This Halloween Wedding Shoot Is a Gothic Fairy Tale Come to Life - Complete With Live Snake!

Now, we are sure you have all seen over-the-top wedding photos, but have you ever seen anything like these? This Gothic wedding was styled and shot by photographer Jewels Gray in the hopes of capturing all things romantic, intricate, and spine-chilling. Looking for a bride that captured the stone-cold essence of Snow White, Jewels used Sabrina as the perfect centerpiece. With milky white skin and jet black hair, this model captured the dark, Gothic vibes as well as the idyllic and charming wedding feels. The shoot was complete with a black wedding dress, gold skull rings, and even a real boa constrictor. These photos are frighteningly romantic . . . if that's even possible.

As for everything that was needed to make this scene come to life, most of the props came from vendors in the St. Louis area, but the bride and groom brought some of their own pieces to complete the shoot. "Sabrina's shoes and earrings were her own, and I about died when I saw the shoes she brought!" Jewels said. (TBH, we couldn't believe she just had those lying around her closet, either.) As for the groom, Simba was dressed head-to-toe in black (complete with black nail polish) and brought his own motorcycle boots to finish off his look.

Check out this hauntingly beautiful Halloween wedding ahead and get ready to be spooked!

Allow Barack Obama to Explain Why There's No Excuse For Missing Midterm Elections

Is there any excuse that's stopping you from voting in the upcoming midterm elections? Barack Obama is here to tell you why nothing should stop voters from getting to the polls. In a video for ATTN:, the former president addressed seven common excuses, including "midterm elections are boring" and "my vote doesn't matter."

Among the many reasons Obama offered as to why voters should participate in the election, perhaps the most compelling is the diverse range of candidates. "For way too long, politicians haven't been representative of America as a whole - but that's changing this year," he said. "More women are running for office than ever before. More LGBT candidates are running for office, first-time candidates, young veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, young leaders from across the political spectrum."

Watch the fun PSA above, and honestly, just do as the former president says comes Nov. 6. Though several voter registration deadlines have already passed, there are still quite a few states that have deadlines later in October. If you are already registered but won't be able to make it to the polls, learn how to vote via absentee ballot.

This Parisian Wedding Is What Dreams Are Made Of - but 1 Groom's Regal Cape Stole the Show

Um, hello. If you haven't already, please put a stop to whatever you're doing and take a look at these breathtaking wedding photos that are currently making their rounds on social media. The photos in question belong to James and Riccardo Burrell-Hinds, who recently found viral fame after photos of them tying the knot in Paris earlier this year were shared on Twitter by a family member and retweeted by more than 43,000 users. Not to be dramatic or anything, but I audibly gasped at the sight of them, and I honestly can't even figure out what I'm the most impressed by. Just look at that backdrop! And those flowers! And that cape! It's all so stunning.

According to the newlyweds, the idea to get married abroad was actually brought up just five months before they were set to exchange vows. "We had seen so many weddings happening in the months leading up to ours so we had to do something unique and fitting for us," they told POPSUGAR. "Paris is just such a fairy tale and regal city so it was just the perfect place for a dream wedding. We knew that it would be a beautiful place for our family to experience."

James and Riccardo met in 2015 and were engaged a few years later. When their big day finally came, James stole the show in an elaborate wedding cape that was inspired by his desire to have a "royal" wedding. "He was determined to have that cape no matter where we decided to get married," Riccardo said. "He wanted to make sure we had a royal wedding, and it just worked out perfectly with the palace setting that we decided on for the ceremony." See more photos from James and Riccardo's wedding day ahead.

Watch Out: These Astrology Sign Pairings Are Most Likely to Cheat on Each Other

Ever wonder which type of partner might be most likely to cheat? Well, it turns out the stars might have a say in the matter, as certain zodiac pairings might butt heads and be unfaithful over others based on differing personality traits and values. Of course, don't ditch your significant other simply because the zodiac says so, but keep the warning in mind. You may not be so shocked if things start to go sour. Here are a few sign pairings that could have a love triangle thrown in.

Stop Making Women Answer For Abusive Men

In an appearance on CBS's Sunday Morning on Oct. 14, former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton offered surprisingly ignorant comments about her husband Bill Clinton's extramarital affair with then-White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Asked whether her husband should have resigned over the affair, Clinton responded, "Absolutely not," and clarified her stance that her husband did not abuse his power, because the relationship had been consensual and Lewinsky "was an adult."

Clinton's insinuation that women who are legal adults can't be victimized or exploited by older, powerful men was not only inaccurate but also deeply disappointing coming from someone who has dedicated her career to women's rights and been a role model to feminists for many decades. Whether or not a relationship between a male superior (and what superior could be more imposing than the president of the United States?) and a female subordinate is consensual on the surface, nearly all such relationships involve exploitation of inherent power dynamics.

Persistent media and cultural narratives . . . not only allow but encourage men accused of abuse to use the women in their lives as human shields, dodging accountability.

There is no excuse for Clinton's comments, but certainly, it's frustrating that she was even asked the question at all. In a trend that ironically undercuts #MeToo, all while purporting to advance the movement, women are still too often the ones forced to answer for men's abusive behaviors. And that's due to persistent media and cultural narratives that not only allow but encourage men accused of abuse to use the women in their lives as human shields, dodging accountability.

Of course, former President Clinton has been asked about the affair, and at one point even declined to apologize to Lewinsky. But he continues to avoid responsibility for his documented abuses of power and remains a beloved figure within the Democratic Party, even as Democratic Party leadership often purport to advance #MeToo.

While there's no excusing the former first lady's latest comments, we should never forget or minimize the pain and humiliation she was forced to suffer in the national spotlight - nor the tremendous burden she was forced to carry - as she was often the one who had to publicly answer for her husband's transgressions. And today, as one of the most accomplished and influential politicians of this generation in her own right, surely she deserves some level of respect from media as an autonomous leader independent of her husband.

#MeToo was started by a woman to empower women to speak on issues of sexual abuse when they so choose to. But the only people who are empowered by women being unwillingly brought to task over men's actions are the men who evade accountability for their own abuses of power as a result.

The phenomenon of women shouldering responsibility for abusive men has become a trend in politics. Last year, when then-Sen. Al Franken was accused of sexual misconduct, female Democrats in the Senate were the ones who were forced to answer for his alleged inappropriate behavior. And when women like Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand did speak up, they were met with backlash from male Democratic donors and leadership.

Gillibrand was widely criticized by men purporting to be liberals for publicly being the first senator to call for Franken's resignation. Critics attacked Gillibrand for being "opportunistic," a common, gendered criticism of female politicians, as if it's somehow inconceivable that women like Gillibrand are capable of genuinely caring about sexual violence, or that it's somehow difficult to believe seven women coming forward with allegations against the same man.

Seeking comment from women close to men accused of abuse is often used to reinforce the problematic notion that if a man didn't abuse one woman, then he hasn't abused any women.

We all have a responsibility to engage in conversations about systemic misogyny and abuse, come together to create solutions, and disavow abusive men - not just when they are political opponents, but even if they share our political party. But women aren't the only ones to whom this should apply. Sexual misconduct and abuse of power are not some fringe, tangential issue that only women are affected by, and they are actions largely perpetrated by men. In contrast, why aren't Republican men in Congress who have yet to say a word about the more than 20 allegations of sexual abuse against President Donald Trump incessantly confronted about their silence and inaction?

This issue is by no means limited to politics. Earlier this year, actress Alison Brie was asked about allegations of sexual misconduct against her brother-in-law James Franco on the same night she received a Screen Actors Guild Award, while her husband, Dave Franco, James's younger brother, has yet to publicly comment on the allegations. The incident, which saw Brie offer a respectful answer about the need to listen to women and survivors, seemed to highlight a double standard in who is brought to task and held responsible for the behavior of allegedly abusive men. James Franco's male family members have yet to publicly be confronted about allegations against him, while Brie had to answer for her brother-in-law on a night that should have been about her and her accomplishments.

In addition to shifting responsibility from accused men to women, seeking comment from women close to men accused of abuse is often used to reinforce the problematic notion that if a man didn't abuse one woman, then he hasn't abused any women. We've seen this with defenses of ousted CBS executive Les Moonves, whose wife, journalist Julie Chen, denied allegations against her husband, just as we saw it in the signed list of 65 women who knew Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in high school, vouching for his respect for women.

Of course, it's difficult to expect women with close relationships to men accused of abuse, from First Lady Melania Trump to Johnny Depp's daughter, to be capable of impartiality. With that in mind, one has to wonder whether it's productive for media to question them about allegations at all.

It's deeply frustrating and counterproductive to allow powerful, accused men to hide from allegations behind the women in their lives and skirt accountability for the harm and abuse they and their enablers, alone, are responsible for. The bottom line is that, while female abusers exist, women did not create the epidemic of systemic misogyny and sexual abuse that plagues every industry around the world. Yet, the overarching cultural narrative seems to be that it's our responsibility to fix this epidemic - all while trying to survive it.

6 Ways I Benefited From Turning Off My Phone For Just 1 Week

I've had a cell phone since I was 11. I know - let that sink in for a second. Post 9/11, my parents wanted to make sure my brother and I had a way to get in touch with them in case of emergencies, so for the past decade and a half, I've had a phone essentially super glued to my left hand. In essence, I've been conditioned.

This past year, I hit my threshold of feeling overwhelmed. I was so tuned into everything around me and around the world 24/7, responding to everyone within seconds, constantly available . . . that I forgot to tune into what I needed. As such, stress levels contributed to atrocious mental health, chronic illness, and a destroyed immune system.

I needed to do a hard reset, and not on my phone - on my life.

The reset started with clearing my calendar, finding a place to chill out and rest, and then digitally detoxing. Phase one: move apps like Instagram to new folders on my phone and put new apps in their former places to see how often I was mindlessly opening them. Phase two: delete social media apps temporarily. Phase three: no tech for one week. GASP! I know. Here's what went down. (Note: this also went down on a week I was not at work - truly tech-free!)

You only have 30 minutes? You can absolutely get in an intense calorie-burning, muscle-building session. This CrossFit workout involves running, some dumbbell moves, and box jumps for the ultimate total-body workout. CrossFit coach and competitor Dani Horan of Champlain Valley CrossFit said to engage your core throughout the workout, focus on good form, and work on transitioning between each move quickly and smoothly.

30-Minute CrossFit Workout

Equipment needed: one medium-weight dumbbell, and a box or sturdy bench

Directions: This is an AMRAP (as many rounds as possible) workout. After warming up for five minutes with some light cardio and dynamic stretching, start the timer for 30 minutes. Complete as many rounds of the four-move workout as you can. Focus on moving as fast as possible, with correct form, and with as little rest as possible.

  • 300-meter run
  • Squat with overhead press: 15 reps
  • Box jump: 12 reps
  • Single arm overhead squat: 9 reps each side

Modifications: If you can't run outside or on a treadmill, do 90 to 120 seconds of high-knees, jump rope, or use another cardio machine like a rower or bike. If the squat with overhead press is easy, do dumbbell snatches instead. If box jumps are too difficult, or you have an injury, do step-ups holding light dumbbells.

What You Eat (or Don't Eat) Before a Workout Could Help You Burn Fat Faster

I run four to six miles every morning, usually on just a cup of coffee. Friends are always surprised that I'd put by body through that, but this pattern - known as a fasted workout or fasted cardio - has never hindered my workout, and may actually be beneficial.

"When insulin levels are low, your body has no choice but to burn fat. Naturally this happens faster when you haven't eaten," said ACE-certified personal trainer Lisa Niren, head instructor at Studio and a founding instructor at Peloton in New York City. "I do fasted cardio daily, and I've seen first hand that my body uses fat stores for energy rather than the glucose in my system, which is what happens if you eat prior to the workout session."

In order to be in a truly fasted state, you'd have to go without food for eight hours, which is why morning workouts are so effective.

To make the most of your workout, Niren suggests high-intensity interval training. "HIIT is the most efficient type of cardiovascular exercise to accompany fasting, which will yield the best results in the shortest amount of time," she said. "This type of cardio uses your body's twitch muscles, which have tremendous metabolism and hormonal benefits, meaning you will lose weight faster."

You should know, though, that fasted cardio is not for everyone. Both Niren and Kellilyn Fierras, MS, a registered dietitian, NASM-certified personal trainer, and instructor at EverybodyFights in Boston, said you should listen to your body.

"Some people may feel fine on fasted cardio and some (myself included) may feel super-tired, which will likely make their workout suffer," Fierras told POPSUGAR. "Eating before exercise is meant to increase one's performance and endurance, keep blood sugars stable, stimulate mental clarity, and delay fatigue. However, if you find you can work out and function properly on an empty stomach, it's essential that you properly refuel post-workout."

A Quick, 20-Minute Low-Impact Workout For the Days When You Don't Really Want to Train

I know a lot of people think trainers are invincible, but the truth is, we're just like you. Some days my body feels amazing and ready to take on any workout, and other days I'd rather not step foot in a gym.

On the days when I'm feeling blah, I take a moment to figure out if it's just a funk or if there's truly something going on, like not getting more than five hours of sleep the night before. If it's not something serious like poor recovery, sleep, or nutrition, I put on my workout clothes (the hardest part when you have minimal motivation), and head to the gym.

Once I'm at the gym, I'm typically out of my funk and continue with an intense strength workout. If I'm still not feeling it that day, there's one workout I always do: an incline walk on the treadmill with weights. It's the perfect workout for those blah days, and I'm in and out of the gym within 30 minutes.

The Dumbbell Hill Workout

  • Grab a pair of 10-20 pound dumbbells before heading to the treadmill. Once you're at the treadmill, place the dumbbells off to the side and adjust the incline to anywhere between 5.0 and 10.0.
  • Before adjusting the speed of the treadmill, pick up the dumbbells. The speed should be between 2.5 mph (this will be an easier walk) and 5.0 mph (a brisk walk). You can always change the speed, making it slower or faster to meet your needs.
  • Hold the dumbbells with your arms extended by your side. Be sure to keep your shoulders relaxed, your chest open, and your core engaged throughout the duration of the walk. Hunching forward is a good indicator that you need to lighten the weight.
  • Continue walking for 20 minutes.

Don't forget to stretch once you're done!

This Is Why Walking Isn't Helping You Lose Weight, According to a Trainer

There's no denying that walking is a great form of exercise. Not only is it accessible pretty much anywhere you are, it's also easy on the joints and an activity all fitness levels can enjoy. However, if you're walking and noticing that your scale won't budge, there are a few tweaks you can make to turn walking into a fat-burning motion.

To get to the bottom of those possible reasons and how to fix them, we talked to personal trainer Chris Kelly, NASM, CPT, CF, LI. He verified that you absolutely can lose weight by walking, but you have to keep these things in mind to make the most of it.

You Guys, the Science Behind Weighted Blankets Is Actually Fascinating

Weighted blankets are good for more than just keeping you warm and cozy while you sleep. There's actually quite a bit of science behind why they work, especially for people with anxiety.

A weighted blanket is exactly what it sounds like: a heavy blanket with evenly distributed weight throughout that essentially cocoons you while you're using it. Its benefits are twofold. The blanket both hugs you and grounds you, and each of these actions affects hormone levels, easing your anxiety.

Consider the hug first. Hugs naturally make people feel better because they release oxytocin, a hormone that helps bring your blood pressure down, slows your heart, and makes you feel relaxed. The simulated hug can also release serotonin, a hormone that decreases stress.

Weighted blankets also keep you grounded, and according to a study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, grounding the body - or weighing it down - regulates the secretion of cortisol during sleep. Cortisol is a stress hormone that flares when you're anxious.

If you're considering a weighted blanket to help make you less anxious, consider getting one that's 10 percent of your bodyweight, and make sure to read the product descriptions carefully before choosing. While there are seemingly no side effects to using one of these blankets, it's never a bad idea to talk to your doctor first.

I'm Not Shy, I Have Social Anxiety - This Is How I Manage It

A self-proclaimed feminist, I grew up listening to unapologetic riot grrrl bangers and worshiping the ground that Ruth Bader Ginsburg walks on, but I wasn't, and am still not, a very outspoken person, much to my chagrin. My mentors and loved ones have often called me shy. While I have strong opinions, I'm also severely self-conscious about sharing them in a way that exceeds beyond shyness. You see, I have social anxiety.

Untethered from my safe suburban upbringing, I became aware of my anxiety when I left for college. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Attending a large, competitive university gave me exciting opportunities to learn while also making me acutely conscious of my anxiety. This, of course, made me more anxious. My grades as a humanities major, unfortunately, hinged on participation, which is by far one of academia's cruelest inventions. Whenever I mustered up the courage to raise my sweaty hand, my heart beat a thousand miles per minute. My mind would go blank from the crippling fear of saying something dumb. Oh, and don't even get me started on presentations, which were one-way rides to nausea.

It's frustrating to have a lot to say but also feel like something is constantly pulling the cord between your brain and your mouth.

My worrisome mind touched other parts of my life as well. Making friends in a new environment was often difficult because I never felt well-adjusted enough to contribute to conversations. Case in point: at a party, I once burned through my data watching an entire episode of The X-Files on the stairwell of an apartment complex when I lost the person who brought me there.

After much agonizing, I set up an appointment with a school psychologist for a free counseling session. I left with a diagnosis of social anxiety. My psychologist gave me a small "homework assignment" to strike up a conversation with someone. While it struck me as slightly paternalistic, it did help me manage my anxiety by giving me a concrete goal. Shortly after, I went to a club event and despite early reluctance, made small talk with someone who would become one of my closest friends in college.

I wish I could say that something inspiring happened and forever fixed me, but I still sometimes put my foot in my mouth in front of people that I don't know well. It's frustrating to have a lot to say but also feel like something is constantly pulling the cord between your brain and your mouth.

I get shaky. I stutter. My palms get clammy. In order to mitigate those feelings, I avoid potentially unpleasant social interactions.

The major difference between shyness and social anxiety, for me, is the physical manifestations of the latter. I don't always have control over how my body reacts to certain situations, and it often feels like the rational part of my brain is watching from the sidelines. I get shaky. I stutter. My palms get clammy. In order to mitigate those feelings, I avoid potentially unpleasant social interactions.

Still, I do crave meaningful human connections, so I've picked up a few techniques over the years to control my misgivings. Most days, I manage my social anxiety by staying present in the moment, whether I'm reconnecting with an old friend or talking with a client. Deep breathing, which I once believed to be a scam, helps me center myself. (One of my favorite exercises comes from a recent interview that I heard on Fresh Air with Annette Bening!) I'm far from any transcendental level of zen, but you know what? I'm living my life the best that I can.

Although it can often be more detrimental than not, my excessive zeroing in on details also helps me stay present. I like paying attention to small things about people - maybe a book they're reading or a lipstick they're wearing - and then starting a conversation from there. It's astounding how many friends I've made while talking about my favorite makeup!

I'm not my anxiety, but experiencing this condition has heightened my self-awareness. It makes me deliberate about the things that I do and considerate about how they'll affect the people around me. Now, I'm better at not letting that turn into crippling self-consciousness. Listen, I won't be partying like Gatsby any time soon, but I'll try my best to approach life with an open - not uncontrollably beating - heart.

I'm Obsessed With This New Kombucha That Tastes Like Fall in a Bottle

Well slap on my riding boots and call me basic, because I love all things Fall: pumpkin coffee (made healthier, of course), running in the park when the leaves are changing, and layering up in cozy sweatshirts and cute scarves. One of my favorite things about Fall, aside from dragging my husband to the pumpkin patch, is sipping on seasonal hard cider.

The bad part is that spiked cider obviously contains sugar, and alcoholic beverages should only be consumed in moderation. Since it's generally frowned upon to pop open a hard cider at your desk at 10 a.m., I have found the next best thing: GT's Living in Gratitude Kombucha. GT's stopped by the POPSUGAR office for a kombucha tasting, and as soon as I sipped on this new seasonal flavor, I was in love.

The Fall kombucha is made with apple, turmeric, carrot, and other cider spices (in addition to its standard kombucha formula of fermented black and green tea). It tastes just like my favorite hard cider but only has eight grams of sugar per serving (with two servings per bottle). Plus, since kombucha is fermented with cultures of bacteria and yeast, it contains good-for-your-gut probiotics, which can help regulate digestion and boost your immune system.

GT's is taking the season of giving to heart by partnering with Feeding America to fight domestic hunger. If you post a photo of any GT's kombucha on social media and tag @GTsKombucha with the hashtag #LivingInGratitude, GT's will donate 10 meals to families in need for every photo posted - up to 500,000 meals.

Unfortunately, this kombucha is only available until Dec. 31 (although stores will probably still have some on their shelves into January). Check the store locator to find Living in Gratitude near you; each bottle is about $4. And I'm not the only one enjoying it; scroll through our gallery of other people who are #LivingInGratitude and enjoying their Fall kombuchas!

I Did a 1-Minute Plank Every Day For a Week - Here's What Happened

I recently took up yoga. When I learned that improved posture and balance were associated with core body strength, I sought to strengthen mine. I decided to challenge myself to hold a one-minute plank daily for seven days. I wanted to see if something so simple could create noticeable change and if I should integrate the practice regularly into my morning routine. Here's what I learned and what you might experience during your own plank challenge.

It fits into almost any schedule.

No matter how busy you are, there's almost no excuse for not finding a minute to do a plank, especially when those 60 seconds will be spent doing something physically positive for your body. You can wake up one minute earlier, go to sleep one minute later, multitask so you aren't giving up anything, subtract a minute from your daily social media use - there are so many ways to make time, and trust me, you'll want to!

You can do a plank almost anywhere.

So I wouldn't forget, I did my plank every morning before leaving for work. Beyond the walls of my gym, I started to notice people planking in unexpected places, like at the park when out for my morning run, and even at work! Doing a plank requires very little equipment (maybe a mat) and no equipment if the floor is clean.

It was simple but rewarding.

There was more positive value in adding a simple exercise to my morning routine than there was actual time spent doing it.

I could feel the difference.

By the end of the week, I was feeling stronger in my workouts, which I do four to five times a week. I became more aware of my core and could recognize when and how I was using my newfound strength. I felt mental benefits, too! There's something relaxing about the idea of spending one minute of your day, every day, solely focused on a single activity.

Small goals matter too.

It is all too easy to get caught up in the idea that our goals need to be big, that they need to be a journey full of big strides. So it's helpful to remember that those big goals are actually reached one (sometimes small) step at a time. This challenge was not only a physical and mental boost, it was also a lesson to not undervalue my accomplishments.

Final Thoughts

Since completing the one-week challenge, I've decided to add planking to my daily routine. While I've increased my holding time to two minutes in order to continue challenging myself, I'm most excited about this being a lifestyle change rather than a short-term challenge, not to mention all the positive benefits ahead.

These 5 Moves Will Lift and Sculpt Your Butt - Using Only a Resistance Band

Resistance bands are cheap, portable, and a game changer for your butt. None more so than booty bands, the smaller resistance bands you've probably spotted on Instagram - they're typically used around the thighs to fire up the glutes. While the name may sound more like a toy than a fitness phenomenon, there's nothing that will lift and strengthen those muscles faster.

And firming your butt may be more crucial than ever. "Glute amnesia is becoming more and more of an issue because our jobs literally keep us sitting on our butts behind a desk all day," trainer Sarah Chadwell, NASM, CPT, told POPSUGAR. "One way to counteract glute amnesia is to use glute-focused exercises combined with bands two to three times per week. Not only are you keeping your glutes strong and healthy, but you'll also sculpt the most sought-after fitness asset: a round booty."

Chadwell shared her favorite and most effective banded glute exercises, and here's how she suggests using them:

  1. You can do two of the following exercises as a warmup before you hit the weights on legs day.
  2. You can simply swap your legs-day workout for two to three sets of each of these exercises at 15-20 reps per set.
  3. Or, if you sit most of the day at work, try doing three of these exercises three times per week when you get home.

Because these blankets are carefully made to match a specific size and weight, they can run you a couple hundred dollars - but now, with their popularity reaching critical mass, more are becoming available at a lower price point.

My Mom Took Over My Dating Life - Here's What Happened

This story is about Summer, my sweet, heartwarming, love-loving mother. At five foot six and [AGE REDACTED], she's still a natural blonde who believes in regular exercise, plant-based diets, and daily meditation. We're alike in our effervescent joy and propensity for fun. I get my optimistic glee from my mom and fear of not doing my homework from my dad. We differ in that I grew up to live in a big city, work in a tall building, and pay big money for small closet space. She grew up to raise animals, teach Sunday school, and take great pleasure in spending time in nature. Summer is a kinder, more vulnerable, and honest version of me, without such a harsh adult exoskeleton.

As many moms would be, she was thrilled at the notion of this takeover. You could practically hear her cracking her knuckles all the way in San Diego while she set up camp at the computer. Using her preferred dating platform, Match.com, she set about setting me up.

Dating App Profile

Here's how I describe myself on dating apps: "Equal parts Reese Witherspoon and Amy Schumer. 5'4." That's it. A dear friend blessed me with this flattering description and my circle of cohorts wholeheartedly agree on its accuracy. It's plenty of context and applies to both looks and personality. Summer didn't hate it, but she wanted more, so here's what she added:

"My friends describe me as equal parts Reese Witherspoon and Amy Schumer. I'm living my dream life here in San Francisco. My work as a senior director in communications and public relations is thrilling and challenging and I love it. I enjoy people and so many of the activities going on here in the city. If you are outgoing, have a strong leadership personality, and know how to enjoy life, you just may be my prince charming."

Aside from the two promotions she handed me and the line about prince charming, it's wasn't bad, but it was far more emphatic and revealing than I'd venture to be if this were all up to me. It wasn't, so I let Summer introduce me to a few folks.

My Mom's Openers

We agreed that she was in charge of selecting the guys and sending them an initial opener. If they responded, I'd take over the conversation and aim to set up a date. Overall, her introductions were really something. Here are a handful of my favorites:

  • "I love your name and the meaning of it. It feels like it fits you, do you love it?" (I took the liberty of Googling his name, and it turns out there are two meanings. Depending on who you ask it either means "powerful" or "blackness and sorrow." Luckily, his name was the first.)
  • "I like your profile. How did you ever get to hold a koala bear?" (This pick wasn't bad, and I'd actually already gone on a date with this guy about 18 months ago and ghosted him because he was too into sports. If you're reading this, koala guy, I'm very sorry for the confusion.)
  • "I do yoga both at home and at classes. Which do you prefer? Joy in this moment and always." (Literally, what? At first I was frustrated by this, but it's so her I couldn't help but smile at it.)

She also had a couple renditions of profile flattery. Her strategy was to tell them she liked them without asking a question that might make them feel forced to engage. Instead, she left the ball in their court with statements like these:

  • "Enjoyed your profile. Check out mine, and if you feel a connection, I'd love to hear from you."
  • "I am enjoying my present moment reading your profile, very nice!"

After a while I asked her to cool it a little and we settled on aiming for two-word openers like, "Hey there" or "Happy Friday!" She wasn't keen on my ideas, but she stuck to shorter opening lines including:

  • "I like your sense of humor."
  • "You sound fun."
  • And my personal favorite, "I'm game."

Mom's Ranking of My Romantic Prospects

My mom likes to joke that if you're going to marry for the wrong reasons, marry for money because looks fade. So perhaps it's no surprise that she deprioritized aesthetics in favor of more lasting qualities, like professionalism and spiritual values.

The mother of an agnostic gin-loving Netflix-watcher wanted me daughter to date Buddha.

This led to several conversations about dealbreakers, including the fact that just because she wants me to have a spiritual practice does not mean I should be dating someone with one. That was also true of other attributes, including vegetarianism, guys who don't drink, and even, those who don't like TV.

That's right, the mother of an agnostic gin-loving Netflix-watcher wanted me to date Buddha. Things were not looking promising.

The Date My Mom Helped Set Up

During the course of this experiment, my mom picked out a handful of eligible suitors, all of whom were meditators with advanced degrees and professional jobs. A few of them were reasonably pleasant, and finally, after what I thought was way too much back and forth, one of them invited me to have . . . a phone call.

These men weren't my typical tech bros who'd invite me for a drink after four to six messages, engage in two to five dates, and then we'd mutually ghost. But we're breaking molds here, so I agreed to this date via teleconference. Here's how that went down. The quotes are the words I said out loud, the parenthesis are my thoughts along the way.

*Ring Ring*

Me: "Lisa Holden speaking!" (I'm a millennial, so I only use this feature of my phone for work purposes. I literally do not know how to answer a phone casually.)

Him: "Hey Lisa, it's GuyYourMomWantsYouToMarry, is now still a good time to chat?" (OK great, you're strangely formal on the phone, too.)

Me: "Yep! Great time to chat, I'm all yours!" (Honestly, I would never talk like this in person, why did I just invite this guy to . . . what? Have me? This is how you get taken.)

Him: "Cool, so, I guess the first thing I want to know is how you feel about dating? Are you dating lots of people or just one at a time? I ask because I want to find something real, and I think that's easier to do when you commit as soon as possible." (Sorry, did you just ask me to be exclusive ONE minute into this conference call? If so, I'm flattered, though I will definitely end up declining. But first, the people-pleaser in me will vaguely pretend I'm open to this for a while.)

And off we went, me chatting away about my theories on dating, how people have too many options out there to commit, and how someone who knows what they want is what I'm looking for, but too afraid to actually go for. He talked about what he likes to do and what lights him up, none of which overlapped with my interests. We ended the call after about 30 minutes and agreed to talk again soon. I was mortified I'd been so honest, so when he texted me asking about my passions I sent him a link to my work right here on POPSUGAR. I've found it's a surefire way to make sure a guy doesn't want to see you again because they fear they're going to get written about. Spoiler: few of them are interesting enough to write about.

Then, shockingly, he responded. He said he wanted to learn more and included the following quote from Rumi, "Set your life on fire and seek out those who fan the flames."

I'm not proud of this, but, I ghosted him.

Do I want someone who supports my creative endeavors? Of course I do. Did I have an iota of chemistry with this guy? Sadly, no. But I learned something important during this experiment about openness and intimacy. I never share my writing with guys I date because I'm afraid of scaring them off. What I learned is that not everyone is fearful of a woman who writes about love, and there are men out there with whom I could conceivably be myself. I ended up texting the guy a week later thanking him for the conversation and awesome quote, but gently saying I didn't see us as a match.

Final Thoughts

When I told my mom about it, her response was, "If you don't like him, do you think he's too young for me?" So as it turns out, Summer didn't find my soulmate, but maybe she wasn't really looking for me to begin with.

But as moms do, she taught me an important lesson. Hiding who you really are might feel safer in the dating world, but in the end, showcasing the truest parts of yourself on dates is a better way to go. Moving forward, I'll attempt to bring forth that honest, vulnerable side of myself that I get from Summer in the first place, and who knows, maybe I'll find someone who can deal with (or maybe even celebrates) dating a writer.
