Glee's Lauren Potter Has a Message For Hollywood on Hiring People With Down Syndrome: "You Won't Be Disappointed"

Lauren Potter grew up with one big dream: to become a successful actress in Hollywood. As a child with Down syndrome, she faced a lot of challenges on her way to the top, mainly people telling her she wouldn't make it. Her reaction? To just keep going. "I only listened to the people who told me I could," she told POPSUGAR when we recently chatted with her about Disability Employment Awareness Month, which is this October. "Don't ever give up your dreams, no matter how hard it is or how impossible it seems."

And Lauren was great at taking her own advice. In 2009, she landed the role of a lifetime when she was cast as cheerleader Becky Jackson on the hit show Glee, which she continued to star in until the series ended in 2015. Since then, the 28-year-old has also guest starred on shows like Veep and Switched at Birth, in addition to touring the country and giving motivational speeches at conferences across the US.

While she's searching for her next big role right now, she continues to do her part to raise awareness for people with disabilities - or "differently-abled" people - not only in Hollywood, but in every workforce. "Everyone I know with DS works hard and gives 100 percent of themselves," she told POPSUGAR. "We're all more alike than different!" To see what else she had to say about her impressive career path, her all-time favorite costar, and the best career advice she's ever gotten (hint: it came from Glee's Jane Lynch!), keep reading.

POPSUGAR: Growing up, how did you handle people telling you that you wouldn't be able to have the dream career you wanted?

Lauren Potter: I did have people that told me that I couldn't do certain things, so, as I always say, I only listened to those who told me I could. My parents told me I could do anything as long as I tried hard. My mom did tell me that acting would be hard, but also that I could do it!

PS: Did you always know you wanted to be an actress? How did you go about making your dreams come true?

LP: Yes, absolutely. I performed all the Disney movies for my family and friends, and I also knew all the Disney songs and dances. I don't sing well, but I love to sing a lot! I just knew I wanted to act. I started dance classes when I was 3 and just loved performing. I knew then that acting was the career for me.

PS: What's one obstacle you've overcome in your career that you're really proud of?

LP: I'm really proud that I have Down syndrome and have been able to grow as an actor and show the world that Down syndrome doesn't stop me, and that I think I've become a really good actor. And I think I have some part in opening the doors for other actors with disabilities.

PS: What's something you still struggle with?

LP: I sometimes struggle to overcome life's challenges to become who I want to be. I just want to be accepted for who I am, and to be like everyone else. I want people to know who I really am and who I will truly be. I'm working hard on becoming the best I can be. Right now, I struggle with getting back to work and having someone recognize what I've accomplished and giving me another chance in a great role.

PS: Was there ever a moment you thought you couldn't do it? If so, how did you push through that?

LP: I guess so, but I have a lot of people around me who tell me to get off my butt and try harder. I think I used to feel that way when I was younger, but I've grown up a lot and have learned to push through. I sometimes get discouraged when I have an audition and I don't get the part, but I know I just have to keep trying!

PS: What advice do you have for someone else with a disability who wants to have a career and follow their dreams?

LP: Well, don't ever give up your dreams, no matter how hard it is or how impossible it seems! I want all people with or without disabilities to follow their hearts, follow their paths, and never give up their dreams. I hope I am proof that it can happen!

PS: What advice would you give to your younger self who was just starting out in her career?

LP: I would tell myself not to be afraid or scared or nervous around others, and to always be my very best self. I think I was a little difficult when I was younger, and I wouldn't be like that again.

PS: What do you want employers to know about people with Down syndrome applying for jobs?

LP: Employers should know that they will not go wrong hiring a person with Down syndrome. Not only will they be helping someone reach their goal of working, but they and other employees will learn so much about acceptance and love. Everyone I know with DS works hard and gives 100 percent of themselves. We're all more alike than different!

PS: What are some misconceptions about people with disabilities in any type of workforce?

LP: I don't really know, but I guess maybe they think we can't do the job, or that it will take too much time to help us learn, but that just isn't true. When I was on Glee, I always knew my lines and everyone else's, too! I never held up filming because I wasn't ready. I worked very hard and was always on time.

PS: What's your favorite part about your job?

LP: I love being part of a cast and crew on set. I love acting, and even learning my lines. And of course, craft service isn't too bad either!

PS: What's your dream acting role?

LP: I love any kinds of acting roles. I'm really good at comedy, but I would also really like to do a dramatic role, but really I love everything. My dream role would be one that wasn't just for someone with Down syndrome, but a really good, strong role for a young woman who is just a good actor.

PS: What's the best career advice you've ever gotten?

LP: Jane Lynch who played Sue Sylvester on Glee once told me in the very beginning of filming when I was still scared: "I know you're new to this, but everything is OK. I'll be here if you want me to help you go over your lines, or just be your friend. You will be awesome." She was always there for me and helped me grow as an actor.

PS: You've had some really awesome roles in your career so far! What's been your favorite and why?

LP: Of Course, I would have to say Becky on Glee. That was so fun and in the six years I was on the show, they let me do some really fun things. There were some scary and dramatic things, too, like when Becky brought a gun to school. But also some really fun ones, like "The Rocky Horror Glee Show" episode, being Lady Gaga and Max the dog from Dr. Seuss' The Grinch, the secret service for Sue, and of course, Helen Mirren doing my voice over (are you kidding me!!!). It was so much fun, and I loved the cast and crew and Ryan, Ian, Brad, and Dante. I didn't want it to ever end!

PS: Who is your favorite actor/actress you've ever worked with? Why?

LP: I love, love, love Jane Lynch. She's so awesome and was always there for me. One of my favorite actors is John Stamos because he's so cute and hot and I LOVED him on Full House and Fuller House. When we worked together on Glee, they called me "Mrs. Stamos" on set because I had a huge crush on him, which was so funny.

PS: What's your advice for how directors/producers/casting directors can make the entertainment industry more diverse and inclusive?

LP: I always say, think outside of the box (my mom taught me that) and give us a chance. You will not be disappointed. I want to be seen as an actress first, then as a really good actress who happens to have Down syndrome. But just because you have DS or some other different ability, that doesn't make you a good actor, you have to work hard and prove you can do it. I just want to be seen as the best actor for the role because I've shown I have what it takes.

PS: Have you seen any changes over the years in how inclusive the entertainment industry has become for people with disabilities?

LP: That's a hard question for me, but I think shows like Glee have made a difference. I still think we need to have more chances, though, and there is still a lot of work to do.

PS: What do you feel is a common misconception people may have about people with disabilities? What do you want to say to people with those misconceptions?

LP: I think people think that we are different with different feelings, but we are WAY more alike than different. I want what everyone wants: to be accepted for me, to have friends, to love someone, and have someone love me, to live independently, to work at my career, to have family and friends around me, and to enjoy living my life.

PS: Who are your biggest role models? Why?

LP: My biggest role model is my mom because she's my number one fan. She's been an awesome and amazing mom, and she's my true friend and my true inspiration.

PS: What projects are you working on now?

LP: I've had a couple of auditions, which sadly I didn't get the roles, but right now I'm waiting for more work. I'm still speaking around the country to tell my story and fight against bullying. I'm waiting for that next great role, and I hope it's coming soon, because I'm SO ready!

These Adorable Panda Hand Warmers Will Make Typing So Cozy (and Cute!)

I'm pretty much cold year-round, but the second Fall hits I'm freezing, especially at the office. I often use my morning coffee as a hand warmer, but it doesn't last for long. 20 Minutes Is All You Need to Fall in Love With This White Chicken Chili Instant Pot Recipe

Who says chili always has to be made with ground beef and tomato sauce? There are so many varieties of chili you can make that can be just as delicious and possibly even lighter. I think white chicken is amazing to try in your chili. Not only is it a leaner cut of meat, but you can even play around with the flavor profile of the dish, too.

Even though this white chicken chili is a play on the American classic, by no means does that mean it is not as hearty and warm to the soul. It's packed with protein, fiber, and, of course, lots of spices. So the next time you want to cozy up to bowl of chili, try this one out, and maybe it'll be a new favorite of yours. Bring the whole family together for this Instant Pot recipe too; that's if you have it in your heart to share something so good.

Tom Hanks's David S. Pumpkins Skit on Saturday Night Live Never Gets Old

In 2016, Saturday Night Live debuted a new, memorable (and bizarre) character courtesy of Tom Hanks: David S. Pumpkins. While the skit was kooky, to say the least, it instantly became a hit with fans, sparking hilarious memes and quite a few memorable costumes. In honor of Halloween this month, we're throwing it back to the pumpkin-suit-wearing man from the "100 Floors of Frights" elevator ride. Relive David S. Pumpkins in all his glory in the video above.

Travis Scott and Drake Release the "Sicko Mode" Music Video, and It's Absolutely . . . Sick

Since Travis Scott released his album Astroworld back in August, fans have been bopping their heads and singing along to his five-minute, multidimensional song "Sicko Mode" with Drake. It's their third collaboration together, and probably the most talked-about song from Scott's third studio album. So, it only made sense that when the music video was announced to drop on Friday, the rapper shared on Twitter that he was so hyped-up, he stayed awake all night just to see the release. "BRUH IM STILL UP. WAITING ON SICKO MODE TO DROP. IM ON MY 7th CAFFEINE SIP. IVE WATCH 4 WES ANDERSON MOVIES. CAN 9 am COME FAST ENOUGH," Scott tweeted in the early morning hours.

After watching the video, we really don't blame him - the visuals for "Sicko Mode" are unquestionably sick. While it doesn't feature his girlfriend Kylie Jenner like Scott's "Stop Trying to Be God" video, we get Drake, Scott's hometown of Houston, lots of dancing, and even some trippy visuals, and that's more than we ever ask for. Watch the mesmerizing video above, and since you're already turned up, check out 2018's sexiest rap videos here.

Ariana Grande Breaks Her Silence Following Pete Davidson Split: "It's Very Sad"

Ariana Grande is taking a break from the spotlight after ending her engagement with Pete Davidson. On Tuesday, the 25-year-old singer posted a now-deleted message on her Instagram story, telling her fans that she would be stepping away for a little bit. We're wishing Ariana all the best as she takes time to focus on herself!

Say Goodbye to "Harlem's Hero" - Marvel's Luke Cage Has Been Canceled After 2 Seasons

Get ready to say goodbye to another Marvel show. After canceling Iron Fist last week, Netflix has decided to cancel Luke Cage after two seasons. "Unfortunately, Marvel's Luke Cage will not return for a third season," Netflix and Marvel said in a joint statement to The Hollywood Reporter. "Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem's Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series." According to THR, the cancellation was due to "creative differences and the inability to agree to terms for a third season of the show."

Even though we won't get to see Mike Colter as Luke Cage anytime soon, there are still a few Marvel shows on Netflix to binge-watch. While Jessica Jones was renewed for season three in April, Daredevil released its third season on Oct. 19, and a second season of The Punisher is expected to drop sometime in 2019.

Get All the Details on Channing Tatum and Jessie J's Under-the-Radar Romance

Channing Tatum and Jessie J are keeping their romance low-key. According to People, the couple are "spending time together," but they want their relationship to remain out of the spotlight. "[Channing] works around the clock, loves being a dad, and has a decent relationship with Jenna [Dewan]," a source told the outlet. "Jessie J is also dedicated to her career and has a real sense of humor. She likes to have a good time. It is an exciting time for both of them."

News that Channing and Jessie are dating first broke earlier this month. However, the two have reportedly been seeing each other for a couple of months now. Channing is apparently smitten by Jessie's voice and loves watching her perform. "He loves music, likes to dance, and loves the whole performing aspect of his own career," the insider added. "It's a new thing for them and too early to see if it will go anywhere, but for now they are having fun and getting to know each other."

Jenna has also reportedly moved on and is "just fine" with Channing's new relationship.

Maisie Williams Just Gave Us a Hint About Arya's "Beautiful" Final Scene in Game of Thrones

Maisie Williams has filmed her final scene for season eight of Game of Thrones, and it sounds like her character Arya Stark is going to have a lonely ending. In an interview with The Guardian Williams gave us a little inkling about Stark's fate when the series ends. Williams called the scene "beautiful," also adding, "I ended on the perfect scene. I was alone – shocker! Arya's always bloody alone."

Could this mean Arya will actually be completely alone in Westeros at the show's conclusion? Does an epic battle take place in which Arya comes out as the sole victor? It's hard to say for sure. But one thing we know for sure is that the character has had a tremendous impact on Williams.

She remembered filming the scene, saying, "I was alone and I had watched a lot of other people wrap. I knew the drill, I had seen the tears and heard the speeches." She went on to say that her own speech "wasn't something I planned, but in that moment I realized what the show meant to me."

Many of the cast members and those involved with the show have managed to remain tight-lipped about the eighth and final season, but we at least still have some details about the upcoming episodes to hold us over until the series premieres in 2019.

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom Make a Rare (Yet Very Glamorous) Public Appearance Together

A month after making their red carpet debut as a couple, Orlando Bloom stepped out to support Katy Perry at the amfAR Gala in LA on Thursday night. Katy, who stunned in a beautiful blue feathered gown, was honored for her continued support of The Foundation of AIDS Research. Even though Katy and Orlando didn't walk the red carpet together, they sat together inside and mingled with Katy's pals, including Robert Pattinson and designer Jeremy Scott. The star-studded event also featured appearances from Heidi Klum, Sarah Hyland, Leslie Mann, and Judd Apatow.

Katy and Orlando first met at a children's charity event back in 2013 and have been dating on and off since 2016. Here's How Prince Harry Reacted When a Fan Photoshopped Princess Diana Over Charles and Camilla

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are days into their first joint tour of Australia, and between their royal wedding in May and the recent announcement of Meghan's pregnancy, they've basically been getting gifts thrown at them left and right. But during a visit to Bondi Beach on Friday, the duke and duchess were approached by a fan who handed Harry a card featuring his late mother, Princess Diana, Photoshopped into a portrait from Prince Louis's christening in July. Us Weekly reported that Harry "seemed genuinely touched by the gesture," adding that he and Meghan thanked the fan and read the card together "while she rubbed his back."

The original photo was taken after Prince Louis's christening ceremony, and includes Harry and Meghan posing with Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and baby Louis, as well as Harry's father Prince Charles and stepmother Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. Coincidentally, the fan who Photoshopped Diana into the image did so after removing Charles and Camilla, who famously married in 2005 after carrying on an affair during his marriage to Diana. Harry was just 12 years old when she died in 1997, and there's no doubt that seeing his mom in a photo with his new wife brought on some emotions.

During their stop on Bondi Beach, Harry spoke to the importance of opening up about emotions, and earlier in the week, Harry gave a powerful speech about mental health during a rainy appearance in Dubbo, Australia. The prince has been open about his own struggles with mental health over the years, which he acknowledged intensified after Diana's tragic death.

Meghan Markle's Inspiring Speech to a Group of Girls Deserves to Be Framed Everywhere

Meghan Markle is living a real-life fairy tale now that she's a British royal, but that wasn't always the case. During her visit to Sydney's Macarthur Girls High School with Prince Harry on Friday, the Duchess of Sussex told the students that her first job required her to take out the garbage. Meghan used to work at a frozen yogurt store called Humphrey Yogart, and her former boss, Paula Sheftel, previously told the Sunday Times that she earned minimum wage and was "very popular with customers."

Meghan also told the students that the job helped shape her into the woman she is today. "You guys all remind me so much of myself when I was growing up," she told the girls. "I went to an all-girls school, which was incredibly diverse as well. I think being around such empowered young women, it becomes something that you all just grasp onto to understand your world. It makes me so emotional. You're doing really, really good work and I'm so happy that we're here. We give you our full support." Harry also chimed in and told the students that men should use their voices as well to fight for equality. "Men can help as well by getting involved, we have to," the royal said.

Meghan and Harry's latest stop was a part of the royal couple's 16-day tour of Australia and included students who are involved with the In League in Harmony youth advocate program, which aims to unite and inspire young people to be advocates for cohesion and inclusion in their communities.

Love Escape Rooms? You'll Never Go in One Again After Watching This Horror Movie Trailer

At this point in your life, you've likely experienced one of those escape room attractions, in which you're locked in a themed room and given one hour to find hidden clues that will help you unlock the door before time runs out. But what if the stakes were real? What if your life depended on getting out of that room in time? That's the premise of the upcoming horror movie Escape Room, from Insidious: The Last Key director Adam Robitel.

The psychological thriller follows six strangers - including Insecure's Jay Ellis and Daredevil's Deborah Ann Woll - who are lured into an immersive, high-tech, deadly escape room with the promise of a $1 million prize if they can get out of the property alive. Gradually, and horrifyingly, they discover their wits are the only things standing between them and things like: being cooked alive, freezing to death in an icy pond, and nightmarish hallucinations.

Sounds fun, right? Watch the trailer above before it hits theaters in January.

There's a New, Stripped-Down Version of Aretha Franklin Singing "Silent Night" - Cue the Tears

It's almost time to set sights on the holiday season, and who better to usher us in than Aretha Franklin? Though the powerful icon passed away in August, one of her old Christmas covers has been newly released, with an incredible twist. Franklin originally recorded the "Silent Night" rendition back in 2008 with full orchestration and background vocals. This new version is much more simple: just a piano and the undeniable power of our late Queen of Soul. The stripped-down version will be included on an upcoming vinyl issue of Franklin's holiday-themed album, This Christmas. Listen above and let her dream voice carry you away.

Someone Turned The Nun Into a Sexy Halloween Costume, and Now I'm Hyperventilating

After The Nun made its theatrical debut in early September, it was pretty much inevitable that people would look to the film's titular character for Halloween costume inspiration within the weeks to come. You've probably already seen a few spot-on viral makeup tutorials inspired by the movie floating around on YouTube, but this Reddit user took things to a whole new level on Thursday when she shared a photo of herself sporting a sexed-up version of the creepy costume. I honestly can't decide if I'm terrified or impressed. Maybe both?

The user, who goes by Crispypumpkin on Reddit, put the costume together using what appears to be your average sexy nun costume, which you can probably pick up from any Halloween costume retailer, like Party City. She, of course, wore the ghoulish makeup from the film (which is also probably the sole reason why you've been having nonstop nightmares for the last month) and accessorized her outfit with wide fishnet tights and red patent-leather, platform pumps. It's honestly the perfect ensemble for anyone who wants to get into a club for free before 11 p.m. while still having time to terrorize a family of five.

Whether this makes you consider adding the piece to your list of potential Halloween costumes or not, at least it'll give you something else to think about instead of those terrifying trailers for the movie.

Treat Your New iPhone XR to 1 of These Dazzling, Delightfully Fun Cases - She'll Love It

What is a brand-new iPhone without a brand-new stylish and durable case to go with it?

In September, Apple unveiled its latest lineup of new iPhones - the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR. Available for preorder beginning Oct. 19, the iPhone XR doesn't have as many bells and whistles as the XS and XS Max, but it does have its perks, like more color options (black, white, yellow, red, blue, and coral) and a lower price point.

Even as the more affordable option, it's still an investment, so you want to keep it protected. Finding the perfect case can be tough, especially in the early days of a phone release, but the last thing you want is to break your new phone because you couldn't find a case. To help you out, we've rounded up the best-looking cases that are perfect to dress your new iPhone XR up in. Check them out ahead.

10 Urban Outfitters Tech Gadgets That Are a Blast From the Past

Throughout recent years we have witnessed many different comebacks - from those on the television screen (hello, Will and Grace) to those in fashion (like the resurgence of '80s sportswear and '90s scrunchies). However, one of our favorite blasts from the past may be the one involving tech gadgets. Princess phones, cassette players, CD players, and vintage Polaroid cameras are all re-emerging, and we are so excited for it.

Many of these tech gadgets from yesterday can be found at Urban Outfitters, which is kind of bonkers but awesome. It has a whole section dedicated to audio and cassette, so you can pick up your boombox or tape recorder all in one place, and it also has other amazing tech goodies, like clear CD players and pastel pink corded phones. How to Make Your Own "Memoji": The Coolest New Feature of iOS 12

"Be yourself or whoever you want to be." That's Apple's latest mantra when it comes to the coolest new feature of iOS 12, Memoji.

Memoji stem from Animoji, which are the animated characters that use the iPhone's front facing TrueDepth camera system to create cartoon caricatures that mimic the user's expressions. Memoji follow the same concept of Animoji, but instead of a panda, a unicorn, or even a pile of poop, you get to design and create a human character that looks just like you - or, however you want it to look.

Limited only to iPhones with the TrueDepth camera system, such as the iPhone X and soon-to-be released XS, XS Max, and XR models, older iPhones are unable to use the new and exciting feature, but can still receive them in the form of a photograph or video.

Memoji are customizable in just about every way, with Apple giving users the option to choose from a variety of skin tones and hair colors, as well as the ability to alter a character's head shape, eyes, nose, lips, and more. Plus, users also have the option to dress their Memoji up in items such as hats or glasses.

Creating a Memoji is done in the Messages app, and is super fun and simple. Check out the photo gallery ahead for a how-to, and then let your imagination run wild when you create your very own Memoji in iOS 12.

Every Single Guest Dressed as a Disney Character at This Picture-Perfect Wedding

I don't care if your heart is as frozen as Elsa's castle - it's about to melt into a puddle of emotions when you see the lengths this couple went to to throw their ultimate Disney dream wedding. Garrett and Jason, aka Woody and Buzz, went all out with their Disney-themed big day, and no detail was ignored. The best part? Every single guest (including their dog) dressed in costume as a different Disney character. Honestly, we can't get over it. And coming in at a close second in our books is the themed tablescapes, each based on a different Disney movie (complete with VHS tape).

Garrett and Jason met at a friend's New Year's Eve party, and what they didn't know until their wedding day was that Garrett's parents and grandparents also met on New Year's Eve! It was meant to be. Here's what else Jason told us about their big Disney day. See all the photos (including their sweet wedding video!) ahead!

POPSUGAR: What was your favorite decorative or event detail of the day?

Jason: Probably the table decorations we made by hand. We obsessed over every detail for the past year. We used those classic Disney VHS clamshells to signify the table name and theme. We chose the VHS clamshells since we both had them and watched them so much they got wore out when we were kids. For the newer movies that were never released on VHS (such as Moana and Up), I designed the VHS covers for them. Each table had elements from the movie; it looked like the movie came to life on the table. There was at least one light-up or glow-in-the-dark element at each table to make it extra magical.

Another one of our favorite parts is our choreographed first dance. It was arranged and instructed by our great friend Alesha Bales, who weaved together a jazz version of "You've Got a Friend in Me" with a Spanish version of the song. She mixed elements from foxtrot, salsa, tango, and paso doble into the dance.

POPSUGAR: What was the most emotional moment of the day?

Jason: The ceremony, because Garrett cried, and he never does that! During our ceremony we had a mixing of the mai tai to signify the good, the bad, and all that comes with a marriage. We went with a mai tai since we love tiki drinks and we travel the country visiting tiki bars. The mai tai was also our signature drink for the wedding.

POPSUGAR: What inspired the overall look and theme of the wedding?

Jason: We had both been fans of Disney and Disney parks growing up. Garrett would frequently visit his friends who worked in the park, while I was inspired by the artists and Imagineers who influenced me to pursue a career in graphic design. But it wasn't until our first trip together to Disneyland that the love for Disney became more of an obsession.

POPSUGAR: Why did you decide to do Disney costumes?

Jason: We love Halloween, and we throw an elaborate themed party every year. We also enjoy Disneybounding and cosplay at Comic-Con. Family and friends must have thought we were crazy to have a costume wedding in the middle of August. But we were happily surprised that most all of our guests were really into it and dressed for the occasion, even our dog!

Garrett wanted to dress as Buzz and Woody because "You've Got a Friend in Me" is one of his favorite Disney songs, and he has known for a long time he wanted that to be the song he danced to as his first dance. So, of course, I had to be Sheriff Woody. Both characters are reminiscent of each of our personalities.

This Couple Transformed a Dated Trailer Into a Dreamy Vacation Home on Wheels

Brianne, an RN, and Sean Walker, a firefighter and photographer, are a married couple living in San Diego with their three young children, and they also happen to be wizards when it comes to flipping trailers. Seriously, when you see how the Walkers transformed a "dark and stinky" RV into a bright and beautiful space that's both stylish and functional for a family of five, you'll be left asking, "When can I move in?" But as they'll attest, there was no magic involved, just a design-savvy vision and a helluva lot of elbow grease.

I asked the Walkers to share the story of how they got interested in renovating trailers (this isn't their first rodeo), what challenges they faced during the process of updating this one, the smart small-space tricks they incorporated, and their advice for anyone brave enough to take on fixing up a vacation home on wheels. Ahead, read what they told POPSUGAR via email, and see all the before and after photos of this mind-blowing renovation!

A Calorie Comparison of Your Favorite Beers

If you're watching your waistline and enjoying an ice-cold brew, then might want to do a little research and how beers compare (or you might just want to sit back and enjoy your IPA, in that case no need to read further). The calorie counts may surprise you. Here's the nutritional info for one glass, can, or bottle of beer (about 12 ounces). Keep in mind that even though there may be health benefits associated with drinking alcohol, they only come with drinking in moderation. For women, that means one drink a day.

There's an Antibiotic-Resistant Salmonella That Contaminated Chicken in 29 States

The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed on Oct. 17 that they were investigating an antibiotic-resistant salmonella outbreak linked to raw chicken products. So far, 92 people were reported to be infected from 29 states.

The report revealed that the effected people reported eating different types and brands of chicken products that were bought from different locations. Some of the reported foods that tested positive for the outbreak strain include raw chicken pet food, raw chicken products, and live chickens. The CDC also conducted antibiotic-resistance testing and found that the strain of salmonella in the chicken is resistance to multiple antibiotics.

Of the 21 people who have been hospitalized, no one has died. But, the CDC did note in their investigation that since this salmonella strain was present in live chickens and many types of raw chicken products, "It might be widespread in the chicken industry."

Fortunately, the CDC is not saying consumers need to avoid chicken altogether; properly stored and cooked chicken should be fine. Rather, it's a great reminder to handle raw chicken carefully and cook it thoroughly to prevent food poisoning. Some tips they listed to prevent food poisoning include:

  • Wash your hands
  • Cook raw chicken thoroughly to kill harmful germs
  • Don't spread germs from raw chicken around food preparation areas
  • The CDC does not recommend feeding raw diets to pets

Some symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps 12 to 72 hours after being exposed, and it usually lasts four to seven days with most people recovering without treatment. However, in some cases, diarrhea may be so severe that it requires hospitalization. If a young child, older adult, or person with a weakened immune system gets salmonella, they should see a doctor if they have any of the following symptoms: bloody stools, dehydration, or an ongoing high fever, according to WebMD.

The 1 Move Every Woman Should Do (and It's Not Squats)

There's one word in the world of fitness that millions of women have grown to truly loathe: squats. Just saying it can elicit shrieks from some of the most mentally tough women around. So let's discuss one move every fit woman needs to do in the gym - and it's not squatting. In fact, the single most important exercise to master today for improved fitness, strength, and overall health is the deadlift.

After years of hearing nothing but "squat, squat, squat" from your trainer, you might be confused. The deadlift is similar to the squat in that it forces you to use many muscle groups simultaneously. More muscles worked means more lean muscle and less fat in the long run so that's a win for both squat and deadlifts. The added benefit with the deadlift is that it uses even more muscles in each rep. While the squat is great for your lower body, the deadlift forces your arms and upper body to work too.

Want another reason? According to Toronto-based personal trainer Nathane Jackson, CSCS, author of Nathane Jackson's Whole Health Revolution (coming later in 2016), the deadlift is also the safer option. So, it's safer and works more muscles - we're all in, but how the heck do you do one properly? We covered the basics right here, but because it can be a hard move to truly master (just look at the folks doing them wrong at your local gym), we asked Jackson to pass along some pointers.

First, opt for a bar instead of dumbbells - even if you've got no weight on the bar - to ensure that your grip stays steady and you aren't waving your arms to move the weight. Then you should point your toes straight ahead or slightly outwards. From there, Jackson told us that you should "create a double chin, by pulling the chin back towards your neck and pull your shoulder blades back and down towards the hips and pretend you are squeezing an orange in your arm pits." The next step is the key in the movement: "Simultaneously hinge at the hips and bend at the knees until both hands are gripping the bar (overhand, hook grip) just outside the shins. From here, push through the mid foot and think about driving the hips forward as you stand up straight. Exhale (like you mean it - it's OK to make noise in the gym!) once the bar travels past your knees, being careful not to lean back."

If you nail the deadlift like this and keep it in your regular weekly routine, you'll find that you're sculpting your lower and upper body, while getting stronger and leaner all over. Sounds like it's a good time to do some deadlifts. You can thank us later. Enjoy!

How 1 App Helped Alex Lose Her First 70 Pounds, Without Ever Setting Foot in a Gym

If 25-year-old Alex Baca were to give advice to anyone trying to lose it weight, she'd keep it super simple: "Track your food." It was tracking everything she ate on an app called Lose It! that jump-started her weight loss and led her to shed 125 pounds since February 2017.

Alex was fresh out of college and nearing the 350-pound mark when she hit a turning point. "It had been years since I'd looked at the scale, and I was in shock. I was depressed after college, couldn't find a job, and was unsure of what was next for me. I knew if there was going to be a time for me to make a major lifestyle change, the time would be now," she told POPSUGAR.

She started with only tracking her food and cutting out everything processed. About eight months later, after losing more than 70 pounds, she began adding in workouts and found out that the gym isn't such a scary place and can even be fun. Since starting her weight-loss journey, Alex has learned a lot about meal-prepping and creating healthy recipes - and now she's helping her friends too. "I've started virtually meal prepping for friends now by creating grocery lists and recipes for the week for them and cheering them on through Lose It!, as part of their daily motivation," she said.

Keep reading for more about Alex's weight loss and to find out exactly what she keeps stocked in her kitchen to satisfy all her cravings.

It's Easier Than You Think to Take Too Much Allergy and Cold Medicine - Here's Why

It's a heck of a time when allergy season and cold season overlap. If you happen to be one of the unfortunate souls in this sniffly Venn diagram from hell, you'd likely do anything to find relief. Fortunately, you won't have to go much further than your medicine cabinet, but before you do, be sure to read this advice from Erica Patel, MD, of the University of Southern California, about whether it's safe to take allergy meds and cold meds simultaneously.

Because symptoms are similar for colds and allergies, you don't necessarily have to double down. "Many over-the-counter (OTC) cough and cold medicines and allergy medicines may have similar ingredients," Dr. Patel noted, including a pain and fever reducer, a decongestant (for stuffiness), an antihistamine (for sneezing), and a cough reliever. But that means it's also easy to overdo it.

"A good way to avoid overdosing on ingredients is to compare labels," she told POPSUGAR. "For example, if one medication has acetaminophen as an ingredient, then avoid taking other medications with acetaminophen in them." Common cold and allergy medication ingredients include:

  • Pain relievers: acetaminophen or ibuprofen
  • Decongestants: phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine, oxymetazoline
  • Cough Suppressants: dextromethorphan, guaifenesin
  • Antihistamines: diphenhydramine (Benadryl), loratadine (Claritin), cetirizine (Zyrtec), fexofenadine (Allegra)

Think carefully about what you actually need. "Only take medication that directly treats the symptoms you are having," Dr. Patel said. "If you have a cough, for example, then just take a cough suppressant. Don't choose a combination medication that also has a decongestant and a pain reliever if you don't also have those symptoms." That's especially true if you're already taking something that helps keep those symptoms at bay, like an allergy pill.

That said, you can safely take cold and allergy medications simultaneously if you ensure there's no overlap and check the labels for any contraindications. (That's when the package says, "Don't take this if you're also taking ___.") If neither is the case, "it should be relatively safe to take cold and allergy medication together as long as you're following the dosing instructions on the package," said Dr. Patel. *breathes sigh of relief*
