How Versailles Is Helping 1 Transgender Man Find Comfort in Femininity
When I was 14 years old and first knew I was transgender, the only LGBTQ+ history I knew about was Stonewall, the AIDS crisis, and recent acts of violence and discrimination against the gay community. That's pretty discouraging when you're a scared and confused queer kid, now convinced your future will be full of prejudice and bigotry. Since I didn't like learning history much in school, I'd go home and watch TV shows or read books all about it. To this day, my bookshelf is lined with historical nonfiction, despite the degree I'm studying having nothing to do with history.
So, when I discovered Versailles - I caught my parents watching an early episode of season three here in the UK - I immediately fell in love with the breathtaking scenery and glamorous costumes, watching people who lived and breathed live and breathe all over again right on my screen. I watched the entire first two seasons in one weekend to catch up. I think it's safe to say I was hooked. Being a theatre student, I like to imagine myself someday being in a period drama like Versailles, bringing someone back to life and immersing myself in their story. Plus, honestly, I'm dying to wear one of those fancy coats.
I worry a lot about how I present myself and how people perceive me, thinking things like "you can see my chest binder through this shirt, there's no way I'm passing as male" and "these jeans are from the women's section, I hope no one notices." I spend an eternity rummaging through my wardrobe, changing outfits over and over just to find something comfortable (both physically and mentally) that doesn't amplify my gender dysphoria and that helps me pass as male to others. In times like these when I feel like everything fits wrong and there's nothing I can do to mask my unwanted feminine features, I remember episode two of Versailles: When Philippe, Duke of Orleans and brother to King Louis XIV, first walked into that salon full of members of the court, all my wardrobe worries seemed silly. There he was: on the arm of another man, dressed in a beautiful gown with his head held high. And he was a war hero! When people thought him weak just because he was effeminate, he proved them wrong. As soon as one courtier dared give him strife, he defended himself without shame. My parents probably just saw some guy in a dress beating the hell out of a nobleman, but in Philippe, I saw a shining light. To me, he is the personification of strength and beauty living in harmony. The perfect balance of masculinity and femininity.
Femininity is a thing I've often despised. More specifically, my own femininity. I can often be seen as very camp in my behavior, and my body type just doesn't allow for some more masculine clothing. I hate my feminine curves, my feminine voice, my feminine body language. The list seems to go on and on. I live for the days I finally start hormone therapy to lower my voice, grow facial hair, and get a more masculine figure. Yet, sometimes I can embrace my femininity. I wear women's clothes and buy things in bright and "feminine" colors but I fear that, when I hopefully have a full beard and a deep voice, these things will be frowned upon even more than they are now. I hear or think the words "not trans enough" far too often. People look at the way I dress or act and decide that I am not trans simply because of their own outdated perceptions of what a man or a woman is. Philippe, the skilled warrior and ethereal beauty, has taught me to stand strong and proud under the scrutiny of people like this. He taught me that my increasingly masculine appearance doesn't mean I have to abandon my feminine traits. I can still be exactly who I am, wear whatever I want, do what makes me happy, and still be the man I've always meant to be. What other people deem masculine or feminine shouldn't affect my own personal definitions of the words.

The final episode of Versailles's season three aired here in the UK earlier this Summer, and one line, spoken by Philippe to his older brother as they gaze upon a painting of themselves in their childhood, resonated with me deeply: "Who would've thought a little girl like that would one day save the king's life?" I have two older brothers and an older stepbrother - all very traditionally masculine - to be compared to, and I often feel like I must act differently and work harder to, in some way, be their equal. I suspect my parents don't believe I will actually follow through with my transition and that it's still, even after five years, "just a phase." Someday, I hope to prove them wrong and look back at myself, thinking: "Who would've thought a little girl like that would one day grow up to be such a strong, confident, and independent man?"
On Aug. 29, I had the privilege of meeting Philippe himself, Alexander Vlahos, when he starred in Romeo and Juliet at the pop-up Shakespeare's Rose Theatre in York, England. I spent most of my Summer thinking I wouldn't get to see it - it was a long way to travel, and I couldn't afford it - and the more I thought about it, the more it broke my heart. That was until one day I was at Shakespeare's Globe in London. Standing amongst the other groundlings, feeling the euphoria I get from seeing Shakespeare live, I decided I could not miss out on seeing Alex as Romeo. My parents agreed to pay for most of the trip as a birthday present and so, a few weeks later, I was on my way. I traveled over 200 miles to York from my little village in Berkshire, filled with anticipation and hoping that I'd get the chance to speak to Alex.

When my chance came, I don't think I've ever been so nervous. Despite spending most of my life on stage, I've never been very good at speaking when I'm anxious, and so I was short of breath, shaking, and my stomach felt like it was doing somersaults. However, Alex couldn't have been kinder. I explained that I was transgender and queer as well as the youngest of four brothers, telling him how much I related to Philippe. Alex replied saying that Philippe is many people's "way in" to Versailles, and it warmed my heart to hear him speak of other people like me finding inspiration or an escape in Philippe. Alex was, of course, fantastic in the play. I was completely in awe, and I don't think I've ever felt more inspired by a performance in my life. He is even more mesmerizing on stage than he is on screen, and I hope to see him in his next role soon.
If I'm honest, the thought of so many people reading this terrifies me, but Versailles is such a brilliant show. It's very special to so many people, and maybe if someone like me reads this, I could introduce them to exactly what they need. I am so glad I found this show, this actor, and this character, and I will forever be grateful for the joy they've given me.
The first two seasons of Versailles are streaming on Netflix. The third and final season premieres on Ovation on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.
These Jake Gyllenhaal Pictures Just Brightened My Day and Cleared All My Debts
Jake Gyllenhaal has been keeping a seemingly low profile as of late, and to be honest, I was beginning to get worried that he had retired from acting or, even worse, started dating someone behind my back. Thankfully, Jake has recently ramped up his public appearances while promoting his new film Wildlife - and I'm pleased to see that my 5'11.5" actor bae is alive, well, and still devastating to look at. No word on whether he's seeing anyone, but I'm staying optimistic!
On Sunday, Jake attended a special screening of the movie at the New York Film Festival. He was joined by his costar Carey Mulligan and screenwriters Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan and posed for photos with Ben Stiller and his daughter, Ella, during an afterparty. Jake also hit the stage to talk up the film, which follows the end of a marriage in 1960s Montana. At the event, Jake wore a sleek blue polo shirt that showed off his arms and brought out his gorgeous baby blues - needless to say, I'm shaking a little. It's so nice to know that some people still indulge me in my fantasy relationships with them. Thank you, Jake.
Debra Messing Tells the Story of How She First Got Cast on Will & Grace
Image Source: Getty / Kevin Winter
Last year, Will & Grace returned with an exceptional new revival that delighted audiences and critics alike with its signature edge. Behind the scenes, though, not everything clicked back in. In fact, our resident Grace aka Debra Messing said it took a few episodes before she really found her stride again. "The whole first season, I kind of felt like I went through it in shock," Debra said during an interview on the show's iconic set. I had been lucky enough to visit last month, just ahead of the revival's second season.
"It took me about three episodes to feel like I got back into the bones of Grace," Messing continued. "I did have moments in the beginning where I saw that I was dressed like Grace, I saw that I was in Grace's apartment and in her office, but I didn't quite feel like her yet. And that was a very kind of scary, uncomfortable feeling." Messing said it was the physical comedy that really brought her back to the character. Specifically, if you watched the return of the show, it was the scene with Karen (Megan Mullally) when the two get stuck in an airtight shower that slowly fills with water. (I promise it's funnier than it sounds.)
Perhaps it's not just the decade-long hiatus that made it a bit difficult to reacquaint with Grace. This time around, the special character is even more three-dimensional, more self-assured, and more feminist than ever before. And that's what makes her so endlessly entertaining and intriguing. Messing spilled all the fun details about season two and just what made Grace so notable during the show's new run. And, as a special bonus, she told the story about how she landed the role in the first place.
- On Grace's "political" turn in season two: "Well, Grace is running for president of the New York Society of Interior Design, but she might as well be running for president of the United States, because she takes it that seriously. As we know, Grace is very competitive . . . I'm hoping that she gets a little dirty, because dirty would be funny."
- On a moment that really demonstrates Grace's newfound feminism: "One of my favorite episodes from last season was the episode at the baby shower, where Grace made it very clear that not having a baby was her choice, and that you can be happy and be motherless, be childless . . . It was very pro-woman because it wasn't defensive."
- On Grace's newfound feminism in the revival: "In the run of the show, Grace was very ambitious - which was great - and very accomplished, and disciplined. But really, her focus was, 'OK, when am I going to find my man and the man who I'm going to have a baby with?' And that was the thread through the entire run of the show. I think now that we see that she's not married, and she doesn't have a baby, and she's not going to have a baby, it's a different Grace. And I like being able to see her happy with the choices that she's made, and really flourishing professionally, and really being fed emotionally by her deep relationships with her friends who are her chosen family."

- How she first got cast as Grace Adler: "I was doing a TV show on ABC called Prey, and I had finished, and I was exhausted. And I had told my agents, 'Don't call me for three months. I'm going to sleep for three months.' And the next day, they called and said, 'We have a script that you need to read.' And I said, 'Nope. I am going to sleep.' And they said, 'Stay in bed. We will messenger it to you.' And so I read it in bed, and I was like, 'Oh, boy. This is something.' And I recognized how unusual it is to see four distinctly written characters in the pilot of a show. But I still was tired.
"And so I met Max and Dave, the showrunners, and they were like, 'We want you.' And then I went home. I'm like, 'I don't know.' And then they were like, 'What do we need to do?' And I said, 'I need to know how you envision this show in season three and season four,' because you're too young to remember this, but at that time, there was a trend going on at NBC that had women as the center of a show, but they were not the funny people. So there was Suddenly Susan. There was Caroline in the City. So there were these pretty, attractive women, and then they had the goofy people around them. And I said, 'I won't be happy doing that. I need to be one of the funny people also.'
"And so I said, 'I need to tell you my concerns.' And also, I came from New York and had a lot of gay friends, and I was like, 'How are you going to do this? Are you going to do it in a different way than has ever been done before?' And so they came over with a bottle of vodka [laugh], and spent three hours answering all my questions, and left. And they said, 'So?' And I said, 'I still don't know.'
"And then Eric [McCormack] flew down from Canada - he was filming Lonesome Dove at the time - and we went to Jim Burrows's house. And I went in, and all of the bigwigs from NBC were there. And they were like, 'Just read together.' And we read together, and it just was immediately easy and fun. And Jimmy walked me to the car, and he's like, 'You got to do the show.' And I was like, 'Jimmy, I don't know.' And he was like, 'You're never going to find a script like this again. You got to do the show.' And so I was like, 'When Jim Burrows tells you you got to do a show, you got to do a show.'"
Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck Meet Up For Sunday Service After His Rehab Stay
Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck attended church together in LA on Sunday. The estranged couple, who announced their plans to divorce back in 2015, were joined by their three kids, Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel, for the sunny afternoon service. Jen and Ben have been staying committed to coparenting their children since their split, and it was Jen who staged an intervention and drove Ben to rehab in August. The actor recently completed a 30-day program for alcohol addiction, though he has been spotted taking frequent breaks from the Malibu facility and is rumored to be staying for a few more weeks.
Despite their ups and downs, Jen apparently has no plans to stop supporting her ex-husband. "She wants to give their kids the best life possible," Us Weekly reported, adding that she and Ben are currently on "good terms," even though he "does things that piss her off." Keep reading to see Ben and Jen's latest family church date.
How Is Princess Eugenie Related to William and Harry? Well, That's an Easy One
Princess Eugenie is set to walk down the aisle on Oct. 12, and her impending nuptials are inspiring interest in everything from what she'll wear and who's on the guest list to what her new title will be and what her family dynamic is like. While the public is aware that Eugenie's "family dynamic" is a tad more high-profile than most considering her royal status, some are still confused about Eugenie's relation to more well-known royals like Prince William and Prince Harry.
There's not a whole lot to it, actually: Eugenie is William and Harry's first cousin. Will and Harry's father, Prince Charles, is the brother of Eugenie's father, Prince Andrew. Andrew married Sarah Ferguson in July 1986, five years after Charles married Princess Diana; there are even cute photos of 4-year-old William yawning throughout the ceremony, where he acted as pageboy. The boys' late mother, Princess Diana, was also close friends with Sarah, and their children grew up together between palaces and spent holidays with their grandparents at Balmoral and Sandringham. Will, Harry, and Eugenie have shared lots of sweet public moments over the years as well, especially at sporting events and family functions. Keep reading to see some of them now!
Why Mindy Kaling Says Her Four Weddings and a Funeral Reboot Will Star a "Really Unusual" Cast
Like most of us, Mindy Kaling loves going out to eat. And, like most of us, she acknowledges that babies - including her 9-month-old daughter, Katherine - aren't always the most sophisticated restaurant companions. "She loves to come out to eat, but she just gets distracted and makes a huge mess," Mindy admits when I meet her at the W Hotel in Hollywood. "So I'll take her with my friend [and former costar on The Mindy Project] Ike Barinholtz. We'll go out to breakfast with our daughters at, like, 7 a.m., before anyone's there, and then they can just make a big mess."
The fact that Mindy is such an early bird should surprise no one. Not only is the actor, author, and producer in the middle of editing Late Night - a movie she wrote and acts in alongside the Emma Thompson - but she is about to head to London to work on a Hulu reboot of the rom-com classic Four Weddings and a Funeral, too. Did I mention that it's only 9 a.m. and, while basic mortals like me are still on our first cup of coffee, she looks ready to dominate a Fortune 500 board meeting in a sharp-as-can-be Roland Mouret pencil dress?
Outside the demands of her Hollywood career and motherhood, Mindy is also at work on a very different kind of project. The Make It a Date effort encourages people to dine out with a friend or loved one on Oct. 10. When they do, Mastercard will donate up to $4 million to Stand Up To Cancer - $1 when you spend $10 or more. There's particular resonance to Mindy's involvement with the campaign. Mindy's own mother, Swati Roysircar, died of pancreatic cancer in 2012, an experience she says was "devastating."
I talked to Mindy about finding the joy in combating the disease and supporting the Stand Up to Cancer cause, why her multiracial spin on Four Weddings and a Funeral will be "unusual" on purpose, and, yes, her lifelong soft spot for the chain restaurant Chili's.
12 New Movies Everyone and Their Mother Will Be Talking About This October
Halloween may not be until the end of the month, but that won't stop us from seeking thrills all October long - and luckily, this month's new movie offerings look seriously scary. From murderous wives to murderous masked men to murderous ballerinas (seriously!), the next month has as many thrillers and slasher films as it has dark comedies and tearjerkers, as well as some remakes and adaptations that we've been dying to see. Here are 12 movies you're not going to want to miss this October.
We're Still Screaming Over the Freaky Suspiria Ending - 4 Decades Later
Before Buffy Summers fought vampires or Veronica Sawyer charmed us softly with a chainsaw, pop culture celebrated another scream queen: Jessica Harper's gritty Suzy Bannion in Dario Argento's 1977 Italian horror movie Suspiria. A contemporary of '70s horror classics such as Halloween and The Exorcist, the film will now join the reboot wave. Needless to say, the upcoming horror film is in capable hands. Call Me by Your Name's Luca Guadagnino helms the 2018 remake with a star-studded cast that features Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, Chloë Grace Moretz, and even Harper herself. The new movie, of course, will likely differ from its predecessor as revamps usually do. But in case you need a refresher or want to get down to the nitty-gritty of the original film, we'll dive right into the bloody, beating heart of the story. So yes, we have spoilers ahead!
The story begins as many a horror movie do: on a dark and stormy night. Suzy Bannion, an American ballet student, arrives at the Tanz Dance Academy in Germany. When she gets there, she sees a young woman named Pat (as her name is later revealed) running out the door. Pat tells her something, but it's drowned out by the sound of thunder. We then see Pat seeking refuge in her friend's apartment, though it doesn't stay a refuge for very long. A mysterious presence grabs Pat and repeatedly stabs her. It puts a noose around her neck and flings her onto the roof, which then shatters, hanging her in the process and taking her friend as collateral damage with the broken glass.
Undoubtedly, weird things happen when Suzy meets the vice directress Madame Blanc and a teacher named Miss Tanner. During a dancing lesson, Suzy, who's being egged on by her instructor to keep dancing, faints. She ends up resting in a dorm room and befriending her neighbor Sara, who had been friends with Pat. As a part of her recovery routine, she must drink a glass of wine each night (naturally).
Soon after, maggots fall from the ceiling in the dorms, so the students sleep in the practice hall. That night, Sara hears a whistling snore from behind the makeshift curtain in the hall, telling Suzy that she thinks it's the director, who isn't supposed to be home yet. Fast forward to one brutally murdered piano player later, Sara realizes that her notes from Pat are missing and enlists Suzy's help. Someone enters the room. But of course, Suzy knocks out because - surprise surprise - she's been drugged the whole time! Sara escapes from the room but ends up with a slit throat and in a pile of razor wire.
Searching for Sara, Suzy becomes suspicious and contacts her friend's psychologist, Dr. Frank Mandel, who explains to her that the academy was founded by Helena Markos, a Greek émigré widely believed to be a witch. Mandel's colleague, a professor who studies witches, then tells her that a coven can't survive without their leader. Very ominous advice indeed, so keep it in mind.
Returning to the dorms, Suzy finds out that everyone is out watching a performance. Back in her room, she hears footsteps. She chucks her food and wine, then tracks the footsteps, ending up in Blanc's office. There are iris paintings on the wall, which Pat had talked to Suzy about the night she died. After finding a secret door behind the wall, Suzy hears Blanc and the teachers plotting her death. Yikes. So she creeps quietly into another room, where Helena Markos is sleeping. The witch wakes up when Suzy knocks over a peacock statue and commands Sara's mutilated corpse to go after her. Suzy, who only sees Markos's flickering apparition, takes her best stab, which kills Markos and prompts Sara's body to drop. The witches in the first room then choke to death without their leader. Suzy dashes out of the academy, which crumbles in flames.
Are there even more hidden layers to this story in the 2018 movie? Will we find out if Swinton is actually the elderly gentleman in the remake? We'll just have to wait and see when the film comes out, days before Halloween, on Oct. 26. In the meanwhile, you can watch the creepy trailer, which we guarantee will induce spine-chilling nightmares.
Sean Hayes and His "Role of a Lifetime" on Will & Grace: "I'm Lucky to Be Here"
Image Source: Getty / Monica Schipper
We can't believe it's been 20 years since Will and Grace first, uh, graced us with its presence. And the funny thing is, neither can the rest of the cast. In September, I was lucky enough to visit the set of the exciting reboot that returned full force last year, delivering the same ridiculous, razor-sharp hilarity we fell in love with during the initial run. "Time is a funny thing," Sean Hayes said during an interview on set that day. He's been nailing it as the iconic Jack McFarland for the show's entire run. "I mean, at the same time, it feels 20 years and two weeks at the same exact same time. So I'm lucky to be here. I'm lucky for the gig. I'm very fortunate to have been given this role of a lifetime."
Role of a lifetime, indeed. It's not just that Hayes has been bringing the laughs as Jack; the character broke ground as one of the first unapologetically gay leads on network television, at a time when being gay was much less OK than it is in 2018. During our interview, I couldn't help but ask about the fact that Jack presents as your stereotypically feminine gay man, a practical lean-to of early gay depictions on television. We were lucky enough to see Jack bloom and become more three-dimensional over the show's run, despite his seemingly overwrought origins. But Hayes thinks Jack works so well because he lives his truth, and there are plenty of gay men like him in the world.
In 2018, there's almost more room for Jack than there was before. Now, there are more queer characters on TV than ever before, and the spectrum that comes as a result puts less pressure on Jack to be like this or like that. Even so, Hayes maintains that he's always been written with care, and he's always been a contrast to the title character, Will - the two of them will always represent the broad spectrum of gay men that exists in reality. Keep reading for more wise insights from the incredible actor; it's clear there's so much more to Jack than meets the eye. As a longtime fan of the show, even I was blown away by his take.
- On Jack being a "stereotypical" gay man in the original run: "I think that stereotypes are stereotypes because they're true, right? The press used to say, when the show first started, that 'Jack is the stereotypical gay one, and Will is the more masculine gay one,' or whatever they said. And to me, that's just kind of an uneducated statement to make. That means you don't know gay people. I'm gay, and I was playing Jack, so obviously, part of Jack lives inside of me. So, to me, that's normal. And I have tons of friends that make me laugh that are gay like Jack, so that's a stereotype and not a stereotype at the same time. How is it a stereotype if all of those people exist in my life? So I just think that was a lazy way for the press to report on the show."
- How there's actually more room for a character like Jack in 2018: "The goal of the show was never to educate people, but I think it was a byproduct of the show: we educated people through laughter and comedy. It's 2018. Hopefully, people are more aware of the different spectrum of gay people, like the different spectrum of straight people, like the different spectrum of black people and Latin people and Asian people, all people around the world. If you are a straight, white Republican and you can't see past that, then you're not understanding what the world consists of. There are straight, white Republicans that do understand that, and I wish they would be more vocal about it."
- On a funny moment we can expect coming up: "In this season, there's an episode where Jack finds a box of pictures of Estefan's ex-boyfriend, and they all look gorgeous to Jack. And so he tries to find a plastic surgeon to do the same thing. And in order to do that, he has to put numbing cream on before they do the procedure and I'll leave it at that. And that, to me, was one of the most fun physical things I've ever done."
- On the numbing cream bit and its backstory: "So, I just thought of this idea that, 'Wouldn't it be funny if Jack mistook numbing cream for SPF tanning lotion and he put it all over his body? And then he couldn't walk, do whatever, right?' And so John Quaintance who wrote that script, who's a brilliant writer and a good friend of mine, he changed it to numbing cream on my face. And I got the idea, I was inspired by the idea from an old Carol Burnett sketch with Tim Conway and Harvey Korman where - I don't know if you know it - but Tim Conway is a dentist and Harvey Korman's in the chair and Tim, instead of giving the patient Novocaine, he shot his arm by mistake, then couldn't use his arm, then couldn't use his body. And it just made me laugh out loud so hard. So they took that and ran with it. The funny thing about that is David Kohan, who's one of the cocreators of the show, his father wrote that sketch."

There's no doubt that A Star Is Born is going to be one of the hottest movies of the Fall (and probably of the upcoming awards season judging by early reactions). Mayans MC Will Ride Again For a Second Season on FX
Four episodes into its first season, FX announced it's renewing Mayans MC for a second season. "Mayans MC is performing fantastically, proving to be a breakout first season," said Nick Grad, president of original programming at FX Networks and FX Productions on Monday. "The series premiered as the highest rated cable series this year and continues to sustain a committed fan base. We couldn't be more excited to take this ride to a second season."
A spinoff of Sons of Anarchy, the series is set in the aftermath of SOA and follows Ezekiel "EZ" Reyes (JD Pardo), a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the California-Mexico border. Glee's Lauren Potter Has a Message For Hollywood on Hiring People With Down Syndrome: "You Won't Be Disappointed"
Lauren Potter grew up with one big dream: to become a successful actress in Hollywood. As a child with Down syndrome, she faced a lot of challenges on her way to the top, mainly people telling her she wouldn't make it. Her reaction? To just keep going. "I only listened to the people who told me I could," she told POPSUGAR when we recently chatted with her about Disability Employment Awareness Month, which is this October. "Don't ever give up your dreams, no matter how hard it is or how impossible it seems."
And Lauren was great at taking her own advice. In 2009, she landed the role of a lifetime when she was cast as cheerleader Becky Jackson on the hit show Glee, which she continued to star in until the series ended in 2015. Since then, the 28-year-old has also guest starred on shows like Veep and Switched at Birth, in addition to touring the country and giving motivational speeches at conferences across the US.
While she's searching for her next big role right now, she continues to do her part to raise awareness for people with disabilities - or "differently-abled" people - not only in Hollywood, but in every workforce. "Everyone I know with DS works hard and gives 100 percent of themselves," she told POPSUGAR. "We're all more alike than different!" To see what else she had to say about her impressive career path, her all-time favorite costar, and the best career advice she's ever gotten (hint: it came from Glee's Jane Lynch!), keep reading.
POPSUGAR: Growing up, how did you handle people telling you that you wouldn't be able to have the dream career you wanted?
Lauren Potter: I did have people that told me that I couldn't do certain things, so, as I always say, I only listened to those who told me I could. My parents told me I could do anything as long as I tried hard. My mom did tell me that acting would be hard, but also that I could do it!
PS: Did you always know you wanted to be an actress? How did you go about making your dreams come true?
LP: Yes, absolutely. I performed all the Disney movies for my family and friends, and I also knew all the Disney songs and dances. I don't sing well, but I love to sing a lot! I just knew I wanted to act. I started dance classes when I was 3 and just loved performing. I knew then that acting was the career for me.
PS: What's one obstacle you've overcome in your career that you're really proud of?
LP: I'm really proud that I have Down syndrome and have been able to grow as an actor and show the world that Down syndrome doesn't stop me, and that I think I've become a really good actor. And I think I have some part in opening the doors for other actors with disabilities.
PS: What's something you still struggle with?
LP: I sometimes struggle to overcome life's challenges to become who I want to be. I just want to be accepted for who I am, and to be like everyone else. I want people to know who I really am and who I will truly be. I'm working hard on becoming the best I can be. Right now, I struggle with getting back to work and having someone recognize what I've accomplished and giving me another chance in a great role.
PS: Was there ever a moment you thought you couldn't do it? If so, how did you push through that?
LP: I guess so, but I have a lot of people around me who tell me to get off my butt and try harder. I think I used to feel that way when I was younger, but I've grown up a lot and have learned to push through. I sometimes get discouraged when I have an audition and I don't get the part, but I know I just have to keep trying!
PS: What advice do you have for someone else with a disability who wants to have a career and follow their dreams?
LP: Well, don't ever give up your dreams, no matter how hard it is or how impossible it seems! I want all people with or without disabilities to follow their hearts, follow their paths, and never give up their dreams. I hope I am proof that it can happen!
PS: What advice would you give to your younger self who was just starting out in her career?
LP: I would tell myself not to be afraid or scared or nervous around others, and to always be my very best self. I think I was a little difficult when I was younger, and I wouldn't be like that again.
PS: What do you want employers to know about people with Down syndrome applying for jobs?
LP: Employers should know that they will not go wrong hiring a person with Down syndrome. Not only will they be helping someone reach their goal of working, but they and other employees will learn so much about acceptance and love. Everyone I know with DS works hard and gives 100 percent of themselves. We're all more alike than different!
PS: What are some misconceptions about people with disabilities in any type of workforce?
LP: I don't really know, but I guess maybe they think we can't do the job, or that it will take too much time to help us learn, but that just isn't true. When I was on Glee, I always knew my lines and everyone else's, too! I never held up filming because I wasn't ready. I worked very hard and was always on time.
PS: What's your favorite part about your job?
LP: I love being part of a cast and crew on set. I love acting, and even learning my lines. And of course, craft service isn't too bad either!
PS: What's your dream acting role?
LP: I love any kinds of acting roles. I'm really good at comedy, but I would also really like to do a dramatic role, but really I love everything. My dream role would be one that wasn't just for someone with Down syndrome, but a really good, strong role for a young woman who is just a good actor.
PS: What's the best career advice you've ever gotten?
LP: Jane Lynch who played Sue Sylvester on Glee once told me in the very beginning of filming when I was still scared: "I know you're new to this, but everything is OK. I'll be here if you want me to help you go over your lines, or just be your friend. You will be awesome." She was always there for me and helped me grow as an actor.
PS: You've had some really awesome roles in your career so far! What's been your favorite and why?
LP: Of Course, I would have to say Becky on Glee. That was so fun and in the six years I was on the show, they let me do some really fun things. There were some scary and dramatic things, too, like when Becky brought a gun to school. But also some really fun ones, like "The Rocky Horror Glee Show" episode, being Lady Gaga and Max the dog from Dr. Seuss' The Grinch, the secret service for Sue, and of course, Helen Mirren doing my voice over (are you kidding me!!!). It was so much fun, and I loved the cast and crew and Ryan, Ian, Brad, and Dante. I didn't want it to ever end!
PS: Who is your favorite actor/actress you've ever worked with? Why?
LP: I love, love, love Jane Lynch. She's so awesome and was always there for me. One of my favorite actors is John Stamos because he's so cute and hot and I LOVED him on Full House and Fuller House. When we worked together on Glee, they called me "Mrs. Stamos" on set because I had a huge crush on him, which was so funny.
PS: What's your advice for how directors/producers/casting directors can make the entertainment industry more diverse and inclusive?
LP: I always say, think outside of the box (my mom taught me that) and give us a chance. You will not be disappointed. I want to be seen as an actress first, then as a really good actress who happens to have Down syndrome. But just because you have DS or some other different ability, that doesn't make you a good actor, you have to work hard and prove you can do it. I just want to be seen as the best actor for the role because I've shown I have what it takes.
PS: Have you seen any changes over the years in how inclusive the entertainment industry has become for people with disabilities?
LP: That's a hard question for me, but I think shows like Glee have made a difference. I still think we need to have more chances, though, and there is still a lot of work to do.
PS: What do you feel is a common misconception people may have about people with disabilities? What do you want to say to people with those misconceptions?
LP: I think people think that we are different with different feelings, but we are WAY more alike than different. I want what everyone wants: to be accepted for me, to have friends, to love someone, and have someone love me, to live independently, to work at my career, to have family and friends around me, and to enjoy living my life.
PS: Who are your biggest role models? Why?
LP: My biggest role model is my mom because she's my number one fan. She's been an awesome and amazing mom, and she's my true friend and my true inspiration.
PS: What projects are you working on now?
LP: I've had a couple of auditions, which sadly I didn't get the roles, but right now I'm waiting for more work. I'm still speaking around the country to tell my story and fight against bullying. I'm waiting for that next great role, and I hope it's coming soon, because I'm SO ready!
This Buzzy Wellness Ingredient Is a Must Have For Pain Relief
Years ago, I started using arnica purely out of vanity; I'm clumsy and I bruise easily. There's nothing fun about accidentally running into something and then having to deal with an unsightly purple mark for the next week, but if you rub arnica on your injury, the bruise is either significantly less noticeable or altogether invisible. The trick is to be generous, especially with creams or gels. The more you apply, the faster you heal. If you've got some kind of pain or need to recover, these arnica products are going to be your best friend.

Cauliflower Crust, Who?! Trader Joe's Now Sells Butternut Squash Pizza Crust
Move over, cauliflower crust - there's a new low-carb superfood pizza crust in town, and it's about to fly off the shelves. Trader Joe's now sells a butternut squash pizza crust made also with corn flour, olive oil, and a touch of salt, according to its packaging.
Instagram account Trader Joe's List (@traderjoeslist) posted a photo of the new gluten-free find, and fans are already going wild. "IM SORRY WHAT I am shook," one person commented. "yassssss no more gassy cauliflower pizza," another wrote. Although we haven't tracked down the exact nutrition information, the package notes that it's gluten-free. And since it needs to be kept frozen, look for this bad boy in the freezer section.
It's made with corn flour, so we can't say for certain that this butternut squash pizza crust is necessarily low-carb enough to be considered keto, but it most likely has fewer carbs than a traditional flour or whole-wheat pizza crust. If you're looking to cut back on carbs and are sick of cauliflower crust, give this butternut squash pizza crust a try! It's probably a good idea to stock up when you see it - this new frozen food is bound to fly off the shelves.

If You're a Keto Newbie, This Keto Food Pyramid Tells You Exactly What to Eat
Are you confused by the keto diet? This popular weight-loss diet involves eating a high-fat, moderate-protein, and extremely low-carb diet. The macro breakdown is 70 to 80 percent fat, 20 to 25 percent protein, and five to 10 percent carbs. It works by putting your body into a state of ketosis, where it burns fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. OK, so what does that mean in terms of what you can eat? You may have heard keto is all about bacon, butter, and fat bombs, but there's more to keto than that.
This keto pyramid posted by Martina Slajerova, creator of the KetoDiet App (@ketodiet_app on Instagram), should help illustrate a little more clearly what you can and need to eat on a keto diet. At the bottom of the pyramid, and the foods you should focus on, are high-fat foods including healthy fats and oils, fatty fish, meat, organ meats, and eggs. This includes olive oil, grass-fed butter, coconut oil, MCT oil, avocado oil, salmon and other seafood, beef, dark-meat chicken, and lamb. You can eat lean protein like white-meat chicken, but you ideally want to focus on high-fat meats.
The next step on the keto diet food pyramid includes non-starchy veggies such as leafy greens including spinach, arugula, and Romaine lettuce, and other greens like cucumbers and zucchini. You're allowed other veggies like peppers, cauliflower, asparagus, eggplant, tomatoes, mushrooms, broccoli, kale, and fresh herbs, but since these contain carbs, you don't want to go overboard. These aren't all-you-can-eat foods, and still need to be tracked to ensure you don't exceed your daily carb limit.
Next on the pyramid is raw, full-fat dairy products, which can help you reach your fat and protein goals for the day. Grass-fed butter, ghee, heavy cream, unsweetened yogurt, sour cream, cheeses like blue, Parmesan, brie, Monterey jack, and mozzarella are allowed, but be mindful of your portions because of their carb count. If you're dairy-free, it's OK to skip this part of the pyramid - you'll still be able to reach ketosis.
Last and top of the pyramid are berries, nuts, and seeds, which need to be eaten in moderation because of their carb content. The best sources of nuts and seeds are pecans, macadamia nuts, walnuts, almonds, pistachios, chia seeds, and flaxseeds. Aim for about one to two tablespoons a day to keep your carbs low. As for berries, go for antioxidant-rich, low-sugar blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and raspberries, with about a quarter-cup serving once a day.
As you can see, your plate on the keto diet will mostly be made up of fatty meat and oils, with a bit of non-starchy veggies, full-fat dairy, and a teeny bit of nuts and berries. You can track your daily macros and calories using an app like My Fitness Pal or KetoDiet to make sure you're hitting your ratios. Since every body is different, you need to tailor this food pyramid to your lifestyle and your goals.

While a little indulging is not a bad thing, it's always helpful to know exactly what's going into your body. See how all the classics like Snickers, Kit Kat, and Twix measure up!

We've Figured Out the Secret to Hilary Swank's Sculpted Arms - It's This 1 Exercise
We have to admit, we love that celebrities are giving us a sneak peek into their lives and beginning to talk about, and show us, their workout routines. Jessica Biel showed us her insane pistol squat skills, every Friday we can count on Halle Berry to give us a new workout to follow, and now, Hilary Swank is getting in on the action.
Hilary shared a video on Instagram of her doing push-ups, and damn, all we can say is that she makes them look incredibly easy. Instead of doing a traditional push-up, Hilary decided to take it to the next level.
With her feet on gliders and on top of a slide board, she lowers down into a push-up while simultaneously abducting her legs (moving them away from the center of her body). Because of the abduction, not only is she working her arms, she's also working her abs and inner thighs. Before you go and try this move, make sure you've got the traditional push-up down pat.
Watch the video above to see just how much of a badass Hilary is.
All the Fitness Gear Keeping Us Motivated This October
October is time for chilly morning runs through the changing foliage, cozying up with a warm mug of coffee or tea, and bundling up in layers. As we embrace the Fall season, take a look at what our Fitness editors are loving this month.
Ciara's Postbaby Workout Routine Sounds SO Intense, I'm Gonna Need to "Level Up"
Ciara has been flaunting her incredibly toned "Goodies" for the last two decades, but believe us when we tell you, her muscular figure takes a lot of hard work. In the November issue of Cosmopolitan, the 32-year-old singer opened up about her postbaby workout regimen since welcoming Sienna Princess Wilson in April of last year, and it's very intense.
"It was kind of like, wake up in the morning, breastfeed, eat a small meal, go train, come back in, breastfeed, eat another meal, go train, then come back, have another meal, and then a third training session at night," she told the publication. "It was a good challenge, one I set for myself, not for anyone else."
Working out three times a day is a lot, especially after just giving birth, but Ciara emphasized that it's for the mental benefits as well as the physical. She said, "Taking care of myself makes me feel really good. And I want to keep it sexy too, you know." Before we pick our jaws up off the floor and run to the gym, let us remind you that it's important to consult a doctor before starting an intense routine like Ciara's.
This isn't the first time Ciara's opened up about her routine and her constant desire to "Level Up." After giving birth to her first child, Future, in 2014, she lost 60 pounds in four months thanks to a rigorous training routine and her love for the treadmill. "I would go to Gunnar [Peterson] first for my one-hour training session, then I'd have two more cardio sessions later in the day. That, along with a really clean eating plan, was how I lost 60 pounds in four months," Ciara told Shape back in 2015.
While all women ease into a fitness routine after giving birth differently, we have to hand it to Ciara - her determination and dedication are unshakable.
I Fasted 12 Hours For 21 Days - Here Are the 3 Major Changes That Happened to My Body
As a fitness editor, I often write about diets like the low-carb, high-fat keto diet and body-type eating to educate people on the various ways they can reach their health goals. I don't follow a specific diet, but I recently decided to try the Clean Program, a 21-day detox created by Dr. Alejandro Junger, after a client of mine raved about it. I took a lot away from my experience on the program, and one component of the cleanse that I found to be extremely effective is the 12-hour fasting window.
12:12 is a type of intermittent fasting (IF) - a way of eating where the body uses fat as an energy source instead of glucose. Instead of eating whenever you want throughout the day, you're limited to consuming your daily caloric intake within a 12-hour window, and then required to fast for the other 12 hours. This means that if you eat dinner at 8 p.m., you won't have breakfast until 8 a.m. the following morning. 12:12 is considered to be the easiest type of IF, and as a rookie, I have to admit is wasn't hard to follow at all. Continue reading to find out the changes that happened to my body over the span of 21 days.
I Felt Extremely Hungry in the Beginning
As suggested by Dr. Junger in his book Clean, I decided to write down my daily meals and how I felt each day on the program. My first three days of notes talk about how terrible I am at making tasty shakes and how hungry I felt when I woke up. Most days, I wake up between 4:45 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. to train clients, work out, and then get to work. Before starting Clean, I would have a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast, and not being able to do this during the cleanse was hard initially.
Around day 10, I began to notice that the extreme feelings of hunger I had experienced were beginning to subside. I won't say that I didn't feel an ounce of hunger as I continued the program, but I no longer felt like I was starving. It also helped that I began hacking my shake the night before, adding more fat and protein to hold me over until I broke the fast.
I Discovered I Had Bloating Issues
I never considered myself to be a person who experienced bloating, except for on my period, but after doing the 12-hour fast for 21 days, I realized that I do get bloated, especially when I consume too much dairy and grains. The pressure, gas, and cramping I had previously experienced at times in my lower abdomen had finally gone away. As I began to reintroduce these food groups back into my diet to identity triggers, I confirmed that consuming too much dairy and grains irritated both my stomach and skin.
I Stopped Mindlessly Snacking
I'm the person who will eat whatever is in my home, whenever. Cocoa Puffs in the kitchen? Definitely eating those. A bag of sweet and salty organic popcorn? Gone in two hours. I also have a habit of eating a meal and then snacking afterward. Not because I'm hungry, but because I'm bored or not in the best of moods. The 12-hour fast helped me notice and reduce this habit, and I'm happy to report that on most days, I've eliminated my snacking-just-to-snack habit.
Overall, I found 12:12 to be extremely easy to follow. I completed the Clean Program a month ago, and although I refuse to completely cut out cookie dough ice cream, this is definitely a habit I plan on keeping.
New Study Finds Vitamin D Deficiency and Obesity Linked to Greater Risk of Breast Cancer
While breast cancer risk increases with age and there are several factors that contribute to developing breast cancer such as genetics and getting older, a new study has found a link between being deficient in vitamin D and an increased risk of breast cancer.
The study, published in Menopause, the journal of the North American Menopause Society (NAMS), involved more than 600 Brazilian women and suggests that vitamin D may reduce the risk of breast cancer. Researchers concluded that postmenopausal women had an increased risk of vitamin D deficiency at the time they were diagnosed with breast cancer compared to women in the same age group without cancer, according to ScienceDaily.
"Although published literature is inconsistent about the benefits of vitamin D levels and breast cancer, this study and others suggest that higher levels of vitamin D in the body are associated with lowered breast cancer risk," said JoAnn Pinkerton, MD, NCMP, executive director of NAMS, according to ScienceDaily. "Vitamin D may play a role in controlling breast cancer cells or stopping them from growing. Vitamin D comes from direct sunlight exposure, vitamin D3 supplements, or foods rich in vitamin D."
The recommended daily allowance of vitamin D is 600 IU, but talk to your doctor to see if you need to supplement with more.
