Parents, Please Don't Give Your Kids a Puppy on Christmas Morning
Nothing compares to watching the excitement on your kids' faces when they open their gifts on Christmas morning. They eagerly rip open the boxes and their eyes instantly light up when they see that Santa has brought them the thing they've wanted more than anything. And for some on Christmas morning, that means a puppy. Those lovable creatures, with their floppy ears and giant feet, are a guaranteed hit. I mean, who wouldn't want a puppy? They're a great addition to any family. But just because everyone loves them doesn't mean they should be given as gifts. Keep reading for why you shouldn't give a puppy as a gift on Christmas morning, and how to safely bring one home if you do get one during the holiday season.
1. Christmas Is Too Overwhelming
Christmas is a notoriously hectic day. From opening gifts to cooking to having family over or going to someone else's house, Christmas just isn't the time to introduce a tiny puppy into your home and family. Kids, especially little kids, can also get emotional, scream, or grab at the puppy, which could scare them. This is especially true if your new pet isn't house trained yet. Getting a new animal on Christmas will add a whole new level of stress for you and for the puppy.
Dog expert Cesar Millan points out: "You've just thrown [them] into a completely alien environment with no direction, and these early associations are going to stick. The place is unfamiliar, it smells different, and there doesn't seem to be any way out." Unless you're going to stop the whole Christmas gift-giving process and devote your whole day to the dog, chances are you're going to really stress out your new pup.
2. Pets Are Family Members
Living, breathing creatures like puppies and kittens aren't toys - they're new members of the family that will require love and attention for the next 9 to 15 years. Puppies should require a great amount of thought and preparation. They need a fleet of supplies, from crates and beds to food and toys, and they need the time and space to acclimate to their new things and home.
3. Children Might Want to Have a Say
When I've adopted animals in the past, the shelter workers always ask if every member of the family is present and OK with the adoption of a pet. One shelter wouldn't even let me adopt my pup until I brought my roommate in to confirm that she was on board. Largely, this process should hold true for kids. If you're expecting children to love and take care of a puppy for the next decade at least, they should have some say in which puppy they get, otherwise this is just a gift for you, and that's not the way gifts work.
4. Instead, Plan a Family Trip
That being said, you can still "give a puppy" for Christmas. Instead of putting a puppy in a box or stocking, give your kid the puppy toys, the crate, or a leash. Explain to them what this gift means, and that they'll be able to help pick out and rescue their new pet. They'll feel more invested in the process because they get to help. As part of your gift, pick a day as a family to go look at puppies, and after Christmas has died down, come up with a plan. This way, your family is happy and prepared, and a puppy has the best shot at adjusting to their new home and family with ease.

Stay More Mindful in Your Everyday Life With This 1-Week Mindfulness Plan
It seems like we're constantly plugged in: scrolling through social media, listening to podcasts, and streaming TV shows take up all of our free time. But have you ever stopped to just take a big breath and be mindful? "Mindfulness" has become such a buzzword over the last couple of years, but what does it actually mean?
David Schiller, author of Mindfulness: Ideas and Inspiration to Open Your I, best describes mindfulness as "intentional seeing" in his book. To break it down, it means to "hit pause, slow down, try to let go of the endless stream of thoughts, and just focus on what's in front of us." This means being aware of your surroundings and your thoughts, and to be fully present.
Since we are so used to having distractions running in the background - listening to music in the car, watching TV while cooking, streaming a podcast while gardening - it's rare we are actually present and focused on what we are doing. Although that seems like a big ask, here are everyday ways you can incorporate mindfulness into your life. For just a couple of minutes a day, you can focus on your breathing, tune out your thoughts, and keep your mind on the simple task at hand.
We've compiled a one-week plan for being more mindful each day. Since mindfulness isn't meditation exactly, you may also want to add a few minutes of guided meditation into your day. The following opportunities for mindfulness will help you de-stress, focus, and have more energy for the rest of your busy life.
1 Side Effect Doctors Don't Want You to Fret Over, If You're Still Putting Off That Flu Shot
Despite the fact that it's easier than ever to get your flu shot (many stores and standalone pharmacies even offer the vaccine for free), there are lots of reasons you might be putting it off, from stressful holiday planning to vaccine-specific questions you simply haven't had the time to ask. Here's one you can check off your list: the flu shot is unlikely to interact with other injections or any of the prescription or over-the-counter medications you're taking.
"Currently there are no confirmed medications that interact with the annual flu vaccine," Carolyn Kaloostian, MD, MPH, a clinical assistant professor of family medicine at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine, told POPSUGAR. "There were some case reports over the last 30 years of increased medication levels of some anti-seizure and blood thinning medications. However, follow-up studies have not confirmed a consistent relationship, and these are likely a result of other factors."
Phil Johnson, MD, professor of general internal medicine at McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, added that immunosuppressant or steroid drugs and certain vaccines, such as the PCV13 vaccine for pneumonia prevention (which is commonly given to adults over age 65), could make the flu vaccine less effective and cause a mild reaction it.
"However, this isn't a situation where we would necessarily warn a patient," Dr. Johnson said. "Getting other vaccines at the same time can cause bleeding at the injection site, but your doctor generally would not use this as a reason to warn against getting a flu shot."
Why? It's simple, really: the flu shot is just so important. "The annual flu vaccine is the best way to protect your loved ones and yourselves, as millions of people get the flu each year, and tens of thousands die from flu-related causes," Dr. Kaloostian said. The benefits far outweigh the risks and side effects, which are typically very mild.
This Is Why You're Always Bloated During Travel - Here's How to Fix It Before Your Next Trip
The process of traveling - especially during the holidays - can be extremely stressful due to traffic, flight delays, and trip cancellations. Besides testing your patience, travel can also disrupt how your body functions. Nope, we aren't talking about tight hamstrings because airlines have reduced how much leg room you have to accommodate more seats; we're talking about your digestive system.
Not exactly the icebreaker conversation you'll want to have with your seatmates, but it's important to know how travel impacts your digestion. To understand how that cross-country flight is messing with your stomach, making you bloated, gassy, and constipated, POPSUGAR spoke to Samantha Nazareth, a double board-certified gastroenterologist in New York City.
Related: The 1 Thing I Never Board an Airplane Without (Hint: It'll Minimize the Germs)
"Most people are traveling for hours on end, and not really moving a whole lot. As soon as we sit and don't move, that slows down the movements inside of us called peristalsis," Dr. Nazareth said. Peristalsis is wave-like muscle contractions that are responsible for moving the food you eat from your esophagus to your stomach and your intestines, and eventually, you've got to go number two.
Getting up throughout your flight or stopping at a rest stop to shake out your legs may help slightly, but if you really want to avoid constipation and other stomach discomfort, Dr. Nazareth recommends the following three pieces of advice - and they're easy to do.

I Spent $48 on a Sleep Mask, and It's Better Than Sleeping With Blackout Curtains and Ear Plugs
When you wake up almost every day at 4:45 a.m., sleep becomes a necessity, but also a luxury. Most days, I get around five to six hours of sleep - that is if I can fall asleep. At night, I find myself listening to the noises outside my window (because there's always something going on in New York City), running through my to-do list for the next day, week, month, and year (I think a LOT), and worrying about my training and work schedules.
Although I try my hardest not to scroll through Instagram in bed, and follow these expert tips for better sleep, I still struggle to get a quality night's rest most of the time.
I've heard a ton about weighted blankets improving sleep, but I really like my comforter, and the way my studio apartment is set up, I just don't have enough room for another item (unless it sneakers). Because space is limited and I don't have the funds to renovate a brownstone in Harlem, I decided to try a sleep mask.
I wish I had some great story as to how I came across the Lunya Washable Silk Sleep Mask ($48), but knowing me, I was probably shopping online at 2 a.m. Not going to lie, the price point had me feeling some kind of way, but after reading 49 reviews, I felt more confident in my purchase.
After wearing this mask every night for a couple of weeks, I know this for sure: I never want to go to bed again without it. Dramatic? It depends on who you ask, but it's 100 percent true. So what makes this mask better than a $10 one I can find at Target? It's machine-washable, it's silk (which means I'm fighting off wrinkles and protecting my skin), it muffles noise, it's better than blackout curtains, and it doesn't leave dents on my face or hair.
A few months ago they changed the lights on my street, and ever since I've been dealing with obnoxious light coming through my window at night. I considered blackout curtains, but decided against them because the light is nice overall (just not when I'm trying to sleep). After a few nights of wearing this mask, I noticed I was able to sleep through the entire night (except waking up to go to the bathroom), which is very rare. The annoying people who party outside while everyone else is sleeping? Couldn't hear them.
I also have a habit of waking up and checking every clock in sight (microwave, stove, and cable box because I live in a studio apartment) throughout the night because I'm paranoid about sleeping through my multiple alarms. Since wearing this mask at night, I've woken up once or twice to check the time. That's what I call progress, people.
Investing in this eye mask was a great decision on my end, and I'm obviously not the only one who feels this way. Lunya offers six silk sleep masks, and currently, five out of six colors are sold out. Fortunately, I spoke with the team at Lunya, and they said they will be restocking and releasing new colors of the silk masks in mid-January. That gives you enough time to save up all your holiday money to get one.
If you can't wait to get your hands on their silk mask, check out the brand's Pima cotton Restore Mask ($48).

Ariana Grande Releases "Imagine," a Sultry New Song From Her Upcoming Album
Just a few weeks after Ariana Grande blessed us with the iconic music video for "Thank U, Next," she's back at it again, releasing another single from her upcoming fifth album. Titled "Imagine," the brand-new track has a slowed-down tempo and shows Grande's vulnerable side, as she longingly sings, "Love how my face fits so good in your neck. Why can't you imagine a world like that?"
Leading up to the song's release at midnight on Dec. 14, Grande shared a message about its meaning on her Instagram Stories, writing, "For those of you asking about imagine: I would say if 'thank u, next" = acceptance... 'imagine' = denial. Hope that makes sense." The 25-year-old singer also responded to a fan's tweet about the track, explaining that it's "kind of like... pretending it never ended" - the "it" being a relationship. Watch the captivating lyric video above to hear the entire catchy song, or play it on Spotify, Apple Music, or iTunes; you'll definitely have it stuck in your head for the rest of the week.

Ellen DeGeneres Politely Explains to James Corden That "Bless Your Heart" Is Actually an Insult
I'm from North Carolina, so I know what the expression "bless your heart" really means. Adorable Londoner James Corden, however, does not. He hosted Ellen DeGeneres and Patrick Wilson on The Late Late Show With James Corden on Wednesday night, and since the two guests are from parts of the South - Ellen is from Louisiana and Patrick is from Virginia - James asked, "What are your favorite expressions from that part of the world? I've never been."
He explained that he met someone from the South and was trying to park but couldn't get in the space, and the woman said, "Oh, darlin', bless your heart." "I thought, oh, that's the nicest expression you could ever have!" James said. Ellen had to break the news: "It's an insult." She clarified the "compliment" James was given and explained that it was more like, "You poor, stupid person." Patrick chimed in and said, "It gets you out of anything. You could say, 'She's a horrible person. Bless her heart.'" I personally can't stop laughing. Watch Ellen talk about that, along with the real reason she was on the show - to discuss Relatable, her first stand-up comedy special in 15 years.
Finally, Some Good News: One Day at a Time Season 3 Will Hit Netflix in February!
If you were at all worried that Rita Moreno would need to take time off of One Day at a Time's third season to film the West Side Story remake, never fear - it appears she's back and better than ever.
After months of wondering whether Netflix would give the beloved family sitcom the green light on season three at all, we officially have a premiere date on our hands: Feb. 8! Moreno will be joined by costars Justina Machado, Isabella Gomez, and Marcel Ruiz, who all play members of a Cuban-American family living in Los Angeles (along with Todd Grinnell, who plays handyman Schneider). The third season comprises 13 30-minutes episodes, so you can expect to cry at least 13 times in the near future.
Check out the cute date announcement above, then prepare yourself to see Gloria Estefan (who sings the show's theme song) play Lydia's baby sister and arch-nemesis, Mirtha, when the show returns in a few months.
Wondering If Lenny Kravitz Is Still Friends With Ex Nicole Kidman? He Has an Answer For You
They say the Hollywoood world is smaller than it appears, and that seems to ring true when it comes to dating history. Lenny Kravitz knows this first-hand, as he's been with multiple A-list celebrities, including Madonna, Adriana Lima, and Lisa Bonet (with whom he shares a daughter, actress Zoë Kravitz). On Dec. 12, Lenny talked about how things are between him and another one of his exes, Nicole Kidman, during an episode of Watch What Happens Live.
A fan phoned into the show asking why Lenny and Nicole broke up in the early 2000s, as well as whether it was weird for Lenny to watch Zoë costar alongside Nicole in the HBO series Big Little Lies. "I thought it was very interesting that they ended up on the same show," Lenny responded. "Zoë hadn't seen Nicole since she was younger, and so it was beautiful that they got to know each other as adults and make this great show together. And that's about it." As for why Lenny and Nicole ended things? Well, just watch the clip above to find out.
Megan Mullally Is Officially Hosting the SAG Awards, and, Honey, We're Ready For It
In 2019, the SAG Awards will celebrate an exciting benchmark: its 25th year! To celebrate the occasion, producer Kathy Connell has elected a very special woman as the evening's hostess: the one, the only, Megan Mullally. "We are delighted to have the talented, warm and funny Megan Mullally to host the SAG Awards Silver Anniversary," Connell commented in an official press release. "This is a very special year, and we are all looking forward to a memorable show."
Mullally has been absolutely killing it lately, especially when it comes to the beloved reboot of NBC's Will & Grace. (We may or may not be hoping for some kind of Will & Grace shenanigans during the ceremony, sue us!) But Mullally is so much more than the brilliant star behind the iconic Karen Walker, and we can't wait to see what she has up her sleeve. "As a frustrated casting director and full-on fangirl of great actors everywhere, I'm over the moon to be a part of the SAG Awards 25th Anniversary," Mullally said. Grab the vodka, honey, because we're ready to glam up, get drunk, and pass out . . . some trophies.

Outlander: Does William Know Jamie Is His Father? Sam Heughan Weighs In
During the Dec. 9 episode of Outlander, appropriately titled "Blood of My Blood," Jamie (Sam Heughan) welcomes a couple of unexpected visitors at Fraser's Ridge, which leads to a number of poignant, emotional scenes - scenes that Heughan told POPSUGAR that he was particularly excited to film in season four. Read on to find out exactly what went down and Heughan's interpretation of the events, but be warned: spoilers ahead for episode six and light spoilers from the books.
In "Blood of My Blood," Lord John Grey (David Berry) makes a stop at Jamie and Claire's homestead on his way to Lynchburg, VA, bringing his adopted son, William (Oliver Finnegan) with him. Of course, John, Claire, Jamie, and the viewers all know that William's biological father is Jamie himself, from when young Geneva Dunsany (Hannah James) blackmailed him into sleeping with her while he was working at her estate. But young William is still under the impression that his biological father is the late Ludovic Ransom, Eighth Earl of Ellesmere (James Cameron Stewart).
When Lord John falls ill with the measles, Jamie takes William on a little father-son camping trip, though all William remembers of Jamie is that he worked as the groom at William's estate. But when William wanders into Cherokee territory and tries to take a speared fish, he is threatened by some hostile locals and Jamie is forced to blurt out that he is William's father and the Cherokee should take his blood instead of the boy's.
Willie shows great bravery when he admits that Jamie is "lying" (because as far as Willie knows, he is) and says he alone is responsible for stealing the fish. The Cherokee let him live, making only a small cut as payment and leaving the two with a warning. But the entire encounter gets William's wheels turning about the possible identity of his father.
He later asks Jamie why he did not look back at him as he rode away from Helwater in season three, to which Jamie replies that he didn't want to give either of them false hope about seeing each other again. So, when William rides away from Fraser's Ridge, he makes sure to look back at Jamie; it's then that one must wonder if William has put it together that he's actually Jamie's son.
Since we're desperate to know the answer ourselves, we turned to an expert on Jamie and Willie's relationship: Sam Heughan. The actor told us in an interview that he thinks William knows on some level, and that this episode is one of the things he was most looking forward to filming in season four.
"The stuff with Willie, for me and for Jamie, was really interesting stuff, to see where that relationship has gone to and developed," says Heughan, adding that there was definitely "an awakening in Willie as to who his father might actually be."
"I was always looking forward to John Grey coming back, [and] I was definitely looking forward to those scenes," he said. "[David Berry and Oliver Finnegan] are great actors as well, so it was a nice side story for Jamie and Claire this season."
It will be interesting to see where the show continues to take the Jamie-John-William relationship. In the books, William is not seen again until late in Diana Gabaldon's sixth novel in the series, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, when the then-18-year-old soldier meets his half-sister, Brianna (Sophie Skelton). While Brianna knows who William is, William does not yet know that Jamie is his father and that Brianna is his sister. He doesn't discover the connection until late in book seven, when he finds himself in Jamie's company and finally sees the resemblance between them.
While Outlander has been renewed for seasons five and six, there is no word for any seasons beyond that, so perhaps the show wants to move up the William-Jamie timeline a bit and this most recent episode planted the seeds for that.
Welcome to Marwen: Steve Carell's New Movie Draws From an Emotional True Story
Over the course of his career, Steve Carell has taken on a gamut of different roles, from Dunder Mifflin's offbeat salesman Michael Scott to a cartoon supervillain turned curmudgeonly dad. In his upcoming biopic, Welcome to Marwen, the actor inhabits the role of Mark Hogancamp, a man who builds a miniature town of dolls after nearly dying from a violent attack. And yes, Hogancamp's real story is just as heartbreaking and full of resilience as one would imagine.
On April 8, 2000, five men beat Hogancamp outside of a bar in Kingston, NY, after he told them that he was a cross-dresser. The attack resulted in Hogancamp spending nine days in a coma and 40 days in the hospital. Along with post-traumatic stress disorder, he suffered brain damage that left him with little recall of his past life, which includes his experiences with homelessness, struggles with alcoholism, and past relationships. His last memory was of being in Ibiza in 1984 while serving in the Navy. Upon waking up, he needed to learn how to walk and talk again.
Marwencol became Hogancamp's alternative to therapy, which he could not afford. Located at the side of his trailer home, it's a 1/6th scale World War 2 town named after himself and two women that he had crushes on - Wendy and Colleen. Built from plywood and populated with Barbies and World War II action figures, the town blossomed into his own world. The stories that he creates focus on an American pilot that he fashioned after himself who's rescued and protected by the town's all-female population. He started using his Pentax to capture his stories, which detail sagas of violence, fear, and camaraderie.
One day, Hogancamp's neighbor David Naugle, a magazine photographer, felt curious about the project and asked to see the images. Astonished upon seeing the work, Naugle sent in the pictures to the art publication Esopus, which eventually covered Hogancamp's story. Photographs of Marwencol would grow popular over the years, landing in other art magazines, as well as galleries. Filmmaker Jeff Malmberg made Hogancamp's story the subject of his directorial debut, Marwencol, which took over four years to complete and garnered critical acclaim.
Headed by a cast of amazing actresses (including Leslie Mann, Merritt Wever, and Janelle Monáe) and anchored by a story full of hope, Welcome to Marwen is a timely film for the chaos of 2018. It'll come out just in time for the holidays on Dec. 21. Bring tissues, just in case.
The Umbrella Academy: Watch the Wickedly Fun Trailer For Netflix's New Superhero Series
If the recent X-Men movies had a better sense of humor about them, perhaps they would've ended up resembling something akin to Netflix's latest stab at the superhero genre: The Umbrella Academy, a TV series adapted from the comics created by My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá.
In the first trailer, we're introduced to a world where, on the same day in October 1989, 43 women around the world wake up and miraculously (and inexplicably) deliver babies, despite having shown no symptoms of pregnancy prior to that. Seven of those children are adopted by eccentric billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who intends to use their superhuman abilities to save the world by forming the Umbrella Academy. However, the family/team fractures in their teenage years, and they all go their own separate ways. Sorry, universe.
Fortunately, years later, six of the surviving 30-something members of the group - Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Vanya, and Number Five - find themselves back together when Hargreeves dies under mysterious circumstances, and they resolve to work together to figure out what's going on. With the threat of a global apocalypse imminent, the world will rely on them to save the day despite clashing personalities and abilities.
Tallulah's Ellen Page stars as Vanya, alongside Game of Thrones alum Tom Hopper (Luther), Genius's Robert Sheehan (Klaus), and Mary J. Blige as Cha-Cha, a time-traveling assassin. Sold yet? Watch the wickedly fun trailer above, which gives a taste of the stylish series to come as Tiffany's "I Think We're Alone Now" plays in the background.
All 10 episodes of The Umbrella Academy drop on Feb. 15.
