Are Antiaging Eye Creams Really Worth the Cash? We Consulted the Pros

I'm going to be entirely honest with you: I used to be the biggest nonbeliever in eye creams or any products that have the word "antiaging" in their name. Eye creams have always reminded me of just thicker - and more expensive - moisturizers, and I thought that I was too young to need antiaging properties in my skin care. However, as I've built up my skincare routine and learned more about options to help keep my skin looking vibrant, I found out that eye creams can be effective in a different way than moisturizers can (provided you find the right one), and antiaging products work better if they're used in a preventative manner.

So as I continue to move forward with finding skincare products that work for me, I keep an eye out for what antiaging products and what eye creams I should be using (even better if I can find one that checks both boxes). I consulted a few expert dermatologists to learn more about what qualities to look for in antiaging eye creams, from important ingredients I should be looking for to when I should start using them. I'm pretty excited to start experimenting with eye creams and finding what really works best for my skin.

I Have Worn the Same $3 Liquid Eyeliner For 10 Years, and It Gets Me So Many Compliments

I'm a girl who likes to wear a sharp, inky-black cat eye on the regular. There's something about it that makes me feel both powerful and glamorous, so I have made it my go-to look since my teenage years. Time after time, friends, coworkers, and strangers have asked me the same question: "What eyeliner do you use?" There's nothing that brings me more joy than smugly telling them it's a $3 pick from the drugstore. Yes, I have been religiously swiping Wet n Wild MegaLiner Liquid Eyeliner on my lids for 10 years now, and I don't plan on stopping any time soon.

Before you become skeptical, know that I have tried my fair share of liquid liners. I am always curious to see if any high-end or drugstore brands can match the quality of my Wet n Wild pick, but they never do. MegaLiner Liquid Eyeliner comes in a small tube with a screw-top handle. The applicator, a flexible spongy brush, is easy to maneuver as I glide it across my skin. The harder you press, the thicker the line becomes, so you have a lot of control over the intensity of your look. The formula itself is smooth and matte. Its raven-black shade makes my blue eyes pop. All it takes is one coat to get a pleasing obsidian-dark effect.

For me, pen-tip applicators and pots with angle brushes don't give me the razor-sharp line I'm looking for. Only MegaLiner provides me with that smooth edge - I won't accept anything less. What can I say, a good cat eye has become a passion. It's time to set down your pricey choice and give my favorite a try. I can confidently promise you that it won't disappoint.

Let's be real, a $3 purchase is not a big risk to take. Even better - it's currently on sale for $2. I keep one in every purse I own. Read on to see close-ups of the liner itself and how it looks once it's applied.

The Metallic Lipsticks That Finally Made Me a Believer in Lipstick

Growing up, I always admired the women who were prepared for every situation. To me, that meant keeping three things in your bag at all times: a piece of dark chocolate, a few hair ties, and at least one lipstick. My mom learned this trick from my grandma, who said the right shade of lipstick can change everything.

A couple of years ago, I decided to adopt this motto. Even if I didn't put on any other makeup, I would be wearing some kind of lip product. But this got harder and harder every single day. Some of my lipsticks would dry on my lips and look horrible by the end of the day; some matte formulas were so hard to get off that I would have to scrub my lips every single night. Just like that, after three months of wearing lipstick daily, I stopped completely.

Then, after a few weeks into my internship at POPSUGAR, my curiosity over the Beauty collection came over me. Of course, I really wanted to try the new Gem Sticks lipsticks, hoping that somehow they would change my mind. I had three shades in my hands: Gosh Garnet, Ruby Rising, and Precious Pink. All of these lipsticks were easy to apply, and they smelled amazing.

You can see what the colors look like, plus my full review, in the slides ahead. Spoiler: I think I finally understand what my grandma was talking about all along.

She recommended doing each move for 30 seconds on each side of the body for three rounds total. Here's Why You Shouldn't Try to "Sweat Out" Your Cold in a Group Fitness Class

You've probably heard that "sweating out a cold" will relieve your unpleasant symptoms and help you feel better. Or maybe you are so excited for your group fitness class, you can't possibly cancel, even if you're not feeling well.

If you're considering showing up to a workout class while sniffling, sneezing, and fighting off a headache, you should reconsider - we spoke to some experts to find out whether or not it's a good idea to hit a boutique fitness class if you're feeling under the weather.

How Contagious Are You When You Have a Cold?

The symptoms of a cold may vary person to person, but the most common ones are runny nose, sneezing, congestion, and a headache. With all that phlegm and snot dripping out of your body, you're bound to spread your sick germs to other people.

"You are most contagious to others the first few days of your symptoms, and even the day before, but there is little you can do about that," internist Arielle Levitan, MD, told POPSUGAR. She explained that cold germs are most contagious via touching infected secretions, such as mucous and saliva, but not so much with tears and sweat. Colds are also somewhat contagious with germs in the air like from sneezing and coughing.

Edo Paz, MD, a doctor with the free primary care app K Health, echoed that the cold and flu, which are caused by viruses, are extremely contagious. "You should minimize proximity to other people while you have a cold, and if you absolutely must be around others, be sure to contain your germs by coughing into your elbows, washing your hands frequently, and throwing away your used tissues," he said.

Can You Work Out When You're Feeling Sick?

Even if you're feeling under the weather, you may feel like you're well enough to exercise. Kenton Fibel, MD, family medicine physician at the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles, said that the above-the-neck/below-the-neck rule is a helpful guide as to whether or not you should work out with a cold.

"Typically, above-the-neck symptoms like sore throat, runny nose, or congestion are OK to work out with, but below-the-neck symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, or muscle aches should be a sign that you should let your body rest and recover. If you have a fever, you should also try to avoid significant exercise."

So while you can work out if you have above-the-neck symptoms, you shouldn't go too hard; Dr. Fibel said if you work out too hard when you're sick, it can make it more difficult for your body to fight off infection and will take you longer to get better.

So, Should You Go to a Group Fitness Class With a Cold?

"As a doctor of internal medicine I would say that you can work out if you feel up to it," Dr. Levitan said. Dr. Fibel also said that overall exercise does improve your immune system. However, just because you can work out doesn't mean you should go to a gym or boutique fitness class, and potentially get other people sick.

"Every cold and flu season, I see people coming to the gym," NASM-certified personal trainer Allan Misner told POPSUGAR. "It is disturbing to see them hacking, coughing, and sneezing while they're using the treadmills, ellipticals, and other machines." Not to mention group fitness classes where you are using shared equipment and in such a small space with potentially dozens of other people. Instead, Allan encourages people to work out at home if they have a cold, maybe with a bodyweight workout or home cardio equipment.

In fact, family and emergency medicine doctor Janette Nesheiwat, MD, recommends not working out at all when you are feeling sick. "Let your body heal," she told POPSUGAR.

"You can make yourself more sick; a cold can turn into a pneumonia and you can pick up more bugs when you are ill," Dr. Nesheiwat explained. "If you are exercising in a group setting, you are likely contaminating the gym equipment and your fellow gym-goers." She recommends staying home to recover and drinking lots of fluids, including hot tea, taking zinc, and resting.

Sounds like you're better off waiting until you feel at 100 percent to get back into the gym. After all, who needs an excuse to stay home and watch Netflix?

6 Ways I Benefited From Turning Off My Phone For Just 1 Week

I've had a cell phone since I was 11. I know - let that sink in for a second. Post 9/11, my parents wanted to make sure my brother and I had a way to get in touch with them in case of emergencies, so for the past decade and a half, I've had a phone essentially super glued to my left hand. In essence, I've been conditioned.

This past year, I hit my threshold of feeling overwhelmed. I was so tuned into everything around me and around the world 24/7, responding to everyone within seconds, constantly available . . . that I forgot to tune into what I needed. As such, stress levels contributed to atrocious mental health, chronic illness, and a destroyed immune system.

I needed to do a hard reset, and not on my phone - on my life.

The reset started with clearing my calendar, finding a place to chill out and rest, and then digitally detoxing. Phase one: move apps like Instagram to new folders on my phone and put new apps in their former places to see how often I was mindlessly opening them. Phase two: delete social media apps temporarily. Phase three: no tech for one week. GASP! I know. Here's what went down. (Note: this also went down on a week I was not at work - truly tech-free!)

Massy Arias's Lower-Body Strength Workout Is Legit, and Her "Baby Weight" Is Adorable

For today's daily reminder about how amazing women are, we bring you Massy Arias, Instagram influencer and celebrity trainer. Over the years, Massy has inspired thousands, teaching people all about nutrition and strength training. Her workouts are designed to help you get in shape, build muscle, and improve your overall athletic abilities. Long story short: she's got it going on.

When Massy isn't busy training celebrities like Kelly Rowland and Tess Holliday, she loves to share adorable photos of her family on her Instagram. Today, she decided to share a workout she did with her baby girl, Indira. We know you're probably thinking: Indira was just running around the gym. But nope, Massy literally used her as a weight during her lower-body workout.

"No matter what the circumstances are, just do your best. Sometimes we don't get anything done, because we don't have the perfect scenario. I got about two circuits [completed], before she got annoyed, sleepy, and I had to put her down. Two circuits is better than zero," Massy wrote in her caption.

Strengthen your lower-body with the workout ahead. The baby is optional.

The Workout

Massy didn't share the how many reps and sets to do, but we recommend doing three to five rounds of the circuit, completing 10 to 15 reps of each exercise. If your legs aren't too tired after completing the circuit, you can finish the workout off with 20 minutes on the StairMaster like Massy.

Farewell, Crunches - Do These 11 Standing Exercises For Tighter, Stronger Abs

Crunches are an ab exercise I wish people would retire. They aren't that effective and can actually do more harm than good, especially if you're dealing with lower-back pain.

The 11 exercises ahead are great options if getting down on the floor is a hassle, you'd just rather not deal with the germs on the mat, or you're in need of new moves for your core routine.

Don't do all these moves at once unless you want to be extremely sore the following day. Instead, choose four to six exercises and add them into your workout, or do them alone for a quick ab blast.

19 Self-Care Gifts That Give a Serious Dose of TLC (Starting at $8)

It's been a long, busy, action-packed, stressful year. And a great way to tell a loved one that you care about them during the holidays would be to give them some much needed (and likely long overdue) self-care. I Own 10+ Pairs of Running Shoes, but These Are the Only Ones I Ever Wear

Since my high school days (more than a decade ago now), I've spent hundreds of dollars and run countless miles in sneakers that killed my feet. This past Summer, in hopes this pair would finally be the one, I treated myself to these Nike Epic React Flyknit Running Shoes ($150).

When they were released, I saw them all over my Instagram feed and was instantly attracted to their cool design and all the fun color choices. But the comfy design is what really sold me. The supersnug, sock-like silhouette tightly forms to my feet, making them feel secure and supported. They also feature a cushy sole that keeps my feet comfortable even on long-distance runs or high-intensity workouts. My favorite feature: they're so stylish! I've worn them outside the gym and off the running track with jeans to work or with cute sweatpants on the plane.

What are you waiting for? Try them for yourself. Keep scrolling to shop all the fun colors and find your match.

I'm a Trainer, and This Simple Move Is Great For Strengthening Your Upper Body and Abs

A few months ago, I had this great idea to train like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson for a few weeks. I had come across his workout programs online and was feeling slightly lazy and didn't want to design my own, so I worked out like the Rock.

The Rock trains like a bodybuilder - if you couldn't tell by the size of his arms - and his workouts are legit and insanely hard. His rep and set schemes are designed to leave every muscle in your body quivering while you're training and then have them feeling extremely sore for the days to come.

Out of all the workouts I did, his back and legs workouts were my favorite. One move that I really liked from his back workout and have begun to incorporate into my programs is the cable rope pullover. The first time I did it, I was shocked at how well it worked my back (specifically, my lats) and abs, leaving me sore for days. And because of that, I'm now sharing the move with all of you.

How to Do a Cable Pullover

  • Attach a triceps rope handle to the pulley on the carriage of a cable station. Adjust the carriage so that it's near the top third of the machine. The exact position will vary based on your height.
  • Next, select the amount of resistance you want: 10 to 15 pounds is a great starting point. As you begin to become more comfortable with the movement, feel free to increase the weight.
  • Facing the pulley, grab the rope and step approximately one foot away from the machine. Stand with a slight bend at your hips, your knees, and elbow joints.
  • On an exhale, drive your elbows back, pulling the rope down to your thighs. Be sure to keep your shoulders relaxed and your back flat. This completes one rep.
  • Complete three sets of 12 reps.

The 5 Foods That Will Help You Sleep Better Tonight, According to a Sleep Expert

There are very few things that are worse than the inability to fall asleep and get a quality night's rest. If you desperately want to improve your sleep without medication, grab a pen and a piece of paper - or open the notes app on your phone - and get ready to take notes.

To find out the best foods to eat for better sleep, POPSUGAR spoke to Alon Avidan, MD, MPH, director of the UCLA Sleep Disorders Center. Dr. Avidan explained that sleep disorders and disruption are caused by a variety of factors like having caffeine after 10 a.m. and restless legs syndrome.

If you have difficulties falling asleep, Dr. Avidan recommends skipping over-the-counter medicine because side effects can be severe. Instead, he advises seeing your primary care physician, completing a sleep questionnaire, and if necessary, a sleep study to get to the root of the problem.

He also suggests eating foods that have high levels of tryptophan (the precursor to melatonin) before bed to promote better sleep. "Melatonin helps the body transition to sleep. It is produced in the brain in response to darkness, it shuts down the alerting signal generated at the level of the circadian clock in the brain and allows people to fall asleep," he explained.

Ahead, you'll find five tryptophan-containing foods you should stock up on if improved sleep is what you're after.

Britney Spears Thanks Selena Gomez For Getting Her Through a "Long Workout"

Britney Spears is putting in the work, b*tch! The fit performer's toned tummy and muscular legs didn't just happen overnight; Britney stays in shape with everything from strength training to salsa dancing to yoga. In her latest Instagram video, Britney mixes it up with compound exercises with weights, more arm moves with dumbbells, crunches on a Bosu ball, and jumping rope.

Although Brit only shared a few of her exercises, she wrote in her Instagram caption that it was a "long workout." Luckily, she had motivation from a fellow performer: Selena Gomez. Britney gave Selena a shout-out and credited the "Back to You" singer for getting her through her workout. In the video above, Britney is sweating it out to Selena's song "Bad Liar."

After coming off a tour and visiting Ellen DeGeneres on The Ellen Show, Britney seems busier than ever. But she definitely makes time for fitness, and the proof is in the pudding - she's in better shape than ever!

ICYMI: Simone Biles Yawned Before Performing a Vault No Woman Has Ever Done Before

While you were at the pumpkin patch, apple picking, or just chilling this weekend, Simone Biles was busy making history. At the USA Gymnastics 2018 World Team Selection Camp this past weekend, Simone unveiled a new vault that no woman has ever done before.

Her vault consisted of a round-off onto the board, a half turn onto the table, and two half twists. Now, if you've never done gymnastics, or don't really follow the sport, it may sound like we're speaking a foreign language, but trust us when we say it translates to: Simone is a badass.

In order to fully comprehend what she just did, here's what you need to know. Before this weekend, Simone was performing the vault with one half twist, called the Cheng after Cheng Fei of China, who first performed it in 2005, Deadspin reported. She's been training full-time just shy of a year, and she's upped the difficulty of all four events since the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Oh, and before she completed the vault, it had only been performed by men, mic drop.

Her Twitter fans got in on the excitement, pointing out the fact that she yawned before executing the vault, and their reactions are spot-on.

Experts Reveal How Many Steps You Need to Take in a Day to Lose Weight

Whether you track your steps with a wearable device or through your phone, knowing how much you've walked in a day can be an extremely useful tool for weight loss. Many of our jobs entail sitting for a majority of the day, which can be bad for your body and your brain. However, simply walking and tracking your steps every day can reduce health risks and may even help you lose weight. But how much do you actually need to move around to reap the benefits?

The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns against a sedentary, inactive lifestyle and recommends 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity physical activity or 75 minutes a week of high-intensity activity. In other words, you need to be active for 30 minutes a day, five days a week. For additional health benefits, the CDC recommends doubling your goal and fitting in up to 300 minutes a week of moderate-intensity or 150 minutes of high-intensity physical activity.

Laura Arndt, a certified personal trainer and the CEO of Matriarc, a health and wellness app for moms, helped us break the CDC's recommendations into steps. Arndt says a 30-minute brisk walk can get most of her clients "between 3,000 and 5,000 steps, depending on their speed and their gait. However, we shouldn't be sitting the remainder of the day, so the goal is to achieve another 5,000 steps through everyday activity."

Arndt recommends that her clients aim for 10,000 total steps a day but notes that isn't a realistic goal for everyone. "The best thing to do is have someone wear a fitness tracker for a week, see what their average step counts are over the course of the week, and have them aim to increase their step counts by 10 percent," Arndt says. "This gives them a realistic goal, but it also forces them to step up their daily activity."

If you're specifically looking to lose weight, the intensity of your physical activity plays a significant role as well. "How briskly you walk plays a large role in how many calories you actually burn when walking. Walking a very slow 10,000 steps may not be adequate to actually result in weight loss," Dr. Gregg Kai Nishi, a surgeon at the Khalili Center and the director of the Institute For Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery at K and B Surgical Center, told POPSUGAR. "Conversely, walking very briskly, even if less than 10,000 steps, may be much more beneficial in terms of weight loss."

But even walking a brisk 10,000 steps per day may not be enough to burn off pounds on its own. "In addition to looking at your step counts, strength training has scientific benefits for increasing your metabolism, burning calories, and therefor helping with weight loss," says Arndt. "The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn during rest and during activity." She encourages her clients to start or continue a strength-training routine a minimum of two days a week, including free weights or activities such as yoga or a bootcamp-style class.

Of course, increasing your activity won't result in weight loss if you aren't creating a calorie deficit. It's also important to take a look at your eating habits throughout the day. While walking 6,000 to 10,000 or more steps a day can promote several health benefits, keeping track of what you're eating and how many calories you're consuming will go a long way toward helping you achieve your weight-loss goals. Be sure to eat a daily diet that consists of a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, protein, and healthy fats in addition to getting an adequate amount of physical activity if you're trying to lose weight.

There's a New Healthy Ice Cream in Town, and It's Packed With Good-For-Your-Gut Probiotics!

Clear some space in your freezers, folks, because there's a new healthy ice cream brand in town, and you're going to want every single flavor. World, meet Culture Republick. It's the first-ever light ice cream that's jam-packed with live probiotic cultures, aka the good-for-your-gut stuff that help regulate your digestive system. POPSUGAR got the inside scoop (corny pun fully intended) on the new brand and taste tested all seven flavors before it hits select store shelves, and we definitely think it ranks among the best in the now-saturated world of healthy ice creams.

First, let's discuss some fun stats about what makes Culture Republick so crave-worthy, shall we? For starters, each pint contains 3 billion (yes, billion) live and active cultures to help get your gut health back on track. On top of that, every pint boasts just 410 to 490 calories, a whopping 16 to 18 grams of protein, and 11 to 13 grams of fiber, depending on the flavor.

Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Victoria Messina

They all have a smooth, creamy texture and don't taste out of the ordinary in any way due to the added probiotics.

Speaking of the flavors, there are seven of 'em, and each mashup is just as mouthwatering as the next. There are Milk & Honey, Chocolate & Cherry, Lemon & Graham, Pistachio & Salted Caramel, Turmeric Chai & Cinnamon, Cold Brew & Chocolate Chip (my personal favorite), and Matcha & Fudge. They all have a smooth, creamy texture and don't taste out of the ordinary in any way due to the added probiotics. I mean, wouldn't you rather devour a nightly bowlful of Chocolate & Cherry ice cream rather than take a supplemental probiotic pill every day?

Another cool tidbit about Culture Republick: the brand partnered with up-and-coming artists to design the colorful pint packaging, and it plans to donate 10 percent of its profits to support the arts in local communities. How rad is that?

Culture Republick's probiotic ice creams are starting to roll out this month at select retailers, including Meijer, Shoprite, certain Target stores, and Albertsons, Safeways, and Rite Aids located in California, just to name a few. The pints will cost $4 to $5, which is definitely a lot more affordable than some of the overpriced competitors out there. Read on for a full breakdown of the nutritional facts for each flavor of this gut-friendly dessert, along with some candid thoughts that my fellow POPSUGAR employees and I had during our in-office taste test.

Should You Run Before You Lift?

If you ask 100 people if you should do cardio before or after strength training, chances are that you'll get an even split of answers. The surprising part of each answer, however, is that you'll get about 100 different reasons why you should or shouldn't do cardio first. Let's cut through the myths and misconceptions and give you the answers you need to build your best body!

A study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research discovered something very shocking: it doesn't really make a difference if you do cardio before or after training. Whether you're lifting weights or getting sweaty on a cardio machine, the same hormones spike. Also, you won't really notice much of a difference in your performance either way.

Even though the study was rather clear about the findings, opinions still vary. According to fitness coach Anthony J. Yeung, CSCS, "It's always better to do your strength training before cardio because you want to do your heavier stuff when your body is fresh. If you did it the other way, your body would get tired so you wouldn't be able to lift as much weight and your technique would worsen."

Diana Chaloux, CPT and owner of the online personal training website HitchFit.com, indicates that, "If your goal is fat loss, the ideal situation would be to perform strength training first, followed by cardiovascular training." She explains that "when you strength train, your body utilizes glycogen (which is stored carbohydrates) for fuel, so if you strength train first, and then do cardio immediately after (which prefers fat for fuel for lower intensity cardio), you would create an environment in your body conducive to fat metabolism."

What about morning cardio, you may ask? Well, research published by the British Journal of Nutrition found that people can burn up to 20 percent more body fat by running in the morning on an empty stomach. What does this mean for you? Some experts advise breaking up your training efforts to do cardio in the morning on an empty stomach and then weights later on in the day with a pre-workout protein-based snack.

What does this mean for you? You've got options - and there's never anything wrong with that! Our advice? If you can split your training efforts into two separate workouts, hit the gym on an empty stomach in the morning and do your cardio (and lift weights later in the day in a different session). If you can't go to the gym twice in one day, make the most of your single session by hitting the weights first then doing your cardio. This way you can do the heavy stuff when you are at your optimum energy levels.

Fun-Size Candy and Jumping Jacks Remind Us of Being a Kid, So We Put Them Together

We are almost in full-on Halloween mode - discussing costume ideas you can wear to the gym and searching for the appropriate decorations. And the candy - it's starting to appear everywhere in bowls and jars, so don't feel bad about going back to your coworker's desk for another fun-size Snickers, or stealing Peppermint Patties from your kiddo's trick-or-treating stash. Those little candies bring us joy and let us feel like a kid again, so enjoy them!

But, even though they're small, bite-sized pieces of candy, the calories can add up quickly. We're sorry, but we created this (possibly depressing) chart to show how many minutes of jumping jacks you need to do in order to work off Halloween candy - it'll help put all those empty wrappers in perspective. We're not saying not to eat them! But keeping this chart in mind might make you think twice about reaching for that 13th Mounds.

Did you know that one minute of vigorous jumping jacks (about 60) burns nine calories? It may seem like a lot of work, but if you have an uncontrollable Reese's obsession, what's a few (hundred) jumping jacks?!

This Is the Sexy Costume You Should Wear in the Bedroom, According to Astrology

Halloween is all about having fun, and it's natural to want to wear a creative (and maybe sexy!) costume to celebrate in the festivities. Yet there are actually certain costumes that are most appropriate for you based on your zodiac sign. For instance, some signs are more extroverted than others, have certain fetishes or interests, and have kinkier or more reserved sex preferences. This Halloween, let the stars lead you and pick out your next sexy costume to rock under the sheets.

Stop Making Women Answer For Abusive Men

In an appearance on CBS's Sunday Morning on Oct. 14, former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton offered surprisingly ignorant comments about her husband Bill Clinton's extramarital affair with then-White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Asked whether her husband should have resigned over the affair, Clinton responded, "Absolutely not," and clarified her stance that her husband did not abuse his power, because the relationship had been consensual and Lewinsky "was an adult."

Clinton's insinuation that women who are legal adults can't be victimized or exploited by older, powerful men was not only inaccurate but also deeply disappointing coming from someone who has dedicated her career to women's rights and been a role model to feminists for many decades. Whether or not a relationship between a male superior (and what superior could be more imposing than the president of the United States?) and a female subordinate is consensual on the surface, nearly all such relationships involve exploitation of inherent power dynamics.

Persistent media and cultural narratives . . . not only allow but encourage men accused of abuse to use the women in their lives as human shields, dodging accountability.

There is no excuse for Clinton's comments, but certainly, it's frustrating that she was even asked the question at all. In a trend that ironically undercuts #MeToo, all while purporting to advance the movement, women are still too often the ones forced to answer for men's abusive behaviors. And that's due to persistent media and cultural narratives that not only allow but encourage men accused of abuse to use the women in their lives as human shields, dodging accountability.

Of course, former President Clinton has been asked about the affair, and at one point even declined to apologize to Lewinsky. But he continues to avoid responsibility for his documented abuses of power and remains a beloved figure within the Democratic Party, even as Democratic Party leadership often purport to advance #MeToo.

While there's no excusing the former first lady's latest comments, we should never forget or minimize the pain and humiliation she was forced to suffer in the national spotlight - nor the tremendous burden she was forced to carry - as she was often the one who had to publicly answer for her husband's transgressions. And today, as one of the most accomplished and influential politicians of this generation in her own right, surely she deserves some level of respect from media as an autonomous leader independent of her husband.

#MeToo was started by a woman to empower women to speak on issues of sexual abuse when they so choose to. But the only people who are empowered by women being unwillingly brought to task over men's actions are the men who evade accountability for their own abuses of power as a result.

The phenomenon of women shouldering responsibility for abusive men has become a trend in politics. Last year, when then-Sen. Al Franken was accused of sexual misconduct, female Democrats in the Senate were the ones who were forced to answer for his alleged inappropriate behavior. And when women like Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand did speak up, they were met with backlash from male Democratic donors and leadership.

Gillibrand was widely criticized by men purporting to be liberals for publicly being the first senator to call for Franken's resignation. Critics attacked Gillibrand for being "opportunistic," a common, gendered criticism of female politicians, as if it's somehow inconceivable that women like Gillibrand are capable of genuinely caring about sexual violence, or that it's somehow difficult to believe seven women coming forward with allegations against the same man.

Seeking comment from women close to men accused of abuse is often used to reinforce the problematic notion that if a man didn't abuse one woman, then he hasn't abused any women.

We all have a responsibility to engage in conversations about systemic misogyny and abuse, come together to create solutions, and disavow abusive men - not just when they are political opponents, but even if they share our political party. But women aren't the only ones to whom this should apply. Sexual misconduct and abuse of power are not some fringe, tangential issue that only women are affected by, and they are actions largely perpetrated by men. In contrast, why aren't Republican men in Congress who have yet to say a word about the more than 20 allegations of sexual abuse against President Donald Trump incessantly confronted about their silence and inaction?

This issue is by no means limited to politics. Earlier this year, actress Alison Brie was asked about allegations of sexual misconduct against her brother-in-law James Franco on the same night she received a Screen Actors Guild Award, while her husband, Dave Franco, James's younger brother, has yet to publicly comment on the allegations. The incident, which saw Brie offer a respectful answer about the need to listen to women and survivors, seemed to highlight a double standard in who is brought to task and held responsible for the behavior of allegedly abusive men. James Franco's male family members have yet to publicly be confronted about allegations against him, while Brie had to answer for her brother-in-law on a night that should have been about her and her accomplishments.

In addition to shifting responsibility from accused men to women, seeking comment from women close to men accused of abuse is often used to reinforce the problematic notion that if a man didn't abuse one woman, then he hasn't abused any women. We've seen this with defenses of ousted CBS executive Les Moonves, whose wife, journalist Julie Chen, denied allegations against her husband, just as we saw it in the signed list of 65 women who knew Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in high school, vouching for his respect for women.

Of course, it's difficult to expect women with close relationships to men accused of abuse, from First Lady Melania Trump to Johnny Depp's daughter, to be capable of impartiality. With that in mind, one has to wonder whether it's productive for media to question them about allegations at all.

It's deeply frustrating and counterproductive to allow powerful, accused men to hide from allegations behind the women in their lives and skirt accountability for the harm and abuse they and their enablers, alone, are responsible for. The bottom line is that, while female abusers exist, women did not create the epidemic of systemic misogyny and sexual abuse that plagues every industry around the world. Yet, the overarching cultural narrative seems to be that it's our responsibility to fix this epidemic - all while trying to survive it.

Bloody Skulls, Skeletal Limbs, Pumpkins, Oh My! This Halloween Wedding Has It All

There are weddings, and then there are Halloween-themed weddings. Same, but different . . . in the best ways! And what makes this wedding even more fun? With intricate Halloween decor transforming its backyard setting, a chuppah built by the bride's father, and a handmade wedding dress by the bride herself, this wedding was one like never before.

The bride and groom, Melanie and Craig, met at an event for the video game World of Warcraft about 10 years ago. "Of the hundred-thousand people, we happened to be at the same place at the same time when the enemy faction came to raid the quest area we were in. We both ended up hiding under an overturned boat waiting for them to leave. Serendipity? Fate? Luck? We don't know, but life certainly has a sense of humor," the bride said.

The wedding took place at the groom's sister's beautiful 200-year-old home, which was intricately decorated in goo and gore for the Halloween-inspired festivity. Everything from bloody skulls and skeletal limbs to pumpkins of all sizes adorned the venue. And to complete the theme, the flower girl carried a cauldron full of petals. The whole wedding was absolutely boo-tiful! Get all the Halloween feels with these spooky (and romantic) photos ahead.

6 Best Dog Breeds For Families With Small Kids

It's not unusual for families to adopt a dog around the same time as having their own children. But are some dog breeds better suited for families with small children? We were recently asked that, so we reached out to Dr. Eva Radke, DVM, of the East San Rafael Veterinary Clinic in California to see what we could come up with.

There are various things to consider, according to Radke, aside from a dog just being a family-friendly breed. She recommends taking your own daily life into account. "Are you an active family who spends a lot of time hiking, running, and camping?" she asks. "Or do you tend to stay home cooking and enjoying movies? You will want to choose a dog whose temperament, size, and energy level best matches your family."

At the end of the day, it's also important to remember that your dog is just that: a dog. "Even the gentlest-mannered dog is still an animal with her own set of instincts and ways to express herself," Radke said. She suggests you never leave your small children unattended with the dog, just in case, and always supervise them when they're together. Your pup may always tolerate the ear and tail tugs from your kid, but you don't want to run the risk of the dog snapping one day when you aren't paying attention.

Keep reading to find six dog breeds Radke said are best suited for families, based on each breed's typical personality traits.

Haben Girma: Why I Never Tell People With Disabilities to "Just Work Harder"

"We shouldn't have hired you." The manager's words sent chills down my spine. When I flew to Juneau, Alaska, after my second year of college, I thought I had this cool job leading tours of the Capitol Building. The recruiters knew about my deafness. My public speaking skills impressed them, and we agreed I would receive questions and comments during the tours through my assistive technology. They knew about my racial status. I checked the box for African American on the application. There was just one thing they didn't know until I arrived at the Capitol. When I walked in for orientation with the other new hires, the manager pulled me aside.

The manager's cramped office felt suffocating. I sat up straight in my chair. "Are you telling me to leave because I'm blind?"

"No. It's because you're from California. These jobs are supposed to go to Alaskan residents."

My stomach dropped. For a moment I just sat there, speechless. "The paperwork showed that I'm from California. We even did the interview over the phone because I don't live here. You've known that for weeks. Why did you hire me if the position was only for Alaskans?"

"We made a mistake. I'm sorry."

Outside, a light rain drizzled over Juneau. People didn't come for the persistent precipitation. People traveled to the city for spectacular scenery, wildlife sightings, and chance to witness the majesty of Mendenhall Glacier. I hiked alongside waterfalls and dipped my toes in glacier water during my first trip. This time I hoped to fit in and find a job like all the other college kids. After the government, the tourism industry is the second largest employer in Juneau. With over a million tourists, about half of them arriving on cruise ships, many employers turn to the lower 48 to try to fill their many Summer openings.

Openings popped up on Craigslist every day. I sent out dozens of applications, focusing on those that matched my strengths in public speaking. Since helping to build a school in Mali, I'd logged in numerous hours speaking to audiences big and small. My experience impressed the Capitol Building recruiters enough to choose me over Alaskans, at least until I walked in with a white cane. The applications led to interviews, the interviews led to rejections. Back on Craigslist, I broadened my search, responding to ads that sought people with strong reading, writing, or analytical skills. The pattern continued: submit an application, brave an interview, then face a rejection. I changed my strategy, responding to nearly all the ads: shelving gift stores, baking cakes, folding laundry in hotels. Rejection. Rejection. Rejection.

When you do everything right and society stomps on you, over and over, it creates a piercing, gut-twisting pain. It causes you to question the conventional wisdom that a person who works hard will overcome all obstacles.

Unemployment rates for people with disabilities are about double general unemployment rates - 9.2 percent compared to 4.2 percent. For blind people, the unemployment rate is around 70 percent. Disability professionals warned me: work hard or you'll never find employment. So I studied hard in school, graduating high school as valedictorian. I spent a Summer at an independence training center for the blind, learning nonvisual techniques for everything from crossing busy streets to using a radial arm saw. I volunteered, both in my community and abroad. The statistic still managed to claim me, leaving me jobless in Jobville, Alaska.

Changing strategies, I reached out to my community for help. My friend's mom recommended me to Rachel, the manager of a local gym. Rachel reviewed my résumé, interviewed me, and hired me as a part-time front desk clerk. On our tour of the gym, Rachel taught me how to use the machines, clean up the changing rooms, and manage the cash register and merchandise. Rachel turned out to be a fantastic manager. My white cane didn't faze her. Whether I used sight or a nonvisual technique was less important than whether I got the job done.

One day a woman walked up to the front desk. "Hi, I'm trying to use a treadmill but it's not working."

"I'll take a look. Which one?" I followed her to a row of treadmills. She stopped by the second machine. Setting my cane down, I stepped up to the machine and pressed the on button. Nothing. I tried the other buttons on the panel. Nothing. Using both hands, I systematically searched the machine from top to bottom. Along the base I found a switch. When I flicked it, the treadmill whirred to life.

"Oh my god, thank you! That was amazing. I didn't even see that switch."

"I didn't either." My cathartic laughter got her laughing, too. Sometimes nonvisual techniques beat visual techniques.

At the end of the Summer, I returned to college with a new outlook on work. I believe in working hard, but I put more emphasis on working smart. When we feel we've hit a wall, it's better to develop a new strategy rather than struggling at the same wall. I went on to graduate with honors from Lewis & Clark College, study law at Harvard, and partnered with a Seeing Eye dog. Now I'm my own boss, working as a disability rights lawyer, author, and public speaker. In 2015, I introduced President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden at the White House's 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This Summer, I spoke at the Berlin Morals and Machines conference and met with Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Employment discrimination and high unemployment rates still haunt people with disabilities. Many work hard, develop impressive skills, and continually face discrimination in the hiring process. Hard work alone will not overcome the widespread discrimination against people with disabilities. Employers need to break down disability barriers. People with disabilities succeed when communities choose to be inclusive. The biggest barriers exist not in the person, but in the social, physical, and digital environments.

Employers that break down access barriers develop a stronger workforce. Numbering over 1.3 billion worldwide, people with disabilities are the largest minority group. Employers are missing out on numerous talented, responsible, and driven workers. Avoid assumptions about what people with disabilities can or can't do. People with disabilities often have alternative techniques that get the job done. The process of developing these alternative techniques leads to strong problem solving skills, fresh insights, and exciting new solutions. People with disabilities drive innovation, sparking the creation of many of the technologies we use today. Employers seeking a competitive advantage should invest in accessibility. These employers gain access to a large pool of talented workers, benefit from increased growth, and facilitate further innovation.
