The 4 Important Things to Know About Your Metabolism If You Want to Change Your Body

Chances are you've heard the word metabolism come up in conversations around health and fitness; heck, you've probably even used it yourself. But what does it really mean? We're not trying to get all deep on you, but when it comes to your health, understanding how your body works is important. In order to provide you with an accurate definition of what metabolism is, how it works, and if you can actually boost it or not, POPSUGAR spoke with Avigdor Arad, PhD, RDN, CDE, director of the Mount Sinai Physiolab.

What Is Metabolism?

Metabolism has been getting a lot of buzz lately, but it's important to actually understand what it is. In short: "Metabolism relates to the ability to produce energy from fat, from sugar, from protein, and also to store energy," Dr. Arad told POPSUGAR. And when you hear people talking about their metabolic rate, they're talking about the number of calories they burn in a unit of time, he said.

How Your Metabolism Works

Now that we've cleared up what your metabolism is, it's important to know how it works. In its most simplistic form, metabolism is the process of your body "taking stored energy that is in food and liquid and transforming it to usable energy or stored energy in the body," Dr. Arad said. This means that every time you eat something - a slice of pizza, a smoothie, your favorite snack - your body turns that food and liquid into energy, and then that energy will either be used right away or stored.

If your body uses the energy in the short-term, it's turned into sugar and phosphocreatine - the energy that allows ATP (the immediate source of energy for exercise) to resynthesize - and is used as an immediate source of energy. If it isn't used immediately, it becomes stored for the long-term in the form of fat, Dr. Arad explained.

What It Actually Means to Have a Fast or Slow Metabolism

Another important thing you should know about metabolism is the rate at which the body produces energy from fat, sugar, and protein will vary from person to person. "Usually, when people are talking about metabolism, they're talking about how well they produce energy. The more energy you produce, the higher (or faster) your metabolism, and the less energy you produce, the slower your metabolism is," he said.

To determine whether you have a fast or slow metabolism, you should consider getting a resting metabolic test (typically $250, but rates will vary) via specialized clinics such as Fitnescity.

How to Boost Your Metabolism

We've got the basics of metabolism covered, and now it's time to answer the million-dollar question: can you boost your metabolism? Yes, it's actually possible to boost your metabolism, but adding hot sauce to everything won't work. According to Dr. Arad, you can boost your metabolism by eating more healthy fats and protein, consuming less sugar, and incorporating more strength training into your workout routine (here's a four-week beginner's plan).

Winter Weather Sucks, So Relax and Rejuvenate With These 5 Self-Care Tips From a Spa Director

It's time to put those beloved sandals away and break out the wool sweaters; Winter is on the way. It's hard not to get into a funk when you wake up to complete darkness and trudge through blustering temps just to get to your car.

Although you probably just want to bury yourself under a blanket this time of year and not move, self-care is more important than ever. Not only will the rituals of putting yourself first - even if it's just for a few minutes a day - help you de-stress, but it can also boost your mood.

I spoke with Majka Kendall, the spa director at Chatham Bars Inn Resort and Spa in Cape Cod, where I got to experience the relaxing spa firsthand as part of a press trip. After a full-body scrub, I felt totally rejuvenated despite the cold and rainy temps outside. At night, I got to use the giant soaking tub inside a spa suite, which helped me unwind and ease into a restful sleep.

Since a spa getaway isn't feasible for everyone, especially during the busy holiday season, Majka shared some self-care tips you can do right at home to combat the Winter blues. Although these tips may help reinvigorate you, if you truly suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD), be sure to visit a healthcare provider who can help you find a course of treatment that works for you.

Confused About WW's FitPoints? We Were Too - Until Now

You know every food on WW (formerly Weight Watchers) has a numerical value and the program gives you a daily SmartPoints budget for everything you eat, but did you know you can also rack up FitPoints to expand that budget? Each physical activity you do is assigned a points value, just like food. Depending on how hard you work out and for how long, you can accrue FitPoints, which increase your daily WW budget and, yes, allow you to eat a little more. There are a few caveats, though.

If I Work Out and Get FitPoints, Can I Eat More?

If you want to use your FitPoints to be able to eat more (aka working out so you can indulge a little), you have to meet WW's threshold for swapping your points. You have to earn three to four FitPoints a day (which WW says is about 3,000 daily steps) to be able to turn your FitPoints into SmartPoints.

You can also choose the order in which your SmartPoints are used. Remember: you have daily SmartPoints, weekly SmartPoints, and FitPoints. Your daily SmartPoints are always the first points you use in a day. You can then choose whether you want your FitPoints to come next or your weekly SmartPoints. It probably doesn't matter much, but you can play around with the order to see if one particular way suits your wellness journey better.

What Else Can I Do With FitPoints?

You can opt to have your FitPoints not affect your SmartPoints at all. Personally, I don't turn my FitPoints into food points because it tricks me into thinking I can eat more than I should, so I'm better off sticking with only my daily and weekly SmartPoints. But in case you think your FitPoints don't matter, keep in mind that with WW's newest program, WellnessWins, you earn five wins each day you track activity, which you can then use to purchase prizes.

How Can I Track My FitPoints?

This might all sound incredibly confusing, so let's look at a real example. My daily SmartPoints budget is 25. I get 42 weekly SmartPoints. I set my account to dip into my FitPoints first before my weekly points, then did a 45-minute high-intensity Spin class, which counts for 17 FitPoints.

I ate 27 SmartPoints today, which is two over my daily limit. Those two SmartPoints are pulled from the 17 FitPoints I earned today, so now I have 15 FitPoints left to last me the rest of the week until my next weigh-in. If I don't earn any more FitPoints but go over my daily SmartPoints by more than 15, I'll burn through all my FitPoints and start to burn through my 42 weekly SmartPoints.

If you want to see how your account is currently set up, it's in your app, under Food Settings. There's a Swapping option that you can adjust to any of the three options (no swapping, swap for weekly SmartPoints before FitPoints, or swap for FitPoints before weekly SmartPoints).

In the end, here's what you absolutely need to know: Exercise is great and you should do it and track it on your WW app. If you feel like you're working out hard enough that you need to be eating more for fuel, set your account to make your FitPoints available for food. If you feel like that's not going to help you with your weight-loss goals, rack up those FitPoints for WellnessWins and feel good about all the exercise you're doing.

If You're Struggling With Body Image, You Need to Read Lili Reinhart's Latest Speech

Lili Reinhart is no stranger to opening up about her struggles with body image and mental health, but her latest quotes about the subject matter just might be her most powerful yet. On Nov. 11, the Riverdale actress gave an empowering speech at Glamour's 2018 Women of the Year Summit, and it was jam-packed with reminders about the importance of self-love. "We exist in a world today where everything can be faked or fixed," Lili said while beginning her speech. "Noses can be changed, and stomachs can be tightened, and cellulite can be lasered away, apparently. Because that's what we are told to do, which is alter ourselves in order to be beautiful."

"I didn't think anything was wrong with my body until I was in an industry that rewards and praises people for having a smaller waist than I will ever have."

The 22-year-old star admitted that for the past year, she's dealt with backlash from people who claimed she "didn't have the right" to discuss being self-conscious about her body because she was thin. "I understand how it seems inappropriate for someone who is average size to talk about problems with weight gain. But, my point is, I didn't think anything was wrong with my body until I was in an industry that rewards and praises people for having a smaller waist than I will ever have," Lili said.

The result of these unrealistic industry standards? Lili became "hyper-aware" of her body's fluctuations, often examining herself in the mirror and feeling wary when her stomach looked different just hours apart. "I was thinking, was my reflection lying to me? How can my body look so different over the course of one day and why do I feel like I need to apologize to the world for my ever-changing self?" she said, adding that she didn't want her fans to think that she was "catfishing" them with her appearance.

"We aren't born with these insecurities. We are told to be insecure about certain things."

Lili then cast light on how the media tends to cause women's insecurities by portraying what they should and shouldn't look like. "From a young age, we are unknowingly being trained by magazines, marketing, and all forms of media into thinking that having cellulite or not wearing makeup is worthy of being publicly shamed," the actress said. "So there was no way in hell that as young women digesting this media, we weren't all going to try and hide those parts of ourselves from then on. We aren't born with these insecurities. We are told to be insecure about certain things. We are conditioned to feel ashamed or embarrassed about certain parts of ourselves." Ain't that the truth!

The solution to said body shaming isn't an easy one to come upon, Lili said, but she did add that "changing it ourselves" is possible if people vow to show "what's real with no filter and certainly no shame." She encouraged the women in the crowd to present both their "natural, vulnerable side" and their "glamorous, contoured side" on social media, striking a balance between the two to keep things more real.

Lili wrapped up her speech with some particularly empowering words that deserve their own damn billboard, or, at the very least, their own sticky note on your bedside table. "Do not set impossible goals of meeting those fake standards. It's unrealistic to think that your body or my body will ever look like anyone else's. That's not the way it's supposed to be," she said. "You can be naturally beautiful with acne or scars, cellulite or curves. So let's celebrate each other, and ourselves, as we are, as we will be, and as we were meant to be." Watch Lili's eight-minute speech below, and prepare to feel inspired.

Trader Joe's Now Has Cocoa Peppermint Creamer, and Yep, It's Vegan-Approved!

As the holiday season approaches, pumpkin spice gives way to peppermint-flavored everything. Nowhere is this more apparent than at Trader Joe's, which unveils tasty chocolate-peppermint treats such as Candy Cane Joe Joe's, peppermint ice cream cones, and chocolate peppermint almond beverage come Winter.

But why wait until dessert to enjoy the sweet taste of chocolate and peppermint together? Luckily, Trader Joe's understands our need for the flavors all day long and released a cocoa-peppermint-flavored coffee creamer just in time for the holiday season so we can enjoy it first thing in the morning. The best part? This creamer is dairy-free, meaning it's perfect for vegans and dairy-sensitive folks.

This coffee creamer sells for $2, and although the nutrition information isn't available, @traderjoesvegan on Instagram wrote, "I feel like the sweetness and creaminess is just right." If you want to enjoy the sweet taste of chocolate and peppermint with your coffee without splurging on a coffee shop peppermint mocha latte (which likely has dozens of grams of sugar), then pick up a carton of this on your next TJ's run.

A Trainer Says to Start Doing These 10 Exercises If You Want to Build Your Glute Muscles

When it comes to getting a bigger butt, doing a set of squats here and there just won't cut it. You're going to need to change your training plan to incorporate more strength training and booty-specific exercises. To get you started, Instagram influencer and trainer Bret Contreras, PhD, CSCS, came up with a list of the best exercises to build your glutes.

Because everyone has a different hip anatomy and glute architecture, Bret explained, "What works well for one person doesn't necessarily work for the other." If you haven't seen a change in your glutes with squats, don't give up - just experiment with another exercise.

Bret trains hundreds of clients a month with the goal of growing their glutes and said the following exercises will work best for most. When going through the exercises, Bret said, "think more about the movement patterns they represent," which will give you more of a variety with each exercise. For example, you can do glute bridges with just your bodyweight, with a resistance band around your knees, or with a dumbbell.

Now, it's time to start building that booty. Check out the exercises below and begin to incorporate them into your strength routine.

Step Aside, Squats: This Move Will Lift Your Butt to New Heights

If you want to work your butt and the thought of doing another squat makes you want to cry, this variation of bridge will give your glutes the workout you're looking for. It's concentrated goodness for your backside. And even though you're on the floor, it's a full-body exercise. Your glutes power the motion, but your core and arms are certainly working too.

Advanced Single Leg Bridge

  • Start seated, with your hands about a foot from your butt and your fingers pointed away from you. Your feet should be about 18 inches from your butt, with your right heel pressed in to the mat and your left foot hovering just off the mat.
  • Press your right heel into the floor to activate your glutes as you lift into a tabletop position, and straighten your left leg keeping your thighs parallel. Resist the urge to throw your head back as you do this. Do not lock your elbows, either.
  • Slowly lower your butt to the floor, returning to the start position. This completes one rep.
  • Do two to three sets of 10 to 12 reps on each leg.

Need a modification? Try this variation of the single leg bridge with your back on the mat.

The Secret to Making a Fitness Resolution You Can Stick to Is Actually Really Obvious

Chances are you've made losing weight or getting healthy your New Year's resolution - or part of it - at least one time in your life. And if you're like the majority of Americans, you start out strong on that goal, but by February, the steam is running out. You're not alone: 80 percent of Americans fail by February, and by March it's like, "What resolution?"

I've suffered that fate many times, but I still love the idea of making a New Year's resolution, and I'm determined to get it right in practice. That's why this year I'm focusing on making it for the long haul.

Typically, in the past, I have made a superficial resolution, like losing 10 pounds. To do that I've gone on sugar detoxes, smoothie cleanses, and Paleo diets to no avail. While I've had some short-term success, it has rarely carried over into a sustainable habit, and rarely have I reached my goal of 10 pounds. This year, though, will be different, because I've discovered the secret that I think will work for me.

Set the Bar Low

This year I'm not focusing on the quick fix to drop the extra holiday weight, but that's not to say I don't have high expectations for myself. Nutritionist Veronica Cardon agrees and advises that to be successful, start with short-term goals, spread out.

"Don't start with an overly ambitious goal such as 'I will lose 20 pounds in three months.' It's better to set up small-step objectives that make the milestones achievable and realistic, such as 'I will lose two pounds a month,'" Cardon says.

In order to achieve those goals, I'm starting by mapping out specific things I'll do each month. In January, I'm starting with giving up the creamer in my coffee and committing to making it to the gym three times a week.

Health coach Marcey Rader suggests mini habits throughout the year in order to create lasting habits that will help you achieve your resolution.

"In January, I'll increase my meditation by two minutes per day, and in February, I'll only get sugar in my coffee on weekends," Rader says. "In March, I'll stretch every day or do five Sun Salutations as an end to my workday and transition to personal time."

Rader also says this helps to keep us from feeling like we failed when we don't see immediate results or face a setback.

"It also helps to know it's only for a short time (30 days), which by then may have become a habit," Rader says. "If the habit doesn't work out, because maybe it's not as beneficial as we thought, we gave it the 30-day college try and can move on."

To keep yourself accountable, it's also a good idea to set reminders to stay on track. It's easy to get distracted and forget your goals, which is where you can use technology to your advantage. I'm starting by setting daily reminders for myself on my cell phone and planning my workout schedule ahead of time. I notice when I see the reminder, I'm more likely to feel compelled to stick to it. I'm also going to journal at the end of every week, tracking my progress (or lack thereof).

Here's to another year of setting resolutions . . . and this year, sticking to them!

I Resolved to Be Healthier and Happier in 2018, and I'm Still Going Strong - Here's How

I remember exactly how driven I was to invest in myself heading into the New Year. It wasn't that I was exceptionally lost, rather I simply hadn't been focusing enough on the things that would improve my well-being from the inside out. I was working too much, eating in ways that didn't fuel my body, and neglecting to nourish my soul, and I had fallen out of my once-religious cycle of working out consistently.

It was a culmination of acknowledging all these things that truly motivated me. And while I find the tradition of New Year's resolutions a little silly (you can make a change anytime), I did use the year shift as my turning point. Here's how I reshaped my life in just 12 months.

My Greasy Forehead Is No Match For This Brilliant Setting Powder

I'm a runner, and I don't just mean in the fitness sense of the word. I shamelessly run after public transportation. (There is no subway, bus, or cab I will not catch if I put my mind to it.) As a result, I can get a little sweaty before making it to my final destination, so I keep my bag stocked with face wipes, deodorant, and basically anything else I need to hide the evidence of my crazy commute. The problem I often face is when I'm already wearing makeup; it'll often smudge because of my super oily T-zone.

This is where the Wander Beauty Play All Day Translucent Powder ($32) changed my life. On the outside, it just looks like a (delightfully rose-colored) pressed powder compact, but flip it open, and you'll find a puff applicator. The puff is nothing huge - think: a practical-sized pancake - but it's packed with translucent powder inside. Brilliant. Now, it's something I bring with me while traveling, because whether you're on a train or running around the office trying to find a free conference room to take a phone call, this puff is there save you without making a mess. If you need to blot the oil or set your makeup, you no longer need a pot of loose powder that requires a fluffy brush and will get everywhere.

Today, in particular, was a sweaty day, and everything about my commute needed deslicking. I couldn't find my metro card, and when I did, I sprinted after a train that I knew was destined to leave without me on it. My forehead was looking a little greasy, so I whipped out this compact. I patted it across my cheeks, which are often very patchy and dry, and the powder didn't sit in my creases. Then, I gave my T-zone a good few whacks, soaking up any excess oils. It not once ruined my base makeup (which at the time was only BB cream), but it did set it for the rest of the day.

What's also magical about this compact is its ability to disappear. Tested on fair, medium, and deep skin tones, and seeing it disappear on even the most textured areas of my skin, is truly incredible. So Wander Beauty: thank you for making my skin look fresh - and even the most Monday-est Monday better.

A Week in the Life of Everyone's Favorite Pimple Popper

It's basic beauty math: 50 million acne sufferers plus one brilliant dermatologist plus hundreds of explosive, can't-help-but-watch excavation videos equals Dr. Pimple Popper, an internet phenomenon with a whopping 4.5 million YouTube subscribers. Add in a hit TV series, two kids, and a skincare line called SLMD, and you're looking at the life of Dr. Sandra Lee, MD - who, as you might imagine, is busy as hell.

"I feel like I have four jobs: a full-time, practicing board-certified dermatologist with a private practice I share with my husband, wife and mom to teenage kids, YouTuber and social media personality, and now host of my own TV show on TLC," she told POPSUGAR. "I live day-by-day, and I can't look too far ahead because there are too many things going on."

It's easy to understand why when you see the breakdown of her schedule by the hour, ahead. Not that the hustle is a bad thing: "Being busy makes me feel happy and fulfilled," Dr. Lee said. "But if I go all Michelle Phan on you, you can find me in Switzerland." (Put down your extraction tools, Popaholics. That was a joke.)

This Dessert-Inspired Body-Care Line Doubles Down on Salted Caramel

The early 2000s were a simpler time, when we watched Jessica Simpson figure out if tuna was chicken or fish. In addition to her Newlyweds shenanigans alongside Nick Lachey, the stunning blonde had a cosmetics line at Sephora called Dessert Beauty. Each scent was sugary, sweet, and over the top, and we've been grieving the loss of the brand until now.

Body-care brand Being by Sanctuary Spa has spunky, fun packaging and the same sugary-sweet scents Simpson's line was famous for. One product in particular, the Salted Caramel & Macadamia Bath Bomb, smells exactly like our preteen favorite. The scent can be found in a ton of different products from the company, all available at Ulta. Check them all out ahead.

Mugler Created the Easiest Way to Travel With Fragrance (So Back Off, TSA)

The new Mugler Perfuming Pens in Alien ($24), Aura ($24), and Angel ($24) are genius. They enable overpackers like me the luxury of having a stash of our sexy fragrances to last us through an entire vacation.

The impulse to pack all of my makeup, hair, and skincare products, along with my entire wardrobe, is strong. For my last vacation to Japan, someone working at the airport I was passing through was eyeing one of my cosmetic cases. To say I panicked was an understatement, as I could have sworn that one of my favorite perfumes was in danger of being confiscated. Luckily, it made it through in the clear.

Mugler eliminates that panic with these pens, which come in three scents: Alien (which smells earthy with jasmine, wood, and amber notes), Aura (a blend of sweet vanilla and various woody and floral notes), and Angel (which smells sweet with notes of vanilla and honey). To use them, just uncap, swipe, and take a whiff of the warm, sexy goodness you just unleashed. You only really need one or two swipes per area, as the scent of each sweep is very potent.

So how does Mugler encapsulate its signature scents into these crayons? It's not like typical solid perfumes. Cosmetic chemist Ginger King explained that it is actually the same technology you find in those trendy transparent lipsticks that suspend flowers. "It's made with amid, silica, and a copolymer that seals in the fragrance," she said.

So a huge thanks to Mugler for freeing up space in my suitcase and also getting TSA off my back.

Can This Hyaluronic Acid Perfume Replace 1 of Your Skincare Steps?

"Moisturizing" and "fragrance" are two words that rarely go together, if ever. But the Ellis Brooklyn Myth Hydraparfum ($70) made it happen with its alcohol-free perfume oil that the brand promises will also hydrate your skin.

I'll admit, I thought it was a hoax at first. When I pressed down on the perfume's spray pump, I was surprised to see it dispense a serum-like liquid onto my wrist. It was milky in color and thick enough that it didn't drip or move around on my skin - it just sat there until I rubbed it in. It took a little over 20 seconds before it completely absorbed, but when it did, the surface of my skin felt soft and supple and smelled like freshly cut flowers and crisp citrus.

How can you have a perfume that also moisturizes skin? "It contains the salt of hyaluronic acid, making it hydrating," said cosmetic chemist Ginger King, adding that the oil's chemical makeup is similar to that of a fragranced serum. "Though, the fact that it is alcohol-free may make the fragrance smell stronger and cause it to last longer. Alcohol typically causes scents to evaporate faster."

If you apply a hyaluronic-acid-spiked product to your body, dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, says that, in theory, this fragrance could replace that skincare step. "It contains hydrating hyaluronic acid and vitamin E, so if the product provides you with enough hydration, then it can take the place of your traditional hyaluronic acid serum," he said. Still, we wouldn't recommend you use it on your face because of how strong the perfume is. "The fragrances, even though they are natural, can still cause skin irritation if you have sensitive skin," said Zeichner. "I would not apply this product and go out in the sun, as bergamot is associated with a reaction known as phyto-photodermatitis."

Even if it's not a true replacement to your body lotion, it can't hurt that something you can quickly spritz on your wrists can also leave your skin silky soft. A fragrance that moisturizes and makes me smell amazing? I'll take 20.

Patrick Starrr's Final Collection With MAC Cosmetics Is Just What You Need For the Holidays

Patrick Starrr is releasing his final collection with MAC Cosmetics, and he's here to take you on the ultimate slay ride. The 16-piece collection will include three matte lip shades (neutral beige, pink, and red), five glittery lip glosses (in gold, brown, peach gold, red, and purple red), two eye shadow palettes (with six shades inside), three loose pigment pots (in peach gold, bronze, and coral), one highlighter (a reflective gold with flecks of sparkle), and his previously released Patrick Powder (a translucent mattifying powder). The names of each shade (like Hot Coco Bish and Shady Santa) were thought up by Starrr himself.

The collection will be Starrr's fifth release with MAC Cosmetics. "It celebrates style, fashion, and beauty in one, and allows you to play with texture," he told POPSUGAR. "You might want your signature red lip and bronze shadow for the holidays - I get that - so if you don't want to play with color, you can play with texture. Throw on some Dazzleglass and pigment to spruce up those looks."

With this collection, he said, "fashion and function were most important. Being a man in makeup, function is so important because the skin texture of men can be more porous and textured. I wanted a powder that was so micronized, had the right color, and gave a beautiful finish all at the same time. Also, having come from being a YouTuber and filming in HD, I wanted something that wasn't too heavy and would make makeup look cakey."

Keep reading for a preview of the entire collection before it's available on counters and MAC's website on Dec. 3.

I Wore Nothing but Huda Beauty's New Concealer to See How Much It Covers

After Huda Beauty's foundation was able to completely cover my hives during an epic allergic reaction last year, I was eager to try the brand's new concealer. The Overachiever High Coverage Concealer ($30) comes in 20 shades and contains 31 percent pigment, meaning it's very opaque. It's also fortified with green tea to erase signs of stress and aging and includes a cooling metal tip. Huda Beauty created the concealer to be multitasking, so you can hide acne, hyperpigmentation, under-eye circles, and redness with just one product.

Even when just running to Starbucks, I normally like to wear a medium- to full-coverage foundation to feel my best. However, I decided to skip foundation altogether to test out this new launch. If the brand could be trusted to cover hives, I was confident the concealer would be enough to cover my zits and under-eye circles. After using a Beautyblender ($20) to dot and blend the product under my eyes, on my chin, around my nose, and anywhere else I encountered discoloration, I was surprisingly happy with the results. While I felt the need to add a little bit of salmon-colored corrector under my eyes to get rid of the blue tone of my under-eye circles, my face looked pretty good.

I would highly suggest you try out the formula, especially if you prefer to go without foundation, because this concealer really will do the complexion-perfecting job well.

Facials are an incredible add-on that can take your skincare routine up a notch. From microdermabrasion and acid peels to acupuncture and oxygen, there are so many options to choose from. Still, even if you're committed to upping your skincare game with regular facials and have the means to visit an expert, you might not know how many you need to get results. We sought out celebrity facialist Michaella Bolder to help answer the question.

"Facial appointments depend on the treatment itself and how far they need to be spaced out," Bolder said. That means active ingredients may require downtime, while other treatments may need to be bulked together for best results. For example, if someone is getting a targeted acne laser treatment, they may need to book one facial a week for multiple weeks, whereas if you're doing it for maintenance, every few months might be adequate for results. In general, Bolder suggests to aim for a facial appointment every four weeks while taking care of your skin at home in the meantime.

If you are unable or don't want to go for a professional facial, there are steps you can take at home to maximize results. Bolder recommends "an exfoliating stage and a mask application twice a week." Our favorites include Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment ($85) and Garnier Moisture Bomb Sakura Hydrating Face Sheet Mask ($3). Bolder also stresses that sticking to a daily skincare routine, morning and night, is essential to maintaining skin health.

The Makeup Sponge That Gave Me Instagram-Filtered Skin

I never thought I'd describe a makeup sponge as "pretty," but with the luxurious, velvet-like surface and powder-blue hue of the Juno & Co.'s Microfiber Velvet Sponge ($6), that was the first word that came to mind. The thought was followed with phrases like "Cool!" and "Does this even work?" To answer the latter: yes. It uses a microfiber surface and something called hydrophilic polyurethane (a fancy way of saying water-loving foam) to create an even complexion that looks as soft as the Juno feels. Just like velvet, its blue hue appears darker or lighter depending on how you look at it.

I decided to test it after a weeklong, stress-induced breakout. I didn't have many, but the few acne scars I was left with were very new and deeply pigmented. I dabbed on the same concealer that I use every day (Kylie Cosmetics Concealer) before tapping with my water-soaked sponge. The first thing I noticed was how soft and gentle it was on some of the sensitive spots on my face. "Its microfiber design makes it less abrasive on the face. It's made for sensitive skin," celebrity makeup artist Stephanie Flor said.

Then I noticed its seamless application - it was never streaky, and with just a few taps and short, small sweeps, I had a smooth complexion. It was also amazing that my most darkened, textured scars were hidden with just one layer of concealer I'd smoothed out with this sponge (typically, I use a few layers of the same concealer to hide a newer scar). My skin looked like I had just put on that "pretty filter" on Instagram - even in tone and texture. It was amazing, considering the tired-looking canvas I was working with.

Juno & Co.'s Microfiber Velvet Sponge is available now on the brand's website and here to bring your makeup dreams to life. No filter necessary.

Mandy Moore Talks Plastic Surgery Rumors: "People Think Everyone in Hollywood Has Had Work Done"

Unlike the bubblegum pink lip gloss in her inaugural hit "Candy," Mandy Moore doesn't really do "extreme." In fact, unless it's crying behind the scenes of her hit TV show This Is Us, the pendulum in her everyday life tends to swing in the complete opposite direction.

"I pinched that in the bud at a fairly young age," the singer-slash-actress-slash-Garnier ambassador told POPSUGAR. "I've always embraced this easy, breezy philosophy: I get sleep, I wash my face every night, and I don't drink too much, unless it's water."

It almost seems as though, in the span of her nearly 20-year career, Moore has managed to unlock the secret to happiness in Hollywood - and it looks a lot like true love, meaningful brand partnerships, and an unfaltering commitment to being your truest, most authentic self. Read it in her own words, ahead.

I Wore Fake Bangs All Day, and This Is What Happened

The last time I had bangs, I was 5 years old, and it was frankly not my decision. As long as I've been able to, I've avoided getting the somewhat high-maintenance hairstyle, but lately, I'd started to wonder: how would I look if I did take the plunge?

Luckily, I discovered that hair-extension brand Hairdo creates human-hair clip-in bangs so I could see exactly what I would look like with the fringe. I had them send me a pair so I could test them out in the office and see what my coworkers thought. When I walked into work, I immediately grabbed the bangs and a pair of scissors to do what every hairstylist has always advised me against: trim them myself. The instructional video online told me to do it, so I decided it would be OK.

After some decidedly blunt chops, the bangs looked more or less the correct length, and I secured them to my head by placing the clips at the midpoint on the top of my head and secured them by snapping them into place with my natural hair. I tousled it a little bit with my hands, trying to get my natural strands to blend with the short fake pieces on either side of my head. I kind of felt like I had a small animal living on top of my head, but I began my day.

In the hours that followed, an increasing number of my coworkers did double takes as we said hello in the kitchen. A few people even told me they loved how it looked, completely unaware they were fake. A majority of my coworkers, however, kind of stared at me confused, trying to discern if I really had chopped my hair. At the end of the day, we had a team-wide editorial meeting where I was outed for my fake fringe. A room of 25 people all wanted to know how it looked so real and were impressed by how closely it matched my natural color.

When I was finally able to take off the bangs at the end of the day, I was relieved. I'm not used to having hair constantly touch my forehead, and the clips were starting to give me a headache. Although I like switching up my look, and many people have since encouraged me to cut bangs on my real head of hair, I've decided I might just stick to the fake ones for now. While I don't think they're completely convincing, I definitely fooled a few friends. Check out the before and after ahead.

I Tried This Celebrity-Favorite $175 Face Cream, and This Is What Happened

In my three years as a beauty editor, I've gotten the opportunity to try hundreds of beauty products, but one always seemed to evade me: the La Mer Crème de la Mer. Legend has it that Barbra Streisand herself has used the $175 (for a single ounce) cream from head to toe, and anything that's good enough for the Funny Girl is good enough for me. When I researched the product, I noticed it even earned a Sephora Community Approved seal for its glowing recommendations from customers. So when I finally got a sample from an event, I was ecstatic for the opportunity to glow like Ms. Streisand herself.

With the sudden fluctuation in temperature (why is it 70 degrees in New York City in November?), my skin has been irritated, dry, and breaking out in spots I was unaware had oil glands. Considering how fancy-shmancy this cream is, I was truly hoping it would turn me from a sleep-deprived troll into a fresh-faced human.

The Crème de la Mer ($175) uses "Miracle Broth," the brand's proprietary blend of marine ingredients that promises to renew cells with the power of fermentation, and lime tea, a powerful antioxidant that protects against stress and pollution (two things I'm very familiar with). The brand touts that it smooths fine lines, plumps the skin, and soothes irritation, making it one hell of a good moisturizer.

After a month of using it, I'm happy to report that my skin no longer looks scaly like a fish, but more like that of a mermaid (probably thanks to the marine ingredients). I love how hydrating it feels each night as I slather it all over my face and neck in my fluffy robe, pretending that I am Elizabeth Taylor rather than an overcaffeinated millennial. Is the cream absurdly expensive? Yes. Do we all deserve to treat ourselves? Double yes. If you want something luxurious, La Mer is the way to go.

Victoria Beckham, Icon, Got a Haircut on Her Way to the People's Choice Awards

It's no secret that Victoria Beckham doesn't follow the trends, she makes them, and apparently the same goes when getting red carpet ready. The designer stepped out for the People's Choice Awards and collected the first ever Fashion Icon Award, but the road to the red carpet wasn't without its hilarious hurdles, VB style. You'd expect her prep to be cool, calm, and collected, but in reality, she got a haircut in the car on her way to the award show.

Beckham documented hairstylist Ken Paves cutting her hair in the car en route, saying, "So we are now doing hair and makeup in the car, just having a quick haircut. Why are you doing this, Ken? Was someone late today?" Makeup artist Wendy Rowe was also on hand for touch-ups. Talk about leaving it until the last minute.

Hurried haircuts aside (but really, that is serious skill), Beckham looked incredible with a truly well-deserved win and an incredible acceptance speech.

Kylie Jenner's New Lip Kit For Kris Jenner Just Screams, "It's Me, Todd Kraines!"

Several seasons of Keeping Up With the Kardashians ago, Scott Disick introduced the world to Todd Kraines. "Auntie Kris, it's me, Todd Kraines," Disick would shriek in prank calls to Kris Jenner. Disick was inexplicably impersonating a family friend of that same name - although not Jenner's actual nephew - and the hilarious prank became an inside joke for the famous family and its expansive following.

Now, Kylie Jenner has brought back the joke for a lip kit in honor of Jenner's 63rd birthday on Nov. 5. The Kylie Cosmetics Todd Kraines Velvet Lip Kit ($27) comes in a peachy nude shade the matriarch typically wears. The two previously collaborated on a collection for Mother's Day, and many of those products are included in a bundle along with the legendary Todd Kraines Lip Kit.

John Legend Started to Tear Up While Talking About Chrissy Teigen, and Now I'M Sobbing

I've said it once and I'll say it again: find me a love like Chrissy Teigen and John Legend's. The powerhouse couple stepped out on Nov. 12 as Chrissy was honored at Glamour's Women of the Year Awards, and their night together was truly lovely. John, or "Chrissy Teigen's trophy husband" as he calls himself, gave an emotional speech as he presented "the star of the family" with her award.

The 39-year-old singer praised Chrissy for her honesty, talents, passion, sense of adventure, and her "big, beautiful heart." In this age of social media, John believes she shines without a filter thanks to her unapologetic presence. "I am amazed by the woman that you've become," John tenderly told his wife. "And I'm truly glad that the rest of the world has finally found out about it, too."

Chrissy accepted the award from John, calling him "the most incredible husband on the planet. She said, "You are our everything. You completely made me a woman. We've grown together. Our family's grown together. Our careers have grown together . . . This is so sappy, I'm sorry. I hate you, John. I really do." Ahead, watch clips of both John and Chrissy's remarks, plus see photos from their night on the red carpet.

Ryan Reynolds's Detective Pikachu Somehow Looks Strange and Sweet at the Very Same Time

Despite early doubts, the first trailer for Pokémon: Detective Pikachu has been released and it looks pretty damn cute. Based on the recent video game of the same name, the movie follows a disillusioned young man living among Pokémon who suddenly discovers he has the ability to hear Pikachu. The movie stars Ryan Reynolds - yes, as Pikachu - and is the first live-action movie for the nostalgic franchise.

Does this all sounds absolutely ridiculous? Yes. Is it strange to hear Pikachu speak like a human being? For sure. Why does Jigglypuff look so goddamn scary? Unclear. But will people still be seeing Detective Pikachu in theaters? It sure seems like it! Ahead, read reactions from people who found themselves feeling surprised by how much they enjoyed the trailer and its strangely realistic Pikachu.

Kurt Russell Revealed the Sexy Details From His First Date With Goldie Hawn, and We're Blushing

First dates are a total toss-up. Either they can go horribly wrong, replete with drawn-out silences and failed kiss attempts, or they can go swimmingly well, spurring a relationship that spans more than three decades. For Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn, the latter rang true, as the two lovebirds have been adorably inseparable ever since they began dating in 1983. So what exactly did they do on that fateful first date back in the '80s to kick off their 35-year relationship? Kurt spilled the beans on just that when he stopped by Live With Kelly and Ryan, and it's a pretty cute story.

Kurt began by explaining that he and Goldie had been working on a World War II movie called Swing Shift at the time, and he was "pretty careful" about mixing work with his romantic life. But alas, the two had a possible dancing scene to prepare for together, so they did an after-hours practice session at none other than The Playboy Club, where they spent two hours just talking, the 67-year-old actor recalled. What happened next may have been slightly awkward in the moment, but Kurt backed it up by adding, "we've been together ever since!"

Yes, That Really Happened - The Walking Dead Finally Gave Rick and Michonne a Baby

Warning! Spoilers for the latest episode of The Walking Dead ahead.

We finally see how The Walking Dead's universe moves on after the "death" of Rick Grimes, and it's a lot to take in. There are new faces along with the old and dangers still lurking around every corner. But perhaps the most heartwarming surprise is the reveal that Rick's wish to grow his little family with Michonne has come true - the two now share a 5-year-old son named Rick Jr. (also known as RJ).

RJ's existence is revealed near the end of the episode, after we get a look at the drastic changes the communities have gone through during the past six years. We witness Michonne in her new role as the leader of Alexandria's security and how she's understandably wary of the new survivors that Judith brings to the community. After discussing the newcomers with the rest of the council during the community-wide meeting, Michonne retreats to her home for the night, where her thoughts are interrupted by a little boy who runs to her, calling her "Mommy." Cue Richonne fans instantly combusting.

There is a lot to unpack surrounding Michonne and what she's been up to these last few years - especially after seeing that huge X-shaped scar on her back - but the discovery that she and Rick were actually able to make good on their desire to become parents is too bittersweet to ignore. According to showrunner Angela Kang, the idea that the two would have a child was "a sign of hopefulness."

"We wanted to show that Rick and Michonne were committed to each other, fully," Kang told The Hollywood Reporter. "It seemed like a sign of their commitment, and their optimism for the future. They believed they could bring a new child into this world and they could make the world better for that child."

The attitude is a noticeable difference from how Lori and Rick reacted when they discovered she was pregnant with Judith. But that makes complete sense since the survivors were nowhere near as established as they are now in Alexandria. "Michonne and Rick lived in a very different time, and we wanted to show that," Kang explained. "It was a fun process for us, imagining what a world with more children would look like, but also the tragedy that Rick never got to meet this child they were so excited about."

That juxtaposition is definitely obvious in "Who Are You Now?" The episode highlights how Michonne is still living with her grief while raising her children and keeping them safe. Much like Rick did after Lori's death, Michonne finds herself talking to his ghost even though she knows he won't respond. Judith seems used to hearing her mother talk to ghosts but is relatively well-adjusted considering the circumstances. When RJ interrupts his mother, she is very obviously happy to see him, but his father never leaves her thoughts - which is alluded to by the small toy sheriff she keeps that looks just like Rick.

Kang has teased that we'll be getting flashbacks of what transpired during the six-year jump, so hopefully that means we'll be able to see more of Michonne's journey as a mother of two. Until then, take a trip down memory lane and keep scrolling to see photos of the Grimes family when they began anew, way back in season three.

Why Outlander Cut These Gruesome - and Funny - Scenes From the Books in Season 4

The fourth season of Starz's Outlander pushes Claire and Jamie further into uncharted territory in colonial America and offers a chance to meet several new characters. Some of them, like the nefarious pirate Stephen Bonnet, cannot be trusted. Some, like Jamie's Aunt Jocasta, are trying to keep the peace as best they can in this new land and new set of rules. Some, like Rollo the dog, are just plain adorable.

And then there's John Quincy Myers. First introduced in season four's second episode, "Do No Harm," the character is played by Welsh actor Kyle Rees. He's a jovial, hairy delight who can both educate the new Americans on the proper way to respect the Cherokee tribespeople who already call this land home and serve as another mentor to Jamie's nephew Ian (John Bell), who must be aching to talk to someone who isn't a relative by now. Later, he'll be integral to solving a mystery that unites the two communities.

But if Myers seems a little, well, uncouth, in this series, you can trust that he's much more blatant in the books. Described by author Diana Gabaldon in Outlander book Drums of Autumn as having "loose snaky black locks" for hair with a broad smile that's "nonetheless charming for missing half its teeth," he wastes zero time propositioning Claire - not for sex, mind you, but for her to look at his inguinal hernia. He nearly removes his pants right there on the streets of Wilmington before Jamie stops him! Myers later makes the party that Jocasta throws in Jamie and Claire's honor even more memorable by drunkenly insisting she operate on him right this minute (Claire obliges; spreading her patient out on the table in Jocasta's salon and using brandy to sterilize the area, causing several lice to flee).

While that scene didn't make it into this episode, it's likely Rees has seen worse. The actor has made a habit of appearing in period dramas. He was in FX's dark and gory The Bastard Executioner, which is set in 14th-century Wales, and TNT's considerably more PG-rated Will, which was about Shakespeare's early days in London. He was also in the LGBTQ-positive film Pride, although that project was set several decades after the advent of penicillin.

This Crazy Reddit Theory Suggests Nagini Is Voldemort's Mother, and We're Freaking Out

Are you sitting down? Just before the release of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, we've stumbled upon a wild new theory courtesy of our favorite corner of the internet, Reddit. Now, as you know, the new Fantastic Beasts film will have connected threads to the Harry Potter books, even moreso than before. We're going to be a seeing young Minerva McGonagall, as well as a young and maybe slightly gay Dumbledore. But perhaps even more titillating is the mystery surrounding one of the books' great villains: Nagini.

Recently, we learned that not only would we meet the woman who will become Nagini, but we'll also get more information about her origin story. Like, for instance, the fact that she's a Maledictus. But here's where things get really interesting. According to Reddit user soupycutie, there's a lot of evidence to suggest that Nagini may be more than just Voldemort's future horcrux and snake companion. She might be his mother.

There are a few reasons why this may be so. For one, the movie takes place right around the time of Voldemort's birth. Like, within weeks of his birthday! There's also the fact that, in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, there's an interesting fact about Voldemort's mother. Mrs. Cole, who housed Tom Marvolo Riddle in her orphanage once upon a time, said those in charge wondered whether the woman had come from a circus. Just coincidence, or a decades-long secret that is about to have a huge payoff?

There are other threads as well: the fact that Nagini seems to have a very maternal relationship with Voldemort in the books, so much so that she even nursed him to health when he was in the process of being reborn. The theory even uses this as a way of justifying Voldemort's snake-like appearance. Perhaps he's just a chip off the old block. All of it's lining up, right?

As with any good theory, there are a few points of contention. For one, the actress who plays Nagini (Claudia Kim) is of Asian decent, and based solely on Tom Riddle's looks in the movies, he may not be half Asian. But that seems a bit like splitting hairs, doesn't it? Fellow Reddit users bubbled up other complaints: that Merope Gaunt (that's the name of Voldemort's mother in the book) likely wouldn't have joined the circus until after giving birth to Tom, and the movie is set in the weeks before. Then there's the fact that Mrs. Cole likely witnessed Merope's death, but hey, who knows?

Here's the theory in full for you to parse out yourself. For the record, though, plot inconsistencies do not outright nullify a theory. After all, according to the books, Minerva McGonagall's birthday is in 1935, so it's hard to figure out how she'll appear in a movie that's set to take place in 1926. Time can be a funny thing, though, can't it? We're not sure what to believe anymore.

Praise Santa! A Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Holiday Special Is on the Way

Now that you've hopefully gotten well-acquainted with Sabrina, Ambrose, Harvey, Miss Wardwell, and the rest of the gang on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, it's time to share some good news: a holiday special of the dark and twisted Netflix series is coming soon!

Thanks to the streaming giant's new push for holiday content, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter's Tale will debut on Dec. 14, promising plenty more hidden horror movie references, sarcastic one-liners courtesy of Aunt Zelda, and more. According to a press release from Netflix, the episode is described as such:

"The Church of Night, like all covens, celebrates the Winter Solstice - the longest night of the year - when families gather around the Yule Fire to sing pagan carols and tell ghost stories. But the holidays are also a time for guests and visitors - both welcome and unwelcome - you never know what might come down the chimney . . ."

In other words, we have a few things to look forward to, chief among them being original (and likely very creepy) carols sung by the cast and perhaps some more clues as to how Miss Wardwell's nefarious plans for Sabrina will solidify (we have a feeling she'll be giving Sabrina something much more sinister than socks this Christmas). Until the episode finally arrives, you can feast of feasts your eyes on this holiday card shared by showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, which sees Sabrina and Harvey in much better spirits than they are in the season one finale.
