6 VMAs Moments You Probably Appreciated If You're an Older Millennial
For an older millennial - someone typically born between 1980 and 1990 - watching music award shows can be a glaring reminder of your mortality. I know I sound dramatic, but nothing has made me feel older in the past year than trying to tell the difference between Lil Xan, Lil Yachty, Lil Pump, and Lil Uzi Vert. And while watching the MTV VMAs on Monday night, I felt like I was finally understanding what it must have been like for those older than me, watching the same show in the late '90s and early 2000s and side-eyeing me for bopping along to the boy bands and pop princesses who were seemingly taking over the music scene. I found myself feeling particularly nostalgic for the VMAs of my youth: Britney Spears dancing with a python; Diana Ross jiggling Lil' Kim's boob; Fiona Apple telling the crowd that "this world is bullsh*t."
We're always going to feel strongly about the trends and pop culture moments of our adolescence. The "best" Saturday Night Live cast is usually going to be the one you watched when you were in high school, and the "golden age" of music is likely whichever age you grew up during (shout-out to the gangster rappers, bubblegum pop stars, and female singer-songwriters who influenced my own teen years). And as much as I enjoy a lot of the current popular artists who performed and presented on stage at the VMAs this year (you guys, I'm not a regular old millennial, I'm a cool old millennial), I was still hoping for some signs of the old MTV - before Teen Mom and YouTube personalities and having to distinguish between 20-year-old mumble rappers.
In small ways, MTV delivered on that. There were subtle nods to those of us old enough to remember cringing as Courtney Love threw her compact at Madonna during an interview with Kurt Loder (how '90s is that?) and cringing even harder when newlyweds Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley made out on stage. This year's show welcomed iconic musicians to perform, reunited the cast of a beloved reality TV show, and honored the career of one of our generation's true triple threats. Here are the six things I identified with while watching the VMAs as an old millennial.
Um . . . What Were Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande Whispering About at the VMAs?
Image Source: John Shearer/Getty Images for MTV
Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande had a pretty busy run during Monday night's MTV Video Music Awards. They both spent some time slaying the red carpet before separately hitting the stage to perform singles from their recently released albums - but none of that stopped the besties and frequent collaborators from catching up on small talk in the middle of the show. During the commercial break that followed Nicki's best hip-hop award acceptance speech, the two were seen having a pretty animated conversation with each other, one that included a little bit of giggling from Ariana and a whole lot of side-eye from Nicki. Naturally, the inquiring minds of the internet are now dying to know what this conversation was about.

- MTV (@MTV) August 21, 2018
Could they possibly have been talking about Tiffany Haddish's Fifth Harmony joke? Or maybe Nicki was telling Ariana who she ruthlessly shaded during her acceptance speech. Some fans assume the artists were gossiping about Travis Scott, who was seated relatively close to them. Nicki's most recent album, Queen, debuted at the No. 2 spot on the Billboard 200, behind Scott's Astroworld, and both artists made headlines after Nicki took to Twitter to allege that Scott's girlfriend, Kylie Jenner, was partly behind the success of his album after she promoted his tour via Instagram last week.
Nicki later cleared things up on her end and claimed that the comments she made about her album sales were mostly sarcastic, but by then, the internet had already taken this and ran with it. Once the rapper was seen via MTV's live stream having a seemingly intense discussion with Ariana, many assumed that the topic was Travis and Kylie.

Although - and hear me out on this one - it's likely that the friends were just having a conversation about being literal queens.

We'll likely never know exactly what the friends were talking about during Monday night's show, but we can all probably agree that we'd hate to be the person on the other end of that side-eye.
The MTV VMAs Were Full of Famous Celebrity Exes - Did You Notice?
We can all probably agree that running into your ex can be totally awkward, but guess what? It happens to celebrities, too! The MTV VMAs went down in NYC on Monday night, and they were full of famous exes. From Kylie Jenner and Tyga to Nicki Minaj and Safaree Samuels, we really hope the ceremony wasn't too awkward for these stars. In fact, one pair of exes even hung out together on the red carpet and will be reuniting for a long-overdue reboot - can you guess who they are? Keep reading to find out!

It's a 13 Going on 30 Reunion! Judy Greer Gave the Sweetest Speech to Honor Jennifer Garner
Jenna Rink, is that you? Jennifer Garner had a 13 Going on 30 reunion when she was joined by costar and friend Judy Greer at her Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony on Monday. To mark the celebratory moment in the actress's career, Jennifer's friends and family (including her three children) stood by her side, but it was the sweet moments with Judy that really hit us with a rush of nostalgia and happy tears. Judy took to the podium to deliver a speech dedicated to her longtime friend, and she teared up before she even began.
Judy said, "Fifteen years ago, someone paid me to be Jennifer Garner's best friend. In Hollywood, it's next to impossible to stay in touch with people after you finish a job because it's like Summer camp: you get so close, so fast, but real life happens after you wrap. . . . But from the minute I met JG at our first rehearsal for 13 Going on 30, I knew that I really didn't want that to happen." She went on to gush about how Jennifer is the "greatest, most loyal friend, an incredible mother, an amazing chef, an amateur farmer and beekeeper, so beautiful, and so stinking smart."
Jennifer looked on and flashed her signature smile in appreciation as Judy made the crowd laugh and tear up. "Even though I got paid all those years to do it, I'm so lucky to be your friend every day for free now," Judy concluded. Wow, could these two be a clearer definition of friendship goals? See the cute moments from Jennifer's big day ahead.
Is It Just Us, or Were These Moments From the VMAs Too Cringeworthy to Comprehend?
So, the VMAs happened on Monday night, and I'm still trying to figure out if it was a real show or if MTV was punking me for part of it . . . and I'm not the only one. There were so many crazy moments that went down, and to be fair, it wasn't all a hot mess. We saw some stellar performances - including Logic's "One Day" featuring Ryan Tedder and Ariana Grande's "God Is a Woman" - but they sadly didn't cancel out those bewilderingly awkward moments that left me wondering if we were all in a The Truman Show situation. Read on for the standout moments that really, truly happened on live TV.
25 Great Horror Movies on Netflix - All From the 2000s and Beyond
Horror movies are just plain scary. Whether it's gory, gross, or built from completely twisted storylines, there are some really frightening movies out there that will have you on the edge of your seat while you're watching - and have you checking all of the locks, closing all of the blinds and wrapping yourself up as tightly as you can in your blankets before bed.
While classic horror films will hold a special place in our hearts, and so will those scary movies that are just a little bit scary, some of these horror movies have been recently upping the ante on the "boo" factor. Check out these movies from the 2000s and see if they don't give you chills for days.
Crazy Rich Asians' Hairstylist Explains Exactly What Makes Hair Look "Expensive"
On the surface, the entire premise of Crazy Rich Asians sounds like a scene pulled straight from Pretty Woman: rich man meets independent, far-less-rich woman; they fall head over heels; some people just don't get it - you know how this ends. (It's worth noting that Constance Wu's character, Rachel Chu, is not in the same line of work.)
Yet, what makes this movie truly special isn't only in its all-Asian cast, but also that it depicts a not-so-far-fetched look into the life of Singapore's one percent. The divide between old money vs. new money vs. Asian natives vs. Asian-Americans is omnipresent, and if you couldn't tell by the fancy cars or $1.2 million jewelry, there may be another way to know: with the hair and makeup.
"New money people wanted to show off, so we made the hair and makeup very over the top. We could not have done that with Nick Young (Henry Golding)'s family. That side had a more classic look."
That was the job of the film's lead hair and makeup artist, Heike Merker. "We tried to differentiate the groups from each other," she told POPSUGAR. "With the new money people, they wanted to show off more so we made the hair and makeup very over the top. We could not have done that with Nick Young (Henry Golding)'s family. That side had a more classic look. The hair was perfect, and we never used too much makeup on a daily basis unless there was a party - but even then it was as if someone came in and did it for them."
When it came to lead actor Wu, Merker kept her beauty style on the minimalistic side, and then made it progressively fancier as time went on. "Rachel was just a normal working girl from New York; she didn't have fancy things, so we kept her makeup very natural in the beginning. Then when she traveled to Singapore, as she got to know the family members and got invited to the parties, we gave her more and more and more makeup. We also changed the hairstyle on her, making it more elegant."
As for what constitutes "expensive-looking" hair, she says it's simple: haircuts. "Rich hair is shiny. The ends are never dry. If you always cut your hair, the ends are always perfect." Wanna know how she kept the cast looking perfect while filming in the sweltering heat with 85 percent humidity? Merker is spilling all the tea ahead - and yes, it is crazy rich, indeed.

The Clean Beauty Skincare Purchase You Never Knew You Needed - but Do
Powder face masks exist for a reason - and it's not to dirty up your sink. While the spillable formula may not be a mask of choice for messy humans, there is a reason so many natural brands opt to produce one.
According to Jessica Morelli, founder of Palermo Body, "When you make a powder mask, you don't have to add in preservatives." This is great for clean beauty brands that only use natural ingredients. As Morelli told POPSUGAR, preservatives such as sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate are safe to put in liquid masks, but those ingredients are synthetic, or made in a lab.
How do powder masks work? When you mix in a liquid, the powder is activated. If you're a rule follower, you probably have only splashed water into your powder masks. That said, Morelli insisted that you shouldn't sleep on other activators. "You can add in honey, yogurt, or apple cider vinegar to address your individual skin condition," she said.
If you have dry skin, you might want to choose honey, as the humectant absorbs moisture and hydrates well. Those with oily or acne-prone skin might prefer using apple cider vinegar, which has an acidic quality that can rebalance acids on the face.
Yogurt works for a wide range of skin types, from oily to dry, and the dairy product contains lactic acid, which chemically exfoliates your face. Plus, you can pull it straight out of the refrigerator and onto your face for a cooling sensation. For that reason, Morelli suggested using it for soothing sunburns.

Amandla Stenberg Gets Matchy-Matchy With Her Girlfriend at the VMAs
Some people have been known to adopt the same look as their significant other after being in a relationship for a while (looking at you, Brad Pitt), and two people at this year's VMAs did just that.
Amandla Stenberg and Mikaela Straus have been reportedly dating since July, with Straus referring to Stenberg as her girlfriend in a Billboard interview, but we weren't ready for the sweet photos that emerged from their night at the VMAs. They turned up to the annual event matching in a way only beauty enthusiasts would appreciate: the pair wore matching orange-hued eye shadow and similar tousled hairstyles. The pair had the same shoulder-length hair and wavy texture, courtesy of Stenberg's hairstylist Lacy Redway.
Stenberg's makeup artist, Nina Park, used the Pat McGrath Mothership V: Bronze Seduction Palette ($130, coming soon) and a selection of pink-toned lip products. Ahead, get a closer look at the coordinating looks.
The Supplement That Could Help You Lose Weight, According to These Experts
When it comes to losing weight, there's no miracle pill or supplement that will magically melt off fat and transform your body; long-lasting weight loss is achieved through lifestyle habits, including eating well, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and managing stress. But in a quest to eat better and lose some weight, I kept seeing magnesium pop up over and over as a recommendation to take while on a diet, so I had to investigate why.
How This Practice Can Prevent You From Binge Eating and Help You Lose Weight
You're snacking on a bag of chips while watching a show. You look down at the end of the episode and realize that you've just eaten the entire bag. Or even if it's not that extreme, maybe you simply don't remember what you ate for breakfast today. It may not seem like a big deal, but it could cause you to unwittingly make bad food choices and/or overeat. That's where mindful eating comes in.
Mindfulness encourages you to be more present and aware of your thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations. When this concept is applied to food, it encourages you to be more conscious of what you're putting into your body (as well as environmental sustainability) and to be more in tune with your body's cues (aka whether you're hungry or full). Dr. Lilian Cheung, a nutritionist and lecturer at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, told Harvard Health that "mindless eating" could be contributing to our national obesity epidemic. On an individual level, being more mindful when you eat can improve your relationship with food and serve as an effective long-term weight-loss solution.
The whole idea is to pay attention to not only what you eat and how much, but what you buy and how you prepare it as well. In doing so, you become much more appreciative of food and you're less likely to overindulge. According to Healthline, it takes about 20 minutes for your brain to realize that you're full. So instead of scarfing down your dinner, chew and eat slowly and free your table of any distractions. This means not responding to texts until you're finished eating, not scrolling through Instagram as you eat, and not eating in front of a TV.
According to the Center For Mindful Eating, the practice consists of the following:
- "Allowing yourself to become aware of the positive and nurturing opportunities that are available through food selection and preparation by respecting your own inner wisdom."
- "Using all your senses in choosing to eat food that is both satisfying to you and nourishing to your body."
- "Acknowledging responses to food (likes, dislikes, or neutral) without judgment."
- "Becoming aware of physical hunger and satiety cues to guide your decisions to begin and end eating."
Apply this practice starting with your next meal!

These Are the 5 Thyroid Cancer Symptoms All Women Should Watch Out For
No matter how old you are, cancer is a scary thing to think about. Thyroid cancer in particular affects women at a younger age than you might expect. The standard female thyroid cancer patient is between the ages of 30 and 60, and people are likely to mistake cancer symptoms for something else trivial, which could result in a delay of treatment. This year, 40,900 women in the US will be diagnosed with thyroid cancer. It's the fifth most common cancer in women and the most common cancer in women ages 20 to 34.
Experts say the symptoms for thyroid cancer start out slowly and gradually worsen, so it's important to be aware of what the symptoms are so you can catch it before it gets worse. These are the most common thyroid cancer symptoms in women you need to know.
Flatten and Tone Your Belly With These 16 Workouts and Exercises
Belly fat is a trouble spot for lots of women. And it's not just for aesthetic reasons; belly fat, or visceral fat, is the one that surrounds your organs and is the most dangerous for overall health. To get rid of it, many people turn to quick fixes such as juice cleanses and endless crunches. Turns out, getting rid of belly fat is complicated and can't be done with exercise alone.
You can't spot-reduce body fat, so doing a thousand crunches a day won't guarantee that you'll lose the fat from your midsection. Although exercise can help you tone and build muscle, it won't get rid of the fat from a specific body part. To burn fat, you have to lose weight all over by burning more calories than you take in - this is achieved by eating in a calorie deficit and exercising, preferably with HIIT, which burns more calories, targets belly fat, and helps you achieve the afterburn effect.
Luckily, you can rev up calorie burn with certain workouts and tone your ab muscles with specific exercises. Here are some of the best HIIT workouts to torch calories and ab-focused strength moves to help you flatten your belly once and for all.

The Most Important Piece of Advice I Give to People Who Want to Go Vegan
I've been vegan for a few years and I've loved every second of my plant-based journey. I'm also a nutrition coach who helps clients change their eating habits so they can feel their very best each and every day. Yes, going vegan can be a tough transition, but only if you don't do it the right way.
There's a lot of guidance I give to clients and friends who are looking to go vegan, but there's one nugget of advice that trumps them all: make the changes gradually. You can't expect to see anything different if you try to give up everything in one fell swoop. I see too many people make that mistake. They swear they're giving up dairy or meat forever, and then three days later, they're craving a creamy yogurt so badly that they go overboard and eat too much ice cream.
Rather than going cold turkey, think about how often you eat meat. If it's once a day, cut back to four times a week. The following week, only eat meat two or three times a week, and so on and so forth. This allows your body to get used to the changes you're creating, and it will make it much easier to stick to it in the long run. Plus, you will start to notice the positive benefits as they gradually show up in your body and mind. You'll actually want to eat more and more plants as time goes on.
Is It Really That Bad to Eat Carbs at Night? Here's What 2 Dietitians Have to Say
Navigating the world of weight loss advice is no freaking joke. Everywhere you look, there is someone trying to sell you on the latest wrap, pill, diet fad, or shake. So, you might want to start with easy, widespread advice you've heard through the years: drink lots of water, get cardio at least a few times a week, and don't eat carbs at night, right? Right? After talking to a few registered dieticians, we're not so sure.
It's Totally OK to Eat at Night
Before getting into the carbs or no carbs discussion, you might want to know if eating anything at night could hinder weight loss or management. "I don't see eating at night as posing a challenge for weight management," said Tracey Grant, RDN, CWHC, of Whole Daily Life."A well-composed evening snack won't affect your progress any differently in the evening than it would elsewhere in your day."
Anna Hartman, RDN, of Food Smarts Nutrition, agreed. "For the vast majority of people, the time on the clock when we eat doesn't have a huge impact on how we digest and utilize nutrients, or how our bodies regulate weight." There are certain groups of people, namely competitive bodybuilders and professional athletes, whose performance-related goals can benefit from nutrient timing, but us normal people are going to see a bigger impact from the type of foods we eat than the timing of our meals and snacks.
Dinner or Late Snack Carbs Are Fine, Too, but There's a Catch
Should you stay away from carbs at night if you do choose to indulge in a post-dinner snack? Grant recommended a balance, including carbs, protein, and fat. "By including some of each macronutrient, you will have a more balanced blood sugar response (as opposed to a blood sugar spike), which translates to more effective use of that energy and better sleep. A blood sugar spike tells the body to store energy (which could end up being stored as fat if not used) to help bring blood sugar down, and these spikes can also contribute to internal inflammation."
Both experts advised that eating whole, minimally-processed foods, as opposed to refined foods like crackers, cookies, and candy, is the way to go. When we choose foods that are minimally processed and higher in fiber like fruits, veggies, whole grains (pro tip: whole grains have actually been shown to promote a good night's sleep), and legumes, the food is digested and absorbed more slowly - and we get more vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
"Our bodies do utilize carbohydrates more efficiently when we are more active (i.e., not when we are preparing for sleep). Knowing this, a large influx of carbs late at night, right before sleep, may not be used as efficiently as a high-carb meal consumed earlier in the day when we are active (after exercise, for example)," Hartman said. A better choice would be a low- to moderate-carbohydrate meal or snack made up of high-quality, nutrient dense foods.
You'll Want Your Meal to Be Balanced
Some of Grant's favorite evening snacks include "a small banana with a handful of nuts, a hard-boiled egg and a handful of berries, half of a sweet potato with cinnamon and nut butter, or a mug of bone broth blended with ghee and collagen."
Hartman's suggestions include the following:
- 1/2 a 100 percent whole wheat pita pocket with two tablespoons of hummus and a few baby carrots
- Slice of whole grain toast with one tablespoon of peanut butter
- Small sliced apple and 1/4 cup almonds
- 4 oz. of vanilla Greek yogurt topped with 1/4 cup sliced strawberries
- 1/2 cup low-fat cottage cheese, quark, or skyr with a sliced fresh peach
- 1/2 cup protein-fortified, plant-based milk with 2/3 cup whole-grain cereal
- 1/2 turkey sandwich on toasted whole-grain bread with 1/4 avocado
"If you find yourself snacking at night out of boredom, stress, or anything other than hunger, that is an opportunity for change. This nighttime grazing can add up to a lot of extra food intake over time, which can negatively impact blood sugar and hormone levels, and can contribute to unexpected shifts in body weight," Hartman said. If you truly are hungry, "Find a snack that is both enjoyable and nourishing. Pay attention to how various foods make you feel when you choose to eat them at night. Notice which ones are satisfying you, which ones settle well in your stomach, and which ones promote a good night's sleep," she added.
Here's How Long It Takes to Get a 6-Pack, According to This Celebrity Trainer
A six-pack may seem impossibly unattainable, but we promise you can get there with the right tips in your back pocket. As for how long it takes to see results, the answer really varies from person to person. It all depends on your body type and how much dedication you're willing to put in. According to celebrity trainer and BodyArmor Sports Drink spokesperson Don-A-Matrix, whose clientele includes stars like the Kardashians and Fergie, some may see changes in as little as a month, whereas others may need to stick to a strict regimen of diet and exercise for six months. Unfortunately, there isn't a single timeline that applies to everyone.
Personal trainer Lauren Clare always tells her clients that "abs are made in the kitchen." When it comes to decreasing body fat in your midsection, eating clean, whole foods and training regularly will help you make progress. Additionally, Lauren suggests working your abs in all directions, including flexion, extension, and core rotation.
Here are three moves that Don likes to incorporate into his ab workouts:
- Mountain/step climber: "Using a Bosu ball, hold a plank position, with the dome side of the ball on the floor. Pushing your hands down on the platform, draw one knee in toward your chest and then extend back into the plank position. Repeat for the opposite leg and alternate for 20 to 30 reps."
- Bosu crunch: "Place your lower back and butt on the Bosu ball. Bring your legs and chest upward while keeping your hands in a locked position on the floor. Repeat for 20 to 30 reps."
- Bosu twist: "Sitting on the floor with your feet planted, hold the Bosu ball in your hands and lean back to a 45-degree angle. Twist to one side and lower the ball to the side. Then raise the ball back up to the middle. Repeat and alternate sides for 45 seconds."
A Harvard Professor Calls Coconut Oil "Pure Poison"
Is coconut oil healthy? The popular tropical oil is a staple for anyone who follows keto, Paleo, or Whole30 or keeps up with wellness trends in general. But the hype over coconut oil has been controversial for years. After all, it's full of saturated fat, and the American Heart Association issued an advisory on the oil in 2017, claiming that a diet high in saturated fat contributes to a higher risk of heart disease.
Now, a Harvard professor agreed during a lecture at the University of Freiburg in Germany. Karin Michels, a professor at the department of epidemiology at Harvard's T.H. Chan School of Public Health, said despite its reputation as healthy, consuming coconut oil has health risks. In fact, she called coconut oil "one of the worst foods you can eat" and said it was "pure poison," according to Business Insider. In her lecture, she went on to say that there is no study that proves significant health benefits of coconut oil and the saturated fatty acids can clog your arteries.
So should we just throw out our jars of coconut oil immediately? Not exactly - the debate is still up in the air. Mark Hyman, MD, raves about the benefits of coconut oil, including balancing out your hormones to burning fat. And there has been research that the medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) in coconut oil are metabolized differently from other saturated fatty acids. Plus, the Minnesota Coronary Experiment, which was conducted from the late 1960s to early 1970s and found that saturated fat is terrible for heart health, may be out of date; a study in 2016 reevaluated the data that suggested swapping saturated fat for polyunsaturated fat had better health benefits. However, the reevaluation found that subjects' long-term health was actually worse off.
The bottom line: more research needs to be conducted on the potential health benefits and risks of coconut oil, but it should still only be consumed in moderation and not treated as the holy grail of health food. But if you are worried, go ahead and swap coconut oil for more heart-healthy extra virgin olive or avocado oil.
I'm a Trainer, and This Is the Exercise I Do to Strengthen My Back and Legs
Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Rima Brindamour
If I had to choose my favorite body part to train during workouts, it would be my legs. This probably stems from my background in soccer and track and field, but I can't help but love that burning feeling I get after doing walking lunges, sprints, and power cleans.
A few weeks ago, I took a HIIT class and decided to skip the kettlebell swings due to a nagging lower-back injury and do kettlebell deadlifts instead. During my second set of deadlifts, the instructor came over to me and told me to try a narrow stance deadlift. As soon as I completed my first rep, I felt my entire posterior chain light up, especially my hamstrings and butt.
I was extremely sore two days after my workout and couldn't figure out why, and then it hit me: it was the narrow stance deadlifts. It was a hurt-so-good feeling, which is why I'm sharing this move with all of you. Get ready to strengthen your back, glutes, core, and hamstrings with this deadlift variation.

Here's how to do it:
- Select a medium to heavy kettlebell; 15 kilograms (about 33 pounds) should be a good start, but feel free to go lighter or heavier. There should be about half a foot of space in between your feet.
- With your core engaged and your back flat, grip the handle of the kettlebell with both hands, holding it in front of you with your arms fully extended.
- Engage your core as you shift your hips backward, like you were going to sit in a chair, lowering the kettlebell down to the ground. Be sure not to round your back.
- Still engaging your core, drive through your heels and squeeze your glutes as you lift up.
- This counts as one rep. Complete three sets of eight reps.
