I Gave Up Caffeine For a Year, and I'm Actually More Energetic

In high school and university I was an absolute coffee addict. I used to down shots of espresso without feeling a thing. I had at least a cup a day, if not two or three - usually with four sugars and some milk. That all changed when I became vegan and began taking better care of myself. I have eczema, and in the process of healing my skin, I discovered that drinking coffee or tea seemed to make it worse. I decided to cut out caffeine for good.

It was only after giving up coffee that I realized how much I relied on it. I had grown accustomed to staying up super late, knowing that an energy drink, espresso, or cup of coffee would be waiting for me in the morning. By mid-day, I'd crash and have another. Eventually I built up such a tolerance that I'd come home from class and immediately fall asleep. Needless to say, those first days without caffeine were tough - everywhere I went, it seemed to be taunting me - but after a few weeks, the idea of having a cup of coffee barely crossed my mind.

There Are Other Ways to Refuel

I knew I had to make some changes, so I trained myself to go to bed two to three hours earlier. (Turns out, sleep is the best solution for being tired.) I started a new morning routine, practicing yoga or doing some quick stretches to get the juices flowing. At a cafe, I substituted my usual coffee for a smoothie or caffeine-free tea (chamomile is my favorite). And most importantly, I stopped wearing my exhaustion like a badge of honor.

For years I had felt that I needed to push my body to the limit to be good enough. Then I picked up a book called The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff, in which Taoist principles are explained through the beloved cartoon. In one chapter, Hoff writes about the "Bisy Backson," someone who's constantly doing something, who never has a moment to waste. He notes that the Bisy Backson feels important and productive, but their actions are actually counterproductive, because they only cause unnecessary stress. If I wanted to feel better without caffeine, I had to change my mindset, too.

How It Feels to Be Caffeine-Free

For all its benefits - including lowering a person's risk for a number of diseases - coffee didn't agree with me. When I quit caffeine, my eczema healed, leaving behind soft, smooth skin. I slept better and felt more rested without needing an inappropriately timed nap. I got my energy from even healthier habits, like exercise. I drank more water. I no longer felt anxious and jittery.

It's been a year and a half since I cut caffeine completely, and now that I'm feeling stronger, I allow myself to have some tea or coffee-flavored chocolate once every couple weeks. I still haven't had coffee - not even an energy drink or soda - but I also rarely crave it. I know this: If I ever do drink it again, I'll be much more careful about how.

Confused What Sugar Alcohols Actually Are? This Dietitian Explains

Grabbing a sugar-free protein bar or sugar-free candy may seem like a healthier option; you'll save calories from the lack of sugar, won't experience blood sugar spikes, and it's (usually) safe for people who are keto or have diabetes. But what exactly are the sugar alcohols used instead? They're different from the traditional sweeteners we think of (stevia, sucralose, aspartame, etc.), but still add zero to minimal calories.

Sugar alcohols are naturally found in some fruits, vegetables, and mushrooms in small amounts explained Kristin Koskinen, RDN. But the most common ones are found in processed foods to add sweetness without the calories. Sugar alcohols are a carbohydrate with a unique chemical compound that's not quite sugar, but not quite alcohol.

"Different sugar alcohols include sorbitol, mannitol, maltitol, and lactitol; the '-ol' is what tells us it's an alcohol, though not to be confused with ethanol [grain or drinking alcohol]," Koskinen told POPSUGAR.

Although they typically have zero to a couple calories per serving, they are poorly digested, which can have a laxative effect, she explained. Since sugar alcohols aren't completely digested, they become a food source for your gut flora, which metabolize the sugar alcohols and produce short-chain fatty acids and gas. If eaten in excess, people may experience bloating, flatulence, or stomach discomfort - not necessarily pleasant.

And while the negative side effects make sugar alcohols not seem worth it, they are considered safe when eaten in moderation. Currently, there hasn't been a set recommendation for a daily intake, but if you're worried about digestive issues, it's best to eat them in moderation. Check the label for any of the "-ol" ingredients, and luckily, most packaged food now contains grams of sugar alcohols on the nutrition label.

Overhydrating Can Be Dangerous - Here Are the Side Effects

"Make sure to drink a lot of water" - we've heard it from our parents, coaches, doctors, and friends, but is it possible to drink too much water? In 2007, a woman in California died of hyponatremia or water intoxication, after taking part in a radio station's water-drinking contest. Cases like this one are rare, but it is important to be cautious of drinking an excessive amount of water in a short period of time.

We asked a dietitian for the facts behind how much you should and shouldn't be drinking.

There's Such Thing as Too Much Water

Water intoxication occurs because drinking an abnormally large amount of water flushes the system and causes sodium levels in the bloodstream to drop to a dangerously low level, said Liz Weinandy, registered dietitian at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. The body needs adequate sodium to regulate blood pressure as well as a number of important functions, such as muscle contraction. Hyponatremia is extremely dangerous and can lead to unconsciousness, coma, and ultimately death.

The Symptoms Include Nausea and Headaches

Getting to a state of hyponatremia is difficult, Weinandy told POPSUGAR. To reach the point of water intoxication, "a person would be drinking so much fluid that they would feel nauseous and they might vomit," she said. Other symptoms include headache and lethargy.

Feeling sick while drinking too much water is part of the body's system of checks and balances that works to prevent us from unknowingly harming ourselves, she said. "The thirst mechanism will kick in when our body needs more fluids, and when we've had enough or a little bit more than enough, the mechanism that makes us repel against drinking any more will also kick in." Always listen to your body and don't force yourself to drink more water if doing so is making you feel ill.

If you do experience any of the mentioned symptoms after drinking a large amount of fluid, you could be overhydrated. At that point, it's crucial to stop drinking and immediately seek treatment.

Your Limit Depends on a Few Factors

There's no universal cutoff for how much water you can drink before it becomes unhealthy. The limit for each individual person depends on gender, age, activity level, and more, Weinandy said, but staying in tune with your body's signals is key to avoiding overhydration. If your urine is nearly clear, you're adequately hydrated and don't need to drink more, she added. Pacing yourself while drinking water will also help keep the body in balance. Hydrate before, during, and after a sporting event to avoid fluid overload following exercise.

For athletes who are losing a lot of electrolytes through sweat, it's important to throw a sports drink into the mix. This will help replace necessary electrolytes such as sodium and potassium, Weinandy told POPSUGAR.

In cases of extreme thirst, call your doctor before accidentally consuming an amount of water that could put you at risk for hyponatremia.

Follow the 8 Ounces a Day Rule

The amount of water you need to stay properly hydrated also depends on gender, age, and activity level, Weinandy said, but eight glasses at about 8 ounces each is sufficient for the average person.

But rather than following strict guidelines, Weinandy again recommends listening to your body. "I always tell people you should be drinking enough fluid to where your urine is really pale colored," she said. "Aim for straw colored or lighter."

This Equinox Trainer's Fat-Burning, Bodyweight HIIT Workout Only Takes 10 Minutes

Despite what you may have heard, you don't need to spend hours and hours at the gym to tone up, shed fat, and feel amazing. Martel Martellus, NASM-certified trainer at Equinox, recommends doing HIIT (high-intensity interval training) sessions when you're short on time and want to get in a good workout.

"HIIT workouts can help you burn a lot of calories in a short amount of time," Martel told POPSUGAR. "They also keep your metabolic rate high after your workout so you burn extra calories, even after." That means you'll burn more calories throughout the day, long after you've wrapped up your sweat session.

Not only does HIIT equal more calorie burn, but "it adds as a post-exercise appetite suppressant," Martel said. "It allows for higher levels of fat oxidation in the muscles, which basically means that your lipid molecules (fat cells) are broken down into smaller sizes and used for energy rather than excess storage, which contributes to weight loss." Sounds good to us. Where do we sign up?

I did a HIIT workout with Martel last week, and it was a tough one. We did seven different exercises for 20 seconds and rested for 10 seconds before moving onto the next one. You go through all the exercises once, rest for 60 seconds, and repeat two more times for a total of three rounds. That only equals 10.5 minutes of work. You can do anything for 10 minutes! And the best part is, you don't need any equipment for this session.

Here are the exercises, and descriptions for each one are below.

  1. Split lunge jump + squat
  2. Plyometric push-ups
  3. Mountain climbers + burpee tuck jump
  4. Shuffle + curtsy lunge
  5. Reverse burpee
  6. Lateral hops
  7. Split lunge jumps

These 5 Foods Might Be Causing More Than Tummy Problems - They Might Be Giving You Bad Skin

You've heard that old saying that goes "you are what you eat." While this saying cannot be taken literally, it is important to understand that everything we eat - whether it is healthy smoothies or green juices, fast food burgers or ice cream cones - does hold the power to affect our bodies in different ways.

"Your diet is the number-one source for skin trouble," says Joanna Vargas, celebrity facialist and founder of Joanna Vargas Salon and Skincare Collection. "Most people don't realize that skin directly correlates to our digestive system. If we eat something we can't digest or have trouble digesting, the body will try and use your skin to detox. That's why we break out after eating certain foods."

Studies have shown that there is indeed a link between dermatology and nutrition, revealing that certain diets can cause skin to react by causing inflammation, acne, dryness and more. With this in mind, here are five of the worst foods you can eat for your skin, according to experts.

The Queen Hasn't Worn Pants in Nearly 50 Years - Here's Why She Did

The British royal family is a fashionable bunch, and the most fashionable one of all? Well, Elizabeth II of course. The British Monarch is no stranger to a fashion show, and just like Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, she puts a lot of thought into her outfits, meaning there are almost always reasons for why she does (or doesn't) wear certain things. But there's one thing the queen absolutely never chooses for royal engagements: pants.

The one and only time the queen wore trousers on official duty was during her tour of Canada in 1970 with Prince Philip, nearly 50 years ago. She wore a matte silk pantsuit by designer Ian Thomas in an effort to modernize her look. Clearly, she didn't favor slacks, as she hasn't worn many pairs since. You might have spotted her wearing the staple during leisure time or riding her beloved horses, but she won't wear them on duty. And you certainly wouldn't find her wearing jeans like Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle.

The queen likes to keep her style simple and practical, but she doesn't lack a flair for fashion, particularly when it comes to colors. You'll often see her in a brightly colored coat with a matching hat, stylish handbag, and her go-to loafers. She chooses this tried-and-tested ensemble so often for one simple reason: so the public can easily recognize her.

Princess Beatrice's Shoe Closet Is Better Than Meghan Markle's - and I'm Not Saying This Lightly

Princess Beatrice might hang out with Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, but her style is on a whole other level. Princess Diana Loved This Brand So Much, Even Kate Middleton Has Become a Fan

It's been over two decades since the untimely death of Princess Diana, but her fashion choices are still as relevant today as they were then - just ask Kate Middleton. Over the years, the Duchess of Cambridge has more than once been compared to her mother-in-law, most notably because of their eerily similar style.

While Kate is known for her love of specific designers such as Alexander McQueen, Jenny Packham, and L.K. Bennett, the mother of three also regularly turns to Catherine Walker, a fashion house which Diana had a particularly close relationship with. In fact, some of the late Princess of Wales's most iconic outfits were created by the brand, a few of which still take our breath away.

These days, Kate can often be spotted wearing Catherine Walker dress-coats, which of course never goes unnoticed. Will Meghan Markle also start wearing the brand as a way to honor her husband's late mother? Only time will tell. In the meantime, read on to get a closer look at the times both Kate and Diana put their trust in the brand.

I Discovered This Organization Hack by Accident, but I Can't Recommend It Enough

It all started by accident. I was given a large wallet for my birthday, but I prefer small bags, and my new wallet didn't fit. So I invested in a little card case that could live in my going-out crossbody bags. Then I got lazy. My ID and a credit card were already in my card case, and I didn't feel like constantly transferring them back and forth. I only take one credit card when I go out in case something happens or gets lost, and I have a passport card that acts as an alternate form of ID. So basically, I have two fully functional wallets. Each contains at least one credit card and one form of identification.

This system works so well for me, I can't believe I hadn't thought of it sooner. I never worry about losing my wallet anymore, because I know that if I do, I have another one ready to go. This all came to fruition a couple of weeks ago, when I was traveling. I left my card case at a friend's house and wouldn't be able to get it for a week. Instead of panicking, I remained calm because I knew that I had my big wallet at home and could use that until I was able to retrieve my card case. Seriously, if you want to be prepared and save yourself a boatload of stress, invest in two wallets. Just keep reading to shop both big and small wallet options.

The Craziest Way to Cook Bacon So It's Simultaneously Crispy and Chewy

Bacon is traditionally cooked in an oven, over the stovetop, or in a microwave, but what happens when you air-fry it? Air-what, you may be thinking? Air-frying is exactly as the name sounds. An appliance about the size of a slow cooker contains a drawer with a metal mesh bottom for the food. The appliance blows hot, dry air on food to fry it with little to no oil. This trend took 2016 by storm thanks to celebrity endorsements from Gordon Ramsay, Paula Deen, and Oprah Winfrey, so what's the dang fuss all about? I busted out a Philips Digital Airfryer ($250) and a package of bacon to find out.

Having no clue how to air-fry, I watched a YouTube video on how to air-fry bacon and followed these instructions. However, I ended up with steamed bacon once the cook time was complete. It resembled deli ham more than bacon, and the fat from the bacon turned translucent and gelatinous. Perhaps this is the preferred method to cook bacon in Europe, but for me, I like my bacon crispy. So I cranked up the heat and kept cooking, shaking the basket occasionally and tripling the cook time, until I ended up with perfectly caramelized strips. I'm talking evenly cooked with no burn spots. Bacon never looked better.

But looks can be deceiving; the taste test would reveal the bacon's true tastiness or not. Remarkably, the bacon had a thin, crisp exterior that yielded to a fatty, chewy interior. I've never had bacon quite like this. The bacon also retained its size prior to cooking and did not shrink at all. The cleanup was a breeze too. I poured the extra bacon grease into a dish for later (it too was pure fat with no black char bits that you find when cooking bacon in an oven or on a stovetop) and proceeded to scrub down the drawer, which proved to be an easy feat.

Feeling confident about my air-frying skills, I proceeded to attempt apple chips and failed horribly. I mean, the apple chips burned and stuck into every crevice of the grid bottom. It was a nightmare to clean up with no reward of apple chips at the end. I know there's a learning curve to a new cooking device, so I'll try again. I'm dying to learn how to make french fries and fried chicken. Those will be my next attempts!

The 9 Best Texturizing Sprays That Will Give You Model-Off-Duty Hair

If you've always been hesitant to try a texturizing spray on your hair, now is the time to branch out. Summer is great time to experiment with styles without the rain and wind that comes with Winter. Consider the product a marriage between dry shampoo and hairspray - it's meant to revitalize and give your hair a little extra oompf if it's lacking body.

Texturizing spray can be used throughout the day: in the morning to create volume, as a midday pick-me-up to give life to flat hair and even to smell nice (depending on the brand you get, they usually have a perfume-like scent). Just spray it all over (not just at the roots), scrunch or fluff your hair to define it, and you're done. You won't believe how much of a difference it makes - the thickness is visibly noticeable. Take a look at our favorite texturizing sprays and try one for yourself.

I've Been Searching For the Perfect Vampy Fall Lipstick, and This New Release Is My Answer

As a beauty-lover, I majorly lean into seasonal makeup looks. I'm all for pastel eye shadows in the Spring, bronzy skin in the Summer, and dark eyeliner for Winter. Clearly, I can't wait to wear a rich, bold lip daily when Fall rolls around.

I'm quite particular about which lipsticks to use - the formula can't be drying, yet it should have serious staying power. If I can bite into a sandwich at lunch and not need to reapply, it passes the test. I have tried out dozens of newly released options, but my current favorite is Lipstick Queen Method in the Madness Lipstick ($25) in Manic Mauve. The latest product from the brand has a marble effect, so no two swipes of the lipstick are alike; they blend together into a complementary shade.

No two swipes of the lipstick are alike; they blend together into a complementary shade.

The deep plum and mauve hue will flatter a variety of skin tones. Plus, the ultramoisturizing formula includes vitamin E so your lips won't dry out. You can lightly dab the lipstick on your mouth for an understated daytime look or layer it on for a vampy finish ideal for evening. Because the color is a statement-maker, I like to keep the rest of my makeup understated and allow for the lipstick to be the focal point.

Beyond being an excellent lipstick, the tube has a gorgeous design on it. It's the type of product I will proudly display on my vanity. If you're interested in giving this lipstick a try, I'll let you in on a secret: it's in this Fall's POPSUGAR Must Have box. You get over $300 worth of products for only $75, so you would be snagging the product plus much more for a great deal. It seems like an obvious choice to me. You deserve to treat yourself.

I'm Not a Huge Fan of Pumpkin Spice, but This Mask Made Me a Believer

While I'm not a pumpkin spice latte hater - drink what you want to drink, people - the quintessential Fall beverage is not my vice of choice. (I'm more of a mulled wine girl.) It's not because I don't love the comforting mix of cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice, but my face doesn't agree with my taste buds. Whenever I slip into a flannel and over-the-knee boots to indulge in a PSL, the next day I wake up to some surprise breakouts.

Luckily, the enterprising folks behind Savor Beauty decided to cash in on my unfortunate spiceovers with the new Pumpkin Enzyme Peel ($80). Despite it being approximately 108 degrees in my NYC walk-up, I decided to test this mask for myself one sweaty Summer night. Savor isn't the first brand to celebrate the beauty benefits of our favorite gourd, as Peter Thomas Roth and Eminence make their own pumpkin peels. The antioxidants and enzymes inside of pumpkins act similarly to AHAs, which increase cell turnover in the skin. Translation: it makes you glow, cold weather be damned.

Though you're supposed to swipe on this peel via a brush, spa-style, I just globbed it all over my face with my bare (but clean!) hands after removing all of my makeup. It won't form a clean, smooth layer à la a face mask, but that's OK, because you won't keep it on long enough to get a requisite #selfcare selfie. I was able to use this peel during a commercial break on my local news, and after about a minute, my skin started to tighten and tingle - there was also a bit of a sting. That's because the peel contains five percent lactic acid, which can sometimes feel irritating. Luckily, when I rinsed off the peel, there was little redness - only brighter skin. As an added plus, the stuff reeks of PSL goodness, so be sure to take a few deep breaths before splashing it all away.

I went to bed with my face feeling fresh and clear, and despite getting a robust four hours of sleep, my skin looked like it got a full eight. I bet I'll be using this baby once a week until at least Thanksgiving, so if you're stressed about Summer ending, this seasonal mask will turn that frown upside down.

My 3-Year-Old Is Sneaking Around, and This Is What I'm Doing About It

"My knee is sticky," my daughter said with a smirk on her face. She's 3 years old and feisty.
She was in her bed, squirming like a toddler mermaid trying to get out of her water prison. It was naptime, which at my house means the lights are off, the kids are in bed, and I better not hear a sound. Though I often meet snags on this curvy road, it's a sacred time of day which I fight to enforce. Still, in that sticky knee moment, I knew it was time to postpone my desire for silence and listen to my daughter.

I touched her knee and found that she wasn't lying - she was very sticky. I turned on her light and told her she needed to show me what she had put on her leg. In the recent past, it had been Neosporin, Vicks VapoRub, my deodorant, and my cherished All Good coconut body lotion. And just two days prior, my daughter had taken a bag of Starburst minis to her bedroom and ate the entire thing by herself. The candies were meant to be shared with her brothers, but she had snuck away and eaten the whole bag in blissful solitude. Something about her bedroom was making her feel like she could sneak around and do whatever she wanted. This had to stop.

Something about her bedroom was making her feel like she could sneak around and do whatever she wanted. This had to stop.

She got out of her bed, pranced over to her pink princess tent, and gleefully opened the door-flap to reveal the bottle of honey I had left on the kitchen counter that morning. The floor of her tent was sticky. I was furious, but I managed to keep calm. I emptied her tent, leaving her toys and stuffed animals homeless on her bedroom floor. I folded the tent, walked it out of her room and outside to the trash can, and shoved it in. I wasn't trying to be spiteful. It's just that I knew the tent had to go, and since I wasn't going to scrub the honey out, I got rid of the whole mess instead. My daughter had a second princess tent in her room, and I took that one out, too. Since it wasn't dirty, I simply put it in my closet.

I once thought a princess tent would be a joyous thing for my daughter. I thought it would be her fort, a hideout from her brothers, or at least an amusing covering in which she could play and imagine for hours at a time. I thought it was going to be something special, but it had become something else entirely. Somehow, my daughter thought that she could sneak around and hide her disobedience inside those pink polyester walls. No more.

She's still young, but these are the years when foundations are established. I'm not a perfect parent, and I'm not in any way sure that taking her tents out of her room is the ultimate solution. It's just the logical consequence. I'm still amazed that she didn't throw a fit or put up a fight for her tents. Instead, she stayed in her room and quietly fell asleep. I think she knew she was wrong. My husband and I have both told her on numerous occasions that she's not allowed to take food to her room, but my question was and still is, how do I know she understands what I'm saying when I took away her tent?

Since that sticky knee incident, she's only asked about the whereabouts of her tent once. I told her that while one is in the closet, I had to throw the other one away because of her sticky honey makeover. "Oh," she said with a slight nod, her big eyes staring like she was trying to imagine what this meant. She had no other questions, but mine continue. Will she keep sneaking around? Did I do the right thing?

While my daughter hasn't been sneaking around (that I know of) since I took away her large hiding spots, the jury's still out on how I really feel about it. I want her to be able to have her own space and places that she can call her own, but I also don't want her taking advantage of that and using them to disobey me and her dad. Maybe I can put the tent back in her room someday soon, but for now, she's not there.

8 Books That Will Help You - and Your Kids - Better Understand Bullying

One of the hardest things about dealing with bullying as an educator or as a parent is that you don't always see it. Sometimes it can happen on the school bus, on the playground, or online, and as much as you want to be able to catch it all or rely on students to tell you about it, a lot of it goes unseen and unreported. Since bullying is unfortunately so prevalent (somewhere around 27 percent of all kids get bullied at some point during their school years), it's important to discuss these aggressive behaviors with children. One of the many ways you can do that is through reading. Here's a list of effective books that will help drive the conversation with your child (or student) about treating others compassionately.

5 Tips For Getting Your Kids Excited to Dress Themselves

It seems that a baby's early years seem to fly by - one minute they're newborns leaving the hospital, the next they're already walking and getting into the kitchen cabinets. Although a child growing up can be bittersweet, it can mean at least one positive thing: they're becoming more independent. And one aspect that usually comes with a toddler's newfound independence is they begin to want to learn to dress themselves, a simple task that can make hectic mornings a bit easier for any parent. Keep reading for five helpful tips to encourage them to get into this routine (and pick the right clothes).

Does My Kid Have Anger Issues? These Are the Signs to Look Out For

Temper tantrums are a part of most children's (and therefore most parents') lives, no matter how much we'd love to wish or rationalize them away. Whether your kid is melting down because you cut their morning toast the wrong way or getting angry for reasons you can actually wrap your head around (homework frustrations, an abnormally early bedtime), tantrums are as rough on a parent as they are on your little one. They can also be even rougher as your child leaves the toddler years behind, gaining both strength and a greater arsenal of ways to lash out.

But when does a tantrum cross the line from normal child behavior to a danger zone that needs further attention? The general answer is that there is no one answer (welcome to parenting!). It's fairly common for kids who struggle with their emotions to lose control in a scary way; hitting, screaming, throwing things, and biting might all be on the emotional-outburst menu. But if your child is repeatedly lashing out, being defiant, or acting aggressively, posing a risk to themselves or others or wreaking havoc at home or at school, it might be time to take a closer look at their anger, its triggers, and your reactions.

When your child is lashing out over and over again, they're most likely telling you that they are overwhelmed and distressed and can't figure out a constructive way to manage those emotions. And as parents, it's our job to help - or to find a professional who can. Here's where to start if you're worried about your child's anger.
