This Is How We're Saving Up For a Big Family Trip
If you've ever been to Walt Disney World, you know that it's not only the happiest place on earth, but also one of the most expensive. This Spring, we'll be taking our first vacation there as a family of 5, so, as you can imagine, it's taking an exorbitant amount of planning.
When we decided to go, money-saving tips were the first thing we researched. We've already booked one of their value resorts, passed on the pricey dining plans, and settled on driving instead of flying. But since we'll be there on our daughter's fifth birthday, we know we definitely won't be able to skate by without a visit to the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique or a few character dining experiences. Then there's the souvenirs that I'm sure our three children will need (we'll let each of them choose one). All of those extras will undoubtedly cost a pretty penny. Here are three slightly unconventional ways we're saving up for them.
1. Making Every Penny Count
Literally. Since we almost exclusively use cash in our household, we end up with a lot of change. All of that change makes its way to a giant water cooler bottle. We'll roll it into our car and cash it in at our bank right before our trip. There's no telling how much we'll have, but the fact that it's been building for over a year now with another several months to go leaves me hopeful that we'll get at least a couple hundred dollars.
2. Ibotta
If you haven't downloaded the Ibotta app, then drop everything and do it right now. It requires minimal effort, and I've earned over $300 since joining two years ago. How fast or how slow your earnings accumulate depends on how you use it (I don't let it change my shopping habits, so I tend to earn slowly), and you can get lots of bonus cash for mobile shopping and referring your friends. That money can be used to purchase electronic gift cards or transferred directly to your Paypal or Venmo account. With our upcoming trip, I'm letting my earnings build, and I'll withdraw the money right before we go. By the time Spring rolls around, there should be at least $100 in my account to use for some small souvenirs for each of our kids.
3. Credit Card Points
As a rule, we don't rely on credit cards. However, certain things (like my gym membership, online purchases, and travel expenses) require them, so we're accumulating points. Our credit card allows us to use our points toward our balance, which is exactly what we'll do once we purchase our park tickets. Since we don't use our cards much, we certainly won't have enough points to cover the cost of our tickets in their entirety, but something is better than nothing!

This Is What the Holidays Are Like When Your Partner Works Crazy Hours
When I was growing up, I was lucky enough that my whole family was together on holidays. We celebrated with my mom, dad, brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Eve. I always envisioned doing the same for my children when I became a mom. And while our growing family does partake in all kinds of fun holiday traditions every year, it's become our norm that one person is almost always absent.
My husband has a shift work job, so we rarely spend a lot of time together as a family during regular months, but during the holidays, the overtime shifts and extra jobs offer a very enticing paycheck he understandably has difficulty turning down. It's never easy for him to miss out on seeing our daughter's face light up when we have breakfast with Santa or miss our toddler's squeals of delight at a lit up Christmas tree, but we make the holidays work for us, whether that means celebrating without him or celebrating on a different day.
As difficult as it can be for me to explain to two little faces looking up at me and wondering why daddy's not there, it's just as hard for him to be at work knowing they're missing him.
I've continued the traditions we did when I was a child, like spending time with extended family on Thanksgiving, taking the kids to see Santa, picking the perfect Christmas tree, and baking cookies, but I've learned to just plan things as though my husband won't be around for them, then if he happens to be home for one or a few, it's that much better! I can't say I don't care when he's not there, but that's just life for us, and I make the best of it for myself and our kids. And when he is around for those moments, we put even more focus and appreciation on being together.
The biggest thing we had to get used to during the holidays was learning how to prioritize those traditions. Everyone's calendars fill up quickly, so we ask ourselves things like, "Which events does he really want to be a part of and which ones is he OK (and will the kids be OK with him) skipping?" At the top of our list is getting our Christmas tree with my brother and his family, which my husband and I have done since well before we were married with children. It's our favorite holiday tradition, so we always try to make it work. It's been really fun watching our families grow from two couples to two pair of moms and dads with four kids between us. It's memories like these where we can slow down and spend quality time together that make the holiday hustle worthwhile.
Then there's things like holiday crafts, breakfast with Santa, and cookie baking and decorating. While my husband would obviously enjoy seeing the kids dip their hands and feet in paint to create a holiday-themed work of art or watch them go nuts spreading far too much frosting on sugar cookies, he's content with pictures and videos. And the kids are usually focused enough to not really miss his presence. Sometimes we get our Christmas tree and it sits bare in the living room for days before we can all decorate together, and sometimes he sets it up and goes to sleep before his next shift and we decorate without him. When we go to church on Christmas Eve and have dinner with our extended family, there's an obvious hole at our table if he's working. We just try to take it one memory-making moment at a time.
One Christmas, he was working overnight and was scheduled to come home Christmas morning. He didn't want to miss seeing our daughter come down the stairs to her presents under the tree, but she wakes up before he gets home. So, I kept her in my room reading Christmas books and painting her nails until he came through the front door, and we all went downstairs together. This year, he'll come home Thanksgiving morning and need to go to sleep while our house fills with family and I entertain and prep our meal. But he'll wake up and enjoy turkey with us before heading back to work, so everybody wins.
It just takes a little tweaking and understanding on both our parts. As difficult as it can be for me to explain to two little faces looking up at me and wondering why daddy's not there, it's just as hard for him to be at work knowing they're missing him. We've become very good at working together to communicate our feelings. If there's an event I really want him to be at with us, I need to tell him it's important to me and not brush it off like it doesn't matter. Not being honest about my expectations or desires would leave me feeling resentful and him feeling confused about why I'm upset. And this is where our village comes in, too. We make plans with friends and other family members to ensure we're getting the most out of every moment with or without daddy. I have a network of friends whose husbands also work crazy hours, and it's extremely helpful and heartwarming knowing we are here for one another.
While I sit and go over dates and events for the holiday season wondering which my husband might be able to attend, it's not far from my mind that some parents do this alone all the time. Some children's parents are overseas, some have to split their time between two houses, and some may have lost a parent. So, during the holiday season especially, we make sure to count our blessings and remain thankful for what we do have. If we celebrate Thanksgiving on the last Wednesday of the month or Christmas a few days late, who cares? We still have each other.

I'm Pretty Good at Defending My Point, Thanks to This 1 Thing My Mom Always Had Me Do
The word no. I hated hearing it. When I was in sixth grade and wanted to dye my hair half cherry red and half blue, and later, when preteen angst knocked me off my feet and I wanted to attend every party and afterschool activity where my crushes hung out, I definitely didn't want to hear it then.
But like many of these stories go, I had parents. And those parents shook their heads left and right when I asked to stay out late, go to someone's house they'd never met, or get a fifth piercing in my ear (pro tip: ask grandpa). What was unique about these formative years, however, was the way my parents handled my asks. While the word "no" carried weight, it wasn't the end of the line. Mom would often see the frustration in my face, the wrinkles in my forehead, and say, "Convince me otherwise."
Then it was my turn. I'd head to my room, rip out notebook paper, and get to work. First I'd write out my mom's response - why my mom said no. Then I'd come up with a rebuttal. I'd write that down next. Then I'd draw a thick line, one to separate mom's feelings from mine. Underneath the harsh marker I'd write why I should be able to do the thing I was asking about. And next to it I'd guess what my mom would say back and write that down. This would force me to think ahead, and to think arguments through in my head all the way until the finish when there were no more ways to slice it.

At that point, I'd take my wordy presentations back into my parents' room and make my argument. I'd state what I believed their issue was, and why I thought it was wrong. Then I'd make my argument, and include why they likely thought it wasn't a good enough reason. Then, I'd present them with a compromise, pointing to my presentation. So if the entire visual was about me wanting to go to a party at a kid's house they'd never met, maybe the compromise was that I'd call them every hour to check in and let them know I was safe. If the ask was reasonable enough, and my argument was sound, it worked fairly often.
This behavior - constantly thinking ahead about what the other person might say next - sharpened the way I disagree with people. Now, when I argue as an adult, I don't only focus on what I want or need. I have empathy and consider what the other person wants and how they feel. I can visualize a way in which conflicting desires coexist. It just requires some paper and pen.

A Substitute Teacher Told Kids That Santa Wasn't Real, and Ohhh Boy
A substitute teacher from Montville, NJ, has landed herself in hot water after telling a classroom full of first graders that Santa isn't real. Michael J. Raj - the principal at the school in question - sent a letter home to parents explaining exactly what happened "regarding [the teacher's] poor judgment in making this proclamation."
"During the course of the day, a substitute teacher apparently announced to the class that Santa was not real," wrote Michael. "As a father of four myself, I am truly aware of the sensitive nature of this announcement." He added that the letter was sent home, "so that you are aware of the situation and if the conversation comes up at home over the next few days you can take appropriate steps to maintain the childhood innocence of the holiday season."
Whether or not your children's substitute teacher makes the f*ck-up of the century or they catch wind of it from the kid down the block, tell them that, "When you stop believing, that's when Santa stops coming" to squash any lingering doubt. Works like a charm.
I Believed in Santa Until 5th Grade and I’m Not the Least Bit Embarrassed
The first time my lanky Jewish father put on a red Santa suit and knocked his slender frame throughout the house, I must have been a toddler. He wore all of the key accessories one would come to expect of Santa - the hat, the red suit, and the long, unmistakable beard. I couldn't get over his eyes, though. "Santa's eyes look just like daddy's," I'd told my mom the first time I met Mr. Clause.

While Dad's showmanship eventually petered out and he became the Skipping Christmas-reading man I'd later come to know, I was impressionable and believed that I'd met the real Clause once. I needed to nurture our relationship somehow.
I decided to write him letters. Second grade. Third grade. Each December I penned notes to the legend, asking him for Christmas presents, and then, in fourth grade, buried at the bottom of a note - I smile remembering this - I asked him to "Please make Michael Anderson like me." Capital P. Yes, as adolescent hormones were getting the best of me, Santa was the only person well suited to deal with my pre-teen heartache. Evidently I mistook Santa for Dear Abby.

Fifth grade was the tipping point. After seeing the leggy Suzanne Somers shill her miracle-working Thighmaster on TV, and convincing myself that if I had one, Michael Anderson would most certainly requite my love, I wrote to Santa my mom and asked for one. They could only be purchased over the TV, I explained, so he'd need to put the order in quickly. Along with my purchase order came another note. I plead with him to make this the year that Michael liked me back. And, if he could, "please also get my mom this pretty jewelry box she saw on QVC because she really deserves it."
Boom. That's how you unknowingly lay in the guilt. Up until that point in my career as a devout Santa-believer, my mom ate these letters up, getting a pure kick out of how much weight I'd given to Dad's Santa shtick. When that Christmas came and went, and a classmate made a flip comment about how no one believed in Santa anymore, I finally went to my mom for the truth.
She couldn't bare to lie to me any longer. Having become so mature and self-aware that I was using Santa's ear to ask him to buy presents for my mom made her feel immense guilt. Plus, I was now starting to ask for things that couldn't be purchased easily (how the heck was she going to get a Thighmaster?). This all told her that the right thing to do was to sit me down for a talk.
She sat me down on the couch, took a deep breath, and softy placed her hands on my knees. "I already have a jewelry box, honey."

I spread a thin layer across my face and my neck and thought that it truly felt like spreading a dessert topping across my skin. Then, I switched off my light, laid on my back, and fell asleep.
Of course, I woke up face down, but I was surprised to find no greasy residue on my pillow. My skin felt extra bouncy and smooth, and it looked visibly brighter. It was so hydrating that if I didn't already know where my dry patches typically were, I would never have been able to guess. What was most impressive was that the really dry area around my lips that started out red (irritated by the cold weather in New York City) had gone down significantly - to a point where it was no longer sensitive when I placed makeup on top of it.
Glamglow hid a miracle cream inside the jar that - if I didn't know any better - could have been mistaken as lube. Good thing I read the directions.

Mariah Carey's music video for "Honey" was the first thing that ran through my head when the Anastasia Beverly Hills Amrezy Highlighter ($28) - the brainchild of beauty blogger Amra Olević - first dropped last January. Strange, I know, but the highlighter is just as dreamy as the '90s video, with its waves that shift from champagne to honey-gold etched on the surface.

When I tried it, I swirled my favorite fluffy highlighter brush against the ripples and swept it across my cheekbones. Since the pigments are so finely milled, the highlight isn't glittery - it isn't shimmery. Somehow, it looked almost invisible on my tan skin until the light hit it (that's when I noticed the blinding, high-impact shine).

I Finally Tried the Magnetic Mask All Over Instagram, and the Results Were Magical
Skin care can be tricky. With the many interesting trends out there, it's hard to decide which ones are worth spending the time and money on. Trust me, I've been there. I was faced with this dilemma when I heard of the magnetic mask trend - you know, the movement that started when Madonna used one on her butt - but I thought if the mask is good enough for the Queen of Pop, it should be more than enough for me.
I decided to test the Onyx Youth Magnet Mask ($71), which has antiaging oils and minerals found in a Korean volcano - very cool stuff. The kit includes the mask, its applicator, a magnetic wand that is meant to lift the gray cream straight from the skin, and plastic covers that slip onto the tip of the magnet to make for easy cleanup.
Mask application was easy and fast. I used the boat-shaped applicator to spread a thin layer on my face (this helped me spread the mask more evenly and prevented me from getting my hands dirty).
