Amazon Made a Bunch of People Watching THAT Gross Suspiria Scene, and It's . . . a Lot
If you've already seen Luca Guadagnino's sultry reimagining of Suspiria, chances are that one scene sticks out as grisly, grotesque, violent, and almost unwatchable. If you haven't seen it yet, consider this a primer of the horrors that await. Just in time for Halloween, Amazon has released a new clip of people watching THAT exact scene. No, we're not talking about that chilling final sequence, but rather a scene early on, in which Susie (Dakota Johnson) performs bewitching choreography that twists another one of the school's dancers into a horrible human pretzel. Even the sound effects alone are more than enough to make you lose your appetite. Watch at your own risk.
How Boy Erased Outsold Expectations and Became a Powerful Film, Against All Odds
Boy Erased could not be coming at a better time. We're on the precipice of the midterm elections. LGBTQ+ rights are under attack by an administration that wants to erase transgender people from existence and dismantle protections meant to help the community as a whole. Mike Pence has a documented history with gay conversion therapy. Though the true story of a young gay man who survived a gay conversion camp dates back to 2003, each aspect of his experience is tragically relevant in 2018, perhaps moreso.
Just ahead of the film's release, I sat down with the man behind the memoir that inspired the film. Garrard Conley has been writing about shame and the dangers of conversion therapy for some time now, but Boy Erased didn't hit bookstores until 2016. During our chat, we talk about this long journey to publication, the strange path to the big screen with friend and ally Joel Edgerton, and whether or not he's heard from any of the others at Love in Action since this whirlwind began. Don't forget to see Boy Erased, too - it's arguably one of the most important films to be released in 2018.
POPSUGAR: What has this whole thing been like? Has it been just super surreal for you?
Garrard Conley: Yeah. I mean . . . it's unusual to have your life story thrust out into the public this way.
PS: I bet you couldn't have even imagined it when you wrote it.
GC: No. Publishers at the time were like, "Oh, it's not going to sell, because it's a gay book." They still say that.
PS: Do they really?!
GC: Yeah. I mean, not about my book, but it's a thing that you hear all the time, and it's really annoying. So there was no way I could predict this.
PS: Yeah. Can you take me back to the moment when you decided to write about this experience in the first place? You've written a lot about shame and trauma.
GC: Yeah. Thanks for reading up.
PS: Yeah, of course. You've said how gay men lock trauma away or share it in really private spaces. What was the moment you decided to bring it out of your own closet?
GC: I mean, first of all, I was trying to just write fiction for so long. And I had these four failed novels that are all kind of dystopian versions of Boy Erased. And after a while, I was like, "Actually, the truth is more dystopian than creating an alternate reality." I mean, if you look at the news right now, the administration trying to erase trans lives, that's like conversion therapy at large. We're already in that dystopia.
So it didn't make sense to write it as fiction anymore. But yeah, I don't think I was prepared. Actually, it's so funny. When I first started writing, I was like, "OK, I want this to be a good book that's respected and insiders know about it, but I don't want it to be a big thing." I was so nervous about what it would do to my family . . . but, at a certain point, you have to just go with it, I guess. I was not planning to be an advocate. I didn't want to be this voice necessarily because, in my own way, I wanted to be private. That's what you do when you're a writer. You're private. This has thrust me into this very unusual place.
I'm doing it now because it's almost like I can feel the finish line. And I'm like, "OK, I gotta keep doing this, because I want it to possibly be a mainstream topic that everyone's talking about." And I mean, it helps it's going to be on [The Ellen Show] today, and then again on Monday. That's cool. It's a cool moment. And I know that the version of me that was younger would have needed this, so that's why I'm doing it. But it's very unnatural for me.
PS: So you've just been kind of pushing through that terror from the start?
GC: I mean, I come off as someone who is a confident speaker whenever I'm in front of people, because I've just trained myself to do it. I was a teacher for a long time, and no audience is worse than teenage boys. They're the worst. They will rip you to shreds. So nothing is as bad as that. So I come off as confident, but I'm actually very much an introvert.
PS: In the end, did you have to have any sort of reckoning with yourself? Did you do any sort of personal healing before you really started figuring all this out?
GC: Yeah. I'd like to say that I did . . . I mean, I think my struggle is very much just alive in my interviews and when I talk to people. Actually, until recently, I haven't really had health insurance or money for a real therapist. Not a conversion therapist, but the real kind. So it's been like I'm airing it out in public. It's kind of an interesting thing to do.
PS: Do you think there are some people who are just never going to change?
"People are living in shame and fear. That's tough. And they're being called "faggot." It's happening all the time."
GC: I think you ignore them after a while. This is where my stance is right now: I'll have a conversation with someone and say, "Here's why human rights are not up for debate. Here's why identity is not up for debate." And I'll explain that carefully. And if someone, after hearing that explanation, after having a conversation, continues to say, "Well, I still don't think that they should X," whatever, then it's time to let them go. I think because there's no basic human decency to even stand on with that person. And I think we have to, because there are people like Trump in the world, who may not be evil, but are totally insane. And I think Mike Pence is the closest we've seen to evil, actually.
PS: Yeah. Totally. So you said in something that you wrote, I don't remember where it was exactly, but about how being an LGBTQ person, you can have the best upbringing, you can have parents who don't traumatize you or friends who don't traumatize you but, really, society as a whole builds that shame into you. Do you see this always being a part of the LGBTQ+ journey? Is this just kind of our life's lot?
GC: I hope it's not. No. I don't think it's inherent to our identity. I think it's part of our history that needs to be recorded forever so it doesn't happen again. But I think right now, we just aren't in a place where shame can be a topic of discussion. I mean, just going back to Arkansas, every time I'm like, OK, this is what's actually happening on the ground. People are living in shame and fear. That's tough. And they're being called "faggot." It's happening all the time. I always hate to be the downer in the room.
PS: I know. Well, we're in a bubble sometimes, that's true.
GC: I know. I mean, I wish I could be like, "Let's make Call Me By Your Name 2. It'll be great." Instead, we just made this really incredibly sad story that triggers people. But it has to be done, I think. My sense on that is that we need an abundance of stories. And we need to stop pitting ourselves against each other. It's like, I get it. There are politics to every single thing that gets made.
Joel Edgerton was able to make this because he is a very powerful straight white man who has good friends who will get on a movie with him and make it mainstream. And we both knew that and we weren't cynical about it, but we were business-minded about it. Like, "I want this to be mainstream and let's hire as many LGBTQ people in it, both in front of the camera and behind the camera, but also, you're going to help me, as an ally, do this." And he did.
PS: It seems like he put a lot of care into it.
GC: He's a real ally. You don't meet that very often. You meet people who are doing it because they think it's going to be good for their career or, whatever, make them look good. But, in fact, Joel taking this on, it didn't, at first, make him look good. People were like, "Why is a straight man directing this? Why are we doing this?" I mean, of course, there will still be that murmuring going on - I think it's an important conversation to have - but we knew what we were doing with making something mainstream like that.
PS: Yeah. Totally.
GC: We want it to be a topic of conversation in every living room. And it's tough. I hope that we get to a point where we just have an insane amount of great LBGTQ films, or just eventually get to the point to where they're just films. And there are gay people in them sometimes.
PS: In the time since you've started writing articles about conversion therapy and shame, and then eventually writing your memoir, have you ever heard from any of your fellow conversion therapy buddies?
GC: I haven't. I've heard from a lot of survivors. But the smaller group that I was in, I haven't heard from anyone from that, which is so crazy.
PS: Have you ever looked into it or reached out?
GC: Yeah. I actually put out this Facebook ad that was targeted, and also, I joined a secret Facebook group for survivors of Love in Action.
PS: Oh, wow.
GC: And no one in there. It's weird. But yeah. Especially Jay, in the book, I wish I knew what he was doing now. He was a genius, so, it would be great to know.
PS: And then Victor, too. I mean, that little end tag in the movie that kind of gives an update on him was really interesting.
GC: Yeah. The real Victor Sykes, I got him to donate his materials to the Smithsonian by appealing to his ego. But, no. I mean, it's so messed up to say he's a wonderful person now, but he's become more of a human. He's married to a man, living in Paris, TX, making furniture. He participated in the podcast that we're doing called UnErased. And so, he's taking the right steps. He's apologizing to people. It's never going to be perfect. I think when you're responsible for so many people's deaths and you know that, you've got to be in a certain state of denial to even function.
PS: Yeah. I mean, I can't even imagine.
GC: So I wish him the best, but I also don't really want to hang out with him. Even though we're Facebook friends.
PS: Totally fair. Oh, are you?
GC: I defriended him one time and he sent me a message. And he was like, "Why did you defriend me?" I was like, "Oh, I guess it was a mistake." It was just too much trouble to deal with, and it's like, I'm never on Facebook anyway so let's just be friends.
Grey's Anatomy Brought Back a Ton of Dead Characters For an Emotional Montage
Shonda Rhimes might only regret killing one character over the course of Grey's Anatomy's 15 seasons, but on Thursday night, longtime fans of the ABC series got a chance to reflect on everyone else who tragically hasn't made it out of Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital alive.
As Meredith strolls through the hospital at the end of "Flowers Grow Out of My Grave," which aired on Nov. 1, or Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), loved ones she's lost over the years pop up throughout the halls. George, Derek, Mark, Lexi, her mother Ellis, and even her late dog, Doc, appear in sweet-but-sad cameos, staring at Mer while a Spanish-language cover of "Chasing Cars" plays in the background.
Naturally, the sudden reappearance of such beloved characters has Grey's Anatomy fans soaking in a puddle of their own tears. If you can take a break from your own heaving sobs, we highly recommend scrolling through fan reactions to the big moment ahead.
Rami Malek Wanted Bohemian Rhapsody to Focus More on Freddie Mercury's Sexuality
Make way for Bohemian Rhapsody, which is here to tell you the "real" story of Freddie Mercury and the other members of the iconic band known as Queen. Ahead of the film's release, it seems that the biggest complaint pertains to the creative license taken in telling the story. Sure, every Hollywood biopic has to tweak components here and there to package the story as a two-hour tell-all. And even though Rami Malek nails his performance as Mercury, it would seem that the singer has been slightly straight-washed, his sexuality and relationships minimized, and his fellow band members sanitized. And, well, the critics who are pointing out these flaws are not wrong.
Here's something that's interesting, though: it turns out Malek actually pushed to get more of Mercury's sexuality depicted in the film. After saying he "totally understands" the criticisms about the film's straight-washing, Malek insisted that he pushed to have one of Mercury's most important relationships featured more heavily. "He had a beautiful relationship with Jim Hutton, and we had a finite period in which we wanted to tell this story," Malek told USA Today. "Believe me: There were conversations left and right about how to incorporate more of that story into this film. It was something I pushed for, to be quite honest, as much as possible and repeatedly brought to the attention of producers and directors and everyone who would listen."
For the uninitiated, Mercury's relationship with Hutton was one of his most important. Hutton was with Mercury for over six years and was by his side when he died of AIDS. Clearly, he's a pretty important part of Mercury's life story and an important indicator marker for his sexuality. In the film, Hutton appears in just a couple of scenes.
"Freddie Mercury is a gay icon, and he's an icon for all of us," Malek continued. "I hope people do not feel that the film does a disservice to the community, and if it were me, I would've loved to have incorporated more." Interesting. I guess it's nice that Malek was advocating for a more fleshed-out portrait of Mercury. But at the end of the day, if it didn't change the final product, I can't help but question whether that really matters.
Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba Got Bored During a Night Shoot and Made Their Own Music Video
Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba are currently filming LA's Finest, the Bad Boys spinoff series, and they're making the most of every moment on set. During downtime in the middle of a night shoot, they decided to entertain themselves by making their very own spinoff, a makeshift music video to DaniLeigh's "Lil Bebe (Remix)". They roped in makeup artist Tym Buacharern as choreographer, with Gabrielle explaining, "[when] your makeup artist happens to be a 2x Emmy winner that also danced for Janet Jackson... choreography and magic happen."
She and Jessica are no strangers to choreography either: Jessica danced her way to the top in Honey, while Gabrielle wiped the floor with the Rancho Carne Toros as Isis in Bring it On. This new project might not be as polished as their performances back then, but it's definitely just as entertaining. Look out for the cameo from a mariachi band!
Eventually, This Will Be Princess Charlotte's Royal Job Description
There's no question about it: Princess Charlotte is the official royal scene-stealer. Whether waving to her adoring fans or pulling the best faces, we're positive that the princess is going to be grabbing the spotlight for many years to come. For now, her only concerns are spending time with family and going to nursery school, but it won't be long before she starts having royal duties of her own, like her parents and other senior royals. What duties can we expect from everyone's favorite princess?
A lot of it depends not just on her age, but on her proximity to the throne. Charlotte will always be one of the front-line royals, as the daughter of a future king. So far, the only duty Charlotte has been asked to do has been to be a bridesmaid twice: once for her now-aunt Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, and most recently for her father's cousin Princess Eugenie. In the future, however, her duties will likely increase, especially as her aging into them is likely to coincide with her grandfather Prince Charles's accession to the throne and the subsequent "bumping up" of the whole royal line, eventually making her the daughter of a king when Prince William succeeds (and the sister to one when Prince George does).
While the Palace hasn't confirmed anything about Charlotte's future duties, we can get a pretty good guess by looking at some of her predecessors. The royal ladies who would have had the most similar lives would have been Princess Margaret (younger daughter of George VI and sister to the Queen) and Princess Anne, the Queen's only daughter. Both of these women undertook a huge number of public engagements: Princess Anne has been one of the most active royals for most of her life.
For the most part, Charlotte's duties will probably include a lot of official engagements such as visits at home and abroad, public appearances, and Palace events. Like most royal women, it's likely that she will become the patron of some charities once she's an adult, depending on what her particular interests are. Because she's in the direct line rather than descended from a younger son, Charlotte probably won't be able to follow in the footsteps of Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, or of Zara Tindall, who forged non-royal full-time careers; she will be a full-time royal all her life.
One more fun fact about Princess Charlotte's future: she is the next person eligible to be given the title "Princess Royal." Currently held by Princess Anne, the title is traditionally given to the eldest daughter of a monarch, but can only be held by one living person at a time (so, for instance, if Charles had had a daughter, she probably wouldn't have been given the title even once Charles was king because Anne would still be alive, too). Only seven women in the history of England have held the title - it seems fitting that the special title could go to a princess who's already proving herself to be pretty special!

Ellen DeGeneres Gave Such a Heartwarming Gift to Fatima Ali, a Top Chef Alum With 1 Year to Live
Former Top Chef contestant Fatima Ali is going through an unimaginably tough time, and Ellen DeGeneres wanted to help a little bit. Chef Fatima, 29, was told she has one year left to live after her cancer came back, and all she wants to do is travel the world and eat the most delicious food. "I have so many restaurants I want to go to around Europe. You're obviously invited - so is Portia," Fatima told Ellen. Fatima's friends have started a GoFundMe page to help with the expenses, but Ellen sped things up with a generous donation of $50,000 courtesy of Shutterfly. Watch the emotional video above, and then read a beautiful essay by Fatima entitled, "I'm a Chef With Terminal Cancer. This Is What I'm Doing With the Time I Have Left."
Tired of the Droughtlander? Dinna Fear, Here's When Outlander Returns
It's a yearly tradition that Outlander fans hate: the "Droughtlander," or the agonizing several months' wait between seasons of the smash hit Starz drama. The tidbits dropped by cast and crew and the clips in the trailers will only go so far. The good news: if you've been missing Jamie, Claire, Brianna, and the rest, you're certainly not alone. The even-better news is that we've got a confirmed return date for the new season, and it's almost here!
Circle the date on your calendar, Outlander fans: Sunday, Nov. 4. Like seasons past, the upcoming fourth season will air on Sunday evenings on Starz for American viewers. UK fans will be able to catch episodes the next day via streaming on Amazon Prime. Compared to weeknights, Sundays tend to be a quieter night for original programming on TV, with reality TV and football occupying a fair bit of the airwaves, so Outlander won't face a ton of competition - not that it would anyway, given how devoted its fans are!
The fourth season will see Jamie and Claire traveling to the New World. Along with Jamie's nephew Ian, they'll be meeting a slew of new characters and trying to find a place for themselves in the American colonies without revealing Claire's knowledge of the upcoming American Revolution. This season will cover most of Diana Gabaldon's novel Drums of Autumn, although, as usual, there will still be some surprises in store even for book readers - and we can't wait.
You’ll Have to Pry My Eyes Open With Toothpicks - Walmart Is Selling a Heated Blanket For My Car and I’m Already SO Snugly
After launching her EV1 Collection at Walmart earlier this year, Ellen DeGeneres returned to kick off the festive season by unveiling her 15 favorite items to shop. While the products range quite a bit, the one that caught our eye was this electrical flannel blanket that plugs into the cigarette lighter of your car.
Say goodbye to bitter mornings when you're forced to sit with the engine running waiting for your car to heat up. With the Stalwart Electric Heater Car Blanket ($18, originally $25) you can start warming up the second you plug it in.
All we have to say is, thank you for finding this, Ellen!

Attention Parents! Target’s Hosting an L.O.L. Surprise Event in November That You Can’t Miss
Hold onto your sanity, mamas - Target is hosting an epic L.O.L. Surprise! event for your blind bag-loving kiddos, and we imagine it's going to be some Black Friday level craziness. However, if your kid is obsessed with the mini L.O.L. Surprise pets, dolls, and other toys, you know that this event is going to be the place to be for little kids.
On Saturday, Nov. 10, at local participating stores (find out if your store will be hosting the event here), Target is hosting L.O.L. Surprise! Eye Spy Pets Scavenger Hunts from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. local time. Your kids can join in the L.O.L. fun by decoding clues to find the missing L.O.L. Surprise pet somewhere in the store. Once they find the pet, they'll have the chance to purchase an exclusive L.O.L. Surprise! Pet Ball for $10.
The event isn't limited to the scavenger hunt, however. There will also be selfie stations and giveaways every 30 minutes (while supplies last). Sounds like a grand old time to us (both literally and with a little apprehension). See you there?
This Company Will Put Your Face on Its Wrapping Paper, and Sorry, Family - Everyone's Getting My Selfie For Christmas
I'm a lousy gift-wrapper. Flip any present I've given you upside-down and you'll find the work of a madman. Scotch tape bits that obviously stuck to each other at some point prior to being unfurled into crinkly pieces, mismatched corner folds, and trapped air underneath the paper. I've even been known to use inside-out grocery bags in lieu of paper (and not in a rustic Etsy way). The only thing separating my gifts from landing top-of-the-fold in a roundup of bad wrapping jobs is the absence of duct tape - I draw the line at duct tape.
Which is why the moment I discovered Gift Wrap My Face ($17 for a roll), I knew this was just what I needed. The company emblazons your face - or any face, actually - smack dab right onto the wrapping paper. Christmas, Hannukah, even birthday-themed. It doesn't matter the holiday, family and friends can have your face repeated throughout their wrapping paper. I can't think of a better way to distract someone from my botched wrapping job than by giving them hilarious paper.
This is personalization at its peak.
This Year, I'm Saying No to Black Friday
This year, I'm saying no to Black Friday, and I encourage other parents who are tired of it to join me. Say no to rushing through your Thanksgiving meal and bolting from the dinner table, so you can rush to stores that are open crazy late or mind-numbingly early, all so you can save a few bucks on this year's hottest toys. Say no to long lines, rude shoppers, and sometimes-hostile store employees (but who could blame them?). Just say no.
I've never gotten why anyone would willingly (and even love to) participate. In years past, I've see friends posting on social media about braving bad weather and pushy parents at crowded malls, from the comfort of my sofa, wine in hand. While some later celebrate the awesome gifts they were able to snag for less (sometime around 3 a.m.), more often than not, tales of Black Fridays gone wrong inevitably emerge. This store didn't honor this deal, they ran out of Fortnite the Musical video games, or someone witnessed two parents fighting over the very last punch-me-in-the-face Mickey doll. While I'm a deal-lover too, I know I'm not cut out for that and would much rather dig for Cyber Monday deals online in exchange for my sanity.
The ridiculous competition for stuff can also literally take away from the parents who genuinely rely on Black Friday in order to give their kids a nice holiday. And when did the season, especially the time around Thanksgiving, become more focused on nabbing the biggest TV than being thankful for what you have and thinking of the needs of others?
All of this is why I'm abstaining from Black Friday again this year. If you need me, I'll be snuggled up with my kiddos in front of a movie, indulging in a little more pumpkin pie than usual, and charging my computer for Cyber Monday so that I can shop in my pajamas.

For those who've long felt pigeonholed by the idea that there are boy names strictly for boys and girl names exclusively for girls, a new baby-naming trend is the perfect gender-neutralizing antidote.
Many parents are opting to give their baby girls a traditional boy's name, and we're sure the amount of female Noahs, Flynns, and Garretts will only multiply now that Blake Lively, whose own moniker isn't classically "female," has named her newborn daughter James. In fact, it's a tactic that has long had a place in Hollywood. Drew Barrymore, Reese Witherspoon, Hayden Panettiere, Parker Posey, Taylor Swift, Cameron Diaz . . . they all borrowed from the boys.
Curious what other boy names are being recast for the opposite sex? Read on. You might even be surprised to see some names - like Kelly or Dana, for instance - that have so long been coopted by women, you forgot they were ever boys' names to begin with.

We Moved From LA to Kentucky to Raise Our Family, and I've Never Been Happier
After twenty years of living in Los Angeles, I was feeling stuck. Stuck in traffic, stuck in the heat, and stuck in line at In-N-Out Burger. Even though I'd met my husband and started a family in Southern California, it was feeling less and less like home. As much as LA had given me, it became clear that I wanted to give my 5-year-old son more: a life lived closer to family. The problem was that his grandparents lived a three-day drive away, and even for LA traffic, that's a long commute. How would my son and my husband feel about a cross-country move?
When my husband and I were first married, we talked a lot about the life we envisioned. We saw ourselves spending time in many different cities, but LA was never one of them. Cut to fifteen years after our wedding: we're in Los Angeles, I'm hugely pregnant, and we've decided to buy a new house. It was looking like I was about to become a permanent valley girl.

When I'd hear my mom and dad's voices on the phone, I'd burst into tears after hanging up. LA was losing its luster, and my heart was running on empty.
Prior to my baby bump, our biggest reason for leaving was not the road rage-inducing traffic, lack of water, or the life-threatening fires and earthquakes, but our desire to raise a baby closer to grandparents. With family nearby, I knew our child would be getting the added amounts of love, support, and extra sugar they would need to thrive. I loved the idea of having sleepovers and game nights in person instead of via FaceTime. Now, though, we'd invested half a lifetime here, and I understood that moving would be complicated, as our ties to our friends and surroundings were strong. We were staying in LA without a single grandparent in sight.
A dormant hormone (that must have come in with my breast milk) soon kicked in and awoke an uncontrollable desire to move home. Dreams of family, fireflies, tall bluegrass, tree-covered hills, and the two-lane highways of Louisville, Kentucky, interrupted my stolen moments of slumber. When I'd hear my mom and dad's voices on the phone, I'd burst into tears after hanging up. LA was losing its luster, and as much as I loved my car, I wanted to have a life outside of sitting in it. I wanted to go back to our original plan of leaving. My heart was running on empty.
"Honey, maybe now is the right time to move," I finally said. And that's when we truly began a dialogue about leaving. We had long discussions about what kind of life we wanted, and where we wanted to raise our family. We had a longtime connection to LA and we knew it would be tough to move away, but not a step was taken until everyone felt the same excitement at the possibility of a new life. So, five years after our baby was born, my husband, son, and I took that cross-country trip and planted some new roots closer to family.

It was a big decision to leave a lifetime of memories (and close proximity to Disneyland), but I'm confident we can make even more in our new hometown. We already are. We're four months in and my son has had such fun taking long walks in the rain, catching fireflies, having sleepovers with his grandparents, and, of course, eating all the extra sugar his stomach can stand. His main complaint is that Louisville needs a Disneyland, and on that point, I couldn't agree more. But family, nature, and down home hospitality can't be beat.
My heart is full, and I'm no longer feeling stuck. Well, there are some days I'm stuck at home, but this time it's not because I'm avoiding traffic or the heat. I'm stuck in the love my whole family gives in a hometown that I adore. Luckily, my husband and son love it, too. I've come home, and "my old Kentucky home" couldn't be more beautiful.

Mom Pens Touching Letter to the Compassionate Nurse Who Held Her Stillborn Baby
On Jan. 31, 2015, Jenny Albers went into labor at 20 weeks pregnant with a baby whose heartbeat she had heard just two days prior. Guided to a delivery room by a nurse, Jenny says she knew her baby wouldn't be going home with her. She delivered her baby with tears in her eyes, which were wiped by the nurse holding her hand, a person who would end up making the "darkest night of [her] life" shine with a bit of love and compassion.
"As I lay in that lonely hospital bed, my body hollowed out by death, your words of understanding spoke to my soul. For you too had experienced the loss of a baby," Jenny wrote on her Facebook page, A Beautifully Burdened Life. "You asked if I wanted to see my baby and I said 'yes,' while admitting that I was afraid because the doctor had discouraged me from doing so. You encouraged me and acknowledged my fear, while assuring me that there was nothing to be afraid of."
The nurse returned holding Jenny's baby, "unfazed by the appearance of a tiny being born 20 weeks too soon." She told Jenny that her baby was beautiful and stroked the little one tenderly before placing the baby in Jenny's arms. Jenny wrote:
You told me that my baby's early death did not take away from the importance of his life. Your words were authentic, but it was the look in your eyes that validated this important truth. You treated my baby like a human being and you treated me with compassion as I had unwillingly become a bereaved mother.
Your love and compassion shined brightly during the darkest night of my life. You acknowledged my pain along with the beauty of my baby's short life. My heart had broken the minute my baby's had stopped beating. And as you held my baby, you also held my heart.
And now, I hold you in my heart. For I will never forget how you handled the two of us with such care.
Although this night was nearly four years ago, Jenny continues to repost and share her letter to this wonderful nurse to say thank you and to create more awareness around infant loss. "I'm certain that I said 'Thank you' before I walked out of that hospital room," Jenny ended her post. "But I wanted to say it again. Thank you."

Parents, Please Don't Give Your Kids a Puppy on Christmas Morning
Nothing compares to watching the excitement on your kids' faces when they open their gifts on Christmas morning. They eagerly rip open the boxes and their eyes instantly light up when they see that Santa has brought them the thing they've wanted more than anything. And for some on Christmas morning, that means a puppy. Those lovable creatures, with their floppy ears and giant feet, are a guaranteed hit. I mean, who wouldn't want a puppy? They're a great addition to any family. But just because everyone loves them doesn't mean they should be given as gifts. Keep reading for why you shouldn't give a puppy as a gift on Christmas morning, and how to safely bring one home if you do get one during the holiday season.
1. Christmas Is Too Overwhelming
Christmas is a notoriously hectic day. From opening gifts to cooking to having family over or going to someone else's house, Christmas just isn't the time to introduce a tiny puppy into your home and family. Kids, especially little kids, can also get emotional, scream, or grab at the puppy, which could scare them. This is especially true if your new pet isn't house trained yet. Getting a new animal on Christmas will add a whole new level of stress for you and for the puppy.
Dog expert Cesar Millan points out: "You've just thrown [them] into a completely alien environment with no direction, and these early associations are going to stick. The place is unfamiliar, it smells different, and there doesn't seem to be any way out." Unless you're going to stop the whole Christmas gift-giving process and devote your whole day to the dog, chances are you're going to really stress out your new pup.
2. Pets Are Family Members
Living, breathing creatures like puppies and kittens aren't toys - they're new members of the family that will require love and attention for the next 9 to 15 years. Puppies should require a great amount of thought and preparation. They need a fleet of supplies, from crates and beds to food and toys, and they need the time and space to acclimate to their new things and home.
3. Children Might Want to Have a Say
When I've adopted animals in the past, the shelter workers always ask if every member of the family is present and OK with the adoption of a pet. One shelter wouldn't even let me adopt my pup until I brought my roommate in to confirm that she was on board. Largely, this process should hold true for kids. If you're expecting children to love and take care of a puppy for the next decade at least, they should have some say in which puppy they get, otherwise this is just a gift for you, and that's not the way gifts work.
4. Instead, Plan a Family Trip
That being said, you can still "give a puppy" for Christmas. Instead of putting a puppy in a box or stocking, give your kid the puppy toys, the crate, or a leash. Explain to them what this gift means, and that they'll be able to help pick out and rescue their new pet. They'll feel more invested in the process because they get to help. As part of your gift, pick a day as a family to go look at puppies, and after Christmas has died down, come up with a plan. This way, your family is happy and prepared, and a puppy has the best shot at adjusting to their new home and family with ease.
