The Best Way to Dress Is Like Your 5-Year-Old Self

At the risk of sounding like I'm really feeling myself, I've got to tell you: I'm dressing better than ever. I'm, like, on another plane of my own personal style. And, now that I'm 34, age has been the deciding factor when it comes to my revised approach to dressing. But if you think I'm about to regurgitate that boring conventional wisdom that the older we get, the more we just know what we like and what looks good on us, and our fashion sense just gets sharper . . . I'm not. That's because my new fashion philosophy is this: the absolute best way to dress is like your 5-year-old self.

Think about it. By the time we're in kindergarten, most of our basic and most enduring aesthetic tastes have been hardwired into our very mitochondria. (Pause while I google whether DNA is even present in mitochondria. OK. It is.) For me, this means I will always have a soft spot for shoulder pads, teal, leopard print, and terracotta. I was raised in Southwest Texas in the late 1980s, after all. But beyond that, children take a devil-may-care attitude to - and a fierce pride in - getting dressed. It's at that age that we start to discover our own identity. It's at that age when most of us start dressing ourselves in the morning; if not for school, on the weekends, at least. When we're still too young to do much of anything autonomously, style is an easy and obvious way for kids to express their rudimentary sense of self. And they have fun doing it. Coincidentally, while I was on my second draft of this story, a fellow writer tweeted this truism after hanging out with her niece:

Clearly, this is a widely agreed upon fact. So, if we already collectively admire the way 5-year-old girls dress, why not just take it one step further and emulate it? Over the last few months, I've been doing just that. To put this style ethos into practice yourself, just follow these few simple suggestions - because no 5-year-old or evolved, modern woman enjoys following rules.

I'm Crowning This the Perfect "Sneaker Dress," and I'm Wearing It Nonstop

When it comes to adding pieces to my closet, there's one variable that's routinely at play . . . a question I regularly ask myself before purchasing: can I wear sneakers with this? And not in a lazy sort of way that might indicate that I've completely given up; it's gotta be something I like. Something I might, say, want to take a picture in.

The search certainly extends to dresses, where the sky is the limit when it comes to hemlines. Maxi, midi, knee-length, and mini all work with sneakers (IMO). So when I spotted this POPSUGAR at Kohl's Flounce-Hem Mini Dress ($24, originally $60) that hit just above the knees but still had a whimsical hem with tons of movement, I knew I'd hit sartorial gold. "Can this be worn with sneakers?" got a big fat check mark.

See how I've been wearing this number ahead.

Our Eyes Are Fixed on Michelle Obama's Hot Pink Heels, and That's Not Going to Change

Michelle Obama looked every bit the glamorous superstar when she took the stage with Oprah Winfrey in Chicago at The United Center to discuss her memoir, Becoming. Why shouldn't she embrace bold colors and festive sequins for her book tour? Michelle's been gracing the world with chats about the strong topics she covers in her collection of stories, and that calls for some confidence. Of course, Michelle knows exactly how to dress the part.

For her sit down with Oprah, Michelle chose cropped, high-waist trousers, a glitzy, sequinned off-the-shoulder top (perfect for holiday season, we might add) and, if that wasn't enough, custom Stuart Weitzman pumps in the prettiest shade of hot pink. Her custom Sally LaPointe outfit is, without a doubt, our favorite from the former FLOTUS's appearances so far, and we couldn't help but drive our wide-eyed wonder about her heels into a full-on shopping spree. Scroll to join on in.

The Sweet Way the Gaines Kids Help With Their 4-Month-Old Brother, Crew

After dropping by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to discuss their new baby, Crew, and some other projects they have in the works - ahem, their very own TV network - Joanna and Chip Gaines gave viewers a look into their lives with their new baby. As parents of five children, it's no secret they have their hands full. But fortunately, they get a lot of assistance from a somewhat unusual place.

"We have a lot of help," Joanna said. And she's not talking about a nanny. The mom of five was referring to her older children - Emmie Kay, 8, Duke, 9, Ella Rose, 12, and Drake, 13 - who love to look after their 4-month-old baby brother.

"[Crew's] the sweetest, sweetest boy. [His siblings] love him," Joanna said. "Our oldest is 13, the youngest before Crew is 8, [so] we have a lot of help . . . All the kids love to hold the baby."

Goop's Annual Gift Guide Includes a Custom Lullaby Recording For - Wait, How Much?

Goop's annual gift guide is always fun to explore, and yes, even the brand itself admits some of the products are "ridiculous but awesome." One such gift that could qualify is this Custom Lullaby Recording for babies. It's quite adorable: a British singer-songwriter named Lotte Mullan will write a lullaby based on information and treasured moments you share about your baby, plus what kind of mood you're going for - a relaxing ballad or something more upbeat. The catch is, it'll set you back $600.

Keep in mind you'll receive the lullaby in the form of a download that can be played forever, and the printout of the lyrics with your customized title - "Erin's Lullaby" - is pretty cute. This could be a great way to go in on a group gift for any friends who've recently had a baby, too! The acoustic song is professionally recorded and mixed in Lotte's London studio, and you can also contact the songwriter for any preferences. See more photos of the lullaby gift ahead to get a better visual, and then peruse lots more affordable gift options for kids.

'90s Parents: You're Gonna Want to Get Your Kids the New Pokémon Game - and Play It Yourself After Bedtime

I was the ripe age of 7 when I was given a Pokémon Red cartridge for Game Boy for my birthday. I played that pixelated game day in and day out on a black and white screen that wasn't backlit, and though there are a couple of other games I've loved in my 28 years (looking at you, Mario Kart), nothing has really ever held up to my love for Pokémon. Because the Pokémon phenomenon was a huge part of my early childhood, when Pokémon Go was released as a mobile game in 2016, I was jazzed to get back into the groove of the game - but was actually pretty disappointed in it (though I definitely wasn't disappointed in this spoof, Chardonnay Go). It just wasn't what I remembered from my childhood and didn't really compare at all to the thrill of wandering through the Kanto region from city to city as Ash Ketchum, battling trainers and catching the original 151 Pokémon.

However, it appears as though Nintendo could feel my acute ache for the game of my childhood, because its new release, Pokémon Let's Go, is literally everything I've dreamed that a modern Pokémon game could be and more (think: the original Game Boy game combined with the fun of chucking Pokéballs at the creatures à la Pokémon Go).

If you were a '90s kid obsessed with Pokémon, your kids were addicted to Pokémon Go, or you just have a Switch and want to find a game to get them off Fortnite (this was an actual bonus a mom friend informed me of), then I can't recommend Pokémon Let's Go enough. But if you're not yet convinced by my personal nostalgia, hear my reasons it's such a great game for kids - as well as why you'll 100 percent want to play it the second your brood heads off to bed - and see all of your buying options ahead.

Read through to get a peek at the brands Whoopi can't say enough good things about.

Why Outlander's Mysterious New Character Has the Power to Change Everything in Season 4

Warning: Spoilers for Outlander ahead!

Talk about a dark and stormy night.

The third episode of Outlander's fourth season, titled "The False Bride," finds Claire (Caitriona Balfe) cold, muddy, scared and lost in the woods - until she meets a strong and silent ghostly stranger who helps her to safety and away from his burial site.

Outlander fans who haven't read Drums of Autumn, author Diana Gabaldon's fourth book in the series, likely had to patiently wait until the end credits to learn that this is indeed Otter-Tooth. Played by Trevor Carroll, Otter-Tooth is key to helping Claire further unlock the mysteries surrounding her time-traveling capabilities (as evident by her discovery that his skull features dental work that has not yet been invented).

"That was such a cool, spooky sequence to film," Balfe recently revealed to POPSUGAR. "Visually, it was quite cold, and obviously Claire finds this skull and there's this amalgam filling, which proves that there are other time travelers around."

In true Outlander fashion, Otter-Tooth comes with his own rich backstory. In the books, the Mohawk people who befriend Claire and Jamie describe him as "the Fire-Carrier." The legend told is that he was a stranger who looked like them, but doesn't quite speak their language. He came to the community several years before our heroes' arrival in an attempt to warn them of white settlers; suggesting the Native Americans rise up and fight with such urgency that it's almost as if he knew what was coming. Things don't go well.

Of course, this isn't the first time Claire has discovered others with her powers. Remember Geillis Duncan? The ride-or-die Scottish nationalist was a known time traveler with a knack for keeping herself alive – that is, of course, before her neck collides with Claire's ax in the season three finale.

Perhaps it's telling then that Balfe also told POPSUGAR that Otter-Tooth "doesn't actually come back, but his legacy plays a big part in the finale." Make of that what you will!

Outlander: Roger and Brianna's Giant Fight Deviates From the Books in a Pretty Awful Way

After two episodes focusing solely on Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) in 1760s America, Outlander's third episode, "The False Bride," finally checks back in with Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and Roger (Richard Rankin) in the 1970s. Sadly, by the end of the episode, their relationship has taken quite the turn.

Warning: Spoilers for the most recent episode of Outlander ahead!

Upon selling his father's house in Inverness, Roger travels to America to see Bree in Boston and take her with him to a Scottish festival in North Carolina where he's performing. Things are going really well for them until Roger asks Brianna to marry him. She doesn't exactly bolt because she obviously loves Roger, but Brianna is decidedly not ready for that kind of huge commitment, and she rejects him. She doesn't see why they can't still sleep together, though, and that's when Roger really loses it.

"You don't want to marry me, but you'll f*ck me?!" he yells. "If all I wanted was to have my way with you, I would've had you on your back a dozen times last Summer."

After this, Bree slaps him and they go a few rounds about how he has slept with other women, but he expects Bree to save herself for when they're at least engaged. It's incredibly hypocritical of him, but he thinks he's in the right and storms off.

If non-book readers were left with their jaws on the floor about how Roger could be so awful to Bree, well - they're right. The show actually takes this fight nearly verbatim out of Diana Gabaldon's book, Drums of Autumn, upon which season four is based. In fact, in the book, the fight gets even uglier, with Roger forcing a kiss on Bree and then her biting him.

However, there is one thing in the book that makes the entire incident slightly more palatable. In it, Bree and Roger work things out during the fight and it makes a big difference in how I personally regard Brianna's agency in all this. After they've had their row, she explains how her parents' marriage was supposed to be forever but then it turned out her mother went on to meet her soulmate later. Bree won't have that - she'll marry once and that's it, so she has to be 100 percent sure and she's not quite there yet.

Roger understands that, but he says he will have her as his wife or not at all. He won't just sleep with her. So, Roger is going to wait until Bree finishes her degree and then they can actually be together for more than a few days at a time.

On the show, the fight ends and Bree goes to find Roger later. The reason I don't care for this resolution is that Bree should not be the one going to Roger, hat in hand. Without the momentum of the fight carrying them into a resolution, it feels much more like she is in the wrong and must explain herself to him rather than Roger having to grovel for Bree's forgiveness at saying such gross and cruel things to her.

Either way, if you're wondering how Roger could be such a jerk, keep in mind two things. First, this is only 1971. The women's liberation movement is still in its infancy, and society is still grappling with accepting women who want sexual freedom without marital commitment.

Second, Roger was raised in relatively rural Scotland by a reverend; Brianna was raised in urban Boston by Claire, the only woman in her entire medical school class. Those are two very different perspectives on sex and gender roles, so it's not a huge surprise. And while of course viewers want all the leads to be amazing people all the time, that's just not realistic. Even Jamie, whose only flaw it seems is that he can't wink, had that incident in season one where he used corporal punishment on Claire after she ran off and put his men in danger. Modern-day readers/viewers may see that as domestic abuse, but that's not necessarily how it was viewed back then. It's an interesting gray area and it doesn't stop Claire from falling for Jamie, so this likely won't stop Brianna from falling for Roger. But it does present an obstacle for them, certainly.

Outlander airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Starz.

Get Your First Look at Chilling Adventures of Sabrina's Holiday Special, A Midwinter's Tale

The devil may work hard, but Netflix works harder! With the streaming giant's push for holiday content, it's no surprise that it decided to bring the festive fun to its popular new series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

The holiday special, titled A Midwinter's Tale, debuts on Dec. 14 and follows our favorite band of witches and humans as they celebrate the holidays. The Spellmans are set to celebrate the Winter Solstice with the rest of the coven from the Church of Night - which apparently includes singing pagan carols (specifically original carols sung by the cast!) and telling ghost stories - but it seems they'll be dealing with some unexpected guests, both welcome and unwelcome. Since this is Chilling Adventures, we have no doubt we're in for something dark and a little creepy with a festive twist. Maybe we'll even get a few answers to some of the questions we have from the first season? OK, probably not.

Luckily, Netflix was in a sharing mood and unveiled some exciting photos from the upcoming special. In the pictures, Sabrina rocks a new platinum-white 'do, Aunt Hilda looks ready to give someone a beatdown in the kitchen, and Ambrose looks like the gorgeous holiday snack you need to get in the merry mood. See all the photos ahead!

The Scrubs Cast Looks So Damn Happy to Be Reunited, 8 Years After the Show's Final Season

It's a Scrubs reunion! The main cast of the medical comedy looked so happy to be reunited on Saturday at the 2018 Vulture Festival in LA, eight years after the show ended. Stars Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes, and more, participated in a panel discussion for the festival, and, yep, the topic of a reboot came up. According to The Hollywood Reporter, series creator Bill Lawrence has reservations about a revival.

"I would do anything to get to work with not only this group (but the entire crew) . . . it was the best time in my life," Lawrence said. But "sometimes reboots - not all the time - feel like a money grab." While a full episodic revival may not be in the cards for Scrubs, Lawrence did admit a "short movie" could work best. There's still hope! Keep your finger crossed and keep reading to see more photos of the exciting reunion ahead.

All the Powers the Queen Has - but Doesn't Actually Use

The queen is on Britain's coins and stamps, and usually once a year, she puts on the crown and assumes her throne to open parliament. But while Elizabeth II is clearly very important, does she really have any political power over how the UK is run?

The answer is yes . . . and no.

Technically, the queen has plenty of clout thanks to the "royal prerogative," a set of powers passed down through generations of monarchs that can be exercised without having to get parliament's backing. However, in reality, each sovereign automatically hands those rights over to their ministers, meaning real power resides with elected politicians. And we know just what the prerogative involves, because back in 2003, ministers outlined the powers involved to be more transparent.

The royal prerogative is pretty wide-ranging and includes things like the ability to appoint and dismiss all ministers in a government, start and end a war, appoint members of the Civil Service, and dissolve parliament. It also covers issuing passports and offering a royal pardon. And while parliament may go about debating and making laws, nothing hits the statute books in Britain until it's received royal assent. (The last monarch to refuse that was Queen Anne back in the early 1700s.) And that underlines the real nature of the queen's power. All these rights are carried out day to day in her name, but she leaves the process of governing the country to the politicians who have been voted in by the people.

All that said, the queen does still have some rather important political duties. After a UK general election, it is up to her to appoint the prime minister, although she sticks with the convention of offering the role to the person most able to form a government, which is usually the leader of the party with the most votes. But the official royal family website states that if there's no clear choice, the queen can "use her discretion" when choosing who to ask, which is a pretty major power to hold.

The queen also holds regular meetings with the prime minister, which, the royal website states, include Elizabeth II having "a right and a duty" to express her views on government matters. And the monarch must open each new session of parliament. Every 12 months, Elizabeth II heads to the Palace of Westminster, where she reads The Queen's Speech - neither the House of Lords nor the House of Commons can get down to work until that has happened. However, the speech, setting out the government's plans for the year, is always written by ministers rather than the monarch herself.

Given her years of experience and the huge respect in which she's held, any advice coming from the queen is bound to carry plenty of weight with even the most serious of politicians. And that, in itself, is a pretty impressive power to wield.

Dr. Maggie Pierce Dramatically Reads Iconic Grey's Anatomy Quotes, and It'll Give You All the Feels

If there's one thing Grey's Anatomy has consistently done throughout the past 15 seasons, it's cause all of us to openly weep with every single emotional, perfectly written line brought to us by queen Shonda Rhimes. These quotes are so good that fans have tattooed them permanently upon their skin and can be brought back to the exact gut-wrenching moment of an episode with one glance of the words. So when we had the chance to sit down with Kelly McCreary, Dr. Maggie Pierce herself, we had her pay homage to some of the most iconic lines from the show. Everything from this classic Meredith Grey moment . . .

. . . to this sage piece of wisdom from Richard Webber.

Watch it all go down in the video above, and look out for the Season 15 midseason premiere when Grey's Anatomy is back in 2019!

41 Moments Between The Good Place's Eleanor and Chidi That Are So Forking Romantic

Since premiering in 2016, The Good Place has done more for ethics and philosophy than a single one of my college professors (no shade, but a little shade). The Michael Shur comedy has garnered a lot of love from viewers for its amazing cast, hilarious catchphrases, and ingenious plot. Like other well-known Shur creations, The Good Place also boasts the iconic pairing that is "Cheleanor," aka Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell) and Chidi Anagonye (William Jackson Harper).

Eleanor, self-proclaimed Arizona trash, is the de facto leader of "Team Cockroach" and kind of the worst person in the best way. Chidi is the ethics professor who serves as the morality mentor for "Team Cockroach" and couldn't make a decision if his life depended on it. Somehow the two of them make the most adorable, ridiculous couple. They are literally soulmates (though that was in the Bad Place, so it might not actually be true . . . ). They don't make one another "better," as some would expect them to. Instead, the two bring out the best in each other in surprising ways (She read about moral particularism! He made a decision in less than 30 seconds!) while still being their authentically terrible selves.

So if you're like me and can't wait until the episode where Eleanor and Chidi make it back into each other's arms, I know you'll appreciate this roundup of their greatest moments together. Keep reading and try not to forking cry, you sons of benches.

We're All Out of Sarcastic Comments, So Here Are 10 Gifts For the Chandler Bing Fan in Your Life

Friends may have ended its run back in 2004, but thanks to the magic of syndication and Netflix, the show lives on in our hearts and, thankfully, our screens. While we can all relate to the entire Central Perk gang in some way, each character speaks deeply to the soul of select fans; we all know if we're a Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler, or Ross. Right now, I'm talking to all the Bing-a-Lings out there. Sure, we're a tad neurotic, self-deprecating, and almost chronically sarcastic, but we're still a hoot, and that's all that really matters! So if you're "The Funny One" and damn proud of it (or just shopping for one), I highly suggest investing in these gifts.

24 Adorable Behind-the-Scenes Photos From Outlander

With all the realistic violence, heartbreak, blood, sweat, and tears that gets thrown around Outlander week after week - we're looking at you, Stephen Bonnet - it can be hard to remember that the Starz series isn't actually real life. But behind Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan's stunning performances as star-crossed soulmates Claire and Jamie, is a TV-show set full of laughter, bunny ears, and plenty of Rollo. At least, that's what it seems like judging from Starz's collection of truly adorable behind-the-scenes photos from the last four seasons, which you can check out in all their glory ahead.

Bestselling Novel Dumplin' Is Coming to Netflix, and the Cast Is Pretty Perfect

A movie adaptation of Dumplin' is heading to Netflix, and Jennifer Aniston is taking the lead. Dumplin' is a comedy-drama based on the New York Times bestselling book by Julie Murphy and will be available on Netflix and in select theaters on Dec. 7. It tells the story of Willowdean Dickson, a "self-proclaimed fat girl" played by Danielle Macdonald (Patti Cake$), who's dubbed "Dumplin'" by her former beauty-queen mom (Aniston).

An always-confident Willowdean doesn't care what anybody else thinks, until she falls for Private School Bo at her fast-food restaurant job - and he likes her back. Per the book's description, "Instead of finding new heights of self-assurance in her relationship with Bo, Will starts to doubt herself. So she sets out to take back her confidence by doing the most horrifying thing she can imagine: entering the Miss Clover City beauty pageant - along with several other unlikely candidates - to show the world that she deserves to be up there as much as any twiggy girl does. Along the way, she'll shock the hell out of Clover City - and maybe herself most of all."

Dumplin' is directed by Anne Fletcher (The Proposal, 27 Dresses). In addition to Aniston, confirmed cast members include Odeya Rush (Lady Bird), Dove Cameron (Descendants), and Harold Perrineau (Lost), and Dolly Parton will debut original music in the film's soundtrack. Get even more details about the Dumplin' movie, cast, trailer, and music ahead.

Kylie Jenner Trying to Teach Stormi to Say "Kylie Cosmetics" Is Freakin' Adorable

Kylie Jenner is passing on her love of makeup to her nine-month-old daughter, Stormi Webster. On Nov. 18, the 21-year-old beauty mogul shared a video of her little one on Instagram. She tried to teach Stormi how to say "Kylie Cosmetics" as she held an eye shadow palette. Now, Stormi's less than a year old, so her go-to word is understandably "da da," but everyone gets an "A" for effort all around.

Watch the video above to see the heart-melting cuteness for yourself. If she does grow up to be a beauty-lover like her mom, Stormi will definitely have plenty to work with: including a collection inspired by her own name.

This Dessert-Inspired Body-Care Line Doubles Down on Salted Caramel

The early 2000s were a simpler time, when we watched Jessica Simpson figure out if tuna was chicken or fish. In addition to her Newlyweds shenanigans alongside Nick Lachey, the stunning blonde had a cosmetics line at Sephora called Dessert Beauty. Each scent was sugary, sweet, and over the top, and we've been grieving the loss of the brand until now.

Body-care brand Being by Sanctuary Spa has spunky, fun packaging and the same sugary-sweet scents Simpson's line was famous for. One product in particular, the Salted Caramel & Macadamia Bath Bomb, smells exactly like our preteen favorite. The scent can be found in a ton of different products from the company, all available at Ulta. Check them all out ahead.

If You're Nervous to Try a Boxing Class, Here's What an Instructor Wants You to Know

As boutique fitness classes have exploded in popularity, there's one type of group fitness that's really taken off: boxing. And while some classes are more hardcore and designed to make you feel like you're starring in a Rocky sequel, others include elements of boxing that are perfect for beginners.

One of the most popular boutique boxing classes is Rumble, a boxing-inspired group fitness class in Los Angeles and New York with new locations opening up around the country. I'm a big fan of Rumble and take a class about once a week. But when I first started a few months ago, I had no idea what I was doing and was afraid I would make an ass out of myself or, worse, get hurt.

If you're looking to incorporate boxing into your routine but are too intimidated to get started, we tapped certified personal trainer Kendall Toole, founding trainer at Rumble in LA. She breaks down what to expect at your first class, what you should wear, and how to get the most out of your workout. Read on for her helpful tips.

A Diary on How to Indulge on Thanksgiving Without Feeling Gross

Thanksgiving might be my favorite holiday. Besides being able to spend it with the people I care about, it's entirely centered around food, drink, and more food. And while I spend my days writing about health and wellness and a good number of my nights working out, all bets are off on Thanksgiving. There is no food shaming, no internal pangs of guilt for skipping the salad, and if all I want are carbs, carbs, and more carbs, so be it. But after too many Thanksgivings feeling uncomfortable in my clothes by night's end and nursing a hangover the next day, I knew I had to shift things around - at least a little. Here's my foolproof plan for feeling my best all through the day while still eating and imbibing my way through the evening.

Morning

9 a.m. Wake up. One of the best things about having the day off is sleeping in. During the workweek, it's easy for me to neglect this important aspect of my life, so I try to allow myself extra time in bed on Thanksgiving. Once I'm up, I start the day with coffee, water, and a simple smoothie (banana, almond milk, handful of nuts). I keep breakfast light since I have a workout scheduled.

10:15 a.m. Morning workout. It used to be that I spent all of Thanksgiving morning being lazy on the couch until stuffing myself with turkey and pumpkin pie. Not anymore. I now make sure that I always have at least an hour of strenuous exercise on the books. In the past, it used to be a hike, but my new tradition is to hit up SoulCycle's annual Turkey Burn. This 90-minute class is not only energizing, but it also helps to relieve any stress I might be feeling about dinner prep. It also doesn't hurt to know that I spent my morning exercising and burning calories before an evening of total indulgence.

Afternoon

12 p.m. Lunch. As soon as my workout is over, food becomes my focus. In the past, Thanksgiving was also a day of a decadent brunch, but I now make a point to put together a filling - but healthy - meal that focuses on protein and veggies. This helps keep my energy levels up until dinner and keeps things light and easy on my digestive system. Poached eggs, turkey sausage or bacon, and a sweet potato hash served alongside a simple green salad is a favorite of mine. And since I'm doing the cooking, I can make sure that my meal well-balanced and healthy. After eating, I take a quick shower and put a few drops of eucalyptus oil on the shower floor. It makes my bathroom feel a little like a day spa and the camphor-like eucalyptus seems to help ease any muscle tension I might have.

2 p.m. No rest - just go. Since my boyfriend and I host Thanksgiving dinner at our house, it basically means we spend the entire afternoon running around. Whether we're cooking, running last-minute errands, or getting the house ready, we are on our feet. We also keep a crudités plate out to snack on in case we get hungry - raw veggies make a tasty and healthy snack. I can tell you from personal experience that being drunk before the food is ready is not a good look and never really ends well. These days, we limit our drinking to a glass of Champagne each until guests arrive.

Evening

6 p.m. Guests are here! With dinner still cooking, our friends and I make a dent in the appetizers and cocktails. I pace myself a little bit because I want room to enjoy dinner and dessert. I'm also still up and about getting dinner ready, setting the table, and doing all the other last-minute things that go into hosting a dinner for 15 people.

7 p.m. Dinner is served. Once the meal hits the table, I'm officially in relaxation mode. I don't put a limit on what I can or cannot eat - my goal is to enjoy everything and to not make myself feel bad about it in the process. Given that it's a long night filled with food and booze, I do make a point to drink a lot of water (my body just can't handle hangovers the way it used to . . . ). I also give myself a little time to digest before heading in for a second helping of food. While not my intention, taking my time while eating often results in eating less. I'm also lucky enough to live near a park that offers stunning views of the San Francisco skyline and Golden Gate Bridge, so we have a tradition of doing a short uphill trek before dessert. Besides the views (and Champagne toast!), this walk really helps get rid of feeling overstuffed!

12 a.m. Time to call it a night. Chances are that if the Thanksgiving leftovers are in my house, I will continue to eat and snack on them for days on end. This often results in multiple pumpkin pie breakfasts and night after night of turkey and all the high-calorie, fat-laden trimmings. And while I don't put any boundaries on myself during Thanksgiving, I do like to get back to my normal eating habits once it's over. To avoid this scenario, we usually pack ourselves a (normal-sized) meal or two worth of leftovers and thank our friends for going home with the rest.

With turkey roasting in the oven, latkes sizzling in a skillet, and no shortage of holiday cookies, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas may seem like they're all about food. There Are New Exercise Guidelines For Americans, and They Are Totally Achievable

You know exercise is good for you, and it has so many health benefits beyond weight loss: it can help prevent disease, relieve anxiety, give you more energy, and help you sleep. But how much should you be doing a week? The new exercise recommendations, published on Nov. 12 in JAMA titled "The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans," were created by the Department of Health and Human Services and outline how much exercise the average American adult should do for overall health.

The 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee came to these guidelines after conducting a "systematic review of the science supporting physical activity and health," according to the article in JAMA. The new guidelines, which are the first to be updated since 2008, say adults should do at least 150-300 minutes a week of moderate-intensity exercise, or 75-150 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity. They also recommend doing strength training activities (such as weightlifting or resistance training) two or more days a week.

"Recommendations emphasize that moving more and sitting less will benefit nearly everyone," the report said. "Individuals performing the least physical activity benefit most by even modest increases in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity."

If up to 300 minutes (five hours) of exercise a week sounds like a lot, the advisory committee defines moderate-intensity activity as brisk walking, playing volleyball, or raking the yard; basically, anything that gets you moving and gets your heart rate up from its resting pace. The minutes you spend walking quickly to your car, taking the stairs, and doing yard work all count.

Vigorous-intensity activity depends on the level of effort you put in, but is generally more intense exercises such as Spin classes, running, swimming, or doing a HIIT class, and you only need to do 75-150 minutes of this type of activity a week for overall health. But even light-intensity physical activity, such as walking slowly (2 mph or less) or light chores, add up and can provide health benefits, "especially if a person replaces sedentary behavior with light-intensity activity," the report states - just not as much as moderate or vigorous physical activity.

If you hate going to the gym or are dreading that HIIT class every morning, you could dial back your exercise and focus more on activities you actually enjoy: hiking with a friend, biking around the neighborhood, or swimming laps at the local pool. It all adds up and improves your overall health as opposed to just sitting on your couch.
