21 Things That Inevitably Happen When You Travel With Kids During the Holidays
My family usually hits the road for the holidays, heading to the beach with my extended family for a vacation that only in the last year (when my son was almost 4 and my daughter was almost 7) began to feel like one. Before that, it was a stressful trip that took so much time and energy to execute that if it wasn't for that alluring Florida sunshine, I might not have gone.
Between buying and wrapping gifts early so I could ship them to our destination in time for Santa's arrival to renting baby supplies we couldn't fit in our suitcases to throwing our rules about screen time and sugar consumption out the window, traveling with kids for the holidays is a jolly sh*tshow. But hey, the holidays are all about togetherness, right? And nothing brings more togetherness than being stuck in a tiny condo for a week (or even better, a car for an eight-hour-plus drive) with your toddlers. If you're planning a trip with your kids over the holidays - to Grandma's house or somewhere more exotic - here are 21 things you need to prepare yourself for.
Michelle Obama Opens Up About Why She'll "Never Forgive" Trump
In Michelle Obama's upcoming memoir, Becoming, the former first lady speaks candidly about everything from the near-decade she spent in the White House to the difficulties she faced while trying to conceive her two daughters. According to a recent book review from The Washington Post, Obama also spends some time discussing Donald Trump's birtherism theory about former President Barack Obama and why she'll "never forgive him" for potentially endangering her family.
Years before being elected president, Trump pushed a conspiracy theory claiming that then-President Obama was born in Kenya. After some prodding from the former Apprentice star, Obama released his birth certificate in 2011, revealing that he was born in Hawaii. Michelle Obama calls the theory "crazy and mean-spirited" in her memoir, claiming that it was "deliberately meant to stir up the wingnuts and kooks."
"What if someone with an unstable mind loaded a gun and drove to Washington?" she writes. "What if that person went looking for our girls? Donald Trump, with his loud and reckless innuendos, was putting my family's safety at risk. And for this I'd never forgive him."
This, of course, isn't all she gets personal about. The former FLOTUS also opens up about marital problems that she and her husband have had in the past as well as her life as an advocate for women and girls. Becoming will officially be out on Nov. 13.

Plane-Friendly Face Masks That Won't Make You Enemies on Your Next Flight
It's one thing to see photos of people masking on a plane on Instagram. It's another to actually try it in real life. Some masks just aren't turbulent-friendly: They could be packed with ultraslick serums that may cause it to slip and slide off of your face. The serums and creams may make their way onto your clothing, or worse, the clothing of a stranger next to you who is just trying to mind their business and get some sleep. Here are our picks for plane-friendly masks that require minimal effort, clean-up, and risk of making enemies on your next 17-hour flight.
My Ethnicity Is a Mystery, but Here's Why I'll Never Take a DNA Test
Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Carrie Carrollo
If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me about my ethnic background, it's probably safe to say that I'd be living in a far bigger New York City apartment right now. But while everything about the answer to that question seems pretty straightforward on paper - I was adopted from China at 7 months old and therefore am Chinese, end of story - if you take one look at me in person, it's not so crystal clear.
With zero information about my birth parents, the idea that there could be more to my story isn't all that far-fetched.
As I've grown up and into my features, they've become gradually less characteristic of one Asian race over another. Sure, it'd be easy to brush off my so-called "racial ambiguity" and accept my birthplace as a clear answer about where my lineage lies. But with zero information about my birth parents - like myself, babies are often left in a public location with only their birthdate - the idea that there could be more to my story isn't all that far-fetched.
A rise in inquiries from others has only served to pique my interest in knowing more. I've been randomly stopped on the street, questioned by curious strangers in elevators. During a teenage hostessing gig at a Japanese restaurant, families from various Asian backgrounds constantly called me over - not to ask for extra napkins, but to ask where I was from. Among Uber drivers, it seems to be a favorite topic of (often uncomfortable) conversation, too. Inviting people to guess has become my default reply, because I'm genuinely interested to know what they think. I've heard everything from Japanese to Korean, Filipino to Hawaiian, and every mixed race in between - but Chinese is rarely anyone's first thought. Regardless of whether we share the same (supposed) background, everyone seems stumped by where I'm from.
Inevitably, I've entertained the idea of ordering a DNA test - and my mom even offered to foot the bill. With sites like Ancestry offering the ability to connect you with other people who share your DNA (cool!) and 23andMe offering the extra benefit of learning about your health . . . well, there have never been more options to choose from when it comes to discovering where you're from. But while I find the opportunities intriguing - and the health option extremely smart, given my unknown family medical history - a conversation I once had with a friend has kept me from taking the plunge. Jokingly, she asked what I'd do if the results came back "100 percent Chinese" and how I'd feel more generally once I finally had the answers. It's then I realized that instead of providing some sort of closure, the potential of both outcomes felt oddly disheartening.
I see my uncommon mix of features and ever-unfolding story as an asset - things that are completely, totally, unquestionably mine.
Knowing next to nothing about my roots has been a never-ending source of confusion in my life; it's been painful, often excluding, and it can leave anyone (especially a child) feeling completely insecure about who they are. For years, race was a subject that made me shut down, internally wishing for information that was impossible to know. But these days, I see my uncommon mix of features and ever-unfolding story as an asset - things that are completely, totally, unquestionably mine. I know I'll never look like another girl in the room, and I think that's actually pretty damn cool.
Of course, taking a DNA test would be helpful. But the lack of information challenges me to learn about myself in far more profound ways than any vials of saliva or percentages on a computer screen can fulfill. Whether it's some form of security blanket or simply that I just like the mystery, I'm now at peace with the "unknown" - and not only is that refreshing, but has become a part of my identity. When you're an adopted kid who shares no physical traits with your family, the things you can own and feel confident about are the ones that become significant. What's really important to me is that, even without any clear answers, I still feel whole. And as an added bonus, I'll always have an interesting way to break the ice.

These Grooms Broke Out Into Choreography During Their First Dance, and OMG, Those Moves!
Trust us when we tell you: PJ and Noah aren't regular grooms, they're cool grooms! Some couples take ballroom dance classes to practice for their wedding, but these two, well, they did something spectacular for their first dance as husbands, and they've swept us right off our feet. They started off slow dancing to Morgana King's "It's a Quiet Thing," which is when we imagine they whispered into each other's ears about how the guests had no idea what they were about to witness. Then, what seemed like a technical difficulty unraveled into "Conga" by Miami Sound Machine and Gloria Estefan.
PJ and Noah played it totally cool at first, acting like they were handling the music snafu nonchalantly, but BOOM, just like that, they broke out their greatest moves and the real dance began with songs from Madonna, KC and the Sunshine Band, and more. These two are so talented, and it's clear they put so much love, dedication, and effort into making sure every single guest could feel their passion. We just feel bad for the next couple getting married in their family, because how does anyone compete with that?! To my future husband, I hope you're reading this and practicing your footwork. Watch the mesmerizing first dance above.
I Planned My Wedding in Just 2 Months, and It Was the Best Decision
My 24th birthday will be one that I remember forever. It was the day my then-boyfriend popped the question. His proposal was perfect: he had taken me out to dinner at an elegant restaurant before bringing me back to the waterfront hotel and bar where we had met three years earlier. He ushered me into their largest suite where the candles had already been lit and a birthday cake sat waiting on the table surrounded by a pile of presents. Well, you guessed it. Inside one of those presents was my ring. I was in awe as he proceeded to get down on one knee and asked me to marry him.
Like any bride-to-be, I wanted to start planning immediately. We decided on a Fall wedding - early November when New England is at its most glorious - which gave us a solid 15 months to plan and save.
Exactly one month later, my dad was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer, and his prognosis was grim. Once the dust settled, we decided on a new date. The only thing was that it gave us just two months to pull everything together.
With only two months to plan, we didn't have the luxury of stressing over details or feeling cheated out of the things we had to sacrifice in order to make our wedding happen. Having to make sacrifices on your wedding day for the sake of time and budget sounds awful at first. After all, you only get to do this once, right? (At least that's what most starry-eyed brides hope for, anyway.) But in the end, we were forced to sit down and think about what really mattered. For us, it was having the people we loved there to share in our day. Then everything else just fell into place.
We were forced to sit down and think about what really mattered. For us, it was having the people we loved there to share in our day.
Both our church and venue, which normally hosts up to three weddings at a time, were completely open on the day we chose. Since it was only two months away, and the odds of anyone else coming along to book the venue were slim, they gave us their grand ballroom, something typically reserved for events with a minimum of 300 people (a far cry from our 100). And with Christmas less than three weeks away, the entire venue was already beautifully decorated. Once ordered, my gown came in earlier than expected and needed minimal alterations, and the photographer, DJ, and limo service were happy to have some business in their quiet season. In fact, everything went so smoothly that I still wonder why people actually feel the need to spend a year (or more) of their lives planning a party.
So what, exactly, did we sacrifice? Not much. Since it was so close to Christmas, we chose not to burden our friends with the responsibilities and costs associated with being in a bridal party. Instead, we had a maid of honor and a best man. And rather than invite every single person we've ever met, we kept it intimate with just our closest friends and family members. I didn't get the $1,500 bouquet I had originally envisioned, but that's OK because the simple roses that I carried dried nicely and now serve as a decoration on our mantle. Other than that, I can't think of a single thing that we missed having.
Ten years and three children later, there's a lot about my wedding day that I don't even remember. But I'll tell you what I do remember. I remember the look on my dad's face when he walked me down the aisle, and how we were both crying and laughing as we danced to the song he had chosen. I remember my new husband breaking it down on the dance floor to Michael Jackson (I had no idea he actually knew how to dance) and not being able to contain my laughter. I remember one hell of an after party at the hotel bar, complete with a live band, that continued on well into the night in the hallway of rooms that our family and friends occupied. So you see, the invitations, favors, flowers, and centerpieces are easily forgotten. In a couple of years, you won't remember the details of the party you worked so hard to plan. But you will remember the moments - especially if they're the last - you had with the people you love.
After This Couple's Wedding in Tulum, Mexico, They Had the Most Epic Trash-the-Dress Shoot
We've been in awe of some of the trash-the-dress photo shoots we've seen so far, and Roni and Romina felt just as inspired to do the same after their wedding. The couple met at the early age of 16 and didn't reconnect with each other until 20 years later. Clearly, the two hit it off when reuniting since they eventually exchanged vows on a beach in Tulum, Mexico.
After their nuptials, their photographer, Hernán Santiago, began the session in a cenote in the middle of the Mayan jungle. Roni and Romina were fully submerged underwater, making for some incredible shots! They then followed their epic photo shoot with equally beautiful sunset portraits on the beach.
Hernán told us that he loved working with this couple. "So in love, easy-going, and fun to work with," he said. "Favorite part of the shoot was definitely the beach shots; very challenging with the waves and all, but this couple were great and we had some pretty good laughs."

A Woman Surprised Her Girlfriend With a Same-Day Proposal and Engagement Party
Dillon thought she was just modeling with her girlfriend, Hayley, in a styled wedding shoot, but it turned out to be much more eventful than that. While she talked about their relationship and the reasons she loved Hayley, Hayley surprised her with a proposal! Liz and Molly's "Confetti Color Love Extravaganza" Might Just Be Our Favorite Wedding of the Year
From Summer camp to acai bowls, Liz and Molly's love story is romantic, sweet, and fun - and their joy-filled big day is sure to put a smile on your face with its beautiful details, meaningful moments, and copious amount of confetti.
Liz and Molly met as Summer camp counselors in Santa Cruz, CA, and, as Molly put it, "instantly hit it off." Friendship grew into something more, and the two dated - long-distance in the beginning - before Molly found a way to turn their their weekend tradition of eating homemade acai bowls in bed into a proposal. "One morning, I made Liz a special acai bowl with the ring on top of a strawberry," Molly told POPSUGAR. "I brought it to her in bed and told her I put something special on top. (She thought it was chocolate.) Then, as I brought the acai bowl closer, she saw the ring and screamed!"
"Every little detail was done with the intention of bringing colorful joy to everyone!"
Here's what Molly told POPSUGAR about what she calls their "confetti color love extravaganza" at The Fig House in Los Angeles. Keep reading to see all the fantastic details as well, from edible-glitter-topped cotton candy to a surprise flashmob, late-night pizza, and a silent disco. And make sure you watch the wedding video at the end for a story that'll bring on the waterworks.
POPSUGAR: What was your favorite decorative or event detail of the day?
Molly: Our favorite event detail of the day was the significance of hexagons woven throughout our wedding. Story behind the hexagon (words from our ceremony):
"People often say wedding bands are a perfect circle, with no beginning and no end. These rings are different. These rings are in the shape of a hexagon. Hexagons are strong shapes and symbols of union, harmony, and balance. They are the shapes that bees use to house their precious honey, and while one single paper-thin wax hexagon may be small and fragile, when joined together with the tens of thousands of others, it forms a honeycomb that holds dozens of pounds of honey. Just like bees, we become greater when we are open to seeing ourselves as a piece of a bigger puzzle. These rings symbolize the realization that you two are better together than alone."
Hexagons were everywhere on our special day: a wood hexagon altar made by Liz's dad, hexagon tiles as placards, hexagon table numbers, our hexagon wedding rings, hexagon-shaped cookies, and hexagon tiles at The Fig House.

PS: What was the most emotional moment of the day?
Molly: The most emotional part of the day was hearing each other's vows. They were not traditional vows but rather full-blown speeches to each other. In Liz's vows, she told a story that had EVERYONE in tears. It's about a card from a gas station. The story is told at the start of our wedding video.
One more emotional part was feeling the massive amount of love energy that surrounded Liz and myself from the start of the wedding until the very end. Our guests cheered as we walked down the aisle; there was clapping and cheering during our ceremony; people were screaming when we came out to the song "Bend Ova" by Lil Jon and Tyga; and we were showered in confetti all night on the dance floor as people scooped up confetti from the confetti cannon blasts and poured it on our heads. The feeling of joy was overwhelming in the best way possible.
PS: What inspired the overall look and theme of the wedding?
Molly: The theme of the wedding was color and confetti. Colors make us feel joy, and we wanted that to be the feel of our wedding: joy! When we were picking our venue, we instantly fell in love with The Fig House because it's a colorful paradise. We told all of our guests to wear their most colorful wedding attire, and boy, did they listen! Our florist picked vibrant wildflowers that made the day so bright. Our bridesmaids wore radiant jewel-toned dresses. We hand-selected the brightest colors for the confetti cannon that blasted on the dance floor. Starting from the custom-made colorful invitations and ending with the dance floor being covered in 15 pounds of confetti, every little detail was done with the intention of bringing colorful joy to everyone!

There's 1 Ingredient in Turkey Gravy That Could Be a Problem If You're on the Keto Diet
If this is your first Thanksgiving on the keto diet, you're probably still figuring out which of the classic dishes you can actually eat. Let's start with the star of the table: Thanksgiving turkey is keto, but what about the gravy you pour on top?
It all comes down to one ingredient. The broth, drippings, and seasonings that serve as the base for gravy are low-carb, Meghan Lyle, RDN, health coach at Arivale, told POPSUGAR. "But instead of using flour or cornstarch as a thickening agent, choose additional fats like oils and meat drippings." With this method, the thickness of your gravy will come from the reduction of the sauce, instead of flour.
If you prefer a traditional thickening agent, you can also swap in keto-friendly tapioca starch.
But what if you're not the one making dinner this year? Know this: the number of carbs in a serving of gravy varies widely, depending on how much of any one ingredient was added during cooking. If you want to stay firmly in ketosis, it's probably best to pass.

If the Scale Makes You Feel Like Sh*t, Read This CrossFit Competitor's Inspiring Message
CrossFit competitor and coach Dani Horan posted this selfie of her six-pack and her adorable dog on Instagram with a caption that read, "Weight: Unknown. Height: 5'6". Daily Calories: 3200-3500+." She explained, "I've stopped weighing myself & focused more on how my body feels." While weighing yourself can definitely keep you accountable and be one aspect in monitoring your progress, it can also be detrimental if stepping on the scale makes you feel bad about yourself.
Dani added, "The scale can fluctuate so MUCH, for a million different reasons. And honestly, sometimes I would allow it to get the best of me. So I stopped weighing myself & started going off of Three Categories: Gymnastics, Bodyweight Movements & Strength." Celebrity fitness trainer, nutritionist, and New York Times bestselling author Harley Pasternak agrees and told POPSUGAR he isn't a fan of the scale. "I'm more focused on 'How do you feel?' and 'How do you look?'" he said.
Does this sound familiar? Do you weigh yourself often, maybe every single morning, and your mood for the rest of the day depends on the number that flashes back at you? It can be so disheartening, especially if you're working hard at the gym, eating well, getting enough sleep . . . and seeing the number go up. The scale is definitely not the most accurate way to measure your progress, and we like what Dani suggested: go by how you feel, what your body can do, and how strong and flexible you're getting.
"I'm not the leanest I've been for sure & that's OK because I feel healthy, strong & light! We get this idea in our head that we need to be a certain weight," Dani wrote. If you're taking care of yourself and feeling healthy and strong, then that's all that matters. Focus on eating whole foods to fuel your body for life, "whatever 'Life' is for you - Athlete, Mom, Golfer, Soccer Player, Runner...the list goes on."
"Let's stop trying to be a certain weight," Dani added, and we couldn't agree more. Who cares what the number on the scale says? Screw the stupid scale! It can't measure how badass you are, and if it just makes you feel like crap every time you step on it, then it's actually holding you back from being the best version of you. "Don't let that silly scale control your life. YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE IN CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE!" Dani wrote. We totally needed the reminder. BRB . . . throwing my scale in the dumpster.
On the Keto Diet and Headed to Olive Garden? Here's What You Should Order
Contrary to what you may have heard, there's more to Olive Garden than never-ending pasta bowls and bottomless baskets of breadsticks. (Not that we're complaining.) That's good news for those on the keto diet - because if you're one of them, you already know that breadsticks aren't on the menu when you're trying to stay under 50 grams of carbs per day.
Olive Garden's nutrition information is available on the restaurant's website, making it super simple to build a meal that will fit into your daily macros. There are a surprising number of keto-friendly dishes you can order straight off the menu, but we've pulled together tips for custom-ordering a low-carb pasta bowl, too. Find what you're craving here, and pull up a seat - it's dinnertime.
- If you're just here for the apps: An order of cheesy, herby stuffed mushrooms will cost you only 13 grams of carbs. If you don't have quite that much wiggle room left in the day, go for Olive Garden's famous house salad (sans croutons, and sub olive oil for the dressing), and you'll come in at under 10 grams of carbs for your entire meal.
- If you're in the mood for chicken: The dinner portions of both the chicken piccata and the chicken margherita have only 12 and 13 grams of carbs, respectively. They're both served with the parmesan-crusted zucchini, which actually has the lowest carb count of any of Olive Garden's side dishes and is higher in fat than the steamed vegetables.
- If you'd prefer seafood: The herb-grilled salmon has just under 10 grams of carbs and comes with a tasty parmesan garlic broccoli.
- If you're feeling saucy: Take a little creative license with the menu, and try building your own pasta bowl, sans pasta. Very nicely ask your server for a pasta bowl with alfredo sauce and chicken or Italian sausage, but ask for it to be served over broccoli or garden veggies. You may get a few weird looks, but when you finally satisfy that craving, it won't matter.

This Is When Your Body Burns the Most Calories at Rest (Hint: It's Not When You Sleep!)
You know working out ups your calorie burn: when your body is active, it expends more energy, therefore burning calories. But your body also continues to burn calories at rest to keep you alive, because your brain activity, your heart pumping, and digestion all require energy.
How many calories your body burns also depends on the time of day, a new study found. To find out the role circadian rhythm plays in metabolism, researchers studied seven people in a special lab. The participants had no idea what time it was outside because there were no clocks, windows, phones, or internet, and they were assigned specific times to go to bed and wake up. Then, researchers adjusted these times by four hours each night to mimic traveling across time zones every day for three weeks.

"Because they were doing the equivalent of circling the globe every week, their body's internal clock could not keep up, and so it oscillated at its own pace," Jeanne Duffy, PhD, co-author of the study and a member of the Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders at Brigham and Women's Hospital, told ScienceDaily. "This allowed us to measure metabolic rate at all different biological times of day."
Researchers found that resting energy expenditure, or REE, was highest in the afternoon and early evening. On the flip side, it was at its lowest during the late night. Dr. Duff told ScienceDaily these findings show that it's not just what you eat, but when when you eat it, and when you rest, that impacts your metabolism and determines how much energy you burn and what gets stored as fat.
This Arms and Abs Tabata Workout Is So Good, You'll Want to Share It With All Your Friends
Try saying tabata fives times fast. OK, now that you're more than likely smiling and we've got that out of the way, it's time to seriously talk about tabata.
It's a high-intensity interval style of training where you perform an exercise all out for 20 seconds, followed by 10 seconds of rest. You alternate between the two intervals for eight rounds for a total of four minutes. Because the goal is to go all out during the 20-second intervals, it shouldn't take long for your muscles to fatigue.
If this sounds like your type of thing, give NASM-certified personal trainer Kelsey Wells's tough tabata workout a shot.
The Tabata Workout
Because you'll be doing these exercises at a maximum intensity, we recommend doing a dynamic warmup before getting started. Complete 20 seconds of each exercise in the order listed, take 10 seconds of rest, and then advance to the following exercise. Repeat for a total of three to four rounds. To prevent extreme soreness, be sure to stretch and foam roll afterward.
- Half burpee
- Flutter kick
- Triceps kickback
- Bicycle crunch
- Half Arnold
Lady Gaga Details Her "Mental Health Crisis" in a Way We've Never Heard Before
Lady Gaga has never been one to hold back when it comes to her physical and emotional health, but she wasn't always this way, and she's on a mission to change that stigma associated with opening up. On Thursday night, the A Star Is Born actress received an award at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation's Patron of the Artists Awards, and her 25-minute speech was dedicated to the need for better mental health support in the entertainment industry. She candidly spoke about her own struggles and what she personally wants to change about the way we deal with certain issues. More specifically, she preached, "Let's f*cking change the world!," before closing her speech.
"I began to notice that I would stare off into space and black out for seconds or minutes," she shared. "I would see flashes of things I was tormented by, experiences that were filed away in my brain with 'I'll deal with you later' for many years because my brain was protecting me, as science teaches us. These were also symptoms of disassociation and PTSD and I did not have a team that included mental health support."
Gaga said she wishes she'd had the support system she does now when she was struggling at 19 years old. "I wish there had been a system in place to protect and guide me, a system in place to empower me to say no to things I felt I had to do, a system in place to empower me to stay away from toxic work environments or working with people who were of seriously questionable character. There were days that I struggled or couldn't make it to work, and I don't want that for other artists or anyone."
Watch what could be considered Lady Gaga's most inspiring speech ahead, and read about how stars like Jon Hamm, Ariana Grande, and Ryan Reynolds have spoken openly about their mental health struggles.

I Meditate Regularly, but Nothing Has Eased My Anxiety More Than This Sound Bath
Until recently, I had never even heard of a sound bath, but after reading about the benefits - reduced stress, anger, depression, and fatigue, according to one study - I decided to give it a try. If you're unfamiliar, a sound bath is a meditation session in which an instructor plays singing bowls, filling the room with beautiful sounds. It's an ancient practice that is thought to alter brain waves, allowing you to slip into deep relaxation. Still, I didn't quite know what to expect.
I felt as though I had been meditating for only a short time when suddenly the music ended.
When it was time for the session to start, everyone was told to lie down on the floor with our eyes closed. The yoga instructor began playing crystal singing bowls, and at first, the music was a bit overwhelming. It felt like the sound was bouncing around in my ear, and I was nervous that I wouldn't be able to relax. However, a few minutes into the meditation, I started to find it very soothing. I meditate regularly on my own and found myself entering a deep meditative state much quicker than I'm able to at home.
The beautiful waves of sound washed over and through me, and I felt as though I had been meditating for only a short time when suddenly the music ended. Forty-five minutes had passed.
I left the studio with a sense of peace I didn't have when I walked in. I could tell that my anxiety was greatly reduced. (A friend who had joined me said she felt calm as well.) The effects seemed to stick with me for a couple days, which is impressive with two children and so many things on my plate. I loved the sound bath so much that I bought a singing bowl to use during my private meditations. While it is relaxing, it doesn't compare to the sound bath experience - something I can't recommend enough. Moving forward, whenever I feel stress piling up, I'll turn to a sound bath for relief.
Can't Run More Than a Mile? Here's How to Make It Feel Easier
Many newbie runners give up on running because within a mile (or less), their legs are on fire and they're breathing so hard they feel like they're a huff and a puff away from passing out. Don't expect to be able to run five miles right from the get-go - it takes time to build endurance, and here are five ways to do it.
- Check your form: A broken machine won't run well, and the same goes for your body. Poor running form can cause aches and pains that make you want to stop in your tracks, so check your running form to ensure your body will feel like it can keep going and going.
- Run more often: As with anything, practice makes perfect. You can't expect to run like a gazelle if you only lace up your sneaks twice a week. Spread out your workouts over the week, running shorter distances more often. Try doing one- or two-mile workouts (choose a distance that works for your level of ability) five times a week. You'll be surprised at how quickly running starts to feel easier.
- Increase slowly: Once your breath starts to even out and your muscles become less fatigued, you can start increasing your mileage. Don't get ahead of yourself, though. Follow the 10 percent rule: never increase your weekly mileage by more than 10 percent of the previous week. Not only will this help to prevent injury, but it'll also prevent your mind from feeling overwhelmed by doing too much too soon.
- Intervals: Running faster may be harder, but it'll increase muscle strength and lung capacity, which are key to building your endurance. Start off by adding a few 10-second sprinting intervals every few minutes, and gradually build up to 30-second sprints.
- Head for the hills: Running up hills is another way to build leg and core strength as well as lung endurance. Increase the incline on the treadmill, or find some natural hills outside and do a shorter version of this hill repeat workout. At first you'll curse the hills, but after a couple weeks, you'll be craving them.
I Consumed Fresh Ginger Every Day For 1 Week, and These Were the Results
I've always loved the flavor of ginger. Spicy and pungent, it is delicious in tea form and almost completely cuts the bitterness of vegetables in fresh juices and smoothies (adding ginger is basically the only way I can stomach beets in my juices). And while I've always known it's frequently used to aid digestion, I will humbly admit I had no idea the spice boasts such a sprawling list of medicinal benefits. The experts say ginger root is a stellar anti-inflammatory, improves heart health, eases nausea and motion sickness, helps expel free radicals from the body, and is even linked with lowering cholesterol.
If this spicy root has this much power, I just had to test it out. I decided to consume fresh ginger every day for seven days. While there are many ways to consume it, I opted to head straight to my juicer each morning for a ginger and lemon shot and continued my ritual with a cup of homemade ginger tea at night. Whipping up the tea is easy; you simply pour a cup of boiling water over a hunk of raw ginger and let it sit for a few minutes.

I Am Now a Woman Who Subscribes to Sparkling Water, and I Accept My Extremely Millennial Fate
UPDATE: In November, UGLY launched its newest flavor, watermelon. While Fall might not seem like the most opportune time for such a Summer-y taste, UGLY's cofounder Hugh Thomas says he's not particularly interested in rules about what you "should" drink in what season: "Watermelon in the cooler months . . . Why not?" The new flavor is available in stores in NYC and online now.
I admit it: when a box of sparkling water from Ugly Drinks showed up on my desk, I ignored it for several days. The ubiquity of sparkling water just feels so embarrassingly . . . millennial. The bubble-infused beverage has become such a mainstay in the diets and at the social gatherings of 20- and 30-somethings that it's hard to remember how we hydrated before it. Why the obsession? Based on absolutely no research, I am certain we can chalk it up to two key factors: global warming (we're thirsty!) and our generation's propensity to drink less alcohol (we're boring!).
I like sparkling water; I don't love it. I'll take a coconut LaCroix - the best LaCroix flavor, don't @ me - but only if there's no wine. I despise the noncommittal, vaguely fruit-adjacent flavor of so many sparkling waters, as though someone just served me Pellegrino from a glass they forgot they drank Hi-C out of earlier. Others are so aggressively bubbly you have to sip them in slow-mo to prevent hot-air ballooning (a real medical condition I swear I didn't just make up). So, once I did snap open a cherry Ugly, I was surprised I liked it. A lot. Here's why:
- Like most trendy sparkling waters, Ugly is also sugar-, preservative-, and calorie-free . . .
- But it shares more in common in the flavor department with the Crystal Geyser sparkling juices my mom used to buy at Costco when I was a kid than it does with many of today's wimpier-tasting carbonated waters.
- Ugly smells good, and it tastes like it smells. The peach flavor is actually peachy. The lemon-lime variety isn't artificial.
- The bubbles are smooth, and the carbonation isn't crazy abrasive.
- Let's not be coy about it: the bright blue cans, laden with a vintage, pop-art-inspired bubble font, are practically begging to be Instagrammed.
When I threw a party over Memorial Day weekend, at least a dozen people asked me about the adorable sparkling water I was hawking liberally from the fridge. Where could they buy it? Well, buckle up, my friends, because this is where it gets super millennial. The UK-based beverage line is available in a few spots on the East Coast . . . but is mostly sold via a monthly online subscription. I initially felt ridiculous subscribing to water with bubbles in it. Then, I considered that a) I am a sucker for wine clubs, which operate in much the same manner; b) I love receiving things in the mail; and c) I have to stop myself from consuming an entire case of cherry-flavored Ugly in a single sitting. Up I signed. My monthly supply of 24 cans of cherry Ugly, with tax and shipping, comes to $27.20. That's $1.13 per can. What else can you even buy for $1.13 these days? A single pencil? One lightly used Ziploc bag? I don't know.
If you want to give Ugly Drinks a try, the brand was kind enough to give me this code to share with POPSUGAR readers, which lands you 10 percent off your first order: UGLYWATERMELON. It's simple, really. You, like me, can recognize that your sparkling water resistance is futile and fully accept your millennial fate, or continue to eschew effervescence in favor of a flat-water existence. The choice is yours.
This Woman Expertly Embroiders Pet Portraits, and We've Never Seen ANYTHING Like It
When it comes to spoiling our pets, the sky is truly the limit, particularly around the holiday season. Amanda Neely, an expert embroiderer, certainly knows how to capitalize on our fanatic pet obsession - and can you blame her? Her Etsy Shop CrewelGhoul is completely dedicated to crazy-detailed pet portraits, all done on hoops or hats.
"I got started embroidering about 10 years ago as a side hobby and outlet to relieve stress and taught myself basic stitches," Amanda told POPSUGAR. "Then about three or four years ago I thought it would be fun to try to embroider pet portraits, and it turned into a big challenge! So I really dove into learning about 'thread painting' and making the portraits more realistic. It's still a challenge, but a very rewarding one!"
Is there a better way to show your pets how much you love them other than commissioning a jaw-dropping 4-Inch Portrait ($125)? No! Prices increase by the size of the hoop. You can also snag a hat with your pet's face on it for $100. Scroll through to get a look at some of Amanda's eye-catching work.

Disney World Is Infinitely Better Than Disneyland, and Here's Why
When it comes to Disney Parks and Resorts, Walt Disney World has the upper hand over Disneyland. While I might be a little biased, as Walt Disney World is my home park and I've been an annual pass holder for more than 20 years, there really is something special about seeing Walt's vision come to life all over Orlando, Florida. Yes, Disneyland is the original and has a ton of nostalgia - they even have better churro options - but I stand by my opinion that Disney World is the superior US Disney park.
So, do you want to know why Walt Disney World is better than Disneyland? Read through to see.

If You Want the Best Night's Sleep (Every Night!), You Need These 3 Pillows
In order to have a good night of sleep, all the stars need to be aligned. I need to have exercised that day in order to be tired enough. I need to have stopped drinking coffee by noon. I need the kids to be asleep so I don't have one of them tiptoeing into my room and whispering two inches from my face that they're scared, or thirsty, or that they drew a picture of a rainbow for me at school (amazingly sweet, but not at 10 p.m. when we should both be asleep).
I need darkness, quiet, the perfect temperature, two lovies in my hands (pink and blue) that my kids no longer snuggle with, and these three pillows. Yeah I know. I'm high maintenance when it comes to sleep, but forget everything else and give me my three pillows and I'm good. Ever since I started sleeping with this trifecta of cozy comfort, it's changed my life. If you struggle with sleep, these three pillows could be your ticket to slumbertown.
