So, Is It Really OK to Cry in Front of Your Kids? We Asked an Expert

Whether you are a total sucker for cheesy romantic comedies or have just experienced personal loss, deciding if you should let your kids see you cry can be a tricky decision. On one hand, it's healthy to share emotions with your kids, but how young is too young to clue your children into the fact that the family is going to experience a heavy loss and their grandfather will likely lose his battle with cancer? While these questions can be tough, they're important to answer.

Thankfully, we did the heavy lifting for you by asking Mary Fristad, PhD, a psychiatry and psychology professor with the department of psychiatry and behavioral health at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, to weigh in. And good news: it's actually not so bad for your kids to see you cry, after all. Scroll through to see the pros, cons, and ways to talk to your kids based on their age if they see you begin to tear up.

A Total Stranger Mom-Shamed Me For Not Breastfeeding, and It Hurt Like Hell

Many years have passed since this incident, but a total stranger's horrible comment about my decision not to breastfeed my daughter still haunts me. I never even saw this person face to face, since she mom-shamed me online. Still, her harsh words ring in my ears to this day.

It all started because I'd written a blog post about why I chose to formula feed and how well it was going following an emotional, but ultimately failed, experience with breastfeeding. I felt good sharing my story and hoped it would help other moms who were also struggling to breastfeed embrace formula feeding without feeling guilty or ashamed. I shouldn't have read the comments; I knew I shouldn't have read the comments. But I did, and there they were - words that cut me so deep, it was as if I'd just been stabbed in the heart: YOU DON'T DESERVE TO BE A MOTHER.

There they were - words that cut me so deep, it was as if I'd just been stabbed in the heart: YOU DON'T DESERVE TO BE A MOTHER.

There was more. Some stuff about how selfish I was for not breastfeeding, and how my kids would grow up to hate me. You know, your typical internet troll rant that I should have ignored or laughed off. But for some reason, I couldn't. Maybe it was because this stranger had laid bare my deepest fears, namely that because I'd failed to make breastfeeding work, I was somehow less of a good mother for my child. Or that, just as she'd hinted, I could never stack up against other moms who breastfed, and their kids were better off.

Against my better judgment, I wrote back to let this person know how badly her comment hurt me. Then I chastised myself even more for letting her know she'd "won" by getting a reaction out of me. Luckily, I was able to wrangle up enough self-control to close my laptop and never look to see whether she'd responded with more garbage. But I'd be lying if I claimed that was the end of it. In tears, I went to my husband and recounted the vile things this mom-shamer had said to me. Of course, he said exactly what I needed to hear: That this person didn't know me. She had no idea what kind of mom I was. And it was easy for her to say horrible stuff about me from the safety of her computer, wherever the hell she lived.

I knew all of this was true. But it took me days, maybe weeks, to get her comment out of my mind. YOU DON'T DESERVE TO BE A MOTHER. YOU DON'T DESERVE TO BE A MOTHER. Years later, I still remember how badly her words hurt. And any time I'm feeling insecure or down on myself about my parenting choices, I hear those words in my head: YOU DON'T DESERVE TO BE A MOTHER.

I can't change what was said or how negatively it affected me, but here's the positive I take away: mom-shaming has a real impact. No matter how casually someone makes a remark, it can stay with a mother forever. And while I'm much more content with my parenting choices now and try not to let that noise affect me, I'll never forget it. And in turn, I watch what I say to other moms, both in person and online. You never know how low she's feeling or how much saying something supportive instead could change her life for the better.

Prince Harry's Incredibly Sweet Pinky Promise With a Sick Little Girl Will Touch Your Heart

It's no secret that Prince Harry adores kids, but his latest interaction with a little girl has us in a puddle of tears. On Tuesday, the royal attended London's WellChild Awards with Meghan Markle, where the pair met with children who were honored for their bravery and courage. One of those kids was 7-year-old Matilda Booth, who has spina bifida and is paralyzed from the chest down. During their meeting, Harry and Matilda shared an incredibly sweet moment when Harry told her to "never stop smiling." "He made her pinky promise to always keep that beautiful smile," Matila's mom, Sharon Booth, told People. "[Harry and Meghan] made us feel so much at ease. They were both so nice."

And things only got cuter from there! Matilda presented Meghan with a bouquet of flowers, and in return, Meghan plucked one of the roses from the bouquet and gave it to Matilda to keep. "She just seems so gentle and sincere," Sharon added. "They were just like normal people." Yep, Harry and Meghan are going to make great parents one day.

Lana Condor Shares a Surprising Perk of Getting a Bob Haircut

Since Netflix's To All the Boys I've Loved Before debuted on Aug. 17, audiences have fallen fast for the lead, Lana Condor, who plays shy teen Lara Jean. The beauty recently chopped her long black hair into a chic bob and revealed the change on Instagram stories. The star's fans couldn't wait to get a better look at her new cut, and luckily just a few days later, Condor shared an up-close shot.

In addition to the obvious cuteness of the cut, the actress shared an unexpected perk of her new hairstyle in the caption: "They chopped off all my hair, and subsequently also saved me so much money now on shampoo and conditioner." (Honestly, true.)

A Love Letter to School Uniforms

Dear School Uniforms,

Many schools across America are switching to you for their students. The kids may hate you, but as a parent who's children attend a school that enforces uniforms, I sure as hell love you.

Thank you, school uniforms, for decreasing the amount of laundry I have to do by an unfathomable amount every week. Instead of the normal five loads of different colored clothes I'd have to wash, I now only have two. Less loads of laundry equals less electricity, which also equals more money in mama's pocket and more sanity in my always-stressed brain. Thank you for also arriving stiff as hell, so that I don't have to iron your pants and jumpers at the beginning of the school year. You really know how to make a girl feel seen.

Thank you for making mornings with my children go smoother. Instead of me being the bad guy and crushing my first grader's fashion desire to wear red polka dot shorts with an orange striped shirt to school, she has no choice but to wear you. And instead of arguing with my tween about wearing short shorts, you're there for her every single day. Oh, how many fights you've helped me avoid.

Last but certainly not least, thank you, school uniforms, for teaching our youth that fashion, popular brands, and expensive clothing aren't everything. Instead of worrying about whether their shirt is "cool" enough or their pants look "hipster" enough to fit in with their peers, our children are able to focus on more important things in school, like learning and making friends.

So, thank you, school uniforms. I am so glad for the plaid.

Love Always,
A Grateful Mom

8 Minutes Is All You Need For Poached Chicken in an Instant Pot

There's so much to love about the Instant Pot, including this technique for poaching chicken in less than 10 minutes. Poaching chicken over the stovetop usually takes around 20-30 minutes, so this is a significant time slasher.

Here's the method:

  1. Fill the Instant Pot a little less than 2/3 full with boneless, skinless chicken. Cover with chicken broth. Add a few cloves of garlic, a few bay leaves, or a sprig of thyme (optional). Do not allow the liquid to exceed the 2/3-full mark. Close the lid as the manual instructs, making sure the pressure release handle is secured in the sealed position.
  2. Press the [Manual] button and use the [+] or [-] buttons to choose 8 minutes of cook time. Once the Instant Pot has finished the cook time, unplug it. Use the "Quick Release" method of opening the cooker by carefully turning the pressure release handle to the "venting" position to let out steam until the float valve drops down. Carefully open the lid.
  3. Remove chicken breasts and place on a cutting board. Shred using two forks or in a stand-up mixer with the paddle attachment.
  4. Return the chicken to the broth and use as a soup base or keep chicken and broth separated, reserving them for other uses.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Dog Has a Name, and It's Fit For a King

We recently found out that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle adopted a Labrador Retriever last month, and now we finally know his name! According to People, the couple's new furry addition is named Oz. It's unclear what the inspiration behind his name was, but People notes that a famous poem by Percy Shelley titled "Ozymandias" is about an Egyptian ruler who calls himself the "king of kings." It could also be a nod to Harry's upcoming Invictus Games, which will be taking place in Sydney, Australia, in October. Oz has reportedly joined Meghan and Harry at their country home in Cotswolds and at Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace.

Meghan and Harry are both dog-lovers. The royal has shared several adorable moments with dogs over the years; in fact, Harry even broke protocol once when he cuddled with one at the 2015 Royal Variety Performance. Meghan, on the other hand, previously had two rescue dogs, Guy and Bogart, but had to leave behind Bogart when she moved to London because he was reportedly too old to fly. Hopefully Oz makes his first royal appearance soon!

We Stopped Using Credit Cards, and It's Not as Easy as You'd Think

In the United States, it is reported that the average family has over $8,000 in credit card debt. That's over $1 trillion, and that number is steadily climbing. Credit cards have become a way of life for many people; some rely on them for emergencies and various unexpected expenses, while others use them to buy things that they just can't afford. Still others default to credit cards in hopes of racking up sky miles or other enticing rewards.

That's the trap into which we fell.

My husband and I each have a credit card through a bank with a generous rewards program. The points pile up quickly, and the amount of points needed for various rewards is reasonable. So we figured we might as well use the cards, especially for large purchases, and pay them off in full each month. And that worked. For a while. The problem was, we would lose track of just how much we charged each month. And instead of the $500 bill we were expecting, there would be an $800 bill. Eventually, all of the money we hadn't expected to spend - all of the money we couldn't see - had added up into the thousands. So whatever rewards the credit card company was giving us, it was making back (and then some) in interest.

It became obvious that this method wasn't working for us, as we were clearly the losers here. We decided to pay them off and stop using them altogether. It wasn't easy, but we haven't looked back since. Here are five things I learned along the way that may help if you're also considering breaking up with your plastic.

This Canadian Wedding Is Equal Parts Understated Elegance and Outrageous Fun

Don't let the sparkling lake and lush orchard setting fool you - Annie and John's wedding may look like a stunningly simple outdoor big day, but the details perfectly capture the quirky-fun nature of the Mr. and Mrs. After all, we're talking about a couple who for Valentine's Day dressed up in formalwear (fascinator and top hat included) and went on a progressive dinner to all the hot fast-food joints in town. John even included a photoshopped still from The Bachelor in his proposal. So, naturally, their wedding would include full-size cardboard cutouts of themselves in extravagant '80s weddingwear, a ginormous candy bar complete with their most embarrassing childhood photos blown up on sticks, and a postceremony, prereception pit stop at A&W.

Besides the fun factor, the wedding was really a family (and friends) affair. Not only did the ceremony take place at a family member's private residence in Kelowna, British Columbia, but Annie's mom, Cecelia, and aunt, Julie, did a lot of the planning, with Annie's dad coming in at crunch time with the week-of to-do lists. Loved ones all came together in every way they could to make the day what it was, and it was clear that Annie and John's supportive community was a focus for them in their day. In fact, I love what they used as their guiding "theme" (inspired by The Broke-Ass Bride's Wedding Guide by Dana LaRue):

  • Treat our guests as community and not an audience.
  • Let our wedding tell our story (past, present, future).
  • Create an atmosphere - so people remember they had fun.
  • Fun is free.
  • We want lots of laughter.
  • Short speeches - more social.
  • "Go big or go home" - decide what we can do well (within our budget).

So how did they pull it off? To start, they kept the speeches to a minimum by including as much information as they could in their program. The personalized, 12-page, photo-filled program included the order of ceremony, who was in the wedding party, fun facts about the couple, a list of out-of-town guests, a long list of thank yous, and special thank-you letters to their parents. To keep their sanity on the day of, Annie and John had their own private dinner at A&W, which they called their "best decision ever." They had 20 minutes to themselves (which on most people's wedding day is unheard of), where they could fuel up before spending the entire time at the reception mingling and socializing with their guests instead of stuck at a table. They were able to stick to their budget by enlisting the help of friends and family and by focusing on their top priorities: the candy buffet and the photos. Their main "decor" were the printed fatheads, posters, signs, and cardboard cutouts at the reception, which could all be used as props in the photo booth. Double duty!

Suspiria Hasn't Even Been Released Yet, but the Chances of a Sequel Are Very High

Excitement is already ramping up in earnest for one of the Fall's most unsettling movies, Suspiria. The remake of the iconic 1977 film already has a lot going for it: so far, we've borne witness to an unsettling mélange of photos, more than one creepy trailer, and even a vague promise of a postcredits scene. But among all the gripping details pertaining to the new spine-chiller, one is particularly exciting: this may only be the first of three installments.

In a recent interview with Deadline, director Luca Guadagnino explained that he already had planned on making a sequel. In fact, the original title of the remake would've hinted at exactly that. Originally, Guadagnino was planning on using Suspiria: Part One as the name. After all, the original was part of a series as well. The former project was called "The Three Mothers" trilogy, which also includes 1980's Inferno and 2007's The Mother of Tears. Ultimately, the director lopped off the "Part One" for a pretty understandable reason. "We didn't want to give the impression of something that couldn't stand alone," he said.

All things considered, it sounds like the trilogy has been the plan all along. The fact that the remake was nearly called Suspiria: Part One means that Guadagnino not only envisioned his updated take as a series, but perhaps even discussed it with Amazon. But don't take it from us! "Truthfully, I'd be interested to explore the origin of Madame Blanc and Helena Markos and also the future of Suzy Bannion in the world. So maybe," Guadagnino told Deadline. "We'll have to see how the movie goes." Suspiria hits theaters Oct. 26.

Meghan Markle's Power Suit Is All Kinds of Sexy and Sophisticated

Meghan Markle pushed pause on Suits when she joined the Royal family, but she's back to her regularly scheduled programming as far as fashion is concerned, turning heads on Tuesday in an Altuzarra blazer. Following her appearance at last week's Hamilton fundraiser, Meghan joined Prince Harry for the WellChild Awards in a look that's right up her alley.

She skipped the dress, opting instead for slim trousers and a Deitas silk tank to complement her chic suiting. True to form, she kept her hair in a low, nonchalant bun, and added a Stella McCartney clutch and black pumps to finish things off. Suffice it to say, Meghan just aced another royal outing in a style that feels entirely her own.

This $23 Cardigan Is Going Viral on Amazon

When something is getting traction on Amazon, you need to pay attention. That's why our jaws dropped when we saw that this Nenona V-Neck Button-Down Cardigan Sweater ($23) is up 2,661 percent in sales.

Customers are giving the cardigan overwhelmingly positive reviews. The cute snap buttons and thick material make it an excellent purchase. Plus, it comes in 16 different colors: black, red, blue, green, gray, brown, and purple.

"It's not often that I find clothes on Amazon that I love, but I love this cardigan!" one customer wrote. "I wear it with flats, I wear it with my brown tall boots, I even wear it with my work slacks. It is a nice quality, not super thin like I've gotten before, and nice thicker banding on the arms and bottom."

This sweater is the perfect Fall piece; it's incredibly versatile and will keep you cozy. We suggest buying it while you can - with so much popularity it's bound to sell out in the blink of an eye.

Hello, Fall! Meet the Highest-Rated Leather Jacket at Nordstrom

I love leather jackets. They're so versatile; you can wear them seamlessly with jeans and a t-shirt or a flirty dress, they keep you warm, and they always look good. Always. This season, I'm in the market for a new jacket, and I'm kind of obsessed with this AllSaints Balfern Leather Biker Jacket ($498). The brand is known for its supersoft, comfortable leather. Plus, I can't get enough of the zippered sleeves or faux belt detail.

I think it's the perfect mix of tough and fashionable, and evidently, other customers agree, as it's the top-rated leather jacket at Nordstrom. One of the many rave reviewers says, "I have had it for 2 years and it still looks amazing, will last me for years! It's super soft and all around perfect. Worth the splurge!" And if you need one more push, a fellow editor, Stephanie Nguyen, let me know she also has this jacket and absolutely loves it. With this many glowing recommendations, I can't think of a reason not to pick it up.

No matter the weather or occasion, a leather jacket is always appropriate. This silhouette is a classic; treat it right and you'll have it for a long time, just as these reviews say. Your closet will thank you. Just be prepared to have everyone stop you to ask where you got your perfect leather jacket.
