Politicians and Family Pay Tribute to George H.W. Bush Following His Death

Former president George Herbert Walker Bush passed away in his Houston home on Friday at the age of 94. His death comes less than eight months after the passing of his wife Barbara. Bush lived with a form of Parkinson's disease and a day after Barbara's funeral, he was treated for a blood infection. He will be laid to rest alongside his late wife and their daughter, Robin, who, sadly, died at age three from leukemia.

Bush is remembered, not only by his children George, Jeb, Pauline, Dorothy, Neil, and Marvin, and his 17 grandchildren, but by his colleagues, friends, and the American public. Read on to see tributes from his family and politicians on both sides of the aisle.

This Festive Game-of-Thrones-Themed Wedding Is a Medieval Fantasy Come to Life

Winter is coming . . . but so is wedding season, and this beautiful couple decided to celebrate their union Game of Thrones-style! You read that right: Claire and Chris tied the knot on the historic grounds of Thornewood Castle in Lakewood, WA, and their ceremony was filled with details from the iconic series amid a festive Christmas backdrop.

"Chris and Claire actually traveled down from Canada to celebrate in one of Washington's few celebrated castles," said photographer Jason Comerford. "They had their hearts set on a very authentic medieval-themed wedding due to their love of the Game of Thrones series. Their day was full of custom, handmade details, including their bridal party's beautiful outfits!"

If you take a close look at the pictures, the venue looks similar to the Red Keep, all decked out in holiday decor. Another fun detail is that Claire opted for a rustic metallic lantern with an elegant arrangement of pinkish-purple flowers instead of a traditional bouquet. Chris looked like 16th century royalty in a blue and gold jacket with ruffled sleeves. The ceremony was stunning; a string quartet played when Claire walked down the aisle, and later on, the couple drank from a chalice during their nuptials.

Let's be honest, Winter is amazing. It's that time of year when you can bundle up near a fireplace and sip on hot cocoa all day and, best of all, you can spend your holidays with your loved ones. Well, photographer Jessica Palacios managed to capture the amazing essence of the holiday season in this gorgeous Christmas-themed wedding shoot. "By the time Halloween comes around, I'm ready for some holiday cheer. I know I'm not the only one!" said Jessica. "We wanted to embrace every essence of Christmas with the styled shoot. The textures of this shoot to the small details, I truly believe we captured Christmas in the form of a wedding."

This shoot absolutely embodies the Christmas spirit in every detail. Even the intricate embroidery on the bride's bodice is reminiscence of snowflake patterns. The groom looks festive in a sharp suit with a lapel pin above his breast pocket made from holly leaves. The food and drinks were laid out on a wooden table, which adds a rustic charm to the shoot, while mistletoe leaves, pine cones, and wreaths are elegantly used to decorate the room. In most of the photos, the most prominent colors are deep red, forest green, and gold, which perfectly reflect the magic of Christmas.

A Quick-Thinking Stranger Saved a Baby's Life at Golden Corral, and Her Mom Is Beyond Thankful

North Carolina mom Hannah Jarvis is thanking the kind stranger who saved her 7-month-old daughter, Calli, from choking while her family was eating Thanksgiving dinner at Golden Corral. According to Hannah's Facebook post, a quick-thinking woman named Debra acted fast when she saw Calli choking on a bite of mashed potatoes.

"I immediately jerked my daughter out of her high chair and started pounding on her back, but I wasn't doing it right and so I started to panic," Hannah told POPSUGAR. "My mother started to do the same as I was doing: holding her upside down, smacking her back. Then, Debra intervened and did the Heimlich maneuver properly. We were all in a panic."

Relieved that her daughter survived the incident, Hannah took to Facebook to share just how grateful she is.

"If anyone knows who Debra Rouse is, this lady is a hero! If it weren't for this angel, my daughter probably would have been wheeled away in an ambulance today," Hannah wrote. "Thank you for saving my daughter's life and thank you Trish from Golden Corral who helped intervene as well! My family and I can't thank you enough for helping. My daughter is fine and has been seen at the ER and is perfectly happy and healthy now :) I will never forget the many tears that were shed today in Golden Corral as this angel stepped in to perform the Heimlich maneuver that saved my baby from choking to death. Most importantly, thank you Jesus for hearing our desperate cries for Calli this Thanksgiving afternoon."

Thanks to the power of social media, the post eventually made it onto Debra's screen, and she left a sweet reply in the comments section. "Good evening Mrs. Hannah, I saw the news article and I messaged you my number! I'm elated that Callie is doing well, y'all have been on my mind since yesterday! Love you all and take care."

Hannah and Debra continue to speak regularly since she saved Calli's life. "We actually met up in Asheville the day after the incident so I could give her a proper thank you and meet her beautiful family," Hannah said. "I'm just so thankful for God sending Debra that day!"

Love Elf on the Shelf? Well, It May Actually Be Pretty Bad For Your Kids

A huge Christmas tradition, besides the bottomless sweets and festive holiday movies, that has blown up in recent years is Elf on the Shelf. Manipulating the "family elf" into silly and elaborate poses at night to be discovered the next morning by your children is supposed to be a fun, family-bonding activity, right? Not so fast.

The crux of this toy is that the elf is not-so-secretly spying on your kids on a daily basis to report their behavior to Santa Claus. If your child is bad or doesn't follow rules, the obvious risk is that their Christmas presents will be sacrificed, and they will instead receive that dreaded lump of coal. Child psychologist Dr. Vanessa Lapointe warns that this little game might not be as innocent and light-hearted as originally thought.

When adults get up to tricks and strategies to try and control children's behavior, two not-so-great things happen.

"Parents have been trying frantically to control their children's behavior by making some kind of positive outcome contingent on good behavior," she explained. "Be good and you get a star on the star chart. Be good and Santa will bring you a present. The problem is that this creates fallout emotionally and neurologically."

Dr. Lapointe explained that contrary to popular belief, good behavior isn't something that can be conned. "When adults get up to tricks and strategies to try and control children's behavior, two not-so-great things happen. The first is that the child intuitively senses in the adult a struggle to control, which must mean that the adult doesn't really have it going on. A capable, competent, in-charge adult wouldn't need to rely on tricks and strategies to control the child. The second is that the child feels 'played' by the adult."

This "played" feeling is especially problematic for families, since it has the potential to create a disconnect between the children and adults. "Scientifically, we know that a child's most essential need for healthy development is a deep and trusting relationship with their parent," Dr. Lapointe said. "So this is not something we should mess around with."

The risk, Dr. Lapointe maintains, is in the emotion and neurological well-being of the child. "Emotionally, when children learn that acceptance and acclaim flow from acquiescing to the will of another, it doesn't take much to see how self-concept is impacted. Now fast forward to this child's adolescence . . . is it any wonder they have succumbed to peer pressure?"

But it's not just their emotional health that is at risk. "When children experience relational disconnection, it activates the stress network in the brain," Dr. Lapointe continued. "When these areas are activated consistently, neuroplasticity dictates that the brain will grow to be good at being stressed. This is likely to lead to more challenging behaviors rather than improved behavior."

If parents want to join in the revelry of Elf on the Shelf, but without the risk associated with it, Dr. Lapointe recommends removing the problematic elements. "Have him be a friendly little soul who helps the child along," she said. "Maybe the elf is just for entertainment value. Maybe the elf actually takes helpful bits of info back to Santa rather than tattling on the child."

Jenna Dewan Shared Her 5-Year-Old's Christmas List, and Damn, Did She Take It Out of My 1995 Journal?

Jenna Dewan just sent off her daughter Everly's holiday wish list to the North Pole, and its contents are the most perfect snapshot of what gifts a typical 5-year-old would want (specifics aside, my list in 1995 was probably comparable). Jenna shared the photo of the list she transcribed for Everly on Instagram, which is full of items relating to fairies, mermaids, unicorns, and puppies (and we already know she loves slime, another 5-year-old plaything tent pole, as well).

"Dear Santa, Here's my Christmas list," the letter starts. The (long) list goes on to include "cozy wings," a "fairy wand that talks to you," a "surprise board game," a "princess vacuum," "Butterfly Princess Barbie," and several other gifts in similar veins. The smart 5-year-old even noted important details to Santa, such as the fact that the Wish Me dog and unicorn she wants are "from the commercial" and the rainbow wings she's requesting should be "big ones."

We hope Everly was nice enough this year to get a few of these gifts from Santa, and we'll be looking out on Instagram for snaps of her after Christmas in her giant rainbow wings, swinging around a talking fairy wand.

Tyra Banks's Son Thinks Christmas Is Every Day, and Hmm, Maybe He's Onto Something!

Supermodel and Life-Size 2 actress, Tyra Banks, recently swung by Live With Kelly and Ryan to chat about her upcoming projects and some parenting conundrums she's faced with her nearly 3-year-old son, York. The latest? Apparently, he thinks every day is Christmas.

The mom told Kelly and Ryan that "he is so excited [for Christmas], but he's confused," and honestly, the reason why is pretty valid. Tyra explained that because some people decorate for the holidays well before Thanksgiving, York isn't exactly sure when Christmas Day is. "He thinks that every time he sees a tree, a tree farm, lights, [or] a Santa that that is Christmas Day . . . He's just thinking that this is what the world is. He's like, 'Mommy, it's Christmas today! It's Christmas! Where's Santa Claus? Where [are] my gifts?' He expects Santa every day."

And we have to agree, the timeline of the holiday season is probably super confusing for little ones. Fingers crossed Santa leaves York some good presents this year on actual Christmas Day!

This Sixth-Grader Told the Truth About Her Bus Driver Hitting a Car, and Holy Sh*t, Not All Heroes Wear Capes

Andrew Sipowicz, a student at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY, got quite the surprise when he went to start his car one morning. According to a now-viral tweet, he walked out to find his vehicle damaged with a note attached to it. And while it's pretty typical to leave your name and insurance info when you get into a fender bender, the note left on his windshield was out of the ordinary for one reason: it was penned by an anonymous sixth-grader whose bus driver hit his car and drove off on the way home from school.

By the looks of it, the female student didn't hold back when it came time to tell the truth. "If you're wondering what happen to your car, Bus: 449 hit your car. It stops here every day to drop me off at 5 p.m. What happened? She was trying to pull off and hit the car. She hit and run. She tried to tear over and squeeze threw but couldn't. She actually squeezed threw. She made a dent and I saw what happened. Sorry, Driver seat left door, A lady in the bus driver seat 499, Buffalo Public School bus. - A 6th grader at Houghten Academy."

While the confession is certainly chock-full of useful information, her illustration of the accident complete with screaming children takes the cake.

Andrew shared the note on Twitter with the caption: "Shoutout to the anonymous 6th grader for saving me a couple thousand (Bus not drawn to scale)." Fortunately, the student's good deed didn't go entirely unrewarded. He posted an update with his followers explaining that they identified the good Samaritan. "Update: The student who wrote the letter has been found and we're in the process of finding a way to reward her for her actions," he wrote. "Very grateful for what she did."

Kevin Garcia, the vice principal at Houghton Academy, is proud of one of the students for doing the right thing in an awkward situation, telling an ABC News affiliate that they'll be "celebrating her outstanding leadership" in the weeks to come.

If You're Busting Your Ass at the Gym and Not Losing Weight, Bob Harper Says This Is Why

Losing weight takes a considerable overall lifestyle effort, including dialing in your diet, working out, getting enough sleep, and managing stress. But of all the factors at play that can help you lose weight, many people tend to solely focus on their activity. If they just up their workout regimen and log hours at the gym, they think they can reach their goals.

Turns out, upping your activity is only half the battle. Less than half the battle, actually, since losing weight requires a focus on nutrition and eating in a calorie deficit. It's a problem fitness guru Bob Harper sees all too often. "I don't want people to work so hard in the gym and then blow it all by eating too much or too much of the wrong thing," he told POPSUGAR.

He added that some people view working out, especially cardio, as a means to burn off the food they ate or as an excuse to indulge later. And while it's important to eat the foods you want in moderation, putting such an emphasis on cardio could backfire.

Related: Bob Harper Reveals the Biggest Thing That Will Sabotage Your Weight-Loss Progress

"I think that people tend to overdo it when it comes to their cardio activity," he told POPSUGAR. "What that's going to actually do, it could have a reverse effect; that high-intensity cardio will actually make you hungrier."

Like Bob mentioned in a video on his Instagram as part of a series called #TwoCupsIn, "People still think that they are going to be able to go to the gym and do all this cardio and be able to get the body that they are looking to get, and I'm here to tell you that that's not necessarily the case," he said. "You have got to focus on what you're eating every single day and at every single meal. You're going to get the body you want by working out in the kitchen."

To figure out how many calories you should eat a day for weight loss, use this formula, which factors in your height, weight, and activity level. If you're confused about what to eat, check out this post from nutritionists who share what to eat at every meal to lose weight. Sure, exercise is important - but if your diet isn't dialed in, you won't see the results you are looking for.

5 Gym Moves That'll Help You Fight Belly Fat, According to a Trainer

Ah, belly fat! It'd be great if we could magically zap it away forever, but, unfortunately, getting rid of it requires a little more work than that. "There are three non-negotiables when it comes to burning belly fat: diet, cardio, and core strengthening exercises. There's no way to spot reduce fat just on your belly to slim your waistline. You must eat clean and do cardio to burn off the fat to get the results you're looking for," says certified personal trainer Sarah Chadwell, NASM. But you can and should also focus on strengthening the muscles on your core to "bolster your results."

Utilizing core-specific training in the gym will tighten and develop your core muscles, giving you toned and lean muscles. Here are five advanced exercises that Chadwell suggests using for sculpting a stronger midsection.
