You Need These Adorable Halloween Succulents From Target - They're Only $3!
Forget vampires, witches, and other creatures that go bump in the night - the scariest part about Halloween is how much money I spend at Target buying all its adorable holiday decor. But lucky for me and other Target fanatics, the must-have item from this year's batch of spooky merch is only $3. These cute mini ceramic pots from Target's Hyde and Eek! Boutique brand come in six iterations - a black cat, a jack-o'-lantern, a ghost, and pumpkins in black, orange, and white - with a different faux succulent in each. They are so tiny, they'd be perfect to double (or triple) up as festive desk decor or on a mantel at home. Keep reading to see the full collection and preorder them before something really spooky happens - they sell out!
Nicki Minaj Brought Some Seriously Long Pigtails to the MTV VMAs
Nicki Minaj showed up at the MTV VMAs with two surprise guests: her extralong pigtails. No doubt the work of extensions, these pigtails accompanied her to pick up the award for best hip-hop video, which she won for "Chun-Li."
They may not have been the most practical style on the red carpet, but her hair did make quite the statement. She paired the dramatic pigtails with a relatively subdued beauty look of ample bronzer and lip gloss. The end result is absolutely captivating, because it's not every day you see someone in pigtails that are as long as some children are tall. Keep reading to see more.

Someone Get Cardi B an Award For Her Stunning VMAs Beauty Look
Cardi B is a mom now, but she's still the life of the VMAs red carpet. The rapper made her first public appearance since giving birth to baby Kulture and proved that when it comes to hair and makeup, she still dominates the carpet. Cardi swapped her recent braided style for a cropped pixie cut (by Tokyo Stylez) that drew attention to her incredible makeup by Erika La' Pearl.
La' Pearl used the Pat McGrath MTHRSHP Subersive Eye Shadow Palette to create a bronzed smoky eye with a pop of purple on Cardi.
La'Pearl told POPSUGAR that when it comes to her glam, Cardi lets her squad express themselves creatively. " We really wanted her look tonight to be poised and elegant," she told us. "We wanted to show sophistication and her maturity as a new mom with Cardi's red carpet look, and dramatic eyes and clean skin was perfect for this glamorous new mom."
To enhance her already dramatic winged liner, La' Pearl used Kiss Lash Couture Triple Push Up Lashes in Teddy. She finished Cardi's fun yet sophisticated makeup with Pat McGrath's Matte Trance lipstick in She's Heaven. Zoom in on every angle of her gorgeous beauty look ahead.
Jennifer Lopez's Glowing VMAs Beauty Look Could Give the Sun a Run For Its Money
Jennifer Lopez showed up to the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards looking like a trophy, lighting up the red carpet with her coveted glow.
Her cheekbones were sculpted by her longtime makeup artist, Scott Barnes, and her ombré blond hair came courtesy of hairstylist Chris Appleton. Even J Lo's red carpet nails perfectly coordinated with her dress, as they were painted in a metallic chrome polish by her manicurist, Tom Bachick. Stare at her look from every angle ahead.
Millie Bobby Brown Had the Cutest Blowout and Minimalist Makeup at the VMAs
Though she's only 14, Millie Bobby Brown continues to school us in the art of red carpet hair and makeup. The genuine pro showed up to the 2018 VMAs red carpet with a flippy blowout and minimalist makeup. It was "I'm not trying" beauty done right.
The certifiably cool teen anchored her business-casual look with a power jumpsuit. The result made her look like Audrey Hepburn 2.0, and her sleek hairstyle will have us asking for the "Millie" at our next blowout. Keep reading to see the actress ace her beauty look on the red carpet.
OITNB's Dascha Polanco Gave Her Cat Eye a Futuristic Twist at the VMAs
Leave it to Dascha Polanco to wear full-blown chrome winged eye shadow to the VMAs and make it look good. The Orange Is the New Black star is no stranger to experimenting with bold looks on and off the carpet, and this makeup was no different.
Polanco's hair was pulled into a high wavy ponytail that kept the focus on her bronzed complexion and futuristic eye shadow. While we'd probably look like the Tin Man trying to copy her look, she definitely pulled it off. See it from more angles ahead.
Judging by Her Lipstick Choice, Jasmine Sanders Is Ready For Halloween
We have no hard proof that Jasmine Sanders is the type of human who decorates her home for Halloween as early as August, but the circumstantial evidence is strong. Judging by the matte oxblood lipstick she wore at the MTV VMAs, Sanders was in the spooky spirit.
The model looked like a gosh darn Halloween dream, pairing her dark lip with a dramatic topknot, moody metallic eye shadow, jet-black lashes, and thick brows. The final effect was equal parts spooktacular and totally gorgeous. She earned an open invitation to all of our Halloween parties for the rest of, well, forever.
We Knew Ariana Grande Would Look Fab at the VMAs, but We Didn't Know She'd Do THIS
One Summer beauty trend we did not see coming? Ariana Grande ditching her signature ponytail. Back in June, the "God Is a Woman" singer let her hair down while gracing the cover of British Vogue. She's had a smattering of pony-free appearances since then and just punctuated her new look at the 2018 MTV VMAs.
While turning the red carpet into an engagement photo shoot with fiancé (and songwriting muse) Pete Davidson, the singer let her hair hang low - really low. It fell down to her waist. For his part, Davidson repped the frosted tips he's had all Summer. Keep reading to see it in action.
Beauty-Lovers on a Budget Will Adore Awkwafina's Low-Maintenance Routine
Awkwafina, aka Nora Lum, may be a rising star in Hollywood thanks to films like Ocean's 8 and Crazy Rich Asians, but she still maintains a down-to-earth beauty routine among all the glitz and glamour. The 29-year-old actress told Today she was a tomboy growing up, so she didn't wear makeup until her 20s and now sticks to (mostly) drugstore products. She gravitates toward products like Dermalogica's face wash and Neutrogena's moisturizer for her dry skin, occasionally reaches for a Charlotte Tilbury dry sheet mask ($22), and at the recommendation of her Ocean's 8 costars, uses under-eye patches from Skyn.
Essentially, less is more when it comes to Awkwafina's beauty routine. She keeps her hair healthy with products like Dove shampoo and conditioner for men and by relying on simple styling.
"Don't blow out your hair every day. I don't use anything," she advised. "And I've never dyed my hair, either."
Awkwafina's desire to keep things natural isn't just out of convenience. She understands, especially with a film like Crazy Rich Asians, that young women will look to her as an example.
"For Asian girls, for me, beauty or not, if anything I don't give women - I'm not the type of person they see who gives them an unrealistic view of what they should look like. I like to keep it natural," she said. "It gives them the message to just be you. It's important. We're not one color in this country."

So, throw on a slap bracelet and turn up your Britney Spears Spotify station, because it's about to get fetch as hell.
I'm a Married Divorce Attorney, and Here's What I Want You to Know
While it may seem counter-intuitive, divorce attorneys have an endless tap of relationship advice as they frequently see what causes couples to end it all. Vikki Ziegler - divorce attorney, relationship expert, author, and former star of Bravo's Untying the Knot - offers insight on how to keep your relationship thriving and healthy.
I've spent a lot of time in front of couples on the brink of separation, and as a divorce attorney for 20 years, I've pretty much seen it all. When you've had a front-row seat to thousands of couples enduring marital strife, you learn a few things about what makes a relationship last and what brings it to a screeching halt. In addition, I've been through a marriage of my own that did not work out and come out on the other side stronger than ever, now happily coupled with the love of my life. In any marriage, there are going to be difficult times that will test the strength and fortitude of your relationship. But through my years in the courtroom and mediating couples living in the underbelly of the divorce system, I've identified a few key things that will assist couples in keeping their union alive and thriving. Remember, you can always learn from other people's mistakes, helping improve your own life and actually be lucky in love. But if you want to have a loving, long-term courtship, it's going to take some work. Read on for what this "Divorce Diva" wants you to know.
1. Engage in hobbies together.
You have no idea how often I see couples come into my office and say they have nothing in common anymore. They usually reflect on the early stages of their relationship, reminiscing on when they used to go to concerts or go hiking together, but now their interests have changed and the lack of spare time proves difficult to do activities that both parties enjoy. If your date night has turned into you both wordlessly watching television together, it's time to mix it up with a new hobby. Talk to your partner about things you've always wanted to do, and find something that works for both of you. Sign up for a cooking course, take a ballroom dance class, join the same CrossFit gym, do something that you both can get excited about! You'll have a crop of new things to talk about and a new community to be a part of, and getting excited about something with your partner will keep the spark alive and burning bright. Besides, what's sexier than seeing someone passionate about a hobby you can partake in together?
Stop measuring the success of your marriage against other people you know or it will steal the joy and wonder of your own relationship.
2. Stop comparing your marriage to others.
We've all heard the adage "comparison is the thief of joy," and in the age of social media, it's never been easier to compare ourselves and our marriages to other people's. However, what we see on the surface is not always an accurate depiction of what's going on inside the relationship. We know that (most) people don't post their failures on social media, but consider that the woman in your Pilates class who always talks about her husband's high-paying job might be leaving out that they've been in couples therapy for the past year and a half. I know this better than anyone because I see it every day - people lie about their marriages and gloss over messy details. Stop measuring the success of your marriage against other people you know or it will steal the joy and wonder of your own relationship.
3. Actively and unconditionally trust each other.
Trust is obviously a very important part of any healthy marriage. After all, it's what the foundation of your marriage is built on. When it comes to a solid relationship, actively trusting your partner is vital. What I mean by this is, if your partner says they are going to pick up milk, you have to trust that they are going to pick up milk. If your first inclination is to distrust or wonder whether or not he or she is lying, sit with that feeling for a minute or two. Do you actually not trust them, or are you getting worked up for the sake of getting worked up? Are you ruminating on a past discretion that you haven't resolved yet? Has nothing happened, but insecurity is taking a hold of your rational brain? If the issue lies with a past discretion, bring it up to your partner and consider seeing a mediator or couples therapist. If the issue lies with your insecurities, address this independently with either a mental health professional or a life coach.
Don't forget that you are a person outside of this relationship with unique needs and desires that need to be fulfilled in order to keep you happy.
4. Don't be stingy on self-care.
So frequently when I see couples in my office, they muse on how they have no time to do the things they like to do anymore. Like I said before, finding hobbies that interest both of you is important and will help keep the spark alive. However, I see way too often people, specifically women, who say they don't feel like they have time for themselves anymore and their whole life is spent working, inside the relationship, or taking care of the family if there are kids in the picture. Don't forget that you are a person outside of this relationship with unique needs and desires that need to be fulfilled in order to keep you happy. Indulge in your own form of self-care to rectify this! Buy some candles, do a face mask, go to that yoga class - make time for the things you say you don't have time for. Don't make anyone else responsible for your individual happiness. After all, you can't stay happy with someone else if you're not happy on your own.
5. Say what you want (seriously).
This is one I want to scream from the rooftops. If you're not happy or getting what you want out of your relationship, say it. Out loud. To your partner. In mediation sessions, I hear people say things like, "You've done xyz for this long and it's always really upset me." Then the other person looks baffled and proclaims, "Why didn't you say something earlier?" Seriously, no matter how long you've been in a relationship, no one can actually read your mind. If you have any source of contention, voice it to your partner (not just your BFFs). Communication about all matters of the heart is massively crucial to your overall happiness.
If you're not happy or getting what you want out of your relationship, say it. Out loud. To your partner.
Get naked about your finances. I know this is not a sexy topic, but being honest about your finances is really so important in maintaining a healthy relationship. I've said this before and I'll say it again. No one wants to get engaged and find out their new fiancé has been hiding $25K in student loan debt. If you both have decided to legally join your lives in the eyes of the state, remaining transparent about your income, debts, and all financial matters is the least you can do. After all, when you get married, you share everything, from the bedroom duvet all the way to your debt. That is, unless you have a prenup . . . more on that later. Being upfront may be awkward in the moment, but it will save you a lot of strife later.
6. Stop thinking prenups are only for the rich and fabulous.
Anyone who knows me knows I'm not only the "Divorce Diva," I'm also the "Prenup Princess." I am on a mission to change the stigma around prenups and a firm believer that every relationship should include a prenup. I am so passionate about this topic, I even wrote a book about it - The Pre-Marital Planner: Your Complete Legal Guide to a Perfect Marriage. People get nervous because relationships are emotional, and prenups are very much the opposite. However, if you own a business or real estate, are planning on receiving a large inheritance, have children from another relationship, etc., it may be within your best interest to have a prenup. Things do happen, and protecting yourself financially is something that I want all couples to consider. It's the 21st century; it's time to do some negotiating and take control of your financial future.
Even though I have been referred to as the "Divorce Diva," I really am rooting for love, and witnessing so many unsuccessful marriages has helped me to create a road map for navigating a successful relationship. At the end of the day, the most important things in any union are trust, honest communication, and making time for each other and yourself. However, I'd urge anyone who is struggling in their relationship to voice their concerns and consider seeing a professional who can help you sort out both of your feelings in a safe environment. Hopefully that should keep relationships moving toward the altar and marriages finding their way out of the courtroom.
You'll Start Toe-Tapping When You See How Easy It Is to Dress Like the Walmart Yodel Boy
It's basically impossible to forget the greatest meme of 2018. Mason Ramsey became an internet sensation, seemingly overnight, when he stepped out in a Walmart in Harrisburg, IL, to show off his yodeling chops. The 11-year-old country crooner won our hearts (and the hearts of celebrities everywhere) with his rendition of "Lovesick Blues" and ended up visiting The Ellen DeGeneres Show, performing at Coachella, and releasing his debut EP. Cool, we were totally doing those things in middle school too . . .
If you're in the mood to pay tribute to the boy who broke the internet, we have you covered. You'll have the "lovesick blues" no more once you've pieced together a Walmart Yodel Boy Halloween costume. Check out the essential pieces we've rounded up ahead that will make your costume complete.

Redownload Your Bumble App, Because Now You Can Turn Off Dating Mode
Pictured: Erin Foster, Bumble Founder and CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd, and Sara Foster
Bumble started as a dating app - where women always make the first move - but over the years, it's become a social networking app from all angles. In October 2017, it launched Bumble Bizz for professional networking, and its Bumble BFF feature helps women forge friendships. Until now, the three features were a package deal, so even if you were in a committed relationship, you still had to be on the dating app.
That all changed today, when Bumble began offering the ability to turn off dating mode, and significant others will no longer have to wonder, "Wait, why are you still on Bumble?!" We spoke to Sara Foster, who serves of head of creative for Bumble BFF and Bumble Bizz, along with her sister Erin, about the decision.
"We didn't want to alienate people who just want to come to Bumble for business and friendship," Foster told POPSUGAR exclusively. "Not everyone is comfortable having it on their phone, and we won't deny that."
She said that Bumble's goal is to help women network in all aspects of their lives, whether they are finding love, friends, or a job, and no matter what life stage they are in.
"There's a whole network of cool, smart, ambitious girls on BFF who are looking to get their squad together."
While meeting on a dating app used to come with a stigma, that's changing, if not entirely erased. "Now it's the norm," Foster says. "I have so many friends in committed relationships who met online." Now the idea of meeting friends on an app faces a similar stigma - but why should it? The ability to turn off dating mode will, Foster hopes, encourage more women to embrace the BFF and Bizz sides of the app.
"Making friends, especially as you get older, it's just hard!" Foster said. "Not everyone is as lucky as I am. I was born in LA, I still live in LA, most of my friends are still friends from high school. That is just not the norm. I don't know what I would do without my girlfriends. Female friendships are the backbone of everything."
I asked if Foster had any advice for creating a profile on Bumble, and she said staying authentic to yourself and not being too self-deprecating are best practices whether you're dating, making friends, or making business connections.
"I have friends who have gone into business with people they met on Bumble," Foster said. "There's a whole network of cool, smart, ambitious girls on BFF who are looking to get their squad together."

This Cat Asking Its Human Via Text Where Its “Blue String” Is Will Make You Actually LOL
My two cats have approximately 4,000 toys between them. About 15 are toys my boyfriend and I bought them at the pet store - jingly balls and furry mice - and the other 3,985 are various pieces of trash, such as shag carpet strands, plastic clothes tags, and empty Amazon Prime boxes. I'll give you one wild guess whether they prefer the toys or the trash.
And it appears as though we're not the only cat owners who have found this fact to be true. In a pretend text conversation between a human and its cat looking for its "#1 joy in life" (a blue string), the human tries as best as they can to understand why their cat is so distraught over losing a piece of string (that may or may not have been thrown away) when it has plenty of other toys.
Their conversation is so damn relatable, you'll actually laugh howl out loud.

These Are the 7 Highest-Paid Actresses in the World
Forbes' annual list of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood has been unveiled. Last year, La La Land star Emma Stone reigned supreme, raking in a cool $26 million for her Oscar-winning performance. She surpassed Jennifer Lawrence, who claimed the top spot in both 2016 and 2015, and who also found herself on 2018's list despite underperforming films like Mother! and Red Sparrow. But at the top of this year's ranking? Scarlett Johansson.
The 33-year-old actress earned $40.5 million in pretax earnings between June 1, 2017 and June 1, 2018. Last year, she appeared in Rough Night and Ghost in the Shell, the latter of which stirred up a whitewashing controversy. In 2018, she popped up in Isle of Dogs and Avengers: Infinity War, and recently found herself in hot water yet again after she announced she'd be portraying a transgender character in an upcoming film. With that project no longer in the works following a tidal wave of backlash, 2019 will see her in the fourth Avengers installment and an untitled Noah Baumbach film.

Rihanna's Documentary Is Getting Released Soon, and All I Can Say Is "Work, Work, Work"
Rihanna Navy, are you listening? We hope you're ready to see a more intimate side of your favorite superstar, because Battleship director Peter Berg is releasing a documentary about Rihanna.
In 2016, Berg revealed he was working on a Rihanna documentary styled after the 1967 Bob Dylan film Don't Look Back. He described it as an "unfiltered look into Rihanna's life and how she's ascended to become a global icon." He also said he liked the idea of looking at "a young artist at the top of her professional field," and that the project would be "much more of a character study than a music film." Now, fans finally have some answers about when it will be released.
"It really is kind of a pretty comprehensive profile of what goes in to making her this talent that she is," he told SlashFilm. Berg also said that "the movie will be out in about a month and half, two months we'll be able to start showing it."
Can that time just pass by already? We're ready to see Queen Riri do her thing!
This Is the Meaning Behind the Teal Leotard Simone Biles Wore at the US Championships
Simone Biles just made history winning her fifth US Championship on Sunday, becoming the first woman to do so since Dominique Dawes in 1994. Her vault routine would secure her US Championship title, but the biggest statement Simone would make at the meet was with her teal leotard.
On January 15, 2018, the eve of Larry Nassar's sentencing, Simone shared that she too had been assaulted by the former Michigan State trainer and USA Gymnastics team doctor. Many former and current athletes such as Aly Raisman and Simone have called out USA Gymnastics for enabling and covering up Nassar's inappropriate behavior, so Simone's leotard speaks volumes.
In a post-meet interview, Simone said she designed the leotard she wore throughout her second day of competition in January and explained, "Going into it, I figured I would look really good in this color, and then everything happened." She added, "It's like a teal-mint, and it is for the survivors. I stand with them," Simone said.

This 3-Year-Old Had His Birthday Party at a Waffle House, aka Leslie Knope’s Dream
Lawson Cooper's obsession with the Waffle House is so real, his mom Natalie planned his third birthday to not only have a Waffle House theme, but to take place right inside the family's local restaurant. Although Lawson would definitely be great friends with fellow waffle-lover Leslie Knope, the toddler enjoys going to Waffle House for reasons other than its fluffy waffles: to watch the cooks make his food and to "ogle all the waitresses' pins" on their aprons. So to channel all of Lawson's loves, his mom made sure the toddler's party had waffles, a cook uniform, and - you guessed it - pins.
Ashley Donahue of Emerald Creek Photography told POPSUGAR that she's always wanted to shoot at a Waffle House because it's such a big part of the South, and that "the staff was so, so sweet and accommodating," while Lawson posed for his photos in his mini uniform.
"He loved getting to dress up like a cook," Natalie told POPSUGAR. "He had the the gray button-down shirt, the black pants, the embroidered apron, and hat. He loved that his name tag said his name. You could tell he felt he was as big as the people that worked there. Our server that day was so nice to us, and made Lawson feel so special. He loved getting his picture taken with her. Since his party he's worn his pins (three of them, plus a name tag) every day. Today the Waffle House sent us a goody bag in the mail with a whole bunch of Waffle House swag, and his pin collection has gone from three to eight - he is in heaven! . . . I have no doubt he'll be a Waffle House fan for life!"
No Longer Silent: 7 Signs of Ovarian Cancer
With its recognizable symbol of the pink ribbon, we all know that October is breast cancer awareness month since this cancer has the distinction of being the most common cancer among women. September, however, is dedicated to raising awareness about ovarian cancer. Often referred to as the "silent killer," ovarian cancer is often detected when it is in the advanced stages, when the disease is largely incurable. But William Hamilton, MD, the lead researcher on a survey of symptoms of the disease, said, "Ovarian cancer is not silent; it's noisy. It's just we're not very good at deciphering the noise."
The survey of 212 women all diagnosed with ovarian cancer, ages 40 and above, revealed a pattern of symptoms. While these symptoms individually are common and could easily be signs of more common ailments, the collection of symptoms can act as early warning signals and lead to an early diagnosis. And early detection increases the odds of beating the disease. Here are the seven common symptoms:
- Abdominal distension
- Urinary frequency
- Abdominal pain
- Postmenopausal bleeding
- Loss of appetite
- Rectal bleeding
- Abdominal bloating
You might find it redundant that the list contains both abdominal distension and bloating, but medically speaking, they are different. Bloating comes and goes, but distension is "a progressive increase in abdominal size." In the US, bloating is the most persistent symptom and unfortunately a sign of many other health problems. Making both patients and gynecologists aware of the collection of symptoms is the next step in the fight against ovarian cancer.

I Tried Meghan Markle's Favorite Cleanser - and It's Worth the Hype
I write about Meghan Markle so often that sometimes I forget I am not the Duchess of Sussex myself. I know what went into her wedding-day messy bun, and I've meticulously searched the internet to find (then run out and buy) every single beauty product the royal knows and loves. Heck, I even know what her nuptial dressing room smelled like. So when I heard that one of Markle's favorite cleansers just got reformulated, I had to pull a Beyoncé and upgrade my own face wash routine, too.
Back in 2014, a pre-Harry Markle told Allure that she "really loved" the Tatcha Rice Enzyme Powder ($65). "It just sort of foams on your face and gives you a really subtle exfoliation," she said. Four years later, the J-beauty brand has revamped the item to be suitable for all skin types. There's a classic option for normal to combination skin; deep, which unclogs oily pores; gentle, to quell dry flakes; and calming, to soothe irritated complexions.

Whichever works best for you, Tatcha just made all iterations a lot more gentle by switching the base to a pH-neutral amino acid. This means that unlike harsh, traditional soaps, the formula that's responsible for Markle's sparkle won't strip your skin of its natural nutrients. I managed to get my hands on an early sample of the new cleanser the day after recovering from a gnarly breakout, so I got to test the validity of the brand's gentle claims.
After putting a pea-sized amount of this powder on my hands, I splashed just a bit of warm water onto it and rubbed it on my face for about eight seconds before washing off. Normally, I'm not crazy about scrubs, because I find them to be really irritating, especially over acne. But like Markle said, it lathered into a really soft, plush foam that felt both moisturizing and pore-clearing.
The morning after I tried it, I tiptoed to my medicine cabinet mirror afraid that I'd awake to finding myself a splotchy, red mess, because so many severe products can make me that way. And all I can say is - Markle, I never should have doubted you. I may not have that look-of-love twinkle that comes with marrying a foreign prince, but I also don't have any surprise breakouts, either. I'll take what I can get.
I Just Watched Coffee Roll Right Off of These Stain-Free White Jeans and My Jaw Is Still on the Floor
I'd learned of Old Navy's stain-free white jeans a while ago, but it wasn't until I was out with a messy baby on my hands that I thought about giving them a try. White jeans are admittedly something I've stayed away from lately - postpartum body changes coupled with the frequency with which I get spitup on me has put black trousers at the front of my closet - but I was excited to see if the "stain-free" component could hold up. The results? Unless you plan on jumping into a vat of wine, I'd rank these pretty high on the stain-resistant spectrum. Find out how they stacked up.
What It's Really Like When Your Grandparents Raise You
I must admit, I'm very lucky to have multiple parental figures in my life. I have two parents, a set of stepparents, and two sets of healthy grandparents that I love and adore. My parents had me at a very young age and, quite frankly, weren't nearly ready for that type of responsibility (especially raising a very determined kid like me). Naturally, my grandparents took over and picked up the slack, and it's fair to say that they were the ones that raised me.
That idea of who your parents are supposed to be is shattered, and it's incredibly painful.
I lived with my mother's parents until I was 17, then moved in with my father's parents and stayed with them throughout my adulthood. Throughout my years with then, I learned that there are pros and cons to being raised by your grandparents. The pros being that they know what they're doing, and they love getting another chance to play mom and dad. My grandpa even admitted that he loved when I moved in because it allowed him to have the relationship he missed out on with my dad. He's been through this and made all the mistakes as a young parent, so this is a fresh opportunity to do things better.
The main con is that you never truly have a "mom" or a "dad." That idea of who your parents are supposed to be is shattered, and, especially in my case having both of my parents still around, it's incredibly painful. My grandma even admitted that there were certain boundaries she didn't want to overstep my mother's authority on when it came to parenting me. She wanted to make sure I always knew who my mother was, but with each of them leaving space for the other to step in, it unintentionally left a lot of space for me to fill on my own.
Being raised by my grandparents allowed for me to become independent at a very young age. That, too, comes with its pros and cons, but ultimately, I'm stronger (and I like to think more mature) because of it. My grandparents also carry so much more wisdom paired with a more carefree attitude. They're advice comes without any BS, and often, lots of unapologetic humor.
I have great relationships with my grandparents. My grandmas are like my best friends that I watch The Real Housewives and Keeping Up with the Kardashians with (I have cool grandmas). When they're not sending me photos of family pets or the newest grandbabies, I'm teaching them how to upgrade their Instagram accounts. See, having a millennial in the house has its advantages for grandma, too! Most of all, we've bridged the generational gap and learned to appreciate life better, together.
I have chosen to make peace with my relationships with my parents (or lack thereof). My mom and I have a much closer relationship now, and my dad, I'm happy to see on holidays. I'm lucky to have so much love in my life that it far outweighs any strife. I have lots of mentors (even though I don't always choose to listen to them) and lots of support. What more could any kid ask for?
My Grandson Makes Me Feel Like a Kid Again, and I Love It So Much
For the past 16 months, I've been studying the world through the eyes of my grandson. Every Wednesday, he and I take on the world one little step at a time, and, I've got to say, the world looks pretty incredible from his pure perspective.
While I used to think a ball is something you just bounce, to him, it's something to be studied carefully, thrown to someone special, and brought on every little adventure around the house and in the backyard. It's a magical thing with endless possibilities. And while I'm used to passing other humans on the street and in the store, to him, they are all meant to be acknowledged, stared at, smiled at, waved at, and - sweetest of all - blown kisses to.
He reminds me weekly what life is really about - living it. Small inconveniences and daily stresses melt away, and I get to be a kid again.
Yesterday, as he and I sat at an outside table at Whole Foods sharing a snack, he struck up a conversation (if muttering one-syllable sounds count) with a man across from us. He saw cars going by, looked at the man, did his sign for cars, and said "vroom" with a smile. The man understood him fully, and they "discussed" the cars at great length. When he got up to leave, the man said, "Best lunch break I've had in a while." I couldn't have agreed more.
Life on a good day can be rough, and if it takes someone who's been on the earth fewer than 600 days to show me the beautiful side of things, I'm going to grab at it with everything I have. My grandson has taught me the full wonder of being outdoors again. Dirt is an endless source of fascination, and sometimes (if I'm not quick enough), something to shove into his mouth. Birds can never be caught. Front yards vary in design and are always worth exploring. And the sounds of outside are never-ending. Like him, I now feel the simple joys of everything around me that I haven't felt since I was a child.
When he sits in my lap as I read, I struggle to focus on the words because he smells so heavenly; a mixture of joy tossed with a hint of new baby. He brings color to the black-and-white pages. Boats, people, dogs - everything has a sound, everyone has a story, and every word is new. We roll on the floor, chase toy cars down the hallway, eat when we're hungry, and nap with the sense of a morning well-played. And then we'll start everything all over again a few hours later. Being with him is bliss.
And as a grandma, I have the freedom of not worrying about his homework, cleaning the house, prepping dinner, or waking up with him in the middle of the night. My biggest Wednesday decisions are deciding what park we should play at, if the weather's nice enough to go to the zoo, and if I should let him play with his new toy now or later. I appreciate this part of my life so much, because so many years were (and still are) regimented and controlled by work and other adult responsibilities.
He reminds me weekly what life is really about - living it. It's about watching him splash me with water and daring me not to laugh, hearing him ask me for just a few more pushes on the swing at the park, and feeling him grab my face to plant a sweet kiss on my nose. Small inconveniences and daily stresses melt away, and I get to be a kid again. My grandson fills my life with so much love and happiness, and I know our special bond is just getting started.
My Grandma Was My Maid of Honor, and It Set the Tone For My Whole Wedding
Choosing my 87-year-old grandmother to be my maid of honor was easy. With two loving marriages behind her and an obligation to give me unconditional love, she was a treasure trove of wisdom, advice, and perspective. While my mom and I navigated the treacherous waters of seating, floral, and lodging arrangements together, I discussed feelings, etiquette, and makeup concepts with the matriarch of our family. Having her there with us when we chose my wedding dress, and in the room with all the women as we had our hair and makeup done, added an extra level of rite of passage to these wedding milestones. Plus, I benefited vastly from her brand of deep honesty that only comes from years and years of chipping away at caring what people think of you and your opinions.
It was something special that only she and I got to share and something that we'll never get to have again.
Appointing her to the post took the pressure off my bridesmaids, who were now free to be a democracy. No one's feelings get hurt when the bride chooses her grandmother as her right-hand woman. It set the tone for the wedding and the wedding party: this would be a sentimental event, free from politics and hierarchies. It bled into my planning, and I eventually asked them to walk down the aisle together in a single-file, female-empowered line.
On the day of my wedding, my dashing younger cousin suited up to escort my grandmother down the aisle slowly, carefully, and with intention. I couldn't see them, but I heard the waves of appreciation and reverence ripple through the rows of guests. She wore an ivory dress and cascading strings of pearls like the ones I played with as a kid when we would empty her jewelry boxes and comb through the treasures. All the men abandoned their wives to dance with her at the reception. She was breathtaking and called herself "the oldest living matron of honor" in her wedding speech, which she gave barefoot while holding a glass of Champagne.
It was the beginning of a series of late-in-life events she never dreamed she'd live to see: the births of her great-grandchildren, a multigenerational cruise to celebrate her 90th birthday, a grandson's medical school graduation, a granddaughter's first purchased home, and a daughter-in-law's retirement. I am proud to have been able to give her some of these experiences as payback for years and years of her undying love and support.
As a person enters old age, it can sometimes feel like the ways to celebrate them are numbered, but I found the opposite to be true. I honored her on my wedding, and I make a conscious effort to continue to honor her every day.
