Glee's Lauren Potter Has a Message For Hollywood on Hiring People With Down Syndrome: "You Won't Be Disappointed"

Lauren Potter grew up with one big dream: to become a successful actress in Hollywood. As a child with Down syndrome, she faced a lot of challenges on her way to the top, mainly people telling her she wouldn't make it. Her reaction? To just keep going. "I only listened to the people who told me I could," she told POPSUGAR when we recently chatted with her about Disability Employment Awareness Month, which is this October. "Don't ever give up your dreams, no matter how hard it is or how impossible it seems."

And Lauren was great at taking her own advice. In 2009, she landed the role of a lifetime when she was cast as cheerleader Becky Jackson on the hit show Glee, which she continued to star in until the series ended in 2015. Since then, the 28-year-old has also guest starred on shows like Veep and Switched at Birth, in addition to touring the country and giving motivational speeches at conferences across the US.

While she's searching for her next big role right now, she continues to do her part to raise awareness for people with disabilities - or "differently-abled" people - not only in Hollywood, but in every workforce. "Everyone I know with DS works hard and gives 100 percent of themselves," she told POPSUGAR. "We're all more alike than different!" To see what else she had to say about her impressive career path, her all-time favorite costar, and the best career advice she's ever gotten (hint: it came from Glee's Jane Lynch!), keep reading.

POPSUGAR: Growing up, how did you handle people telling you that you wouldn't be able to have the dream career you wanted?

Lauren Potter: I did have people that told me that I couldn't do certain things, so, as I always say, I only listened to those who told me I could. My parents told me I could do anything as long as I tried hard. My mom did tell me that acting would be hard, but also that I could do it!

PS: Did you always know you wanted to be an actress? How did you go about making your dreams come true?

LP: Yes, absolutely. I performed all the Disney movies for my family and friends, and I also knew all the Disney songs and dances. I don't sing well, but I love to sing a lot! I just knew I wanted to act. I started dance classes when I was 3 and just loved performing. I knew then that acting was the career for me.

PS: What's one obstacle you've overcome in your career that you're really proud of?

LP: I'm really proud that I have Down syndrome and have been able to grow as an actor and show the world that Down syndrome doesn't stop me, and that I think I've become a really good actor. And I think I have some part in opening the doors for other actors with disabilities.

PS: What's something you still struggle with?

LP: I sometimes struggle to overcome life's challenges to become who I want to be. I just want to be accepted for who I am, and to be like everyone else. I want people to know who I really am and who I will truly be. I'm working hard on becoming the best I can be. Right now, I struggle with getting back to work and having someone recognize what I've accomplished and giving me another chance in a great role.

PS: Was there ever a moment you thought you couldn't do it? If so, how did you push through that?

LP: I guess so, but I have a lot of people around me who tell me to get off my butt and try harder. I think I used to feel that way when I was younger, but I've grown up a lot and have learned to push through. I sometimes get discouraged when I have an audition and I don't get the part, but I know I just have to keep trying!

PS: What advice do you have for someone else with a disability who wants to have a career and follow their dreams?

LP: Well, don't ever give up your dreams, no matter how hard it is or how impossible it seems! I want all people with or without disabilities to follow their hearts, follow their paths, and never give up their dreams. I hope I am proof that it can happen!

PS: What advice would you give to your younger self who was just starting out in her career?

LP: I would tell myself not to be afraid or scared or nervous around others, and to always be my very best self. I think I was a little difficult when I was younger, and I wouldn't be like that again.

PS: What do you want employers to know about people with Down syndrome applying for jobs?

LP: Employers should know that they will not go wrong hiring a person with Down syndrome. Not only will they be helping someone reach their goal of working, but they and other employees will learn so much about acceptance and love. Everyone I know with DS works hard and gives 100 percent of themselves. We're all more alike than different!

PS: What are some misconceptions about people with disabilities in any type of workforce?

LP: I don't really know, but I guess maybe they think we can't do the job, or that it will take too much time to help us learn, but that just isn't true. When I was on Glee, I always knew my lines and everyone else's, too! I never held up filming because I wasn't ready. I worked very hard and was always on time.

PS: What's your favorite part about your job?

LP: I love being part of a cast and crew on set. I love acting, and even learning my lines. And of course, craft service isn't too bad either!

PS: What's your dream acting role?

LP: I love any kinds of acting roles. I'm really good at comedy, but I would also really like to do a dramatic role, but really I love everything. My dream role would be one that wasn't just for someone with Down syndrome, but a really good, strong role for a young woman who is just a good actor.

PS: What's the best career advice you've ever gotten?

LP: Jane Lynch who played Sue Sylvester on Glee once told me in the very beginning of filming when I was still scared: "I know you're new to this, but everything is OK. I'll be here if you want me to help you go over your lines, or just be your friend. You will be awesome." She was always there for me and helped me grow as an actor.

PS: You've had some really awesome roles in your career so far! What's been your favorite and why?

LP: Of Course, I would have to say Becky on Glee. That was so fun and in the six years I was on the show, they let me do some really fun things. There were some scary and dramatic things, too, like when Becky brought a gun to school. But also some really fun ones, like "The Rocky Horror Glee Show" episode, being Lady Gaga and Max the dog from Dr. Seuss' The Grinch, the secret service for Sue, and of course, Helen Mirren doing my voice over (are you kidding me!!!). It was so much fun, and I loved the cast and crew and Ryan, Ian, Brad, and Dante. I didn't want it to ever end!

PS: Who is your favorite actor/actress you've ever worked with? Why?

LP: I love, love, love Jane Lynch. She's so awesome and was always there for me. One of my favorite actors is John Stamos because he's so cute and hot and I LOVED him on Full House and Fuller House. When we worked together on Glee, they called me "Mrs. Stamos" on set because I had a huge crush on him, which was so funny.

PS: What's your advice for how directors/producers/casting directors can make the entertainment industry more diverse and inclusive?

LP: I always say, think outside of the box (my mom taught me that) and give us a chance. You will not be disappointed. I want to be seen as an actress first, then as a really good actress who happens to have Down syndrome. But just because you have DS or some other different ability, that doesn't make you a good actor, you have to work hard and prove you can do it. I just want to be seen as the best actor for the role because I've shown I have what it takes.

PS: Have you seen any changes over the years in how inclusive the entertainment industry has become for people with disabilities?

LP: That's a hard question for me, but I think shows like Glee have made a difference. I still think we need to have more chances, though, and there is still a lot of work to do.

PS: What do you feel is a common misconception people may have about people with disabilities? What do you want to say to people with those misconceptions?

LP: I think people think that we are different with different feelings, but we are WAY more alike than different. I want what everyone wants: to be accepted for me, to have friends, to love someone, and have someone love me, to live independently, to work at my career, to have family and friends around me, and to enjoy living my life.

PS: Who are your biggest role models? Why?

LP: My biggest role model is my mom because she's my number one fan. She's been an awesome and amazing mom, and she's my true friend and my true inspiration.

PS: What projects are you working on now?

LP: I've had a couple of auditions, which sadly I didn't get the roles, but right now I'm waiting for more work. I'm still speaking around the country to tell my story and fight against bullying. I'm waiting for that next great role, and I hope it's coming soon, because I'm SO ready!

This Service Dog Got His Yearbook Picture Taken, and Yep, That's Definitely a Good Boy

Jillian Engel, a photographer from Louisiana, did the internet a serious solid while shooting school photos on Oct. 3. In a tweet that recently went viral, she shared some behind-the-scenes pictures of a service dog getting his photo taken, and we are eternally grateful.

"I'm a school photographer and we got to take a service dog's picture for the yearbook today," she wrote in her Twitter caption. And as expected, everyone agreed she was doing the Lord's work. So far, the post has racked up more than 1 million favorites and 317,000 comments because obviously we could all use more dogs in our lives.

Zodiac Signs That Make the Best Pet Owners, Ranked From Best to Worst

Owning a pet is one of the greatest things in the entire world. Depending on what kind of pet you get, they're usually fun, funny, and cuddly. But the best part? They love you unconditionally, no matter what. But while some people seem to be total naturals when it comes to having animals in their home, others have to get used to it and work hard at forming a bond. No pet owner looks the same, and the way we love and care for our pets can also vary.

If you're into astrology and zodiac signs, then you know how eerily accurate they can be. They can predict things when it comes to your career, money situation, love life, and home life, which means they can pretty much nail what kind of pet owner you are. Keep reading to see zodiac signs as pet owners, ranked from best to worst.

  1. Taurus (April 20-May 20) - This sign is known for being practical, which is a perfect trait for a pet owner who will do their share of research before adopting. Too often pets are adopted and returned to shelters or rehomed because the owner didn't realize the amount of work it takes. A Taurus will make sure the pet is the right fit. Not to mention, Taurus individuals are loyal and dependable . . . kind of like a Golden Retriever! And who better to care for a pet than someone who shares their characteristics?
  2. Aries (March 21-April 19) - The Aries pet owner is always on the move with an abundance of energy - just like a puppy! Having the ability to match a pet's energy level is key, and this sign does it well. This sign also loves adventure and trying new things, so they'll always be willing to bring their pet to a new park or buy them a fun new treat.
  3. Cancer (June 21-July 22) - This sign tends to be very emotional. A Cancer loves having a pet around to share some snuggles (or even a good cry) with and would be very in tune to the needs of their pet. They are extremely loving and intuitive, so they'll shower their pet with affection and always be on the lookout for signals about what they need.
  4. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) - Capricorns are practical and ambitious, as well as patient and disciplined. As a pet owner, you need to be sure you keep to a schedule to ensure both you and the pet are being taken care of. Capricorns are also great at training pets, because they have the discipline and patience needed to keep trying.
  5. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) - This sign is known for being fiery and intense and is also said to be a bit psychic. A Scorpio may be able to sense the pet's personality style well and even feel like they can "communicate" with animals. Scorpios are passionate and give everything they have to whatever they set their mind to, whether it's training a talking parrot or trying agility courses with a dog. But they shouldn't let that strong personality allow them to hold grudges if their pet does something wrong.
  6. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) - Faithful, loving, and warmhearted are the biggest traits of a Leo. Treating a pet like a family member is easy for this fire sign. They have an abundance of energy, which makes them great at paying attention to a needy pet, but they still sometimes love to put themselves first. They should remind themselves that their animal's needs should sometimes come before their own.
  7. Gemini (May 21-June 20) - While a Gemini can be nervous or tense, they also are very adaptable and versatile. Being able to adapt to your pet's needs, like when they're sick, is key, but pets can also sense nerves and tension, which may make them have the same feelings, and no one wants a nervous pet.
  8. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) - Libras get along with everyone and are very social, so you can always count on them for a good time. These traits make for a great pet owner, as it's always easy to make a friend at a dog park! The big concern with a Libra pet owner is making sure their social calendar allows for time to run home between work and happy hour to take care of the pet.
  9. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) - This sign is friendly, honest, and loyal - all good traits to have as a pet owner. This sign's downfall, however, is being unemotional and detached, which may lead to a lack of bonding with a pet.
  10. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) - Virgos are known for their practicality, cleanliness, and need to stay away from chaos. Being a clean-freak doesn't really work when you have an animal in the house since some pets shed, traipse mud through the house, or cough up fur balls on the couch. A Virgo pet owner will be loyal and can create a deep bond, but there are few pets that a Virgo won't be too critical of.
  11. Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) - Pisces can be a little uncommunicative and all over the map when it comes to feelings. Not even a pet wants to deal with an emotional wreck.
  12. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) - Having a pet is a huge responsibility, and this sign is known for being a little irresponsible sometimes. A Sagittarius pet owner loves their freedom, and since pets can't take care of themselves, this sign might want to hold off on getting one.

The Philogynist Pledge - 10 Ways Men Can Support the Women's Movement

The following post was originally published on Medium.

phi·log·y·nist (fəˈläjənəst) A Philogynist is a person who is fond of, or admires women. Philogyny is the antonym of misogyny.

I believe that in order for the women's movement to be effective, a corollary men's movement must be present. I take this pledge as a way to state my conscious support in moving forward to change a broken system.

1. I Will Lead by Example in the Way I Talk About Women

I know that my children and friends pick up on the generalizations I make about women, whether positive or negative. Intentionally or not, I shape their identity about what it is to be a woman, and how to expect to be treated for being one.

2. I Will Not Accept Traditional Role Models

I believe that a true partnership between the sexes demands a different concept of marriage, an equitable sharing of the responsibilities of home and children, and economic support of the family.

3. I Will Raise My Children to Believe in Gender Equality

I will encourage children to embrace their individual interests and passions, regardless of their gender. The things they can't do will become obvious on their own, and the rest will become possible if they are allowed to dream and have role models.

4. I Will Not Stand For Violence Against a Woman

If a relative, friend, classmate, or teammate is abusive to women, I will not look the other way. I will try to talk to him about it, urge him to seek help, or consult a friend, a parent, or counselor.

5. I Will Mentor Women and Offer Equal Access

If I am in a position to help, I will find at least one woman (and ideally, several) to mentor. Give her thoughtful input on how she can advance and put her name forward for challenging assignments and promotions.

6. I Will Call Out Qualities Other Than Physical Beauty

I will remind her that it is not only appearance that matters. I will focus on positive things about women without pedastalizing. I won't pretend that her looks will never matter, but I will encourage her not to judge herself or let herself be judged only on looks.

7. I Will Make Sure There Is Always Clear Consent

I will be aware of the implicit power dynamic that are often present in sexual relationships between men and women. I am aware that consent is clear, unambiguous, and involves the word yes. It is not the absence of a no.

8. I Will Not Support Politicians Who Marginalize Women

I will not support politicians at any level of government who betray or ignore the principle idea of equal rights and opportunities for all sexes.

9. I Will Learn About the History of the Women's March

I will learn about the history of the women's movement so I can educate youth on what the women of history have done, and how their sacrifices made possible the rights and freedoms we enjoy today.

10. I Will Accept Discomfort

I understand that changing a broken system takes work, and it won't always feel good. Conversations about sexism, racism, transphobia, privilege, cultural appropriation, and other social issues are all related. I will accept discomfort as an important sign that we are making progress and we still have a lot to learn.

This Viral Song Perfectly Explains How No, President Trump, It's Not a "Scary Time" For Men

Amid the sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, Donald Trump said it is a "very scary time for young men in America." Oh? Days later, an acoustic song inspired by the president's comment, titled "A Scary Time," is going viral, with over 500,000 views on YouTube.

"I can't open up my windows when I'm home alone, I can't go to a bar without a chaperone, and I can't wear a miniskirt if it's the only one I own," says dancer and singer Lynzy Lab in what is now becoming a feminist anthem. Lab continues, "But it sure is a scary time for boys . . . it's really tough when your reputation's on the line and any woman you've assaulted could turn up anytime."

Following the song's rapid internet success, Lab expressed her gratitude on Twitter and clarified that the song is not an attempt to "delegitimize men's struggles." She added, "I'm just hoping that we can finally start legitimizing women's." Listen to the timely and cathartic song in its entirety above.

I Always Wanted a Tattoo, but Now I'm Getting Mine Removed

It's a strange feeling to get a tattoo and realize immediately that you hate it. I got my tattoo two weeks after I graduated from college. In retrospect, it was so clearly a bad idea. I came up with the design a few months earlier: while I knew I wanted an infinity sign, I never actually found a drawing of what I wanted it to look like. I just walked into a tattoo parlor on the beach, paid the man, and walked out 45 minutes later with what I can only describe as a serpent-like infinity sign on my wrist. I don't even have any photos of the original version to share.

I tried for months to convince myself and others that I liked my tattoo. I even got it touched up at a much nicer shop with the hopes that a slight variation on the design would fix the problem. After three years of hiding it with a watch, I decided that the only option that would make me happy was to get it removed.

Think Kombucha Is Only Good For Drinking? We're Spilling the Skincare Tea

If 2017 was the year of turmeric latte, then 2018 is the year of kombucha. The once-hard-to-find fermented tea drink is now everywhere from health stores to restaurants.

So, what is it? It's simple: kombucha is a fermented tea that contains living probiotic bacteria. Drinking it is thought to help improve gut health by balancing the microbiome, which is the collection of natural microorganisms that live inside our bodies, explained dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD. "When there is an overgrowth of unhealthy bacteria, it can promote inflammation of the bowels," he said. "By restoring a healthy gut, you can reduce inflammation throughout the body, including the skin."

It's worth noting that the usage and overall benefits of kombucha in skincare products tends to be a little different than that of drink form. "Because of preservatives needed to maintain the shelf life of skincare products, there will not be any live bacteria in these products," Dr. Zeichner said. "However, they may contain bacterial extracts that can help promote a healthy skin microbiome, which is useful in treating a variety of skin conditions including eczema, acne, and even aging skin."

So go ahead, sip the tea - and check out these kombucha–infused beauty products.

Kylie Jenner's Lip Fillers Are Back, 3 Months After Getting Them Dissolved

It seems Kylie Jenner's hiatus from lip fillers is officially over. Just three months ago, the 21-year-old shocked fans when she announced on her Instagram that she'd gotten rid of all her infamous lip fillers. After all, they are partly the reason she's earned a cool $630 million through her successful cosmetics company. However, it looks like the no-filler look might just not be for her.

"I prefer lips that are the perfect complement to ones natural facial features," Pawnta - the registered nurse who did Jenner's injections - told POPSUGAR. "My goal for Kylie was to create a natural lip shape aesthetically pleasing with [something] a little extra. It's all about the placement of the injectable filler, and not the amount of filler."

Speaking to her 116 million followers, Jenner thanked a Beverly Hills-based clinic on her Instagram stories for "coming through late last night with a lip touch up!" This isn't the first she's spoken about her lips recently. Back in August, as a fan asked her "when's the vlog coming?" on Twitter, she explained that it would be based on her "whole lip filler journey," hoping it "comes out soon."

Whatever Jenner chooses, it's what makes someone most comfortable with themselves that matters, and we're glad to see she's being transparent with her followers.

The Pricey Antiaging Products That are Worth Every Penny, According to the Pros

Compare a Bentley to what you can buy at Toyota and you've got. . . a good car salesman. With skincare products, though, pricey doesn't always mean better, and most dermatologists know that the average person doesn't want to spend $750 for a face cream. (Even if it does rev their engines.)

Instead, they save those recommendations for the truly splurge-worthy - the antiagers with ingredients that are scientifically proven to tighten, tone, and all but turn back time. The pro-approved picks ahead may not give you the skin of a toddler, but they'll get you pretty damn close. Besides, everyone knows toddlers can't drive.

Here's How You Can Win a Lifetime Supply of Hair Products - and $10,000

First you could create your own potato chip with the Lay's Do Us a Flavor contest, and then you could pick the next scent of Lip Smacker balm. Now, you can dream up your perfect haircare product with an exciting new contest from It's a 10 - and win big, too.

The brand is asking the public to invent their own dream hair product for a chance to get it made into the real thing. It's a 10 founder Carolyn Aronson told POPSUGAR that she will choose 10 finalists some time in December and a winner in January.

Not only will the winner get their idea made into a real It's a 10 product, but they'll also receive $10,000 and a lifetime supply of It's a 10 products. The winner will receive a few items each month, as well as try out the latest products from the brand.

To enter the contest, you can go to its website and submit your idea through Nov. 16. On Oct. 10, the brand will also be giving out 100,000 free Miracle Leave-Ins in 30 cities across the US, so be sure to pick up your own.

Dua Lipa's Blonde Alter Ego Is Called Electra - and She Was "Back but Better" at the AMAs

Dua Lipa is back to blond . . . well, for now at least. The 23-year-old singer previously transformed her hair into a platinum bob - a stark contrast from her usual sleek brown hair - for the music video for her single with Silk City, "Electricity." Lipa ended up debuting a vibrant version of the look to perform the song, as well as "One Kiss," during the 2018 American Music Awards.

"Excited for tomorrow as we're bringing electricity back but better," she wrote on Instagram the day of the award show. "We'll just call her electra." Though she wore her natural hair on the red carpet, Lipa slipped on an ombré platinum wig with turquoise ends for her performance. It was an electrifying wig, indeed!

This Family Lives in a Decked-Out Van, and Just Wait Till You See the Kitchen!

When Tracy and Mike Kuhl, a couple from Alberta, Canada, started to get the travel bug two years ago, they knew that they'd have to get creative if they wanted to raise their teenage daughter, Sarah, and tween boys, Josiah and Samuel, on the road. But rather than chalking their idea up to an out-of-reach dream, the pair brought their tiny house living aspirations to life courtesy of some outside-of-the-box thinking and a refurbished sprinter. Thankfully, they documented their entire journey on Instagram, and we're insanely jealous.

"At the start of 2016 we found ourselves wanting something more, something different," Tracy told POPSUGAR. "We were living the Alberta oilfield dream but found ourselves missing something. We packed up our lives and a seven-bedroom home and set out for adventure in a truck and 37-foot trailer."

Although Tracy and her family loved traveling in a spacious trailer at first, she realized they needed to downsize even more after facing a few challenges while road-tripping. "Our nearly 60-foot rig was a luxury, however, it was entirely too limiting. Highway tolls, campgrounds fees, fuel costs, and city's prices quickly added up."

"We packed up our lives and a seven-bedroom home and set out for adventure."

In early 2017 while working in Canada, Tracy and her husband started throwing the idea of a sprinter around for a number of reasons: adults could stand up in it, and the cost of gas was more manageable. It was also easy to transport and a much more pragmatic choice for off-the-grid living.

All that was left to do was purchase a 3500 CAN model and get to work refurbishing it, which took much longer and was much harder than the Kuhls anticipated.

"There were bits and pieces that we pulled from Pinterest, Instagram, and YouTube, but in the end we really had to forge our own path," explained Tracy. "There's endless content for couples in vans as well as families with smaller children, but we found very little for older children."

Scroll through to get a look at all of the Kuhl family's adventures so far, and try not to get insanely jealous in the process.

I Quit Being a Stay-at-Home Mom, Because I Need More Than My Children

Once I finally settled into motherhood after a very bumpy start, I became the joyous mother I always thought I would be. Yes, there was (and will always be) very hard days, but once I gained confidence in my abilities as a parent, things started to get fun. I acted silly with my son because I couldn't wait to hear the best sound in the world: his belly laugh. I started rushing home from work to be with him. And I started to cherish all the little moments I knew would fly by if I wasn't paying close enough attention. But after having a second baby, I decided to be a stay-at-home mom for a while. And soon, that pure and complete joy that my children brought me started to dwindle.

Not only did I do it for myself, but I also [did it for my children]. I wanted to be happy for them and with them.

While the happiness they brought me never wavered, it was how much of my life that became that changed. Still, I did my best to be a content stay-at-home mom. I turned to Pinterest for fun crafts to do with the kids, joined mom groups, took my kids to the local library for story time, and more. I tried desperately to tailor myself to what I thought should be my main focus: staying at home. I even contemplated having more kids to stay rooted in my decision.

But something was off. I buried myself in my role as a mom so much that the real me - the other equally important parts of me - rarely came out. While there's absolutely nothing wrong with being a stay-at-home mom, in my heart, I knew that it just wasn't going to totally fulfill me. I needed more, and it was a tough truth to admit. "As a woman, shouldn't this be ingrained in me?" I thought. "Shouldn't all women want to be with their children all day?" The guilt tortured me for a long time.

But eventually, I chose to bring myself back up to the surface. Not only did I do it for myself, but I also didn't want my children to remember their mother wearing a frown instead of a smile. I wanted to be happy for them and with them, and I knew that by making myself and my dreams a priority again, I would be a better mother. So I went back to graduate school, work part-time as a tutor, and freelance as well. Today, my work fulfills me right along with my children, and I couldn't be happier with my decision.

Being a stay-at-home mom is such a hard job, and I just wasn't cut out for it. Every woman and mother is different, as are our needs and what makes us feel fulfilled. I needed work, and that doesn't mean I'm any less of a mother. You have to stay true to yourself and listen to your gut. It's OK if you pour all of yourself into your children. And it's OK if you don't.

Moms, you need to choose happiness - your happiness - whatever role works for you and for your family. Motherhood can make our new identity tricky, but always remember to think of yourself, too. You want your children to remember you with a smile on your face, whether they see it all day long or after you get home from work.

Why I Want My Son to Interrupt You

"I. Sky. Look. Elephant. Elephant. Elephant," Charlie hits on his speaking device, the thing that looks just like an iPad.

Despite myself, I actually look at the sky. There is no elephant. Of course there isn't. Charlie snorts, and I hold his hands between mine before he can hit repeat. It's his favorite thing to do - fool me into thinking he's communicating, when really he's just playing. His best game? Hitting a million nonsensical buttons in a row to make his speaking device sound like it's hyperventilating.

"Charlie, I know you're being silly, but can you use your voice for me? Can you tell me about school?"

By the time Charlie grows up and leaves the nest, I want him so savvy on this speaking device that it's like watching a young Steve Jobs, maestro at the keys.

It's four o'clock in the afternoon and he's just had a full day of kindergarten, and I know the last thing he wants to do is more work. But I really do want to know how reading and PE went. Did he get out of his wheelchair at all? Did he interact with his friends? With my younger two kids, I take for granted their daily recitation of preschool - he ate a booger at lunch; she swung on the big kid swing all by herself; they both skipped naps. But with Charlie, each nugget of information is precious. His cerebral palsy limits his language to a handful of signs, gestures, and words. This speaking device is all about expanding that. I would rejoice if he told me he ate a booger.

We're working on the device now, so early in life, because I want him to be as independent as possible down the road - and having a voice is a giant part of that. He understands everything, can read, do math, and navigate an iPad like an old-school hacker, but no one is going to know these things if he can't find the words to tell them. The working world is not going to be swinging open its doors at his approach if he can't prove himself. I understand what he needs and wants without him having to say a word, but that's a mom thing, not a boss thing.

By the time Charlie grows up and leaves the nest, I want him so savvy on this speaking device that it's like watching a young Steve Jobs, maestro at the keys. I want the words to come so smoothly that you forget it's a voice on a screen. I want him to interrupt you. Yes, I do. I want his colleagues and supervisors to be unable to ignore his opinion when he offers it. Because this kid always has an opinion, and he deserves to be heard. The key is to find out how to best let it out.

And so, on this rainy, Fall afternoon, we sit together on the couch sharing a Costco package of Goldfish and talking about elephants in the sky. It turns out he had checked out a Disney Dumbo book from the library. Perhaps we are farther along than I thought.

The Palace Responded to Keira Knightley Slamming Kate Middleton's Births - and It's Good

Three times in the last five years, Kate Middleton has stepped out onto St. Mary's hospital steps just hours after giving birth, holding a newborn baby while wearing a gorgeous dress and heels, with her hair and makeup done. It's definitely not the norm for new moms to roll out of the hospital in this manner, but for Kate, a royal, it's tradition - however, Kate doesn't engage in this tradition without having things her own way. Although Princess Diana chose to cloak her postbaby body in loose dresses after her two births, Kate chose dresses that highlighted her postpartum belly just so and totally owned it.

And then Keira Knightley tried to make her an example of the societal expectations on women who give birth.

In an essay titled "The Weaker Sex," Keira outlined her birth experience with her now-3-year-old daughter, Edie, and noted the expectations put on famous women to be ready to make pristine on-camera appearances immediately after birth.

"We stand and watch the TV screen," Keira recalled of the day Kate gave birth to Princess Charlotte in 2015. "She [Middleton] was out of hospital seven hours later with her face made up and high heels on. The face the world wants to see. Hide. Hide our pain, our bodies splitting, our breasts leaking, our hormones raging. Look beautiful. Look stylish, don't show your battleground, Kate. Seven hours after your fight with life and death, seven hours after your body breaks open, and bloody, screaming life comes out. Don't show. Don't tell. Stand there with your girl and be shot by a pack of male photographers."

"Keira is obviously entitled to her own opinion, but it was very much based on her own experiences and not of Kate's. Not every mother feels the same way."

Despite the threads of truth sewn into Keira's essay based on her personal experiences, Kate didn't necessarily feel that Keira's words represented her experience accurately.

"Keira is obviously entitled to her own opinion, but it was very much based on her own experiences and not of Kate's. Not every mother feels the same way. Keira's comments were simply for attention and they weren't justified," a palace source told Us. Adding, of the photos taken of her outside the Lido Wing after all three of her births, "She wouldn't have done the photo call a second and third time if she was uncomfortable."

Although it's true that we still have a ways to go as a society when it comes to accepting real and raw birth experiences and what new moms go through before, during, and after having a baby, every mom has a different experience and shouldn't be put down for the choices she makes at any step - whether that's choosing to sport heels and a blowout seven hours after birth or not.

Hate Halloween? 10 Just-as-Fun Things to Do Instead of Trick-or-Treating

I can't pinpoint exactly when I started to dislike Halloween, but the older I've gotten, the more deeply I loathe the so-called holiday. Between macabre-themed parties, skimpy costumes, and strangers constantly knocking on my door, I'm pretty much over it. I did think that once I had children of my own, I'd start to appreciate it again - the way I did when I was young and trick-or-treating in my mom's handmade costumes - but instead, I find myself trying to convince my husband that our kids won't miss it (he strongly disagrees).

If you are like me and say "boohoo" to Halloween every year instead of just "boo," there's definitely no reason you and your family have to hide out in a dark house as hordes of children in search of processed sugar invade your neighborhood. You can still get out and have a lot of fun - it just won't revolve around death, monsters, or candy. Here are 10 things you can do instead of trick-or-treating this year to enjoy the day in your own way.

Every Alien Fan Will Lose Their Sh*t Looking Through These Scary Maternity Photos

Todd and Nicole Cameron, a couple from British Columbia, Canada, wanted to make a big splash to celebrate their pregnancy. And while they don't deny that there's something sweet about doing a heartfelt maternity shoot, the pair decided to go the opposite direction with a scary movie-inspired theme, and the pictures have some serious Alien vibes.

"I found the alien chestburster model at a garage sale this Summer," Todd told POPSUGAR. "As I was putting it together and painting it, the idea of this shoot came to me. I talked to Nicole, and she wasn't keen on a regular maternity shoot, so we decided that this would be a fun way to spread some laughs."

"Hopefully, the baby is human!"

The soon-to-be father of two explained that he and his wife really wanted to capitalize on Nicole's mid-October due date. "If you're going to do a Fall Halloween-themed horror maternity shoot, what better place than a pumpkin patch? Luckily, there is an awesome local pumpkin patch/corn maze that was all too helpful."

And naturally, everyone who caught a glimpse of the photos couldn't stop talking about how insanely creative they were. "Our family was over the moon excited," explained Todd, and the couple's photographer, Li Carter, immediately agreed to do the shoot upon hearing the idea. "She loved it! She has done a number of fun photo projects with us, and we make a great team," said Todd. "So she jumped at the opportunity."

Nicole and Todd wanted to be surprised with the baby's sex, however. "We have decided to wait to find out," said Todd. "Hopefully, the baby is human!"

Read through to get a peek at some of this truly terrifying maternity shoot, and try not to scream in the process.

How 2 Parents Created a Dream Career For Their Son With Autism: "We Had to Think Outside the Box"

Granologist Donna and Dr. Lisa Liberatore.

Luv Michael was a dream that derived from two things: food and love. When Dr. Lisa Liberatore and Dr. Dimitri Kessaris's son Michael, who was diagnosed with autism at age 2, was growing up, they feared he wouldn't be able to have a career that personally and professionally fulfilled him. "[When Michael was in school], I realized that he would be graduating in just four short years," Lisa told POPSUGAR. "I knew we needed to think outside the box [when it came to finding him] meaningful employment." Instead of putting Michael in a job he may not like, Lisa and Dimitri let his passion for cooking lead the way. But because local culinary schools weren't equipped to train someone with autism, she and her husband came up with the idea for Luv Michael.

Luv Michael, which is based in Long Island City, is a food-based company that produces homemade, organic granola. In addition to Michael, the company employs other young adults with autism, offering them culinary, sales, customer service, and life skills training. Their team, whom they've dubbed "granologists," produces 120 pounds of granola each week for local grocery stores and food chains like Fresh&co and also for major companies like Starbucks and JetBlue. And they're just getting started. "Great things can happen when you give something and someone a chance," Lisa explained. To learn more about the amazing company and the strides it's making in disability employment, keep reading.

POPSUGAR: Where did the idea for Luv Michael come from?
Lisa Liberatore: When Michael was 17, I realized that he would be graduating from his school in only four years and there was little being done to give him meaningful employment. Since he showed interest and ability while cooking at home and at church, we thought why not help him learn to be a prep chef. I quickly saw that we needed to think outside the box since traditional culinary schools were not equipped to teach someone with autism. We started in our home and then created the idea of a home business. Granola was chosen since its recipe didn't include using knives, and I wanted to have an ability to include his other friends with autism.

The name Luv Michael references giving a present to someone else, and that's something that needs to be taught to someone with autism, i.e. thinking about others and their feelings.

PS: What was the biggest obstacle in getting it off the ground and getting people to really listen?
LL: The biggest obstacle was having enough time and money while also having a full-time medical practice and raising a son with autism. My husband and I needed to work to help pay for a startup venture, but I also needed to be the one to create this project since I have both the passion and the idea for how to do it differently than other businesses, and I understand autism having raised my son for over 20 years now.

Anyone I present the idea of Luv Michael to gets what it is right away and how wonderful the mission is, but what they don't realize is how much a project like this costs to run, but more importantly, to sustain. Businesses may want to help, but most are interested in the bottom line and profits. We're doing everything that traditional businesses don't, and we also need more support staff and a special education teacher on staff to achieve our goals.

PS: What has the response been like from your employees and their families?
LL: We started with just Michael, my nephew Christian, and another young man who graduated from the same school as Michael, but very quickly parents started to search for opportunities for their young adult children and saw what Luv Michael was trying to do. We give tours to interested parents and their child every week and see the tears in their eyes when they experience firsthand what we're doing and achieving. The employees, who we call "granologists," are hired after a few weeks of a working interview, and that's always an exciting, goosebumps type of day!

PS: How do you make sure your work environment is inclusive for people with disabilities?
LL: We found that our employees do better in a very structured environment with a lot of visuals and clear direction. We understand their challenges and focus on teaching skills to reduce anxiety and help them focus. There's a spirit of love, understanding, and patience, which everyone at Luv Michael brings to their work.

PS: What is the hiring process like?
LL: First, the interested person takes a tour and spends the day with us. If they like the experience, which so far everyone has, we offer them a volunteer position, which is like a working interview. Over the next several weeks, we both see if it's a good fit. Then one of the granologists presents a chef uniform and a job offer to the unsuspecting volunteer. We also let their parents know so they can witness the special day.

PS: How big of a role does teamwork play in your employees' day-to-day?
LL: We have a small, dedicated team that goes above and beyond each day to think about how to make the work place better, more stimulating, and rewarding for our employees.

PS: What different career growth opportunities do you offer your employees?
LL: Our granologists learn so many skills that we organized it into a five-prong curriculum, including food safety and science, communication and sales, IT and software skills, wellness and soft job skills, and creative arts. Our granologists can work towards passing the NY state food handlers license or become managers with increased pay. They may also transition to other job sites utilizing the skills derived from their Luv Michael employment.

PS: What would you say to other employers who aren't sure about hiring someone with a disability?
LL: Our employees are so dedicated and come to work on time and prepared to work with their uniform pressed and ready. They're proud of having the job and getting paid. They're never distracted by their cell phones at work. They show initiative all the time. For example, one of our granologists, Obi, did a trial run taking the train on his day off to make sure he would be on time for his shift the following day!

PS: How do you think different workforces can be more inclusive when it comes to hiring people with disabilities?
LL: If a business wants to hire someone with a disability, it's important to know what the challenges of that disability are to be able to support it. In the case of autism, it means giving employees clear visual schedules and direction. We also recognize there can be sensitivity to certain sounds and light, which needs attention. It also helps for the employee with a disability to have a peer mentor, preferably someone within the organization.

People with autism are very attentive to details and correctness, and many have incredible endurance as well as artistic talents. They can really thrive in so many areas beside the culinary field, such as woodworking and restoration, other fine arts fields, gardening and landscaping, IT and data work, and even dog walking!

PS: What do you feel is a common misconception people may have about people with disabilities? What do you want to say to people with those misconceptions?
LL: Many people think that people with disabilities can't work or don't care about working, and that is very untrue. Our granologists care about getting a paycheck and their job. They are productive and bring joy to those around them. Many people with disabilities have talent and just need a chance. The right job may take trying some things out to see what works best for that individual.

PS: What's one moment that really stands out to you that proved you're really changing the world for these individuals?
LL: The moment that hit me hardest was recently receiving letters from the parents of our granologists telling me how Luv Michael has changed their lives. I cried while reading them.

PS: What do you want other individuals with disabilities to know about following their dreams?
LL: Individuals with disabilities should ask those around them to help find opportunities like Luv Michael to discover what makes them happy at work. Great things can happen when you give something and someone a chance. You may never know what you're really good at or passionate about until you try!

PS: What advice do you have for other parents who aren't sure where to start when it comes to making sure their kids can have independent lives and fulfilling careers?
LL: Various agencies will allow a child to try different jobs to see what fits best for them. If they're in New York, feel free to contact us at info@Luv Michael.org to see about coming for a day tour. Our plan is to create a replicable model by Fall 2019, and thereby allow other families to have a Luv Michael in their town.

PS: What is your favorite part about your job?
LL: I love seeing a new person getting hired. That is an incredible day for everyone. I also love creating new opportunities within our business as a response to what will make our granologists even more successful and feel rewarded by their job.

I've Spent Days Searching For Kate Middleton's Perfect Fall Dress, and Whoomp, There It Is!

Kate Middleton stepped out for her third official appearance since her maternity leave, and hot damn, she's got a new wardrobe. Just as we suspected, Kate's made it a point to up her style game. After debuting a trendy lavender bag one day prior, Kate worked this plaid Erdem dress with an asymmetrical neckline, pulled off the shoulder on one side and adorned with floral brooches on the other, which did indeed draw attention to her stunning chandelier earrings ($1,220), also by Erdem. A strategic fashion move, no?

As Duchess Kate visited the Victoria & Albert Museum, where she opened the new Photography Centre, she modeled her midi from all angles. There was a lot to see, after all - from the distressed tweed finish to the design's gemstone and pearl buttons, and of course, the cranberry sash, perfectly matching Kate's velvet pumps. If the whole look doesn't just make you utter "Ooh la la!" consider this: Kate might have taken a tip from Meghan Markle when it comes to this ensemble.

Meghan's memorable Theory blazer, which she wore on a visit to Cardiff Castle with Prince Harry, came in a similar colorway and was alike in cut, modestly drawing attention upward. Whether or not Kate did, in fact, admire how successfully Meghan pulled off this silhouette, we are so drawn to her sophisticated new number, we're shopping for one just like it after the jump.

28 Outfit Ideas That'll Make You Believe Midi Dresses Are a Fall Staple

It's a common misconception that you can't wear a dress once Summer is over. A midi dress is one of the most versatile pieces you can wear in the Fall because of its hemline, which usually hits halfway between the knee and ankle. The length makes it a great pick for the transitional season.

Midis are easy to wear at your 9-to-5, for parties with your friends, and on date night. But coming up with inventive outfit ideas can feel tiring and overwhelming, especially when you're just working with one piece. For this reason, we're showing you 28 fresh ways to style your midi dress this Fall. Read on to take a look, and shop some pieces for your rotation ahead.

Blake Lively Wore Reflective Chanel Sunglasses at Disney and Put My Ariel Crown to Shame

Grrrr. Blake Lively just outdid all of my best Disney looks, and I can't compete. How could I possibly? The actress spent time at Disneyland Paris hanging out with Mickey. Did she have decorative ears? Check. Minnie's pink glitter pair, I might add. Did she score points with the mouse himself while posing in front of the castle? Uh-huh. And then Blake did the unthinkable: she got someone to take a photo of her, staring up at Sleeping Beauty's humble abode from reflective Chanel sunglasses. They were round, fabulous, and trimmed with sugar pink crystals that looked like candy! "When you wear two giant mirrors on your eyeballs and happen to look at real life MAGIC," she wrote on Instagram.

Sure, I bring sunglasses to Disney, but they're usually plastic and get stowed away in my fanny pack. They don't do the castle justice when I look up at it. Not to mention, Blake is a fashion girl. My guess is that she consciously wore an iconic French brand at an iconic Parisian location. Karl Lagerfeld would be proud. I'm proud, and I don't even know Blake. What I do know is that I already have an Ariel crown I wear, without fail, every time I step onto Disney property - and it'd look really cool with a shiny new accessory like sunglasses. In fact, Blake's Chanel lenses even remind me of pearls, speaking to my mermaid spirit. I might not be able to re-create such an enchanting moment, but I'm about to buy similarly whimsical shades for my next walk down Main Street. Merci, Blake, merci.

Priyanka Chopra Looked Red Hot in This Monochromatic Outfit, but Her Leather Skirt Stole the Show

Priyanka Chopra's most recent outing in New York City just adds to the mounting pile of evidence that she doesn't have to work very hard to make jaws drop. The Quantico actress stepped out on the streets of Manhattan ahead of her appearance at Tuesday night's Tiffany & Co. Blue Book Collection event wearing a fiery red outfit that could literally stop traffic - especially that wrap skirt.

Priyanka wore a tight-fit, wine-colored leather pencil skirt from Akris ($2,390) that currently has me wondering why I haven't already added a similar style to my Fall wardrobe. She accessorized with a silk blouse, a shiny red handbag, and a pair of snakeskin crisscross pumps. Scroll ahead to see more pics of the bride-to-be's outfit, and to shop similar styles.
