Here's How Many Times a Week You Should Do Abs, According to 4 Trainers
We've discussed before how much cardio and strength training you should be doing, but what most people are really wondering is how often to train your abs. To find out the answer, I reached out to four separate trainers who each differ in their specialties. Here's what you need to do to chisel out that six-pack.
From a Pilates Instructor
Molly Sigman, certified Pilates instructor and Equinox Pilates manager, recommends doing a bit of core work every day or incorporating core exercises into your workouts three to five times a week. "I also focus on using my deep transverse abdominis abdominals when doing ballet and flow yoga," she told POPSUGAR. "This way, I leave feeling incredibly strong and centered."
She also shared that the Pilates Ab Series of Five and oblique V-crunches are her go-to moves when traveling. For more effective moves, try planks, wood chops, and yoga twists.
From a TRX and Spinning Instructor
Corey Phelps, a certified BASI Pilates teacher and TRX and Spinning instructor, says to perform ab-specific work three times a week (roughly every other day) for results. Additionally, she recommends incorporating cardio and compound, total-body movements into your workouts, like squats and deadlifts, which "target large muscle groups, work the core, and pack a significant fat-burning punch."
From a HIIT Trainer
Nick Pags, HIIT coach at Ripped Fitness, said: "You can do abs every day. Your abs are unique because they can take more of a beating than any other part of the body." Because your core is so heavily utilized in your daily physical functioning, it can handle more than you think. Nick said that under 10 minutes of "excruciating" ab work is plenty - but no rests are allowed.
"You must push to absolute fatigue multiple times throughout an ab-focused session," he said.
Additionally, consistency and proper form are key.
From a Personal Trainer
"When training abs, I have my clients do them every day before their weightlifting sessions," said Ridge Davis, a personal trainer in West Hollywood, CA. "The abdominals are the powerhouse for all movements and exercises, so it is critical to get them activated before doing the main part of your weightlifting session."
Ridge shared that he breaks down ab training into programs: one program that focuses on the rectus abdominus (abdominal muscles) with planks, hollow holds, and leg raises, and a second program that targets the obliques with side planks, cable chops, and Russian twists.
However, all trainers unanimously agreed that exercise won't help you sculpt your midsection without a proper diet. Eating clean foods, following a high-fiber, low-sugar diet, and maintaining a calorie deficit were all recommendations.
Bob Harper Reveals the Carbs He Ate to Lose 40 Pounds, and They're Delicious
Bob Harper has helped hundreds of people lose weight as a trainer and host of The Biggest Loser. But the superfit fitness guru, who suffered a heart attack in 2017 and is sharing his story as part of AstraZeneca's Survivors Have Heart program, has transformed his own life. He lost 40 pounds and shifted from a low-carb Paleo diet to a low-fat, carb-friendly diet.
In fact, Bob wrote all about how carbs are not only allowed on a diet plan but can actually help you lose weight in his book The Super Carb Diet. He told POPSUGAR that he lost 40 pounds after his heart attack and has been eating carbs every single day. Not only are they an essential macronutrient, but carbs give you the energy you need to perform your workouts.
As far as the carbs Bob eats to stay in shape, he sticks to fiber-rich whole grains and root vegetables. "I'll do whole grain bread," he told POPSUGAR. "I've gotten on this kick of eating brown rice cakes; I eat them all the time now." For breakfast, he'll have a rice cake with peanut butter and some yogurt. He also does brown rice if he's craving a carb as a side, or sweet potatoes or regular potatoes.
Overall, Bob said people will feel better if they incorporate carbs back into their diet and balance their plate with protein and fat. You don't need to tell us twice to eat carbs - pass the sweet potatoes!
If You're Struggling to Achieve Your Fitness Goals, This Trainer Has Some Advice For You
Making the decision to become healthier and more active is a major accomplishment in itself, so kudos to you. If you just started your new regimen last week, are going to start tomorrow, or are waiting until the new year (but really, you can start now), NASM-certified trainer Kelsey Wells shared two tips that will make this journey the most successful yet.
Her first piece of advice is simple. If you miss a day of training or eat something that wasn't on your meal plan, Kelsey said not to think of those moments as a failure. "There are going to be setbacks, you're not going to hit every single goal that you set, and that's okay." In the moment, it can feel like all or nothing, but it's not. One setback won't stop you from obtaining your goals. "All that matters is what you do next," she explained. "Realize there are going to be ups and downs, and go forward anyway. Always make your next choice healthier, or make those efforts count the next day if you've fallen off."
Kelsey's second piece of advice is to "find little things each day that you can achieve and be proud of." She admits that in the beginning, it's easy to become overwhelmed, which is why making small goals can help. These goals can be as simple as drinking more water or going on a walk during your lunch break. Having a large goal is fine, but according to Kelsey, breaking it down by the day and week will make it feel a lot easier to accomplish. "Crush your goals for that day, and focus on that. Celebrate the little victories," she said.
If you're ready to start getting back into shape, check out this four-week beginner's strength program - think of each workout as a goal you can crush.

This Is Why Walking Isn't Helping You Lose Weight, According to a Trainer
There's no denying that walking is a great form of exercise. Not only is it accessible pretty much anywhere you are, it's also easy on the joints and an activity all fitness levels can enjoy. However, if you're walking and noticing that your scale won't budge, there are a few tweaks you can make to turn walking into a fat-burning motion.
To get to the bottom of those possible reasons and how to fix them, we talked to personal trainer Chris Kelly, NASM, CPT, CF, LI. He verified that you absolutely can lose weight by walking, but you have to keep these things in mind to make the most of it.

On Keto and Craving Chipotle? Here's Exactly What You Should Order
If you're all in on the keto diet, you've already grieved a very dramatic breakup with Chipotle's warm, crunchy chips and overstuffed burritos. But even if your own menu has changed, you won't have much luck convincing your favorite food chains to stop tempting you with the carby goodness you're working so hard to avoid. When tacos come calling, use this guide to order a keto-friendly compromise.
The key is avoiding high-carb foods like rice, beans, and tortillas and replacing them with keto-approved foods like veggies and avocado. With just a few simple tips, you can put together a meal so tasty and filling, you'll (almost) forget about those chips. Here's how to do it:
- Start with a salad: You want the base of your meal to be a salad with romaine lettuce. From there, you get to have some fun.
- Add double meat: Any of Chipotle's meat options will work here. Try double chicken or a mix of chicken, beef, and pork.
- Pile on the veggies: Fajita veggies are your friend. Lots of food and very few carbs.
- Swap salad dressing for salsa: Red or green salsa will give your salad flavor, without tacking on carbs.
- Make it cheesy and creamy: Shredded cheese, queso, and sour cream will up the fat content of your meal, so why not have all three?
- Get the guac: Avocado is everyone's favorite healthy fat and worth the upcharge. Adding fat to your meal will leave you feeling fuller, longer.
- Skip everything else: There are a few salad toppings you should pass on because of their carb content. These include the honey vinaigrette dressing, rice, beans, and corn salsa. You'll also have to forgo that side of chips, but you already knew that.
Don't Fear Fruit! These 9 Low-Sugar Fruits Are the Best For Weight Loss
Fruit is not the enemy when it comes to weight loss! Registered dietitian Stephanie Ferrari, MS, RDN, told POPSUGAR, "According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, not a single age group 9 years old and over are getting enough fruit in their diet. Americans should be eating an average of two cups of fruit per day (recommendations vary depending on age and gender)." Jim White, RD, ACSM, owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studio, even suggested we aim for what the American Heart Association recommends, which is at least four servings of fruit per day, but no more than five.
Stephanie says that eating fruit is actually a great choice for those looking to lose weight. Since fresh fruit is low in calories and high in fiber, it can keep you satiated and satisfy a sweet tooth. It also contains water to keep you hydrated and plenty of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
Stephanie Clarke, RD, of C&J Nutrition, told POPSUGAR, "While the sugar from fruit is different in that it brings along fiber, vitamins, and minerals, too much sugar in any form can cause a steep rise in blood sugar levels that is then followed by a steep crash." So if you're watching your sugar intake, you should choose the low-sugar fruits listed here.

If You Want to Try Keto, Bob Harper Has This Important Tip Before You Start
Even if you've read all about what foods and drinks you can have on keto, gone grocery shopping, and prepared yourself for the keto flu, you shouldn't jump right into the keto diet. The Biggest Loser trainer and fitness guru Bob Harper cautions to make sure you get medical clearance before embarking on an incredibly strict diet like keto, which is high-fat, moderate-protein, and super-low-carb.
"I encourage people to make sure that you go talk to your doctor or your healthcare provider first and make sure that your body can withstand eating that kind of fat intake," Bob told POPSUGAR. Since suffering a near-fatal heart attack in 2017, Bob said his body can't handle eating that much fat. In fact, his doctors have him on a low-fat, carb-friendly, mostly plant-based diet now, which helped him lose 40 pounds.
Bob, who is sharing his heart attack and recovery story as part of AstraZeneca's Survivors Have Heart program, urges people to visit their doctor and get blood work to be aware of their heart health, even young people who think they are in good health or invincible. "Go to your doctor, get your blood test, check your cholesterol, your Lp(a) test," he said. "Know what is going on inside of you so you can do everything you can to prevent a heart attack or anything else that could potentially happen to you."
Ultimately, Bob said he isn't a harsh critic of keto. Rather, he wants people to be aware of their own bodies and their medical needs before making such a drastic dietary change. "If your doctor gives you the go-ahead and says that keto is great for you and you can live that very strict lifestyle, then go for it," he said.

This Kale and Herb Razor Is Such a Fun Stocking Stuffer For People Who Love to Cook
Kale stems stems are hard, fibrous, and tough to chew, so de-ribbing the leaves is the best way to go before you make a hearty kale salad or a quick sauté. If you're tired of using a knife for the prep process, you'll love this helpful kale and herb razor from Uncommon Goods ($15) that slides every last bit off the stem in a matter of seconds.
Made by industrial designer and ceramist Marta Cornwell, this cool tool has a slot for sheering kale leaves, plus three different-size holes for stripping herbs right off the stem. Pretty nifty, huh? Don't forget you can totally cook the nutritious stems instead of throwing them away - they're just not great raw. Shop the unique tool, and see more photos of it in action ahead. It could be the perfect stocking stuffer for a friend who loves making homemade kale chips.
After Surviving a Heart Attack, Bob Harper Ate This Every Single Day to Lose 40 Pounds
Bob Harper is a survivor. After helping hundreds of people lose weight as a trainer and host of The Biggest Loser, the fitness guru had to put his own health first when he suffered a near-fatal heart attack in 2017. As part of his recovery, Bob completely transformed his lifestyle and lost 40 pounds in the process. During a recent interview, he revealed to POPSUGAR some of the biggest changes he made.
"I've been eating carbs every single day," Bob said. He shifted from a Paleo diet to a more carb-friendly, plant-based way of eating. He even details how carbs can help people lose weight in his book The Super Carb Diet.
"People are so misinformed about carbs because they feel like they know that there's that trick: if you cut out all your carbs, you're going to lose weight," he told POPSUGAR. However, most people tend to gain the weight back because eating too little carbs isn't sustainable in the long-term. Instead, Bob recommends people balance their plates with all macronutrients: carbs, protein, and fat. This will help you feel more satisfied, won't make you feel deprived, and will give you enough energy to make it through the day and crush your workouts.
Of course, not all carbs are created equal. There are the simple refined carbs, such as sugar and white flour that are virtually empty calories and get processed as blood sugar, which Bob doesn't recommend. Instead, he suggests reaching for the more complex, fiber-rich carbs such as brown rice, whole grain bread, and sweet potatoes. Those are the carbs Bob eats on a regular basis.
During an appearance on The Dr. Oz Show, Bob recommended women eat about 30 grams of carbs at every meal. That equates to roughly two slices of whole grain bread, a half a cup of rice, or four ounces of whole grain pasta. This is in line with what registered dietitian and trainer Jim White, ACSM EX-P, owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios, recommends. Jim told POPSUGAR that your daily macro breakdown if you're trying to lose weight should be 40 percent carbs, 30 percent fat, and 30 percent protein. If you're trying to gain muscle, your carbs should be even higher: 55 percent carbs, 25 percent protein, and 20 percent fat. With carbs making up the majority of your diet, this will give you enough energy to work out and still eat your favorite complex carbs.

Not Getting the Results You Want? You Could Be Making One of These 10 Common Mistakes
So you've been diligently sticking to your fitness plan, working out every day, lifting heavy weights, and copying your favorite workouts from Instagram, but you're still not seeing results. What gives? Your dedication could actually be impeding your progress; working out too often is one of the 10 biggest workout mistakes outlined by NASM-certified personal trainer Max Weber.
Max listed out the common mistakes people make when they start a fitness plan. "It won't be easy, but if you avoid making these mistakes in the gym, you'll take your training to a whole new level and will make more progress than you can even imagine!" he wrote in an Instagram caption. "I can tell you from personal experience that I've made most (if not all) of these mistakes over the years, and I'm a work in progress like anyone else!"
These are the biggest mistakes Max outlined:
- Working out too frequently.
- Unnecessary amounts of training volume.
- No structure or lack of routine.
- Lack of intensity or effort.
- Neglecting proper form.
- Avoiding a full range of motion.
- Selecting weights that are too heavy or too light.
- Not following prescribed rest times.
- Not focusing on progressive overload.
- Mimicking your favorite Instagram "fitspo."
People may think that to get results, you need to go hard in the gym every day. In reality, Max recommends at least one or two rest days a week. And while it's great to get motivation and ideas from your favorite fitness accounts on Instagram, just because a certain workout works for them doesn't mean it will work for you. Instead, find a workout on POPSUGAR Fitness that's more in line with your goals and capabilities.
When you know better, you do better. So take these lessons to heart and go crush your goals!

I Can Only Sleep on a Superflat Pillow, and This Adjustable One From Amazon Is Life-Changing
Staying in a hotel is a nightmare for me. Almost every room features the fluffiest and thickest pillows, which is great for some people, but I always wake up with a neck ache the next day. Because I only like superflat pillows, the process of finding the perfect one usually consists of waiting two years for it to wear down and become my ideal thickness. This all changed when I discovered the Sleepgram Adjustable Hypoallergenic Pillow ($50) on Amazon.
The hypoallergenic pillow zips open and features two different-size inserts that you can remove or add, depending on what works best for you. The various inserts give you the opportunity to choose between three options: soft, medium, or firm support. So, you can choose what's best for you, depending on whether you sleep on your back, side, or stomach.
I have to admit I was hesitant to try this pillow because I'm so picky, but I was totally blown away.
I have to admit I was hesitant to try this pillow because I'm so picky, but I was totally blown away. Since I normally wear down my already flat pillows, they always end up feeling old and lifeless; this pillow gave me a fluffy, soft, and supportive feeling I had never really experienced before. Not only did it give me the best night's sleep I've had in a while, but I could also give the thicker insert (which just feels like an actual pillow) to my boyfriend, and he loves it. Win-win.
Have a king-size bed? No problem; it also comes in this larger option ($78). Plus, you can even clean it in the washing machine, making it a long-lasting pick. It's time to stop sleeping on that pillow you hate and treat yourself to this one. It's available on Prime and will be delivered within just two days.

Date Night! Jennifer Garner and New Boyfriend John Miller Step Out Together For a Show
Jennifer Garner is hitting the town with her new man! On Friday night, the actress and her boyfriend John Miller were spotted attending a performance of the musical Dear Evan Hansen at the Ahmanson Theatre in LA. Though the couple arrived together, they reportedly went into the theater separately, with Jen going in first and John following a few minutes later. The two appeared to be in good spirits as they sat in the back of the car together following the performance.
The pair's relationship was first reported last month, after Jennifer finalized her divorce from Ben Affleck, but the date night marks their first public outing together. According to Us Weekly, Jennifer has been dating the businessman for more than six months and "it's getting pretty serious." "Jen brings out the best in John, and he is the happiest he has probably ever been," another source tells the publication. "It's a loving, healthy relationship." We're so happy that Jen is happy!
Why Evanna Lynch and Keo Motsepe Make Such a Magical Team on Dancing With the Stars
Evanna Lynch is known by Harry Potter fans as Luna Lovegood, but she's so much more than that. On Dancing With the Stars this season, the Irish actress has been showing a whole new side of herself through dance, and fans are completely spellbound. While there have been plenty of magical performances throughout this season, what people have really come to love is her incredible partnership with Keo Motsepe.
The 28-year-old dancer first joined the show's cast during season 19, but he has really shined during season 27. This season marks the first time Motsepe has made it to the semi-finals, which is in no doubt due to how well he works with Lynch. It's clear the two make a great team, and fans are already rooting for them to make it to the final three (myself included). Ahead of the semi-finals, I had a chance to talk with the pair about everything from their favorite dances to who they would love to compete against for the Mirror Ball Trophy. See what they had to say ahead!
POPSUGAR: Evanna, when you first signed on to Dancing With the Stars, did you seek any advice from past competitors or did Keo give you any advice when you first started?
Evanna Lynch: Oh man, I didn't have any time to reach out to anyone else because I signed on a few days before it started. So, I didn't really get advice [from past competitors], but Keo's first words of advice to me was to just be myself. He said don't try and do the moves the same way other people do it or the same way that he was doing it, like I would have to find my own way to move, and that's something that he's still reminding me. The one thing I also remembered - because I did theater a good lot the past year - and the main piece of advice I was given was to get loads of sleep, and that has proved to be important for this one as well.
PS: I've really loved watching all of your performances together this season. It seems like you two work really great together. What has been your favorite dance so far?
Keo Motsepe: My favorite would be the samba. I think because samba is usually the hard dance with celebrities and with Evanna, every time she's in the studio, she wants to know everything, like tons of technique and how to do things. She's invested in everything and giving her all. I got to the point during the week, I was like, "That's a lot of information. I don't think she can handle that." And then she came on stage and did that, I was like, "Wow! That's my best samba on the show."
EL: I enjoyed the tango. With the intention that I had that week and the choreography Keo had, it just all fit together so well. I think at that point, I was just feeling a bit of frustration like I wanted to prove people wrong, I wanted us to get ahead of the competition, or just ahead of ourselves with what we had previously done. I just went in there with rage/frustration and the dance really gave me a space to express that. And [I enjoyed] the whole thing with being my cat self. I don't usually get to express that either and I fully enjoyed it.
PS: What has been the most rewarding part of this season for each of you?
KM: So many things. For me personally, it's just Evanna's growth. As a teacher and a coach and as Evanna's friend now, you invest everything that you have into someone and you're investing everything that I know and that I teach: the choreography, every moment, and our chemistry. I think our partnership and the growth of Evanna, that's the most rewarding.
EL: For me, it's [having Keo] as a partner because he is so talented and so hard-working and committed and also so creative. The fact that every week he's amazed in me and he thinks that I can do more. I'll be like, "Ugh, I want to be pushed." That's what I said in the first week, I was like, "I just really want to be pushed. I want it to hurt. I want it to feel like I'm growing," and Keo never backed away from that. Having somebody that's that talented and that hard-working to believe in me has really made me believe in myself and it gave me permission to go to places that I haven't gone before and express things I haven't expressed before.
PS: For you Keo, is there a specific moment you are especially proud of Evanna for?
KM: Yes, it's the week after the jazz number, we had a heart-to-heart. We were talking about the jazz number and how she wanted to get high scores and I remember asking the question, "OK, so what are you going to do about it? What are you going to change?" And she goes, "No! I am done pleasing other people, making the judges like me, or this and this. I'm going to do this thing for myself!" I know it's a small thing, but for me that was a breakthrough that Evanna realized she has to do this show for herself. This is her journey. She needs to leave this competition like, "I enjoyed that. That was super fun."
PS: It's been really great watching the two of your work together on the show and grow in your dancing. Why do you think you make such a great team?
KM: She's so open and we just get along. The first time we opened the door, we just clicked and our chemistry just grew. That's what this show does. I was looking at every season, like when me and my partner go home in week two or whatever, and I look at people that grow and I'm like, "Wow, they've become so close. Why is that?" And now, I'm in this position, and this is my first semi-final on the show, and I'm like, "Wow, yeah." You spend so much time with your partner in the studio.
PS: As we are getting closer to the end of the competition, who would you love to see in the final three, in addition to yourselves?
KM: Everyone just brings something different to this season. With these six, everyone is so different and you never know what the audience likes. It's up the audience and we just got to come out hard every Monday and just give everything that we have.
EL: I definitely want to be in the finale with Milo [Manheim] and Witney [Carson]. I love their partnership and I admire their choreography. They just have so much fun together. And then I think Juan Pablo [Di Pace] is such an amazing dancer that they [Juan and Cheryl Burke] definitely deserve to be there. Those would be two that if they're not in the finale, I'd be like "What?" But I admire everyone. I admire everyone's partnership.

17 Revelations About Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Straight From the Set
When the onscreen Harry Potter franchise ended its illustrious run in 2011, many fans of J.K. Rowling's story went into immediate mourning; sure we all still have the books to keep us company, but seeing that marvelous, magical world up on the big screen every few years brought with it a special kind of joy. That's what made the hype around the 2016 film adaptation of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them simultaneously so strong and also a little hesitant - could it live up to its predecessors? As you hopefully know by now, it does . . . and then some.
Now we find ourselves just a few short weeks away from the premiere of its sequel, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. So far, the second film has been mired in a bit of controversy, courtesy of star Johnny Depp, who plays titular villain Gellert Grindelwald. But when I visited the sequel's set outside of London late last year, spirits were high, for good reason: the cast and crew were in the midst of creating some serious magic. The second movie in the five-part series aims to be even more dazzling than the first, which was confirmed to me repeatedly by stars like Eddie Redmayne, Ezra Miller, and Callum Turner, as well as director David Yates.

Thanks to Jimmy Kimmel, Ex Sarah Silverman's Walk of Fame Ceremony Turned Into a Sweet, Hilarious Roast
You would think that having your ex show up at an event you're being honored at would be awkward, right? Well, not for Sarah Silverman. On Friday, the comedian received the 2,649th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and her ex Jimmy Kimmel popped up to show his support. The two happily posed for pictures with Sarah's commemorative plaque and star, and Jimmy even took the stage for a speech.
Jimmy discussed the first time he met Sarah at the Hugh Hefner Friars Club Roast in 2001, saying she called him "fat" with "no charisma." His speech then turned into a hilarious roast as Jimmy went on to make fun of her fashion choices and her getting fired from Saturday Night Live. "Sarah and I dated for seven years with a brief break in the middle . . . after we parted ways, I stopped following Sarah's career, but I heard it went - is going very well." Ouch! Things then took a sweet turn when Jimmy praised Sarah and said she ranks above the great comedians and is "a vastly underrated and excellent actress." John C. Reilly and Sarah's sisters, Laura and Susan, were also in attendance.
Sarah and Jimmy dated on and off from 2002 to 2009. Even though things didn't work out romantically, the two have remained friends. In fact, Sarah stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live in September and gave Jimmy a quick update on her love life following her split from Michael Sheen last year. Jimmy, on the other hand, is now married to producer and writer Molly McNearney, and they have two kids together.
