Oribe, Veteran Celebrity Hairstylist, Has Died at 62

Oribe Canales - renowned celebrity hairstylist and founder of his eponymous haircare line, Oribe - has died at 62, WWD confirmed. The cause of death was not immediately clear.

With a career that spanned more than three decades, Oribe's story could rival a song by Journey: it first began when the Cuban native immigrated to New York City in the late '80s, working with every supermodel from Naomi Campbell to Cindy Crawford. In the years that followed, he quickly became a fixture at fashion shows and red carpets, before going on to create a wildly successful namesake line of styling products in 2008.

Since the news of his death broke on Monday morning, there has been an outpouring of tributes from the people who worked with him, including Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Miley Cyrus, and Emily Ratajkowski.

Angela Ponce Is the First Transgender Woman to Compete in the Miss Universe Pageant

Catriona Gray of the Philippines may have claimed the Miss Universe crown on Sunday night, but she wasn't the only person who walked away from the night with a victory on her hands. Gray's fellow contestant Angela Ponce made history during the competition as the first openly transgender woman to compete in the pageant.

The 27-year-old was crowned Miss Spain back in June before heading to Bangkok, Thailand last week to compete with over 90 other competitors for the Miss Universe title. She didn't make it to the final round, but her presence in the competition still broke barriers. After being named Miss Spain, Ponce spoke to The Associated Press about her hopes of becoming a role model for young transgender children. "If my going through all this contributes to the world moving a little step forward, then that's a personal crown that will always accompany me," she said. Scroll ahead to see more photos of Ponce during Sunday night's competition.

Psst: Here Are My No-Fail Secrets to Getting the Perfect Winged Liner

My dramatic winged liner is usually the first thing people mention when they meet me. I've gotten comments like, "They're so perfect!" and "They're so sharp!" Well, I'd hope so - it took my 10 years to perfect.

I get it when people say they struggle with winged liner; my hand wasn't always the steadiest, and I did have to click around YouTube to see how to do it when I'd first started refining my technique. (Hint, it definitely takes practice and the right kind of pen.) In hopes to make it easier for first-timers, I'm sharing exactly how I apply my perfect cat-eye below.

  • Step 1: Pick your tool. For a super-sharp cat-eye, I gravitate toward waterproof liquid eyeliner pens that have ultra-precise felt tip applicators and a formula that has slip, but is not too watery. My favorite is the Dior Diorshow On-Stage Liner in Vinyl Black ($31).
  • Step 2: Line your lid up until the outer corner of your eye. Don't go any further.
  • Step 3: Start your wing from the outer corner of your eye, and extend the line toward the end of your eyebrow. Stop halfway between the start of your line and your eyebrow.
  • Step 4: Put the tip of your pen at the end of the line you just created, and drag your pen toward the line on your lid, and create a triangle.
  • Step 5: fill in the triangle.

There you have it - big bold, beautiful wings, in just five quick steps.

Cardi B's Latest Makeup Look Is Brought to You by This Sold-Out Pizza Palette

Update: Glamlite's pizza-themed makeup palette just got a seal of approval from Cardi B. The rapper's longtime makeup artist, Erika LaPearl, revealed via Instagram on Sunday that she used the "epic" pizza palette on Cardi B for her set at Rolling Loud Music Festival this past weekend. In a separate photo, LaPearl detailed what colors she used on the rapper to complement her eccentric costume, which was a red, lace bodysuit with a fringe trim. She used the shades Kalamata Olives, Ham, Marinara, and Prosciutto, with some glitter that she added for that extra bit of drama.

The Pizza Palette is currently sold out on the Glamlite website - it ended up selling out in just 48 hours - but, according to a representative for the brand, it's still available for pre-order and will be back in stock in coming weeks.

This story was originally published on Dec. 11.

If you can very easily be won over by the thought or promise of pizza in any form (specifically, that of makeup), then you'll be elated to discover that your love for the pie has been taken to brand-new heights. It comes in the form of a pizza-themed eye shadow palette that's currently making us wonder why we've never seen anything like it (and why we've yet to add it to our online shopping cart).

The palette was created by Glamlite Cosmetics after the company's founder, Gisselle Hernandez, decided to combine her love of pizza and cosmetics. It comes with 18 different shades, all of which are named after beloved pizza toppings. A few examples include Jalapeños, a shimmery, forest green shade; Hot Sauce, a scarlet color made to resemble the bright red hue of actual hot sauce; and Kalamata Olives, a deep purple. The only topping that doesn't seem to be included in the palette is anchovies, which is probably for obvious reasons. The Pizza Palette is available online at Glamlite.com, where it retails for $40. See more photos of the product ahead.

Just Try Not to Laugh as You Watch Tiffany Pollard's Fenty Beauty Video

"Y'all know that bad b*tch, who's bad enough to show up uninvited? Yeah, that's me."

That's just one of the many gems that Tiffany Pollard - aka New York, aka the "original HBIC" (as she introduces herself) - left us with in her makeup tutorial for Fenty Beauty. In the video she tests Fenty products (like the Killawatt Foil Freestyle Highlighter Palette and Diamond Bomb All-Over Diamond Veil) with her unfiltered opinion, telling us exactly what to wear during cuffing season or for the "b*tch that spit on you."

Watch it yourself below - just make sure you wait until you're alone, because you won't be able to get through it without laughing.

I've Been Obsessed With This $13 Mascara For Months, and It's Finally Coming to America

I get a lot of questions about my lashes and the mascara I use; it tends to come with the territory when you cover beauty products. People actually start by asking if I have lash extensions, and when I explain it's just the mascara, they light up. The good news? My current favorite is from a mass brand. Then I have to gently let them down: unfortunately, the product isn't available in America.

Until now.

Meet your new mascara obsession: L'Oréal Paris Unlimited Lash Lengthening and Lifting Mascara ($13). (I wish the name meant "unlimited" in terms of expiration, because I'm nearing the end of my bottle.) I was in Paris for Fashion Week with the brand, and Unlimited was part of my welcome bag, which included this Paris-only offering. Thankfully, the brand is launching the product in America come January.

As a devoted Voluminous and Lash Paradise fan, I had high hopes for Unlimited when I first gave it a go. It delivered. Initially, I was intrigued by the bottle. It's not a typical tube; it's not square or circular. "It looks like a buoy . . . you know, in the ocean. Or an inflatable punching bag," my boyfriend said when I asked him to describe the shape. He's not wrong. (Don't tell him I said that, thanks.) If it were glass, it might look like a gorgeous bottle for a fragrance. The real point of difference, though, is the wand, which actually changes angles for more precision when you apply. You can use it straight or click it into a 45-degree angle, which is meant to help you get to the root of your lashes better.

For me, I barely change the position of the wand because I find I can get to the root easily without doing so, but this extra addition can make your mascara application a lot better. I tend not to love rubber or silicone applicators because I feel they don't make the lashes look light and fluffy. Unlimited, however, separates them, lengthens, and volumizes without weighing them down. It's a creamy formula that coats the lashes without lumping them together and with no flakes. Because what's worse than a flake, in both mascara and your social life?

Keep reading to see the Parisian photo shoot of the bottle, plus how it looks with both one coat and two coats on the lashes.

And with this mix of options, that are as bomb as they are budget-friendly, you may even have a little left over to pick something out for yourself. Holiday happiness starts right here.

Benefit's Roller Lash Mascara Just Got An Exciting New Sister Product

This year, Benefit Cosmetics launched three products: Bad Gal Bang! Mascara, Hello Happy foundation, and Brow Contour Pro. It's been awhile since the brand launched an eyeliner - They're Real Gel Liner was born in 2014 - and given it was based around They're Real Mascara, it's time the brand's newest launch is in the liner category and fitting that it is a companion to a highly sought-after mascara.

Roller Liner ($22) is in the Roller Lash mascara family, hence the name. It's a felt-tipped liquid liner pen that promises a 24-hour matte finish that "doesn't drag or jag" and comes in black and brown. Currently, the brand has They're Real Gel Push-Up Liner and Bad Gal Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil. There's also Magic Ink, which is a liquid liner, but it's not in pen form, and it's only sold in the UK. If you found They're Real difficult to apply given its unique formula and applicator, it sounds like Roller Liner may be right up your alley.

We're testing the liner this week, and we'll be sure to report back to let you know if it really delivers. Eager to give it a try? It launches online and in stores on Jan. 4, 2019. Will you be rolling into 2019 with Roller Liner?

Pink's Newest Hairstyle Is Retro, but Damn, Does She Pull It Off

Pink has gone retro red for the holidays, and it looks amazing. The pop singer initially rose to fame with a spectrum of hair colors (including many different shades of pink) in out-of-the-box styles, and in recent years, she's been wearing her hair platinum blond (buzzed short on the sides and left long on top). Yesterday, she debuted a look that came straight from the '50s - with her hair bright red, in what looks like pin curls wrapped with a red fabric.

She captioned her first photo, "I really do love Lucy." To the Lucille Ball-inspired look, we say: same.

This Is How You Should Really Be Removing Individual False Lashes

The quest for long lashes is a constant and sometimes expensive one. If you don't want to go the lash lift or lash growth serum route, the other option is false eyelashes. Falsies require careful application and even more careful removal.

Many people (including Meghan Markle on her wedding day) opt for individual lashes to boost the fullness of their own with more control than you get with full strip lashes. Individuals give subtle but effective results, but there are extra steps that need to be taken to not damage natural lashes in the process. We enlisted the help of eyelash expert Loreta Jasilionyte to find how to remove individual lashes without ripping out all your precious real ones.

"The safest method is to use a micro swab or cotton bud, wet the swab slightly with water, and gently brush across the bonding area," she said. The individual falsies should lift and slide away from your natural lashes quite smoothly; follow this with an oil-based cleanser to melt away any remaining glue.

Of course, individual false lashes are very different than pro-applied lash extensions. In those cases, Jasilionyte suggests visiting a lash technician to get those removed safely.

The Pros and Cons of Getting a Lash Lift

Google's Year in Search for 2018 told us that lashes were a huge trend in the treatment category, with one of the most sought-after answers being "what is a lash lift?" Lash lifts, or lash perms, are a service in which a chemical solution is applied to your lashes to keep them curled. Afterward, you'll have lifted lashes without a lash curler or waterproof mascara. The service is typically paired with a lash tint, depending on if your technician is licensed to do so.

I personally started getting this service in late 2017, and the response from friends, family, and strangers has been surprising. There's a genuine curiosity about the treatment and whether it is a better alternative to lash extensions. Nothing is perfect, so allow me to explain the pros and the cons of lash perms and extensions.

Is Patrick Starrr's $40 MAC Powder Joining the Permanent Line?

Influencer Patrick Starrr is rounding out his fifth and final collection with MAC Cosmetics, bringing back the cult favorite Patrick's Powder as part of his holiday Slay Ride collection. The powder has sold out since it dropped online earlier this month.

Starrr himself posted about the collection and the powder in particular, saying "I know the powder is sold out online! @MacCosmetics is trying their best to restock!" However, fans are a bit confused.

The brand has replied to several fans of the powder and Slay Ride collection, commenting that they have no plans to restock either. Fans also asked if they would consider making Patrick's Powder, a finely milled, translucent matte setting powder, part of the permanent MAC Cosmetics line. (We're big fans of it as well here at POPSUGAR.) While a few responses from the brand said they would "note customers' wishes," without confirming anything, one particular comment from Nov. 11 is causing speculation.

Gossip Youtube Account HereFortheTea2 points out that on one of the posts promoting Starrr's collection on the brand's Instagram, user thats_moore_likeit said, "Make this powder permanent!!! (sic) MY FAV for my kit!!!" MAC Cosmetics responds with "Your wish is granted! #MACPatrickStarrr Setting Powder is here to stay! Be sure to sign up for alerts so that you don't miss a thing at maccosmetics.com/country."

When the user asked if the brand was serious, they confirmed.

We reached out to MAC directly to clear up the confusion. "Right now we don't have any plans to restock the powder or add to our permanent line," a representative for the brand said. We followed up to ask about the comments made on the brand's Instagram, in which they responded that the brand's responses "were definitely misleading/unclear and future responses will be updated."

Khloé Kardashian and Malika Haqq's Becca Cosmetics Line Is Here (and OMG, It's Beautiful)

If you've kept up with Khloé Kardashian for the 15 seasons her family has been on the air, you'll know that she and Malika Haqq go way back. Now, the best friends are teaming up with Becca Cosmetics for a collection of high-shine palettes and lipsticks. The Becca BFF Collection is coming soon, and we're ready for it.

The pair has been raiding each other's makeup stashes for years. "Khloé has always had a very extensive range of makeup," Malika told POPSUGAR, "I've always played in it, and I have to say, I was introduced to highlighters by her." Khloé loves a different one of Malika's makeup products. "I know we're obviously two different skin colors, but I could still use Malika's bronzers. I could still - I might use them for contouring or other things; but we definitely could still share each other's makeup." You can expect both products in the new collection.

The collection will include two bronzing, blush, and highlighting palettes, four shades of lipsticks (including a warm red, true red, pink-nude, and neutral beige that were created to fit Khloé and Malika's undertones), and Glow Letters (a pot of tiny baked highlighters in the shape of X's, O's, and hearts that are in bronze and champagne shades).

The collection is hitting stores on Dec. 22. You can preview the whole line, ahead.

If Merriam-Webster's Word of the Year Comes as a Surprise, You Haven't Been Paying Attention

Merriam-Webster announced its timely Word of the Year: justice. Defined by the dictionary as the "conformity to truth, fact, or reason," among others, searches for the word were reportedly up 74 percent this year on the Merriam-Webster website. Beyond statistical reasoning, however, the word relates to significant events and headlines in 2018.

For starters, there's the ongoing investigation, led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, into the 2016 presidential election and interference from Russia. Another relevant event that comes to mind is the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing concerning the sexual assault allegations made against now-Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. As the world watched on Sept. 27, the tense hearing saw testimonies from both parties and impassioned bipartisan debates.

In addition to "justice," Merriam-Webster's other prominent words for the year include "nationalism," a word with racist and xenophobic connotations that was used by President Donald Trump at an Oct. 22 rally in Texas, and "pansexual," which Janelle Monáe used to describe her sexual orientation in an interview with Rolling Stone. Meanwhile, the words "respect," "maverick," and "excelsior" are also on the list, as they relate to three prominent figures who passed away this year: Aretha Franklin, John McCain, and Stan Lee.

Merriam-Webster's previous Word of the Year for 2017 was "feminism," which was shaped by the historic Women's March at the start of the year, as well as the #MeToo movement and pop culture releases like The Handmaid's Tale and Wonder Woman.

These Are the Foods Ilana Ate to Lose 100 Pounds and Become a Beachbody Nutritionist

When you look at Ilana Muhlstein, RD, creator of Beachbody's 2B Mindset, a video-based weight-loss program that revamps your diet, you might think she's been slim her whole life. She is a shining beacon of health, after all. But Ilana started from a place many people are familiar with, and she had to work hard to change her life and eating habits around. Read her full story ahead.

Ilana: Before

When Ilana weighed her heaviest, 215 pounds, she didn't feel like she was able to truly enjoy her life. "I realized that I had so much energy and positivity to share with the world, but my exterior wasn't matching the way I really felt or wanted to live," she told POPSUGAR. "I became fed up with making excuses for my weight and started accepting the fact that I could take control of it instead. Also, my size 20 jeans were becoming snug and I knew size 22 would mean I couldn't even fit into Gap and Old Navy's extended sizes, and I would finally be forced to shop in plus-size-only stores. This was a particularly difficult thing to accept given that my friends at the time were still shopping in juniors sections."

She thought about what had caused the weight gain in the first place and couldn't pinpoint one thing specifically. She said it stemmed from all sorts of things, including her "love and preoccupation with food for pleasure, stress relief, boredom, social engagement, and overall mindlessness." She tried all sorts of things to lose the weight, from Weight Watchers to "weight-loss camp," but nothing really stuck for her. She lost 25 pounds at the camp, but realized that wasn't enough to feel and experience a big difference in her life.

"I then took my weight-loss journey into my own hands with the principles that are now 2B Mindset," she said. "From my highest to my lowest weight, I lost 100 pounds." She never counted calories because she finds that practice to be very frustrating and "calories on food labels and restaurants can be extremely inaccurate."

Ilana: After

She ate a lot of whole foods on a regular basis. These are some of the staples she keeps in her fridge: baby carrots, coleslaw mixes, bell peppers, cauliflower heads, and turnips. She also stocks "lots of lean, easy proteins like eggs, egg whites, Greek yogurt cups, and string cheese." She likes to eat fruits, high-fiber tortillas, "and definitely always some good bottled salad dressings, marinades, and marinara for quick meal assembling on busier days."

She eventually took all of the good habits and practices that she developed and created the weight-loss program 2B Mindset. It was done "with a lot of trial and error, patience, a positive outlook, and an open mind." This program "touches on the nutritional aspect of weight loss, but it also uncovers the behavioral and emotional aspect of eating as well."

"There are hundreds of diets and prescribed meals plans that simply tell you what to eat and not to eat," Ilana explained. "The 2B Mindset goes much further to explain how to approach real-life eating situations and scenarios so you are set up for success wherever you are. So not only can you lose weight when you are focused and prepared, you will also be able to lose weight while enjoying yourself on a vacation, through the holiday season, or even while undergoing an emotional or stressful time."

Ilana didn't believe in entirely eliminating food groups or desserts, so she instead chose to shift her mindset and cravings "in a more productive and positive way." That's why she created 2B Mindset with a "framework for success and the best recommendations and structure," but she also left room for "variability and flexibility" so everyone could feel like it was tailored specifically to them, because no two people are the same.

Ilana is a new mom, so she says she'll be back to her lowest weight in two to three months. "Thankfully I really kept a healthy 2B Mindset throughout pregnancy and only gained 31 pounds while staying active," she shared. She loves to go to Spin, boxing, or Pilates classes. "But my mainstay is power Vinyasa yoga. Nothing makes me feel longer, leaner, and happier than doing yoga three to four times a week," she said.

When we asked Ilana to share some of her favorite nonscale victories, she said, "My first Summer without chub rub (irritation between my thighs) felt like a dream come true! I used to have to use baby powder in between my legs to control the pain and redness, and once I realized I was wearing shorts on a really hot day and my thighs weren't burning, I felt like I made it! Also, just simple things like being able to shop for clothes easier and wear dresses, feeling confident working out in just a sports bra, not feeling like I need to crop my body out of photos - I could go on and on!"

As for advice for people on their own weight-loss journeys, Ilana has a lot to say. "Go in with the mindset that if you focus on it and do it in a smart, sensible, and sustainable way, then this should really be the last time you ever have to lose weight again," she told POPSUGAR. "Sure, you'll always want to prioritize your health and may need to lose a couple of pounds in the future following a long vacation or holiday season, but ultimately, you should take this time as a learning opportunity and means of creating a healthy and positive lifestyle for yourself. And if done right, then the more effort you put into it, the more effortless it should later feel to sustain."

I'm Lazy and a Horrible Cook, but I Still Manage to Meal Prep - Here's How I Do It

My husband watches a lot of Chopped and Iron Chef. I think it's escapism for him because our kitchen is more like American Horror Story than Top Chef. Not that he's any better - his idea of cooking is heating up a Tombstone pizza. Sure, my cooking skills aren't going to win me any awards (or win over any friends at dinner parties), but eating at home and prepping meals for the week is still important.

If I meal prep for the week ahead, I know I'll have enough food for healthy lunches and dinners so I won't be tempted to eat out. Who do I look like, Oprah Winfrey? Like Oprah, I love bread. Unlike Oprah, I am not a billionaire (yet!) and certainly can't afford to dine out more than a couple times a week. Eating out in New York is expensive, y'all, and I would rather save my hard-earned cash than spend it on a predictable chopped salad down the street.

All of this is to say: I frequently meal prep. But I'm pretty bad at cooking; one time I thought when a recipe called for a clove of garlic, it actually meant a bulb of garlic, so I sautéed enough full cloves of garlic to kill a vampire. Then there was the time I didn't know what "brown the ground turkey" meant, so I had to google it and then call my sister. But a few years (and many, many mistakes) later, I've collected enough meal-prep hacks to actually make it worth my time.

Will you be seeing me on the Food Network anytime soon? Probably not. But I can make enough meals to last me a few days that are edible and sometimes even tasty! It's not like I have all day Sunday to devote to meal prep - I have mimosas to drink and Law & Order: SVU marathons to watch. So here are the seven hacks my husband and I use regularly to make sure meal prep is as easy and efficient as possible.

Are Carbs Killing Your Metabolism? This Is What a Doctor Says

The low-carb vs. high-carb debate for anything - weight loss, athletic performance, overall better nutrition - will probably never end, but that's OK. Ultimately, it's about finding what works the best for your lifestyle, body type, and nutritional needs.

Because we know that low-carb diets like the keto diet can affect our blood sugar levels, we wanted to know how our macronutrient profile, specifically carbohydrates, can affect our metabolism. To find out more, POPSUGAR spoke to Holly Lofton, MD, director of the medical weight management program at NYU.

Our metabolism is a complex process that relates to how our body produces energy from fat, sugar, and protein and how it stores that energy. Usually, when people talk about metabolism, they're referring to their metabolic rate - how much energy/calories their body is able to burn in a period of time. The more energy your body is able to produce, the quicker your metabolism will be.

Foods with a smaller thermic effect, how much energy it takes for your body to burn food, require less energy to process, which means your body doesn't have to work hard to burn it. In contrast, foods with a larger thermic effect require more energy to burn and process, which means your body will work harder and burn more energy.

"A higher carbohydrate macronutrient profile likely has a smaller thermic effect of food," Dr. Lofton told POPSUGAR. Just because carbohydrates have a smaller thermic effect, doesn't mean you should begin following the low-carb, high-fat keto diet right away. Eating a moderate amount of carbs won't slow down your metabolism, but "it doesn't boost it much," Dr. Lofton explained.

How many carbohydrates you need to consume a day will vary for each person and is determined by variables such as your height, weight, physical activity, and goals. Generally speaking, Dr. Lofton recommends your macronutrient split consist of a greater amount of protein and a moderate amount of carbs and fats.

If you're interested in more ways you can boost your metabolism, Dr. Lofton said to focus on building more muscle (because muscle is metabolically active and requires more energy) and to be more active in general. Here's a four-week beginner's weightlifting program you can start following to build muscle.

Jason Momoa Reveals the "Coolest" Thing About Playing Aquaman, and It's NOT His Trident

I imagine there are plenty of perks to being Aquaman. Breathing underwater, for example, seems pretty sweet, as does superhuman strength and being able to command sharks to do your bidding. But according to Jason Momoa, current star of Aquaman, the most exciting part of playing the aqua-inclined superhero has nothing to do with his abilities or even that shiny gold trident.

During a recent interview with Us Weekly, Momoa shared that although he was nervous about his kids seeing him in the film, ultimately, their reactions are what he says is the "coolest" part of the entire process.

"The colors are very loud. I'm curious to see my face attached to that body. I feel like the most intimate part of it was being in it and looking at people's faces," he said. "The coolest moment was probably when I got on the phone and I FaceTimed my kids and I saw their faces and saw my wife's face!"

Momoa has been with wife Lisa Bonet since 2005 (they tied the knot in 2017), and the couple shares two children: 11-year-old Lola and 9-year-old Nakoa-Wolf. Momoa even brought them along to the Aquaman premiere in LA and performed the Haka with his children on the red carpet, as a nod to his Maori culture.

"When the trailer had come out, my wife had thankfully held up showing [the kids]. I came home, and I got to experience them watching it for the first time," the Game of Thrones alum continued. "My kids were like, 'Papa, you're so cool.' It was the whole reason to be able to do it, just to be able to have my kids be able to watch something like that. They were with me on Justice League and Aquaman, but when it's all done, and you see it - and they're the perfect age. I'm very, very lucky to experience it with them."

See Momoa's sweet interactions with his family on the red carpet, ahead.

The Sweet, Simple Reason Julie Andrews Isn't in Mary Poppins Returns

It's one of the most anticipated movies of the holiday season: Mary Poppins Returns, the sequel to the beloved 1964 Disney classic. Starring Emily Blunt as the practically perfect nanny, the movie centers on the grown-up Banks children, as well as Michael Banks's three young children. There are plenty of nostalgic moments in the movie, from the charming soundtrack that would make the Sherman brothers proud to the showstopping cameo by original star Dick Van Dyke. But what about the original Mary Poppins, Dame Julie Andrews herself? Blunt has taken on the role, since Mary Poppins doesn't age and human actors do, but could Andrews appear, as Van Dyke does, in a smaller role?

Andrews does not make even a cameo appearance in the new movie, and there's a very sweet reason. Director Rob Marshall told Variety that he immediately approached her about the possibility, but she turned it down to keep the focus on the new cast and new story.

"She immediately said no . . . She said, 'This is Emily's show and I want her to run with this. She should run with this. This is hers. I don't want to be on top of that,'" Marshall explained. The team hadn't pitched a specific role when they approached Andrews, but it made no difference: she wanted to be out of the picture so Blunt could wholly make the role her own. Blunt echoed the same sentiments as Marshall:

"[Andrews] said to Rob, 'Do you know what this is? This is Emily's version of her and I don't want it to be that she's playing Mary Poppins the whole way through but then I come in and there's like oh, but there's the real Mary Poppins, you know?'"

Andrews did, however, give her full blessing and stamp of approval to Blunt's casting before staying at a gracious distance. That's a move as proper and polite as Poppins herself!

Outlander: The Tragic Connection Between Frank and Laoghaire You Might Not Have Picked Up On

Warning: Spoilers for Outlander season four below!

The latest Outlander episode, titled "Down the Rabbit Hole," sees the return of a couple of familiar faces in Tobias Menzies's Frank and Nell Hudson's Laoghaire, which may have come as a bit of a surprise - even to book readers, in Frank's case. But executive producer Maril Davis tells POPSUGAR that doing a Frank episode was on their minds from very early on in plotting out season four, even though he doesn't really appear in Diana Gabaldon's Drums of Autumn.

In the episode, the main thrust of the action is that Brianna (Sophie Skelton) travels through the stones to 1760s Scotland. But this is juxtaposed with flashbacks to her final months with her father, Frank (Menzies), which the writers' room thought was an important thing to include in Brianna's journey.

"We decided fairly early on that part of the story would involve Frank because in talking about Brianna's journey and her going back, the fact that she's never met her birth father and was raised by another man for the first 20 years of her life and that's the only father she's ever known . . . how torn she would feel, as a character?" says Davis, adding that Brianna is wrestling with feelings of guilt over her perceived betrayal of the man who raised her.

"'This is my father and the only father I've ever known and now I'm going to go meet my other father, and how will I love them both? And would Frank have approved?' And all the stuff going through her head," Davis explains. "It was such an interesting way to show her journey and her struggle."

The writers also loved the idea of bringing Frank's last days to life, since viewers and book readers don't really know much about the night of the accident that took his life.

"Once he and Claire had that fight and he walked out that door, we don't know what happened to him," says Davis. "We obviously never saw the car crash. But we love the idea of tracing back and finding out that Frank asked Brianna to go to Cambridge with him and that they had a conversation right before he died. For Brianna, that torment of 'if I had only said something different in that car that night, would he still be here?' That guilt she carries with her is so interesting and important."

While the writers had Frank's storyline for this episode planned out far in advance, the same cannot be said for the Laoghaire storyline in Scotland. Davis told us that they originally planned to have Brianna meet her Aunt Jenny, played by Laura Donnelly, like she does in the book. Unfortunately, they couldn't work out the schedule with Donnelly, but as they worked out the alternative storyline featuring Laoghaire, they realized that Laoghaire actually makes a perfect parallel story for Frank.

"What tragic figures Laoghaire and Frank are, to love people that never loved them back and to really be tormented."

"It's interesting, the parallels between Laoghaire's story and Frank's story. The fact that Laoghaire and Frank both loved Jamie and Claire, and Jamie and Claire both left them, then came back into their lives and then left them again - what tragic figures Laoghaire and Frank are, to love people that never loved them back and to really be tormented," says Davis. "You're never going to feel that sorry for Laoghaire and Frank, obviously you're pulling for Jamie and Claire, but [Laoghaire and Frank] been so affected by these two people in their lives and the trajectory of their lives have been completely changed by them."

It makes a lot of sense from a storytelling standpoint, and Davis says they like it when they can surprise even longtime book readers. When POPSUGAR remarks that it'd be fun if they could find a way for Menzies to return every season, Davis laughs and says that they're "thrilled" if they surprised viewers with Frank's return because they were worried news had leaked from the day he filmed. She also agrees that it'd be great if Menzies returned because he's a "lovely man" and "a wonderful actor."

Outlander Just Made a Significant Change to Brianna's Character From the Books - Here's Why

Some Outlander fans were undoubtedly surprised by the events of the most recent episode, titled "Down the Rabbit Hole." Not only are Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) absent, but there are a couple of surprising faces that pop up over the course of the hour. Plus, Brianna's (Sophie Skelton) time in Scotland on her way to 1760s America is quite different than it is written in the book. Read on to find out why the Outlander writers made these changes, but be warned: spoilers to follow!

Book readers know that originally when Brianna travels to Scotland, she makes her way to Lallybroch and meets not only her Uncle Ian (Steven Cree) but also her Aunt Jenny (Laura Donnelly) and several of her cousins. They welcome her with open arms, the only blemish on the otherwise happy family reunion being when Laoghaire (Nell Hudson) shows up, ranting and raving about how Jamie belongs to her and that Claire stole him away with her witchcraft.

In the show, Brianna is actually taken in by Laoghaire after collapsing in the cold wilderness. It isn't until much later that Laoghaire's "truth" about Claire and Jamie comes out - because neither woman knows who the other one is in the context of Claire and Jamie.

It certainly makes for an interesting story, but we'd be lying if we said we weren't sad that we didn't get to see Brianna meet her Fraser family. As it turns out, that made the Outlander writers sad as well, but it couldn't be helped.

Laura Donnelly as Jenny.

"Originally, when we started the season, we had every intention of taking [Brianna] to Lallybroch and having a Jenny-Brianna story . . . but sadly Laura Donnelly was not available," executive producer Maril Davis explained to POPSUGAR. "We actually really dragged our feet on that one because we had a story all ready and a script ready and we were all excited about it, and she had other commitments and was just not able to come back."

"We just adore her - not just Laura, but the character of Jenny - but she just wasn't able to do it," Davis added. "So at the last minute we had to struggle to find another story to do in this episode because for us, it's really about Jenny and Brianna and that relationship when she was going to Lallybroch."

Now, the writers knew they were going to include Laoghaire in the story "in some way," just like how she appears at Lallybroch in the book. So, as they got to talking about that, they decided focusing on Laoghaire could be a really interesting way to take this episode.

"The more we talked about Laoghaire, the more we thought what an interesting conversation that would be, if Brianna ran into Laoghaire and didn't know who she was," said Davis. "Certainly Claire has shared some of her journey with Brianna and has certainly shared this story, but the likelihood of Brianna necessarily remembering Laoghaire's name out of context, if she met her randomly, isn't something we thought she would do. And we liked the idea of seeing Laoghaire as a normal person. What would she be like if she weren't a crazy person? She's obviously a good mom. And it's interesting to meet Laoghaire without any expectations of what we know of her in the past."

"And it's interesting to meet Laoghaire without any expectations of what we know of her in the past."

Another reason the writers thought Laoghaire's tale would fit in well with this episode is because they had already decided to juxtapose Brianna's time in Scotland with flashbacks to her time with Frank (Tobias Menzies) before he died. As the writers worked out Laoghaire's story, they realized that Frank and Laoghaire actually pair very well together in an episode because they have "parallel" stories when it comes to Claire and Jamie.

It actually makes a lot of sense to take an episode without Claire and Jamie and focus on the people who are basically the anti-Claire and Jamie. And regardless of how you feel about the characters, Menzies and Hudson are talented actors, so it's kind of fun to see them pop up unexpectedly from time to time. Thumbs up, Outlander.

6 Reasons You Should See The Cher Show on Broadway ASAP

How well do you know Cher? No, seriously - how well do you really know her? Well, regardless of whether you're a scholar on the icon or the type of casual fan who just belts "If I Could Turn Back Time" in the shower, Broadway's The Cher Show will make you love her more than ever.

The production, which I recently had the pleasure of checking out in New York's Neil Simon Theatre, is a glitzy, glamorous, endorphin-fueled trip through Cher's spectacular career. While it tends to stick to the lighthearted, surface things rather than digging into the more serious downs the 72-year-old faced on her road to superstardom, it will likely be impossible to wipe the smile off your face for hours after walking out of the theater. And isn't that something worth cheering about?

Below, see why The Cher Show needs to be on your list of musicals to see ASAP.

The Confirmed Doctor Strange Sequel Is Almost Like a Spoiler For Avengers: Endgame

After months of wondering whether or not there would be a Doctor Strange sequel, we have pretty solid confirmation that it is, indeed, a thing. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel has finalized a deal with the director, and the search for a screenwriter is underway. Given the fact that the latest Marvel phase will end with the highly anticipated Avengers: Endgame in April 2019, the Doctor Strange sequel would effectively launch us into the fourth phase of the ever-expanding universe. This, of course, carries great weight when you consider the cliffhanger at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. Let's dig into the possible ramifications (and more sequel news!) ahead.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: The (Likely) Real-Life Inspirations Behind Declan Howell

In The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's second season, our intrepid heroine Midge Maisel faces down that dilemma that's been haunting creative professionals forever: What is the cost of creativity and art? While some of her conflict stems from her wild, complicated family situation and her tangled love life, she's also questioning how much she's willing to put into her career, even at the expense of other aspects of her life. That inner conflict is put on full display in the seventh episode of the season, where Midge meets Declan Howell (played by The Man in the High Castle's Rufus Sewell), a drunken but brilliant painter.

Declan's role in the story is fairly simple: to represent, both for Midge and for viewers, the dark, lonely, and sometimes brutal side of being an artist. He creates spectacular art, but his pursuits cost him his home life and his family, leaving him alone in a filthy studio with an abusive landlord. While Declan Howell wasn't a real person, unlike some other characters Midge encounters, he serves as an amalgamation of the male painters like him from that era.

The character, placed in the downtown Manhattan art scene of the 1950s, seems likely to be inspired by abstract expressionist artists of the era, like Jackson Pollock - who gets name-dropped in a story Declan tells about a particular painting of his. Pollock was famously reclusive and alcoholic, but regarded as one of the most important artists of his generation. Other artists named in the episode include Franz Kline, whose artistic legacy has always been confused by his refusal to discuss or assign meaning to his art, and Robert Motherwell, who had three marriages end in divorce.

While actor Sewell and creator Amy Sherman-Palladino have not spoken publicly about the inspiration for the character of Declan, it seems likely that these artists mentioned as his contemporaries formed the basis for this small but crucial role.

The Umbrella Academy: Watch the Wickedly Fun Trailer For Netflix's New Superhero Series

If the recent X-Men movies had a better sense of humor about them, perhaps they would've ended up resembling something akin to Netflix's latest stab at the superhero genre: The Umbrella Academy, a TV series adapted from the comics created by My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá.

In the first trailer, we're introduced to a world where, on the same day in October 1989, 43 women around the world wake up and miraculously (and inexplicably) deliver babies, despite having shown no symptoms of pregnancy prior to that. Seven of those children are adopted by eccentric billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who intends to use their superhuman abilities to save the world by forming the Umbrella Academy. However, the family/team fractures in their teenage years, and they all go their own separate ways. Sorry, universe.

Fortunately, years later, six of the surviving 30-something members of the group - Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Vanya, and Number Five - find themselves back together when Hargreeves dies under mysterious circumstances, and they resolve to work together to figure out what's going on. With the threat of a global apocalypse imminent, the world will rely on them to save the day despite clashing personalities and abilities.

Tallulah's Ellen Page stars as Vanya, alongside Game of Thrones alum Tom Hopper (Luther), Genius's Robert Sheehan (Klaus), and Mary J. Blige as Cha-Cha, a time-traveling assassin. Sold yet? Watch the wickedly fun trailer above, which gives a taste of the stylish series to come as Tiffany's "I Think We're Alone Now" plays in the background.

All 10 episodes of The Umbrella Academy drop on Feb. 15.
