My Mom Took Over My Dating Life - Here's What Happened
This story is about Summer, my sweet, heartwarming, love-loving mother. At 5'6" and [AGE REDACTED], she's still a natural blonde who believes in regular exercise, plant-based diets, and daily meditation. We're alike in our effervescent joy and propensity for fun. I get my optimistic glee from my mom and my fear of not doing my homework from my dad. We differ in that I grew up to live in a big city, work in a tall building, and pay big money for small closet space. She grew up to raise animals, teach Sunday school, and take great pleasure in spending time in nature. Summer is a kinder, more vulnerable, and more honest version of me, without such a harsh adult exoskeleton.
As many moms would be, she was thrilled at the notion of this takeover. You could practically hear her cracking her knuckles all the way in San Diego while she set up camp at the computer. Using her preferred dating platform, Match.com, she set about setting me up.
Dating App Profile
Here's how I describe myself on dating apps: "Equal parts Reese Witherspoon and Amy Schumer. 5'4"." That's it. A dear friend blessed me with this flattering description, and my circle of cohorts wholeheartedly agree on its accuracy. It's got plenty of context and applies to both looks and personality. Summer didn't hate it, but she wanted more, so here's what she added:
"My friends describe me as equal parts Reese Witherspoon and Amy Schumer. I'm living my dream life here in San Francisco. My work as a senior director in communications and public relations is thrilling and challenging and I love it. I enjoy people and so many of the activities going on here in the city. If you are outgoing, have a strong leadership personality, and know how to enjoy life, you just may be my prince charming."
Aside from the two promotions she handed me and the line about prince charming, it wasn't bad, but it was far more emphatic and revealing than I'd venture to be if this were all up to me. It wasn't, so I let Summer introduce me to a few folks.
My Mom's Openers
We agreed that she was in charge of selecting the guys and sending them an initial opener. If they responded, I'd take over the conversation and aim to set up a date. Overall, her introductions were really something. Here are a handful of my favorites:
- "I love your name and the meaning of it. It feels like it fits you, do you love it?" (I took the liberty of googling his name, and it turns out there are two meanings. Depending on who you ask, it either means "powerful" or "blackness and sorrow." Luckily, his name was the first.)
- "I like your profile. How did you ever get to hold a koala bear?" (This pick wasn't bad, and I'd actually already gone on a date with this guy about 18 months ago and ghosted him because he was too into sports. If you're reading this, koala guy, I'm very sorry for the confusion.)
- "I do yoga both at home and at classes. Which do you prefer? Joy in this moment and always." (Literally, what? At first I was frustrated by this, but it's so her that I couldn't help but smile at it.)
She also had a couple renditions of profile flattery. Her strategy was to tell them she liked them without asking a question that might make them feel forced to engage. Instead, she left the ball in their court with statements like these:
- "Enjoyed your profile. Check out mine, and if you feel a connection, I'd love to hear from you."
- "I am enjoying my present moment reading your profile, very nice!"
After a while I asked her to cool it a little, and we settled on aiming for two-word openers like "Hey there" or "Happy Friday!" She wasn't keen on my ideas, but she stuck to shorter opening lines including:
- "I like your sense of humor."
- "You sound fun."
- And my personal favorite, "I'm game."
Mom's Ranking of My Romantic Prospects
My mom likes to joke that if you're going to marry for the wrong reasons, marry for money because looks fade. So perhaps it's no surprise that she deprioritized aesthetics in favor of more lasting qualities, like professionalism and spiritual values.
The mother of an agnostic, gin-loving Netflix-watcher wanted her daughter to date Buddha.
This led to several conversations about dealbreakers, including the fact that just because she wants me to have a spiritual practice does not mean I should be dating someone with one. That was also true of other attributes, including vegetarianism, guys who don't drink, and even those who don't like TV.
That's right, the mother of an agnostic, gin-loving Netflix-watcher wanted her daughter to date Buddha. Things were not looking promising.
The Date My Mom Helped Set Up
During the course of this experiment, my mom picked out a handful of eligible suitors, all of whom were meditators with advanced degrees and professional jobs. A few of them were reasonably pleasant, and finally, after what I thought was way too much back and forth, one of them invited me to have . . . a phone call.
These men weren't my typical tech bros who'd invite me for a drink after four to six messages, engage in two to five dates, then we'd mutually ghost. But we're breaking molds here, so I agreed to this date via teleconference. Here's how that went down. The quotes are the words I said out loud, the parentheses are my thoughts along the way.
*Ring Ring*
Me: "Lisa Holden speaking!" (I'm a millennial, so I only use this feature of my phone for work purposes. I literally do not know how to answer a phone casually.)
Him: "Hey Lisa, it's GuyYourMomWantsYouToMarry, is now still a good time to chat?" (OK great, you're strangely formal on the phone, too.)
Me: "Yep! Great time to chat, I'm all yours!" (Honestly, I would never talk like this in person, why did I just invite this guy to . . . what? Have me? This is how you get taken.)
Him: "Cool, so, I guess the first thing I want to know is how you feel about dating? Are you dating lots of people or just one at a time? I ask because I want to find something real, and I think that's easier to do when you commit as soon as possible." (Sorry, did you just ask me to be exclusive ONE minute into this conference call? If so, I'm flattered, though I will definitely end up declining. But first, the people-pleaser in me will vaguely pretend I'm open to this for a while.)
And off we went, me chatting away about my theories on dating, how people have too many options out there to commit, and how someone who knows what they want is what I'm looking for, but too afraid to actually go for. He talked about what he likes to do and what lights him up, none of which overlapped with my interests. We ended the call after about 30 minutes and agreed to talk again soon. I was mortified I'd been so honest, so when he texted me asking about my passions, I sent him a link to my work right here on POPSUGAR. I've found it's a surefire way to make sure a guy doesn't want to see me again because they fear they're going to get written about. Spoiler: few of them are interesting enough to write about.
Then, shockingly, he responded. He said he wanted to learn more and included the following quote from Rumi, "Set your life on fire and seek out those who fan the flames."
I'm not proud of this, but I ghosted him.
Do I want someone who supports my creative endeavors? Of course I do. Did I have an iota of chemistry with this guy? Sadly, no. But I learned something important during this experiment about openness and intimacy. I never share my writing with guys I date because I'm afraid of scaring them off. What I learned is that not everyone is fearful of a woman who writes about love, and there are men out there with whom I could conceivably be myself. I ended up texting the guy a week later thanking him for the conversation and awesome quote, but gently saying I didn't see us as a match.
Final Thoughts
When I told my mom about it, her response was, "If you don't like him, do you think he's too young for me?" So as it turns out, Summer didn't find my soulmate, but maybe she wasn't really looking for me to begin with.
But as moms do, she taught me an important lesson. Hiding who you really are might feel safer in the dating world, but in the end, showcasing the truest parts of yourself on dates is a better way to go. Moving forward, I'll attempt to bring forth that honest, vulnerable side of myself that I get from Summer in the first place, and who knows, maybe I'll find someone who can deal with (or maybe even celebrates) dating a writer.
If Oprah Knocks on Your Door, Don't Freak Out - She Just Wants You to Vote
When Oprah Winfrey tells you to vote, you vote! The former talk show host went door-to-door in Georgia on Thursday to encourage people to vote for the state's Democratic candidate for governor, Stacey Abrams. In a video posted to her Instagram page, Winfrey is seen knocking on the front door of an unsuspecting fan named Denise who nearly (and very understandably) jumps out of her skin at the sight of the media mogul. Since she's clearly on a mission here, Winfrey gets right to it and asks Denise whether she'll cast a ballot for Abrams in the upcoming election on Nov. 6, to which Denise replies, "I absolutely am," before the video cuts short. In another short clip, Winfrey passes by a woman holding up a sign promoting love and kindness while passing through a neighborhood.
Stacey Abrams is in a tight race against Republican candidate and Georgia's current Secretary of State, Brian Kemp. If Abrams wins the election, she will become the nation's first black female governor. With that information in mind - along with the fact that this gubernatorial race has drawn national attention due to allegations of voter suppression tactics - it's not a shock that Winfrey has spent the better part of this week showing her support for Abrams. So far, she's canvassed neighborhoods, spoken at a rally, and later has plans to attend a town hall. Abrams has also earned the support of former President Barack Obama, former Vice President Joe Biden, and Senator Kamala Harris.

Black Women Are Ready to Be the Face of the Democratic Party - They're Already Its Leaders
Black women have long been the heart and soul of the Democratic Party, but never the face. We've been supporting Democratic policies and candidates for years, but still lack anything close to meaningful representation inside the party and in our elected institutions. But this year's midterm elections have the potential to dramatically launch the party into the future.
We know empowering black women voters and candidates isn't just the right thing to do. It's also the smart thing to do.
Nov. 6, 2018, marks the most important midterm election in decades - maybe even centuries - because our country is at a crucial turning point. Next week, our nation will decide: will we recognize the backslide on civil and human rights and catch ourselves before it's too late, or will we fall deeper into a racist, bigoted autocracy?
The stakes couldn't be higher. That's why the Democratic Party must get this right by ensuring that black women are the leaders of our movement.
This is what we believe at MoveOn, because we know empowering black women voters and candidates isn't just the right thing to do. It's also the smart thing to do.
So far, MoveOn members have directly contributed more than $1 million to black women candidates in small-dollar contributions, showing that voters will support and put their dollars behind these candidates. And in races across the country, whether local or national, rural or urban, North or South, black women aren't just running, they're winning.
Take Stacey Abrams (pictured above) in Georgia. She's a MoveOn-endorsed Democratic candidate who could soon become the first black woman elected governor. Not just in Georgia or in the South, but ever, in any state. Right now, she's neck and neck with her Republican opponent Brian Kemp (who's also overseeing the election as Georgia's secretary of state and is behind the state's recent efforts to purge people - largely black folks - from voter rolls, denying them the right to vote in the 2018 elections).
In Georgia, a Democrat locked in statistical dead heat with a Republican candidate for governor is itself a remarkable feat. In 2016, Georgia voted for Donald Trump by a solid five-point margin. In the 2014 gubernatorial election, Republican Nathan Deal beat Democrat Jason Carter by eight points. Georgia hasn't had a Democratic governor in 15 years. And yet, despite this history, Abrams is slightly ahead of her opponent in recent polling.
As one of the most targeted, underserved, and underrepresented communities in America, black women are well-prepared to tip the scales of injustice back in the favor of all of us.
Abrams is not the only candidate proving that black women are the future of the Democratic Party. Jahana Hayes, 2016 National Teacher of the Year, has a chance to become the state's first-ever black woman to represent Connecticut's 5th Congressional District, where she's already overcome significant obstacles. In her primary, her opponent was backed not only by the state's Democratic Party but also by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Despite the odds stacked against her, she won a clear victory, with 100 of her former students helping staff her campaign. By some measures, she's already won. And now, the only obstacle left between Hayes and Congress is her Republican opponent.
In Boston, there's another black woman running for office and making history. In the primary for Massachusetts's 7th Congressional District, the only minority-majority district in the state, Ayanna Pressley won a race against a 10-term incumbent, upending what many thought was going to be an easy reelection for Mike Capuano. Now, running unopposed in the general election, Pressley is poised to become the first black woman to represent Massachusetts in Congress.
In federal, state, and local elections across the country, black women are running for office - and running to the polls. Black women have been at the forefront of liberation movements, from the Civil Rights Era to reproductive justice to LGBTQ+ rights and the modern Black Lives Matter movement. As one of the most targeted, underserved, and underrepresented communities in America, black women are well-prepared to tip the scales of injustice back in the favor of all of us.
When black women run for office and win, we all win.
If Democrats want to remain a viable option in elections to come, it's time to stop relying on black women to vote to save the Democratic Party - it's well past time for us to lead it.
Karine Jean-Pierre is senior advisor and national spokesperson for MoveOn.

Meghan Markle Ditched Her Heels For These $120 Flats Like a True Mom-to-Be
Heels are cute and all, but sometimes, you just have to give your feet a rest and slip into a comfy pair of flats. No one knows this better than Meghan Markle, who just wrapped up a whirlwind tour that spanned 16 days and featured more outfit changes than we can even comprehend. Early on in her travels with Prince Harry, the mom-to-be made us scream "hell yes!" when she wore the same pair of $145 Rothy's flats not once, but twice in the span of two days, so it was only fitting that she opted for sensible shoes yet again on the final day of her tour.
While visiting the Redwoods Tree Walk in New Zealand, the Duchess of Sussex changed out of the pleated skirt and Manolo Blahnik suede pumps she wore earlier in the day in favor of Prince Harry's puffer jacket (aww!), black skinny jeans, and practical flats from San Francisco-based brand Birdies. The footwear company refers to its shoes as "the stylish flat that's secretly a slipper," so no wonder Meghan saved them for the last leg of her endless journey.
Her classic black flats have quilted insoles and quite the reasonable price tag, ringing up at just $120. Plus, they're still in stock online - score! Ahead, admire Meghan's sensible footwear, and keep reading to shop her exact flats and other similarly comfortable styles.
Priyanka Chopra Wore a Sequined Dress Out in NYC, and I Can't Pick My Jaw Off the Floor
Priyanka Chopra might officially be off the market - she's currently planning her wedding to Nick Jonas - but this week, she celebrated her recent involvement with Bumble in a pretty big way. After a weekend spent celebrating her impending nuptials, the bride-to-be stepped out at the Bumble India launch dinner at New York's Gramercy Park Hotel on Monday.
Priyanka, who's now an investor in the company, wore a dazzling, strapless Sally LaPointe gown complete with sequins and a thigh-high slit that was almost as dramatic as the one seen on the Giorgio Armani slip dress she wore to the Tiffany Blue Book Collection celebration. She pulled back her hair into a messy bun and threw on a pair of see-through pumps, which looked so elegant on her that I wouldn't be surprised if she wore them to her wedding.

This Fall Staple Has Been Around For So Long, You Probably Forgot How to Wear It
We're sure that, at one point, you owned a sweater dress you wore to death, perhaps styled with knee-high boots or tights. Blake Lively's Gossip Girl character Serena van der Woodsen provided more than enough inspiration a few years back, after all. But the one-and-done outfit happens to look a little different these days, with midi length versions being introduced in electrifying shades, and ladies on the street coming up with impeccable style rules - i.e. "must layer with shirting underneath." The sweater dress is being reintroduced into our wardrobes as a trend this season, which means there are cozy, oversize silhouettes abound for you to shop. That is, right after you take our advice for how to wear them.

It comes with little to no surprise that Dua Lipa isn't afraid to slip into a bikini, especially given her abs of steel. These Pizza Socks Actually Smell Like Pizza, and I Am Unwell
We love delicious pizza, and we love cozy, comfortable socks. So marrying the two together seems like a no-brainer, right? Well, we found a pair of pizza socks on Amazon that may have taken the obsession too far - even for Joey Tribbiani. The Smelly Pizza Sock Gift Set ($17) contains six pairs of pizza-themed socks, but here's the twist: All of these socks actually smell like pizza.
We have mixed feelings about these socks. On the one hand, who doesn't like the smell of pizza? Honestly, half the fun of eating pizza is that fresh-out-of-the-oven smell. But, on the other hand, who likes the smell of dirty socks? And when mixed with pizza, well, we're not too sure. The socks are one size fits most, and the smell is meant to last for up to 10 washes. Entirely your call if that's a pro or con.

Disney World Is Infinitely Better Than Disneyland, and Here's Why
When it comes to Disney Parks and Resorts, Walt Disney World has the upper hand over Disneyland. While I might be a little biased, as Walt Disney World is my home park and I've been an annual pass holder for more than 20 years, there really is something special about seeing Walt's vision come to life all over Orlando, Florida. Yes, Disneyland is the original and has a ton of nostalgia, and they even have better churro options, but there's just something special about Walt Disney World and seeing Walt's vision carried out in such an immersive way.
So, do you want to know why Walt Disney World is better than Disneyland? Read through to see.

Dressed as characters from Alice in Wonderland the Harris family - Jillian, Justin, 2-year-old Leo, and 1-month-old Annie - has successfully made it so that I'd like to be adopted into their adorable brood. Even the family dog, Nacho Cilantro, got dressed up, and if I'm honest, he's the best damn one.

13 Stores That Will Welcome Your Dog With Open Arms
When Reddit user terriblesubreddit shared a picture of their adorable puppy in a Home Depot cart with the message that the store is totally pet friendly, we got to wondering about what other major retailers are also pet friendly. There are the obvious answers - Petco and PetSmart - but surprisingly, there are several other stores that welcome your pets along with you, provided they are always under your control and as long as you clean up after them should they make any messes.
Here are a few of the retailers we found that allow dogs, but keep in mind it's always wise to call a store before you go to make sure it's OK. We have found that though some store policies allow dogs, specific store managers will not, and though some store policies prohibit dogs, certain store managers welcome them. Always good to err on the side of caution!
- Home Depot
- Lowe's
- Barnes & Noble
- Macy's
- Pottery Barn
- Bass Pro Shops
- Restoration Hardware
- Bloomingdale's
- Anthropologie
- Gap
- Nordstrom
- Lush Cosmetics
- Urban Outfitters
For the most part, these stores (among many smaller, local stores) are said to be dog friendly, but like we said before, we highly recommend calling each establishment first. Rules will also vary based on where you live and how your local culture is. When I lived in a small suburb of San Francisco, everyone took their dogs everywhere - including the grocery store - and it was never an issue. So make some calls, check out some stores, and let us know if there are any major stores we missed!
Normani's Nostalgic Shoot Totally Would Have Been Plastered on Our Walls in the '00s
If you haven't already heard her collaboration with Khalid, or any of her massively successful songs with Fifth Harmony, you'll soon know Normani. Following the dissembling of the girl group earlier this year, the 22-year-old singer - full name Normani Kordei Hamilton - has been pursuing a solo career. Now, she's on the digital cover of Paper as part of the magazine's ongoing Takeover series, which will spotlight five women in the music industry.
The glamorous editorial sees Normani in looks reminiscent of 2000s pop stars, like Mariah Carey and Destiny's Child, with high ponytails, vibrant eye shadow, and a lot of lip gloss. Our favorite makeup look, however, might be Normani's neon green eyeliner, which stands out as a modern trend in the otherwise nostalgic editorial.
Normani also opened up to the magazine about how she developed her self-confidence at a young age, as reportedly one of the three black students in her school. "When I went home [after school], my parents always made sure that they told me I was no different, and they told me I was just as powerful and just as beautiful," she said. "I would ask questions like, 'Why isn't my hair this texture? I want my hair straight.' But they always instilled in me to love myself for all that I am."
Now, she hopes to help others build confidence through representation. "I posted this one photo with my Afro, with my natural hair, and so many girls were like, 'Oh my God, I never liked my curls, but you make me build up the confidence to build a selfie.' All because of one post," Normani said. "Simple things like that go such a long way and make such an impact in how people perceive and see themselves."
Alice + Olivia Is Here to Make Easy Press-On Nails Fashun
Earlier this year, Alice + Olivia unveiled its Passport to Wonderland line - one that founder Stacey Bendet has described as being inspired by "women from different cities and cultures." Now, Bendet has woven that concept into six designs for Kiss Nails that will be a part of the brand's ImPRESS Press-On Manicure collection.
You'll find glitters, stripes, and more. "We created nail designs to go back to some of the neon colors and fun prints present in our clothing and accessories," Bendet said. She went on to say that she views fashion as a form of personal expression: "It's a woman's art, and I wanted the nail designs to allow a woman to express herself in the same way."
The designs will be available starting Nov. 1, and you can see them in full ahead, along with inspiration on how to style the fashion-forward nails.
