This 1 Hack Completely Saves My Sanity While Traveling With My Kids During the Holidays
Holiday travel is always crazy, but it's especially chaotic and stressful when you have kids. The traffic, the crowded airports, the rest-stops, the long lines, and did I mention the traffic? No matter how you get around during the holiday season, it's usually never entirely pleasant. When I was a kid, it was all about long road trips to visit family. And since I never enjoyed being in the car for long stretches of time, my mom came up with a genius idea to keep me entertained; every hour - if my brothers and I behaved - we would each get one mystery bag with some little activity inside that would hopefully keep us occupied until the next bag, and the next, until finally, we'd arrive at our destination. While I give my mom full credit on this one, I'm far too lazy to make individual bags for each of my kids for every hour we're in the car, so I came up with my own hack to keep them happy: road trip baskets.
The first time I used these [travel] baskets on a six-hour road trip with two kids, it was the easiest trip we'd ever taken.
My family and I mostly travel up and down the East Coast by car, but this one big travel hack could work for planes and trains as well. It keeps my kids occupied, keeps me from hearing the dreaded "Are we there yet?" question a thousand times, and ultimately keeps me sane on the usually dangerous roads full of other holiday travelers. Each child gets one basket, and inside are crafts, books, activities, and snacks to keep them busy for hours. I put them in an easy-to-reach spot and my kids can take out whatever they want whenever they want without having to ask me. The first time I used these baskets on a six-hour road trip with two kids, it was the easiest trip we'd ever taken. Since that trip, I've made countless baskets and am currently working on a few for the upcoming holidays.
I don't love giving my kids a ton of screen time, so plugging them in for a six-hour trip isn't very appealing to me. But there's a definite time and place for kids to lose themselves in a TV show or movie, and a long stretch of traveling is one of them. We use tablets as backups, but they aren't the main focus of the trip. I wait until the right time to pull movies out like when they're overtired or melting down in a traffic jam. But until that happens, their road trip baskets are the focus, and they really do love it.
The first thing I do to create these baskets is think about each child's current interests and what keeps them entertained. I pack some of their favorite books and toys, but also introduce new things to keep them intrigued. Once I've put together in my head what will excite them, I begin collecting things they might like. I shop on Amazon, hit the dollar bins at Target, and scour the Dollar Tree shelves for little trinkets, toys, puzzles, books, and games with not too many pieces that will get lost in car seats. Big hits have included dry erase boards (bonus if it's magnetic), mini action figures, interlocking blocks or beads, interactive books (electronic or pop-up/pull-out pages), magnetic tiles, water paint books, and road trip bingo boards.
We also head to the library before the trip and I let the kids pick out books on CD that they can play on the DVD player and follow along with. Another thing my oldest really enjoys is her very own road trip binder. For this, I bought a three-ring binder with sheet protectors and a few three-ring pencil cases which I loaded up with new crayons and markers. I filled the sheet protectors with pages I printed off the internet or tore from an age-appropriate workbook like mazes, I-Spy pictures, or connect-the-dot pages. Because they can be wiped off, the sheet protectors provide a place for the kids to do a page more than once or erase mistakes. Behind the sheet protector pages, I also put in some blank construction paper and another pencil case filled with stickers, stamps, and fun rolls of tape for them to create whatever they want.
When it comes to traveling with kids, snacks are key, and I always make sure to pack goodies in their baskets. I try to make it a mix of their go-to snacks and some things they aren't usually allowed to have. It's a balance of salty and sweet, so there's always something they're in the mood for and they can't tell me there's nothing they want (well, they could, but spicing up the snack department helps curb the hunger complaints).
The road trip baskets have been a traveling lifesaver for us, and they're so easy to recreate with your own unique spin. It could be a backpack full of things for a long flight or a bag for each child to rummage through on a long train ride. The possibilities are endless, and you can tailor everything to each child. It's also pretty fun keeping everything a surprise until the kids are packed up and ready for travel. If I'm ever worried they'll blow through everything quickly because they're so excited to see all the new things in the basket, I keep a few things in a bag in the front seat with me, because this mom has always got a few tricks up her sleeve.

4 Survival Tips For LGBTQ+ Folks Heading Home For the Holidays
Going home for the holidays and being with the family can be stressful for many people, but it can be even tougher for LGBTQIA+ folks. While you may be totally comfortable with who you are and have worked hard to be mature and have a sense of self-worth, dealing with certain family members may result in feelings of disappoint and rejection. Family members who have a lack of understanding or aren't accepting can be really difficult to handle, especially considering they are the people who are supposed to love you the most. Although tensions may be running high and there are certain conversations you may be dreading, these four tips can relieve you of some the stressful situations you find may yourself in.
1. Set Aside Time For Self-Care
This may sound obvious, but practicing self-care is one of the most important things you can do for yourself year round, and especially during the holidays. As LGBTQ+ poet and cultural icon Audre Lorde famously wrote, "Caring for myself is not self-indulgence; it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare." It can be as simple as reading a book, taking a walk, meditating, having a glass of wine, or just putting time aside for you to do things that make yourself feel good.
When you're home, this might be easiest thing to do, but one option could be to stay in your room a bit longer so you are able to have adequate space. You could also offer to run an errand so you can get some along time and even do something else for yourself while you are out so you can feel ready to face the world. During the holidays, it may be tough to get that "you time" in, but make it a point to give yourself the care you need.
While it may be important for your family to understand you, you do not have to defend your choices or who you are.
2. Set Personal Boundaries
Setting boundaries is a crucial aspect of healthy relationships with anyone. When it comes to your family, though, setting those boundaries can sometimes be more difficult. Because they are family, they may feel that you owe them or they are entitled to an explanation for where you are in life, the current relationship you are in, or about your sexual or gender identity. The fact of the matter is, you don't owe them that. While it may be important for your family to understand you, you do not have to defend your choices or who you are. If you find yourself getting into a stressful conversation over the holiday dinner table about a partner, your sexual or gender identity, or another topic you don't want to address, simply change the subject. If Aunt Helen starts to grill you about your sleeping arrangements with your significant other over the holidays, for example, commenting on how delicious the food is or bringing up a previous happy memory from another holiday will often be just enough of a shift to change the conversation and hopefully help you get your holiday back on track.
If you are still uncomfortable, it may be helpful to take that person aside later on when your guests have left and express how you feel. Using language like "I felt that when you brought up x it was inappropriate and made me feel uncomfortable" can help make the conversation go more smoothly; approaching the interaction calmly and respectfully can help illustrate the point and highlight the boundary you are trying to set.
3. Anticipate Some of the Touchy Topics That May Come Up
One part of making the trip home may be mentally preparing yourself for potentially awkward or upsetting conversations. If Uncle Bob is a conservative Republican who has posted on Facebook in support of Donald Trump's ban on transgender individuals in the military, anticipating some of the things that that may come up during your trip home for the holidays can help better prepare you to respond accordingly - or not at all. Trying to visualize some of the conversations that may take place and having an answer prepared or simply remembering to take deep breaths can help you to keep your cool. Although you may be all about engaging in discourse, you probably don't want to feel like you have to defend your identity, beliefs, and choices when you are simply trying to enjoy a piece of pumpkin pie. Preparing a simple statement that reinforces who you are and shuts down hateful rhetoric around major topics in the news or just planning to say "we can agree to disagree" can help get the dinner back on track and save your sanity.
4. Have Your Bestie on Speed Dial
Alternative kinship is deeply important in the LGBTQ+ community. While you can't pick your blood relatives, you can pick your friends and those whom you choose to call family as an adult. It's vital to feel heard, and during the holidays, it may be vital to have your best friend on speed dial. Make it a point to check in with them throughout the day and vice versa. Having a friend to vent to can help alleviate some of the stressful situations you may find yourself in, and it may help you work through them in another way.

How to Catch a Glimpse of the Rare "Christmas Comet" in All Its Twinkly Glory This Week
Source: NICOLAS BIVER/AFP/Getty Images
Even the stars are celebrating the holidays this year. The 46P/Wirtanen comet, aptly nicknamed the "Christmas Comet" and first observed 70 years ago, was at its most visible in centuries on Sunday night. The twinkling comet set off a greenish glow into the sky, and at its point nearest the Earth, was about 30 times as far away as the moon.
"This will be the closest comet Wirtanen has come to Earth for centuries and the closest it will come to Earth for centuries," NASA scientist Paul Chodas said in a statement.
The location of the comet changes each night, but EarthSky has created a chart to plot its path so you can find out where in the sky to look for it as it passes by our planet. While the comet may be hard to spot with the naked eye, Chodas told NBC News "there's no harm in trying." Dedicated amateur astrologers may be better off using assistive gear like binoculars while the comet is still visible over the next few days.

Jason Momoa Is an Expert in Pushing Away Boyfriends, Thanks to All His Funny Photo Requests
It's no secret Jason Momoa has a lot of fans. If you need proof, just listen to the cheers that erupted recently when he performed the haka with his kids at the Aquaman premiere. Turns out Jason's popularity extends past a few rounds of applause or casual autographs. During a visit to The Graham Norton Show on Dec. 14, the 39-year-old actor explained that he frequently gets asked to take unique poses with couples who ask for photographs.
"A married couple comes up and they want to take a picture, and then generally it's the woman who wants to get the hug," Jason said. "And they want me to push their husband away or kick them in the face. So I do it."
Can you blame them? Graham showed a few examples of moments when Jason got really into character, and they're pretty freakin' funny. Watch the full video above to see Jason re-create a typical "couples' pose" IRL.

I'm Actually Kind of Dizzy Over The Dark Crystal Prequel's Star-Studded Cast
Way back in the middle of 2017, Netfix surprised us all by announcing a prequel series to The Dark Crystal, Jim Henson's iconic 1982 film. Called The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, the show will be set "many years" before the events of the original film, following three Gelflings who "discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis's power" and "set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world." This week, Netflix truly blew us away by revealing the incredible cast, which features 20 of today's biggest stars. Mark Hamill! Taron Egerton! Andy Samberg! All kinds of names from all corners of Hollywood. Let's review.

Rejoice! This week, Disney confirmed a brand-new Pixar movie called Onward. An official press release from the company says the film takes place in a "suburban fantasy world" and will introduce "two teenage elf brothers who embark on an extraordinary quest to discover if there is still a little magic left out there." If that's not enough to elicit an "aww" from you, then get this: it's partially based on a real pair of brothers! "At Pixar we try to create stories that come from some kind of personal truth," director Dan Scanlon said of the project. "This film was inspired by my own relationship with my brother." OK, if that's not enough to get an "aww," I don't know what else to tell you.
On top of a sweet and unique concept, the project has a pretty stellar cast attached to it. Chris Pratt and Tom Holland have been tapped to play the two leading roles, and they already made it clear they have chemistry, thanks to their funny banter in Avengers: Infinity War! Producer Kori Rae told Disney that Pratt "brings equal parts huge heart and fantastic humor to his character," while Scanlon said Holland "has an infectious charm and sincerity that makes you root for him in every character he plays." Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Octavia Spencer have also signed on to lend their voices to the project, so this party is officially a rager.
Now, for the bad news: Onward isn't slated for release until March 6, 2020. Yes, we're sad, and that's a long way away. But we can rest assured knowing Pixar is going to put the usual amount of care and effort into the project, meaning the result will be pretty special. Don't mind us, we'll start tallying the days!

We Have No Idea What's Going On in the Piercing Trailer, and That's Kind of the Best Part
Things definitely take a turn for the gory in this trailer for the dark thriller Piercing. Reed (played by The Sinner's Christopher Abbott) says goodbye to his wife and child for a business trip that quickly reveals itself to be a ruse to cover up his intention for murder. He hires Jackie (Mia Wasikowska), a call girl who ends up disrupting his plans and turning the film's surrealism up to a very weird 11. The film's trailer is sinister and trippy, like a feverish nightmare you just can't make sense of. We're left wondering, is Reed the one in control, or is Jackie? Watch the trailer above, and look out for Piercing in theaters and on demand Feb. 1!
The Best Books Written by Black Women in 2018 - and Yes, They're All Magical
It's no secret that I love books by black women - whether they're transporting me to mythic, reimagined corners of Nigeria or planting me firmly in the deep South. There's a certain magic that comes with literature by black women, born of resilience and situated within a literary tradition that's committed to telling the stories of men and women navigating their worlds.
This year, we saw incredible bodies of work published by black women - from the former First Lady's record-breaking memoir to an array of books examining what it means to be black and female in spaces designed to undo your existence. We also saw sharp, innovative, masterworks of fiction, books that serve as windows into experiences so raw and poignant they feel like our own. In other words, it was lit - and certainly worth celebrating.
With that in mind, I've rounded up my top 10 books by black women this year, all of which are a must for your to-read list.
10 Animated Movies Coming in 2019 That Aren't Just For Kids
You can always count on animated movies to provide a fun day out for the whole family - because not all cartoons are just for kids. In 2018 alone, there were several animated movies raking in the box office dough, most notably The Incredibles 2 and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, which earned nearly $2 billion combined worldwide. Next year is looking to be no exception, with some high-profile animated sequels coming out (Toy Story 4, anyone?), plus a couple of brand-new animated films that may spawn their own franchises.
The Real Legend of Krampus Is Actually Pretty Terrifying
In the darkest and coldest months of the year, I'm always looking for a thrill and a scare. Sure, there are plenty of scary books to curl up with, and a few more end-of-year horror movies looming, but we're about to give terror a holiday spin. That's right, it's time to talk about the Krampus. It's been a few years since the horror movie of the same name added itself holiday horror movie canon, but the ancient Christmas demon has been around for centuries. We're looking back and digging up the origins of the myths. What aspects were changed for 2015's Krampus, and what parts stick to the classic lore?
Which Female Celebrity Inspired You the Most in 2018?
From athletes to celebrities to royals, there were a ton of phenomenal women who made their mark on 2018. Meghan Markle inspired us to follow our dreams and continued to fight for women's rights as a royal. Likewise, Reese Witherspoon and Tracee Ellis Ross used their platforms to launch the Time's Up initiative, while Jada Pinkett Smith started her Red Table Talk show to start conversations about motherhood, sexuality, and body image. Amal Clooney continued her work of helping refugees all around the world, and Chloe Kim won her very first Olympic gold medal at the age of 17.
But that's not all! Beyoncé made history by hiring the first-ever black photographer to shoot a Vogue cover, and she used her interview to share some empowering quotes about body positivity. On the other hand, Serena Williams continued to fight for women's equality off and on the court, while Pink also did the same through her music and work as as a UNICEF Ambassador. Meanwhile, Lupita Nyong'o became the first black ambassadress for Lancôme and used her role in Black Panther to advocate for gender equality. Tiffany Haddish made history as the first black female to host the MTV Movie and TV Awards, and let's not forget that Ariana Grande's Sweetener album touched on themes about female empowerment, self-reflection, and love.
So now the time has come to vote for the most inspiring female celebrity of 2018! Select your choice by clicking on a photo before the poll closes on Dec. 21.
7 Times Harry, Meghan, William, and Kate Made 2018 Seem Better Than It Actually Was
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may be distancing themselves from Kate Middleton and Prince William at Kensington Palace, but when it comes to royal engagements, it's clear the Fab Four are as tight as ever. In fact, Will and Kate welcomed Meghan into the royal family even before she tied the knot with Harry when they invited her to join them for Christmas service last year. In 2018, we got a closer look at their bond each time they stepped out together, and with everything going on in the world, it was such a breath of fresh air. From Trooping the Colour to Princess Eugenie's wedding to the Remembrance Day service, look back at all the times the Fab Four delighted us with a royal appearance in 2018.
The Christmas Witch From Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Is Based on a Real, Terrifying Myth
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina holiday special is here! "A Midwinter's Tale" takes us right back to the Spellman household, just in time for the year's shortest day and longest night: the Winter Solstice. Unfortunately, the night does not go without incident for the Spellmans; when the mischievous Miss Wardwell extinguishes their protective burning Yule Fire, they find themselves plagued by devilish, invisible children. Unfortunately, there's only one way to get rid of them: Hilda and Zelda must summon the malevolent Christmas witch who is responsible for them, a woman by the name of Grýla.
Here's what's really cool about Grýla: she's actually based on a real legend! Much like the Germanic Christmas demon known as the Krampus, Grýla doesn't spread Christmas cheer, like Santa Claus and his trusty fleet of reindeer. In fact, the legend of Grýla is very dark and twisted. Luckily, that's the perfect kind of legend for a spooky show like this. Let's compare and contrast how Chilling Adventures of Sabrina brings her to life and what it tweaks.
You Don't Need the Power of Three to Grab Any of These 18 Charmed Gifts
Charmed may have been rebooted this year, but that doesn't mean we've forgotten about the original version. The Halliwell sisters charmed their way into our hearts (see what I did there?) with their lovable personalities, relatable everyday struggles, and strong sisterhood. With the holiday season upon us, what better way to bring joy to the heart of a Charmed fan than giving them a little something special under the tree? From fun apparel to stationary repping your Power of Three pride, we have everything you need to celebrate the Charmed Ones.
42 Bob's Burgers Gifts That Are So Good, Gene Would Write a Song About Them
Anyone who's watched Bob's Burgers might feel they're the most delightful family ever to be animated. Bob, Linda, Tina, Gene, and Louise Belcher are some of the oddest folks around, but they love each other so much, and it just works. It's no surprise that the Fox cartoon is so popular among fans; the show is full of catchy lines, adorable family moments, and the zaniest adventures this side of the wharf. So if you know a Bob's Burgers superfan (or are one yourself), treat them right this holiday season and buy them something that will get them singing like Linda after a nice glass of Mommy Juice.
