Mom Reveals a Rare Perspective on Husband Dying of Cancer: "We Have the Chance to Really Say Goodbye"
Cancer is a devastating disease - to say it ruins lives is an understatement. For one family, the illness will soon rip a beloved father from his wife and young child. But their perspective on life - and death - is one of hope and, surprisingly, appreciation.
Scott and Anne Sutton met as middle school students in Pennsylvania, but it wasn't until they reconnected at a mutual friend's wedding in 2011 that they fell in love. They were engaged two years later, they got married on Valentine's Day the next year, and it wasn't long before they welcomed their son, Alec, who is now 3 years old.
"It's really hard to find that balance of living life and not letting cancer take every single day away from you."
All the while, Scott has had medical issues - he has a hereditary condition called Von hippel-Lindau, and in 2009, doctors found a neuroendocrine tumor in his lung. They removed the bottom two lobes of that lung, and as Scott told POPSUGAR, "we had hoped that would be the last time anyone ever told me I had cancer."
Unfortunately, in January 2016, after months of lower back pain, he received even more upsetting news: he had another tumor, this one inoperable. "More tests would soon show that I also had neuroendocrine tumors in my liver, brain, and other parts of my bones," he said. It was deemed Stage 4. His son was just 8 months old at the time.
Throughout the next few years - which involved traveling around the world, including a stay at a hospital in Switzerland, to find a solution - the Suttons still managed to live a life similar to those of any other new parents, with a remarkable exception: Scott, along with his best friend, Alec Traub, wrote and published a children's book called I Love You Like . . . The story - illustrated by a cartoonist for the Garfield franchise - follows a grasshopper father explaining how much he loves his son. It's a sweet concept on its own, but it takes on profoundly deeper meaning knowing that it will one day serve as a reminder to young Alec of his late father's love.
Last month, Scott returned home from a three-week hospital visit, and he was given hospice care. "The doctors have given us an estimated time frame, and my goal is to have as many normal days at home with Anne and Alec as I can," he said.
With an honest perspective that in many ways is a rarity to witness, Scott, Anne, and their friend Alec opened up to POPSUGAR about what this experience has been like for them.
On Life With Their Son
From the beginning, when Alec was born in May 2015, Scott was "our rock," Anne remembered.
"Alec had colic," she said. "Cried and cried and cried. When I was sad that Alec was sad, Scott would take a photo of Alec crying on his phone and make it into a meme to make me laugh. He would send me photos of the vomit Alec spewed all over him while I was running an errand, to show that, 'hey, he does it to me, too.' I know I'm a better mom because of having Scott as my teammate."
And as Alec got older, his personality truly came into its own.
"Anne knows how I want to be remembered as a father, and I know she won't let me down."
"Alec is full of energy, always excited to see what's around the next corner," Scott recalled. "Incredibly empathic. Eats anything, including black olives. Seems to have a scary good memory - you can't pull anything past him you might have promised him a week ago. There's so much talent in there waiting to come out."
For Scott, Alec has been "the biggest joy of my life" and is "still excited" for all the amazing things to come in his future.
"My hope is that he'll do some of the things as a little boy that I did with my parents - I had a great childhood, so I'm excited he'll have one, too," Scott said.
On Writing a Book For His Son to Remember Him By
It's only a slight coincidence that Scott and Anne's son shares the same name as Scott's longtime friend, Alec. "It's sort of true we named our son after him," Scott said with a chuckle. "When Anne suggested the name as her number one choice, I immediately thought of Alec Traub and thought, 'would it be weird to name my son after a friend?' But he's a role model of a friend, and that's when I just knew it made sense."
In fact, for 15 years, the two had a silly tradition involving text messages that kept them close despite living in different states.
"Scott and I are two guys who never shied from telling one another how much we miss, love, and care for the other. One day, he randomly texted me, 'I miss you like the grasshopper misses grass . . . and hopping,'" Alec recalled. "I loved it, so then I texted him back, 'I miss you like the anteater misses ants . . . and eating.' It became our own fun, unique way to say I miss you."
When Alec visited Scott in Pittsburgh following his diagnosis in 2016, the two came up with the idea for a book.
"We were sitting all together talking about Scott's health and how much he wanted to be able to do something to leave behind for little Alec," Alec said. "We then immediately came to the idea of putting those text messages together and creating something for him. We had no idea where to go from there, but we knew it was something we couldn't afford to leave as just a cool idea. Time wasn't necessarily on our side."
So, they got to work. They watched YouTube videos about how to write a children's book, found a professional illustrator, and held Skype meetings until they were were ready to self-publish this past July. They've since sold more than 2,000 copies of I Love You Like . . ., and all of the profits go toward Alec's college fund. There's even a dedication to Scott's son, one of which any parent can relate: "For my son, Alec Sutton, who makes every day an adventure. Thank you for asking, 'Why?' each of the 1.4 million times. I love you buddy."
Selfishly, Alec is thankful for the book because, in their year working on it, the experience brought him and Scott even closer and taught him about taking something negative and flipping it.
"We turned that story into something so positive - for all of us," he said. "But if in the end, all it ended up being was something that I could create with Scott and that he could have for his son, then that was more than enough."
On Not Letting Cancer Change His Outlook
It's hard to imagine continuing on with the day-to-day once you receive a cancer diagnosis, but Scott was determined to keep a positive outlook.
"Even with everything that has been going on with me, there have been so many great things in my life worth living for," he said.
He and Anne share a few mottos - "always forward" and "worry when we must worry" to name a few - that, Scott said, "afforded us to live in the moment and truly just enjoy our time as a family."
"There are no bad memories. We did as much as we could together."
That time has included taking his son fishing for the first time, teaching him soccer, and even taking him to "Mickey's house," otherwise known as Disney World.
"There are no bad memories," he said. "We did as much as we could together, often packing the weekends full of activities with Alec and friends and family. We've built snowmen, we've gone minigolfing, I watched Alec ride a pony, we've seen the ocean . . ."
When asked what he hopes his son will remember most about him, he struggled to find words. "Anne knows how I want to be remembered as a father, and I know she won't let me down."
Her response?
"I won't," she said. "And I know there are family and friends who will share stories, too. Over the recent weeks, we've had friends who have visited who have promised Scott they will take Alec hunting with them and their own sons some day; other friends who live in other states promising that our kids will grow up knowing each other and knowing their dads were good friends."
On What They Wish Others Really Knew
Like any other typical parent, Scott knows that familiar feeling that there's always something more important to do, that we should be doing something productive like "taking care of that email in your inbox that needs done right away." But, he said, "what's really important is right in front of you. You have to try to enjoy every day with your family."
For Anne, she doesn't yet feel ready to reflect on what she's learned through her experience with Scott. But she did note that she now understands that there are appropriate times to be sad and grieve and times where you simply shouldn't.
"It's really hard to find that balance of then living life and not letting cancer take every single day away from you," she said. "We make a good team and worked through those feelings together, always making sure we were on the same page."
"We have the chance to really say goodbye in a special way. I don't want to say that we are lucky, because that doesn't seem quite right, either."
She even shared a rare upside to these years spent fighting cancer alongside her husband. Following the tragic shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue that killed 11 people, Anne realized her family was given an opportunity that they've made sure not to squander.
"We've obviously been very sad since coming home on hospice care, working through a host of emotions," she said. "But when I heard the news stories of those innocent people losing their lives so unexpectedly, I sat here that day feeling even more sad for them. Today, even though we know what is to come, we know what's coming."
She continued: "Scott and I have the opportunity to reminisce, to laugh with each other while watching Alec play, to make sure as many friends and family visit as possible. We have the chance to really say goodbye in a special way. I don't want to say that we are lucky, because that doesn't seem quite right, either. Maybe just that it's not lost on us - the magnitude that there are people who didn't have the same opportunity that we do right now. We owe it to them to make the most of it."

David Beckham Is Shamed Again For Kissing Harper, and This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things
The Beckham family is known for being very affectionate with one another in public, and it's part of the reason we love them all so much (especially the four siblings, who constantly show love for each other all over social media). However, some people criticize Victoria and David for just how much love they show their kids, which is essentially why we can't ever have nice things.
Back in July 2016, Victoria shared an adorable snap of herself and Harper kissing on the lips in the pool, which critics called inappropriate and "gross" (first of all, it's so gross to call a parent who loves their child gross). Then in June 2017, David posted a similar photo with Harper and received similar flak, along with the added commentary from some on why it was "more wrong" because they're the opposite sex.
However, it doesn't appear the Beckhams are much affected by the people criticizing their beautiful family from behind their phones - not that we ever expected them to be! - and continue to share affectionate snaps often. Case in point: David's Nov. 26 selfie of him and 7-year-old Harper at an ice skating rink. In the adorable photo, Harper is sporting fluffy earmuffs and David is kissing her on the lips (though it took me several minutes to decipher whether or not the man pictured was David or Brooklyn, because they now look like twins and David isn't aging). It's truly such a cute moment captured that the all-too-predictable hateful comments piling up under it might as well not exist.
In a world that is so quick to anger and judgment, it's nice to see the Beckhams hold onto love and express how they feel toward one another so frequently - we could all stand to take a page out of the family's book.

Kate Hudson Is Ready to Jump Back Into Working Out, Because She Wants to "Be Around For a Long Time"
After giving birth to a sweet daughter in October, Kate Hudson is ready to get back into her old routine. In an Instagram post she shared on Nov. 29, she gave fans an update on how the first few months with Rani Rose have been going.
"So . . . here we go! The routine with our baby is getting more familiar and I'm ready to start taking a little time in the day focusing on myself," she wrote. "For me that means my health. Why? Because I wanna be around a long time for these three kiddos of mine."
The 39-year-old actress was quick to point out that she knows how hard juggling a job and raising a family can be, but she's going to try her best.
"I know that some are curious about what that means and for all you moms (whether working or not working moms) it is the most challenging thing in the world to balance kids and personal time," Kate said. "Let's be honest, kids take the number one position and it's haaaaard to make the time for yourself."

Light-Up Beard Ornaments Have Arrived, and Ho-Ho-Holy Sh*t, I Can't Stop Laughing
Scruffy facial hair should be nurtured with special oils, washes, or balms, but ya know what else it deserves? To be decorated with Christmas ornaments for the holidays - and yes, this is possible, all thanks to one Utah-based company called Beardaments. The geniuses behind the brand previously made us LOL by selling teeny-tiny beard baubles, and this year, they've released a light-up version to take the festive vibes to a whole new level.
These spherical, glow-in-the-dark ornaments are adhered to mini clasps meant to be attached to strands of facial hair (or chest hair, leg hair, or really any kind of hair, for that matter). Each pack includes 16 multicolored baubles, six of which feature built-in lights that shine bright for all to see. Something tells us that if Buddy the Elf had a bushy beard, he'd totally rock these every day of the year, along with his green jacket and yellow tights.
Yes, we're fully aware that the idea of illuminated beard bling is downright absurd, but we can also hardly deny that Beardaments' latest creation would be a hysterical gag gift for any hairy-faced pal or relative - especially if paired with an ugly Christmas sweater. Keep reading to see more photos of the light-up beard baubles in all their Buddy-approved glory.

I Made My Husband Try This CBD Bath Bomb, and Here's What Happened
Mercury is in retrograde until Dec. 6, which means you might be desperately in need of a little TLC. While we're busy blaming the planetary shift for all of life's little inconveniences - Car broke down? Mercury. Fight with your best friend? Mercury. Laptop acting up? MERCURY! - there's a limited-edition bath bomb that might help soothe your worries.
Life Elements has released the Mercury Retrograde Bath Bomb ($26), a special addition to the brand's existing collection of CBD bath bombs. While their products usually range from 50 mg to 200 mg of CBD, the Mercury Retrograde Bath Bomb contains a whopping 250 mg, meant to reduce muscle soreness and inflammation, curtail stress, and potentially lessen the effects of eczema and psoriasis.
While CBD-infused products have been proven to help with anxiety and provide pain relief, it's just not my thing. My husband, however, was all too happy to hop in the tub to test out this bad boy. He had never used a bath bomb before (amateur) and didn't really know how it worked. I let him toss it in the steaming water, because I'm generous like that.
In addition to the baking soda and citric acid that create fizziness, the bomb itself is crafted with grapeseed and olive oils, arnica, eucalyptus, witch hazel, and, in a Biblical twist, frankincense and myrrh. None of these details actually mattered to my husband, who has suffered from chronic back pain since his days playing football and lacrosse in high school. He's not typically a "bath guy," but after 25 minutes in the CBD-packed tub, he swore his muscles felt calm - and so did his mind.
Before he hopped in for a soak, he had been stressing about everything we had to do before we flew home for Thanksgiving the next day. The anxiety of packing, cleaning up the house, and lining up care for our animals was wearing on him. And then . . . it just wasn't. He slept really well that night, and though I'm not a fan of the dried flowers left all over my tub, I am a huge fan of a calm, cool, collected spouse.
Olivia Wilde Reveals How Motherhood Changed What "Self-Care" Means to Her
Crystals lined the shelves, a subtle scent of eucalyptus wafted in the air, and Olivia Wilde emerged, smiling warmly, fresh-faced and glowing from a facial at the True Botanicals boutique. Yes, you can book a facial right at the brand's new San Francisco flagship, which feels more like a self-care sanctuary than a store. That's exactly where our conversation went, too. I was lucky enough to get some time with Wilde ahead of the store opening to chat about her involvement with the nontoxic beauty brand and its founder Hillary Peterson, and while celebrity endorsements can often feel disingenuous, I was struck with her palpable enthusiasm for the products as a form of self-care.
As we talked, Wilde revealed how she connected with the brand and what made her stick around, because while pregnancy and motherhood certainly opened her eyes to the importance of what we put on our skin, efficacy is always the goal. Wilde also vouched for the results of the products just as much as she does its nontoxic, natural approach. What's more, she revealed her favorite products (spoiler: she has a lot), starting with just a couple that might convince you to shake up your own beauty routine.
Read on for our complete interview, then shop a few of Wilde's picks.
Maisie Williams Dyed Her Hair Pink For Winter, Because of Course
Winter is coming, and to celebrate, Maisie Williams has debuted shoulder-length, cotton-candy pink hair - and we love it.
The 21-year-old, who played Arya Stark on Game of Thrones, posted an Instagram Story on Thursday of her with her new hair color in loosened curls, as she smiled into the camera. She still has her bangs from her last chop.
Williams had been experimenting with her hair since her departure from the show. This past August, she chopped her shoulder-length, deep brown hair into a '70s-inspired layered look with thick, straight-across bangs. She's kept the bangs but traded in the color for something sweeter.
7 Beauty Products For People Who Hate Glitter but Still Want to Stand Out
'Tis the season to douse yourself in glitter, right? From eye shadows and lip glosses to mascaras and a festive gold polish, ahead are seven of our favorite beauty products for the people who don't love glitter - but still want to stand out.
These Are the Best Royal Beauty Moments of 2018 - Yes, Including Prince Harry's
Aside from the incredible charity work the British royals are busy with all year round, our attention is often drawn to their fashion, hair, and makeup choices. This year, with more members of the royal household and ever-elegant events to attend than ever, there were plenty of memorable beauty moments.
Meghan Markle pushed some of the strict royal beauty boundaries at the beginning of her relationship with Prince Harry, particularly with her hair. (Who could forget her messy bun that made the headlines?) However, since becoming the Duchess of Sussex, she's transitioned her hair into slightly more polished styles for formal events. And can we take a minute to talk about Markle's savvy lip liner trick and forever-glowing skin?
Kate Middleton also didn't disappoint with her beauty looks this year. She kept her signature smoky eye and blushed skin but also took tips from Markle by adding more bronzer and highlighter than normal. There was no lack of standout hair moments to choose from, either; Middleton stepped out in numerous updos, a ponytail with a bow, and more bouncy blowouts than we can keep up with. But it's not only the women the public turned to for inspiration when it comes to grooming - Prince Harry's beard inspired an increase in sales of items such as beard oil and razors by 226 percent.
Keep reading to see some of the best beauty moments from the royal family in 2018.

On the Keto Diet and Headed to Olive Garden? Here's What You Should Order
Contrary to what you may have heard, there's more to Olive Garden than never-ending pasta bowls and bottomless baskets of breadsticks. (Not that we're complaining.) That's good news for those on the keto diet - because if you're one of them, you already know that breadsticks aren't on the menu when you're trying to stay under 50 grams of carbs per day.
Olive Garden's nutrition information is available on the restaurant's website, making it super simple to build a meal that will fit into your daily macros. There are a surprising number of keto-friendly dishes you can order straight off the menu, but we've pulled together tips for custom-ordering a low-carb pasta bowl, too. Find what you're craving here, and pull up a seat - it's dinnertime.
- If you're just here for the apps: An order of cheesy, herby stuffed mushrooms will cost you only 13 grams of carbs. If you don't have quite that much wiggle room left in the day, go for Olive Garden's famous house salad (sans croutons, and sub olive oil for the dressing), and you'll come in at under 10 grams of carbs for your entire meal.
- If you're in the mood for chicken: The dinner portions of both the chicken piccata and the chicken margherita have only 12 and 13 grams of carbs, respectively. They're both served with the parmesan-crusted zucchini, which actually has the lowest carb count of any of Olive Garden's side dishes and is higher in fat than the steamed vegetables.
- If you'd prefer seafood: The herb-grilled salmon has just under 10 grams of carbs and comes with a tasty parmesan garlic broccoli.
- If you're feeling saucy: Take a little creative license with the menu, and try building your own pasta bowl, sans pasta. Very nicely ask your server for a pasta bowl with alfredo sauce and chicken or Italian sausage, but ask for it to be served over broccoli or garden veggies. You may get a few weird looks, but when you finally satisfy that craving, it won't matter.
5 Simple Tips For Creating Resolutions You'll Actually Stick With in 2019
Despite what all the memes might try to tell you about how it's inevitable - and humorous - that you'll fail at all your attempts to be a better version of yourself starting in the new year, the reality is that simply doesn't have to be true. Yes, it can be tough to stick to lofty goals you set for yourself on Jan. 1, but it is also totally possible to use the gift of a new calendar year to put new healthy habits into practice.
For me personally, this last year was proof I could make resolutions that I actually accomplished and stuck with throughout the whole year. Here are some simple steps to consider when trying to take your goals from resolutions to reality.

This Cat Gives High Fives at a CrossFit Gym, and Wow, Best Cheerleader Ever?
How do you usually finish a sweat sesh: chug some more water? Fist-bump your fellow class-goer with a look that says, "Thank god we survived?" Head to the showers? Grab a eucalyptus towel if you're at a bougie high-end gym? No matter what your post-workout ritual is, you've been doing it all wrong.
Turns out, there's only one way to end a fitness class, and that's with a high five from a cat. I didn't realize how much I needed a paw-bump from an encouraging feline until I watched this video from CrossFit's Instagram. The friendly tabby gave CrossFitters high fives as they jogged by at a CrossFit box in China. He didn't miss a beat as he stuck his paw out for each patron that jogged past.
You know what my dog does when I finish a workout? Nothing - she just stares at me to be let out for the hundredth time that day. I'm not much of a cat person, but this CrossFit cat has convinced me every gym and fitness class needs one.
5 Reasons Your Belly Fat Isn't Budging - and What to Do About It
Stubborn belly fat isn't just annoying when you're trying to get into a new pair of jeans; excess visceral fat around your stomach can lead to health problems, particularly in women. A study published in the European Journal of Preventative Cardiology found that the incidence of coronary heart disease was greater in women with a higher body mass index (BMI), and a separate study published in the European Journal of Cancer found that body fat and particularly belly fat can raise the risk of breast cancer in women. Whether you want to lose that excess belly fat for weight loss or health reasons (or heck, both), here are the sneaky culprits that are preventing you from shedding abdominal fat, plus some ways to combat it.
I Follow These 6 Rules Every Holiday Season to Prevent Weight Gain
The holidays are full of magic, friendship, and lots of love. But I'd be lying if I said the holidays are an easy time to stay healthy and ward off weight gain. With all the delicious food and drinks surrounding us, it can feel tempting to consume it all in one fell swoop. I've learned the hard way, though, that eating without any structure or guideline in my head can result in overindulging, which leaves me feeling sluggish, bloated, and completely disenchanted with the entire holiday season.
After experiencing many tree-trimming seasons in which I gained weight and had to work hard to lose it in the new year, I've finally locked down a little formula that helps me fully enjoy the holidays and all they have to offer - without the tummy aches and supertight jeans. These are the guidelines I follow every year to prevent unwanted weight gain (and still eat pumpkin pie).
1. I Only Eat When I'm Hungry
This sounds like a no-brainer, but it's much easier said than done. During the holidays, there is food at every turn, whether it's at the office or at home. People are always sharing tasty desserts and snacks, and it can feel impossible to turn it down. But if you listen to your body, it will tell you when it's actually in need of food or if you're just bored or answering a silly craving.
If you're at the office and you feel like reaching for a festive snack, drink a glass of water first. You might be surprised at how often we mistake thirst for hunger. If you get to the point where you're hungry enough that you would eat an apple, then you know that you're actually hungry. Following this rule will prevent you from overeating, and it can be especially handy when you're at an event where you're surrounded by food. The more you listen to your body, the more you'll be able to decipher when you truly need food and when you don't.
2. I Never Go to a Party Without Snacking on Something Before
Going to a party hungry is a rookie mistake. I would know, because I've made it hundreds of times. And when you arrive to an event with a growling belly, you're more likely to make poor choices. Even if there is going to be food at the party I'm going to, I always make sure I have a protein-rich snack before I head out the door. This keeps me full and satiated, and I'm able to think clearer about which snacks I'm reaching for.
3. I Ignore People's Comments About My Eating Choices
There will always be an opinionated friend or family member who will prod or tease you about your dietary choices. They'll ask why you aren't eating the cake or having a fourth glass of wine. Remember that it doesn't matter what other people say. So what if they poke fun at you when you turn down certain foods? All that matters at the end of the day is that you feel your best and you're happy with your choices.
Many of my family members eat a very unhealthy diet, so I've had to learn to be OK with my decisions. I no longer feel bad when I politely say no to some of the foods they're passing around the table.
4. With Every Glass of Wine, I Drink a Glass of Water
It's easy to forget about staying hydrated when you're having fun, but when you fill yourself up with booze and hardly any H2O, you run the risk of feeling dehydrated, a little too drunk, and painfully hungry. That combination often leads to overeating, due to a cloudy head and dulled senses. By drinking a glass of water with every drink, I'm able to pace myself and think smartly about the food I'm choosing to eat.
5. I Keep Track of My Protein Intake Throughout the Day
Just because you're indulging doesn't mean you have to completely forget about your macros. I don't think about the amount of calories or carbs I take in every day during the holidays (life is too short and bread is too good), but I do keep track of my protein intake. Protein keeps you feeling full and satiated, and it's also a necessary nutrient to keep your body prepared for an impromptu workout. I feel better going to a party knowing that I've already met my protein goals for the day; it helps me make better choices with what I'm going to eat.
6. I Stay Away From Packaged and Processed Foods
Nobody should ever be deprived of pumpkin pie, but when it's the store-bought kind that's packed with all kinds of preservatives and strange ingredients I don't recognize, I'll pass. I always seek out the homemade goodies instead. These are generally made with whole, recognizable ingredients (and they taste way better), so you know your body is able to process them better.
Similarly, when you get home after a long day of festivities and social events, rather than picking up fast food or ordering in, try to muster up the energy to make yourself a healthy meal. These small choices will add up over time, and you'll find that they all contribute to you feeling and looking your very best.
All the Health and Fitness Gear Keeping Us Motivated Through the Holidays
Although cold weather and the holiday season are already here, that doesn't mean we can't stay motivated to get outside and enjoy the weather - or keep up with our health and fitness goals. Whether it's shoe spikes that make it easy to run outside or a new pair of leggings, there are plenty of health and fitness products out there that make Winter even better. Here are some products we simply can't live without.
This Is What You Should Wear to Your First F45 Training Class
F45 training is the Aussie-born circuit workout sweeping the fitness industry with multiple franchises in more than 36 countries. The conception of this workout is quite simple. The F stands for functional and 45 is the complete duration of each session in minutes. This innovative interval technique combines ever-changing workouts ranging from rowing and kettlebells to battle ropes and stationary bikes for a serious sweat.
Even as a seasoned athlete (I box and circuit train), I was a bit intimidated when I signed up for my first F45 class. Luckily for me, there is a studio a short distance away from where I live, so I popped in a day before my class to ask a few questions. I spoke with Chris Teakle, director and owner of F45 Williamsburg to get expert advice on how to properly prep prior to training, and most importantly what gear to bring and wear to the make the best out of the class.
What to Wear:
- Long pants and a tight top: "First and foremost, you should be comfortable, but it's also important to choose functional clothes that give you the right support," Teakle says. "Most of our members would wear similar clothing to what you'd wear to a yoga class: full-length leggings, a crop top or a tightish sleeveless top, as you do tend to get sweaty". In my experience, workout leggings are better than shorts, because they offer more freedom in movement and full coverage with extra security for floor exercises. Every second counts in interval training, so there's no time for readjusting your shorts when you have a nanosecond to get to the rowing machine.
- Athletic shoes: Opt for cross-training shoes that support both cardio and strength-training exercises to aid in full support. This will guarantee safety, comfort and minimize injury.
Other Tips For Your First Class:
- Bring a water bottle: Being dehydrated during your workout is not ideal and can make you feel pretty crappy during class. You feel dizzy, crampy, nauseous and completely out of touch with your body, which essentially ruins your workout and can pose a risk to your health. Be sure to drink a good amount of fluids prior to class to promote mental clarity and optimal strength. For convenience, F45 has a water station to refill bottles as needed.
- Get there early: No one wants to feel stressed or rushed. This applies to all, but especially for first-timers who are new to this group class. Get there a few minutes early and introduce yourself to the instructor, go over any injuries or woes you might have prior to class.
- Come ready to work: F45 is no joke. The class uses a wide variety of exercises that challenge you beyond what you could imagine - all safely.

This Healthy Holiday Hack Will Save You So Many Calories This Season
If you're anything like me, you're 1) obsessed with Christmas, and 2) obsessed with festive beverages. Decadent eggnog, spiced cider, rich hot chocolate, and the occasional mulled wine are treats I look forward to year round - and imbibe in without the tiniest shred of restraint come November. Or at least I did, until Father Time started to take his toll on my metabolism, and I was forced to learn a few lessons in self-control, particularly when it comes to liquid calories.
However, I'm not here to cut back on the festive vibes or holiday spirit; quite the contrary! My new trick when it comes to a cup of cheer, sans excess fat and sugar? Tea. Sounds boring as heck, I know, but I'm here to show you otherwise. The brews I reach for when the temps drop and the Nat King Cole gets turned way, way up are packed with flavor and bursting with nostalgia.
Festive teas have helped me not only eliminate liquid calories but also curb my sweet tooth so I don't overindulge on desserts (trust me, I still eat 'em when I want to!). The result is a healthier body with more energy and pep to thrive all season long. Check out some of my favorites ahead; whether you're craving a creamy candy cane blend, a spicy cocoa, or nutmeg-dusted nog, there's a tea for every holiday mood.
17 Low-Carb Recipes That Are So Simple, You'll Never Be Tempted by Takeout Again
There's nothing quite like the crush of work stress and family responsibilities to throw you off your weight-loss goals. When you need to satisfy a deadline-induced craving for a crunchy snack or throw together a weeknight dinner fast, it's essential to have simple, healthy recipes in your back pocket. These low-carb dishes will help you do just that. From make-ahead snacks like kale chips and roasted edamame to breakfasts, lunches, and dinners that require few ingredients or dishes, or very little prep time, you'll have everything you need to stay on track. Here's to a healthier, happier you - whatever the week throws your way.
This 20-Minute, No-Equipment Circuit Is Clutch When the Gym Is Just Too Crowded
Nothing is worse than schlepping all the way to the gym only to realize that the entire neighborhood followed you there. And we all know that, no matter how long you stare at the woman on the elliptical who has definitely exceeded her 30-minute time limit, she's not budging. Still, a crowded gym isn't a reason to throw in the towel on your workout. (After all, showing up is the hardest part.)
This eight-move circuit from Nate Price, NASM-certified personal trainer and owner of Grit N Grind Fitness in Dallas, TX, hits both your upper and lower body, and can be done even if you're squeezed into a corner. Even better, you'll be done with your workout in just 20 minutes. Simply do each of these moves for 20 seconds at a time, resting for 10 seconds between each exercise. Then rest for another minute at the end of the round, completing the circuit a total of four times. That's it!
Good News, Keto Dieters: These 5 Dishes at Panda Express Are Fairly Low-Carb
When you're pressed for time, there's nothing simpler than Chinese takeout, and with its world-famous Orange Chicken and buffet-style ordering, Panda Express is a top choice. If you're on the keto diet, you already know classics like fried rice and spring rolls are off limits, but is there anything on the menu you can eat? Turns out, yes, as long as you watch your macros.
Still, you should only indulge on occasion. Those Chinese-inspired flavors often come with hidden sugars, and the restaurant's scoop-and-serve style means you can't choose how much of any one ingredient (like sauce) goes into your dish. When you do go, dig your chopsticks into these safer picks:
- Chicken: Your best bet is to order from the restaurant's Wok Smart menu, which offers more complete meals for under 300 calories. Tossed in a ginger sauce with fresh-cut beans and onions, the String Bean Chicken Breast comes in at only nine grams of net carbs. You can also try the Mushroom Chicken at 10 grams - it's loaded with chicken, mushrooms, and zucchini, glazed in ginger soy sauce.
- Beef: Also from the Wok Smart menu, the Broccoli Beef pairs tender beef with (you guessed it) fresh broccoli. It's a pretty filling meal for 11 grams of net carbs.
- Fish: Order the Steamed Ginger Fish (eight grams of net carbs) instead of a deep-fried protein. You can pair it with the Super Greens - a mix of kale, broccoli, and cabbage - for five grams of net carbs or the Mixed Vegetables for 11 grams (less if you get a half order).
- Vegan or vegetarian: For plant-based protein, order the spicy Hot Szechuan Tofu (eight grams of net carbs), and complete your meal with either the Super Greens or Mixed Vegetables.

I Lost So Much Weight That I Have Loose Skin, and Honestly, What About It?
Weight loss can make you lighter on your feet, give you more energy, and make you feel more confident, but there's one side effect that tends to really bother people: the loose skin. When I found out that I had developed type 2 diabetes, I radically changed my diet and lifestyle to avoid having to take medication. When the pounds began to fall off, my skin couldn't keep up with the shrinking, and I was left with what so many dread.
As a body-positive photographer and creator of The Honest Body Project, I yell from the rooftops for people to embrace their bodies. I've had so many people ask me, "Well, what about loose skin?" What about it? I'll be the first to admit that feeling confident is easier said than done, but I'm taking care of my body and feel better than I have in a decade - how my stomach looks when my shirt is off is the last thing on my mind. My body has stuck with me for 32 years, through the birth of two children. I can't now shame it for shrinking the only way it knows how.
I wish that society would stop viewing bodies as things that need to look perfect. Our pants size, the number on the scale - none of that really matters. How do you feel? How did you take care of yourself today? Do you love yourself? These are the types of questions you should ask yourself. If you want or need to lose weight for health reasons, try your hardest to remain body positive throughout your journey. My goal has never been weight loss, only to be healthy and reverse my diabetes. I would take the loose skin over high blood sugar any day.
My loose skin shows most on my stomach and my arms. I could walk around in long sleeves to hide my arms, but that would be miserable in the Florida heat. Instead, I wear what I feel comfortable in, and I'm not bothered by it. We all get just one life, and learning to embrace the body you have will help you to enjoy it more. Whatever flaws you may see or think you have, they're just another part of you.
Your body is unique and beautiful, just like mine. My worth isn't measured in a number, and it surely isn't measured in how loose or tight my skin is. So join me in tossing out this idea of perfection. You're already amazing.

Lots of People Love the Holidays - I Am Not One of Those People
For some, the holiday season cannot come soon enough. I am sure that there are many people out there who relish the opportunity to commence their holiday season festivities, regardless of the date. I am not one of those people. As unpopular of an opinion as it may be, I do not like the holiday season. What some see as the most magical time of year, I see as a time of year that often brings out feelings of deep melancholy and impending anxiety. I know that I will once again need to live through the arduous build up to a disappointing event that feels as if it will never be as meaningful and special as society tells me it should be.
I know that I will once again need to live through the arduous build up to a disappointing event that feels as if it will never be as meaningful and special as society tells me it should be.
It wasn't always like this. When I was younger, I truly believed in Santa and the magic of Christmas. I would write Santa earnest letters detailing my hopes and fears, which I left anchored to the table under the glass of milk laid out for his enjoyment when he and his reindeers came around to visit me in the outer boroughs of New York City. As time wore on and I began to feel skeptical of the logistical practicality of a man zipping all around the world in one night, I started to conduct experiments. One year, I left out a piece of bread and asked Santa to take a bite, just one, so that the next morning I could then instruct my father to also take a bite from the same slice and compare their bite marks. I thought about setting up a surveillance video camera somehow, certain that at some point during the night a jolly old man would come barreling through my chimney. Instead, I accepted the fresh indentation in the cushion of my couch as proof that he had, in fact, been there over the course of that December night.

I can remember the last Christmas my family had before my parents separated the following February. I was nine, and I can recall waking up with a pounding headache in my temples. I didn't feel well, a combination of over stimulation and physical discomfort that made me feel like I was running on fumes. I felt off, something wasn't right. Little did I know, (or maybe, somehow, I did), that this would be the last Christmas where my mother, father, brother, and I would be waking up under the same roof. After that, the holidays would never be the same.
Little did I know, (or maybe, somehow, I did), that this would be the last Christmas where my mother, father, brother, and I would be waking up under the same roof.
I come from a largely nonreligious family; my mother is culturally Jewish but not practicing, which meant no Hanukkah for us, and my father has his own liberally oriented religious beliefs that did not factor much into our home life. Because of this, our holiday celebrations were not moored in any religious belief or tradition. We observed Christmas in the way that I believe a lot of people do, unrelated to its religious origins and more as a holiday that is prominent in our culture and society. Without a large set of traditions to keep us tied to a classical observance of the holidays or a unified nuclear family, and with an extended family that did not see commemorating Christmas together as compulsory, the magic of the holidays began to slowly fizzle out for me. They became a source of discomfort and anxiety, as the world around me continued to constantly bombard my brain with content depicting how the holidays were supposed to be, a sad reminder that I did not fit into that mold.

The narrative of Christmas can be hard to escape; sometimes it feels like, come November and December, we exist within an echo chamber of holiday spirit. We live in a society that is saturated with images depicting the holiday season, often in a highly idealized, glossy, and picture-perfect iteration. We hear jolly songs that consistently manage to skillfully incorporate the sound of jingle bells, watch movies and TV specials starring happy families that live in beautiful suburban houses where it always snows at just the right time, consume special food and drink out of seasonally patterned cups, somehow managing to integrate the events of a few days into a seasonal lifestyle that ensures the buildup to the actual event will last as long as possible. The holidays can become completely pervasive, almost impossible to avoid up until the quiet days that follow Christmas have arrived and provide respite - when the sad, festively packaged goods that have gone unsold wind up on clearance shelves and dried up trees line the curb, covering the sidewalk in pine needles.
There is no right and wrong way to celebrate the holidays, and it is your prerogative how you will integrate them into your life. Never feel badly because your holidays do not look a certain way.
As I got older, I became more aware of my experiences. Eventually, I learned Santa wasn't real (unfortunately). I began to see the strain of carrying a holiday season on the back of my now single parents, tense days that were split up between my mom and dad. To me, the holidays became performative, people attempting to observe these designated days in a certain manner simply because we were indoctrinated to believe that there was the correct way to do so. I saw through it, conscious of the ritualistic effort and lack of unity in my home. And to make matters worse, underneath it all, I knew I still I longed for my family to be all together in matching leisure outfits, walking through a blanket of fresh snow somewhere in the woods, a towering Christmas tree in a cozy living room, and maybe even a pet dog wearing a Santa hat. But that was never going to happen for me. Coming to terms with the incongruence of my reality and the dream I had created with the help of society's hyperperfected reality made me sad. Fractured holidays passed year after year, and I continued to breathe a sigh of relief once they were finally over.
I am beginning to see the holidays differently now. I no longer live in the same city as my family, and for the first time in a long time, I am looking forward to going home for the holidays and spending time together, no matter what that looks like. It may mean getting Chinese food with my dad and my brother out by the airport in Queens or going to the movies with my mom and her fiancé, but as long as we can enjoy each other's company, I will be alright with its rendering. For all the other people out there who may also struggle during the holiday season, my advice to you is to focus on making holiday events fit the circumstances of your life, and not the other way around. There is no right and wrong way to celebrate the holidays, and it is your prerogative how you will integrate them into your life. Never feel badly because your holidays do not look a certain way. Ultimately, no matter how you spend the holidays, I hope that they bring you warmth, comfort, gratitude, and merriment.
