PSA: Kylie Cosmetics Is Coming to Ulta
While all of us were going about our pre-Labor Day weekend work-cram, Kylie Jenner just dropped a beauty bomb on us via Twitter. The new mom revealed that her line, Kylie Cosmetics, will arrive at Ulta stores around the country just in time for the holidays.
I'm so excited to let you guys know that @KylieCosmetics will be coming to all @ultabeauty stores around the country this holiday!... More to come...
â€" Kylie Jenner (@KylieJenner) August 30, 2018
Considering that the line has never been in a mass retailer, and only available online and at a few Kylie Cosmetic stores, this is a certifiably big deal. Now that the products will be available in Ulta, consumers will get to see best-selling liquid lipstick shades Candy K, Koko K, and more in person before they buy.
While we wait for King Kylie to reveal more details, we've picked out some of our favorite products to stock up on in the meantime.

How Hollywood Hairstylists Adapt Beauty Looks From Book to TV
The phrase, "The book was better," has become a common cliché when discussing films and TV based off of novels. But one thing that is probably always done best on the big screen? Hair, as studios enlist stylists and makeup artists to bring characters to life through their appearance. We enlisted hairstylists, who both worked on this Summer's blockbuster film and TV series, respectively, to get a peek into that process.
Do the Research
According to Heike Merker, lead hair and makeup artist for Crazy Rich Asians, based off of the book of the same name by Kevin Kwan, it's obviously imperative to read both a film's script and its inspiration. "There was more information in the book than in the script," Merker explained. "To feel the character more, I had to get their backstory from the book."
Patti DeHaney was Amy Adams's personal hairstylist on the set of HBO's Sharp Objects, and she turned to Gillian Flynn's thriller to understand the relationship Camille, Adams's character, has to her hair. "Camille was a beauty of her small town when she was a teenager," DeHaney said. "In the novel, you get to understand the effects that feeling unloved and being the outcast of the family has on her."
Make Bold Choices
Both hairstylists said that part of their job is to manifest a character's personality through how they look. In Crazy Rich Asians Fiona Xie plays Kitty Pong, a social climbing actress, and she sports a teased-to-the-heavens ponytail to boot. "In the book, Kitty is described as a bit crazy and overdone," Merker said. "That's her character, so we tried to make her really look like it in the film. It's not like there was always a description of what everyone's hair looked like in the book, so we drew on their personalities to inspire the looks."
Amy Adams has become synonymous with her red hair, and the crew of Sharp Objects wanted to work with her natural color. "There was never any talk of changing [Adams] hair color for Camille," DeHaney said. Since the show deals with somber topics such as murder and self-harm, DeHaney admitted they didn't want Adams' hair to be too "pretty." Because of this, they didn't heat style or straighten Adams' hair. "We took advantage of that airy, textured look," she said.
Judge a Hairstyle by the Cover
According to Merker, no hairspiration is too obvious. "We looked at the cover of the book, and thought it would be a good hairstyle for Astrid," she said, referencing the Jackie O-like character played by Gemma Chan. "With the dress and everything, [the bun] was perfect for her."
This Is How a Beauty Mogul Does Hair and Makeup For Her Wedding
When ecoconscious beauty entrepreneur Josie Maran first met her husband David Belle, she was in her most natural state: it was at a party on her farm in Pennsylvania, where she roamed barefoot and barefaced, her unkempt curls blowing freely in the wind.
It makes sense, then, why she'd want to extend that intimate, carefree vibe to their wedding day taking place at the same location so many years later, despite her insurmountable access to products and industry pros. "Some people may have expected me to do a full glam look, but the real me is all about being minimal, feeling good, and not being stressed about makeup or maintaining my look," Maran said.
Unexpected, as it seemed, was exactly what they were going for: the private ceremony took place at precisely 6:30 in the morning, followed by breakfast on hay bales, cake, mimosas, canoeing, naps, and (eventually) dinner. This goes for her day-of hair and makeup, too - which, as you can see for yourself below, would be pretty damn hard not to l-o-v-e.

How 1 Woman's Tragic Death Highlights a Scary New Plastic Surgery Trend
A 31-year-old British woman named Leah Cambridge died after traveling to Izmir, Turkey, to undergo a Brazilian butt lift, according to reports.
Cambridge, who had three children and worked as an esthetician in Leeds, England, traveled to Elite Aftercare, a center that has treated British reality TV stars such as Amber Turner and Kayleigh Morris. The exact cause of her death is undetermined. Cambridge's partner, Scott Franks, wrote on Facebook that she fell unconscious "really early on" in the procedure and did not wake up.
The butt lift, which costs about $6,500 at Elite Aftercare, is a controversial surgery. It involves transferring fat from other parts of the body to one's rear and has been responsible for the deaths of 11 women in Florida. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), gluteal fat grafting has a higher death rate than any other cosmetic procedure.
According to Matthew Elias, a Florida dermatologist, "The major risk with BBLs is fat embolism, or when fat globules are released into the bloodstream. This can cause heart attacks, stroke, and in this case, death."
That ASPS task force suggested that butt lifts are dangerous because increased demand of the operation has led to more non-board-certified plastic surgeons performing it. If you're interested in any cosmetic surgery, it's highly recommended that you undergo the procedure under the supervision of a doctor - not a medispa.

New Research Suggests a High-Fat Diet Actually Makes It Harder to Feel Full
One of the benefits of eating a high-fat, low-carb diet - besides the weight loss - is that fat is a satiating macronutrient. Loading up on healthy monounsaturated fats such as avocados, nuts, and olive oil keeps you feeling satisfied until your next meal. But a new study suggests that eating high-fat foods actually blocks the brain from letting it know it's time to stop eating.
The research, published in Science Translational Medicine, found that mice that were fed a high-fat diet produce a hormone called MMP-2 that clips receptors for the hormone leptin in the brain, according to the EurekAlert release. Often referred to as the satiety hormone, leptin's job is to inform the brain that you have enough fat stored and are sated. Since MMP-2 blocks leptin from binding to its receptors, your brain doesn't get the signal that your stomach is full and you should stop eating. Researchers believe this mechanism explains a condition called leptin resistance, which is common among obese patients but isn't well understood. They also found when MMP-2 is blocked, the leptin can still signal when the stomach is full.
It's important to note that this study was conducted in mice, not humans. The type of fat the mice were fed also wasn't specified in the press release, whether it was healthy fats including monounsaturated fats or unhealthier ones such as saturated or trans fats. While scientists are continuing to study the phenomenon of leptin resistance, they are hoping for a clinical trial to test if MMP-2 blockers could actually help people lose weight.
In the meantime, check with your doctor or registered dietitian before making any major dietary changes. High-fat diets, such as the keto diet, should be done under medical supervision.
To Menstrual Cup or Not to Menstrual Cup? These Experts Have Answers
Selecting the right feminine hygiene product for your cycle is an intensely personal choice. Some women are most comfortable in maxi pads, while others swear by period-proof underwear. But for long wear and convenience, two feminine hygiene products typically duke it out: tampons and menstrual cups. So what's the real difference between these two methods? Is one safer or "better" than the other?
Amandine Pranlas-Descours, global brand director for menstrual cup manufacturer Intimina, said that it depends on the material. "Cups [that] are made of medical-grade silicone have a lot of health benefits, compared to tampons," she said. "Medical-grade silicone is a supersafe material - ours is actually the same material they use in surgical implants and pacemakers. The material is inert, so it doesn't affect the natural pH balance of the body. It's hypoallergenic, latex-free, phthalate-free, and contains zero toxins."
Dr. Shari Lawson, M.D., assistant professor of gynecology and obstetrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, added that there can be both health and environmental benefits to using menstrual cups. "Some women are really concerned about some of the chemicals and bleach that are used in tampons," she noted. "Additionally, the reusable versions of the cup are fairly environmentally friendly because you just rinse and reuse - no tampons to flush into the sewer system or plastic packed pads to fill the landfill."
There are also additional health benefits, explained Pranlas-Descours. Menstrual cups, she said, don't absorb any moisture - they just hold the menstrual fluid until removed, so they don't dry out the tissue or cause irritation. Tampon fibers, on the other hand, absorb all fluid - including much-needed discharge that keeps our vaginas healthy and comfortable.
Lawson said that while some people may be hesitant about using a menstrual cup, there is really no reason to feel any differently about a menstrual cup vs. a tampon. "The menstrual cups come in two sizes, and if you can insert a tampon, you can probably use one," she said. "Like a tampon, you shouldn't feel it if it's in the right place. There isn't really a way to injure yourself using a menstrual cup - just be sure to wash your hands and keep your nails short."
Dr. Betty Chou, M.D., assistant professor of gynecology and obstetrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, said that while she has some patients who prefer to use a menstrual cup, you should still be aware of how long you have been wearing one. "Like tampons, they have the same very small risk of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) but are generally considered safe to use," she said. "I've never had a patient who has had an injury from using a menstrual cup," she said.
Like all things concerning your period, which feminine hygiene method you choose is completely up to your personal preference and lifestyle, and both tampons and menstrual cups are considered perfectly safe to use. Do your homework, experiment, and don't be afraid to switch it up until you find the method that works for you.
Stress Was Destroying My Health - Here's How I Stopped It
Checking into the emergency room, alone in my pajamas with tears streaming down my face . . . that should have been my low point. My wake-up call. I'm in my late 20s, but I felt that childlike, paralytic helplessness that morning, like I needed my mom.
This wasn't the first health scare I'd experienced in the past year, and it definitely wasn't the last; I had been in and out of doctor's offices and urgent cares with a slew of inexplicable physical ailments for several months. Despite being a fitness and health editor and "doing all the right things," according to many a health practitioner, I was deteriorating. Drastically. To make matters worse, my mental health was tanking and in a seriously dangerous place.
Why would someone who does all the right things be in such poor physical health?
Unfortunately, that hospital visit wasn't enough to get me to stop everything and reevaluate. I didn't hit the proverbial "panic button" until I started having dissociative panic attacks months later. Not to be too lighthearted, but at that point, finally, Gretchen Weiners had cracked.
Why would someone who exercises five to seven days a week, eats healthy foods, goes to acupuncture and physical therapy, uses essential oils and meditates, and - as mentioned - does all the right things be in such poor physical health? Perhaps you find yourself nodding along, and if you're anything like me, the culprit may be simpler than you'd think: stress.
I know, I know - everyone has stress! But that isn't a reason to ignore it and let it build up. If you do that for too long, it can sabotage your body and brain. I joke a lot about my situation, and hyperbolic humor is among my favorite coping mechanisms, but I mean it when I say that stress was killing me. It manifested in chronic illness, mysterious pains and ailments, severe depression and anxiety, and panic disorder.
Fast forward four months to today, and I couldn't be further from that place. I feel like I was reborn; I wake up feeling excited, feeling joy, and feeling hope for the first time in a long time. My ailments are all but gone. I show no markers in my blood of the chronic illness I once battled. The debilitating depression and anxiety have disappeared, and I haven't had a single panic attack in months. So how did I get here? I like to think of it as a three-pronged process, with the first being the most important. I could write a book describing it in its entirety, but here's the gist.
Back to Basics: This Fundamental Workout Will Help You Strengthen at Any Level
Introducing strength training into your workouts can definitely seem like an intimidating move, but there are plenty of ways to ease into this new part of your fitness journey. For one, you don't have to jump straight into barbell work. Strength training encompasses bodyweight exercises that can also be enhanced with dumbbells. To help you narrow down your routine to the best beginner moves, Corey Phelps, nutrition expert, NASM personal trainer, certified BASI Pilates teacher, TRX and Spinning instructor, and creator of the fitness app Cultivate365, shared a strengthening workout that can help any level master fundamental movements.
Corey's biggest recommendation: "Keep it simple, start small, and build from there," she told POPSUGAR. "If you do too much in the beginning, you may end up overly sore, which can be discouraging and ultimately hinder you from keeping a consistent schedule."
Her workout below targets major muscle groups and serves as a helpful way to measure your progress. Once you're able to complete 15 reps with ease, it's time to move onto heavier weights.
The workout:
- Squats
- Walking lunges
- Shoulder presses
- Bicep curls
- Overhead triceps extensions
- Reverse abdominal crunches
Complete 10 to 12 reps for each move for a total of four sets. Not challenging enough? Increase your reps to 12 to 15 for a total of five sets.
See the moves ahead!
I Haven't Eaten Dairy For 4 Years, and I've Experienced These 12 Massive Health Benefits
As a young animal lover, I stopped eating meat when I was 13 years old, and dairy was an absolute staple. I didn't think anything was wrong with it because it wasn't like the cows were being killed, right? Wrong. So wrong. It wasn't until four years ago, when I watched the documentary Vegucated, that I found out how inhumane the dairy industry is. I had no idea! Cows are artificially impregnated at an alarming rate, and after they gave birth, their babies are brutally taken away from them immediately and hooked up to a machine to give their milk to us. I was sobbing watching a farmer drag a newborn calf away from its mama while she screamed and tried to chase after it as they held her back.
I live in Vermont, where the joke is that there are more cows than people. I spoke to tons of small family farms to find out the truth. They all nodded. I was shocked that one very well-known organic farm explained, "The reason we separate the calf right away is so they don't bond. Already you can hear the moms and calves mooing to each other, and it'd be much worse if they stayed together." It made me sick. As a mother of two, my heart ached, and I felt compelled to give dairy up overnight.
Aside from feeling good about not supporting the cruel dairy industry, I had no idea how dramatically my life would improve over the past four years. Here are the amazing health benefits I experienced after going dairy-free.

Try Not to Cry When You Hear How Venus and Serena Feel About Playing Each Other
It's time to get caught up on all the 2018 US Open action. First, Simona Halep, the number one seed, lost in the very first round. The French Open banned Serena Williams's catsuit; she later rocked an Off-White x Nike ensemble fit for the queen she is in black and purple. And, on top of all of that, Alizé Cornet received a court violation for unsportsmanlike conduct because she adjusted her shirt.
As if the US Open couldn't get any more exciting, last night Serena defeated Carina Witthöft in the second round, advancing to the third round, where she'll face off with her big sister Venus sooner than expected in the tournament. Ahead of one of the most anticipated meetups, Venus spoke to POPSUGAR about how she prepares for tournaments and what it has been like competing against her sister for the past 20 years. "We're sisters through the whole match," she said. "That never stops."
During last night's press conference, Serena echoed those sentiments. "We make each other better; we bring out the best when we play each other. It's what we do," she said.
When asked what the toughest part emotionally is playing Venus, she replied, "I never root against her no matter what . . . when you always want someone to win, to have to beat them . . . that's the hardest part."
Venus and Serena will compete tomorrow in Flushing Meadow, NY. The time is TBD.

Trying to Tone That Tummy? You'll Want to Nix These Carbs From Your Diet
Carbs: one of the most debatable food categories. There are tons of diets out there promoting an elimination or severe reduction of carbohydrates in our meals to help us lose weight. But are carbs good or bad for us? Can we eat them and still lose weight? Are they healthy? Do they contribute to belly fat?
There's a simple answer to all of these questions: not all carbs are created equal. Our bodies need carbohydrates and utilize them as a fuel source. However, while some carbs can help us reach our health goals, others should be avoided because they tend to be processed to the point where they serve little to no nutritional purpose in our diets and add unnecessary weight to our midsections. Most "bad" carbs are void of fiber, which isn't great for our weight-loss goals. Fiber helps us stay fuller longer, can reduce gut inflammation, and increases metabolism. As a certified holistic nutritionist, rather than telling my clients to eliminate carbs, I educate them on the ones that should be taken out of their diets to help them reach their health goals. There are five types of carbs I always recommend avoiding, especially for those who are trying to lose belly fat.

Should I Eat 3 Square Meals a Day For Weight Loss? These Dietitians Weigh In
It sounds like your mom's golden advice: you should eat three meals a day to be healthy. Proponents of eating three meals a day claim it can regulate blood sugar and is better for overall health. But others claim eating five smaller meals, or three moderate meals and two small snacks, a day is actually more beneficial for appetite control and weight loss. So which one is it? We tapped some dietitians to find out.
An Exclusive Workout to Accentuate Curves and Sculpt Muscle, Straight From Rihanna's Trainer
Rihanna has been my crush since she released her debut album, Music of the Sun, in 2005. So, naturally, when I got the opportunity to do a one-on-one session with her trainer Dede Lagree at Form50 in New York, I felt that much closer to being best friends with the Bad Gal herself.
The Lagree Fitness Method is loved by celebrities like Meghan Markle, Ashley Graham, and Viola Davis. As someone who always works out - my favorite training modalities are weightlifting and sprinting - I can vouch that the Lagree Method is no joke. The infamous slow tempo of a megaformer class certainly challenges your balance and stability, causing your muscles to quiver hours after your workout is over.
In a recent interview for the British Vogue September issue, Rihanna said that she's ready to start working out again, with one caveat: she doesn't want to lose her butt, hips, and thighs. This at-home Lagree workout, using sliders to mimic the motion of the megaformer, will do the exact opposite, as it's all about strengthening the legs, booty, and abs to accentuate your curves.
The Workout
Do one set of each exercise listed below, taking little rest as you transition between exercises. Take 90 seconds to two minutes of rest in between each round, completing a total of four rounds.
- Plank to pike: 12 reps
- Bear: 12 reps
- Elevator lunges: 12 reps each leg
- Side lunge: 12 reps
If you want a taste of what it's like to train like Rihanna, grab a towel or a pair of sliders, and get ready to build that cake, cake, cake, cake!

You Will Love This Guide on How Tennis Scoring Works
If you've tuned in to US Open to catch the action but are feeling a little confused by what's happening on the court, don't fret. Tennis scoring can seem complicated at first, but once you get the hang of it, you'll feel like a seasoned fan. Here's a primer on scoring as the tournament heads toward the finals - so you can keep up with the matches!
The Framework
- Each tennis match is made up of two to three sets. To win a set, you must win at least six games.
- The games are scored starting at "love" (or zero) and go up to 40, but that's actually just four points. From love, the first point is 15, then 30, then 40, then game point, which wins the game.
Starting the Game
- To determine who serves first, you flip a coin or (more likely) spin a racket. Whoever wins the toss gets to decide one of four things: that she wants to serve first, that she wants to receive first, which side of the court she wants to start on (in which case, the opponent chooses who serves first), or that she wants to leave the choices up to her opponent.
- Whoever starts serving continues to serve until that game is over. Then the serve moves to the other player.
- You serve from behind the baseline, starting on the right-hand side of the court, anywhere between the singles sideline and the center mark on the court.
Scoring the Game
- Before serving, you should announce the score, with your score first, then your opponent's. So if you have zero and your opponent has 30, say "love-30."
- Every time you serve, you get two tries. The serve must go over the net, land in the service box opposite you, and bounce once before your opponent returns it.
- If it doesn't land in the service box, you take a second serve. If the second serve also misses, then you lose the point.
- If your serve grazes the net but still lands in the service box, the serve doesn't count, and you must take that serve over. This is called a "let."
- If your serve goes in and the opponent returns it, you continue hitting back and forth until someone hits the ball into the net, hits it out of bounds, or misses a shot. If that person is you, then your opponent gets a point. If it's your opponent who hits it into the net/hits it out of bounds/misses a shot, then you get the point.
- Whoever is serving continues serving until the score reaches 40, calling out the score before every serve.
- If the score is tied at 40 ("40-all"), that is "deuce," which is essentially another word for tie. To break the tie, someone must win two points in a row. If you are serving at deuce and you win the next point, then you say "my ad," which means "my advantage." If your opponent wins, it goes back to deuce, and someone again must win by two points in a row. Yes, this could go on forever.
- Once the game is over, the other person serves. After odd-numbered games (so after game one, game three, game five) you switch sides on the court.
Scoring a Set
- Before the first serve in each new game, whoever is serving announces the score in sets. Say your score first, then your opponent's. So if you won the first set, you would say "1-0."
- To complete a set, someone must win six games; the first person to win six games wins the set.
- However, as with "deuce," you must win a set by at least two games. So, if the score is 6-5, the person with 5 must win by two games. If the score ties at 6-6, you play a tiebreaker.
Scoring the Match
- The whole shebang is called a match. The match is determined by the best two out of three sets. So if you win two sets, you win. If you each win a set, then you play a third set to determine the winner.

Victoria Beckham Just Blindsided Us With This Sexy Dress, So Forgive Us If We Forgot David Was There
Ahead of Labor Day weekend, we were treated to a special red-carpet appearance from Victoria and David Beckham. The two stepped out together to attend the UEFA Champions League draw in Monaco on Thursday, where David was presented with the UEFA Presidents Award. The event may have been all about celebrating David, but the red carpet is all about Victoria.
The designer looked stunning in a minimal black cocktail dress that wowed with plunging neckline. It might be understated, but that's the kind of look Mrs. Beckham does so well. There's a New Age Limit For Rear-Facing Car Seats, and It's Older Than You Think
The American Academy of Pediatrics recently announced new guidelines for age limits regarding rear-facing car seats. Although the group previously recommended that kids sit rear-facing until age 2, now the AAP is directing parents to keep their children rear-facing until they reach the seat's maximum height and weight limit, regardless of age. So what does that mean for moms and dads? Most little ones will stick with the rear-facing position until they're about 4 years old.
Natasha Young, a certified technician for the nonprofit organization Safe Kids Worldwide, told CBS that keeping kids in this position for a longer period of time is ultimately safer. "It's really important to keep them rear-facing as long as possible," she said. "Even if their children's legs are longer than the car seat, they can easily fold their legs up into the car seat and it's actually much safer for their legs."
Hopefully, the new recommendations will ensure that kids' heads and necks are protected, as many parents make the mistake of letting their kids face forward too early. "A lot of times they like to see their child, entertain their child, especially if their child might be a little more fussy," said Natasha.
The new guidelines also suggest that once kids finally face forward, they should still be required to sit in a car seat until they outgrow the seat's maximum height and weight capacity (usually around 60 pounds). Once they exceed the car seat's limits, parents should have them ride in a booster seat until they're big enough to use a normal seat belt correctly.
The AAP also took the time to remind parents that kids under the age of 13 should always sit in the back seat of a vehicle.
Can You Prevent Head Lice? 4 Things You Can Do to Keep Nits Away From Your Child
Because I got lice as a child and know what a painstaking removal process it can be, I'm terrified of my son bringing home some nits. Doing things like spending hours combing through my tender hair and having to meticulously clean everything in the house are burned into my brain, just like the smell of the product used to kill the bugs is burned into my nose. It may be a common part of childhood, but I want to do anything I can to prevent my son from having to deal with dreaded head lice. While it will require some serious work, there are things you can do to prevent your child from getting lice.
Teach Them About Space
The first line of defense might be some good, old-fashioned boundary lessons. "Lice spread through head-to-head contact, so without physical boundaries, lice can easily crawl from one child to another," Jackie O'Connell, owner and operator of Disentangle Lice Removal, explained to POPSUGAR. "Hugging, wrestling, and watching tablets together are just a few of the ways it can spread from one child to another." The main thing kids should avoid is directly touching heads with another individual. "Although many people believe that lice transmit through helmets, hats, sharing lockers, etc., this has been debunked in recent years," she said. "Research shows that almost every case is contracted through direct head contact." However, abstaining from those actions entirely is unlikely, and there are products that can help.
Use Preventative Products
"There are a multitude of products available to prevent contracting lice," O'Connell explained. "At Disentangle, we carry shampoos, conditioners, detangling sprays, gels, and mousses that prevent transmission. Most lice prevention products contain a scent that lice find offensive. These scents can range from rosemary, peppermint, citronella, and tea tree oil." And while these kind of products are helpful, they're not perfect. "Although we highly recommend using a preventative product on your child, we also warn that these products are not 100 percent guaranteed. They're extremely effective at masking the natural scent of the scalp, but a bug will transfer to any environment if their survival is threatened."
Consider How They Wear Their Hair
Additionally, a different hairstyle might make a world of difference to whether or not a child contracts lice. "We recommend tying your child's hair up whenever they're at school or in a social setting," O'Connell advised. "Ponytails are great, but braids or buns are even better. Loose or swinging hair offers lice the opportunity to crawl from one person to another, so tying the hair up is the most effective way to avoid transmission."
Education Is Key
"At Disentangle, our top priority is educating our clients about lice while receiving treatment," O'Connell continued. "With all the myths and misconceptions out there, obtaining factual information can be difficult. We recommend that parents educate themselves so they can pass on proper information to their children. It's extremely rare that someone would contract lice from an inanimate object, so simply explain to your kids how important it is to avoid any head-to-head contact. Lastly, we encourage the use of preventative products anytime they interact with other children."
15 Facts About Lice Every Parent Should Know
It's back-to-school time, and while you're busy taking adorable first-day photos and celebrating the return of your free time (see you in seven hours, kiddos!), there's another, less exciting part of sending your kids back to school: the knowledge that along with new friends, homework, and endless crafts, they're super likely to come home with bugs . . . sometimes literally in the form of dreaded lice.
Lice are extremely common and nothing to be embarrassed about (hey, even Jennifer Garner got them!), but that doesn't mean they're not hugely annoying and generally icky. As you send your students back to class, praying they don't ever come home with a letter from the teacher warning of a lice outbreak, here are 15 things to know about head lice in general, including how to avoid them and what to do if they invade your kid's head.
- Lice are nothing to be embarrassed about! Millions of school-age children in the United States get head lice every year, and the bugs infect a cross section of the population. Getting lice doesn't mean you weren't clean or vigilant enough. Simply put, lice happen!
- Head lice live for about 28 days. They develop in three phases: egg (also called a nit), nymph, and louse. Nits hatch in six to nine days and are usually found within a few millimeters of the scalp (they don't survive if they're farther away). Nymphs look like adult head lice but are much smaller (about the size of a pinhead) and become adults about seven days later. An adult louse, which is about the size of a sesame seed, can multiply fast and lay up to 10 eggs a day. It takes about 12 to 14 days for a nit to reach adulthood.
- Lice are not airborne. They cannot jump, hop, or fly. The main way head lice spread is from close, prolonged head-to-head contact and, less commonly, through brushes, hats, helmets, or hair accessories.
- Lice are visible to the naked eye. As long as you have decent vision, you should be able to see the tiny bugs or nits in a child's hair, though it might take some concentration and searching to find them.
- Nits are distinguishable from dandruff. Nits look like small white or yellow-brown specks and are firmly attached to the hair near the scalp. They will not brush away like dandruff.
- Nits have favorite spots on the head. The easiest place to find them is at the hairline at the back of the neck or behind the ears.
- Your child's haircut doesn't matter. Buzzing your child's hair doesn't protect them from lice; they can lay nits on a quarter-inch of hair.
- There's a reason it's called head lice. Head lice do not travel to other parts of the body.
- Your dog isn't the problem. Head lice are spread from person to person, not from an animal to a person or vice versa.
- Dirty hair isn't the culprit. Surprisingly, head lice like a clean head the best.
- They need a head to survive. Lice have very short lifespans and must feed frequently to stay alive. Typically, they only live about two days when they're off the head, which means you don't have to worry about bedding, upholstery, or clothing items your lice-infected child hasn't touched since last week.
- Just because one child has lice doesn't mean the rest of the family will get it, too. Unless you've had head-to-head contact with a child who has been infected with lice or have shared head coverings or hair accessories, you're probably clear.
- Not all schools require you to keep a lice-infected student home. The American Academy of Pediatrics and National Association of School Nurses have discouraged "no-nit" policies, stating that students who still have nits in their hair can't return to school. Check with your school to see what its policy states.
- You don't need to go overboard to remove lice from your home. Every day, wash the clothing, bedding, brushes, and hair accessories your child has used during their lice infestation. Put stuffed animals in the dryer to kill active lice, or simply put them in a bag for a few days, after which any lice will be dead. You don't need to replace furniture or mattresses or wash your child's whole wardrobe. Remember, lice don't live long off heads.
- There are multiple ways to remove lice. Drugstore remedies may work for most people, but there are also natural remedies and many professional services that will do the stressful work of removing nits for around $200-$300, which many parents feel is a small price to pay for the peace of mind that the lice have been vanquished.
