To the Stranger Who Offered to Help Me on a Flight: You Don't Know How Much It Mattered

It was the first trip we'd taken after losing our pregnancy, and I couldn't handle much. Deep breaths in and out. A smile at my kids. Getting to Disney World and attempting to take in the sights and smells was my only goal. Just get there, I'd repeat to myself. I'd wanted this time away with my family so we could smile again, if only for a few moments here and there. But the trip was bittersweet. From the moment we left, I was already dreading returning home, back to the reality of what had happened. So, when we arrived at the Orlando airport after our time away only to find out our flight was delayed by several hours, you'd think I would have been happy we could stay just a little bit longer. Instead, the unexpected turn of events filled me with anxiety and dread.

I thought often about the lady on the plane. How she couldn't have known what I was going through that night. How she was in the same boat we were. How she could very easily have pretended not to notice my quiet sobs.

I remember sitting on the floor by the ticket counter, staring off into space. Worst case scenarios filled my head. What if we didn't take off that night? What if we couldn't get a hotel room? What if the kids started acting out of control and I couldn't deal with it? Since our loss, I'd been having a tough time getting through the day when everything went right. When things went wrong, I fell apart, and our flight delay was proving to be no exception. Somehow, my husband convinced me to get up from the floor, and I practically sleepwalked to a restaurant so we could eat. Meanwhile, periodic flight updates pinged our phones, and things went from bad to worse. We wouldn't take off until midnight, almost six hours after the planned time. My body practically vibrated with anxiety as I pictured the two-hour drive home with three kids once we landed at the airport at 2:30 a.m.

Entertaining the kids in the terminal for the next five hours was about as challenging as I'd envisioned. When running back and forth got old, they colored, snacked, and ran around again before exhaustion set in. At one point, all of my daughters were crying, and so was I. I felt physically and emotionally drained. Every little incident felt like the biggest problem in the world, from their fights over crayons to their repeated requests to go to the bathroom. Bottom line: I wasn't coping with this delay as well as I usually would under different circumstances.

Once we finally boarded the plane, the kids' whining only escalated. They were so overtired, and who could blame them? I was barely hanging on myself, and my tears were flowing freely now. I cried out of exhaustion and out of grief. I can only imagine what other passengers thought as my kids and I basically sobbed our way to our seats. My husband was doing his best to calm us all down, but it was a bad scene. Mercifully, once the plane took off, at least my little one fell asleep. But I wasn't even trying to keep myself together at this point.

A woman with several tired kids of her own was sitting in the row in front of us, across the aisle. She clearly had plenty to contend with herself, but I noticed her looking back at me every so often with a concerned look on her face. I heard her say something to one of her children about a sweet mama being upset. She finally leaned over and asked gently, "Do you need me to watch your babies?" Babies? My kids aren't babies, was my first thought. I don't know why I wasn't immediately touched by her kind gesture; I guess I felt too overwhelmed to take it in at that moment. I shook my head and went back to being miserable.

It wasn't until later that I realized just how meaningful it was that a total stranger even cared about me. In fact, in the following months, once the fog of my grief dissipated slowly, I thought often about the lady on the plane. How she couldn't have known what I was going through that night. How she was in the same boat we were, with kids up much later than usual, cramped, hungry, tired, and ready to be in their own beds. How she could very easily have pretended not to notice my quiet sobs. How she could have judged me for how poorly I was seemingly handling a simple flight delay. Instead, this stranger showed me compassion, on a plane of all places, where decency goes out the window in far too many situations. This was late at night, when every soul on board our flight had expected to be at home already, not just starting the trip.

I see today it's the kindness of others, both from those I know and those I don't, like that mom on the plane, that have helped me in my recovery from our awful loss. So even though it was a long time ago now, I wish I could thank her for seeing my struggle, for not judging me, for putting her own challenges aside and offering to help me, and most of all, for proving that no matter what you're going through, there's so much good in the world, even at 30,000 feet.

We Asked, They Answered: A Bunch of Guys Share Their Best Dating Tips (That Actually Work)

Frankly, I was starting to wonder if my old tried-and-true dating tips have gotten stale, so I decided to take a break from my own online dating experiments and waxing poetic about dating apps to listen in on what the gentlemen had to say about what works and what doesn't when it comes to the art of romance. Here are their honest answers for single men and single women navigating the world of dating.

This Is Why It Feels So Good to Give Back

I still remember the moment I made the conscious decision to spend the holidays helping others instead of spending it with my family. I was just out of college, and I decided that I wanted my holidays to instead be a time of giving back - a time where I tried my best to help those in need. One Thanksgiving, when the soup kitchen was not accepting any more volunteers, I decided to buy holiday meals at the grocery store and hand them out to people experiencing homelessness. I was blown away by how many amazing people I met while giving out food. Many of those people I helped told me I had made their day, but little did they know, they had made mine as well.

Like many of us, I have always been drawn to helping others. Whether it's by volunteering at soup kitchens, rescuing and rehabilitating countless stray animals, or making monetary donations to causes closest to me, looking for ways to give back gives me a deep sense of purpose.

Giving creates a special feeling; the words "elation" and "fulfillment" come to mind. While giving back is often described as "selfless," we all know that we also experience positive benefits from helping others and working in our communities. And science backs it up. In research done by the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley it has been proven that pro-social generosity generates good feelings. Here are a few different reasons why we feel better when we are more giving:

This Little-Known iPhone Space Bar Hack Has Everyone Losing Their Minds

Every once in a while, we learn something new about our iPhone that has us screaming, "Where has this been all our lives?!" and that's exactly what happened with the latest space bar hack. Over the weekend, Krissy Brierre-Davis took to Twitter to share an iPhone epiphany - one that alleviates all cursor struggles we have as a result of our "fat thumb." In the photo, Krissy explains, "If you click and hold the space bar, you can move the cursor instead of trying to drag the cursor itself with your fat thumb lol." She also wrote that she feels "duped," after living so long without knowing this trick, and we couldn't agree more!

Officially speaking, this "fat thumb cursor hack" is known as 3D Touch, and it works on the iPhone 6s and later iPhone devices (excluding the iPhone SE). The best part is, it works on the whole keyboard. One Twitter user replied to Krissy's tweet, writing, "it doesn't have to be the spacebar, you can press and hold any key for this function, difference is you have to press the letter keys a little harder."

Just like every major internet discovery, some people are saying they've known about this for a while, revealing even more about the 3D Touch sorcery. Another user added that if you "hold a bit harder" while you're already pushing down for the cursor, "you can also highlight everything." This highlighter tool came with the recent iOS 12 update.

If you're anything like us and your jaw is still on the floor after learning this trick that's apparently been around since 2015 (!!), please join us in thanking the geniuses of the internet who brought this to our attention. Ahead, find more videos of the trick in action, and see how others are just as impressed as we are with the hack.

Wondering How to Take a Screenshot on Your New iPhone? Here's an Easy Step-by-Step Guide!

Got a new phone? It may take some getting used to, especially if the design is different from your last mobile device. The new models of iPhones (X, XS, XS Max, and XR) are superpopular right now. They come with new features and advanced technologies that have a wave of users making the switch. While you'll get a lot more with these new phones, you'll notice one thing is missing. The iPhone X, XS, XS Max, and XRs no longer have a home button.

Without the home button, the process of taking screenshots is different. While it may take you some time to get used to this change, the iOS 11 system allows you to do a lot more with your screenshots. When you take a screenshot with the iPhone X models or using iOS 11, the captured image automatically appears on the bottom left-hand corner of your screen. You can edit your screenshots with one click, and the new technology allows you to easily share your screenshot by email, text, social media, and other options without having to save it to your phone.

Prepare Yourself - Jennifer Lopez, Queen of Statement Fashion, Is Bringing Back Visible Thongs

You may already know early-2000s fashion is going to be one of 2019's hottest trends, but I have proof the resurgence will dip into some divisive nostalgic trends. May I present exhibit A: Jennifer Lopez's sultry music video look, complete with the low-rise pants and a visible thong.

Of course, J Lo is known for her statement fashion - need I remind you of her Valentino couture cape? She's not afraid of a few fashion risks, and she can also set the tone for style, while others will quickly follow suit. While filming with DJ Khaled in Miami, Jennifer opted for a dangerously sexy combo: a cropped white tee and Natasha Zinko suit pants with a matching thong, which were seen at London Fashion Week in February. (I'm having strong flashbacks to 2001 red carpets.) This trend may be polarizing, but I can't wait to see how J Lo pulls it off in the music video. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, if anyone can do it, she can. I rest my case.

Victoria Beckham, aka the funniest person on Instagram, is always up for taking a walk down memory lane and reminiscing about past outfits - good or bad. "This haunts me like you wouldn't believe," Victoria starts, holding a photo of herself and David Beckham wearing those matchy-matchy leather outfits from Gucci. Meghan Markle Added a Little Somethin', Somethin' to Her Sequin Top, and It Made All the Difference

Meghan Markle stepped out with Prince Harry for the 2018 Royal Variety Performance at London Palladium, and while she first appeared to be in a gown, this mama-to-be had a trick up her sleeve. Meghan worked a sequin-embroidered top from Safiyaa ($1,149) with a mermaid skirt that trailed the floor behind her.

While the shoppable version does not come affixed with straps, Meghan's decision to add a halter made her outfit a lot more functional as she climbed the steps in heels and toted her Olga Berg box clutch, showing off her glowing Birks earrings and stunning engagement ring, right by her husband's side.

Meghan offered us all this brilliant hack right in the midst of the holiday season: create a makeshift dress with a bustier or ornate tank you can wear later with jeans, and get the most out of your look. I Still Can't Stop Thinking About Lupita Nyong'o in This White Tom Ford Gown

Lupita Nyong'o looks breathtaking just about any time she sets foot on a red carpet, so should we really be surprised that her look practically stole the show at the Governors Awards? Not really, but that still doesn't change the fact that my jaw is currently on the floor.

The Black Panther actress made an appearance at the Sunday evening ceremony wearing an ivory Tom Ford fringe dress that's giving me all the 1920s It-girl vibes in the world. The floor-length gown's design featured cold shoulder sleeves, layered fringe, and a plunging v-neck. Nyong'o finished the look by pulling her braided hair into an updo that made it easier for us all to be blinded by her stunning Anabela Chan diamond earrings.

Keep reading to see her red carpet look from every angle.

Mandy Moore's Wedding Dress Was Pink, and the Exact Opposite of Traditional

When it came time for Mandy Moore to pick the designer of her wedding dress, she looked no further than Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte. As a longtime fan and friend of the brand, Mandy's desire for something completely unique and nontraditional was fulfilled in the most beautiful way possible: in color! Mandy posted a series of photos from her wedding, which included a glimpse of her stunning pale pink ruffled dress, embellished with little polka dots and a gathered floral design around her waistline.

According to E! News, Mandy married Dawes frontman Taylor Goldsmith over the weekend in an intimate ceremony at her Los Angeles home. While her dress was anything but traditional, her reasoning makes perfect sense. Earlier this month, the This Is Us actress told POPSUGAR that she wanted to look like herself. "I just want to feel like the best version of myself, not too fussy or done-up," she said. "I've heard that brides regret their hair or makeup; that they sort of forced themselves into this idea of what they thought they should look like at their wedding. It wasn't true to who they really are. I don't want to fall into that trap."

With flowers in her hair and a stunning pink Rodarte gown, we have a feeling Mandy has zero regrets about her look. Ahead, find photos of Mandy wearing Rodarte at the 2018 Emmys, and more photos to come of her stunning wedding gown.

Kendall Jenner and Kaia Gerber Look Like a Walking Holiday Card With Their Street Style

Kendall Jenner and Kaia Gerber have coordinated on their California outings before, but this time, it seems they took the holiday season into account. The ladies stepped out casually in West Hollywood, sporting mom jeans, trendy footwear - Kendall in leather slingbacks and Kaia in high-top Converse - and two Winter-friendly sweaters.

The classic combination is one we'll probably reach for through the chilly months over and over, but giving the look festive flavor with the help of a gal pal by our side doesn't seem like a bad idea. Whether you prefer a hunter green cardigan like Kaia's or Kendall's cherry red turtleneck (which she matched to her Louis Vuitton change purse), grab your favorite denim and pick the jumper that speaks to you after the jump.

Lady Gaga in a Voluminous Valentino Gown Is More Than a Look - It's an Entire Mood

Lady Gaga stole the show when she hit the red carpet at the Governors Awards on Sunday evening wearing a voluminous Valentino gown. The design, which we first saw at the Spring 2019 runway show, featured an off-the-shoulder neckline with giant puffy sleeves. The exaggerated trapeze shape made sure this dress made a serious statement. If the silhouette seemed familiar, it could be because Tracee Ellis Ross wore a similar style in hot pink to the Emmys.

Gaga teamed the dramatic gown with equally dramatic jewels, namely a pair of Harry Kotlar diamond cluster earrings and her stunning pink sapphire and diamond engagement ring. She made sure to show off both to full effect as she posed during the event. Keep reading to see her look from every angle and to see the gown on the runway.

A Poll Found That a Third of Parents in the US Plan to Skip Their Kids' Flu Shots

A poll conducted by C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI, found that 34 percent of parents planned on forgoing flu shots for their kids for the 2018-2019 Winter season.

Although the online survey only considered a small amount of parents with children between the ages of 1 and 18 - 1,977 moms and dads to be exact - the results are startling. Sarah Clark, the poll's codirector, said that misinformation surrounding the flu vaccine likely plays a part in the trend.

"Child health providers are a critical source of information to explain the rationale for annual flu vaccination and to address parents' questions about flu vaccine safety and effectiveness," she said. "Without clear guidance from the provider, parents may be left with misinformation, such as the suggestion that the flu vaccine causes the flu."

"For these families, we need to explore other mechanisms to convey accurate information and allow parents to hear a more balanced viewpoint."

According to the survey, four out of 10 participants said that "they base their decisions about the flu vaccine on what they read and hear" and the info they're getting might not be correct. Parents who declined to get their kids the flu shot quoted on average seven more "sources" supporting why they question the shot's effectiveness.

Sarah believes that goes to show just how much misinformation about the flu shot is out there.

"There appears to be an echo chamber around flu vaccine," said Sarah. "Parents who are not choosing flu vaccination for their child report hearing or reading opinions that question or oppose the vaccine. At the same time, parents who decided their child will get flu vaccine report opinions that largely support vaccination."

It's critical to ensure now more than ever that moms and dads are getting the correct information about flu shots and other vaccinations.

"It's important to acknowledge that for some parents, child health providers are not the sole influence, or even the primary influence, on decisions about the flu vaccine," explained Sarah. "For these families, we need to explore other mechanisms to convey accurate information and allow parents to hear a more balanced viewpoint."

The CDC recommends that every healthy person over the age of 6 months should get a flu shot for the 2018-2019 season. The website also says that, "[The flu shot] can reduce flu illnesses, doctors' visits, and missed work and school due to flu, as well as prevent flu-related hospitalizations. [The] flu vaccine also has been shown to be life-saving in children."

This Movie May Be Considered a Christmas Classic, but I Refuse to Let My Kids Watch It

I'm all for letting my children watch classic Christmas movies. Elf, A Christmas Story, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas? Absolutely. But there is one beloved but still horrifically scary movie that I have no shame in hiding from my kids at all costs: Gremlins.

As a 37-year-old mother of two, I'm still scarred from watching that movie as a child. My three older brothers sat me down before Christmas one year, and we all watched it together. They roared with laughter while the tiny (and possessed) Gremlins took over the entire city. Me? I sat petrified, hiding behind a blanket I desperately clutched to my chin. And of course, my brothers thought that was even more hilarious - their cute little sister scared of a cuddly Gremlin.

If it horrified me - a pretty easygoing child - I know it will scare the hell out of them.

That Christmas (after many evenings full of nightmares), I woke up excited to sneak downstairs to see what Santa had brought me. And what did my mother place into my red stocking? A gremlin! Those beady little eyes were the first thing I noticed when I walked downstairs on Christmas morning. My brothers loved torturing me with that stuffed animal for months after that.

Because of all this, I will not expose my children to that movie. We all remember the plot, right? Billy receives Gizmo, a mogwai, for a Christmas present from his father. Only he allows his buddy to get Gizmo wet, which creates many evil spawns to take over the city. From there, havoc unleashes and kills the Christmas joy out of everyone. You couldn't pay me to share that with my children. My kids are sensitive, and sometimes the most harmless of movies can give them nightmares. So if Gremlins horrified me - a pretty easygoing child - I know it will scare the hell out of them.

Some may argue that I'm depriving my kids of some innocent and nostalgic Christmas joy by not letting them watch this classic movie. "It's just a movie! And it's rated PG! They'll be fine," you might say. But I beg to differ. If I can control one thing this Christmas, it will be that Gremlins do not show up in the dreams of my sleeping children. Because since they still pop up in mine sometimes, I know there is nothing more petrifying than that.

1 Mom Opened Up About Giving Birth to Twins With Down Syndrome, and It's Powerful

After Rachael and Cody Prescott made the decision to cancel Cody's vasectomy and try for a third baby, they had no idea it was a moot point. According to an at-home pregnancy test, Rachael was already a few weeks along. And to make matters even more exciting, the family learned they were expecting twin girls. That meant the couple's sons - Easton, 5 and Hudson, 3 - were going to have baby sisters to look after. The couple attended several doctors appointments to ensure the girls were healthy and developing normally, but then they got some unexpected news: both of their daughters had congenital heart disease and possibly Down syndrome.

"To have a child with Down syndrome is like discovering your best self and winning the lottery at the same time."

"A lovely nurse practitioner came to my bedside and first told me our girls did, in fact, have Down syndrome," Rachael told POPSUGAR. "My response was, 'Really?! Yay!' I actually hadn't remembered my own response, but she later visited to tell me that I had said this and that it was a relief to her to see our happiness, because it had not been what she was expecting."

Amazon's Casually Selling an 18-Foot Inflatable Grinch - Yep, That Means It's 2 Stories Tall

Look, I know $400 could go a long way. That much money could cover a few weeks of groceries, a chunk of holiday gifts for the family, a dozen nice bottles of wine, a plane ride . . . the list truly goes on and on. But sometimes, absurd yet glorious products present themselves to us, and though they may not have the most reasonable price tag, all budget-conscious reasoning flies out the window and the temptation is far too real to resist.

Such is the case with Hammacher Schlemmer's Two-Story Inflatable Grinch ($400). This enormous piece of holiday decor recently hit Amazon, and I can already hear the distant clicking sounds as parents everywhere smash that "Add to Cart" button. Hell, I'd probably splurge and buy one for myself too if I lived in the suburbs rather than an apartment building with no front yard.

The huge lawn ornamentation looks just like Dr. Seuss's grumpy green Grinch, with its sinister grin, red Santa outfit, and raggedy eyebrows. It even has those same long, skinny fingers, used to hold up a festive "Naughty or Nice" ornament. Measuring in at a whopping 18 feet tall, the inflatable is downright ginormous, as evidenced by how small the children in the above photo look while playing next to it. Considering how much hype has surrounded this year's remake of The Grinch, we have a sneaking suspicion this blow-up decoration will sell out on Amazon faster than Cindy Lou Who and the Grinch slid down Mount Crumpit in that toy-filled sled.

What 1 Mom Wants You to Know About the "Relentless Beast" That Is Type 1 Diabetes

Imagine that on top of everything else you do for your children each day, you also have to make countless decisions that mean the difference between their life or death. That's what it's like for parents of young children with type 1 diabetes - they are quite literally keeping their children alive every day and every night with the decisions they make about food choices and insulin levels.

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition in which the pancreas doesn't produce insulin, which is needed in order to get glucose (what your body uses for energy) from the bloodstream into the cells. In order to survive, people with type 1 diabetes require lifelong insulin therapy, including repeated daily blood sugar tests, constant monitoring of diet, and more.

One mom, whose oldest son, Ethan (pictured above with his continuous glucose monitor in his arm and the blue belt that holds his insulin pump), was diagnosed at age 2, took to Facebook to share the reality of managing the "relentless beast" of a disease in an eye-opening post in honor of Diabetes Awareness Month.

Stephanie's post highlights many of the misconceptions and misunderstandings people have about type 1 diabetes. Most striking is this: "Insulin is life support, not a cure. His devices help us, but we still have to be very vigilant and make countless decisions daily, without the help of a doctor."

"As a parent, I often cringe at the thought of being labeled as a helicopter parent, or being overprotective or overreactive," she told POPSUGAR. "If I lose focus for just a moment, it can make the difference between having a fun moment of play or my son lying unconscious on the ground. It's a very serious disease that can be deadly in the short term and cause devastating complications in the long term if not managed with vigilant care 24 hours a day."

"Insulin is life support, not a cure."

Stephanie added that "there are a lot of myths out there or assumptions people make. Oftentimes people offer a food or treatment they heard cures the disease, or think that feeding my child too much sugar caused it. There is no cure, and although diet can help manage it, nothing he ate caused this disease."

T1D affects about 1.25 million Americans, including Nick Jonas and former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler. While different, it's still often confused with type 2 diabetes, which is when the pancreas produces some insulin, but it's either not enough that the body needs or the body's cells are resistant to it. Symptoms for T1D can appear relatively suddenly and include:

  • Increased thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Bed-wetting in children who previously didn't wet the bed during the night
  • Extreme hunger
  • Unintended weight loss
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Irritability and other mood changes
  • Blurred vision

Now that her son is 5, Stephanie has gotten "better at rolling with the daily changes and making decisions on the fly," but it hasn't necessarily gotten easier. For Ethan, it's "all he has ever known," which makes him "very accepting of all the pokes and treatments he receives every day." He says of having T1D: "I can still have fun!" Homeschooling helps Stephanie keep Ethan's disease under control, but "inclusion is huge for a T1D family!" She added: "If you are unsure about how to help us be included in some activity or party, simply asking is a really big deal."

Why Didn't Anybody Tell Me: Deflated Breasts After Babies

There's no way to fully prepare for the weird ways in which your body changes after childbirth. Feet that grow a whole shoe size, hair that turns curly, hips that settle a little wider. And there's no way to predict which will happen to you once a baby (or two or three) has left your body - but it doesn't hurt to have a heads-up about the possibilities. Who needs to be blindsided by a linea negra that lingers for years? And no mom should have surprise stretch marks added to the long list of stressors that come with new motherhood. Which is why I'm giving you the real deal on breast changes after pregnancy. Whether you breastfeed or not, it's pretty much inevitable that your postpartum breasts won't resemble your prepregnancy ones. As in, be prepared to say goodbye to whatever fullness or perkiness you may have enjoyed before you got that positive pregnancy test.

Science confirms it: drooping and sagging get worse after each pregnancy.

If you start with a smaller bust, you might get excited when you grow a cup size (or two or three) during pregnancy, even if buying a new bra every month gets a little old. When your milk comes in, you could be even more thrilled by the prospect of cleavage if you previously had none to speak of. Or you could be cursing the fact that you can barely find a nursing bra that fits. Your breast size will go up and down much like the roller coaster that is postpartum hormones as you move from early pregnancy past childbirth. But eventually, the ride comes to a screeching halt at the very bottom of the track.

I'm sure some people don't experience such a dramatic change, but for me, my breast size tapered off dramatically in the months after I finished breastfeeding each of my babies. I thought I was in pretty good shape wearing some of my prepregnancy bras weeks after weaning, only to discover that a month or two later, I could barely fill an A cup. And cup size, whether you maintain your regular measurement or not, isn't even what you should be worried about - it's how the breasts seem to slowly deflate until you're left with little more than a flap of skin accentuated by an oddly shaped nipple. Motherhood is fun, right!?

Sure, you could be one of those lucky unicorns who experience larger-than-before breasts after babies, but my personal experience (and that of most of the moms I know) is the opposite. And science confirms it: drooping and sagging get worse after each pregnancy, which is probably why the majority of women report adverse changes in their breasts after they've had babies.

So along with all the other closet swaps you'll be making to accommodate your postpartum physique, you'll also have to find new bras. And don't be surprised if they resemble the sports bras you wore in middle school, because it's entirely possible your postpartum ladies will no longer fill any kind of cup. It's no wonder some women choose to undergo breast augmentation after baby! But whether you have surgery to spiff up your postpregnancy breasts or you learn to love what you've got left, I'm sure most women would agree that those little humans are absolutely worth whatever changes you endure.

Thanksgiving Is the F*cking Worst With a Toddler

Thanksgiving should be the perfect holiday.

It's completely acceptable to just bring a bottle of wine and a prepackaged pie or a hastily assembled hors d'oeuvres plate. There isn't a mountain of gifts to negotiate and no one expects you to put on a red suit and pretend to be a jolly old elf. Thanksgiving is, at its heart, about eating and drinking (two things I am exceptionally good at).

However, toddlers have to go and ruin all the fun, so my love for Thanksgiving has been temporarily put on hold.

Let's talk about start times. Before having a kid, the 2 o'clock meet up time was perfect because it meant I got to have a lazy morning where I would pretend to cook aka watch the Thanksgiving parade in my sweats. As a parent, I've already lived a full day by that point, and I'd really like to count on my son getting a good nap. Being expected to meet up early for dinner means that I am bringing a not-quite-well-rested toddler into a room filled with loud people. Of course, dinner can be later, but then we're running into his bedtime and gosh darnit, I do not want to deal with a grumpy child in a relative's house.

Beyond the time, there is nothing for a toddler to do. They get to play with cousins and siblings, but they're too young to watch or play football, and there isn't anything traditional to occupy their time.

Since the holiday is largely concerned with eating and drinking, notoriously picky toddlers don't make this day easy. I can be having a nice time, but then my son's mashed potatoes touch his turkey and now the whole meal is ruined. He's not even a superpicky eater, so I can only imagine what it's like for a parent whose child can't even stand the sight of most foods.

Sure, when they're older, we can plop them down at the kids' table and let them giggle to their heart's content, but now, with a 2-year-old, I can barely sit down and enjoy my meal.

I hope I'm wrong and this holiday goes smoothly and my son learns to appreciate the beauty of this holiday. I'd love for my toddler to wake up from his car nap refreshed, play well with his cousins, and happily eat a giant meal so that I can enjoy mine. If that comes true, I know what I'll be thankful for.

This Is the Exact Lipstick Shade Lupita Nyong'o Wore to the 2018 Governors Awards

In case you missed it, Lupita Nyong'o arrived at the 2018 Governors Gala in a striking stark-white, 1920s-style Tom Ford gown, but what made the look even more eye-catching was the electric purple lip she paired with it.

Creating Nyong'o's lip look wasn't born from just a few sweeps of a lipstick. First, a layer of Drama Liqui-Pencil ($23) - yes, eye pencil - in Ampoule (a creamy deep purple shade) was drawn across the actress's lips as a base. Then, Rouge in Love Lipcolor ($29) in Violette Coquette (a satin plum with blue tones) was sweeped above it, topped with a L'Absolu Lacquer Gloss ($26) in Positive Energy (an electric purple gloss).

It seems simple enough, but if you wanted to take the three-step process down to a one-stepper, we've pulled together some of the most dazzling purple lipsticks to re-create the look.

The Results Are In: These Are the Best Beauty Brands of 2018, According to Editors

You know how archeologists can identify up to 700 species of dinosaur just by looking at some fossils? Beauty editors have a similar skill set. . . except our medium is products. Still, the cosmetics industry saw some big innovations throughout 2018, so we've asked editors from top publications to share the best beauty companies that were actually worth the roar this year. So all your second-guessing? Ancient history.
