even told her dentist." Angarano currently stars on Showtime's I'm Dying Up Here, though he has plenty of acting credits under his belt. In fact, the 30-year-old has been acting since he was a little kid. He got his first big break playing the younger version of William Miller in Almost Famous in 2000, and has since starred in a variety of shows and movies including Sky High, The Art of Getting By, 24, The Knick, and Mom. He also had a recurring role on Will & Grace as Jack's son Elliott, which he reprised in the reboot last year.

We can't wait to see him get into character as Nicky when the show returns on Sept. 25.

32 Times the Royal Family Broke Protocol and Packed on the PDA Anyway

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sneaked in a smooch after a polo match in England this week, and while the newlyweds aren't shy about showing PDA in general, they aren't the only royal couple to kiss on the field over the years. Outside of sporting events, we've been able to see even more sweet PDA from the royals over the years, from high-profile wedding ceremonies - that Buckingham Palace balcony has sure seen some lip-locking - to random displays of affection around the world. There may be some official rules in place, but even the royals aren't immune from showing love every once in a while! The Bachelor in Paradise Resort Is Real, and It Is Spectacular

Well, another few seasons of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette have ended, and you know what that means, right? It's time for Bachelor in Paradise! While the concept of the show isn't exactly the same as the Bachelor franchise, it's still super fun to watch and we get to catch up with all our most loved - and most controversial - former contestants.

But where exactly is paradise found? We have the answer: Mexico.

According to multiple sources, the show is filmed at the Playa Escondida Resort in Sayulita, Mexico, about 40 minutes away from the city of Puerto Vallarta. Marketed as a "private jungle beach hideaway and spa," the resort has four different tiers of beachfront villas, a bird canyon villa, an ocean-view villa, and a tropical-view villa. The tropical view, which is the least amount of money, ranges from $165 per night to $225 per night, while the beachfront rooms range in price from $250 on the low end to $495 on the high end.

The resort also has a spa; a poolside restaurant that shows off healthy gourmet meals, a magical waterfall you can dine next to, and a lunch spot that serves Mexican specialties; a private beach with several amenities free of charge; a killer beach bar; private pools for those who rent villas (although there is a shared pool for all guests); and other highlights like yoga or excursions that the hotel can arrange for you.

Not saying it's on my bucket list, but if someone wants to take me, I think I could get behind spending a few days in paradise, bachelor(ette)-style, too!

Beware of These Wines: They're Not as Healthy as You Think

When it comes to vino and your health, some wines are better than others. Red wine, in particular, can be good for you, since it contains resveratrol, an antioxidant that fights aging and promotes greater heart health. Yet there are some wines out there that don't measure up in terms of benefits. To make the most of your wine splurge, avoid these picks that aren't so great for you, as then you're mostly just taking in empty calories to get that buzz. Plus, a tip: red wine has more antioxidants than white, so consider that slight advantage when choosing your bottle.

Riesling

Be wary of those sweet wines. "Though a personal favorite of mine, Riesling contains a very high amount of residual sugar, which in turn is broken down into fat and can also lead to a more severe hangover," says Jared Gelband, wine and beverage director at Italian Village Restaurants in Chicago, to POPSUGAR. Unless you choose a drier Riesling, don't make it your go-to sip to pair with a bowl of pasta. "I recommend Trocken label Rieslings, which are drier and have lower amounts of sugar in the wine, as they are fermented to dry," he adds.

Amarone

A rich Italian dry red wine, Amarone is pretty strong, and it'll get you drunk fast. "Too much alcohol has a negative effect on the liver," he says. It's smart to stay away from certain Amarones, since the full-bodied reds have some of the highest alcohol content, he notes. It can be upwards of 17 percent alcohol by volume, which is a whole lot. If you're drinking this, pace yourself well and don't drink too much.

Nonorganic Wine

Sure, this might be trickier to follow, but in general, organic wine will have fewer sulfites, Gelband says. "Sulfites are a concern. Imbibers report that these compounds cause headaches and allergic reactions," he says. All wines have sulfites to act as a preservative, but certain organic and biodynamic wines don't add additional sulfites to their wines, making them a healthier bottle. "If a guest or diner is concerned about sulfites, I recommend finding a natural wine producer for any type of their favorite pour," he says. Plus, you can also try Just the Wine drops, which help reduce the amount of sulfites in your glass, to see if it helps.

Moscato

Similar to Riesling, Moscato is super, super sweet, he says. This might make it pretty nice for a boozy dessert, but all that sugar can be bad for your health. "Moscato is so sweet because it has more residual sugar, and when sugar is fermented in Moscato, the fermentation process is stopped earlier, so therefore it's sweeter with a much lower alcohol content and more sugar," he explains. Not a great pick for a healthy pour!

I Had a Massive Crush on My Trainer - It Didn't End Well

After graduating college, I realized it was time to get in shape - real shape! Going on a 20-minute jog every other week was no longer going to cut it. Even though it was expensive and a luxury for me, I decided to get a personal trainer. I had a great job and worked hard and wanted to treat myself. That's the beauty of even a tiny bit of disposal income - it truly is yours to dispose of.

I also wanted to work with a trainer because I was so intimidated by the gym. When I first wandered into Crunch Fitness on Union Street, in the young neighborhood of the Marina in San Francisco, I quickly realized I didn't know my way around the weight room, and as for cardio machines, I was familiar with the treadmill and elliptical - that was it.

After a few weeks of aimlessly jogging on the treadmill, I finally gained the courage to talk to the front desk about a trainer. They were more than happy to sign me up and I quickly got roped into a 20-session package. Then it was time to pick a trainer. It felt kind of like a high-class escort service . . . they asked me what I liked and if I wanted a man or woman! I idiotically said I wanted someone really fit. The woman looked at me like I was nuts. She said she would set me up with the trainer that was "every woman in the Marina's favorite guy." And for the sake of this story, let's call him Dom. She didn't show me a picture but she did give me Dom's number and said we could arrange our first session that way. I truly felt like I was being set up.

I texted with Dom and we arranged our first session - an early morning workout before I had to go into work. I'm dating myself, but this was before the days of cutesy athleisure; Lululemon was barely a thing. I was wearing flared - yes, flared - leggings that were pilling, an old sports bra, and an old frat tank. I walked into Crunch and laid eyes on a man I can only describe as godlike. He had a megawatt smile, a body that looked like it had been chiseled from marble, and one of those incredibly sexy raspy voices. I went bright red and forced myself to speak.

To make matters worse, Dom was really nice, one of those rare breeds of guys who is insanely hot but for some reason actually kind. Dom asked me about my normal workout routine (treadmill and more treadmill) and my diet (lots of takeout, four coffees per day, and an undisclosed amount of wine). Even though I was a trainer's nightmare, he smiled and nodded throughout all of it. He asked me about my goals and I clammed up. I mumbled something about getting lean and toned. Then we got started.

When I say it was the most painful hour of my life mentally and physically, I am not exaggerating. First, I was horrifically out of shape but so embarrassed in front of Dom that I pushed myself too hard. Secondly, it was just awkward! He was so hot that I didn't know where to look. I am a confident person usually, but Dom left me blithering like a total idiot. I barely made it out of my first session alive.

After that initial workout, I couldn't walk properly for three days. Dom texted me to ask how I was feeling, so of course I immediately took a screenshot of the text and sent it to my friends. "OMG, guys what should I respond??" I said. My friends immediately laid into me for acting like Dom was a crush. That's when I knew I had a serious problem.

I saw Dom a few more times. I started wearing makeup to the gym and bought sexy workout tops. The problem was, I wasn't concentrating on working out. Whenever Dom would show me a move, I would suck my abs in when I did it so I looked thinner. I was constantly posing and giggling like a moron; I didn't remember any moves or tips because I was concentrating so hard on making Dom like me. I realized I wasn't getting anything out of my sessions. Poor Dom was just trying to do his job.

On about my sixth session, Dom and I were chatting. Or rather I was doing my usual routine - twirling my hair, giggling. I asked Dom what his favorite post-workout meals were and he said, "Well, my girlfriend and I . . ." Then I froze. Never in a million years did I think that Dom might have a girlfriend. I was mortified. I had been flirting with him aggressively for the past few weeks and in all honesty had started a Pinterest board for our wedding. I was so caught off guard, I feigned illness and went home.

I was so embarrassed because clearly Dom was telling me in a kind way to tone down my flirting. I was so cringed out that I just couldn't bear to go back. I told Dom I was traveling for work for a few weeks and prayed I didn't see him around the Marina. I didn't step foot in the gym for months and ended up eating the cost of the package. It was disposable, right?

Nowadays, I have a new trainer. You guessed it - a woman! I'm also way more in shape now! I think it was the combination of being really young and immature plus being out of shape that caused me to be such a soggy noodle around Dom. And Dom, if you're out there - you're still the most gorgeous guy I've ever seen . . . and I hope you and your girlfriend are doing well!

Considering a Wellness Retreat? 6 Reasons You Should Book It ASAP

When I was blessed with the opportunity to go on a wellness vacation with my best friend, I hopped at the chance. We boarded the plane from Michigan and flew to Hilton Head Health in the charming state of South Carolina. As the taxi driver drove us in, part of me wished we were going on a regular beach vacation where we sipped fancy cocktails and ate greasy food, instead of a health getaway where fitness instructors would tell us to hold our planks longer.

Before the wellness trip, I was reasonably healthy. I'd do my best to eat well and work out during the week, but the weekends were another story. I'd splurge on drinks, fatty foods, and plenty of desserts. I come from a family that absolutely loves to eat, and I had no idea what portion control meant.

While I was curious and excited about the wellness trip, I was downright nervous, too. Now that I'm back to regular life, I can firmly say that it was a life-changing experience. If you're planning to take a trip soon, here are a few reasons you may want to consider a health vacation!

  1. The team environment is incredibly motivating. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere at our resort was warm and welcoming. Guests walked around sweaty and smiling - proud of themselves for kicking ass and eating well. The staff embraced us as though it was the fifth time we had visited, almost like we were family. During the classes, we all high-fived each other regardless of where we were in our healthy journey.
  2. There are so many fitness classes, you'll have no excuse. My friend and I tried everything: weight training, yoga, pool aerobics, Tabata, treading, Pilates, and even just learning how to properly stretch. These fitness classes revitalized my body and rejuvenated my soul.
  3. The food? It's good. Upon our first meal, I sat stunned in the resort's elegant dining room. Not only was my Asian rice bowl delicious, but it was filling, too. All of the meals were freshly prepared, tasty, and satisfying. I grew a new understanding about how much food I should actually be eating for my body type. We weren't denied anything, either. It wasn't a "no-carb" kitchen where all the food was raw. We could eat healthy snacks throughout the day and even enjoy the occasional dessert. I finally learned how to enjoy the right amount of food that my body needed to use for fuel . . . a crazy idea called portion control.
  4. Cooking classes are also on the menu. The health resort offered cooking classes so we could learn how to prepare the healthy meals in the comfort of our own homes. I've even tried some of the recipes in my own kitchen, and they taste just as good as the head chef said they would.
  5. This is the type of vacation that leaves you energized. That old saying "I need a vacation from my vacation"? Yeah, we didn't feel that way. Throughout our time on our wellness vacation, we rented bicycles and breathed in the beautiful island. Instead of letting the sun burn us all day while we sipped on sugary cocktails, we enjoyed the beach for a couple short hours while snacking on almonds. It wasn't the picture of vacations in the past, but it sure was much healthier and even more enjoyable.
  6. The learning doesn't stop when you leave. Since we've been home, my best friend and I text each other pictures of our meals - keeping each other in check. We talk about our weekly workout plans and encourage each other just like the staff did at Hilton Head Health.

Our life-changing wellness vacation jump-started my health and fitness routine and made me realize that life is too short to not take care of my body. I've learned that vacations don't have to be filled with drinks, the sun, too much food, and soaking up every single experience you can - coming home with a new, healthy mindset means so much more. So if you are starting to plan an exciting vacation, consider indulging in one that your mind and body will thank you for.

Experts Say These Are the Exact Dangers of Belly Fat

Did you know that when medical professionals talk about excess belly fat, they're likely referring to something a lot more critical than having a less-than-flat stomach? What they often mean by belly fat is visceral fat, which is found deep inside our abdomens, surrounding our organs. Having too much of it, which isn't necessarily an obvious thing, has been linked to several serious diseases.

To help break down the unique dangers too much belly fat can present to our overall health, we talked with two experts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, Dr. M. Sue Kirkman, professor of medicine and medical director of the Diabetes Care Center Clinical Trials Unit in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, and Dr. Sriram Machineni, assistant professor and director of the Medical Weight Clinic. Read on for their expert medical opinions.

After Doing Whole30, I Can Tell You Exactly What Food Triggers My Anxiety

I've been taking a low dose of anxiety medication since finals week of my senior year of college. For a long time, it was exactly what I needed to keep my symptoms at bay. Unfortunately, though, as I made my way into my 30s with a full-time consulting job, a side hustle, and a new marriage, I found myself settling into my old anxious ways even with the medication. That's probably why I found myself consuming a few too many sugary treats to ease the stress of my busy days. (Hey! There's nothing a pack of Sour Patch Kids can't cure, amiright?)

When I finally decided to kick my habit of overindulgence to the curb, Whole30 seemed like the best approach. If you haven't heard of Whole30, it's an elimination diet that requires you to remove processed foods, dairy, alcohol, legumes, and grains from your life for 30 days. In short, I would be eating a lot of meat and vegetables for the next month!

I'd heard so many inspiring stories from people who had successfully completed the challenge and gone on to have healthier, more fulfilled lives. So, I cleaned out my cupboards, bought a ridiculous number of avocados, and gave my husband a fair warning. I was about to begin Whole30.

Throughout the challenge I experienced most of the same struggles and benefits that most people experience throughout the 30-day program. I was tired in the beginning, but then super energized for the last 10 days of the program. I slept better, my stomach was flatter, and my skin was clearer. I didn't have a lot of cravings, but my husband will tell you that a glass of Rosé was all I wanted for the whole 30 days.

But the most surprising part of Whole30 happened at the end. I noticed that I wasn't feeling my usual anxious feelings throughout the day. In fact, sometime around day 25, I realized I couldn't remember the last time I even felt anxious! Even more surprising was that my anxiety was gone even though I didn't have my usual comfort foods on hand.

After reintroducing each eliminated food group one by one, it became really obvious that sugar was the culprit of my heightened anxiety. Sometimes the negative effects of my beloved Sour Patch Kids lasted well into the next day. And that glass of Rosé I'd been craving? Even the sugar in that left me feeling uncomfortable.

Have I completely eliminated sugar from my diet? I have to admit the answer is no, but the awareness of how sugar impacts my anxiety has been extremely eye opening. Now, instead of checking the calorie count on the foods I eat, I look first at the amount of sugar. This has helped me avoid foods that I once thought were healthy, but were probably making me feel bad. I'll probably never cut sugar completely out of my life, but now I know that when I'm feeling extra anxious, I should avoid sugary snacks.

Overhydrating Can Be Dangerous - Here Are the Side Effects

"Make sure to drink a lot of water" - we've heard it from our parents, coaches, doctors, and friends, but is it possible to drink too much water? In 2007, a woman in California died of hyponatremia or water intoxication, after taking part in a radio station's water-drinking contest. Cases like this one are rare, but it is important to be cautious of drinking an excessive amount of water in a short period of time.

We asked a dietitian for the facts behind how much you should and shouldn't be drinking.

There's Such Thing as Too Much Water

Water intoxication occurs because drinking an abnormally large amount of water flushes the system and causes sodium levels in the bloodstream to drop to a dangerously low level, said Liz Weinandy, registered dietitian at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. The body needs adequate sodium to regulate blood pressure as well as a number of important functions, such as muscle contraction. Hyponatremia is extremely dangerous and can lead to unconsciousness, coma, and ultimately death.

The Symptoms Include Nausea and Headaches

Getting to a state of hyponatremia is difficult, Weinandy told POPSUGAR. To reach the point of water intoxication, "a person would be drinking so much fluid that they would feel nauseous and they might vomit," she said. Other symptoms include headache and lethargy.

Feeling sick while drinking too much water is part of the body's system of checks and balances that works to prevent us from unknowingly harming ourselves, she said. "The thirst mechanism will kick in when our body needs more fluids, and when we've had enough or a little bit more than enough, the mechanism that makes us repel against drinking any more will also kick in." Always listen to your body and don't force yourself to drink more water if doing so is making you feel ill.

If you do experience any of the mentioned symptoms after drinking a large amount of fluid, you could be overhydrated. At that point, it's crucial to stop drinking and immediately seek treatment.

Your Limit Depends on a Few Factors

There's no universal cutoff for how much water you can drink before it becomes unhealthy. The limit for each individual person depends on gender, age, activity level, and more, Weinandy said, but staying in tune with your body's signals is key to avoiding overhydration. If your urine is nearly clear, you're adequately hydrated and don't need to drink more, she added. Pacing yourself while drinking water will also help keep the body in balance. Hydrate before, during, and after a sporting event to avoid fluid overload following exercise.

For athletes who are losing a lot of electrolytes through sweat, it's important to throw a sports drink into the mix. This will help replace necessary electrolytes such as sodium and potassium, Weinandy told POPSUGAR.

In cases of extreme thirst, call your doctor before accidentally consuming an amount of water that could put you at risk for hyponatremia.

Follow the 8 Ounces a Day Rule

The amount of water you need to stay properly hydrated also depends on gender, age, and activity level, Weinandy said, but eight glasses at about 8 ounces each is sufficient for the average person.

But rather than following strict guidelines, Weinandy again recommends listening to your body. "I always tell people you should be drinking enough fluid to where your urine is really pale colored," she said. "Aim for straw colored or lighter."
