Loneliness Can Sabotage Your Health, but It's Never Too Late to Make New Connections

While alone time now and then is a real blessing (Hello, bathtub and good book!), feeling alone all the time can pose some actual risks to your health. "There is a difference between time alone and isolation," Kevin Gilliland, PsyD, executive director of Innovation360, told POPSUGAR. "The most savage of all symptoms that we struggle with is isolation and withdrawal; it is terrible for us."

He echoed the idea that stepping away from time to time is energizing and refreshing, but that isolation "shows up in a number of psychiatric illnesses such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse."

Erica Patel, MD, of the University of Southern California, expanded on this. "Loneliness negatively affects physical and mental health," she told POPSUGAR. "Multiple studies have shown increased rates of depression and frailty; poorer cardiovascular health and decreased immunity; and an increased risk of premature mortality in people suffering from loneliness."

The antidote to this - human connection - may seem simple enough, but can be daunting for those with distance between them and their loved ones (physical or emotional), or who are otherwise struggling in the relationship department. "The Harvard Study of Adult Development is one of the longest and most fascinating studies of adult life that has ever been performed," said Gilliland. "I hate to summarize 75 years of data, but it's actually rather simple: meaningful, loving relationships are the most important thing to our physical and mental health - more than diet and exercise."

So what can you do? As it turns out, a lot. And no, we're not going to leave you with the "Just go make some friends!" advice and call it a day. Here are tips that anyone can implement, from experts and those who have overcome loneliness themselves.

I Choose to Spend the Holidays Alone Every Year - This Is What I Want You to Know

A scene of family and friends laughing around a big dinner table, drinking cider, and cutting pie seems to be the vision that is elicited when we think of the holidays, but for some people with unconventional families, like myself, the holidays are much more complex than that. For instance, I usually like to spend the season alone.

Don't get me wrong: throughout elementary and middle school, the holidays were my favorite time of the year to spend with family. I loved going to my grandmother's for Thanksgiving, and enjoyed seeing all of my many cousins on Christmas Eve. I am the oldest of four, and I can still remember the towering stacks of wrapped gifts surrounding the decorated tree in our apartment's living room. I would become so full of anticipation before the holidays that when New Year's Day rolled around and another festive year came to a close, I would cry hysterically while packing the ornaments. The way my family celebrated the holidays was like a dream, and I loved every minute of it.

My perspective on the holidays began to change when I entered high school. My parents had a very tumultuous marriage and my mother decided it was finally time to file for divorce. My father moved out of the house, disappearing for long periods of time and showing up unexpectedly, usually not acting like himself. I still remember that first Christmas as a broken family. My mother, now a single mother of four trying to do her best, begged me to help put the presents under the tree while she put my baby brother to sleep. I still can feel the surprise I felt when I went down to the laundry room to get the boxes that were hiding in one of the storage closets. They were unwrapped, and from the neighborhood church toy drive. A hot rush of sadness washed over me.

The more time went on, the more distant I became from the holidays I once knew as a child.

The more time went on, the more distant I became from the holidays I once knew as a child. After my parents' split, my mother moved out of state with my three younger siblings, my father went in and out of rehab, and I ended up living with my grandmother. There were no more Christmas Eves full of paternal cousins and cake - my dad's side was also severed. I didn't spend the weeks leading up to Christmas furiously making wish lists with my sisters, and there were no presents underneath the tree. Thanksgiving and Christmas Day were usually spent at one of my maternal uncles', where I would always feel like the odd one out, or like I didn't belong. Instead of crying just when the holidays ended, I would feel a deep sadness from November through the new year. It became my new normal.

Thankfully, this changed when I graduated college and moved into my own apartment. I realized that since I had my own place to live year-round, I could decide for myself how I was going to spend the holidays. One year for Thanksgiving, I went to the Native American Museum in downtown New York City and walked around the South Street Seaport. One year for Christmas, I stayed in my apartment in Brooklyn cat-sitting and watching Christmas movies while eating a festive spread for one from Whole Foods. I can honestly say these were two of the most relaxing, joyous holidays I ever spent. This is when I realized I was happiest spending the holidays alone, and figured out that it healed me. The possibilities feel endless when you have full control.

Spending the holidays alone, to me, doesn't feel depressing. It feels liberating. I find that my mind feels more relaxed, and I have a better handle on my emotions. Plus, it brings me happiness creating my own little traditions.

It's my choice to be alone during the holidays, and I want you to know that if that sounds like something you'd prefer as well, it's totally OK to do it. If you're on the other end, and have extended an invitation to someone spending the holidays solo, and they politely decline, it's fine - you don't have to press it. I can't tell you how many times people say to me, "I feel so badly you spend the holidays alone, isn't that depressing?" I am always confused. Spending the holidays alone, to me, doesn't feel depressing; it feels liberating. I find that my mind feels more relaxed and I have a better handle on my emotions. Plus, it brings me happiness creating my own little traditions. Before I spent my holidays alone, I imagined all the alone time to feel emotional and heavy, but now I know it's the exact opposite.

There is such a stigma attached to doing things by yourself, especially during the holiday season. It is important to remember that everyone heals and works through the effects of their past experiences differently. There is no wrong or right way to go about doing things, and if it means someone would rather spend the holidays with just themselves, then maybe they prefer to.

With another holiday season already here, I am once again faced with the question: what will I do? And I am planning on spending it how I always do - however I'd like.

A Ridiculously Easy Way to Make Mashed Potatoes Healthier

Thanksgiving just doesn't feel like Thanksgiving if there isn't a huge plate of creamy mashed potatoes on the table. Filled with butter, cream, and more butter and cream, it's not exactly the most waist-friendly dish when you go in for seconds. A simple way to lighten up the dish without sacrificing flavor is to be picky about what variety of potato you use.

Instead of oft-used Russet potatoes, go for Yukon Golds or Yellow Finns. It might seem peculiar that switching out the type of potato makes a difference, but these smaller varieties are naturally creamy and sweet, and their skins taste like butter, which allows you to cut down on the amount of butter and cream you would normally add to the dish. When shopping for Yukon Golds or Yellow Finns, look for smaller ones that aren't much bigger than one inch in diameter. Also, the more yellow the potato, the better: it's the vitamin A contained in the skin that give these potatoes their golden hue. There's potassium in the skin too, so when making your mashed potatoes, don't peel! Since the skins are pretty thin in these potato varieties, they won't detract from the creaminess of your dish when you leave them on.

More healthy tips for your mashed-potato endeavors:

  1. For added nutrition, add sweet potatoes to mashed potatoes.
  2. Substitute reduced fat or lowfat milk for the cream, or try making them with evaporated skim milk instead.
  3. Cut back on salt by seasoning mashed potatoes with garlic, onion, and herbs.
  4. Omit dairy altogether and mash in chicken broth instead.
  5. To lower the carb counts in your potatoes, substitute some cauliflower for the potatoes in the recipe.

Ooh La La! Jennifer Garner and Her BF Are Reportedly Planning a Romantic Holiday Getaway

Love is in the air this holiday season - at least for Jennifer Garner, that is. According to Us Weekly, the 46-year-old actress is planning to spend the upcoming holidays with her new boyfriend, 40-year-old tech CEO John Miller. Even though Jen will reportedly celebrate Thanksgiving with ex-husband Ben Affleck and their three kids - 13-year-old Violet, 9-year-old Seraphina, and 6-year-old Samuel - she'll apparently reunite with John over the weekend.

The couple are also reportedly planning "a romantic getaway" for Christmas. "The relationship continues to be extremely serious," a source told the outlet. "John is head over heels in love with Jennifer."

Since separating from Ben in 2015 (they finalized their divorce in October), Jen moved on with John, and the two have reportedly been dating for seven months now. "Jen brings out the best in John, and he is the happiest he has probably ever been," Us Weekly previously reported. "It's a loving, healthy relationship." Earlier this month, the pair were spotted out together for the first time at the Dear Evan Hansen performance at the Ahmanson Theatre in LA.

If You're a Harry Potter Fan, We Definitely Need to Talk About That Crimes of Grindelwald Reveal

Warning! Major spoilers ahead for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

There is a lot to unpack in the latest installment of Fantastic Beasts. The Crimes of Grindelwald picks up only a few months after the events of the first film and follows the creation of the dark wizard's army. While our favorite cast of characters race to ensure Grindelwald doesn't secure the most important piece of his puzzle - Credence Barebone (Surprise, he's still alive!) and the power of his Obscurus - the dark wizard is seemingly always ten steps ahead of them. By the end of the film, he's able to convince more people to join his sinister scheme - including Credence. It's during the final moments of the film that Grindelwald drops the bombshell that Credence is actually . . . a Dumbledore!

Yep, you read that right. To be fair, there are several clues in the film that suggest we're going down this particular road. Credence's big journey during The Crimes of Grindelwald is his burning desire to know who he truly is. On the other side of the coin, we begin delving into the past of Albus Dumbledore, as it ties deeply with Grindelwald's rise to power. In two fairly pointed bits of foreshadowing, Albus mentions that his grandfather always said a phoenix will appear to Dumbledore family members in their moment of need, and avoids answering Leta Lestrange when she asks him if he's ever lost a brother. Instead he tells her that he's felt the loss of a younger sister and implies that it was the reason for his estrangement from Grindelwald.

Later in the film, Leta corrects everyone's assumption that Credence is her younger half-brother Corvus by revealing that he died during a trip to America with the family midwife. A young Leta, frustrated by the baby's incessant crying, switched her brother with another baby (Credence) when the ship carrying them began to sink. The lifeboat with Corvus and Credence's mother capsized and sank to the bottom of the sea, causing Leta's lifelong fear and guilt.

All of these seemingly random pieces of information come together when Grindelwald breaks the "news" to Credence that he's actually a Dumbledore. He gives him a wand, tells him that his brother wants to hurt him and gives him the name "Aurelius Dumbledore." This seems to fill Credence, er Aurelius, with new purpose, because he lets out a huge burst of magic that causes a nearby bit of mountain to explode. Obviously this revelation opens up a bunch of questions, since fans have only ever known there to be three Dumbledore siblings: Albus, Aberforth, and Ariana. And the timeline doesn't add up, for a lot of reasons. So, how is Credence actually related to the Dumbledores? Let's see if we can figure it out.

In celebration of the new film and getting the Ravens back together again, we had Hilarie, Danneel, and Antwon take POPSUGAR's "Only True Tree Hill Ravens Will Be Able to Master This One Tree Hill Quiz," where they had to remember everything from the Cracker Jack box gift Nathan gave Hayley . . .

A New The Lego Movie 2 Trailer Is Here, and It May Be Cuter Than the First One!

Although we've been counting down the days until The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part hits theaters in February 2019, the brand-new trailer just made us that much more excited for the Lego Movie sequel (the first trailer came out this Summer). Five years after the original flick premiered, Emmet, Lucy, and Batman are at it again! And this time, they need to protect Bricksburg from evil Lego Duplo invaders from outer space.

Watch as your kid's favorite characters "go where no brick has gone before" - according to the trailer - as they navigate unexplored galaxies and have a little fun along the way. Look out for familiar voices the second time around: Chris Pratt is starring as the hilariously positive Emmet again, Alison Brie will voice Unikitty, and Will Arnett will return as Batman. (Seriously, is there a better Batman voice out there?! Short answer: no!)

Parents should also keep their eyes peeled and their ears open for some new stars in the second installment. Tiffany Haddish is voicing Queen Watevra Wa-Nabi, and Arturo Castro will play Ice Cream Cone. All we can say is, this movie looks freakin' good!

This Hospital Photo Series Will Change Your Perspective on Gratitude

Every time Thanksgiving rolls around, people throughout the US cook up a turkey and their favorite sides to celebrate what they're truly thankful for. And while we love spending time with our families, parents who have children in the hospital or infants in the NICU don't always get to have that experience. In honor of Thanksgiving, staff members at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta walked the hospital halls asking "people big and small" what they're thankful for, and the answers were moving.

"For those who spend time in our hospitals, the season of gratitude can spark nostalgia for days when they, too, lived in a safe cocoon that masked the beauty of the little things many of us take for granted," Jessica Pope, the Public Relations Manager at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, told POPSUGAR.

"We heard nary a mention of vacations or things you buy at the mall."

Although it's easy for parents to get caught up in the hum-drums of every day life - like a child's low test score or tension at work - the photo series is meant to remind parents not to sweat the small stuff.

"We heard nary a mention of vacations or things you buy at the mall," said Jessica. "Instead, we heard about otherwise ordinary aspects of everyday life many of us take for granted: having taste buds that work, sleeping in your own bed, going to school, and breathing fresh air."

The hospital network enlisted the help of photographer Kate T. Parker to snap photos of the participants, and the results are beyond powerful. Scroll through to get a look at what each person has to be grateful for this year.

Stocking Stuffers That’ll Keep 4-Year-Olds Busy All Christmas Morning

A 4-year-old on Christmas morning could either play it totally cool and unwrap their gifts excitedly, playing with each one for a bit, or could rip through everything, not really paying attention and then losing interest right after (it happens). Of course they'll play with everything eventually, but instead of being intricate with your toy gifting or everything needing to be put together, we're going full-on stocking stuffer mode for our toddlers - aka small gifts that will keep them busy all morning long, with little-to-no assembly required. That way we can sip some coffee and maybe open a few gifts of our own.

Ahead, check out the 17 coolest stocking stuffer gifts for 4-year-olds (and if you're on a budget, here are a few of the cheap gifts we're getting our 4-year-olds this year).

21 Things That Inevitably Happen When You Travel With Kids During the Holidays

My family usually hits the road for the holidays, heading to the beach with my extended family for a vacation that only in the last year (when my son was almost 4 and my daughter was almost 7) began to feel like one. Before that, it was a stressful trip that took so much time and energy to execute that if it wasn't for that alluring Florida sunshine, I might not have gone.

Between buying and wrapping gifts early so I could ship them to our destination in time for Santa's arrival to renting baby supplies we couldn't fit in our suitcases to throwing our rules about screen time and sugar consumption out the window, traveling with kids for the holidays is a jolly sh*tshow. But hey, the holidays are all about togetherness, right? And nothing brings more togetherness than being stuck in a tiny condo for a week (or even better, a car for an eight-hour-plus drive) with your toddlers. If you're planning a trip with your kids over the holidays - to Grandma's house or somewhere more exotic - here are 21 things you need to prepare yourself for.

I'm Really Strict About My Kids' Screen Time . . . Except During the Holidays

I've been known to be a little controlling about my kids' screen time. We don't own tablets (not even my husband and I), we don't have cable, and my kids don't own any gaming devices. I'm old school regarding technology and very proud of it. But during the holidays, I throw all of those rules out the window. A huge part of the holiday season is relaxing and spending time together as a family, which sometimes means lounging around the TV for long stretches of time. So, if that means my kids get an unlimited amount of screen time during the holiday months, so be it. I don't beat myself up over it.

One of my favorite things during the holidays as a child was sitting in the family room with my parents and three rowdy brothers. We'd watch tons of Christmas movies, eat holiday cookies, and just be together. Those memories are so special, which is why I forget about my strict rules for a little bit to do the same with my own kids. No, I don't let them watch TV all day and not interact with anyone, but I let their bodies and minds relax. And since we're stuck inside a lot of the time due to cold weather, screen time gives me a break, too. I don't feel the need to think of indoor activities or make sure they're stimulated and learning 24/7. Christmas movies marathons are just fine.

Last year, we loved watching Elf, A Christmas Story, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and more together. We hunkered down in our pajamas, passed around the popcorn and cookies, and watched the classic Christmas tales unfold in front of us. My kids couldn't contain their laughter when Will Ferrell inhaled spaghetti mixed with syrup and candy, which made my husband and me burst out laughing, too. So while my kids were engulfed in a screen, we were also making precious family memories. And it's so worth it every year.

And if we head to one of our relatives' houses for the holiday, I let my kids watch movies there, too. Nobody sits hovered over their own screens. We make sure that individual devices are put away, and we all enjoy something together. It's fun watching a movie with the family when the ages range between 4 and 83. When a grandfather and his granddaughter can laugh hysterically at the same Christmas joke, then the TV can be on all day long for all I care. These years with my kids and my parents are precious, and if movies are the thing that helps them create priceless memories, I'm all for it.

Sometimes I forget that movies and television help create some of the best family moments and memories, both during the holidays and after. It's the togetherness of the screen time that truly matters. Well, that and the 6-foot elf in green tights running around New York City.

This Is What the Holidays Are Like When Your Partner Works Crazy Hours

When I was growing up, I was lucky enough that my whole family was together on holidays. We celebrated with my mom, dad, brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Eve. I always envisioned doing the same for my children when I became a mom. And while our growing family does partake in all kinds of fun holiday traditions every year, it's become our norm that one person is almost always absent.

My husband has a shift work job, so we rarely spend a lot of time together as a family during regular months, but during the holidays, the overtime shifts and extra jobs offer a very enticing paycheck he understandably has difficulty turning down. It's never easy for him to miss out on seeing our daughter's face light up when we have breakfast with Santa or miss our toddler's squeals of delight at a lit up Christmas tree, but we make the holidays work for us, whether that means celebrating without him or celebrating on a different day.

As difficult as it can be for me to explain to two little faces looking up at me and wondering why daddy's not there, it's just as hard for him to be at work knowing they're missing him.

I've continued the traditions we did when I was a child, like spending time with extended family on Thanksgiving, taking the kids to see Santa, picking the perfect Christmas tree, and baking cookies, but I've learned to just plan things as though my husband won't be around for them, then if he happens to be home for one or a few, it's that much better! I can't say I don't care when he's not there, but that's just life for us, and I make the best of it for myself and our kids. And when he is around for those moments, we put even more focus and appreciation on being together.

The biggest thing we had to get used to during the holidays was learning how to prioritize those traditions. Everyone's calendars fill up quickly, so we ask ourselves things like, "Which events does he really want to be a part of and which ones is he OK (and will the kids be OK with him) skipping?" At the top of our list is getting our Christmas tree with my brother and his family, which my husband and I have done since well before we were married with children. It's our favorite holiday tradition, so we always try to make it work. It's been really fun watching our families grow from two couples to two pair of moms and dads with four kids between us. It's memories like these where we can slow down and spend quality time together that make the holiday hustle worthwhile.

Then there's things like holiday crafts, breakfast with Santa, and cookie baking and decorating. While my husband would obviously enjoy seeing the kids dip their hands and feet in paint to create a holiday-themed work of art or watch them go nuts spreading far too much frosting on sugar cookies, he's content with pictures and videos. And the kids are usually focused enough to not really miss his presence. Sometimes we get our Christmas tree and it sits bare in the living room for days before we can all decorate together, and sometimes he sets it up and goes to sleep before his next shift and we decorate without him. When we go to church on Christmas Eve and have dinner with our extended family, there's an obvious hole at our table if he's working. We just try to take it one memory-making moment at a time.

One Christmas, he was working overnight and was scheduled to come home Christmas morning. He didn't want to miss seeing our daughter come down the stairs to her presents under the tree, but she wakes up before he gets home. So, I kept her in my room reading Christmas books and painting her nails until he came through the front door, and we all went downstairs together. This year, he'll come home Thanksgiving morning and need to go to sleep while our house fills with family and I entertain and prep our meal. But he'll wake up and enjoy turkey with us before heading back to work, so everybody wins.

It just takes a little tweaking and understanding on both our parts. As difficult as it can be for me to explain to two little faces looking up at me and wondering why daddy's not there, it's just as hard for him to be at work knowing they're missing him. We've become very good at working together to communicate our feelings. If there's an event I really want him to be at with us, I need to tell him it's important to me and not brush it off like it doesn't matter. Not being honest about my expectations or desires would leave me feeling resentful and him feeling confused about why I'm upset. And this is where our village comes in, too. We make plans with friends and other family members to ensure we're getting the most out of every moment with or without daddy. I have a network of friends whose husbands also work crazy hours, and it's extremely helpful and heartwarming knowing we are here for one another.

While I sit and go over dates and events for the holiday season wondering which my husband might be able to attend, it's not far from my mind that some parents do this alone all the time. Some children's parents are overseas, some have to split their time between two houses, and some may have lost a parent. So, during the holiday season especially, we make sure to count our blessings and remain thankful for what we do have. If we celebrate Thanksgiving on the last Wednesday of the month or Christmas a few days late, who cares? We still have each other.

This Dad's "Observations" About Christmas Shopping For Kids in 2018 Are Legendary

Clint Edwards, a father of three and author, isn't afraid to be candid about what it's really like shopping for your kids' Christmas gifts in 2018. In a hilarious Facebook post, he explained the pure hell that is mulling over your children's lists for Santa and deciding what exactly you can afford to buy them. In an effort to make Christmas shopping fun, Clint brought along his wife and framed it as a sort of date night, and we're still laughing out loud.

"After spending $13 on low-brow tacos my wife and I went Christmas shopping for our kids," he wrote. "This was our date for the month. This is parenthood. Sexy... I know. Here are a few thoughts, observations, and exaggerations on shopping for toys in 2018."

"My son asked for a shirt with a cat in space shooting lightning from its paws while eating a pizza and I actually scratched a hole in my head trying to understand," he said. "A surprising amount of toys this year have to do with poop and farts. What a time to be alive. Thanks YouTube for making everything come in a magic egg."

While the current toy "trends" are often bad enough, the stress of holiday shopping is how much stuff kids really ask for and what goes down when - and if! - they really get it.

"A surprising amount of toys this year have to do with poop and farts. What a time to be alive."

"Our son's wish list added up to just over $5,000 and I've never wanted to make someone live on the streets until now," Clint said. "Play-Doh was on everyone's list and we won't be getting any of it because I'd rather slam my head in a car door. Our daughters asked for a Barbie dream house to share so they can fight over a pretend house inside our real house. I didn't think my 11-year-old could possibly get lazier and then boom! He asked for a hover board."

He admitted that although the concept of a hover board is utterly ridiculous to him, his daughters had far more over-the-top requests.

"As if having real pets wasn't enough my daughter's asked for a stuffed dog that licks and twerks along with a walking unicorn who declares her love," he said. "Christmas morning's going to be like Narnia meets Miley Cyrus. $60? Seriously? Not today, L.O.L. Surprise! Our middle daughter asked for a bath bomb maker, a child sized foot-massager, and a children's press on nail kit. Turns out, I'm raising Paris Hilton."

At the end of the day, Clint and his wife narrowed down their kiddos' list to a few items they'll use, and they're already bracing themselves for their children's reactions: "We finally wilted down their lists to something they need, want, and can read. Bring on the tears."
