Prince Harry Shares a Deeply Personal Moment With a Widow After Climbing Sydney Harbour Bridge
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's tour of Australia is more than just receiving gifts and praise from adoring fans. It's also about getting the chance to connect with people on a personal level, which is precisely what Prince Harry did on Friday when he scaled the Sydney Harbour Bridge alongside Australia's Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Invictus Games competitors. One of those competitors who joined the Duke of Sussex in climbing the bridge was 41-year-old Gwen Cherne, who lost her husband and Australian special forces officer Peter J. Cafe to suicide in February 2017.
Harry and Gwen spoke for about 10 minutes about a number of topics, including the experiences of loss and grief. Harry, who lost his mother, Princess Diana, at the age of 12, comforted Gwen while they talked. "He understood what I meant. When you understand loss, I think it's obvious," Gwen said in an interview with People. "He did ask me if I was getting the support I need from the Defense and ex-servicemen and veteran community."
Gwen, who is an adviser for widows, veterans, and families for the Australian Department of Veterans Affairs and an Invictus Games Ambassador, also noted that when Harry's entourage tried to get him to keep walking, Harry refused to leave. "He stopped and said, 'I'm in a middle of a conversation, and I'm not going to leave this.' We were talking about my story and mental health and how difficult it is still, in our society, to talk about grief and loss and suicide," she said. "And how important things like the Invictus Games are to shedding light on, and allowing people to start to have these conversations that are great to have."
Harry also asked Gwen about her three children, Emily, Lachlan, and Tom, and how they've all been coping. "Lachlan is the spitting image of my husband. Harry said something like the children must remind you of him, or live on in him," Gwen said. "And I said my son is so much like him. It was comfortable and thoughtful."

Prince Harry Shared an Intimate Confession About Mental Health During an Australia Tour Stop
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have given us more swoon-worthy moments on the first leg of their 16-day tour of Australia than we can handle. Between their pregnancy announcement, Harry adorably dancing when a fan played their wedding song, and even Harry reinventing the art of hand-holding with not one, but two hands, it's safe to say the bar has been set pretty, pretty high for #relationshipgoals. Not only has their PDA been off the charts, but the royal couple is getting open and honest throughout these meaningful appearances.
While in Bondi Beach on Friday, Meghan and Harry spent time with OneWave, a local surfing non-profit group focused on mental health issues and the power of "saltwater therapy." They were greeted with leis and sat in an "anti bad vibe circle" with the group to share their own stories. According to People, Prince Harry opened up about his own mental health struggles and the importance of fluid conversations.
"Basically he showed us that actually opening up and talking about your emotions is a sign of strength, not a sign of weakness," one of the OneWave co-founders told the publication. "And the sooner you can do that, it actually helps you so much. That was the thing that helped him so much . . . He shared what he's learned along the way, how powerful it is, just community and people helping people. And just being there to look out for each other. And talking."
Since losing his mother, Princess Diana, at just 12 years old, Prince Harry has been open about his battles with difficult times. In fact, just a few days prior, he spoke to a group of people in Dubbo about how important it is to speak up. "Asking for help was one of the best decisions that I ever made," he told the group. "You will be continually amazed at how life changes for the better."
He helped his pregnant wife take off her black espadrilles, he exposed a vulnerable side to himself in front of strangers, and he still couldn't help but look at Meghan like the frickin' heart-eye emoji. Their love is just too pure. Read on to see some of the gorgeous and emotion-infused photos from their time on Bondi Beach, and keep up with all tour moments that prove Meghan and Harry are going to make the best parents.
Prepare For Judgment, Because Papa Legba Is Returning to American Horror Story
As American Horror Story: Apocalypse continues, it seems more and more like the mythology and characters of Coven are going to be the keys to however the story ends up resolving. We've already seen the return of several Coven faves, including the rescue of Queenie by the Antichrist Michael and the gradual weakening of the Supreme, Cordelia. There's a new line of mythology that has introduced warlocks and the concept of a male Supreme or "Alpha." Plus, there's a new witch on the block: Mallory, whose powers have frightened even Michael Langdon and who, some theorize, might be the linchpin to it all. There's one more Coven character who's on his way to join the apocalypse: Papa Legba.
Where You've Seen Him Before
Papa Legba first appeared as part of Coven's voodoo-tinged storyline. He's the gatekeeper of the spirit world and "collects" souls at all costs, often by making shady bargains with mortals and using his power to "teach them a lesson," as he might say. Although he does condemn some souls to their own personal hells, he also has the ability to send them to a positive afterlife. In Coven, he appears to remind voodoo priestess Marie of the bargain they had made and the souls she owed him. Fiona Goode also tries to make a bargain with him, but he refuses on the grounds that she has no soul to bargain with in the first place. He takes delight in Marie's death without fulfilling her end of the bargain and tells her that he owns her soul, but he's not pure evil: he explains the rules of the afterlife to Queenie and warns her to leave before it's unsafe. He also shows mercy on Nan, a murdered witch, and takes her to an afterlife "full of treats."
His Real Roots
Papa Legba is based on the Loa, a shadowy spirit belonging to the Haitian voodoo tradition. Like his American Horror Story depiction, the traditional Papa Legba is an intermediary between the spirit world and humanity, where he is the arbiter of who may and may not speak to the spirits of the afterlife. AHS gave him the additional powers of being the actual gatekeeper of the afterlife and passing final judgment on souls. This is an important distinction: in Haitian voodoo lore, Papa Legba is a facilitator of communication and understanding who is viewed mostly positively, not a demon of the spiritual crossroads.
Who Plays Him
Actor Lance Reddick is no stranger to the realm of genre television, with two J.J. Abrams series under his belt. As series regular Agent Phillip Broyles on Fringe, Reddick was definitely one of the good guys. But on Lost, he played Matthew Abaddon, a sinister character whose name alluded to an angel of death - a perfect precursor to his creepy role in the AHS universe.
Britney Spears Is Doing Backflips While Listening to Justin Timberlake - What Year Is It Again?
It's plain to see, Britney Spears has got moves, but did you think her music motivation would be her ex Justin Timberlake? Color me surprised. A decade and a half after the iconic Hollywood couple split, Britney spent her Saturday doing flips in the outdoors, and Justin's song "LoveStoned/I Think She Knows Interlude" from FutureSex/LoveSounds played in the background.
Despite a rocky breakup between the two pop sensations back in the early 2000s, and multiple songs written about each other (possibly including this one!), it looks like Britney's ready to let bygones be bygones. She recently revealed she'd be up for a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse reunion, and now she's even listening to JT's greatest hits. The ball's in your court now, Justin. Make the right move for all the '90s teens out there.
If You Thought Chivalry Was Dead, Harry Helping Meghan With Her Shoes Should Change That
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are keeping the cute moments coming! After touching down in Sydney, Australia, on Friday, the couple arrived at Bondi Beach, where they met up with OneWave, a local surfing community group that raises awareness for mental health. In addition to Meghan and Harry being welcomed with leis, the couple looked so happy as they walked on the beach hand in hand.
Things got even cuter, though, when Harry showed off his chivalrous side and assisted Meghan with taking off her shoes. As the duchess untied her black espadrille wedges, Meghan handed one of the shoes to Harry so she could free her hands and remove the other one. Between this and Meghan holding Harry's umbrella, these two have officially succeeded in melting us into a giant puddle of mush.

There are weddings, and then there are Halloween-themed weddings. Same, but different . . . in the best ways! And what makes this wedding even more fun? With intricate Halloween decor transforming its backyard setting, a chuppah built by the bride's father, and a handmade wedding dress by the bride herself, this wedding was one like never before.
The bride and groom, Melanie and Craig, met at an event for the video game World of Warcraft about 10 years ago. "Of the hundred-thousand people, we happened to be at the same place at the same time when the enemy faction came to raid the quest area we were in. We both ended up hiding under an overturned boat waiting for them to leave. Serendipity? Fate? Luck? We don't know, but life certainly has a sense of humor," the bride said.
The wedding took place at the groom's sister's beautiful 200-year-old home, which was intricately decorated in goo and gore for the Halloween-inspired festivity. Everything from bloody skulls and skeletal limbs to pumpkins of all sizes adorned the venue. And to complete the theme, the flower girl carried a cauldron full of petals. The whole wedding was absolutely boo-tiful! Get all the Halloween feels with these spooky (and romantic) photos ahead.

This wedding shoot will bring out your inner child and looks absolutely magical.

The Duchess of Sussex has already broken out the deep shade of blue in several different outfits for her 16-day trip with husband Prince Harry, and it's clearly a favorite color, as she dug into her own fashion archives for her Invictus Games Opening Ceremonies ensemble.
While Meghan kept things casual at the Jaguar Land Rover Driving Challenge earlier in the day, she opted for a navy Stella McCartney cape dress for the couple's night out at the Sydney Opera House. This is the same gown she wore to Queen Elizabeth's birthday festivities, so you know it's a special one. Meghan Markle’s Invictus Games Style Shows Us That Some Sunglasses Will Always Be Classic
The Invictus Games hold a special place in Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's relationship, and the royals made their return as part of their 16-day South Pacfic tour. Meghan kept things casual for the occasion, and her taste in accessories quickly reminded us of her outfit for last year's games.
Harry and Meghan made their public debut as a couple during the 2017 Invictus Games, and we fell in love with their relationship and her laid-back look. Now, a whole year later at the Jaguar Land Rover Driving Challenge, Meghan proved that her picks are timeless - she can rock tortoiseshell sunglasses any day of the week. The Duchess of Sussex opted for an Illesteva pair ($240), which she teamed with a White Altuzarra blazer, Tabitha Simmons pumps ($695), Mother Denim jeans ($196), Ecksand stackable rings, and of course, her Invictus Games button-up top. Check out more photos of her full outfit below, including some up close snaps of her classic and sophisticated shades.

Prince Harry's Mysterious Black Ring Has Everyone Perplexed - Here's What It Really Means
Being part of the royal family means every stylistic choice you make is put under a magnifying glass. When Meghan Markle wore her hair in a ponytail instead of her usual bun, people immediately took notice of her rare 'do. When Sarah Ferguson wore an enormous gold bow on her hat while attending her daughter's royal wedding, onlookers went so far as to compare it to the Golden Snitch from Harry Potter. And when Prince Harry randomly slipped a new ring on his right hand while touring Australia, the entire internet exploded into a tizzy trying to figure out what it meant and where it came from.
The Duke of Sussex has been wearing a simple gold wedding band on his left hand since he married Meghan back in May, but when he and his wife arrived in the land down under, eagle-eyed royal family fanatics promptly spotted his new bling. A thick metallic black band, Harry's new piece of jewelry brought about tons of questions. Is it a gift from Meghan to celebrate her pregnancy? Does it somehow pertain to the upcoming Invictus Games in Sydney? Is he simply trying to step up his street style game?
Has anyone figured out what/where Harry's new ring has come from?
- Cocoa Sneeze (@SneezeCocoa) October 17, 2018
Does anyone know why or since when Prince Harry has worn the black ring on his right hand? It looks to be another wedding band.
- royallymegan (@royallymegan) October 17, 2018
So what's the ring on Harry's right hand? It looks like one of those rubber ones to me. What's it for? https://t.co/jNjsmJgohf
- Loving The Royals (@lovingtheroyals) October 15, 2018
Well, wonder no more, because we found out the answer, and it's actually pretty surprising. Harry's sleek ring is - drumroll, please - a sleep and activity tracker, People reports. The so-called Oura Ring keeps tabs on your daily sleep schedule and movements throughout the day via an app, helping you achieve optimal performance. It retails at $299 and comes in four different colors.
Look at Harry, being a beacon of health while simultaneously making a fashion statement! *Swoons* I mean, we can hardly blame him for wanting to get a good night's rest during his whirlwind 16-day tour in Australia with Meghan. Ahead, check out a few snaps of the Duke of Sussex sporting his new bling, and keep reading to shop the Oura Ring for yourself if you'd like to track your sleep in style, just like Harry.
We Love Hailey Baldwin's Combat Boots Like She Loves Bieber, and That's a Lot
Hailey Baldwin's past few appearances with her reported hubby Justin Bieber have been relaxed and street style cool. Hailey's mixing Fall staples, like sweaters and denim jackets, with athleisure, and her looks are normally grounded with combat boots, this House of Holland pair ($490) in particular. They're instantly noticeable no matter what else she's wearing, mostly because of the multicolor, electric laces and braided strap across the front of the shoe.
While we've been on the combat kick alongside Hailey for awhile, she's sparking the shopping itch. We're wondering if Fall is just the right time to invest in a pair with standout details, rather than sticking to our neutral-toned leather iterations. Ahead, read on to see how Hailey put her footwear on full display in tapered nylon jogging pants, a strawberry cropped sweater, and cropped denim jacket, then shop for some similar boots that really pack a punch if you're a '90s girl with edge.

Meghan Markle Wore Princess Diana's Jewelry For Her First Outing After Pregnancy Announcement
It's quite a busy time for the Duchess of Sussex. On the heels of Meghan Markle's pregnancy announcement with husband Prince Harry, the pair stepped out in Australia on Oct. 15 to kick off their first royal tour as a married couple. Meghan chose a sophisticated Karen Gee dress for the occasion, fittingly called the "Blessed Dress," and gave a heartwarming nod to Princess Diana with her jewelry selection.
Zoom in on a picture of Meghan strolling through the Admiralty House in Sydney and you may notice her elegant gold and diamond butterfly earrings. This pair actually once belonged to Diana, who wore them back in 1986 during a visit to Canada. Meghan also wore a gold bracelet from Diana's personal collection - how sweet!
While Meghan sadly never had the chance to meet Harry's mom, they've kept her memory close throughout their relationship. Meghan's engagement ring famously features two diamonds from Diana's personal collection, and Harry claims if his wife and mother knew each other today, they'd be "thick as thieves." It's clear Diana's fashion picks have had an influence on Meghan - she even wore Diana's sapphire ring to her wedding reception. Ahead, see more snaps of Meghan's royally chic outfit and accessories. We can't wait to see what else she picks during her 16-day tour with Harry.

How to Make Your Own "Memoji": The Coolest New Feature of iOS 12
"Be yourself or whoever you want to be." That's Apple's latest mantra when it comes to the coolest new feature of iOS 12, Memoji.
Memoji stem from Animoji, which are the animated characters that use the iPhone's front facing TrueDepth camera system to create cartoon caricatures that mimic the user's expressions. Memoji follow the same concept of Animoji, but instead of a panda, a unicorn, or even a pile of poop, you get to design and create a human character that looks just like you - or, however you want it to look.
Limited only to iPhones with the TrueDepth camera system, such as the iPhone X and soon-to-be released XS, XS Max, and XR models, older iPhones are unable to use the new and exciting feature, but can still receive them in the form of a photograph or video.
Memoji are customizable in just about every way, with Apple giving users the option to choose from a variety of skin tones and hair colors, as well as the ability to alter a character's head shape, eyes, nose, lips, and more. Plus, users also have the option to dress their Memoji up in items such as hats or glasses.
Creating a Memoji is done in the Messages app, and is super fun and simple. Check out the photo gallery ahead for a how-to, and then let your imagination run wild when you create your very own Memoji in iOS 12.
Every Single Guest Dressed as a Disney Character at This Picture-Perfect Wedding
I don't care if your heart is as frozen as Elsa's castle - it's about to melt into a puddle of emotions when you see the lengths this couple went to to throw their ultimate Disney dream wedding. Garrett and Jason, aka Woody and Buzz, went all out with their Disney-themed big day, and no detail was ignored. The best part? Every single guest (including their dog) dressed in costume as a different Disney character. Honestly, we can't get over it. And coming in at a close second in our books is the themed tablescapes, each based on a different Disney movie (complete with VHS tape).
Garrett and Jason met at a friend's New Year's Eve party, and what they didn't know until their wedding day was that Garrett's parents and grandparents also met on New Year's Eve! It was meant to be. Here's what else Jason told us about their big Disney day. See all the photos (including their sweet wedding video!) ahead!
POPSUGAR: What was your favorite decorative or event detail of the day?
Jason: Probably the table decorations we made by hand. We obsessed over every detail for the past year. We used those classic Disney VHS clamshells to signify the table name and theme. We chose the VHS clamshells since we both had them and watched them so much they got wore out when we were kids. For the newer movies that were never released on VHS (such as Moana and Up), I designed the VHS covers for them. Each table had elements from the movie; it looked like the movie came to life on the table. There was at least one light-up or glow-in-the-dark element at each table to make it extra magical.
Another one of our favorite parts is our choreographed first dance. It was arranged and instructed by our great friend Alesha Bales, who weaved together a jazz version of "You've Got a Friend in Me" with a Spanish version of the song. She mixed elements from foxtrot, salsa, tango, and paso doble into the dance.
POPSUGAR: What was the most emotional moment of the day?
Jason: The ceremony, because Garrett cried, and he never does that! During our ceremony we had a mixing of the mai tai to signify the good, the bad, and all that comes with a marriage. We went with a mai tai since we love tiki drinks and we travel the country visiting tiki bars. The mai tai was also our signature drink for the wedding.
POPSUGAR: What inspired the overall look and theme of the wedding?
Jason: We had both been fans of Disney and Disney parks growing up. Garrett would frequently visit his friends who worked in the park, while I was inspired by the artists and Imagineers who influenced me to pursue a career in graphic design. But it wasn't until our first trip together to Disneyland that the love for Disney became more of an obsession.
POPSUGAR: Why did you decide to do Disney costumes?
Jason: We love Halloween, and we throw an elaborate themed party every year. We also enjoy Disneybounding and cosplay at Comic-Con. Family and friends must have thought we were crazy to have a costume wedding in the middle of August. But we were happily surprised that most all of our guests were really into it and dressed for the occasion, even our dog!
Garrett wanted to dress as Buzz and Woody because "You've Got a Friend in Me" is one of his favorite Disney songs, and he has known for a long time he wanted that to be the song he danced to as his first dance. So, of course, I had to be Sheriff Woody. Both characters are reminiscent of each of our personalities.
This Couple Transformed a Dated Trailer Into a Dreamy Vacation Home on Wheels
Brianne, an RN, and Sean Walker, a firefighter and photographer, are a married couple living in San Diego with their three young children, and they also happen to be wizards when it comes to flipping trailers. Seriously, when you see how the Walkers transformed a "dark and stinky" RV into a bright and beautiful space that's both stylish and functional for a family of five, you'll be left asking, "When can I move in?" But as they'll attest, there was no magic involved, just a design-savvy vision and a helluva lot of elbow grease.
I asked the Walkers to share the story of how they got interested in renovating trailers (this isn't their first rodeo), what challenges they faced during the process of updating this one, the smart small-space tricks they incorporated, and their advice for anyone brave enough to take on fixing up a vacation home on wheels. Ahead, read what they told POPSUGAR via email, and see all the before and after photos of this mind-blowing renovation!
I Accidentally Got Pregnant With My Best Friend's Baby, and I Wouldn't Change a Thing
It was a wet Monday morning in March 2004. I was 29 years old and had been in my dream job at a popular magazine for three months. I was on my way to my first appraisal but had stopped off at Starbucks to use the bathroom. My period was late, but I wasn't worried. I did a pregnancy test the week before and it was negative, but thought I should take the second test, which came in the handy pack of two, just to be sure.
I peed on the stick, waited the minutes it says to wait, and felt perfectly calm, because I couldn't be pregnant, right? But just as I hit my foot on the bin pedal to throw the test away because the result looked pretty much the same, I did a double take. A faint cross started to appear. I had to hold it up to the light to see it properly, but it was definitely there, becoming stronger and stronger, just like the beats of my heart.
I took out my phone and, with a violently shaking hand, I called Egg. "I think I'm pregnant," I said. "What?" he replied. "But I thought you did a test." "I did another, and it's positive. There's a cross. It's faint, but it's definitely there."
Silence was on the other end of the phone before Egg agreed to meet me for lunch to see the cross for himself. Any woman will tell you that the moment you find out you're pregnant, even if it's planned, is always a shock, but for me, the shock was bigger. You see, Egg was not my husband or my boyfriend. He was - and remains to this day - my friend, one of my very best, but still just my friend.
Egg (my nickname for him) and I met in London when I was a 26-year-old journalist and he was a 33-year-old photographer assigned to shoot the story that I was writing. We hit it off immediately and quickly became buddies. He was original, creative, and fun, and we got on like a house on fire. But I didn't fancy him and certainly never saw him as a potential boyfriend. He made it clear that the feeling was mutual.
One night, however - as friends of the opposite sex sometimes have a tendency to do at some point - we ended up in bed together. This on-and-off (but mainly off) sexual relationship carried on for three years until I fell pregnant, when it became clear this was not what we were about. We did briefly try being in a relationship, but it just never felt right.
I'm so proud, not to mention totally surprised, at how we've made our unconventional situation work.
But now I was pregnant with his child. While Egg, who comes from a long line of bohemians and is seven years older than me, was calm and even delighted about the situation, my world had been turned upside down. I never doubted I wanted to keep our baby, but as my 30th birthday came around (I was 10 weeks pregnant, too early to tell anyone, so I had to pretend the tonic water in my hand had vodka in it), I had some serious recalibrating to do. I'd always assumed my life would follow the conventional pattern: meet the love of my life, get married, have kids. But now I was facing life as a single mom, and the worries multiplied, along with the cells in my womb: Would anyone want me now with a child in tow? Would I cope? Would our child be happy? A big concern was about mine and Egg's relationship. So many articles told me that the first year of being parents is the toughest for couples. Many wouldn't survive it, and they, presumably, were a romantic item. Would mine and Egg's friendship - without the glue of sex - make it through? I couldn't bear to think it wouldn't, since I valued it so highly, but my greatest fear was that we'd become warring exes, dropping our kid off on the other's doorstep, but without the married bit first. Oh, how I underestimated us.
As my pregnancy progressed, I won't pretend things weren't emotionally difficult. I struggled with this notion that having a baby, especially your first, was supposed to be one of the most joyous times for a couple, and because we weren't one, I was a fraud of a pregnant person. Suddenly, pregnant couples were everywhere - in the frozen food section, in the elevator at work, and stroking one another's faces in the Pregnancy and Baby section of bookshops where Egg and I wandered in after my first scan, which he attended, during which he was referred to as my "husband" throughout.
The manuals suggested my partner might rub almond oil on a particularly intimate part of my body to prepare it for birth. This felt rather a tall order from your friend, albeit the very excited father-to-be of your child. As the birth drew nearer, however, I experienced something wonderful and entirely unexpected: Egg and I grew closer. Our friendship deepened, and I grew excited about taking it to the ultimate level: sharing a child. We agreed to coparent. That is, we'd live apart, but share care of her or him, literally dividing our time 50/50, something that we still do to this day, and our son is now 13. When he was born, perfect in every way in December 2004, Egg was at my side and could not have been more supportive.
So many people were convinced that Egg and I would eventually get together (people still ask all the time), and I'd be lying if I claimed I'd not hoped for that myself at times. However, I'm so proud, not to mention totally surprised, at how we've made our unconventional situation work. I'm proud of the state of our friendship (it's never been better) and of our gorgeous, loving son who has obviously given us the same joy that any child, no matter how they come into the world, would.
I always describe the way we've brought him up to be "together-apart." When he was 4, we moved together-apart out of London to a smaller town where the schools were better and there was countryside around. We've been on countless holidays together and always spend Christmas together, too. I never imagined my life would turn out this way - to live as a single mom with my son and be just good friends with his dad - but I see so many positives in our situation. Our son never has to worry about us divorcing, since we were never together in the first place. And, without the "we really should have sex" thing hanging over our heads like it seems to for so many of my married friends, I feel totally liberated to just enjoy the friendship we have. Many people say we get on better than they do with their spouse.
There was a time when, due to financial circumstances, I had to move in with Egg for a while. Everyone said when I moved out that my son must be devastated, but on the contrary, he couldn't wait for us to live in separate houses again. Why? "I get more attention and you don't bicker all the time about parenting!" he said. When my friends talk about the point-scoring that goes on in their homes ("I bathed him, so you can read him a bedtime story"), I feel so (smugly!) pleased that I don't have any of that. It's not all smooth sailing, of course. No parenting is. But sometimes I feel so lucky that my son has all the benefits of the other parent's love and support without the risk that, one day, it'll all go sour.

Shonda Rhimes on Raising Her Kids in the Age of Instagram: "Looking Different Should Be a Badge of Honor"
Shonda Rhimes created some of the most successful and iconic TV shows of all time, including Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away With Murder. And when she's not running her production company, Shondaland, the mom of three daughters has been throwing her efforts and resources behind some of the most prevalent social matters of recent years. She's always been lauded for her approach to tough social issues - especially in how they are handled on her shows - but some of her most notable social accomplishments have happened off screen.
Rhimes is credited as one of the heavyweight supporters of the #MeToo movement, she and the whole cast of Grey's Anatomy took a knee in support of Colin Kaepernick last September, and most recently, she was the keynote speaker at Dove's first-ever Self-Esteem Summit. The summit acted as an extension of their Self-Esteem Project, which works to create a supportive community of female-identifying people, to challenge beauty stereotypes and empower people to learn how to love all parts of their bodies.
"Whether it's your looks, what clothes you should be wearing, what you should study in college, who you should decide to date, if you decide to date . . . there will be many opinions out there. And many of those opinions will be about what you should look like," said Rhimes during her keynote. "Our world can be obsessed with these opinions about appearance. But guess what? Those voices don't go away."
Her moving speech wove through the ins and outs of motherhood in the digital age, as well as the struggles she's personally faced (and continues to face) as a woman - and more specifically, a woman of color - in the entertainment industry. POPSUGAR had the chance to sit down with her at the summit to discuss how she navigates these difficult self-esteem issues, particularly with her three daughters.
POPSUGAR: In this Instagram era, where Photoshopped images are literally available at our fingertips, it can be hard to not compare yourself to everyone else.
Shonda Rhimes: Yeah, it's really hard. We get these ideas because we're bombarded with those images all the time. This generation, Gen Z, is a generation that has grown up spending more time looking at their selfies than they have looking at their own faces in the mirror. It's really a hard thing to deal with, because this is the Instagram generation and we [as parents] do have to deal with that.
PS: How do we shut off those voices in our heads that tell us we don't look as good as the people we see online?
SR: You don't have to buy into it. The idea that you would want to look like anybody else, period, should be a disturbing idea to you. In a world in which everybody is trying to mold themselves to look the same, looking different should be a badge of honor.
PS: How do you filter out these images for your daughters so they're not growing up with warped body standards? It seems like the age for getting a smartphone gets lower and lower every year.
SR: I try to look at what they watch, and I try to talk to them about who they are and what's OK. My 5 and 6-year-old probably get a lot of lectures that they wish they weren't getting. But I also think it's important to just be open and honest and have dialogues and conversations. That's where people have gone wrong lately, I think; we're so busy looking at our screens and we're not having conversations.
PS: Do you have rules around the house to help guide these conversations with your daughters?
SR: Well, I think the smartphone thing is a given - no one should be giving a smartphone to a small child. I don't know that there are rules you can give because the world is changing so quickly. [Us parents] are flying by the seat of our pants and making it up as we go. I have a 5-year-old, a 6-year-old, and a 16-year-old, and the world is so different now than it was, say, three years ago. What's out there, what's going on, and the images they're being bombarded with, [they're constantly changing]. My 6-year-old and 5-year-old don't know that commercials exist - they've never seen a commercial before. And when [one of my daughters] saw an actual paper magazine, she tried to swipe it. It's a very interesting world for them.
PS: Do you think it's ever too early to have these conversations with your young children?
SR: I don't think it's ever too early to start telling your kids that they're beautiful, that they're interesting, and that they're great.
