There’s a Video of a Dog Flopping Around in a Teddy Bear Halloween Costume, and Now Nothing Else Matters
When it comes to Halloween, there are a lot of traditions that make the holiday so much fun. Putting together unique group costumes, carving pumpkins, and even indulging in bite-sized chocolates typically top our lists, but nothing really overshadows the joy we get out of dressing up our pets. Those innocent little furballs love their owners dearly, which is what makes succumbing them to Halloween that much more fun. Instagram user Harp + Lola knows this to be true. In a popular Instagram post, Rebecca put her adorable bull dog Poppy in a teddy bear costume and whipped out her phone to document. Like a baby learning to walk, Poppy the puppy looks at Rebecca forlornly before taking her first few clumsy steps. Turn the volume up so you can hear the little feet flopping about. It's magic.

What good is Halloween without the decor? It's like having a dinner party without any alcohol. Sorry, why are we here?
Part of what makes Oct. 31 so much fun is the amount of time we spend prepping for the big day. Almost.
To whet your appetite, we have Pier 1's spooky assortment, and it's better than ever. We found 28 items that are a must-see, from a trio of meditative skeletons to bat-shaped glimmer lights.
1 Mom Put a "Halloween" Spin on Elf on the Shelf, and Kiss Sleep Goodbye
Natasha Hudarovich, a mom with a wicked sense of humor, decided to shake things up this Halloween. In a now-viral Facebook post, she explained how she swapped out her kids' traditional Elf on the Shelf experience with a much more sinister, Halloween-themed idea called "Doll in the Hall," and we're not sure whether we should laugh or cry.
"Instead of an Elf on the Shelf in December, I'm doing a Doll in the Hall in October," wrote Natasha. "Basically, you take a creepy Annabel porcelain doll that your kids already believe is haunted and keep secretly moving it around the house. For an extra festive touch I put the doll right in bed with one of the kids whenever they throw it in the trash. It's Day 3 and they want to move."
Although you definitely need to have certain types of kids to ensure they don't sleep in your bed until the ripe old age of 16 after going through this, Natasha's idea gets bonus points for creativity. As someone who was often pranked by her own parents as a kid, I certainly applaud her.

I Copied Someone Else's Street Style For a Week, and Guess What? I Didn't Love It
Just like you, I can click through street style shots for inspiration all day. But how many women actually challenge themselves to re-create the looks they admire that get photographed on the street at Fashion Week? Could this be an easy task to take on without shopping at all? I had to know.
After NYFW wrapped in September, I browsed through shots of editors, influencers, and models and chose outfits I liked that I could actually picture myself wearing. I stayed away from over-the-top, avant-garde dresses or outerwear that didn't feel like "me" and arrived at six Fall ensembles I could make my own. I didn't try to match up everything perfectly. After all, I was going about this without purchasing new pieces for my closet.
Instead, I took away certain little hacks (like wearing embellished socks with Mary Janes or layering a wrap dress over jeans) and pulled them off my way. Ultimately, I came to two conclusions: the first is that I have so many clothes I never wear! When I saw Farfetch's Yasmin Sewell in her pink blazer, I thought, "Wait, I have a pink blazer too, albeit slightly different in shade, that I haven't worn since 2014!" And I'm sure that if you dared yourself to copy these looks, or any looks for that matter, you'd find yourself reaching for old jackets and skirts you forgot about too.
But I also realized something else: I feel most proud to wear a combination I dreamed up myself. I think it's awesome to find that two different women can take on the same trend in two very different ways, don't get me wrong. But as I stepped out of the house each day, I sort of felt like I was flaunting someone else's great discovery. When people gave me compliments at work - they loved that I paired my graphic-print dress with the aforementioned '80s vintage blazer, for example - I thought to myself, "Uh-huh, that was Yasmin Sewell's idea."
I didn't expect to feel this way, trust me. But this experiment reminded me of the reason I fell in love with fashion in the first place: fashion allows YOU to be the inventor; to be a creator, even if you aren't an artist, per se. I enjoy the process of picking out something I like at the store, trying it on, bringing it home, and welcoming it into my wardrobe to be coordinated with whatever the hell I'm in the mood for. I want to call the shots. When someone tells me they like how I styled my look, I want to feel good about taking all the credit.
That doesn't mean that I didn't have fun trying to emulate the gorgeous ladies ahead, and it also doesn't mean that you won't like to get dressed with a "Pinterest board" of sorts. In fact, sourcing street style might be the perfect way to get ready in the morning for some of you. There is, of course, room to reinterpret what you see and make it work for you. Plus, this tactic is definitely a time saver in the morning when you're staring at your closet and you don't know where to start, I won't deny it.
Let me show you how I went about my daily routine each morning, all starting with one snapshot and the clothes I already owned. My outfits might not be 100 percent original if you want to be matter of fact about it, but at the end of the day, what is fashion if not one big cycle of trends that are refreshed and reinterpreted by us all, season after season, day after day?

Gigi Hadid's Denim Suit Is Sexy, but Her Metallic Shoes Are What's Memorable
Gigi Hadid stepped out for a very important event. She joined major models Ashley Graham, Kendall Jenner, and Paloma Elsesser to speak on Vogue's Forces of Fashion panel about the status of the industry. Gigi walked confidently to and from the interview, working an '80s-inspired denim suit that came complete with a double-breasted blazer and tight-fitting jean shorts.
The leggy outfit made a statement on the street, but as Gigi posed for the cameras, it was her flashy Messika jewels and metallic accessories - a mini Prada bag and Christian Louboutin pumps - that glimmered in the spotlight. Maybe Gigi Hadid just challenged us: when it comes to mastering our denim, can we manage to take things to the next level with silver accents, too? Read on to get inspired, then shop for Gigi's flashy accoutrements if you're feeling up to the task.
Gwyneth Paltrow Just Showed Off a Second Diamond Ring, and It's Beautiful
Gwyneth Paltrow married Brad Falchuk in a private ceremony at their home in the Hamptons. In case you need a refresher, the starlet had everyone thinking that she already got married in an oxblood one-shoulder Giambattista Valli gown during her star-studded bash back in April 2018.
For their actual big day, the adorable couple was surrounded by A-listers like Jerry Seinfeld, Cameron Diaz, and Steven Speilberg. While we're not sure what Gwyn wore, we're pretty sure that if her wedding dress was anything like her wedding band, it's beautiful.
Gwyn and Brad showed off their matching gold wedding bands that were simple and sleek. The couple opted for the minimalist route by choosing thin gold bands. During an event for Goop in London, the actress paired her simple gold band with a second diamond encrusted style instead of her engagement ring. Read on to get a closer look at both of her rings and shop similar versions ahead if you're feeling particularly inspired.

10 Tips to Keep Your Pilea Plants in Their Best Shape
We love a good pilea plant, an on-trend indoor plant that even Joanna Gaines is a fan of. Pilea plants, otherwise known commonly as the Chinese money plant, are beautiful houseplants that are distinguishable by their small, flat leaves that grow in clusters. They love indirect sunlight, and look good up on a shelf or placed as a decoration on a table. They're basically a dream plant.
Although pileas are generally easy to care for, you can still sometimes run into a few hurdles. Christopher Satch, the in-house plant scientist and head of education at The Sill, gave us some expert advice for when these obstacles arise. Read on to learn more!
Pippa Middleton Makes a Dress and Sneakers Look Like Pure Magic, but We Know Her Secret
Pippa Middleton seems to know just the thing to put on for a quick day of shopping. The mama-to-be stepped out for a weekend trip to COS in London, sporting a purple printed drop-waist shirtdress with a pleated skirt. Sure, Pippa has an eye for gorgeous pieces that flatter her figure and draw attention to her new glow, but she also has a secret for making these simple combinations work so well: trusty sneakers.
Pippa's go-to look as of late seems to be a roomy leather tote, functional for all her essentials, one statement midi that's made of something comfortable, and flats. While she could always up the fancy factor with a pair of espadrilles, Pippa's fashion motto could easily be "fuss free FTW." Read on to see what we mean, then shop some similar dresses we found if violet is your color.

These Hilarious Photos of Charlotte and George at Princess Eugenie's Wedding Are So Typical
Being a Royal child at a wedding has got to be hard work; you're constantly on camera and expected, at some level, to be well-behaved, but you're still just a kid with proclivities to make silly faces, learning to walk on your own legs with coordination. And while the kids at Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank's wedding on Oct. 12 were as well-behaved as at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding back in May (thanks to a ton of practice), there were, of course, plenty of moments that can be classified as "peak kid" between Princess Charlotte, Prince George, and the other royal children in attendance.
From Charlotte's classic funny faces to one of the pageboys taking a bit of a spill, we can't stop laughing at these classic kid moments from the Royal Wedding.
28 New and Returning Netflix Shows Everyone Will Be Talking About This October
Fact: Netflix is the gift that keeps on giving. In addition to plenty of new spooky programming - including a series exploring real-life paranormal encounters and a 10-episode thriller that might just become the scariest show on TV - Netflix's new and returning original TV shows for October have us all sorts of excited. With a list that includes the hotly anticipated second installment of Making a Murderer and the Riverdale spinoff, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, here are 28 shows to binge-watch this October.
Princess Eugenie's Wedding Dress Designer Definitely Surprised Us, but Damn, She Chose Well
Since Princess Eugenie announced her engagement to Jack Brooksbank back in January, we've been pondering over what her wedding dress might look like. Just a few weeks before her big day, a few details finally started to emerge, and while the designer did remain a secret until the very last minute, we did learn one thing: the gown would be from a British fashion house.
Eugenie confirmed the news to British Vogue, saying, "I'm not telling anyone who is making it, but I can say it is a British-based designer." During the interview, the princess also explained how her wedding dress was "the one thing that I was really decisive about. As soon as we announced the wedding, I knew the designer, and the look, straight away. I never thought I'd be the one who knew exactly what I like, but I've been pretty on top of it."
And now, we finally have an answer! For the most important dress of her life, Princess Eugenie turned to British Designer Peter Pilotto, and the two worked closely together on the stunning design, which left us completely breathless. Thanks to a beautiful neckline which folded around the shoulders, a full pleated skirt, and a long, flowing train, Eugenie's gown was modern yet feminine. At the bride's request, it also featured a low back, which helped her show off the scar she got after having surgery to correct her scoliosis at the age of 12.
But the detailing didn't stop there, and Eugenie asked Peter Pilotto to include a number of symbols that are meaningful to her on the design: the Thistle for Scotland, which acknowledges the couple's love for Balmoral; a Shamrock for Ireland, which is a nod to the Ferguson family; and the York Rose and ivy, which represent Eugenie and Jack's home.
Read on to see Princess Eugenie's incredible dress in more detail, and then take a closer look at the beautiful tiara she wore on her big day.
Kate Middleton and Prince William Were in High Spirits at Princess Eugenie's Wedding
On Oct. 12, Prince William and Kate Middleton stepped out for a very special occasion: Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank's wedding. Of course, the busy mom of three stunned in a gorgeous magenta ensemble, while William looked dapper in his suit. Inside the church, the couple was spotted showing some supersweet (and super rare) PDA, as they were caught lovingly holding hands in their seats. To see Kate at the ceremony was a nice surprise, as it was previously reported that her attendance would be up in the air; her sister, Pippa Middleton, is set to welcome her first child any day now, and Kate would have missed the wedding to be by her side. Luckily, Pippa showed up at the wedding with her husband, James Matthews, as well!
On top of looking after Prince George and Princess Charlotte, who were more adorable than ever, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also spent some time with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who looked like their usual beautiful selves and didn't shy away from a little bit of PDA. Read on to see more photos of William and Kate supporting Eugenie on her big day.
Celiacs Rejoice: These Halloween Candies Are Gluten-Free
Holidays can be a real drag if you have dietary restrictions, and with Halloween being all about the candy, it can be downright scary. But there's good news for those avoiding gluten: although you'll have to steer clear of homemade mummy-shaped cakes and brownies decorated adorably with spiderwebs, most candy bars and hard candies get the green light - just stay away from Twizzlers, because they surprisingly do contain gluten! Now, we're not saying to go crazy with the candies, but when a majority of "fun size" bars are only 100 calories, a little indulging might be necessary.
First things first. Always read the label on your candy before consuming. Unless labeled "gluten-free," candy may contain traces of gluten, be produced in a facility that also processes products with wheat, or be made on equipment that is shared with products that are not gluten-free. Also note that a product labeled as gluten-free in one country may not be gluten-free where you live.
Companies are constantly changing the ingredients they put in products, so always double check just to be sure. When in doubt, you can call the 1-800 number located on the packaging to speak with a customer service representative to find out for sure if it's free of gluten.
Here's a list of popular candy that is currently gluten-free:
Chocolate
- Almond Joy
- Baby Ruth
- Blow Pops
- Butterfinger (fun size only)
- Charleston Chew
- Dots
- Goobers
- Heath Bar
- Hershey's Milk Chocolate Bar (1.55 oz. only)

If you're wondering about M&M's, Snickers, Twix, 3 Musketeers, Starburst, Skittles, Lifesavers, and Milky Way, the company that makes these products, Mars Wrigley, urges consumers to read the labels directly on the package for allergy information.
Trying Weight Watchers? Here's a Full Week of Meals to Get You Started
When you start a new diet or healthy lifestyle, it can be so hard to figure out exactly what to eat day in and day out. And if you're anything like me, you can also fall into a rut of eating the same thing every day - once I've figured out the nutritional information for a dish, it's easier to keep eating it than to spend time researching something new.
Fortunately, when it comes to Weight Watchers, you can easily use the app to scan the barcode of a package to get the SmartPoints value. There's also the handy rule of thumb that fruits and vegetables are 0 SmartPoints. Over time you'll learn the SmartPoints values of foods you eat again and again and be able to rack up your daily totals in your head. Until then, we've put together a week of meals and snacks to get you started.
Using a daily SmartPoints base of 25, this meal plan includes three meals and a snack for seven days. You can find all the recipes you'll need here, and if your SmartPoints daily base is less or more than 25, there's a little wiggle room each day to add an extra snack or take something out.
Rocketman: Taron Egerton Is Playing Elton John, but Is He Actually Singing?
We've been anxiously awaiting Taron Egerton's foray into musical film as Elton John in Rocketman, and the first question that jumped out when we watched the first trailer is, of course, is Egerton actually singing?
In short, the answer is yes! Egerton does his own singing in Rocketman. He spent a long time recording John's music and trying to get it all right, according to The Hollywood Reporter. John's husband, David Furnish, even told the publication that John told Egerton that whatever he does, he shouldn't try to copy him. "Don't think you have to sing it exactly the way that I sang it. Don't think you have to perform it the way I performed it," Furnish said of John's advice to Egerton.
Egerton also told Collider back in May that he had every intention of always singing on set while filming the movie, and we are hoping he stuck with that and we'll find more out about it at some point. But for the actual movie, full of glitz, glam, and the Rocket Man, we'll have to wait until May 2019 for the release. It's then that we'll finally see Egerton as John, in this film Egerton calls a fantasy musical of John's life as an artistic prodigy.
According to Experts, This Is the Most Effective Way For Women to Lose Belly Fat
When it comes to burning body fat, a lot of women have the same target area: the belly. Much to the chagrin of many of us, belly fat is notoriously stubborn, and it's important to note that you can't spot reduce fat. In other words, simply being diligent about crunches isn't going to help you achieve your goal.
"Just as you can not influence where your body stores dreaded excess fat when it packs it on, you can't control where your metabolism opts to pull from when it taps into fat stores, which incidentally tends not to be from the region we gain it in the first place," Corey Phelps, founder and CEO of Cultivate by Corey and creator of the Cultivate365 program, told POPSUGAR.
That's not to say that we're powerless to reduce belly fat. A combination of diet and exercise can help us achieve this goal in a healthy manner. What types of diet and exercise, you ask? Here's what experts have to say about the nutrition and workout aspects of losing belly fat - and keeping it off.
The Meaning Behind Day of the Dead Sugar Skulls
Día de los Muertos is a colorful celebration to honor death and those who have passed, but when people ask me to explain the history behind this date, what exactly it entails, and why we remember the dead for a day or two (Nov. 1 and 2) or even an entire week, it gets tricky. There isn't one definition or way of observing Day of the Dead; it all depends on where you're from (what state in Mexico or even country), but I can say that some symbols and traditions run through all festivities.
Take, for example, skulls and skeletons. If there is one thing everyone probably knows about Día de los Muertos, it is that these two symbols are a big part of the day, specifically sugar skulls or "calaveritas de azúcar." If you've ever attended a Día de los Muertos event or seen an ofrenda (or altar), then you might have come across a white molded skull with a person's name written on its forehead and a series of sweets and ribbons decorating the rest. And while now you might be picturing yourself eating a delicious treat, these are not sweets you'd eat in Mexico.
There's meaning behind these molds and why they're made out of sugar. It all dates back to the Spanish conquest. While a tradition of honoring the dead already existed in Mexico at the time, the Spaniards brought about new learnings and customs and with that the idea of molding decorations from ingredients easily available. Sugar was accessible to Mexicans at the time, even those with little money, so it was a natural choice. Once they learned that they could make these skull molds with the ingredient and water (that's all it really is), the idea of the sugar skull evolved and grew to be an important symbol of the day.
Today, many different versions of the sugar skull exist. There are not only different sizes, but also coffins and skulls made out of chocolate and almonds (those you can eat!). But the meaning behind the calaverita remains the same.
Going back to the altar, skulls are placed as decorations to recognize the person who has passed. His or her name is written on the sugar skull's forehead and, depending on the age of the deceased, the size of the skull might vary - baby skulls are dedicated to those who passed at a young age and larger skulls are for adults. The colors of the skulls differ, too. Some are covered in ribbons and icing, others are dipped in glitter and decorated with bright adornments like hats and bows. While you'll find a variety of versions, you won't find any that lack color, because color reflects life, and the Day of the Dead celebrates just that.
The symbol is a commemoration of the person you are honoring whether dead or alive. That's why you don't have to wait for someone to pass to offer them a sugar skull; you can give one as a gift on Day of the Dead as a sweet reminder that death is the only thing guaranteed in this life or in the words of my mother "la calavera es un símbolo de la muerte, lo único seguro en la vida."
If You Want to Lose Weight and Keep It Off, Commit to These 10 Habits
You know what to do to lose fat, but the most difficult part of that equation is how to keep it off. Here are 10 expert tips to help you lose weight at a manageable pace, so you can maintain the new, slimmer, stronger you.
Tone Your Legs, Butt, Arms, and Abs - Every Inch! - With This 1 CrossFit Exercise
You're gonna be sore tomorrow. Just set yourself up for that. These wall balls are that intense! Walking might be an issue, because your legs and butt are going to feel a little wobbly. Oh, and your abs - try not to laugh tomorrow. Your arms? Someone else will have to brush your hair.
This standard CrossFit move is a total-body exercise; it will make you strong and build muscle, and it's also a cardio move. Really, it's the complete package! All you need are a soft medicine ball (not a hard slam ball) and a wall or a target on a rig. Start off light, with an six- or eight-pound med ball, and work your way up to a 14- or 20-pound ball.
Wall Ball
- Stand in front of a wall holding your med ball with both hands in front of your chest.
- Squat down low with your hips below your knees. As you straighten your legs, throw the ball up to a specific spot on the wall or a target, about eight to 10 feet from the floor. You want to use the power of your lower body to propel the ball up, coming onto the balls of your feet.
- Keep your arms extended, ready to catch the ball after it bounces off the wall. This counts as one rep.
- Complete three sets of 15 to 20 reps.
When you catch the ball on its way down, absorb its weight into your squat. Try to maintain a graceful, rhythmic movement, although your legs and arms will be on fire and you'll feel like your lungs might explode. You may hate wall balls more than burpees, but there's no denying it's the ultimate exercise for an efficient workout if you're short on time.
I'm a Trainer, and These Are My 15 Favorite Dumbbell Exercises For Building Muscle
What I'm about to tell you is no secret: lifting weights will help you decrease your fat mass and increase your lean muscle mass. There are many ways to build muscle, and the consensus is that lifting weights and incorporating compound exercises - moves that work multiple muscle groups at once - into your routine is the way to go.
As a trainer, I completely agree with this method, and I wanted to share some of my favorite dumbbell exercises with you. Some are specific to muscle groups, like the triceps extension, and others are compound exercises, like the 3-in-1 squat, curl, and press.
This is not a workout - you can find a bunch of them here. Instead, let these exercises inspire your next workout. Select three to five moves and add them into an existing program, or create a new workout with these moves.

Red Lobster Is So Keto-Friendly, You Might Struggle to Pick Just 1 Meal
If you do your research, you can put together a decent keto meal at just about any restaurant . . . including one that's known for its Cheddar Bay Biscuits. Yes, we're talking about Red Lobster, and no, the biscuits aren't keto. (But you can make a pretty delish low-carb biscuit at home.)
You'll have to steer clear of the pasta plates and fried dishes, but if you read the restaurant's nutrition information, you'll find that the menu features quite a few meals that cater to those on the keto diet. From appetizers to steak to (of course!) lobster, we've pulled together five low-carb, high-fat dishes that will fill the void left by those cheesy biscuits.
- Appetizer: If you're simply too hungry to wait for your entrée, start with the Buffalo Chicken Wings. For under five carbs (and almost 50 grams of fat!), you'll get a plate of spicy wings, crunchy celery, and a creamy blue cheese dressing to drench it all in.
- Salad: On its own, the Caesar Salad (minus the croutons, of course) isn't too filling, but when you top it with the Wood-Grilled Salmon, you've got one tasty meal. Stick with the caesar dressing that comes with the dish; it's high in fat and won't add any carbs to your meal.
- Shrimp: If you're in the mood for a heaping platter of shrimp, order the Shrimp Your Way with double Garlic Shrimp Scampi. If you add a double side of Fresh Asparagus, you'll enjoy an entire buttery meal for only 16 grams of carbs.
- Steak: Seafood not your thing? Go for the 7-oz. Sirloin. It's wood-grilled and perfectly seasoned, and it comes with two sides. Skip the Mashed Potatoes and order the Fresh Broccoli and Tomato-Mozzarella Caprese - your meal will still be under 20 grams of carbs.
- Lobster: If you want heads to turn as the server brings food to your table, order the Live Maine Lobster (this is Red Lobster, after all). You'll get a whole steamed lobster, along with two sides. Stick with the sides mentioned above to keep it low-carb, and don't forget the extra butter!
Flatten and Tone Your Belly With These 16 Workouts and Exercises
Belly fat is a trouble spot for lots of women. And it's not just for aesthetic reasons; belly fat, or visceral fat, is the one that surrounds your organs and is the most dangerous for overall health. To get rid of it, many people turn to quick fixes such as juice cleanses and endless crunches. Turns out, getting rid of belly fat is complicated and can't be done with exercise alone.
You can't spot-reduce body fat, so doing a thousand crunches a day won't guarantee that you'll lose the fat from your midsection. Although exercise can help you tone and build muscle, it won't get rid of the fat from a specific body part. To burn fat, you have to lose weight all over by burning more calories than you take in - this is achieved by eating in a calorie deficit and exercising, preferably with HIIT, which burns more calories, targets belly fat, and helps you achieve the afterburn effect.
Luckily, you can rev up calorie burn with certain workouts and tone your ab muscles with specific exercises. Here are some of the best HIIT workouts to torch calories and ab-focused strength moves to help you flatten your belly once and for all.
Jillian Michaels Says Losing Weight and Building Muscle Isn’t About How Often You Work Out, It’s This
Jillian Michaels helped dozens of contestants lose hundreds of pounds and transform their lives as the tough-love trainer on The Biggest Loser, so she knows a thing or two about losing weight and building muscle. Between filming intense workouts for her Instagram page and her fitness app My Fitness by Jillian Michaels, she revealed to us the secret to losing weight and building muscle. Spoiler alert: it's more than just working out.
For fat loss, Jillian recommends lifting weights four times a week: each muscle group twice a week with two days of rest in between. But here's the kicker - she says you need to weight train four days a week to build muscle, too.
"The difference between weight loss and muscle is really about food," she told POPSUGAR. "If you want to lose weight, you have to create a calorie deficit. If you want to gain muscle, you need to have a calorie surplus."
Although Jillian isn't a dietitian, she recommends eating 10 percent more calories than you burn in a day to gain muscle. Registered dietitian and personal trainer Jim White, ACSM, also said to make sure you eat enough protein to put on muscle: 0.5 to 0.8 grams of protein per pound of body weight. So if someone weighs 150 pounds, he or she should be eating 75-120 grams of protein daily to gain muscle.
It's also key to let your muscles recover, especially if you are training so frequently. "While some believe that how you train matters regarding size or muscle gain, the truth of the matter is that it's about stress and recovery," Jillian added. "So as long as you stress the muscle then let it recover you will be achieving your goal, whether you lift heavy or do bodyweight resistance."
Turns out, your strength-training regimen can be the same whether you are trying to lose weight or put on muscle; at the end of the day, it's all about nutrition.
Beyond the Lattes: 30+ Healthy Pumpkin Spice Treats, Snacks, and Foods
Whether you're ready or not, pumpkin spice season is upon us. And if you're a pumpkin fan but also livin' that healthy lifestyle, fear not: there's tons of stuff for you, too.
It's true, though - pumpkin spice flavors aren't just for Oreos and sugary lattes (although we don't mind those now and then!). From protein powders to flax-and-pumpkin-seed granolas to oatmeals and Greek yogurts, it seems like pumpkin spice has invaded some of our healthiest staples and snacks. We're not mad about it. 'Tis the season, right?

According to the Experts, This Is Exactly How to Lose Weight and Keep It Off
If it feels like almost everyone around you is constantly trying to lose weight, you're not imagining things. The Center for Disease Control estimates that 70 percent of Americans are either overweight or obese, and predictions show that number will continue to increase. The reason is that no matter how big the weight-loss industry gets, the amount of people who are successfully able to lose weight (and more importantly, keep it off) is relatively small compared with the number that actually tries.
In an effort to understand the science behind how to effectively lose weight, POPSUGAR spoke with industry expert Dr. Justin Holtzman of the Holtzman Medical Group. "The most effective way to lose weight, and studies have shown this, is that you need to limit your total calories per day," Dr. Holtzman explains. "The most effective way to do this for long-term success is to track everything you eat every day, have a calorie limit, and don't exceed that limit".
Along with using this practice as a way to eat more mindfully, it also offers an excellent way to gauge how much you're really consuming on any given day. "If, for breakfast, you're having one cup of cereal and a half a cup of milk, measure each and write that down in a journal," Dr. Holtzman continues. "The beauty of the world we live in now is that we have apps that measure everything for us. I personally like Weight Watchers to track points for caloric intake, because it steers you toward foods that are less calorie dense. And by steering you toward foods that are less calorie dense, you stay fuller longer. You still have the volume of food, but you're not storing those calories as fat. This leads to long-term success in weight loss."
Rebecca Lee, registered nurse and founder of the natural health resource RemediesForMe.com, also offers excellent food suggestions to help with weight loss. She recommends apple cider vinegar (known to stimulate weight loss), coconut oil (which is a healthy fat that's metabolized differently in your body than other fats), probiotics (to help protect the natural flora in the gastrointestinal tract), water (which helps boost the metabolism), fiber (which adds bulk to food without an increase in calories so you stay full longer), and green tea (when digested, it signals stored body fats to be released into the bloodstream to be used as energy).
POPSUGAR also spoke with Jill McKay, certified personal trainer and founder of Narrow Road Fitness, about her tips for effectively losing weight. She explains that when it comes to diets, it's not one size fits all. McKay encourages people to "set yourself a plan that works for you. Not all plans works for all people - if there was a way to eat healthy, everyone would be doing it!" She also explains that you have to "stick to the boundaries you set for yourself. Remember, you are the ONLY one responsible for your eating (and exercising) habits. Your body is different from others', so your metabolism may be faster or slower than someone else's. You may respond better to a Paleo style of eating, whereas someone else may have more success at a vegan lifestyle." McKay also cautions that you should give yourself a reasonable amount of time to lose weight, saying, "Weight creeps on slowly, but it also takes a long time to lose. Consistency over time is important." It's also important to note that you should always seek medical consultation before starting or drastically changing any diet plans.

This Sports Dietitian Explains Why You Shouldn't Cut Carbs If You Are Trying to Build Muscle
If you're trying to put on muscle, you're probably lifting weights and loading up on protein; protein is the building block of muscle and helps build and repair tissue, so it's essential if you want to see gains. But many people make the mistake of focusing too much on protein and neglecting carbs.
Carbs have been demonized as the macronutrient that will spike your blood sugar, make you store fat, and derail your fitness efforts. In reality, eating carbs can actually help you lose weight. And like protein, it's essential for gaining strength and growing muscle. Jim White, RDN, ACSM, owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios, recommends a high-carbohydrate diet for muscle growth since carbs are the main source of energy that your muscles will use.
"Carbohydrates increase glycogen stores in the body, and thus allow for more intense workouts," he told POPSUGAR. Glycogen is used by your body to fuel exercise, especially high-intensity exercise with moderate-level repetition and resistance.
"During workouts, the body relies and depends on muscle glycogen," he explained. "Thus, having low levels of muscle glycogen, which would arise from a diet that is low in carbohydrates, would negatively affect performance for high-intensity exercise." Especially after you exercise, carbs are important for muscle repair and renewal in a process called "muscle glycogen resynthesis."
So while, yes, it's important to fuel up with protein after a workout, you should also get some carbs in, too. Stumped on what that should be? Check out our list of recovery snacks that provide the perfect amount of protein and carbs to fuel your muscles and help you recover. If you want to build muscle overall, Jim recommends a macro breakdown of 55 percent carbs, 25 percent protein, and 20 percent fat.
Not Sure What to Do at the Gym? Follow Along With This Trainer's Weekly Workout Plan
One of the best ways to have success at the gym, before ever touching a weight, is to have a plan. We've all been there before: you get to the gym and sit around wasting time because you aren't sure what you want to do. In order to help you get into a routine, I've created a weekly workout plan to save time and build muscle.
If you're trying to build muscle, follow this workout plan for four to six weeks. You can also just use this plan to help get you into a routine - definitely reference it on those days when you're just too tired to think.
None of the exercises are set in stone, so if something is too complicated or too easy, please feel free to make the necessary changes. The same thing applies with the weight. I'd rather you make modifications and adjustments when necessary and perform the exercises with proper form, as opposed to performing the exercises incorrectly.
Before every workout, be sure to warm up with dynamic exercises and activate your core and glutes. Don't forget to cool down after every workout.
