PSA: Walmart Now Sells Ranch-Flavored Cauliflower Fries, 'Cause Who Needs Potatoes?
Cauliflower has disguised itself in a bunch of our favorite comfort foods: pizza crust, gnocchi, mashed potatoes, and even stuffing. But just when we thought people couldn't get any more creative with the fibrous veggie, Birds Eye came out with a genius twist: Cauliflower and Ranch Fries.
The "fries" are made with cauliflower and sweet potato and clock in at 150 calories, six grams of fat, three grams of fiber, two grams of sugar, and three grams of protein. With 20 grams of carbs per serving, these aren't keto-friendly, but they do have fewer carbs than a traditional serving of fries; a medium order of McDonald's fries has 45 grams of carbs.
To make eating them even easier, these come premade and frozen so you just have to pop them in the oven to crisp them up. Birds Eye promises that these fries are made with no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives and that each serving size contains one serving of vegetables.
If you're looking for a healthier spin on your favorite comfort food, pick up a bag of these frozen fries. Intsagram user TheImpulsiveBuy found them at Walmart, so keep an eye on your local grocery store's frozen vegetable section.
A Fitness Trainer Shares the 5 Things That Finally Helped Her Lose Belly Fat
Do you feel like you've tried everything but your belly fat won't go away? It's one of the hardest places to lose fat. "Belly fat is often a sign of stress or insulin resistance," Amy Shapiro, MS, RD, CDN, and founder of Real Nutrition, told POPSUGAR. "When you are stressed, your cortisol levels rise, which may lead to storing fat in your middle. Genetics do play a role here as well, so if your parent tends to carry weight in their middle, you might end up doing the same."
Personal trainer and strength coach Susan Niebergall has struggled with losing belly fat, so she understands how hard it is. "The changes our bodies go through as we get older can be frustrating. I know. I have been there too. But we CAN do something about it. Don't think this is it. That it's game over. It's never too late to make changes," Susan wrote in her Instagram caption. "As someone who completely changed my body in my fifties, I am here to tell you it works. It takes putting in the work, but it does work."
Although you can't specifically tell your tummy to slim down on command, Vermont-based registered dietitian nutritionist Maddie Kinzly, MS, LD, told POPSUGAR that you can see reductions in your belly fat and other areas of your body when you lose weight overall. Susan said, "The formula for burning belly fat is the same for fat loss in general." Here are the five things you need to lose belly fat.
I Fasted 16 Hours a Day For 1 Week - Here's What It Actually Felt Like
The first thing that comes to mind when I hear the words intermittent fasting (IF) is deprivation. It sounds virtually unappealing to a serial snacker like myself. After doing extensive research on IF, though, I quickly learned there's a broad range of benefits associated with trying this fast such as weight loss (especially stubborn lower-belly fat), lowering blood sugar, improving cognitive health and memory, decreasing inflammation, increasing energy, curbing sugar cravings, and the perk that sold me instantly: better sleep!
There are a few fasting protocols one could follow, such as the 5:2 plan (eat normally for five days while eating only 500 to 600 calories on the other two days); alternate fasting, where you switch between periods of consuming zero-calorie foods and beverages and actually eating whole foods; and the most popular fast, which I opted for, the 16:8 plan (16-hour fast and an eight-hour feasting period). I've tried 24-hour fasting in the past where I've failed miserably, so I was curious to see if IF would be any different.
Sydney Axelrod, an NYC registered dietitian at Mount Sinai, told POPSUGAR, "If we're constantly eating, then our body will always be in the 'fed' state, which tells our brain we don't need to use our stored energy aka burn fat. It's also great to take a break from eating so often so our bodies can focus on other processes, like regulating hormones, decreasing stress, and reducing inflammation". As a person who eats every hour on the hour, this poses a great challenge.
Another great challenge for me is maintaining muscle mass. I have a thin frame naturally, so I've been weight training for years to gain muscle and build strength. However, Korey Rowe, a certified personal trainer at Dogpound Gym, said, "You'll have to fast a very long time (72+ hours) for your body to begin breaking down muscle tissue. The key is to strength train in the morning (during your fasting period) to boost human growth hormone. That particular hormone shifts your body into a fat-burning state while forming new muscle and maintaining mass while experiencing favorable changes in body composition".
Below is a personal account of my week-long intermittent fasting experience:
Day 1: Am I Alive?
I woke up at 5 a.m. this morning out of pure angst at the thought of not being able to eat until noon. I made the executive decision to utilize my time wisely and take a Vinyasa flow yoga class at 9 a.m. I can't confidently say this was a great boss move because during the class I felt a little lightheaded, but I will say it did help calm my mind and take away from my hunger pangs. I ate my last meal at 8 p.m. last night, my yoga class was about an hour long, so finishing up at 10:05 a.m. took up a good chunk of time where my mind (and stomach) wasn't so focused on consuming food. I ate an avocado and egg sandwich around noon, chugged water religiously, and snacked on macadamia nuts around 3:30-4 p.m. I finished my night off with a cup of tea and Pop chips at 8 p.m. I survived the first day. I'm alive.
Day 2: Headaches Galore
I broke fast at 14 hours because I woke up with a knocking headache. I tried drinking more water, which didn't help much at all. In fact, it only made me more annoyed because I was getting up out of my bed every five minutes to use the bathroom. I ate avocado toast at 10 a.m. to help get rid of this headache, which did nothing. Also, I'm 100 percent sure I drank at least one gallon of water before noon to try to kick this headache, but the headache won that fight. I had a smoothie for lunch with a few handfuls of macadamia nuts. I didn't feel as hungry today as I did yesterday, which was weird for me because I'm always hungry, but I didn't force myself to eat. I listened to my body and ate what I felt was decent at that moment.
At 8 p.m., I ate a light spinach salad with eggs, shredded cucumber, a little pecorino cheese, and hemp seeds tossed in lemon zest olive oil.
Day 3: Feeling Refreshed
I woke up today feeling ah-mazing! I felt refreshed and well-rested, which for me is an absolute perk because I've always had trouble sleeping through the night. No headache, no hunger pangs. I think this feeling stemmed from the fact that I was not eating right before I went to bed. What I'm extremely impressed with is my lack in cravings. As stated before, I'm a serial snacker who can eat potato chips at any hour, any day of the week. The fact that I hadn't had a single urge to grab a bag is pretty darn impressive.
I broke fast at 12 p.m. I opted for two bananas and made a fresh green juice at home. I ate a full meal about 45 minutes later.
Day 4: Feeling Like the Hulk
I woke up with so much energy that I decided to take a HIIT class. I grew up a competitive athlete, so I'm not new to weightlifting by any means. However, I was hesitant about training heavy on an empty stomach. But I went in with an open mind and felt great. I was amazed at how much energy I had. I was able to increase my weight with no problem, I blasted through all of the circuits like a champ, and I felt energized the whole way through. No lightheadedness, no faint feeling at all. I peaked at drinking a gallon of water before 4 p.m., which is pretty impressive. I had more energy today than I've ever had before, which speaks volumes. Feeling amazing.
I broke fast by eating avocado and salmon toast with eggs, spinach, and pecorino cheese on a fresh baguette.
Day 5-7: Smooth Sailing
Now that I was in the groove, it went rather smoothly. Energy was at 100 percent and I felt lighter and more alert. I'm more mindful of what and when I eat, which is a game changer. I've learned how to control my desires and stay disciplined. I'm enjoying waking up and waiting a little bit before I consume food. There's something about having an empty stomach for just a little while that makes me more alive and conscious of what I'm eating throughout the day. I also think it's helped me enjoy my food more. I didn't lose any weight, but I do notice my body is a lot leaner and more toned. In fact, I gained a little more muscle, which is awesome. I'm sleeping sounder as well, and that's been the biggest perk. I believe my dreams are more vivid because my mind is clearer. I can see intermittent fasting becoming a part of my life, because the results are there - there's no denying it.
The #1 Antiaging Ingredient You Should Be Using, According to Derms
Like an anal-retentive roommate who's always after you about the dishes, retinol is extremely effective at making sure everything looks as pristine as possible - but it can also be pretty irritating.
On the upside: not all formulas are created equal, and most experts would still agree that the workhorse ingredient is the best thing you can do for your skin. After all, nothing else on the market has been clinically proven to simultaneously fade fine lines and dark spots, treat acne, or reduce the appearance of pores for a brighter, dare-we-say-better looking visage. And while dermatologists love to pull out their prescription pads, because we asked nicely, they've divulged their favorite OTC retinols you need in on, ahead.

Kendall Jenner Faces Cultural Appropriation Accusations Over Her Vogue Hairstyle
Kendall Jenner has sparked controversy within the fashion industry after posing in a Vogue editorial with a hairstyle that many have said resembles an afro. The editorial in the magazine's November 2018 issue celebrates the 15th anniversary of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. In it, the 22-year-old model wears clothing from previous winners, and her hair is styled in a halo of curls, much like an afro.
The hairstyle warranted accusations of cultural appropriation because the afro is a natural hairstyle associated with and popularized by the black community. In fact, the afro was originally viewed as a powerful political statement and a rejection of Eurocentric beauty standards following the formation of the Black Is Beautiful movement in the 1960s. What's more, the texture of the hairstyle Jenner is shown wearing in the editorial is so blatantly different from how her hair typically looks.
Vogue later responded and said the intention was not to have the hairstyle mimic an afro. "The image is meant to be an update of the romantic Edwardian/Gibson Girl hair which suits the period feel of the Brock Collection, and also the big hair of the '60s and the early '70s, that puffed-out, teased-out look of those eras," the magazine told E! News. "We apologize if it came across differently than intended, and we certainly did not mean to offend anyone by it."
Last year, Vogue faced a similar backlash over a Japan-inspired editorial starring Karlie Kloss, who is white. Meanwhile, Jenner also caused quite the controversy over a t-shirt collection she released with her sister Kylie, which featured their faces juxtaposed over images of Biggie Smalls and Tupac, among other artists. Jenner has yet to publicly address this recent misstep.
This Mask Gave Me the Softest Skin of My Life
You know when you have a good skin day? The birds are chirping, the sun is shining, and everything feels just a little bit brighter? That's the feeling I'm constantly chasing. I will try anything to soothe my sensitive, combination skin, but my number one priority is that it's smooth. Someone telling me I have soft skin is one of the highest compliments I've ever received. I moisturize religiously, and there are some days where it really works, but others where I feel like it doesn't matter what I do, the uneven texture will always prevail. Certain treatments and masks have helped to exfoliate and clear up my skin; their effects would last for a few hours post-treatment, but eventually the bumps would return, and I accepted my fate.
I woke up to the softest skin of my life. It was like a dream.
For all the research I do about the best, most potent products for my skin, I have to admit that I'm also a sucker for packaging, which is what initially drew me to the brand Summer Fridays. Its products come in the cutest colorful tubes that are made for both Instagram and my tiny bathroom. When I saw the brand's newest launch, the exfoliating Summer Fridays Overtime Mask ($44), I knew it was going to be my treatment of choice this Fall. I mean, it's the cutest shade of orange, and it even smells like autumnal spices. What I couldn't have predicted was how well this product works.
The mask is yellow, with exfoliating kernels that work to slough away dead skin cells. I applied the mask, watched an episode of Friends, and took it off. It came off pretty easily, which I always appreciate, and I went to bed pleased with the whole experience. But, you guys, I woke up to the softest skin of my life. It was like a dream. My makeup applied flawlessly, and as I walked into the office, I'm pretty sure I heard birds chirping. I've never had better skin days than I do the morning after applying this mask, and I'm not stopping anytime soon. I'm glowing like I just spent a week in Italy, my pores are clearer, and my skin is soft. Plus, the entire experience of applying the mask is so soothing and pleasant, I'm actually excited to use it every week.
I've never had better skin days than I do the morning after applying this mask, and I'm not stopping anytime soon.
If it isn't abundantly clear, I love this mask. It's formulated with pumpkin and apricot seed powder, and it smells like Fall, while remaining fragrance-, gluten-, and silicone-free. It's also vegan and cruelty-free, so it's a clean choice you can feel good about. Next time you're sitting home with a cup of tea and a cozy blanket, try this mask. I wouldn't be surprised if you wake up to a brighter day in the morning.

This Guy's Insight on What It's Like to Be Colorblind Is Equal Parts Funny and Thoughtful
Storyteller and humorist Bryan Kett broke down what it's really like to be colorblind in a thoughtful TEDx talk delivered in Pasadena, CA, in September. After diving into the science behind colorblindness, he explained the complexities of the condition, touching on his own experience while sharing some hilarious anecdotes. "What I'm wearing right now took an entire team of professionals to assemble," he said. "Apparently these pants are burgundy, which I'm told is quite bold and quite stylish." Later, he joked, "I have a hard time knowing when meat is properly cooked, so I just play it safe and burn everything."
In between funny stories, though, Kett delved into cultural takes on color, how being colorblind has affected his perspective, and why he's excited for what's next. Check out the full clip above to hear about his unique outlook - and get in a few laughs.

See Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton's Royal Tours of Australia, Side by Side
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are halfway through their first royal tour as a married couple in Australia, and it's resulted in so many delightful moments. From Harry giving Meghan and their baby a shout-out in his Invictus Games speech to the couple reinventing the art of hand-holding, we sort of wish the tour never had to end. In addition to relishing every sweet moment between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, you might also be getting flashbacks to Prince William and Kate Middleton's first royal tour of Australia.
The pair first traveled Down Under together in 2014. During their trip, they visited Ayers Rock, the National Indigenous Training Academy, and Sydney's Opera House and met with several locals, including some incredibly cute kids. They even brought along Prince George, and they also attended a special ANZAC memorial service, just like Meghan and Harry. As Harry and Meghan continue their 16-day trip, take a look at Meghan's and Kate's Australia tours, side by side.
Jamie Lee Curtis Celebrates Halloween's Record-Breaking Box Office Status With an Epic Tweet
If you haven't seen the new Halloween yet, hop in your car and drive to a theater ASAP - pretty much everyone else in the country has. The latest addition to the horror franchise centered around Michael Myers - as well as Jamie Lee Curtis's OG Final Girl Laurie Strode - slayed the box office as easily as a silver screen serial killer slays . . . well, everyone.
The film took home a domestic haul of $77.5 million, making it the second-highest opening for an R-rated horror film of all time (second only to 2017's It), as well as the second-highest opening for a movie release in October of all time (Venom nabbed the top spot). Not too shabby for a story that's essentially been being told over and over again since 1978, eh?
In addition to the financial accolades Universal, Blumhouse, and Miramax are reaping, is the immense amount of respect that needs to be attributed to the film's lead heroine, Jamie Lee Curtis. Even so, the 57-year-old actress isn't afraid to brag about Halloween's accomplishments herself - she shared a tweet on Sunday that she dubbed a "boast post," outlining all the ways her movie is currently kicking ass.
OK. I'm going for one BOAST post. Biggest horror movie opening with a female lead.
Biggest movie opening with a female lead over 55.
Second biggest October movie opening ever.
Biggest Halloween opening ever #womengetthingsdone @halloweenmovie pic.twitter.com/DhUBy82z3U- Jamie Lee Curtis (@jamieleecurtis) October 21, 2018
According to Variety, Halloween's earnings at the box office not only made it the best opening for a horror movie with a female lead, but also the biggest first weekend ever for a film with a female lead over the age of 55. In fact, this is the second time this year we've seen a horror film choose a female lead over that age.
In January, Blumhouse's Insidious: The Last Key starred 75-year-old Lin Shaye, and racked up a few records for the Insidious franchise: second-highest opening weekend, highest international gross, and second-highest domestic gross. Both that film and Halloween put the actresses front and center, hinging the stories almost entirely around them, which is no small thing in notoriously ageist Hollywood.
As Curtis's choice in hashtag says, "Women getting things done" is right.
Jennifer Aniston Hits the Red Carpet, and I'm Curious How 1 Person Can Look This Perfect
Jennifer Aniston looked radiant when she stepped out for the 2018 InStyle Awards in LA on Monday night. The actress was stylish in a sexy black dress and was on hand to support her hairstylist and friend Chris McMillan with the hairstylist of the year award. During her speech, Jennifer kept things lighthearted as she cracked a joke at Chris's expense.
"I had no idea how to do what he did. No one seems to know how to do what Chris does, and I figured out that's called creating job security, so well done, Chris," Jennifer joked. Chris, on the other hand, couldn't help but gush about Jennifer and their friendship during his acceptance speech. "She's taught me not only to have a friend but be a friend, and I'm so lucky to have a muse like Jen," he said.
Jennifer has had quite the busy year; not only was the actress in Italy over the Summer filming her upcoming Netflix movie Murder Mystery, with Adam Sandler, but Jennifer will also be starring in the Netflix adaptation of Dumplin'. The movie is based on Julie Murphy's New York Times bestseller and tells the story of Willowdean Dickson, a "self-proclaimed fat girl" played by Danielle Macdonald (Patti Cake$), who's dubbed "Dumplin'" by her former beauty-queen mom.
I Was Cry-Laughing Within a Minute of This Stoned Pennywise Makeup Tutorial
This week, we discovered a hilarious makeup tutorial for The Nun, in which Brandi TV eats a bunch of edibles, then attempts to recreate the horrifying visage of the demon Valak. As it turns out, her YouTube channel is a veritable treasure trove of hilarious under-the-influence tutorials just like that one. One that's perfect for the season is an attempt at the horrifying clown from It, Pennywise. Watch what this girl can do with a very potent pot brownie, a white plastic bag, an old Scooby-Doo wig, and no clue how to glue down eyebrows. I can't breathe. Tears are streaming down my face.
Meghan Markle Just Gave Her First Royal Tour Speech, and It Was Inspiring as Hell
Meghan Markle just hit another milestone: she delivered her first royal tour speech! Following their arrival in Fiji, Meghan and Prince Harry paid a special to the University of the South Pacific on Wednesday. The Duchess of Sussex spoke about the importance of college and how the cost of it affected her when she was younger.
"Everyone should be afforded the opportunity to receive the education they want, but more importantly the education they have the right to receive. And for women and girls in developing countries, this is vital," Meghan told the students. "When girls are given the right tools to succeed, they can create incredible futures, not only for themselves, but also for those around them."
Meghan then announced two new grants that support female staff members at the university. "My husband Harry and I wish you all the very best of luck as you continue your studies and your work," Meghan said. "Your efforts now will help to make a positive future for each of you and your communities at large."
Meghan is the second British royal bride to have ever attended college (Kate Middleton is the first). After graduating from a private Catholic school in LA, Meghan attended Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, where she earned a bachelor's degree and double majored in theater and international studies in 2003.

Imagine Dragons' Trippy Music Video For "Zero" Will Hype You Up For Wreck-It Ralph 2
Imagine Dragons is ready to get you pumped up for Wreck-It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks The Internet. In the film, the adorable duo stumble upon a WiFi router in their arcade, which sends them on a high-flying journey around the World Wide Web. Whoa! Prince Philip Is the Spitting Image of Prince Harry in This Royal Throwback
We're well aware that Queen Elizabeth II's genes are strong, but as it turns out, so are Prince Philip's. Last week, Prince Harry channeled Prince Charming when he unveiled the new ANZAC memorial in Sydney with Meghan Markle. Getty photographer Chris Jackson was quick to point out that the royal was the spitting image of his grandfather when he was young. The photographer posted a photo on Instagram of Philip on the cover of a 1957 copy of Paris Match.
"I spotted this beautiful 1957 vintage cover of a @parismatch_magazine whilst visiting our wedding venue in France a couple of years ago - Who does it remind you of!?" he captioned the snap featuring Philip in his white uniform and gold chords, similar to the one Harry wore. "Whilst today it's very much a 'Modern Monarchy' it's these historical reference points that make photographing the Royal family so unique and remind you of the centuries of tradition that remain at their core."
Philip has a close relationship with all of his eight grandchildren, but we especially love seeing his bond with Harry. In fact, it was reported that Harry and Meghan expedited their wedding earlier this year to ensure Philip could attend. How sweet!

Although costars like Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher, Melissa Fumero, Joe Lo Truglio, and Stephanie Beatriz didn't appear in the video, we have a feeling the cast is going to be back up to their old antics in no time. Chelsea Peretti's Gina won't be there for all of season six, which is a bummer, but she guaranteed fans in early October that "that doesn't mean I won't ever be back, winky face emoji, heart emoji."
Meghan Markle Is Glowing on Her Australian Tour With Prince Harry - See All the Photos!
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are in the midst of their first royal tour as husband and wife! After touching down in Australia on Oct. 14, Meghan debuted her growing belly in style as she and Harry met with Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove and his wife, Lady Cosgrove, at Admiralty House in Sydney. The couple were joined by representatives from Harry's Invictus Games, and Meghan was positively glowing in a white dress while Harry looked dapper in a navy suit. To make things even sweeter, the governor-general gifted Meghan with her first baby present: a kangaroo stuffed toy!
Meghan and Harry have had a busy few days. Not only did they get to hang out with some baby koalas at the zoo, but they also caught a ferry to the Opera House, where they watched a rehearsal by the Bangarra Dance Company. During their stop in Dubbo on Oct. 17, Harry and Meghan were greeted by a group of schoolchildren and Harry delivered a powerful speech about mental health.
The royal couple landed in Melbourne on Oct. 18, where they met with some very emotional fans before attending a reception hosted by the Governor of Victoria at the Government House. There, Meghan received a little scare while watching a science experiment, but don't worry - it ended in a lot of giggles. Later, they visited Charcoal Lane and got a taste of Australian cuisine before heading to the beach. On Oct. 19, Harry and Meghan visited Sydney, where they met with OneWave founders Grant Trebilco and Sam Schumacher at Bondi Beach. OneWave is a local surfing community group that raises awareness for mental health. The couple also paid a surprise visit to the Macarthur Girls High School in Parramatta.
Come Oct. 20, Meghan and Harry attended the official opening of ANZAC Memorial, followed by an important return for the royals, as they participated in the 2018 Invictus Games Opening Ceremony. They started things off at the Jaguar Land Rover Driving Challenge, and Harry made sure to rehearse his speech in front of Meghan before the evening celebration at the Sydney Opera House. On Sunday, Kensington Palace revealed that Meghan would be cutting back on her events throughout the tour to rest at home. Harry stepped out for an Invictus Games cycling event, before being joined by Meghan in the afternoon for sailing. On Monday, the pair headed to Fraser Island, where they took a sunny stroll together and met with fans. The following day, Harry and Meghan left Australia for Fiji, where they were greeted in a strictly traditional fashion and attended a reception and dinner hosted by the nation's president. On Wednesday, the duo donned traditional outfits when they met with students at the University of the South Pacific.
Harry and Meghan's tour comes on the heels of Kensington Palace's announcement that the pair are expecting their first child! Even though we just found out about the news, Harry and Meghan reportedly told the royal family at Princess Eugenie's wedding last week. Congrats to Meghan and Harry!

We Paid Off $55K of Debt in 2 Years - All on 1 Income
It was a crazy thought - paying off and cutting up every single one of my credit cards. It was an even crazier thought that one day we may not owe anyone a single dime.
I kept thinking to myself, "It'll never happen" and "I'm a stay-at-home mom with another baby on the way and my husband is a contractor, we can't make this work." But little by little, we did.
We killed off over $55,000 of debt in just two years, all while living on one income and growing our family of five. It was anything but easy, but the decision to become debt-free was the best one we ever made.
We killed off over $55,000 of debt in just two years all while living on one income and growing our family of five.
Our family members looked at us like we had lost our minds when we told them we no longer had a credit card for "emergencies" and when we got rid of our fully loaded Mac Daddy Tahoe for a well-loved, paid-for Sequoia with leather interior being the only bells and whistles it has.
My friends thought I was insane when I started walking dogs for extra money to pay off our debt even faster. "Uh, you're hugely pregnant and you're walking dogs in this heat?! Y'all must really need the money."
And the truth is, we did need the money. We needed every penny because we had a crazy plan of paying off all our debt. And this year, we are going to finish that plan and pay off our house.
By now, our friends and family don't think we're crazy anymore because they've seen firsthand the blessing that becoming free from the hold of debt has been to our family. My husband was able to quit a job that he no longer loved in favor of starting his own business again and being home more with our three children. We've been able to give like never before without fear that we won't have enough money left to pay the bills. We've been able to send our two oldest children to a private preschool, and we've been able to go on several vacations. All without using credit cards and all while paying off debt.
It hasn't been easy, but then again, nothing worthwhile ever is. If you want to join my family in the crazy and pay off debt, here's how you get started:
1. Stop Using It
In order to completely become debt-free, you have to make a commitment to stop using debt - of any kind. That means no more credit cards, no more taking out loans of any kind, and no more borrowing money from a relative.
It'll be scary at first, like real scary. You'll feel a little panic like you won't know what to do if this or that happens, which is why you must do step two . . .
2. Start Saving
Trust me when I tell you this - once you make the declaration to become debt-free, all of a sudden all these worries and panic will hit you. You'll start worrying how you'll pay to fix the car when it breaks down or how you'll pay your insurance deductible if an emergency happens. This is why you must absolutely start building up an emergency fund.
Start with your starting point - talk to your spouse about how much you want to save first. It could be as little as $500 and as high as $5,000. The point with the starting point is to pick a number that works well for your family but is not overwhelming.
A great emergency fund will end up having six months of your living expenses saved in it. Which for most folks, if you tallied up how much money it takes you to live every month, then multiply that number by six, it's probably at least $20,000 if not more.
The truth is that if you tried to make $20,000 your starting point instead of, say, $1,000, you'd end up overwhelmed and feeling defeated when you struggled to save up that amount. Don't do that to yourself. Pick a starting point that you can realistically save in the next month to three months.
Then once you've reached your starting point, pick another point and work your way up to your six-month emergency fund goal.
3. Pick Your Method
There are a lot of arguments in the personal finance community of which debt payoff method is better - the debt avalanche method or the debt snowball method. For me personally, I love the debt snowball method (and it's the one we used) because it helps you build up momentum and keeps you from feeling frustrated by little visible progress.
But obviously, you should pick the method that best works for you and your family. In case you're not familiar with these methods, here's how they work:
- Debt Snowball Method: In this method, you pay off the lowest balance debt first and then "snowball" up from there to the next lowest balance debt.
- Debt Avalanche Method: In this method, you pay off the debt with the highest interest rate and then "avalanche" from there down to the next highest interest rate debt.
4. Which Debt to Start With?
Once you've decided on the method you're going to use, you'll then pick which debt you're going to start paying off. In order to pay off this debt, you're going to have to throw every extra penny that you have at it.
5. Stick to It
This is the hard part of killing off the debt monster. You have to stay committed and focused to paying off your debt. Even when there are setbacks (and there will be setbacks!), you must keep going. The debts aren't going to pay off themselves.
Always remember to give yourself grace when you hit a stumbling block, but don't be afraid to get back up and back to work. Write down what your life will look like once you're debt-free, and keep that as inspiration for those tough days to help keep you motivated.
I Toured the Hocus Pocus Filming Locations (as a Witch), and Here's What Happened
Watching Hocus Pocus marathons in October is just as much of a tradition as popping bottles of champagne on New Year's Eve. But what isn't tradition - at least for the people I grew up around in Los Angeles - is actually visiting the Hocus Pocus filming locations in Salem, MA.
That changed this year when my boyfriend, Blake, made my childhood dreams come true. He surprised me with a road trip to Salem and gave me enough time to decide if we'd go as ourselves or as a witch and a warlock. I'm an October baby, so of course we were going as the latter. We packed up our Halloween costumes and makeup and headed on a 4.5-hour trip to Salem. Here's what happened next.
6 Best Dog Breeds For Families With Small Kids
It's not unusual for families to adopt a dog around the same time as having their own children. But are some dog breeds better suited for families with small children? We were recently asked that, so we reached out to Dr. Eva Radke, DVM, of the East San Rafael Veterinary Clinic in California to see what we could come up with.
There are various things to consider, according to Radke, aside from a dog just being a family-friendly breed. She recommends taking your own daily life into account. "Are you an active family who spends a lot of time hiking, running, and camping?" she asks. "Or do you tend to stay home cooking and enjoying movies? You will want to choose a dog whose temperament, size, and energy level best matches your family."
At the end of the day, it's also important to remember that your dog is just that: a dog. "Even the gentlest-mannered dog is still an animal with her own set of instincts and ways to express herself," Radke said. She suggests you never leave your small children unattended with the dog, just in case, and always supervise them when they're together. Your pup may always tolerate the ear and tail tugs from your kid, but you don't want to run the risk of the dog snapping one day when you aren't paying attention.
Keep reading to find six dog breeds Radke said are best suited for families, based on each breed's typical personality traits.

Madeline Stuart on Modeling With Down Syndrome: "There's Never Been a Second I Thought I Couldn't Do It"
At just 21 years old (and only a few years into her modeling career), Madeline Stuart has accomplished more than most people hope for in a lifetime. In addition to being the first model with Down syndrome to participate in New York Fashion Week, the Australian native has also walked in more than 60 runway shows and has become a huge advocate for people with disabilities in the modeling world. "In the beginning, [a lot of] designers expected I would be happy to walk for free or for the 'experience,' which was very disheartening," she told POPSUGAR when we recently chatted with her about Disability Employment Awareness Month, which is this October. "I worked very hard to break down barriers to get where I am."
And Madeline isn't stopping anytime soon. In addition to two upcoming social media campaigns with large brands, she's also gearing up to travel the globe as Carnival Cruise's Fashion at Sea ambassador. "I will have a very busy year!" she told POPSUGAR. "I have some very exciting things happening at the moment."
And as for the people in the industry who still doubt her, she's determined to prove them wrong. "There has never been a second when I thought I couldn't do it," she said. "I love modeling, and that alone makes me work hard to overcome any obstacles that I'm faced with." To see what else she had to say about her impressive career and advice for other people with disabilities following their dreams, keep reading.
POPSUGAR: When did you first realize that modeling was what you wanted to do?
Madeline Stuart: It's funny because when I was growing up, I was never very interested in fashion or clothes and never pictured myself modeling! It all started when my mum took me to a fashion show in my hometown of Brisbane, Australia, and I fell in love with it. I was watching the models on the catwalk, and they were having so much fun. They looked confident and beautiful; I knew right away I wanted to have a career on the catwalk.
PS: Growing up, did people tell you that you wouldn't be able to model? If so, how did you respond to that?
MS: When I was growing up, I actually always wanted to be a waitress at a cafe. I didn't know that I wanted to model until I was 18, so thankfully, I didn't receive any criticism or judgment in regards to modeling because I wasn't involved with the industry back then.
PS: What were the first few steps you took to make your dreams come true?
MS: After the initial fashion show I watched with my mum, she booked me in for my first photo shoot. I had recently lost a lot of weight in the pursuit of become a fitter and healthier version of myself, so I was in great shape. I had so much fun, and the photos turned out amazing! My mum thought they were stunning and she wanted to share them with the world, so that's exactly what she did! She posted them to a public Facebook page and they went viral overnight. They were seen by millions of people, and from that point, my career took off. I started receiving offers from around the globe to come and model and attend amazing events. It's been a very exciting few years and I can't wait for what's to come!
PS: What's one obstacle that you've overcome in your career that you're really proud of?
MS: In the beginning, it was sometimes difficult for designers to see me as a professional and they expected that I would be happy to walk for free or for the "experience," which was very disheartening. I worked very hard to break down barriers to get where I am and felt I deserved to be treated the same as other models. My mum and I worked hard to educate people and make some serious changes in the industry for myself and other models with a disability. I can proudly say that I am now treated like the other professional models, and I do not get asked to walk for the "experience" anymore. It's real changes like this that make my job even more rewarding.
PS: Something you still struggle with?
MS: I am still not signed with a modeling agency; this is something we have been working hard to achieve from the beginning. It's been three and a half years that my mum has managed my career and done my bookings, because we can't find a suitable agency. We would really love for this to change!
PS: Was there ever a moment you thought you couldn't do it? If so, how did you push through that?
MS: There has never been a second when I thought I couldn't do it. I love modeling and that alone makes me work hard to overcome any obstacles that I'm faced with. From a very young age, my mum has always shown me that I'm able to do anything I want. She tells me every day that I'm capable of anything if I work hard.
PS: What advice do you have for someone else with a disability who wants to have a career and follow their dreams?
MS: The best advice I have is to believe in yourself and work hard at the things you want to achieve. I know a lot of people who give up when things get hard, but if you can push through, things are always better on the other side, and you'll be so proud of what you've achieved.
PS: What advice would you give your younger self just starting out in her career?
MS: To enjoy the ride! I have loved every moment of my journey, but I know it can be easy to forget sometimes. I would say to anyone starting out in the industry to work hard but also make sure to have fun at the same time, because what is life without fun?
PS: What do you want employers to know about people with Down syndrome applying for jobs?
MS: I would like them to know that we are very capable of doing everything you ask. You might need to explain or show us in a different way than you're used to, but I promise we can work hard! I, for example, find it easier when designers show me what I need to do rather than tell me. I always get it right, I just learn in a different way.
PS: What is your favorite part about your job?
MS: The modeling! I love walking the catwalks - it makes me feel at home and it's a feeling I'll never be able to truly describe. I also love all the traveling I've been able to do with my job. I've seen some incredible parts of the world and I'm thankful for that every day.
PS: What's your dream modeling gig?
MS: I think every model's dream is to walk for Victoria's Secret, and mine is no different! It would be a life-changing experience.
PS: What is the best career advice you've ever gotten?
MS: I think the best career advice I've ever gotten is to remember my worth. There was a time I felt being included was enough as I had longed to feel that way, but now I know that I'm a benefit to any commercial company, I bring exposure and create a more inclusive environment. And just like any other professional person, I am commercially viable.
PS: Who is your favorite supermodel?
MS: Karlie Kloss. She is amazing and beautiful, and she advocates for some very prevalent and important issues, which I love. She also empowers young women, which is so important!
PS: Who are your biggest role models? Why?
MS: My mum is my biggest role model in so many different ways. She's my best friend, and none of this would be possible without her. She's not only the strongest woman I know, but she's also the most loving person in the world. She has taught me everything I know and shown me how to be the best person I can be. She taught me that kindness is beauty and that if I'm kind, I'm the most beautiful girl in the world. She reminds me every day that I am strong, loved, and beautiful. I love her more than anything.
PS: What projects are you working on now?
MS: I have some very exciting things happening at the moment! I've just finished two social media campaigns with Aldo and Diesel. I'm the ambassador for Carnival Cruise lines P&O cruises for Fashion at Sea, where I'll be doing fashion shows and meet-and-greets on two of their ships. And I'm also starting a huge campaign with PopSockets. Next year we have some huge projects that are just being finalized, so it looks like I'll have a very busy year of traveling the globe again. Stay tuned on my social media to keep up to date with any announcements.
7 Times the Lottery Curse Was Broken
We've all heard the lottery horror stories about winners who had it all and lost it. From bankruptcy and jail time to murder, many lottery winners seem to be cursed with bad luck - or maybe just bad judgment.
Fortunately, a sunnier side to lottery stories exists. Some winners have done great things with their winnings, and others have wisely chosen to employ experts to help them manage the lump of cash they lucked into. Below are seven lottery stories that prove winning the lottery can be a blessing, not a curse!
- Allen and Violet Large Donated All Their Winnings
This Canadian couple made headlines in 2010 not only for winning $11.2 million in the lottery, but also for giving most of it away. When the pair, in their 70s at the time, received the money, they decided that others needed it more. After setting up their family members financially, the Larges chose to donate the majority of their winnings to hospitals and other charitable organizations.
- Colin and Christine Weir Gave to Their Community and Children in Need
While known to splurge every now and then, this Scottish couple has given large amounts over the years to causes that moved them. Since winning about $250 million in 2011, the two have made notable donations to a little girl with cerebral palsy, a promising young artist, and a child in need of a prosthetic limb. They also gave their house to their neighbor, who was a teen mother, and contributed countless dollars to fund causes in their community through the Weir Charitable Trust.
- Jim and Carolyn McCullar Planned For Future Generations
In 2011, Jim and Carolyn McCullar, from a small town in Washington state, won half of a $380 million prize in the Mega Millions lottery. The couple, who claimed their part of the second-largest jackpot in US history at the time, took the win in stride. Instead of blowing the money all at once or planning extravagant trips around the world, the McCullars said they planned on using the money to give future generations of their family comfortable lives.
- Louise White Hired Legal Help and Established a Trust
Eighty-one-year-old Louise White walked away with around $210 million in 2012, after claiming a lump-sum prize from the $336 million Rhode Island Powerball lottery jackpot. White decided not to detail her exact plans for the money. She did indicate that it would make her family happy, and also hired legal help and safely deposited the winnings in a trust named after the sherbet she bought alongside her winning ticket.
- Les Robins Founded a Day Camp For Children
When Les Robins won the $111 million jackpot in 1993, it was the highest Powerball jackpot to date. It's likely that his background as a middle school teacher inspired Robins to use a large portion of his winnings to build a day camp for children.
- Jim Dancy Gave It All Away
Jim Dancy didn't break any lottery-winning records when he claimed $10,000 in the Michigan Lottery's Club Keno game, but he warmed many hearts when he chose to donate all of his winnings to Greater Kalamazoo United Way instead of keeping any for himself.
- Ed Nabors Went Fishing
One winner, former Georgia truck driver Ed Nabors, decided to take a simpler route than most when he claimed half of a $390 million prize. He chose to call it a day and go fishing.
Do NOT Roast Your Turkey Without Trying This Foil Hack
When I visited Butterball to participate in turkey-roasting training, I learned a fascinating trick: this "coil of foil." As a turkey roasts, you want all that hot air circulating around as much of the bird as possible, so the bird cooks faster and more evenly. To do that, the turkey needs to be elevated off the bottom of a roasting pan. While some seasoned cooks may own a roasting rack to get the job done, I, like many, don't. But that's OK because it can be hacked with a "coil of foil."
Simply take a large piece of heavy-duty foil, crunch it into a long tube shape, and press it into a ring shape. Then place it inside your roasting dish. Be sure to spray it down with cooking spray or oil (along with the tray itself) before placing your turkey on top. Hello, golden skin and perfectly cooked turkey!
