The 1 Marriage Mistake You Might Be Making
You may question my opinion on marriage when you hear that I am divorced, but I often find that those of us who have tried something and failed bring a lot to the table in terms of perspective and advice. And after numerous rounds of marriage counseling, time spent thinking about why my marriage failed and what part both my ex and I had to play in this failure, I have a whole new way of looking at marriage than when I first said "I do." Despite everything, I still 100 percent believe in marriage and love. I see couples all the time that remind me that marriage can be lovely. And then I see couples that should be happy, but they're not. There are no major issues, but they seem to exist in misery.
When you're unhappily married or having minor marital issues, you're not typically announcing it to people. It's like a dirty secret. Who wants to say that her happily ever after stinks? But here's the good news: while there are indeed quite a few people in hopelessly bad marriages, most are perfectly capable of happiness. And I am here to say as someone who lived through this that there is one costly mistake you may be making in your marriage that is causing friction. In fact, you may be doing this mistake without even realizing it. And you may be doing this even if you're in a relatively happy marriage.
Do you find yourself nagging your partner a lot? Or do you find yourself saying how your partner never does X or always does Y? For example, does your husband never clean up after himself? Do you frequently vent about this issue, whatever it is? Is it a constant fight between the two of you? If you answered yes, that's the mistake I'm talking about.
Too often, people focus on what their partners are doing wrong rather than what they're doing right. Even though it would be preferable and polite for your messy husband to pick up after himself, in the large scheme of things, is he doing things mostly right? Every single person in this world has flaws. When we sign up to marry someone, we're basically signing this invisible document that says, "When exchanging vows with person X, you must tolerate his or her flaws, and remember the good every day despite the fact that person X may be utterly annoying at times" - sign at the X. It's all too common that over time as people get comfortable and take each other for granted, these little tiny issues become large in our mind and we forget to savor what our partner does so well because we're focusing on that one thing he or she can't do right. Fixing this issue takes two steps. The first one is realizing you're doing it if you don't already. The second is how to stop and what issues are worth letting go . . . and what aren't.
Are You Slamming Your Partner Too Much?
How often do you point out to friends, co-workers, and maybe even family what your partner is doing wrong? Do you frequently get irritated with your partner? Are you nagging your partner constantly? Do you resent him over these flaws of his? Do you hold back sex or affection? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are most likely focusing on your partner's flaws too much.
What Issues Are Not Worth Letting Go
If your partner is abusive verbally, physically, or emotionally . . . you cannot let this slide! If he's cheating, reckless with money, or abusing substances . . . he's not a keeper! If he's mean to the kids and irresponsible with their care . . . you've got a real big problem. These are issues that should be taken seriously.
Issues You Should Let Slide
Is he messy (not a hoarder, but simply messy)? Is he bad with romance, planning dates, or just average in bed? (Yes, I said that.) Is he overwhelmed at times when handling the kids? Is he forgetful? Does the concept of folding laundry befuddle him? These are the issues you should let slide. Most likely, you knew he was this way when you said "I do." For all the times he left the clothes in the dryer, I bet if you focused on it, you could find another 50 times that he was there for you as your husband.
How to Stop
First, why are you obsessing over these small issues? Are you happy with yourself and where you two are as people and parents? I found that my ex and I tended to be harder on each other when we were feeling down about ourselves or our circumstances like money issues, unemployment periods, and pregnancy loss. The reality for both of us was that we were dissatisfied with situations in our life, and instead of placing accurate blame, at times we made each other the fall guy for our unhappiness. If you aren't happy with yourself, you may unintentionally pick at your partner. It's time to get yourself back to happiness, and that may mean seeing a counselor.
Have you gotten too comfortable, or are you simply bored? Sometimes we take our partners for granted because like our favorite pair of yoga pants, he has been there forever. And in case you didn't get the memo, marriage can be utterly boring sometimes. It's not like when you were dating and dealing with the intense roller coaster of love. Perhaps you need to invest in some alone time with your man. Maybe it's time to even spice things up sexually a bit. Or why not try a new hobby or activity with your partner? We all get in marriage ruts from time to time. The trick is to snap out of it when it's happening. I tried to pull my ex out of the rut we got in, but he was resistant. Don't resist. Be open to change.
Take five minutes a day to reflect on what your main squeeze does right, and tell him! If you start to share not only your complaints but also your compliments, imagine the return you will get from this. Consider these compliments as deposits in your marriage. Every time you have something good to say, you're investing in your partner. Every time you have something bad to say, you're withdrawing. Put nagging in the category of "something bad to say" as well. I nagged too much at times . . . when I should have let it go or not bothered to beat a dead horse. Nagging is often destructive and doesn't get your guy to do what you want. But when you share with your partner something great he did and focus on all he does bring to the table, I guarantee he will step up to the plate more and more. That was something my ex failed to do. I didn't get positive feedback, and it hurt me deeply until I started to withdraw. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy when we focus on the negative in our partner: the more we tell them these things, perhaps the more the person starts to believe he or she is bad, and possibly even "become" what we have envisioned. It's not good for your partner's self-esteem, and it's a negative place for you to be in.
At the end of the day, marriage means waking up each day and saying, "Even if you drive me crazy, I love you too much to be without you, so I'll just let you make me slightly insane." Reflect on all the wonderful things your partner brings to the marriage, and I promise the small things won't seem so "big" anymore.

In Case You're Wondering, Divorce Doesn't Always Get Easier
Many people think that once you sign those divorce papers, you're home free, that your past can stay in the past, that you can fully move on. But unfortunately, that's not always the case. It's especially true if you have kids together, because when there are kids involved, you're tied to that person for the rest of your life. Somewhat recently I was at dinner for a work event surrounded by other women. As the conversation usually does, it turned to kids, marriage, and dating. When I mentioned I was divorced, another woman at the table was quick to share her own experience as a divorced mom. She went into a whole story about the crazy she deals with on a regular basis regarding her ex. Another guest at the table was quick to say, "Jesus! You're divorced, what's left to fight about? You need to get over it."
It was hard not to see red. It was hard not to pounce and put her in her place. Because you can totally be over it, in terms of the relationship, but still deal with headaches from the dynamic. Instead, I bit my tongue and through somewhat gritted teeth said, "I'm sorry, did you say you were divorced, too?" She said no, and I gave her one of those "then perhaps you should keep your mouth shut" looks with a smile, and she backed off. Divorce is one of those things that's hard to even imagine unless you've spent time in the mucky trenches.
Even if both parties move on and live happily ever after, there's still baggage in the form of history and triggers. The longer you were together, the more there are. Those don't just disappear into thin air because you signed a legal document.
I've been divorced for several years. Enough time to get remarried and have a second child, but there are still days where I end up with a migraine from dealing with the divorce shrapnel. Parenting is hard enough on a good day with both parents living happily under the same roof. So when you throw the divorce dynamic into the mix, it complicates things on a whole other level. There are inherent and undeniable challenges that accompany co-parenting, big and small.
Kids leave a specific shirt they need for school at the other parent's house. Homework is left on their desk at Mom's when they're spending the night at Dad's. There's a birthday party for your friend's kid on your ex's weekend. You can't find the field trip permission slip due today because it's been taken out of the backpack so many times already and it's now lost. Schedules, no matter how consistent, are still a mess when you're navigating one kid between two households. Sometimes kids play both sides against each other. And guess what? Sometimes a kid is tired and just doesn't want to do the shuffle, and that creates a different set of heart-wrenching challenges.
These little logistical hiccups can pile up and make you feel like you're losing your mind. And that's when everything is peaceful! Just wait until there's a difference of opinion between you and your ex, or a sh*tty mood or argument, and then you're dealing with maddening aggravation. In theory, it seems as if everything should magically be status quo. And you know what? Sometimes it is! But sometimes it's a sh*t show, and it doesn't matter how long the ink on the divorce papers has been dry.
Let's be real: people don't typically get divorced because they like each other and are in a good place. They end their marriage because it's no longer possible for them to be in a healthy, functioning, happy home together. So even if both parties move on and live happily ever after alone or with other people, there's still baggage in the form of history and triggers. The longer you were together, the more there are. Those don't just disappear into thin air because you signed a legal document. Some days buttons are pressed and you want to scream, and some days all is quiet on the home front and you're like old pals. It's a curious mix that becomes your new baseline, and in an odd way, you get used to it.
If you do remarry or end up in another relationship, and even have more children, now you have a blended family. You count your blessings and embrace your new family dynamic and simultaneously realize that it brings a slew of different complications to the table. You have multiple children - siblings - who do not live under the same roof seven days a week. That's when the mom guilt really sets in and makes a divorce feel even more obvious.
Even with a divorce that's ancient history, you may continue to feel the residual effects. There are days it feels small and days it feels harder to be divorced than it was to be in a failing marriage. It's one of those parts of ending a marriage that nobody talks about. And while it may feel like an entire lifetime since your marriage and subsequent divorce, there are moments that can bring acrimonious nonsense to the surface and frustrate the hell out of you.
You learn to breathe a lot. You find things that bring you back to your sane place - maybe it's a girls' dinner, an hour-long b*tch session with your best friend, your new partner reminding you how great life is, wine, yoga, or kissing your babies and trying to let go of the bullsh*t and remember every day is a new day.
You can't just snap your fingers and will everything to be sunshine and roses after a divorce. But you can learn to roll with the ever-changing waters. Riding the rough waves and reveling in the waters when they're peaceful. And you can take it day-by-day and remind yourself that life is filled with complications that provide teachable moments and strength, and most of all, that the good always outshines the ugly. Always.

This Woman Was Reunited With Her Husky More Than 2 Years After He Was Stolen, and It's Pure Bliss
While going through chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2013, Kameroun Mares adopted a Husky puppy she named Semper Fidelis, or "always faithful" in Latin. The dog with the fitting name kept Kameroun company during a difficult time in her life, until an unforeseen move that was only supposed to separate the pair temporarily resulted in Semper and Kameroun being apart for more than two years. In 2016, Kameroun had to move from Florida to California for a round of treatments, and her roommate had agreed to keep an eye on Semper. Her roommate called right before Kameroun moved to California permanently to tell her that Semper had gone missing, and a heartbroken Kameroun began a long, bicoastal search for her dog.
"For a year, I continued searching while in California, posting up fliers via pet sites, calling 15 vet places around were I used to live over there about him, calling the humane societies about him, shelters," Mares told The Dodo. "[I] posted info about him on Facebook, lost dog forums, and pages and groups. Every day I waited for a phone call about someone finding him ... His microchip is registered to me since he was 3 months [old] . . . yet I received nothing. I was worried sick about him and missed him dearly."
After having no luck, the persistent dog owner contacted Ana Campos, a personal investigator, who discovered that there was another owner's name on Semper's chip after buying him on Craigslist for $200. The chip company never called Kameroun. She decided to get a lawyer to help her get her pup back in her arms, and thankfully, the judge ruled in her favor.
"The Sheriff's office seized the dog this morning returning him to the person who always had superior ownership rights," Ana wrote on a video she posted to Facebook of Kameroun and Semper's reunion on Oct. 18. "It was a great day."
See the emotional reunion above - it'll make you want to hold your own pets tight and never let go.
I Put Ice Cubes in My Dryer Instead of Ironing My Clothes, and the Result Blew My Mind
Although I own an iron and ironing board, they've pretty much been collecting dust in my closet over the years, and I've never been happier. Through a really "cool" hack (pun intended, and you'll understand it in just a moment) I've learned to do with my dryer, I haven't had to iron in years. And nope, I'm really not kidding!
By simply placing two to three ice cubes in your dryer and setting it on high heat for just a few minutes, the wrinkles in your clothes smooth out. By doing this, your dryer is essentially steaming your clothes, because the ice cubes melt into water, and it becomes hot enough to create steam. The steam mixed with the hot temperature takes the place of what an iron does. Just try not to overload your dryer, because this hack works best when you're working with just a few articles of clothing.
This fantastic hack is perfect if you are in a rush, busy, or if, like me, you hate ironing with a passion. When you have endless loads of laundry to do with kids, this can seriously save your sanity. And unlike other "hacks" that don't live up to the hype, this tested method actually works.
Good News, Family: I Won't Ever Make You Wear Matching Holiday Pajamas
As a mom who has a tendency to get carried away with ideas for how my family should run, I force my kid and my husband to do a lot of things they probably don't want to do. While I'm sure my son would much prefer eating lollipops and ice cream for every meal, I try to get him to at least look at a vegetable once in a while. I make everyone stop enjoying an activity so we can pose for family photos to remind us later of the fun we were having before I stopped everything (I swear they thank me later). But one thing I'm never going to do is force them to wear matching holiday pajamas.
If other people love dressing up their family, great. I have no problem with it. Sure, I think it's a little silly, but I'm sure things I do are silly and weird to other people. My reason for avoiding this trendy tradition is that I know for a fact that no one in my family would enjoy it, so why should I force it?
With the vegetables that I force my son to eat, he may not love that I'm practically cramming asparagus down his throat, but his body needs it. Having everyone wear matching pajamas serves no function other than to take uncomfortable and awkward family photos. If it feels forced, it's because it is. Having grown up with websites and memes celebrating life's most awkward moments, there seems to be this knee-jerk reaction to pretend to wear ugly things for the sake of fun, like ugly Christmas sweaters. Twenty years ago, no one would be caught dead in them, but now you can't stumble into Target during the holidays without running into one. Matching pajamas are the same thing.
When you remove the sincerity of matching pajamas or ugly sweaters, it takes away the awkwardness and the supposed fun. Putting the final nail in the pajama coffin, doing it just for an Instagram photo feels so sad. When did we stop hanging out with our family naturally, instead of trying to curate an image for our internet friends?
If wearing matching pajamas - like the above Rudolph set from Amazon - is your family's tradition, great; I support you 100 percent, because I know every family is different. We all have different things we like to do to get us in the holiday spirit, and for my family, matching pajamas are definitely not it.

Hate Halloween? 10 Just-as-Fun Things to Do Instead of Trick-or-Treating
I can't pinpoint exactly when I started to dislike Halloween, but the older I've gotten, the more deeply I loathe the so-called holiday. Between macabre-themed parties, skimpy costumes, and strangers constantly knocking on my door, I'm pretty much over it. I did think that once I had children of my own, I'd start to appreciate it again - the way I did when I was young and trick-or-treating in my mom's handmade costumes - but instead, I find myself trying to convince my husband that our kids won't miss it (he strongly disagrees).
If you are like me and say "boohoo" to Halloween every year instead of just "boo," there's definitely no reason you and your family have to hide out in a dark house as hordes of children in search of processed sugar invade your neighborhood. You can still get out and have a lot of fun - it just won't revolve around death, monsters, or candy. Here are 10 things you can do instead of trick-or-treating this year to enjoy the day in your own way.
This Year's Hottest Toys That Cost Less Than $35, Because Santa Isn't Footing the Bill
If your holiday shopping list includes kids from your extended family or close-knit circle of friends on top of your own children, finding something special and budget-friendly for all of them can be exhausting. Thankfully, some of the year's buzziest toys are incredibly affordable and easily accessible (even Target is offering free, two-day shipping!). We combed through our favorite toys for kids of all ages to make this year's holiday shopping much more manageable.
I'm a Mom of 3 - Is It Really the Most Stressful Number of Kids to Have?
A 2013 survey claiming that women who have three children are the most stressed has found itself, once again, at the center of discussion. The survey, which reached 7,164 moms in the United States, found that women who had three children rated their stress levels at an 8.5 out of 10. That's a lot of stress! Now, if you're a mom of two who is expecting baby number three (or if you're like I was, a mom of one expecting babies two and three), don't freak out just yet. Because I'm here to tell you that this study should be taken with a grain of salt. Because having three any number of kids comes with a certain degree of stress.
After I brought my first baby home from the hospital, I stressed. I didn't know what to do with her and found myself googling things like "how to play with a newborn." I stressed after I fell asleep with her on my chest and when I thought I was pumping too much milk because that obviously meant she wasn't getting enough. But within a few short, sleep-deprived days, I stopped stressing. I felt my instincts kicking in, and I knew that everything was going to be alright. My baby and my body would let me know exactly what we needed, and all I had to do was listen and obey.
As far as I can tell, how stressed you are has little to do with how many children you have. We're all different. We all have different strengths, weaknesses, hopes, dreams, and fears. We all love our children unconditionally and want what's best for them.
I stuck with that approach for the next three-and-a-half years, and it worked for us. So when I found out that I was expecting twins, I hoped to continue it. I'll admit that I didn't get off to a good start. I immediately started freaking out about a plethora of things: carrying two babies to term, how my daughter was going to handle her new role, what was going to happen to my body, how I was going to make the nursery work with two of everything, and so much more. Most of the things I started stressing over were trivial, but that didn't stop them from plaguing my overly hormonal brain for the next several months. But things always have a way of working themselves out. At 37 weeks, I was begging my doctor to bump up my scheduled C-section date, my daughter couldn't wait to meet her new sisters, I accepted the fact that my body would be forever changed, and the nursery looked just fine. Once my babies were finally home, I was pretty much back to my nonstressing self.
I've been doing this parenting thing for over four years now by the seat of my pants. I make mistakes and anticipate making many more of them in the years to come. Hopefully none of them irrevocably screw up my children. And while I do find myself stressing out here and there, it's usually over something small like getting out the door on time. I don't know if I'm some freak of nature because I don't let a lot of things get me down, but I'm pretty confident that three is not the magic stress number some claim it is.
Almost all of my friends are moms. Every single one of them stresses every now and again, because being a parent to any number of children will do that to you. Some stress more than others, like my friend who can barely hold it together with one kid. More often than not, she calls me in tears because babies are hard. I have another friend who's afraid to venture to the grocery store with all three of her children at once ("I only have two hands for two kids!") and another who absolutely cannot (or will not) leave the house with her children unless she has backup with her.
On the other hand, my best friend is exactly like me. She had her daughter followed by a set of twins, and she handles life like a freaking rock star. Another close friend started out with twins before adding a third and, also like me, doesn't let too much faze her. And another friend has four kids and is even more laid back than I am.
As far as I can tell, how stressed you are has little to do with how many children you have. I have friends on both ends of the spectrum and everywhere in between. We're all different. We all have different strengths, weaknesses, hopes, dreams, and fears. We all love our children unconditionally and want what's best for them and for us. And sometimes, we all need a little extra support. And that's OK. If there's one thing I've learned as a parent, it's that it truly takes a village. And when you need that extra something, your village will be there, ready and willing to help.
21 Reasons 2 Kids Is the Perfect Number
It seems like everyone I know is having more kids than me. Two parents, two kids has always seemed like a solid, rational equation to me, but I might now be in the minority in this thought. My neighborhood is filled with families with three, four, even five kids. My best friends from college all had their first and second kids around the same time as I did, then surprised me with their desire to keep procreating.
"Really? Are you sure?" was my reaction when one of my best friends told me she was trying for number three. (Luckily, she loves me despite my lack of a verbal filter.) I love my kids, but I've never felt that itch for just one more. Two, not three, is my magic number, and this baby-making factory is officially closed.
Read through for 21 reasons two is the perfect number of kids for me.
- The thought of being outnumbered by tiny people in my home terrifies me.
- I already spend a large percentage of my life dealing with other people's hygiene. I have hit my nail-clipping, diaper-changing, bath-giving limit.
- My children both require an adult to spend at least an hour reading them books and lying next to them before they'll let themselves fall asleep. Who would deal with number three at bedtime?
- Pregnancy and I are not friends. The first one was bad, the second was worse, and I can't imagine number three.
- I don't have space for a second washer and dryer, and I'm pretty sure another kid would require two loads going at all times.
- I have already lost two years of my life to sleep deprivation. My antiaging creams can only do so much.
- I hate sippy cups. I can't produce another child who will need more sippy cups.
- I hate bottles even more.
- My boobs look sad enough after two rounds of breastfeeding, thank you very much.
- I already gave away my good baby stuff and donated the so-so stuff, and who wants to buy all the stuff again?
- How many beds can one human make each day? And, damn it, I like the beds in my house made!
- This morning, I had to tackle my 2-year-old son and hold him down to get a diaper on him, and during the process, he threw a succession of board books at my head. What if the next one would be even crazier?
- Two kids fighting is loud and annoying enough. Three or more? Torture.
- I don't want a minivan and I buy too much sh*t at Target to keep my SUV's third row up all the time. Until my oldest can sit shotgun, I just don't have the car space.
- I want to be involved in my kids' classrooms, but with more than two, I'm fairly certain I wouldn't even be able to remember their teachers' names.
- I need alone time. I don't get it now, and I'm sure more kids wouldn't help the situation.
- I love to travel to new places, but airfare for five-plus, multiple hotel rooms, and the thought of flying with that many kids means I'd be grounded for decades.
- My huge couch only seats four (OK, it would probably seat five, but I like to stretch out).
- I can't afford to buy any more iPads, then replace their cracked screens, then replace them again.
- My husband and I believe in the divide-and-conquer method of parenting, but more than two kids would mean one of us would always feel shafted, and I'm betting most of the time, it would be me.
- Kids mean chaos, and while a little chaos is good, there's only so much this mom can take.
Modern Family Kills Off [SPOILER] in Emotional Halloween Episode
We can all breathe a deep, deep sigh of relief: Jay Pritchett's beloved pup, Stella, made it through the latest episode of Modern Family alive! The episode, "Good Grief," does, however, reveal the unlucky human who bids the show a permanent goodbye, so stop reading now if you haven't watched yet.
Spoilers ahead!
The news that someone would die in an upcoming episode of Modern Family was first reported back in September, with cocreator Christopher Lloyd revealing that the series would be "handling some bigger life events" over the course of season 10. Within the first few minutes of the Halloween-themed episode, which aired on Wednesday night, we discovered that DeDe (recurring guest star Shelley Long), Jay's ex-wife and Claire and Mitchell's mother, is the one who passes away.
Claire finds out the news from DeDe's husband, who tells her that her mother had a heart condition that she didn't want anyone in the family to know about. Apparently DeDe died peacefully in her sleep while on a trip with her women's group and was found clutching a 10-page list of notes for the housekeeping staff (naturally). Even though DeDe hasn't been a constant presence on the show - she's popped up in just seven episodes over the years - Long's performance remains one of the ABC comedy's most memorable.
Perhaps the only thing more surprising than the fact that Modern Family is still going strong 10 seasons later is that the comedy series - which is typically full of lighthearted, zany antics from the Dunphy clan - killed off one of its characters. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter after the episode aired, cocreator and coshowrunner Steve Levitan explained the writing room's decision.
"We gather [with the writers] at the beginning of the season and talk about the big arcs and things that we want to have happen - the milestone moments," he said. "It occurred to us that death is a giant part of the family experience, and while Phil (Ty Burrell) had lost his mother in a previous episode, we've never seen the entire family have to deal with such a loss. It seemed like an interesting thing to have happen."

The series (which has already scored a season three pickup) looks just as colorful and sharply funny as ever and is set to start streaming on Amazon on Dec. 5. "Forget your troubles and just get happy" as you watch the official trailer above!

Billy Eichner and Tiffany Haddish Go on History's Most Hilarious Witch Hunt in NYC
Billy Eichner's latest episode of Billy on the Street is easily his funniest in quite some time (no offense, Emma Stone). The American Horror Story alum took to the streets of NYC with Tiffany Haddish by his side, where the two went in search of a third, "diverse" witch to complete their imaginary remake of Hocus Pocus. After hilariously turning down a straight white man with a loud "NEXT," Eichner and Haddish had a series of interactions that should go into the Billy on the Street hall of fame: Eichner shouting things like, "Chinese lesbian witch! Crazy witch Asians!" and Haddish breaking it down on the sidewalk, for instance. Watch the episode above, and then check out Eichner's outing with Julianne Moore in case you're still in the mood to laugh.
Kesha Drops a Powerful Political Anthem Just in Time For the Midterm Elections
This week, Kesha dropped a new song! The track is called "Here Comes the Change," and it's attached to the incredible new Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic, On the Basis of Sex. If you hadn't already guessed, Kesha sings all about empowerment, doing good, making an impact, and causing a shift in the tides of change. The black-and-white video features the songstress dancing around, bare-faced and barefoot, in an empty house. It's also interspersed with inspiring footage of the film, which hits theaters this Christmas.
Despite the fact that Kesha wrote the song for the film, and the film focuses on the first leg of the decades-long fight for gender equality, it's not hard to see how the words apply to today's political climate. The the midterm elections are fast on the approach, and the subject matter of the film is clearly still quite relevant in 2018 - lest we forget the whole Brett Kavanaugh ordeal that's still quite fresh in everyone's mind. So, you know, we'll be listening to this one on repeat while doing exactly what the song suggests: trying to institute a positive change.

How The Haunting of Hill House Pulled Off That Incredible Funeral Home Episode
If you've already succumbed to a gut-wrenching binge of The Haunting of Hill House, chances are you're still trying to unravel all the tiny details that make the show so special. And yet, for all the subtleties contained therein - like the Crain siblings' metaphorical significance - there's one brilliant thing fans of the show seemed to have honed in on from the get-go: the sixth episode of the show. I'm sure you remember the beautiful drama of this particular chapter. In the present day, all of the Crain siblings have finally reunited for Nell's funeral. In the past, the family huddles together while a superstorm ravages the haunted house. But it's not just the beats of the story that make the episode that stand out, it's that the episode seems to play out through one long, glorious take.
As it turns out, this was a very deliberate move on the part of creator Mike Flanagan, who wanted to add a lot of gravity to the moment all the siblings are together under one roof. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, he went into great detail and explained how they pulled it off. As you might have guessed, they didn't just churn out the episode overnight. Instead, it took more than a month of careful planning, intense choreography, and hard work. And it's fascinating.
In the interview, Flanagan revealed that the idea had been a part of the project all along, even from the very first pitch meeting. When it came to actually executing the idea, the first order of business was rehearsal. Weeks and weeks of rehearsal.
We wrote all of the camera choreography into the script for the episode, back before we started production . . . We rehearsed it with our second team stand-ins, who basically performed the entire episode as actors for about five weeks straight, every day. We had shut down production and we just rehearsed with them, with the crew, and kept running it and running it and running it. After a month of that, we brought the cast in and we were able to show them the episode. We had shot it with the second team. So we said, "Here it is and this is what we're doing," and then the cast had two weeks with us in rehearsal. We kind of looked at it like live TV. Ultimately, it's five long shots and we did one a day for five days. It almost killed us. It almost killed everybody.
Flanagan also revealed that 200 people had a hand in making the episode happen, who all had to coordinate and work in perfect harmony with one another. "I'm really glad that it's being received the way it is, because that was the hardest and riskiest and scariest thing I think any of us on that stage had ever done."
For all the nail-biting and hand-wringing, Flanagan also revealed that the episode was a lot of fun. He spoke about one particular moment, when Hugh is in the funeral parlor and his adult children become little kids again before his eyes. "It was hysterical. If you step out of frame, it's hilarious, and the kids were all crouched down and hiding in the intake room right next to them, and they would just sprint into place. And while they're doing that, in the background you're watching crew frantically pull out this dummy of Victoria Pedretti from the casket to help little Violet climb in her place. So we were doing all these off-camera switches."
Then there was another fun one: when Olivia (the mom) is going through the halls and the statues appear to be turning their heads, watching her go around. "[It] looks really cool, except that when you see the crew members hiding behind the wall carrying statues that all have different head positions and frantically diving into frame to get them there before the camera turns back around, it's funny."
In another perplexing shot, the camera seems to be in the middle of the grand foyer, and it seamlessly floats as Olivia and Hugh, the Crain parents, descend from the second floor to the first. "We built an elevator and suspended it from the ceiling. It's out of frame for the rest of the shot, but it would have to lower in while we were with them in the hall, and then the steady cam op just steps onto it," Flanagan revealed. "It lowered into the floor. He stepped out and then it went right back up to the ceiling so he could turn around and it would be gone." Damn. That's wild.
"It was a circus, and it was the weirdest thing for me and for [cinematographer Michael Fimognari], because typically we're really involved in a given take," Flanagan continued. "But with this, all of our work was up front and all we could do was sit at the monitor and watch, and there was just nothing we could do anymore. Usually about halfway through a take, if it looked like we had a chance to get it, we would just grip the armrests and I think I held my breath for the last three minutes of that third segment, which is our longest . . . it was just panic, but it really worked out."
So, there you have it. Luckily, the hard work of Flanagan and the rest of the crew hasn't gone unnoticed. It's one of the most brilliant episodes of television that I've seen in a long time.
Watching Pink and Her Daughter Sing Together Is Enough to Melt Even the Coldest of Hearts
It looks like Pink's daughter, Willlow Hart, is already following in her mother's musically talented footsteps. The 7-year-old teamed up with her superstar mom to record a cover of the song "A Million Things" for The Greatest Showman - Reimagined, an upcoming companion album for the 2017 hit movie, and she totally knocked it out of the park. In a sweet behind-the-scenes video from their recording studio session, Willow puts her pure voice on display while singing the entire first verse on her own as Pink coaches her along before taking the helm. Seeing this precious mother-daughter duo work together and goof off is surely enough to melt even the coldest of hearts into a warm pile of mush.

Gordon Ramsay's Transformative Way to Scramble Eggs
Yes, there are a million different scrambled eggs techniques out there, but Gordon Ramsay's will be your full-stop method. While at a press event to promote his game with Glu Mobile, I asked chef Ramsay to go through the proper way to scramble eggs. His unique method has a heartwarming tale:
"After training in London, I wanted to become French, so I went to the birthplace of all cuisine. I remember seeing this amazing dish with scrambled eggs and sea urchin. I tasted the sea urchin through the scrambled eggs . . . and they topped it with caviar. I thought it was wild. I had never put sea urchin in scrambled eggs. The texture was just incredible. It made it so much creamier. What was more accessible to the average person at home making scrambled eggs - I knew that was crème fraiche. I perfected that craft in France making scrambled eggs to order, standing in Guy Savoy's restaurant behind the line as a 22-year-old."
But crème fraiche isn't the only thing that makes these scrambled eggs different from the rest. It's cooked in a pot! The eggs aren't seasoned from the start! Most of the cooking is done off the flame! Are you baffled yet? Me too, which is why I had to try the method out for myself. So where to begin? Start by watching Gordon's YouTube video. He shared a hilarious story about it:
I think there's about 15 million people online who have [watched] that scrambled eggs video. And it transforms the way you eat eggs. Incredible. It's a kind of rich, sumptuous way to eat scrambled eggs even for dinner, even with all the steps. It's just delicious on sourdough bread. My video, with 15 million downloads on YouTube, I burn the f*cking toast. I'm not so far down my backside. I make mistakes. I just start again. It's funny. I'm so into my scrambled eggs, focusing away. Fire alarm is going off and I burn my toast."
Like Gordon, my first attempt didn't go off hitch-free. I'm unfortunately going to need a few more practices to end up with perfectly custardy, voluminous eggs like Gordon, but what I did make was truly exceptional and unlike any scrambled eggs I've ever had before. I can't wait to keep on practicing, and neither will you once you've memorized the steps.

This Guy's Insight on What It's Like to Be Colorblind Is Equal Parts Funny and Thoughtful
Storyteller and humorist Bryan Kett broke down what it's really like to be colorblind in a thoughtful TEDx talk delivered in Pasadena, CA, in September. After diving into the science behind colorblindness, he explained the complexities of the condition, touching on his own experience while sharing some hilarious anecdotes. "What I'm wearing right now took an entire team of professionals to assemble," he said. "Apparently these pants are burgundy, which I'm told is quite bold and quite stylish." Later, he joked, "I have a hard time knowing when meat is properly cooked, so I just play it safe and burn everything."
In between funny stories, though, Kett delved into cultural takes on color, how being colorblind has affected his perspective, and why he's excited for what's next. Check out the full clip above to hear about his unique outlook - and get in a few laughs.

I Gave the Bucket Hat Trend a Try, and I've Gotta Say, I'm Sort of a Fan Now
I'm a sucker for trying out new trends. Biker shorts? Tried it. Dealing with my fear of mom jeans? Done it. Pretending to be royalty and dressing up as Kate Middleton for a day? Yep, been there! So, when I saw that bucket hats were suddenly back, you better believe I started dreaming up ways to incorporate this retro piece into my wardrobe.
Funny story: I actually wore my Golf Le Fleur x Converse bucket hat earlier this year, and all my friends poked fun at me saying things like, "Off to vacation in the '90s, I see?" Ironically, everyone now wants to know how to give it a try after seeing it on the Spring 2019 runways at shows like Anna Sui and 3.1 Phillip Lim.
I ended up choosing three different styles of bucket hats - including a vintage Gucci hat from What Goes Around Comes Around ($650), my Golf Le Fleur sherpa hat, and a super cute plaid style from Bybabba ($40) - to really push myself out of my comfort zone and have fun with it.
My overall verdict is that the trend shockingly easy to style. Did I take myself seriously in some of these outfits? Nah. But, more importantly, did I have fun and would I wear them again? Hell yeahhh. Read on to see three easy ways I styled my bucket hats.
