Nope, Drinking Coffee Won't Improve Your Metabolism - Here's What Actually Works
If you've ever looked up how to boost your metabolism, you've probably come across information telling you to eat more spicy foods, skip breakfast in the morning, and drink more coffee. You've seen the memes that say you aren't officially awake until you've had a cup of coffee, but when it comes to speeding up your metabolism, the caffeine isn't making much of a difference.
"I don't think there's any food that can consistently and sustainably increase your metabolic rate meaning the number of calories you burn," Dori Arad, PhD, RDN, CDE, the Mount Sinai Physiolab director, told POPSUGAR. "Everything that people usually use, like caffeine, for example - they may increase your metabolism, but for a very short period of time, and not if you drink coffee everyday," he said.
Instead of ordering a double shot of espresso with the hopes of naturally boosting your metabolism, Dr. Arad told us four things things you can begin to implement into your daily life that actually work. First, begin to incorporate strength training into your workout routine. Not only will you burn more calories, you'll build more muscle, requiring more energy, which means your metabolic rate will increase. You can get started with this four-week beginner's program.
Dr. Arad also said to eat more healthy fats and protein, because your body will have to work harder to process them. Finally, Dr. Arad said to decrease your sugar intake to prevent those calories from being stored as fat.

Trader Joe's Released Cauliflower Latkes Just in Time For Hanukkah, and We're Drooling
Trader Joe's has a knack for taking cauliflower and transforming it into something delicious: pizza crust, gnocchi, rice, and even tempura. But the beloved grocery store upped its cauli game just in time for Hanukkah and rolled out cauliflower pancakes in the frozen section.
Instead of traditional fried potato pancakes, these latkes are made with cauliflower, Parmesan cheese, and leeks, with a mix of brown rice flour, potato starch, rice flour, and egg white powder. They are lightly fried in sunflower oil to make them crisp on the outside and tender on the inside, and they would be delicious served with applesauce or sour cream or eaten like a hash brown and topped with ketchup. Plus, they're gluten-free!
Although potato is subbed out for cauliflower, these aren't exactly low-carb: each two-pancake serving has 170 calories, seven grams of fat, 21 grams of carbs, two grams of fiber, two grams of sugar, and seven grams of protein. But if you're a cauliflower fan looking for a delicious (and slightly healthier) spin on the holiday favorite, grab a box of these cauliflower pancakes while they're still in season. Each box has six pancakes and retails for $4.

These Dietitians Reveal How Many Calories to Eat on Intermittent Fasting and Still Lose Weight
Once you get used to going through long stretches of time without eating, intermittent fasting (IF) seems like a great way to lose weight and maintain it. There are other health benefits, too, such as improved digestion, more energy, and improved insulin levels. When your body goes through periods of fasting, it boosts the production of growth hormone, which helps you lose weight and gain muscle. While there are several different ways to do IF, the main tenets are still the same: periods of eating interspersed with periods of fasting.
But what do you eat during your feeding window? Technically, intermittent fasting just refers to when you eat, not how much you eat. "There are no rules about how much you should eat when you are not fasting," Julie Upton, MS, RD told POPSUGAR. "The diet was designed so that the fasting period creates the caloric deficit so that you can lose weight."
In fact, Kristen Mancinelli, MS, RDN, author of the book Jump Start Ketosis: Intermittent Fasting For Burning Fat and Losing Weight, said she doesn't tell her clients to count calories. Instead, she advises them to eat until they feel satisfied. Since people who follow the 16:8 (Leangains) plan typically only eat two meals a day, they will naturally eat fewer calories since once they have acclimated to the fasting period, they tend to not get hungry outside of their feeding window.
However some people think eating on IF gives them license to throw caution to the wind and eat as much as they want. If weight loss is your goal, you need to still be mindful of how many calories you are ingesting. After all, you can't fast for 16 hours and then eat 5,000 calories during your eight-hour feeding window and still expect to lose weight.
"Formally, calorie needs will remain the same as with any other diet plan, and differ based on the person's frame size, gender, starting weight, goal weight, and activity level," Kristen told POPSUGAR. To calculate what your calorie target is to lose weight, use this equation. Just make sure you aren't going below 1,200 calories a day. The only exception is if you are doing the 5:2 method: five days a week you eat normally (for example, 2,000 calories a day) and two days a week on your fasting days, you eat only 20 to 25 percent of your average calories (so 400 to 500 calories). Even if weight loss is your goal, you don't need to eat in a calorie deficit on your feeding days; those 2,000 calories should still yield weight loss results along with the other two fasting days a week. Over the course of the week, this creates and average daily calorie deficit.
Whether you are doing the 16:8, 5:2, or some other variation of IF, you should still eat whole, unprocessed foods during your feeding window. To reap the benefits of intermittent fasting, stick to fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and limited sugar and refined carbohydrates. Of course you can enjoy treats on occasion; just make sure they only make up 20 percent of your diet. Eventually, your body will get used to this way of eating and naturally crave healthy food.
"People are surprised that they don't gorge on their eating days or during their eating window after they've been fasting for a while," Kristen said. "One of the things intermittent fasting teaches you is how to notice and respond to hunger and satiety signals. So, rather than counting calories, practitioners can respond to their body's natural signals; it's very freeing!"

Feeling Stuffed Up? Try These 6 Natural Remedies to Ease Congestion
Despite your best efforts to stay healthy and germ-free, sometimes coming down with a cold (or worse, the flu) is just unavoidable during the ickiest months of the year. While many over-the-counter medications have proven effective in easing symptoms such as nasal congestion, we don't blame you if you don't want to deal with their potential side effects, such as drowsiness and fatigue. For that reason, we've rounded up six natural (and doctor-recommended) remedies to relieve that annoying stuffiness and help you feel better in no time. A happy bonus? You likely have everything you need at home.
The Secret to Making a Fitness Resolution You Can Stick to Is Actually Really Obvious
Chances are you've made losing weight or getting healthy your New Year's resolution - or part of it - at least one time in your life. And if you're like the majority of Americans, you start out strong on that goal, but by February, the steam is running out. You're not alone: 80 percent of Americans fail by February, and by March it's like, "What resolution?"
I've suffered that fate many times, but I still love the idea of making a New Year's resolution, and I'm determined to get it right in practice. That's why this year I'm focusing on making it for the long haul.
Typically, in the past, I have made a superficial resolution, like losing 10 pounds. To do that I've gone on sugar detoxes, smoothie cleanses, and Paleo diets to no avail. While I've had some short-term success, it has rarely carried over into a sustainable habit, and rarely have I reached my goal of 10 pounds. This year, though, will be different, because I've discovered the secret that I think will work for me.
Set the Bar Low
This year I'm not focusing on the quick fix to drop the extra holiday weight, but that's not to say I don't have high expectations for myself. Nutritionist Veronica Cardon agrees and advises that to be successful, start with short-term goals, spread out.
"Don't start with an overly ambitious goal such as 'I will lose 20 pounds in three months.' It's better to set up small-step objectives that make the milestones achievable and realistic, such as 'I will lose two pounds a month,'" Cardon says.
In order to achieve those goals, I'm starting by mapping out specific things I'll do each month. In January, I'm starting with giving up the creamer in my coffee and committing to making it to the gym three times a week.
Health coach Marcey Rader suggests mini habits throughout the year in order to create lasting habits that will help you achieve your resolution.
"In January, I'll increase my meditation by two minutes per day, and in February, I'll only get sugar in my coffee on weekends," Rader says. "In March, I'll stretch every day or do five Sun Salutations as an end to my workday and transition to personal time."
Rader also says this helps to keep us from feeling like we failed when we don't see immediate results or face a setback.
"It also helps to know it's only for a short time (30 days), which by then may have become a habit," Rader says. "If the habit doesn't work out, because maybe it's not as beneficial as we thought, we gave it the 30-day college try and can move on."
To keep yourself accountable, it's also a good idea to set reminders to stay on track. It's easy to get distracted and forget your goals, which is where you can use technology to your advantage. I'm starting by setting daily reminders for myself on my cell phone and planning my workout schedule ahead of time. I notice when I see the reminder, I'm more likely to feel compelled to stick to it. I'm also going to journal at the end of every week, tracking my progress (or lack thereof).
Here's to another year of setting resolutions . . . and this year, sticking to them!

What Betsy DeVos Doesn't Get About Sexual Assault on Campus
On Nov. 16, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos announced proposed changes to Title IX policy meant to bolster the rights of male students accused of sexual misconduct. The proposed changes include substantially narrowing the definition of sexual harassment, limiting schools' ability to investigate sexual assaults off-campus or school-owned facilities, and even allowing accused students to cross-examine those who accuse them, exposing survivors to being retraumatized by their attackers.
The disturbing underlying message of the Trump Education Department's policy proposals is that current Title IX policies have gone "too far" merely for making marginal progress to protect survivors on campus. To the contrary, evidence suggests current Title IX policy hasn't gone anywhere near far enough to protect survivors.
Despite Obama-era policy changes - which lowered the evidentiary standard for survivors reporting their assaults and required universities to resolve investigations of assaults in a timely manner - research has shown schools and universities remain hostile spaces for survivors. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, more than 90 percent of campus sexual assaults remain unreported. And, unfortunately, students have good reason to fear coming forward. In numerous documented cases, students who report sexual assaults or harassment have been punished or retaliated against by school administration.
"The proposed policy changes by the Trump Education Department ultimately signal whose experience on campus is the priority, and whose is worth sacrificing."
One high school student in Georgia who reported that she had been sexually assaulted was then suspended by her school for engaging in sexual activity on campus, according to a report in The Atlantic. At Brigham Young University, one student reported her experience being raped after taking drugs to the university, and told ABC she was disciplined by the university's Honor Code Office for drug use; other BYU students have reported similar experiences.
Fear of being blamed, socially ostracized, forced to talk to law enforcement, and perhaps mental health struggles can be factors in why survivors of campus sexual assault or harassment don't report. And all of these factors impact the living standards and academic performance of survivors. One 2015 report found that an estimated 34 percent of survivors of campus sexual assault, who are disproportionately people of color, LGBTQ+ people, and people with disabilities, drop out. In many cases, this is due to insufficient care, resources, and support from their schools in the aftermath of sexual violence.
In a personal essay for Broadly, Sage Carson, a survivor of campus sexual assault, recounts how experiencing rape while in college had affected her. "In the months following my assault, my grades steadily dropped. I isolated myself in my apartment and skipped most of my classes," she wrote. "My PTSD and anxiety caused me regular panic attacks when I tried to walk across campus, which made it impossible for me to finish any of my schoolwork." Carson, who was eventually forced by her socioeconomic situation to transfer to another college, recalls being forced to work with her rapist in the same small department, thus seeing him every time she went to class and triggering her anxiety and PTSD.
DeVos's proposed policy changes would only worsen survivors' exposure to their attackers or harassers. Specifically, DeVos would change the definition of sexual harassment from "unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature" to "unwelcome conduct on the basis of sex that is so severe, pervasive and objectively offensive that it effectively denies a person equal access to the school's education program or activity," which could dismiss many students' experiences with harassment and allow perpetrators to face no accountability.
Even without these policy proposals, which are meant to respond to a fear-mongering narrative of the falsely accused man, it's clear current Title IX policy is not doing enough to provide for the needs of survivors. Instead of working to reform the prevalent campus ecosystem, in which the vast majority of cases of sexual violence are not reported, the Education Department is promoting the false narrative that survivors have any reason to lie. In doing so, Trump and DeVos send a clear, discouraging message to those who may be on the fence about whether to come forward, considering most are unable to provide evidence beyond their testimony.
The proposed policy changes by the Trump Education Department ultimately signal whose experience on campus is the priority, and whose is worth sacrificing. As a result, campuses could soon become more dangerous and ill-equipped to provide for survivors than they already are.

Try to Keep Up With Kourtney Kardashian's Massive Designer Bag Collection
Kourtney Kardashian's handbag collection is, in a word, extensive. The eldest of America's most famous sisters has no shortage of designer duds at her disposal - and the same clearly goes for her arm candy. Seemingly every time she steps out, Kourtney is toting a bag from high-end hitmakers like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Chanel, and Fendi.
Kourtney's style is arguably the least over-the-top, compared to the rest of her siblings: she keeps it sexy but (mostly) wearable and carries handbags that veer on that same sleek and classic-meets-trendy side, often repeating her favorites. And aside from travel gear, she clearly prefers styles that are small to mini size. Whether a member of her entourage is carrying all her extra stuff or she manages to fit it all into her teeny purses, we may never know. What we do know: you're going to want to scroll through Kourtney's enviable assortment of bags ahead and shop some of her best investments for yourself.

Hailey Is So Bieber Right Now, She's Even Starting to Dress Like Him
It seems like Hailey Baldwin's (or, should we say Bieber?) name change on Instagram is all anyone can talk about. The couple, who confirmed they got married in mid-October, seems to be so in sync, we're nearly jealous. It's not just about their adorable posts and the quotes they give about each other, but their street style, which aligns more and more every day.
When Hailey stepped out in NYC following her famous handle tweak, we immediately saw "Justin" in the way she was wearing her TRE by Natalie Ratabesi trousers, slouchy and low, capped off with sneakers, not high heels. Hailey kept things completely neutral, working an Aritzia sweater, Maison Margiela trench, and Jennifer Fisher hoops, but those pants spoke loud and proud.
The hip slung look is definitely sticking around, and we have proof below that Justin and Hailey support you investing in cool khaki slacks like theirs. Just make sure you finish them with trainers, OK?
