The Haim Sisters Dressed as the Sanderson Sisters Will Put a Spell on You
Haim is getting into the Halloween spirit this year with a little help from three other famous sisters. The music-making trio - made up of Alana, Danielle, and Este Haim - dressed up as the Sanderson sisters for the spooky holiday, and their costumes are nothing short of perfect. The trio shared their witchy transformation via Instagram with the caption, "Did we succeed?" In the short clip, the women are seen dancing around to "I Put a Spell on You," with Alana dressed as Kathy Najimy's Mary Sanderson, Danielle sporting a blonde wig as Sarah Jessica Parker's character of the same first name, and Este taking on Bette Midler's Winifred.
As well-done as their group costume came out, it looks like it was a last-minute decision. Earlier this week, the group asked their fans whether they should dress up as cowboys or the Sanderson sisters this year. Not surprisingly, the latter option appears to have won the vote by a landslide - and judging by the outcome, we can't say we're disappointed.
1 Man Made a Real-Life Diagon Alley For His Wife Battling Breast Cancer, and Holy Sh*t, It's So Good
If there's one thing everyone can agree on, it's that Harry Potter fans have a crazily obsessed pretty devoted base. Although I've seen my fair share of cute Harry Potter clothes, costumes, and home decor, nothing prepared me for this walkable replica created by Joel Pace and some of his neighbors in Austin, TX. They started the project when his wife, Amanda, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017.
"She had several surgeries and complications," Joel told POPSUGAR. "When Halloween approached, she mentioned that we probably wouldn't be decorating. That's when I built the blue flying car . . . and then just kept building and experimenting (mostly with cardboard). It rained on Halloween last year and destroyed pretty much everything. We still had a great time, and it was very healing for all of us."
"It rained on Halloween last year and destroyed pretty much everything. We still had a great time, and it was very healing for all of us."
Rather than abandon the project as a one-time thing, Joel and Amanda took it up a notch for the 2018 Halloween season. But this time, they opted for foam instead of cardboard. And yes, it took a long f*cking time to make it.
"I mainly built the train and structures on weekends," Joel said. "The train took the longest - about six weeks - because it's large. And, surprisingly, there are no plans for how to build it. I'm glad I started early!'
As for the rest of the fictional town? It boiled down to a lot of drawing and even more trips to The Home Depot. "I would sit down and sketch out a plan for the building on paper or using my iPad and a drawing app," Joel said. "I'd look at the pictures of Universal or from the London stage and try to make a small interpretation of the building. Then I'd go to Home Depot and literally walk around looking for things I could use to fit the parts I needed."
Believe it or not, as the project grew larger, creating each building got easier. But the hardest part for Joel to figure out? The windows!
"With each structure I completed, it got progressively easier as I got more comfortable building with the foam. So, by the end, I could slap a building together in about six hours, not including paint."
All we can say is wow. Scroll through to get a look at this superimpressive Diagon Alley, and try not to buy a plane ticket to Austin in the process.

1 Little Girl Dressed Up as Michelle Obama For Halloween, and Can We Get Her in the White House?
After a photo of Parker Curry gazing up at a portrait of Michelle Obama went viral in March, the 3-year-old knew there was only one option when it came to Halloween costumes: a real-life version of Michelle Obama's portrait. Jessica Curry, Parker's mom, was immediately on board after her daughter got the chance to dance with the former first lady on The Ellen DeGeneres Show eight months ago.
"To be honest, I'm not sure why she specifically chose to be Michelle Obama for Halloween, but she knew from the moment we asked her that Michelle is who she wanted to be," Jessica told POPSUGAR. "Who doesn't want to be the Queen? She never wavered and made it very clear that she would be Michelle Obama for Halloween."
While Jessica was fully supportive of Parker's outfit choice, putting it together was going to be tough. With less than two weeks till Halloween. Jessica asked Alisha Welsh, a woman who runs Magnolia Lake Clothing, to make Parker a replica of the gown.
"I anticipate extreme excitement when Parker learns that the former first lady was pleased with the costume."
Naturally, Jessica shared several photos of Parker on social media. Before she knew it, Michelle had tweeted out a photo of her fan with the caption: "You nailed the look, Parker! I love it!!!!"
Unfortunately, Parker won't get the news about her idol until after school.
"Parker is at school today so she won't know that Michelle Obama loved her costume until she gets home," said Jessica. "I anticipate extreme excitement when Parker learns that the former first lady was pleased with the costume. Much like the first time Parker went viral, she's super unbothered by all the attention. She's unfazed but smiled happily when I told her that people in the world were loving the picture of her in costume."
Scroll through to get a look at her incredible gown. The resemblance seems pretty uncanny to us!

8 Rules I Always Give My Kids During the Holiday Season
Christmas is hands down my favorite holiday. The season is filled with so much joy, everyone is in a good mood, and there are usually an abundance of cookies and treats wherever you turn. Children, especially, are in a permanent state of excitement, because they know that Santa Claus will be making a stop at their house soon to bring them wonderful presents.
While it's easy for kids to get totally wrapped up (pun intended) in the gift aspect of the holiday, I try my best to remind them that the holiday season is about so much more than getting their favorite toys. To do this, I give them a set of rules to follow every year so they don't lose sight of what Christmas is all about. Keep reading to see them all now.
21 Moms Opening Up About Their Hardest Stages of Parenting Will Break Your Heart
Parenting is full of twists and turns at every stage. Just when you think you've got things down, you're thrown a new curve ball that you either never saw coming or knew was coming, but still have no idea how to handle. When I had my first child, I couldn't imagine anything being harder than the newborn stage. Boy, was I wrong. The toddler years nearly did me in! And now that I'm parenting a tween, I'm not sure I'll survive these years either. But, as parents, we figure it out and persist, because what else would we do? I asked my friends to dish on what the hardest part of parenting has been for them so far just to make sure I wasn't alone. So if you need some validation that you aren't totally screwing things up (you're not, I promise), keep reading.
13 Ways the Holidays Were Totally Different Back in the '90s
No other time of the year inspires nostalgia quite like the holiday season. You go home to your parents' house, sleep in your old bedroom, and forget about real-life responsibilities for a while. And as a child of the '90s - which is, in my opinion, the best decade (sorry, '80s babies) - I can safely say that this time was like no other for the holidays. The last decade before technology really exploded was epic in every way. Not only did it produce some of the most iconic Christmas songs and movies (Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You," anyone?), but ugly holiday sweaters were actually stylish and you had no choice but to do all your shopping at the mall. To see how else the holidays are drastically different today than they were in the '90s, keep reading.
Forget the Resort! Families Going to Disney World Should Rent 1 of These Magical Homes Instead
If you're trying to plan a trip to Disney World on a budget, there's a new way to save big on accommodations without sacrificing even one minute's worth of magic. Now, families opting out of expensive in-park resorts and hotels can connect with the many savvy homeowners in central Florida who have renovated their residences to attract those wanting that full experience.
They've decked out their vacation rentals to feel 100-percent Disney - whether your kids are looking to blast off with Buzz Lightyear during playtime, nap in a Cinderella-Inspired carriage bed or take a predinner dip in a pool fit for Dory and Nemo.
Popular property rental site HomeAway has shared with POPSUGAR just a handful of the rentals available now, and by the looks of them, you will have a hard time deciding which home - some of which are priced for as little as $15 per person per day - to choose. In fact, they're so authentic, you might have an even harder time leaving them every day to head to the parks!
The 1 Thing My Kids Do Every Year That Makes Them Forget All About Their Christmas Lists
My children are very lucky. They always know where their next meal is coming from, they've gotten gifts every Christmas, and they've always had clean clothes and a warm bed. While my husband and I work hard to be able to give them a comfortable life, we also want them to know that not everyone is as fortunate, and it's so important to give back to those who have less than they do. Around Christmastime, it's so easy for my kids to be spoiled with gifts from grandparents, godparents, and aunts and uncles. It's a lot, and most of it is unnecessary. So, to try to teach my kids about the spirit of giving back and not focusing on silly material things, our family "adopts" another family every holiday season.
It's been a tradition in our family ever since my children were babies. Every year, we get a list of families in our area that are in need, and my children help choose one we can help. There are usually three or four children in the family we shop for, and we get things the children need, along with a few special requests, too. My husband and I make sure our kids get to help pick out what we get them, but also explain to them why the family needs each item and how special things like a new pair of socks or a backpack are. And once my kids get in the store, it's hard for them to stop grabbing things for our adopted family. They always want to spoil the kids and especially love choosing books and things they love for them to experience.
Once we get home, we all wrap the gifts together. My kids put so much effort into picking the right wrapping paper and making the gifts look as pretty and perfect as possible (they check the list to see the kids' favorite colors and always make sure to incorporate that somehow). They talk about the family they've never met, and how they hope they love their gifts and have a great Christmas. And now that my kids are a little older, I know they're starting to really grasp how special it is to give back in this way. My son is almost 7, and he's starting to see this as more than just a fun activity he gets to do. He's beginning to realize how lucky he is, and when it comes to others who sometimes aren't as fortunate, he can actively do something to change that.
I'll always be grateful for the fact that I can give my kids what they need, and I love that the other adults in their lives who love them want to make them happy with toys and clothes. But I also want them to know how to be generous and think of others. Not all children are dealt the same cards - cards they don't ask for but are dealt anyway - and I believe it's vital that my kids not only understand this but understand that they can help do something about it, too. For now, that means adopting a family over the holidays, but hopefully it will mean even more to them as they get older.
I'll Never Make My Family Pose For Holiday Portraits - Here's Why
I'm all for beloved holiday traditions, but one thing I've never been into? Holiday family portraits. While they've always been around, they seem to have gained even more popularity in recent years, especially with social media. Whenever I scroll through my Instagram or Facebook feeds once the weather gets cold, I begin to see the professional snapshots, one more elaborate than the last. Everyone is dressed alike (sometimes in matching pajamas), siblings wear ugly holiday sweaters, and every single person flashes a picturesque smile. If you're one of those moms who can rally the family to do this, I truly applaud you, but I can't and won't.
To me, staged and professional family photos - especially around the holidays - aren't very memorable. I prefer candid, messy, and even blurry photos from our time together during the festive months. In professional portraits, everyone looks their best, is perfectly posing against a nice backdrop, and is told to smile and say cheese. I know that if that was my family, I wouldn't stumble upon those a few years later and think, "That was such a magical day." But the few photos I manage to capture of my kids making snow angels before I almost drop my phone in the snow? I'll cherish those forever.
Snapping pictures throughout the holidays is an important pastime in my family. Not only can I look back at old ones from my own childhood, but I love creating new ones with my kids, too. Someone is always snapping away in our house, and after a hectic day of being with family, I love looking at all the captured memories. It's an amazing reminder that there are magical moments happening all around me, even if I can't see them at the time. It also reminds me what's really important: family and being together. All of the energy I put into planning, organizing, and hosting is so worth it, and these photographs are proof.
Not doing holiday family portraits also takes the pressure off me. It's one less thing I have to organize, and I don't have to worry about painting a perfect family image that isn't realistic. We're loud, disheveled, and it's extremely hard to get my kids to smile at the same time, but that's exactly how I like it. But if other families cherish the memories they make while taking family portraits, then that's exactly what they should do. There's no right holiday family traditions, and any photo is worth keeping in my opinion.
So, while I can appreciate the moms who take the time to match their families in those adorable holiday outfits, I'm definitely more of an outtakes kind of mom. I hope my children feel that way when they get older and dig out our holiday albums. I want them to flip through the photos and be instantly taken back to those feelings of home, family, and yes, burnt turkey.

Dear Candy Canes, as a Parent, I Seriously Hate You
Dear Candy Canes,
You know the famous tale about how the Grinch stole Christmas? Well, I think it was actually you. I mean, first of all, just look at you. You put on such a front. You're so nicely wrapped and packaged that no one would ever think you'd cause such misery. You hang so nicely from Christmas tree branches, over the tops of stockings, and are the perfect finishing touch to any holiday present. You smell good. You come in an assortment of colors - the traditional red and white peppermint is my personal favorite - and (mostly good) flavors. And you're, I'll admit, delicious. Yes, you are the quintessential holiday symbol and treat. But while you scream holiday cheer, you put parents everywhere into a state of madness. And I mean madness.
How many parents have found remnants of you in the most unusual spots in their homes? After a seemingly innocent trip to the mall to meet Santa Claus or a family gathering with generous aunts and uncles, your sweet treats get sucked on for a few minutes before they're dropped or forgotten. I can't tell you how many old, nasty pieces of you I've found in the back of our car during the holiday season (and in the months after). I basically have to pry you off my kids' car seats with pliers for crying out loud! I've found you in their beds (sneaky little stinkers) and the worst place of all, the dryer. Yes, somehow the remnants of you made it through the wash cycle and into the dryer, only to be smudged all over my son's jeans, ruining the rest of that load of laundry.
Thanks a lot.
Did I mention the stickiness? DID I?! Parents of toddlers everywhere loathe the site of you, you red-and-white-striped holiday cheer stealer. Instead of our sweet children calmly enjoying you as a treat, we're left chasing them around and wiping their fingers and mouths at all times making sure they don't touch Aunt Suzy's new white couch. And parents all know that having a daughter takes things to a whole different level. My daughter has gotten many of you caught in her hair. It takes forever to get you out without cutting her beautiful locks! So. Much. Screaming.
So, candy canes, while you may look nice, you definitely belong on the naughty list. You're a hindrance to our holiday cheer. No, you're a holiday cheer bandit. If you can somehow get a hold of all of your sticky behavior, maybe, just maybe, I'll let you enter my home again. But until then, you're staying the hell out of my kids' stockings, our Christmas tree, and my daughter's hair.
From,

Parents, Please Don't Give Your Kids a Puppy on Christmas Morning
Nothing compares to watching the excitement on your kids' faces when they open their gifts on Christmas morning. They eagerly rip open the boxes and their eyes instantly light up when they see that Santa has brought them the thing they've wanted more than anything. And for some on Christmas morning, that means a puppy. Those lovable creatures, with their floppy ears and giant feet, are a guaranteed hit. I mean, who wouldn't want a puppy? They're a great addition to any family. But just because everyone loves them doesn't mean they should be given as gifts. Keep reading for why you shouldn't give a puppy as a gift on Christmas morning, and how to safely bring one home if you do get one during the holiday season.
1. Christmas Is Too Overwhelming
Christmas is a notoriously hectic day. From opening gifts to cooking to having family over or going to someone else's house, Christmas just isn't the time to introduce a tiny puppy into your home and family. Kids, especially little kids, can also get emotional, scream, or grab at the puppy, which could scare them. This is especially true if your new pet isn't house trained yet. Getting a new animal on Christmas will add a whole new level of stress for you and for the puppy.
Dog expert Cesar Millan points out: "You've just thrown [them] into a completely alien environment with no direction, and these early associations are going to stick. The place is unfamiliar, it smells different, and there doesn't seem to be any way out." Unless you're going to stop the whole Christmas gift-giving process and devote your whole day to the dog, chances are you're going to really stress out your new pup.
2. Pets Are Family Members
Living, breathing creatures like puppies and kittens aren't toys - they're new members of the family that will require love and attention for the next 9 to 15 years. Puppies should require a great amount of thought and preparation. They need a fleet of supplies, from crates and beds to food and toys, and they need the time and space to acclimate to their new things and home.
3. Children Might Want to Have a Say
When I've adopted animals in the past, the shelter workers always ask if every member of the family is present and OK with the adoption of a pet. One shelter wouldn't even let me adopt my pup until I brought my roommate in to confirm that she was on board. Largely, this process should hold true for kids. If you're expecting children to love and take care of a puppy for the next decade at least, they should have some say in which puppy they get, otherwise this is just a gift for you, and that's not the way gifts work.
4. Instead, Plan a Family Trip
That being said, you can still "give a puppy" for Christmas. Instead of putting a puppy in a box or stocking, give your kid the puppy toys, the crate, or a leash. Explain to them what this gift means, and that they'll be able to help pick out and rescue their new pet. They'll feel more invested in the process because they get to help. As part of your gift, pick a day as a family to go look at puppies, and after Christmas has died down, come up with a plan. This way, your family is happy and prepared, and a puppy has the best shot at adjusting to their new home and family with ease.

My Mom Took Over My Dating Life - Here's What Happened
This story is about Summer, my sweet, heartwarming, love-loving mother. At 5'6" and [AGE REDACTED], she's still a natural blonde who believes in regular exercise, plant-based diets, and daily meditation. We're alike in our effervescent joy and propensity for fun. I get my optimistic glee from my mom and my fear of not doing my homework from my dad. We differ in that I grew up to live in a big city, work in a tall building, and pay big money for small closet space. She grew up to raise animals, teach Sunday school, and take great pleasure in spending time in nature. Summer is a kinder, more vulnerable, and more honest version of me, without such a harsh adult exoskeleton.
As many moms would be, she was thrilled at the notion of this takeover. You could practically hear her cracking her knuckles all the way in San Diego while she set up camp at the computer. Using her preferred dating platform, Match.com, she set about setting me up.
Dating App Profile
Here's how I describe myself on dating apps: "Equal parts Reese Witherspoon and Amy Schumer. 5'4"." That's it. A dear friend blessed me with this flattering description, and my circle of cohorts wholeheartedly agree on its accuracy. It's got plenty of context and applies to both looks and personality. Summer didn't hate it, but she wanted more, so here's what she added:
"My friends describe me as equal parts Reese Witherspoon and Amy Schumer. I'm living my dream life here in San Francisco. My work as a senior director in communications and public relations is thrilling and challenging and I love it. I enjoy people and so many of the activities going on here in the city. If you are outgoing, have a strong leadership personality, and know how to enjoy life, you just may be my prince charming."
Aside from the two promotions she handed me and the line about prince charming, it wasn't bad, but it was far more emphatic and revealing than I'd venture to be if this were all up to me. It wasn't, so I let Summer introduce me to a few folks.
My Mom's Openers
We agreed that she was in charge of selecting the guys and sending them an initial opener. If they responded, I'd take over the conversation and aim to set up a date. Overall, her introductions were really something. Here are a handful of my favorites:
- "I love your name and the meaning of it. It feels like it fits you, do you love it?" (I took the liberty of googling his name, and it turns out there are two meanings. Depending on who you ask, it either means "powerful" or "blackness and sorrow." Luckily, his name was the first.)
- "I like your profile. How did you ever get to hold a koala bear?" (This pick wasn't bad, and I'd actually already gone on a date with this guy about 18 months ago and ghosted him because he was too into sports. If you're reading this, koala guy, I'm very sorry for the confusion.)
- "I do yoga both at home and at classes. Which do you prefer? Joy in this moment and always." (Literally, what? At first I was frustrated by this, but it's so her that I couldn't help but smile at it.)
She also had a couple renditions of profile flattery. Her strategy was to tell them she liked them without asking a question that might make them feel forced to engage. Instead, she left the ball in their court with statements like these:
- "Enjoyed your profile. Check out mine, and if you feel a connection, I'd love to hear from you."
- "I am enjoying my present moment reading your profile, very nice!"
After a while I asked her to cool it a little, and we settled on aiming for two-word openers like "Hey there" or "Happy Friday!" She wasn't keen on my ideas, but she stuck to shorter opening lines including:
- "I like your sense of humor."
- "You sound fun."
- And my personal favorite, "I'm game."

My mom likes to joke that if you're going to marry for the wrong reasons, marry for money because looks fade. So perhaps it's no surprise that she deprioritized aesthetics in favor of more lasting qualities, like professionalism and spiritual values.
The mother of an agnostic, gin-loving Netflix-watcher wanted her daughter to date Buddha.
This led to several conversations about dealbreakers, including the fact that just because she wants me to have a spiritual practice does not mean I should be dating someone with one. That was also true of other attributes, including vegetarianism, guys who don't drink, and even those who don't like TV.
That's right, the mother of an agnostic, gin-loving Netflix-watcher wanted her daughter to date Buddha. Things were not looking promising.
The Date My Mom Helped Set Up
During the course of this experiment, my mom picked out a handful of eligible suitors, all of whom were meditators with advanced degrees and professional jobs. A few of them were reasonably pleasant, and finally, after what I thought was way too much back and forth, one of them invited me to have . . . a phone call.
These men weren't my typical tech bros who'd invite me for a drink after four to six messages, engage in two to five dates, then we'd mutually ghost. But we're breaking molds here, so I agreed to this date via teleconference. Here's how that went down. The quotes are the words I said out loud, the parentheses are my thoughts along the way.
*Ring Ring*
Me: "Lisa Holden speaking!" (I'm a millennial, so I only use this feature of my phone for work purposes. I literally do not know how to answer a phone casually.)
Him: "Hey Lisa, it's GuyYourMomWantsYouToMarry, is now still a good time to chat?" (OK great, you're strangely formal on the phone, too.)
Me: "Yep! Great time to chat, I'm all yours!" (Honestly, I would never talk like this in person, why did I just invite this guy to . . . what? Have me? This is how you get taken.)
Him: "Cool, so, I guess the first thing I want to know is how you feel about dating? Are you dating lots of people or just one at a time? I ask because I want to find something real, and I think that's easier to do when you commit as soon as possible." (Sorry, did you just ask me to be exclusive ONE minute into this conference call? If so, I'm flattered, though I will definitely end up declining. But first, the people-pleaser in me will vaguely pretend I'm open to this for a while.)
And off we went, me chatting away about my theories on dating, how people have too many options out there to commit, and how someone who knows what they want is what I'm looking for, but too afraid to actually go for. He talked about what he likes to do and what lights him up, none of which overlapped with my interests. We ended the call after about 30 minutes and agreed to talk again soon. I was mortified I'd been so honest, so when he texted me asking about my passions, I sent him a link to my work right here on POPSUGAR. I've found it's a surefire way to make sure a guy doesn't want to see me again because they fear they're going to get written about. Spoiler: few of them are interesting enough to write about.
Then, shockingly, he responded. He said he wanted to learn more and included the following quote from Rumi, "Set your life on fire and seek out those who fan the flames."
I'm not proud of this, but I ghosted him.
Do I want someone who supports my creative endeavors? Of course I do. Did I have an iota of chemistry with this guy? Sadly, no. But I learned something important during this experiment about openness and intimacy. I never share my writing with guys I date because I'm afraid of scaring them off. What I learned is that not everyone is fearful of a woman who writes about love, and there are men out there with whom I could conceivably be myself. I ended up texting the guy a week later thanking him for the conversation and awesome quote, but gently saying I didn't see us as a match.
Final Thoughts
When I told my mom about it, her response was, "If you don't like him, do you think he's too young for me?" So as it turns out, Summer didn't find my soulmate, but maybe she wasn't really looking for me to begin with.
But as moms do, she taught me an important lesson. Hiding who you really are might feel safer in the dating world, but in the end, showcasing the truest parts of yourself on dates is a better way to go. Moving forward, I'll attempt to bring forth that honest, vulnerable side of myself that I get from Summer in the first place, and who knows, maybe I'll find someone who can deal with (or maybe even celebrates) dating a writer.
If Oprah Knocks on Your Door, Don't Freak Out - She Just Wants You to Vote
When Oprah Winfrey tells you to vote, you vote! The former talk show host went door-to-door in Georgia on Thursday to encourage people to vote for the state's Democratic candidate for governor, Stacey Abrams. In a video posted to her Instagram page, Winfrey is seen knocking on the front door of an unsuspecting fan named Denise who nearly (and very understandably) jumps out of her skin at the sight of the media mogul. Since she's clearly on a mission here, Winfrey gets right to it and asks Denise whether she'll cast a ballot for Abrams in the upcoming election on Nov. 6, to which Denise replies, "I absolutely am," before the video cuts short. In another short clip, Winfrey passes by a woman holding up a sign promoting love and kindness while passing through a neighborhood.
Stacey Abrams is in a tight race against Republican candidate and Georgia's current Secretary of State, Brian Kemp. If Abrams wins the election, she will become the nation's first black female governor. With that information in mind - along with the fact that this gubernatorial race has drawn national attention due to allegations of voter suppression tactics - it's not a shock that Winfrey has spent the better part of this week showing her support for Abrams. So far, she's canvassed neighborhoods, spoken at a rally, and later has plans to attend a town hall. Abrams has also earned the support of former President Barack Obama, former Vice President Joe Biden, and Senator Kamala Harris.

Black Women Are Ready to Be the Face of the Democratic Party - They're Already Its Leaders
Black women have long been the heart and soul of the Democratic Party, but never the face. We've been supporting Democratic policies and candidates for years, but still lack anything close to meaningful representation inside the party and in our elected institutions. But this year's midterm elections have the potential to dramatically launch the party into the future.
We know empowering black women voters and candidates isn't just the right thing to do. It's also the smart thing to do.
Nov. 6, 2018, marks the most important midterm election in decades - maybe even centuries - because our country is at a crucial turning point. Next week, our nation will decide: will we recognize the backslide on civil and human rights and catch ourselves before it's too late, or will we fall deeper into a racist, bigoted autocracy?
The stakes couldn't be higher. That's why the Democratic Party must get this right by ensuring that black women are the leaders of our movement.
This is what we believe at MoveOn, because we know empowering black women voters and candidates isn't just the right thing to do. It's also the smart thing to do.
So far, MoveOn members have directly contributed more than $1 million to black women candidates in small-dollar contributions, showing that voters will support and put their dollars behind these candidates. And in races across the country, whether local or national, rural or urban, North or South, black women aren't just running, they're winning.
Take Stacey Abrams (pictured above) in Georgia. She's a MoveOn-endorsed Democratic candidate who could soon become the first black woman elected governor. Not just in Georgia or in the South, but ever, in any state. Right now, she's neck and neck with her Republican opponent Brian Kemp (who's also overseeing the election as Georgia's secretary of state and is behind the state's recent efforts to purge people - largely black folks - from voter rolls, denying them the right to vote in the 2018 elections).
In Georgia, a Democrat locked in statistical dead heat with a Republican candidate for governor is itself a remarkable feat. In 2016, Georgia voted for Donald Trump by a solid five-point margin. In the 2014 gubernatorial election, Republican Nathan Deal beat Democrat Jason Carter by eight points. Georgia hasn't had a Democratic governor in 15 years. And yet, despite this history, Abrams is slightly ahead of her opponent in recent polling.
As one of the most targeted, underserved, and underrepresented communities in America, black women are well-prepared to tip the scales of injustice back in the favor of all of us.
Abrams is not the only candidate proving that black women are the future of the Democratic Party. Jahana Hayes, 2016 National Teacher of the Year, has a chance to become the state's first-ever black woman to represent Connecticut's 5th Congressional District, where she's already overcome significant obstacles. In her primary, her opponent was backed not only by the state's Democratic Party but also by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Despite the odds stacked against her, she won a clear victory, with 100 of her former students helping staff her campaign. By some measures, she's already won. And now, the only obstacle left between Hayes and Congress is her Republican opponent.
In Boston, there's another black woman running for office and making history. In the primary for Massachusetts's 7th Congressional District, the only minority-majority district in the state, Ayanna Pressley won a race against a 10-term incumbent, upending what many thought was going to be an easy reelection for Mike Capuano. Now, running unopposed in the general election, Pressley is poised to become the first black woman to represent Massachusetts in Congress.
In federal, state, and local elections across the country, black women are running for office - and running to the polls. Black women have been at the forefront of liberation movements, from the Civil Rights Era to reproductive justice to LGBTQ+ rights and the modern Black Lives Matter movement. As one of the most targeted, underserved, and underrepresented communities in America, black women are well-prepared to tip the scales of injustice back in the favor of all of us.
When black women run for office and win, we all win.
If Democrats want to remain a viable option in elections to come, it's time to stop relying on black women to vote to save the Democratic Party - it's well past time for us to lead it.
