This Classic Detroit Wedding Displays the True Beauty of the City
Newlyweds Sarah and Andrew "are just really frickin' cool people," raved Erin of E Schmidt Photography. The photographer said she loved working with them on their big day in Detroit.
"I felt like I've known them forever," she said. "Not to mention, they are so in love. One part of their day that I particularly loved was that morning, they woke up early and met for coffee before all of the crazy wedding stuff started. Like I said, they are so in love. Like deep-rooted, knock-you-on-your-butt love."
The sweet couple gave each other letters that same morning and wrote their own vows, which blew Erin away.
"They laughed, they danced, they took pictures outside (props to them - it was PRETTY frosty out there and they don't look cold in a single shot!), and had the beautiful wedding they imagined," she said. "Sarah and Andrew - I love your love. It's beautiful and inspiring and I'm so thankful I got to not only photograph your day, but also get to know how rad you are."
Sarah's favorite memory of the day? Everything.
"But if I have to pick one thing, it would be Andrew's vows," Sarah said. Andrew's favorite memory was getting coffee with his beloved early in the morning before the beautiful chaos ensued.
The couple has a few words of wisdom for engaged couples: "Make time for each other during the wedding process, and remember why you're doing all of this in the first place."

A Trainer Shares a 5-Minute, Kickass Ab-Toning Workout You Can Do Anywhere
Let's be completely honest: sometimes your ab routines can become extremely stale and boring. In my opinion, if your workout is boring - and you're dreading it before you begin - the more likely you are to half-ass it or just skip it entirely. I don't like either option.
To prevent just going through the motions or skipping workouts altogether, I created the following five-minute ab workout. In five minutes, you'll strengthen and tone your transverse abdominis (your deep core muscles), your obliques, and your rectus abdominis; working all the layers of your abs is essential to sculpting a six-pack (and don't forget having a clean diet).
The Workout
- This workout should be performed as a circuit; complete 30 seconds of each exercise, then quickly transition to the following exercise. You should aim to take as little rest as possible in between exercises.
- Once you've completed the fifth and last exercise, rest for 60 seconds, then repeat the circuit for one more round.
- Do this workout two to three times a week.

Miss Michigan Perfectly Addressed the Flint Water Crisis During Her Miss America Intro
Though the lucky lady who took home the crown at the 2019 Miss America pageant on Sept. 9 was New York's Nia Franklin, there was one other contestant who made a major impact on the competition, and she did so in a matter of seconds. Emily Sioma, aka Miss Michigan, used her platform to briefly call attention to the water crisis that's been affecting her home state for four years. As she boldly stated during the first half of her introduction: "From the state with 84 percent of the United States' fresh water but none for its residents to drink, I am Miss Michigan, Emily Sioma."

Sioma hails from Grass Lake, MI, but her comment was obviously a reference to the water crisis that's been plaguing Flint, a city that's just a two-hour drive away. Flint's water became contaminated after the city switched its main water source from the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department to the Flint River. By 2015, reports of lead poisoning from nearly 100,000 local residents - most of which are black and from low-income families - began to flood news cycles, and a number of public officials are now facing charges related to the issue. Though measures have been put in place to solve the problem, residents of the city are still heavily reliant on bottled water.

Why My Grandfather's Immigration Story Gives Me Hope
The times we are living in are like no other, and in the current political climate, it seems like Americans are disagreeing more than ever on all kinds of topics and values - particularly immigration.
Immigration can be a tricky subject to converse over. It's such a personal and emotional topic, and in these divisive times, it's often turned into something negative. I was born and raised in the United States, but my parents were not, so for me, the word has recently taken on a whole new meaning.
I had the pleasure of being back in my hometown of Houston, TX, for a few days, and I sat down with my Papa (my maternal grandfather) and my dad to chat with them about their experiences coming to the US from Pakistan many years ago. I was nervous asking them questions, and even more nervous about their answers, but in the end it turned out to be one of the best conversations I'd ever had. I thought their viewpoints might have changed due to all the recent controversy surrounding immigration, but both of them reminded me that while these conversations may bring up some unpleasant memories, they are important because they reinstate the idea of working toward a better future.

When did you come to America for the first time? What was it like?
PAPA: I touched down in 1971 with a student visa and $200 in my pocket. I was young, naive, and I was terrified. I was leaving behind my home, my family - everything I knew and loved - to go to a place where I knew no one and nothing.
DAD: My experience was a little different. I had visited a few times before, but when I came to start a new life here in the early '80s, I was lucky enough to have my older brother here. He had gone to college in the states. He had a wife and family, so I felt more secure, less terrified when I got here. Nonetheless, I knew going forward my life was going to be completely different than it had been in the past. I was obviously nervous, but more importantly, I was ready.
Were you prepared for the culture shock you experienced? How did you cope? Did you feel like family culture in America is different than back home?
DAD: First, I have to say - of course there's a difference, but I hate saying it was a culture shock. People are people; everyone's got friends and family they love, everyone's got the one family member they wish they didn't, everyone's got the same bullsh*t. Even moving from Pakistan to Sugar Land, TX, I never felt like I was in a place where I didn't belong. There were just some obstacles to get through, and from the looks of it, I got through just fine.
PAPA: I agree with your dad for the most part; it's not so much a culture shock as it is an adjustment period, but that's what happens everywhere, isn't it? Didn't you feel like you had to adjust to New York when you left Houston? Like your dad said, people are people. I had friends back home I had less in common with than folks I met along the way here in America, and that's just a testament to humanity: you connect with humans.

What was your reason for leaving your country? Did America meet your expectations? Has it been worth it and why? Would you make the same decision today?
PAPA: Everyone has different reasons. I left personally because I felt as if my children had a better shot here and collectively as a family we would have a better life here with access to more. America has exceeded my expectations. I'm not saying there haven't been hard times - of course there have been - but overall looking back almost 50 years I can't say I made the wrong decision by coming here. My kids have beautiful homes and lives here, my grandchildren have gotten live a life I could have only dreamed about living at their ages. I sacrificed a lot and I regret none of it. Would make the same decision today.
DAD: I personally felt as if I had no future there. My expectations coming here were that if I worked hard, I'd have a good life, and it's been worth it. Having a daughter, I know I made the right decision. I mean, don't get me wrong - you would do great things anywhere because I'm your dad [Author's note: OK, Dad] but in all seriousness - regardless of the climate of today, I do believe you have been able to achieve and live a life yourself that you may have not gotten to in Pakistan.
Of course times are different, now but if someone was immigrating today, what advice would you give to them?
DAD: This is very relative to a person's situation. Many people may want to come to this country not because they want to necessarily leave theirs, but because they might have to for reasons we may not understand. In all other cases, I would say leave your expectations at the door, understand that you are coming here for a new start, and embrace it. It's not about taking on a brand new culture as your own, it's about blending two things together. I never felt like I had to give up my culture to be an American. The best parts of this country are all the cultures that have come here and made it home and created communities together and helped each other out day and in day out. Remember Harvey? Temples, mosques, and churches were all shelters. No one cared about the bullsh*t. Just remember the basics, and everything else you learn as you go.

Noah Centineo Explains How He Got His Scar in a Pretty Ironic Way
If you think you're weird for noticing (and wondering about) the scar on the left side of Noah Centineo's face, don't worry - you're not the only one. Thankfully, the star of Netflix's To All the Boys I've Loved Before and Sierra Burgess Is a Loser finally explained the minor mark on his face in an adorable Buzzfeed video of him answering questions while playing with puppies.
When asked how he got the scar, he reveals, "I got attacked by a dog." He then bursts into laughter at the irony of him playing with puppies while talking about the incident. "I got attacked when I was 6 years old by a Mastiff," he says. "He ripped a hole in my face, so you could see my teeth, my gums, and all the way through my tongue to the other side. There was a massive, gaping hole." Yikes.
But even at the tender age of 6, Noah was understanding and compassionate. "The dog didn't know what it was doing," he continues. "I specifically remember him lunging, being pulled away from him, and then looking back and seeing him cock his head like he didn't really understand what happened. Some people were like, 'Do you wanna put the dog down?' I was crying, like, 'No, he didn't mean to do it!'" His parents ended up getting a different dog - a black lab/German Shepherd/Rottweiler mix - named Mackenzie six weeks after Noah was attacked, and all was well.
Is it too extra of me to want Noah to be the lead in a Dr. Doolittle remake now? Probably.
A New Law & Order Series Is Coming - and Yes, Olivia Benson Will Make an Appearance
A timely series is settling into the Law & Order universe. NBC just announced the addition of Law & Order: Hate Crimes from the franchise's creator Dick Wolf and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit showrunner Warren Leight - and you better believe there will be plenty of crossover between the two.
The new series will center on the New York Police Department's Hate Crimes Task Force, which operates under the Special Victims Unit to fight prejudice-driven threats, harassment, and discrimination of any kind. Being that both units work so closely together, plenty of SVU detectives, like our beloved Olivia Benson, will be making appearances. In fact, Hate Crimes will be introduced during an episode in SVU's 20th season - yes, 20th.
"Twenty years ago when SVU began, very few people felt comfortable coming forward and reporting these crimes, but when you bring the stories into people's living rooms - with characters as empathetic as Olivia Benson - a real dialogue can begin," Wolf said in a press statement. "That's what I hope we can do with this new show in a world where hate crimes have reached an egregious level."
The debut season of Hate Crimes will consist of 13 episodes, and will likely premiere sometime in early 2019.

My Grandparents Were My Neighbors For 16 Years, and It Was Seriously the Best Gift
When I was 2 years old, my parents purchased the house across the street from my grandparents' home. As a kid, I still remember zipping back and forth between homes, ringing my grandparents' door bell, and peering through the mail slot on their front door for any sign of activity. While the idea of anyone - be it a burglar or just a kid without boundaries - peeking into my home seems pretty horrifying, their faces lit up every time they saw it was me.
As the middle child in my family, my grandparents' house was the perfect place to temporarily escape my own full house and bask in undivided adult attention. My grandma and I would chat for hours, elbow deep in baking or art projects. She was a champion listener, and while I still can't make a pie crust from memory, I can remember so many of our long, uninterrupted conversations in remarkable detail.
On top of being my personal haven, my grandparents' house was also the hub for family fun. As kids, we reaped the rewards of house-hopping during the holidays, decorating multiple Christmas trees, debuting our Halloween costumes across the street to kick off trick-or-treating with our first pit stop, and hunting for what felt like baskets of Easter eggs. Aside from it being a blast for us, my mom and grandma got to tag team on holiday duties, divvying it up according to their passions and talents. My mom will forever be the more enthusiastic pumpkin carver, while my grandma still insists on dyeing her own Easter eggs.
When I turned 18 and moved out of state for college, my parents sold our house and relocated to a nearby suburb, but my grandparents stayed in their house and live there still. Now that I'm the mom of a 2-year-old, I realize more than ever what a gift those years living across the street from my grandparents really was. When we make the short drive to my parents' house and pull up to their driveway, I always steal a look in the rear view window to watch my toddler's face. His excitement melts me every single time. And as a working mom with a husband who works a shift schedule, there's nothing better than being able to have a night off from cooking dinner to eat with them, or being able to sit with a glass of wine while my son runs circles around my parents, the three of them thrilled to just be together.
I know how much it meant to me to have my grandparents as neighbors, but I finally understand what it must have meant to my parents and my grandparents. While I haven't continued the family neighbor legacy, I'd like to some day. For now, I'm grateful just knowing they're a short car ride away.

Thank you for paving the way for a better future not only for your own daughter, but for little girls everywhere - mine included.
At this year's US Open, you stood your ground against the umpire in the tense and emotional finals. You called him out for sexism and were penalized for referring to him as a "liar" and a "thief." I watched as you were mistreated. And I watched as you stood up not only for yourself, but for all women. Instead of fighting for what's right, people said you had a "meltdown" and a "temper tantrum." When men act this way, they're revered. If they argue with an ump or referee, then they're passionately fighting for themselves or their team. But if a strong woman does it, she's seen as too damn emotional. I call bullsh*t. And I know you do, too.
I applaud you for sticking up for yourself. It shows my daughter that she has a right to her dreams, that she needs to fight for what she believes in, and that staying silent is never an option, especially when you want to see real change in this world. You know who you are, and you're not about to let a man tell you differently. That's exactly the kind of role model I want for my daughter. When she watches you, she can know that if she ever feels wronged by someone, she should absolutely speak up. You give that to my daughter. You.
As women, we've been told to be quiet and "behave" for far too long. We've been instructed to listen to authority, appease men, and be seen, not heard. We've been getting louder at saying "no more," and your actions continue to fuel that long-overdue fire. Women have had enough, and I'm thankful for the timing of it. My daughter is only 4, but I want her to see women like you (and me) stand our ground. She'll grow up knowing that her strength isn't something to hide or contain - it's something to be proud of, even if it pisses off other people sometimes.
I hope that because my daughter's still young, actions like yours will make the world she'll grow up in a more equal place. She'll know not to accept it when teachers tell her that when boys are rebellious and acting out, they're "just being boys," but she should learn how to behave and wait her turn. She'll know that her voice and opinion matter. She'll know that nobody can tell her who she is.
So, thank you, Serena, for being a role model to my daughter, even if you don't realize you are. My daughter, and a countless number of other little girls, are watching and listening. And the next time any one of them is treated unfairly, I hope they'll stand up and speak. They, like you, won't be having a "meltdown" or a "temper tantrum." They'll be demanding to be heard, and it's about damn time people listen.

Ways to Make Your Child's Birthday Special When It Falls on 9/11
Although Patriot Day in the United States was created to commemorate the tragic events that unfolded on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, the day is most commonly referred to by its date, as 9/11. Because of this, anyone who answers the question of when their birthday is with "Sept. 11" immediately faces a range of reactions, from people talking about where they were the day the Towers fell to sentiments of sympathy over having to share a birth date with one of the most tragic days in recent history.
If your child's birthday falls on Sept. 11, it's possible that they weren't even a thought back in 2001, which could make the fact that their birth date holds a certain heaviness even more difficult for them to understand and for you to explain. However, celebrating a birthday shouldn't feel forbidden or taboo, regardless of the date, which is why it's definitely OK to make your child feel special on their birthday, the way you would if it were any other day of the year.
That said, because of the sensitivity of the day, it's understandable that some parents might feel a bit uncomfortable celebrating a little one's birthday without acknowledging the significance of the day at the very least. If you fall into that camp, here are a few ways to help make it so that your child gets to celebrate their birthday without feeling like it's completely stigmatized.
Have a party a few days before or after.
Even on a year when Sept. 11 falls on a weekend, you might opt to plan a birthday bash for your little one the weekend before or after. This way, you eliminate the potential for anyone in attendance feeling conflicted or uncomfortable celebrating and your child can feel all the love of their family and friends without there being a certain air over the party.
Set up decorations in the house a week before.
Celebrate their "birthday week" with balloons and streamers around the house that you can set up a week or so before their birthday. This will allow them to celebrate the coming day fully and not feel as though their birthday is tainted and unable to be celebrated just like any other kids' (especially if they have siblings - you don't want your September baby to feel as though their birthday is approached differently).
Have a moment of silence on the morning of Sept. 11 as a family.
Having a quiet moment to remember all those who lost their lives on Sept. 11 serves as a way for you and your child to acknowledge the events of the day together. Once your child is old enough to understand what took place on that day, they might feel guilty about celebrating their birthday, so doing this every year will allow them to get comfortable with putting themselves aside for a few minutes before celebrating what should be a happy day by all other accounts.
Add an extra candle to their cake in remembrance.
It's not your child's fault that the events of Sept. 11 occurred, nor is there any way to change the date of their birth, so to make the best of it while still respecting the day, let them have that giant slice of birthday cake after dinner, but you could choose to add an extra candle in honor of those who lost their lives and their families.

Not 1 Person Told Me That When I Delivered My Baby, I'd Have to Do It on an Empty Stomach
I'm an athlete. I've always been an athlete. I started playing competitive sports at a young age, begged my parents to go to sports camp, and ended up even going to graduate school to pursue a master's degree in sports management because I just couldn't foresee a life in which I wasn't somehow connected to the thrill of fitness. While I was a mediocre athlete, I know a thing or two about training.
Which is why I'm still completely shook that from the moment I checked into the hospital for delivery, they put me on a completely liquid diet. And not just any liquids, clear liquids. Water. Apple juice. Frozen lemony ice-sorbet. If there's anything you shouldn't do before an intense workout, it's NOT EAT.
I blinked when the nurses handed me a jug of watered-down apple juice. "Can I have smoothies? That's a liquid," I asked, stomach growling. They shook their heads. "Clear liquids, dear."
I checked into the hospital around 11 p.m. on a Tuesday night. I'd last eaten around 7:30 p.m. that night. By the time I was ready to push, it had been nearly 24 hours since I'd consumed anything besides water and slushies.
From there, the marathon continued. An uphill battle of pain and active pushing went on for exactly two hours and 10 minutes until I was completely out of gas. I had absolutely nothing left in me, not surprisingly, since I hadn't eaten a thing. Tears trickled down my cheeks from frustration, and then, triggered from salty tears hitting my empty stomach, I vomited everywhere (legs still up in the air pushing, mind you). On my hospital gown. On my hospital bed. All over the hospital floor.
Equating labor to running at a sprint pace, a quick "calories burned" online calculator suggests I would've burned somewhere around 2,200 calories. At my most fit I've played an entire day's worth of competitive volleyball, which probably burns nowhere near 2,200 calories, and even then, I spent all downtime refueling and hydrating. Never would I have shown up for a tournament on an empty stomach and have pushed through back-to-back matches on clear fluids only.
I wish I had known ahead of time that my hospital would've prevented me from eating food. (I later learned they do that as a precaution in case they have to administer anesthesia and perform a C-section.) I don't know exactly what I could have done to change that - it's a safety precaution, after all - but I would have at least stopped at In-N-Out on the way in and gone to town on some secret menu items.
